Barridoff Galleries The Summer Sale
August 15th, 2020
COOL YOU R H E E L S T H I S SU M M E R ... On August 15th, 2020, Barridoff Galleries will be presenting a sizzling summer sale chock full of fine art by artists from Maine and away, collected from a wide variety of institutions, galleries and collectors in Maine, New England and elsewhere. As we all have been trying to stay safe and secure these past few months, Barridoff Galleries has been staying busy carefully curating a delightful sale to occupy the serious bidder looking to escape the summer heat. The Summer 2020 Fine Art sale will be held outside in a tent, for the first time ever, as well as instituting other safety precautions to accommodate the live audience for a safe and comfortable auction experience. Artists represented in the sale include: Alfred Chadbourn, William Zorach, Dahlov Ipcar, Lynne Drexler, Maurice Freedman, Charles Woodbury, Neil Welliver, Waldo Peirce, Walt Kuhn, Harrison Bird Brown, Frank Henry Shapleigh, Lois Dodd, Katherine Bradford, Georges Braque, Gertrude Fiske, Montague Dawson, Thomas Sully, Tom Crotty, John Laurent, Robert Laurent, and many many more. For this sale we are debuting our brand new Barridoff App, available for download at the Apple App Store or Google Play Store, with which bidders can peruse the catalog, watch the auction live or bid
on their device. We have expanded the ways bidders can participate safely and remotely for those who cannot attend in other ways as well, including providing three third party online platforms from which to bid: Invaluable, Live Auctioneers and now Bidsquare. There are also the old-fashioned ways of remote bidding – by telephone or with an absentee bid – to ensure bidders can get the items they want in the safe manner that they most prefer. Please note, seating is limited for the live audience, with registered bidders as a priority. We ask that you contact Barridoff Galleries for an advance reservation if you wish to attend the auction live. All bidders, whether in person or remotely, should be mindful that the auction starts promptly at 3pm on August 15th. Thank you for joining us this August, it should be a great sale. Preview times will be extended to two weeks to allow bidders more time to peruse the sale in a safe and distanced manner. Also, be on the lookout for our Winter 2021 Auction, which is already starting to shape up to be another great sale next year.
LIVE AUDIENCE LIMITED SEATING

BA RRID OFF G ALLERIES 4. Barridoff Galleries charges the winning bidder a premium to be added to the hammer price on each item purchased. This premium is equal to 22% of the hammer price up to and including $ 500,000.00, plus 17% of the hammer price over $ 500,000.00. The premium when bidding online is an additional 5%. A discount of 2% of the hammer price shall be given to any item paid for and removed from the premises of the auction by the buyer or buyer’s representative on the day of the sale. 5. Upon the fall of the auctioneer’s hammer, title to that item passes to the highest bidder, subject to the terms hereof, who is bound by the sale and assumes full risk and responsibility therefore. The winning bidder authorizes Barridoff Galleries to sign a sales record, which shall be conclusive as to the terms of the sale, on the winning bidder’s behalf. All items must be fully paid for, including any additional amounts owed under paragraph 6 or otherwise, and removed from the premises of the auction by the winning bidder, at the winning bidder’s expense, within 24 hours of the day of sale unless other specific arrangements have been made with Barridoff Galleries. Barridoff Galleries is not responsible for any loss by the winning bidder as a result of the damage or theft of an item subsequent to the fall of the hammer for that item and encourages bidders to pay for and remove purchased items immediately after the sale. Payment for each item purchased must be made before the item is removed. Only cash, certified check or verified credit card will be acceptable unless other suitable arrangements have been made with Barridoff Galleries at least five days before the auction. If items won at auction are not paid for and removed from the premises within 5 business days after the sale, additional charges may apply. Shipping, packing, storage and any related expense of an item are the sole responsibility of the buyer of the item. All sales are final and no refunds will be given with the limited exception of circumstances under paragraph 7. 