Step one - Check woodwork for any splits or imperfections and fill where necessary. Step two – Rub down the surface using medium grade (grade 120) sandpaper then remove all dust. Step three – Apply a coat of undercoat. You can use an acrylic/water based undercoat for interior woodwork but for exterior you must use an oil based product. Apply the paint in the direction of the grain of the wood. Once fully dry repeat this step lightly sanding the first coat and removing dust before you apply the second undercoat.

Important! Gloss is very runny so be careful not to overload your brush with paint, otherwise you will get drips and runs particularly in corners and on edges.

Step four – Lightly sand the second undercoat, remove dust and then apply your finishing coat e.g. Gloss, Satinwood or Eggshell. Apply the paint evenly and lay off in the direction of the grain with one light stroke using the tip of the brush.

10-week basic sewing course at Surrey Street Primary School

This is the first time that Fatima has ever sewn, but she is currently completing her 3rd Kameez . She has learnt a lot on the course including how to sew and draft a neck line, size up a garment and how to draft and cut a pattern. She has learnt to use both a domestic sewing machine and an overlocker. The class has given Fatima a lot of confidence, and with the help of her tutor Khalida Shaheen, she is planning to progress onto an advanced sewing course in the future. Fatima would recommend this course to people wishing to learn a new skill, build confidence, make friendships and improve their language and numeracy skills at the same time. The courses are planned around school times, which was perfect for Fatima. The classes are small with about 10 other students and a tutor to guide you from learning how to use a sewing machine to finishing a garment. Her tutor has nominated Fatima for the Adult Learning Week award for 2014.

A graphic designer who has worked with David Bowie and travelled the world as part of his career has praised the teaching he received while learning his trade at Barnfield College, describing it as “the best course I went on”. Jonathan Barnbrook studied a diploma in Graphic Design at the College, where he credits tutors with encouraging him to aim high. He said: “I have never met such dedicated tutors who wanted us to be good designers. They worked hard and pushed us in every way possible.” Since leaving Barnfield he has worked with legendary musician David Bowie, has had a retrospective at the Design Museum in London and travelled across the world working and teaching. He returned to Barnfield to talk to students as part of the annual VQ Day celebrations. He said: “It was full of energy with lots of different events organised, from concerts to fake crime scenes to investigate!” Jonathan said he would definitely recommend the College to others. “I was giving a very good grounding of the options in different areas of graphics that I could go into when I started working as a professional. The course also provided a good context with a lot of study about the theory and practical side of design. So I would say it is a place where you can really work out what you want to do in the future.” “I have never met such dedicated tutors who wanted us to be good designers. They worked hard and pushed us in every way possible.”

“The University of Bedfordshire partners with Barnfield College on Public Sector Apprenticeships. Over 3 years we have increased the Apprenticeships, which include Business Administration and Information Technology, through the Barnfield College Apprenticeship Scheme and we are aiming to continue building this partnership.”

Steve Hilliard from Steve Hilliard Hairdressing says “As employers we are so lucky to have such a superb College on our doorstep. All the staff are so committed it shows in the day to day work. I have used Barnfield College for 16 years and have had some amazing Apprentices who have graduated into excellent Stylists! Many have won Student of the Year and gone on to be fantastic ambassadors for my company!”

“Our Apprenticeship programme has been developed closely with Barnfield College where the training facilities are excellent. We have a very good relationship with the staff, who are extremely supportive of our requirements and have a sincere appreciation of engineering in industry. From the selection process to regular informative feedback on trainees’ progress, Barnfield College is assisting with the future innovative and high quality engineering requirements of TRUMPF Ltd.”

24

“Our experience with the Barnfield College Apprenticeship Scheme has been very positive. We are impressed with how Barnfield Apprenticeships understand our needs and translate this with Apprentices who are keen, enthusiastic and want to engage and learn in the workplace.”

“Aston Martin has a rolling programme of apprentices, which are selected through a rigorous recruitment process. It is important that they receive the best possible training and education, so that they stay with us after their apprenticeship finishes. The main reason Barnfield College is chosen as our partner is that the students have great success there. Barnfield College is our preferred partner, partly down to the good relationships we have with the assessors and partly due to its excellent track record. Two of our apprentices have won Apprentice of the Year during their time at Barnfield.

Hairdressing Apprentice Employer: Steve Hilliard Hairdressing Alice Norton, an apprentice at Steve Hilliard Hairdressing has won Apprentice of the Year at Barnfield College. Hairdressing runs in Alice’s family, her Nan was a hairdresser and inspired Alice to follow in her footsteps, and Alice has been focussed on a career in hairdressing ever since. Alice divides her time between working at the Steve Hilliard salon on New Bedford Road and studying at Barnfield College. She started working in the salon while still at school, after pestering Steve to let her prove herself, which he did and she has never looked back. By the time she started college, she had progressed so far, she went straight onto the Level 2 course at Barnfield College. Steve is so impressed with Alice that he has offered her a full time position when she completes her apprenticeship.

Apprentice studying for his Level 2 in Painting and Decorating. Employer: Luton Borough Council Carl Caruana works for 4 days a week painting and decorating council properties around Luton, but Thursdays sees him joining his fellow students at Barnfield College’s Technology Campus working toward his NVQ Level 2 Diploma in Painting and Decorating. Carl initially studied Multiskills in the construction department of the College, and after trialling bricklaying, plumbing and other skills, he couldn’t quite settle on what he really wanted to do. It was only when he started studying Painting and Decorating that he found his career path, and he has never looked back. Carl was successfully selected by Luton Borough Council for an Apprenticeship, and has won the praise of all his colleagues there. His previous general construction course means that he works well with the other trades, helping out the carpenters, bricklayers and plumbers on site. Carl’s apprenticeship finishes in September, and he would like to stay working for the Council, and would also like to study for his Level 3. He strongly believes that Apprenticeships are the way forward, combining work experience and studying. Carl is now so highly thought of by his employer, Luton Borough Council, that they have nominated him for Apprentice of the Year.

HNC in Public Services Higher Education Kelly is currently studying for her Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Public Services. Kelly left school at 16, straight after her GCSEs, she worked in a bank for a while, and then in the travel industry; first as a holiday rep overseas, and later training airline cabin crew. Having taken time out to bring up her 3 children, Kelly wanted a new career, and found a course at Barnfield College which helped her do just that. By day Kelly is a full-time Mum, but two evenings a week she studies for an HNC in Public Services. She was worried about how technology has moved on since she last studied, but found that the College staff have been excellent in supporting her in getting up to speed. Kelly has found that her age is no barrier to being accepted by the other students on her course. When Kelly finishes her HNC, she plans to progress to the Higher National Diploma (HND), before starting her new career, either in social work or in the probationary service. Currently she is leaning towards youth probationary work, but her course can open many doors, so she has still got time to make up her mind. Kelly would definitely recommend Barnfield College. So much so, that she is about to send her 16 year old son here in September for a full-time course.

You only start to pay your loan back once you are earning over £21,000 and you will not start to repay your loan until four years after you start your course.

You will pay back 9% of all your earnings over £21,000. For example, if you are earning £21,500 per year, you will pay back 9% of £500 which works out at just £4 per month. If your salary drops back to £21,000 or less, then your repayments will automatically stop.
