HARRY KEWELL
HEAD COACH HARRY KEWELL
The Bees drew 1-1 with League One Oxford United in a behind closed doors friendly on Tuesday afternoon. Harry Kewell was pleased with the effort put in from the lads against high-quality opposition. He said: “It was a great workout for the lads. Even though the fitness is there, it is the mental challenge that I keep talking about when playing high quality teams. “Karl Robinson’s team are very difficult to manage against because of the rotation. Despite this, I thought we did a professional job, worked hard in the right areas and also kept our composure.” “We went 1-0 down in the second half, but we stuck to our jobs and when we had the opportunity, we nicked a goal as Oxford were starting to overplay it.” “If we were playing for an extra 10 minutes, we might have won the match.” Tuesday’s hosts will be looking for another strong League One campaign when they kick off their season on Saturday. The gaffer insisted that it is important to play teams from divisions above to test the squad.
HARRY KEWELL
Kewell continued: “If we can play teams like this during pre-season, it gives us the perfect opportunity to challenge ourselves. “We know the difficulties that are going to be thrown our way, however it was the attitude that I was looking for and I certainly got that.” The Bees are approaching the midway stage of the pre-season with a few new faces getting the chance to gain some more game time under their belt. The 42-year-old said: “If we can get our squad fit and ready when the season starts on August 21st, you have done your job and then it is down to picking the right team. “I thought we had a few good opportunities to score and I know the changes added a completely different aspect to the game. “We are looking at teams that are going to hurt us in certain areas and it is about how well we can defend. I thought we did that excellently throughout the match.” Today we turn our attentions to Tottenham Hotspur U23’s at The Hive London for the final home preseason fixture. The boss added: “It is always great playing at home and is fantastic playing in front of fans. “I am really looking forward to the match and hopefully we can display a good performance.”

Joshua OLUWAYEMI GOALKEEPER JOSH OLUWAYEMI HAS RISEN THROUGH OUR ACADEMY RANKS in October, 2020, joined National League side Maidenhead United on loan for his first taste of senior football, where he remained until January, 2021. He made the step up to Development Squad level after serving as first-choice goalkeeper during our Under-18s’ league title charge in 2018/19. He made 17 starts as we eventually finished second in the Under-18 Premier League and built up a reputation for saving penalty kicks - incredibly, he stopped five in all competitions during that campaign, including two in a sensational 3-2 home victory in the north London derby in November, 2018. He also started as our Under-18s beat Southampton in the first ever football match to be played at our new stadium, as we held a Test Event there in March, 2019. In addition, Josh played two games apiece in the Under-18 Premier League Cup and FA Youth Cup during that season, while serving as the substitute goalkeeper for our Under-19s in the UEFA Youth League on three occasions.
Marcel Lavinier DEFENDER MARCEL LAVINIER JOINED OUR DEVELOPMENT SQUAD IN OCTOBER, 2020, FOLLOWING A TRIAL PERIOD. He previously spent 12 years in Chelsea’s Academy from the age of seven and was part of the Blues squad that won the Under-18 Premier League southern division and national title, FA Youth Cup and inaugural Under-18 Premier League Cup in 2017/18, beating us in the final of the latter competition. Born in London, Marcel is a former student at Chelsea Academy school and was capped by England at Under-15, Under-16 and Under-17 levels, before featuring for Portugal Under-18s thanks to his dual nationality. Primarily a right-back, he can also fill in at left-back or in the centre of defence.
Dilan Markanday DILAN MARKANDAY IS A CLEVER ATTACKING MIDFIELDER WHO NORMALLY PLAYS ON THE RIGHT He was a key member of our young side that finished as runners-up in the Under-18 Premier League in 2018/19, playing in more games in that competition - 21 of our 22 - than any other player. He scored 11 goals, including a run of netting in five consecutive games between September and October, 2018, and also had the distinction of scoring in the first ever football match to be played at our new stadium as we dispatched Southampton Under-18s 3-1 in the first Test Event at the venue. In 2019/20, Dilan stepped up to be a regular fixture in our Under-23 side, making 19 appearances and scoring three goals in all competitions while also starting all six of our games in the UEFA Youth League under Ryan Mason’s stewardship. The 2020/21 season saw him continue to be a regular starter for the Under23s, scoring a late winner at home to Southampton in October, 2020, while he also deputised at left-back in a couple of games at the start of 2021.
Max Robson A PRODUCTIVE ATTACKING MIDFIELDER, MAX ROBSON WAS BROUGHT UP IN BURGESS HILL AND ATTENDED BIRCHWOOD HIGH SCHOOL. In 2018/19 he was prolific at Under-16 level, contributing a number of goals and assists.
FARNBOROUGH AWAY POSTCARD For the first time since September I was back on the road for an away day and due to Sutton having their pitch redone, it was a trip a Farnborough. Due to the early midday kick off, my Dad and I drove down to Farnborough on Friday to stay overnight. This gave us a little lie in on Saturday morning and a short drive to the ground. We got in there early so we could watch the warm ups and unfortunately during the warm ups, Jake Askew picked up an injury. This meant that Sutton’s substitute goalkeeper had to step up for us. As the teams came out, we made our way around the ground to the terrace behind the goal for the first half. Sutton started the half well but as we settled into the game we had some chances going forward too. Our confidence in front of goal grew and just before half time we were rewarded with a goal. It was a well worked team goal with Marriott putting the ball into the net. Unfortunately Sutton produced an instant reaction and scored down the other end taking us into half time 1-1. At half time, we moved round to their impressive seated stand behind the other goal for the second half. Both teams had chances at the start of the half with some great defending to keep Sutton out as well as some impressive play going forward. However, it was Sutton who took the lead on 67 minutes scoring a penalty although I’m going to be honest, I completely missed what happened with that one! The game died down a bit in the final 20 minutes and despite some attempts going forward, the game finished 2-1 to Sutton. After travelling all the way to Farnborough, it seemed silly not to make an afternoon of it and stick around to watch Farnborough take on Maidenhead. Between the games we had some time to sit in the bar and it was a nice chance to catch up with other Barnet fans we haven’t seen for a while. The second game was a good watch and finished in a 1-1 draw. After the game, Dad and I started our trip back up to Leeds stopping for tea en route and arriving home around 11pm. Farnborough’s a brilliant club and I had a lovely day out. Despite the loss, we put in a good performance continuing our solid pre-season work.