6. If the winning bidder does not comply with any applicable conditions herein, Barridoff Galleries and the consignor shall have all of the following nonexclusive rights and remedies, in addition to their other remedies at law or in equity: the right a) to hold the winning bidder liable for the total purchase price plus interest of 1 ½ % per month; b) to cancel the sale and retain as liquidated damages all payments made by the winning bidder; c) to resell the item, in which case the winning bidder shall be liable for any deficiency, cost, including handling charges, the expenses of both sales, commissions on both sales and all other charges and incidental damages; d) to charge 1% of the total purchase price per month, with a minimum charge of 5%, to handle any item not timely removed; e) to exclude the winning bidder and its agents or affiliates from all future auctions; f) to charge a reasonable storage fee or g) to set off any amounts Barridoff or consignor owes the winning bidder. The winning bidder is responsible for the winning bidder’s premium due Barridoff Galleries under paragraph 4 separate and apart from any other remedy listed in this paragraph. A winning bidder shall be deemed to have granted to Barridoff Galleries and its consignor as collateral for bidder’s obligations hereunder a security interest in any item of the winning bidder in the possession of Barridoff Galleries or its consignor, who shall have all of the rights of a secured party in Maine and the law of the location of the item. Barridoff Galleries shall have all of the rights of the consignor to pursue all rights and remedies hereunder, and Barridoff Galleries and its consignors shall be entitled to all of their costs, including reasonable attorney’s fees, in enforcing their rights and remedies hereunder. Bidder waives any and all rights it may now or in the future have under any Maine law governing unclaimed or abandoned property. 7. Disputes on the grounds of authenticity subsequent to sale must be made within 15 days of the auction and must be supported by the written testimony of at least two recognized experts in the field with respect to the specific artist involved. Only if the disputed article is in the same condition as when sold will a rescission of the sale be considered. In the event Barridoff Galleries agrees to rescind the sale, which decision shall be at Barridoff Galleries’ sole discretion, an amount up to the purchase price, plus sales tax if appropriate, may be refunded to the winning bidder. Such rescission and refund is exclusive and in lieu of any other remedies which might otherwise be available as a matter of law. In no event shall Barridoff Galleries’ or its consignor’s liability exceed the purchase price of the item sold. 8. Estimates. The high and low estimate given for an item are solely a guideline based upon Barridoff Galleries’ approximation as to the range within which an item may be sold for at auction. An estimate is not a statement of value or selling price of an item and Barridoff Galleries makes
F I N E A RT T E R M S & C ON DI T ION S CONDITIONS OF AUCTION SALE The following Conditions of Sale, including the appended notes and other information, whether printed or online, as they may be amended by any posted notices or oral announcements before or during the auction sale, constitute the entire agreement between Barridoff Galleries, representing its consignors, and the bidder relative to the item being sold and the conduct of the sale. By registering for or participating in the sale, all bidders agree to the terms hereof. 1. The contract for sale for any item purchased at auction is between the consignor and the winning bidder. Barridoff Galleries acts as the consignor’s agent only, unless Barridoff Galleries is selling the item as principal. Barridoff Galleries may reject any bid for any reason. Items are sold with reserve and Barridoff Galleries may reject any bid below the reserve. The auctioneer may bid on behalf of the consignor or of Barridoff Galleries. Barridoff Galleries reserves the right to withdraw any item at any time before its actual sale. The buyer will be the highest bidder acknowledged by the auctioneer. Barridoff Galleries has the authority to decide any disputes over the auction process in its sole discretion, and its decision shall be final and binding. As a convenience to clients who cannot attend a sale in person, absentee/telephone bid forms may be found on the Barridoff Galleries website. Online bidding may also be available on one or more online auctioneering websites as announced by Barridoff Galleries, the conduct of which Barridoff Galleries takes no responsibility. Barridoff Galleries is not responsible for errors and omissions in connection with telephone, Internet or other absentee bidding. Bidder understands that any dispute regarding the auction or a purchased item is between the consignor and the winning bidder unless the dispute concerns the conduct of the sale or other issue within Barridoff Galleries’ sole responsibility and control. 2. Provenances are included in the catalog to the extent they are available. Estimates are included with each lot (See note on estimates in paragraph 8.) Statements of condition may be provided. However, these provenances, estimates and statements of condition and any other information provided by Barridoff Galleries or its staff are merely the opinion of Barridoff Galleries and may not be taken as statements of fact to substitute research regarding and inspection of the item by the bidder, more fully described in paragraph 3. Barridoff Galleries, however, will endeavor to provide the most accurate and complete information on an item and answer to the fullest extent possible any reasonable question, subject to the disclaimers herein. An item may be described as an attribution or “attributed to,” indicating that the authenticity of the item cannot be definitively determined (also see Old Masters in Notes and Other Information, below). The auctioneer may make corrections and provide additional information as available at the time of sale. 3. Barridoff Galleries is not responsible for errors and omissions contained in the catalog, presented by the auctioneer or in any of the information detailed in paragraph 2. Barridoff Galleries makes no representation or warranty with respect to and is not responsible for the description, quality, condition, or authenticity of any items sold, and makes no warranty as to merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose. All items are sold “AS IS.” Prospective bidders bear sole responsibility to inspect an item before bidding to determine the item’s authenticity, condition, size and whether or not is has been repaired or restored. No representation or warranty is made as to copyright of any item or whether the bidder acquires any reproduction rights of the item. Barridoff Galleries offers the opportunity for prospective bidders to examine an item and Barridoff Galleries undertakes no obligation to bidders for Barridoff Galleries to examine, investigate or carry out any tests, either in sufficient depth or at all, to establish the authenticity or accuracy or otherwise of any description or opinion of Barridoff Galleries, whether given orally, in writing, on its website or any published catalog or literature. Bidders should not assume that any such examination, investigation or test has occurred. Barridoff Galleries does not make or agree to make any representation of fact, and undertakes no obligation or duty (whether in contract or in tort) with respect to the accuracy or completeness of any statement or representation made by Barridoff Galleries or on Barridoff Galleries’ behalf that is in any way descriptive of any item or as to the anticipated or likely selling price of any item. No statement or representative by Barridoff Galleries or on Barridoff Galleries’ behalf in any way descriptive of any item or any estimate is incorporated into these terms and conditions or agreement for sale with bidder.
8
no guarantee, representation, or agreement as to the value or selling price of an item more than the Galleries’ opinion of the item’s possible auction price. 9. All purchases are subject to Maine sales tax (5.5%) unless the bidder is located out-of-state and shipping is arranged by Barridoff Galleries or the bidder possesses a sales tax exemption number either from or acceptable to Maine Revenue Services and presents to Barridoff Galleries a valid signed certificate acceptable to Maine Revenue Services stating that Barridoff Galleries does not have to withhold Maine sales tax on the purchase. Maine sales tax is applicable to the full purchase price, which includes the hammer price plus the premium under paragraph 4. 10. The descriptions used in this catalog may not be reproduced in any manner without the written authorization of Barridoff Galleries. 11. The Uniform Commercial Code Title 11, Section 2-328 applies to this auction sale. These conditions of sale are governed by and shall be interpreted under Maine law, and any conflicts hereunder shall be decided in the state and federal courts located in Cumberland County, Maine, and all bidders submit themselves to the jurisdiction thereof. The regulating authority of this auction is the Board of Licensing of Auctioneers, 35 State House Station, Augusta ME 04333-0035. 12. Unless agreed otherwise in writing between Barridoff Galleries and the bidder, these terms and conditions, whenever applicable, apply to all private sales, post auction sales and any other transaction between the parties not conducted at the auction sale that occur while these terms and conditions are posted by Barridoff Galleries.

ONLINE CATALOGS, LIVE PHONE BIDDING, AND ONLINE BIDDING Phone bids will be allowed on a limited first-come, first-served basis. Phone bidders must make arrangements in advance. Barridoff Galleries provides phones as a service for bidders who cannot attend the auction, but phones are not the perfect medium for bidding at an auction under any circumstances and cell phones, while useful, can be particularly difficult. Bidders should be mindful of these limitations if choosing to bid by phone. Bidding may also be available online in real time at barridoff.com, bidsquare.com, invaluable.com, and liveauctioneers.com. Buyers should otherwise make arrangements to collect or ship purchases in a timely manner following the sale.
TITLES Titles are provided for most items in the sale. A title bounded by quotation marks indicates that it is the official title of the item. A title not bounded by quotation marks is an unofficial title or a brief description used to identify the item.
FRAMES If a frame is thought to be original to the work of art or of some other particular interest based upon its history, value or beauty, it may be illustrated; but the illustration is in no way to be considered a guarantee of same and nothing about the frame is included in any catalog entry.
OFFERS FOR PREVIOUS SALES Barridoff Galleries accepts offers for items sold at former auctions at prices at or above the prior hammer price acceptable to participating winning bidders. If Barridoff Galleries receives and determines suitable a bona fide offer for an item, Barridoff Galleries will relay the offer to the winning bidder for consideration and acceptance. If the winning bidder accepts the offer, the applicable standard conditions of sale apply to the transaction.
OLD MASTERS All works by Old Masters, including school, manner and other related information including dates are now by policy offered as attributions because, in the opinion of Barridoff Galleries, there has been too little or no known opportunity for a consensus, extensive research or singular expertise or because such opportunities often result in significant changes and varied opinions. However, all attributions are, in the opinion of Barridoff Galleries, appropriate as cataloged.
MAJOR CREDIT CARDS ACCEPTED Barridoff Galleries accepts as payment major credit cards. Please contact Barridoff staff to determine if your credit card is accepted by Barridoff Galleries.
CONDITION REPORTS
DISCOUNT FOR PAYING FOR/REMOVING PURCHASED ITEMS ON AUCTION DAY
Condition reports may be in the catalog and are available upon request. However, information provided by Barridoff Galleries pertaining to the condition of any auction lot is for the bidder to use or interpret as the bidder sees fit. As more fully described in paragraph 3, a condition report is in no way a guarantee, nor should it be considered an expert opinion. All prints (etchings, lithographs, silkscreens, etc.), to the best of Barridoff Galleries’ knowledge, have full margins unless otherwise noted. All lots should be examined by potential bidders. Because few lots are examined by Barridoff Galleries out of their frames, potential bidders should assume that condition reports only include areas that are clearly visible unless otherwise stated.
Barridoff Galleries is offering a discount on the bidder’s premium under paragraph 4 an amount equal to 2% of the hammer price for items paid for and removed from the auction premises the day of the auction.

orn in 1917 as daughter to the artists Marguerite and William Zorach, Dahlov Ipcar’s entire life was spent living around or creating art. Her early childhood was spent in bohemian surroundings, living with her parents in Greenwich Village, New York City. While she did not receive art instruction formally or from her parents, she received a progressive education attending schools such as City and Country, Walden and Lincoln School of Teachers College, forming the base from which to develop her own artistic style. At age 19, she married her math tutor, Adolph Ipcar. Together they moved into an extra farmhouse located on her parent’s property in Georgetown, Maine in 1936, becoming subsistence farmers and where she was to spend the rest of her life. Dahlov’s first solo exhibition of her works was at New York ’s Museum of Modern Art in 1939 at the age of 21, becoming the first woman and youngest artist to hold a solo exhibition at the museum. Early on, Dahlov’s style was influenced by social realism, depicting farm workers, their draft horses and other farm animals, In 1945, she illustrated her first children’s book, “The Little Fisherman” written by Margaret Wise Brown. Dahlov went on to illustrate over 30 children’s books of her own, and also wrote several fantasy novels and short stories for an older audience. She accomplished all of this while raising her two sons in their Georgetown farmhouse. The style by which she is known today, the bright, abstract and colorful depictions of jungle scenes and animals, began to develop in the 1960s and 1970s, as evinced by her seminal children’s book “Calico Jungle.” Although not part of the art movement of those times, her art developed in similar ways with lively geometric patterns and vibrant, bright colors, blending them with her love of and life spent in nature. Along with her paintings, she also made three dimensional works of art with fabric, soft sculptures of the animals she loved to paint. By the end of her life, although suffering from I M A G E C R E D I T: macular degeneration, she continued D A H L O V I P C A R A R T. C O M to paint, stating that painting is what Image Description kept her alive. She passed away on Dahlov Ipcar at the Easel February 10, 2017, at the age of 99, 65
continuing to paint right up to the very end. Dahlov had dozens of solo, two person and group exhibitions across the country over the course of eight decades, with their greatest concentration held in Maine. She also painted many large-scale public murals displayed in post offices in LaFollette, Tennessee and Yukon, Oklahoma, the Patten Free Library in Bath, Maine, a 21-foot mural entitled “Golden Savannah” in the Shriner’s Hospital for Crippled Children in Springield, Massachusetts and in over a half dozen elementary schools in Maine. She received several honorary degrees and more awards than can be practically listed here. Significantly, in 1972 along with her husband, she received the Maine Governor's Award for "significant contributions to Maine in the broad field of the arts and humanities" and in 2012, the Farnsworth Museum in Rockland, Maine awarded her the Maine In America Award for outstanding contributions to Maine and its role in American Art, joining previous recipients, Alex Katz, Robert Indiana, Andrew Wyeth, Paul Caponigro, John Wilmerding and Will Barnet. Along with many corporate collections and public collections such as housed in Colby, Bates and Bowdoin Colleges here in Maine, her works are part of the permanent collections at such prominent institutions as the Brooklyn Museum of Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City.

I remember that this one was a conscious reaction to the chairs I usually painted, which were plainer, more platonic, and Shaker style. I chose this one because it was so vernacular, and I made up that zazzy wall paper in the spirit of the LA punk scene--not Goth-y punk but closer to Elvis Costello and power pop--but also like something you might have found in the same vintage as the chair (30's?).

P
ost W WII was likely one of the most culturally rich periods for the arts in America. Between “les émigrés,” those artists seeking refuge in the states, and “the Irascibles,” the contrarian group of American painters of the day, Irving Haynes had a rich platform from which to observe, listen and learn. Artists like Ernst, Chagall and Mondrian to Motherwell, De Kooning, Rothko, Sterne and many more helped to form the artistic language of Haynes. As a composer first, “les émigrés” infused Haynes’ work with new meaning. Their modernist musical mélange augmented Haynes’ classical training, bringing him deeper self-exploration. As a graduate of Rhode Island School of Design, he received his BFA and his BS in Architecture. As a jazz pianist and architect, Haynes found a balance between composition and improvisation that would reflect later in the development of his painting. In 1973, Haynes returned to his alma mater, as a beloved teacher. Throughout, the amalgam of art, architecture and sound remained the mixing board of his work and influence.
*"teaching and painting were dual, driving passions that eventually overtook Haynes’ architectural practice, from which he retired in 1994. But the perspective gained from architecture remained a fecund, lifelong point of reference. Indeed, classical and modern music, architecture and painting constituted a powerfully reinforcing ensemble and stimulus for Irving Haynes. A review of the five decades of Haynes’ fine art production – his paintings on paper from 1960-2005 – charts a trajectory that responds to and distills principles of these reinforcing sister arts.” *I R V I N G B. JOINT EXHIBITION Summer 2020 Two-Person Exhibition R e a l i sm and the C yc le o f L ife
The Barridoff Galleries 2020 Summer Art Exhibition presents two accomplished Maine artists, Marlene Ekola Gerberick and C. Michael Lewis, each with their own perspectives of life and its cycles. Both paint realistically but from very different perspectives – Gerberick using objects from nature as her subject matter and Lewis preferring architectural and industrial subjects. Both contemplate death and the passing of things, whether bones of an animal or the deconstruction of long gone structures and landmarks. This exhibition creates an interesting juxtaposition between the two approaches to a universal theme.

MARLENE EKOLA GERBERICK, 1935-2018 FROM THE LIBRARY OF THE SOUL
Marlene Ekola Gerberick’s work begs contemplation. It is both thought provoking and dream-like. Some pieces are serene while others are jarring. Gerberick’s work suggests an array of human experience and offers a glimpse into the artist’s inner world: sometimes tormented, other times joyful and grateful. All the while, she presents us with extraordinary detail, guiding the viewer to a place of reflection. In her own words Gerberick says, “I think that the work of the artist is to be receptive to deep inner material. Allowing the unconscious to become known to the conscious
through the studio process…..that is my job, I think. Dreams play an important role in this process.” Gerberick earned her MFA from City University of NY, with additional studies at the New York Art Student’s League. Her work can be found in numerous publications. She has exhibited, both nationally and internationally, from 1966-2005. And she taught and lectured from 1957-2000. Her life was a testament to art. It appears that Gerberick existed through it and it springs so completely from her.
C. M I CH A E L L EWI S C. Michael Lewis is a freelance illustrator, designer and painter in Portland, Maine. While architectural renderings have been the mainstay of his career, his paintings, for the most part, have been about the history of his native Portland’s built environment: buildings, bridges, factories, and machines, going up, coming down, sometimes thriving, often abandoned, forgotten, or gone. Along with the architectural and industrial subject matter, Lewis incorporates complex geometric patterns and linear perspectives and often vivid colors giving a realistic, and sometimes surrealistic, feel. He has also been IMAGE CREDIT: CMICHAELLEWIS.COM involved with creating art on buildings, including the former “Tommy’s Park” mural, and the former “Peeling Blueprint” mural on 48 Free Street in Portland. Many of the subjects of his paintings no longer exist, such as the old Million Dollar Bridge connecting Portland and South Portland, Portland Stove Foundry, Crosby Laughlin Hoist or Jordan’s Meats, marking his work as a record of Portland’s industrial past. He also is well known for his depictions of future architecture, such as his watercolor renderings of Portland Public Library, Portland City Hall Merrill Auditorium, Maine College of Art, The Portland Company, Gulf of Maine Research Institute, Maine State Pier, St. Lawrence Arts & Community Center and Casco Bay Lines Terminal.
Lewis’ piece in the Summer 2020 auction, “Forty Years”, depicts the Miss Portland Diner in its former spot across the street on Marginal Way, but includes such elements as the billboard from its original location on Forest Avenue near the United States Post Office. The locomotive in the painting is the one that delivered the diner from Worcester, MA in 1947. The milk truck is one that delivered the artist for a pre-dawn breakfast on his way to work as special assistant to his father, the milkman, circa 1960. Several other pieces in this exhibition, including the Grand Trunk Railroad grain elevators, which dominated Portland’s waterfront until the early 1970s, and the Nabisco cookie factory, now the USM Glickman Family Library, are representative of the historical nature of his work. Lewis has held many solo and group exhibitions since the mid-80s, including at esteemed institutions such as the Portland Museum of Art, Portland Public Library, the Farnsworth Art Museum and the Owl’s Head Transportation Museum. He has also exhibited extensively at galleries such as Greenhut Gallery, Frost Gully Gallery and even our own Barridoff Galleries way back in the 1980s when we were still a physical arts and antiques gallery. His career includes commissions for private collectors and public institutions, and his works are also part of many private and corporate collections throughout the state.
