As summer winds down, and kids head back to school, we can’t help but think back on all of the fun and excitement we’ve all had this summer. From making new friends in our summer camps to splashing around in the pool and Splashpad, we loved sharing it all with you this summer! Now with school starting again, we can’t wait to see the kids practicing soccer, football, lacrosse and cross country in our fields after school and on the weekends.
All of us at the Park District are eager for the construction to begin of our new facilities! Beginning mid-August areas of Langendorf Park will be closed due to this construction, but don’t worry, there will be plenty of signage and information posted on our social media pages and website to help you navigate through the construction and parking lots.
Be sure to take the time and experience the chattering autumn leaves turning various shades of reds and golds as you stroll through Citizens Park and The Cuba Marsh this fall.
We can’t thank you, our patrons, enough for all of your continued support. We look forward to seeing everyone at our upcoming fall special events.
Linda Hovde President, Board of Commissioners

You are invited to Reset and Relax with Yoga Instructors Julie and Karen for an evening of gentle stretching and guided meditation. Restorative Yoga is a restful Yoga practice and is all about slowing down and opening your body through passive stretching using blankets, blocks and bolsters. Relaxing the muscles, lowering the heart rate and allowing the nervous system to slow down are all techniques used in Restorative Yoga to help balance fast-paced lifestyles. Finding stillness allows for healing, both physically and mentally, which ultimately supports us in being more focused and effective. After the Restorative portion, the class will transition to Yoga Nidra meditation. An ancient practice, Yoga Nidra is sometimes referred to as “Yogic Sleep”, and is a deep relaxation form of meditation that guides you into conscious awareness of each part of the body for effortless and deep relaxation. Lie comfortably, covered in your favorite cozy blanket from home, while being led through a sequence of cues designed to relax your body and mind. Leave feeling refreshed and enlivened!

Reality-Based Self-Defense for Teens & Adults
AGES: 16 YEARS AND UP
Have you ever worried what you would do if you were the target of criminal violence? Could you protect yourself or the ones you love? If the above questions have ever been a concern, you will find both the skills and understanding with this training!
This program is tailored to busy individuals that do not have time to commit to formal marital arts training. It is a reality-based self-defense system blended with the sciences of anatomy and sports physiology.
All training is done with the following assumptions:
• Your attacker(s) are bigger, stronger or have weapons.
• You are already being attacked (and your options to get away are gone).
It is a simple, safe and devastatingly effective program using intuitive movements that anyone can do regardless of physical ability. It is slow paced with minimal stress. Students will learn to accurately target vulnerable structures and areas of the human body, build mental sight pictures and muscle memory – all with the goal to recall and use when it’s most needed.
No prior martial arts training is required. If this is your first experience with self-defense or it has been some time since your last self-defense training, please register for the 1-Day Workshop in addition to the 6-week class.
Beginner
This class is taught by Sensei Michael Christesen with over 30 years of martial arts instruction that includes Shotokan Karate, Jeet Kune Do, Japanese Jujitsu and Reality Based Self-Defense.

HEAD COACHES ALWAYS NEEDED AND APPRECIATED!
As our programs grow, so does our need for coaches. The more coaches we have, the more teams can be formed and the more each individual child can participate!
Job Description: The coach should be a sincere, caring individual who can share a few hours a week for practices and games. He/she should also have some knowledge of the sport, serve as a positive role model who encourages good sportsmanship, be safety conscious, have patience and enthusiasm, and most of all, make sure everyone is having a great time!
Benefits: Is there any better feeling than knowing that you will be rewarded throughout the season as the kids learn from you as well as spending time with your child and being a positive influence on your whole team? If that isn’t enough, each head coach will receive a team plaque.
Youth League Coaches’ Meeting: All volunteers will be required to attend a coaches’ meeting on 11/18, where we will give you some guidelines and an informational packet that will help you while coaching your Park District team.

Sports Tips from Coach Kent
Signing your child up for a new sport can come with
a handful
of
questions. Coach Kent has listed some helpful tips below that will help get your child started on the right foot.
Tip #1 – Have Fun!
Sports should be all about fun. Our goal is to teach your child the basics, but more importantly, make sure they are having fun! If they don’t have fun playing a sport for the first time, there is a chance that they will never want to play that sport again in the future.
Tip #2 – Try Something New!
Children should be exposed to a variety of sports and they’ll quickly let you know which ones they prefer. Plus, you will find that what you learn in one sport will often translate to another sport. More often than not, stronger athletes are the ones that didn’t specialize in one sport at a young age but played a multitude of sports and learned helpful skills from each.
Tip #3 – If it’s Not for Them, No Need to Worry!
Our classes are reasonably priced and only last a handful of weeks. That way, you can sign up for a single session, and if it’s not for them, you are not committed to an entire season of that sport. Also, our coaches will have extra equipment on-hand so you aren’t spending money on equipment that your child may never touch again.
Tip #4 – Team vs. Individual Sports.
A majority of parents sign their children up for sports not just for the athletic experience, but for the social experience as well. However, not every child will benefit from playing sports on a team. Sign your child up for both team and individual sports to see which environment they like best.
Tip #5 – Have Questions? Contact Me!
I have been the Athletic Supervisor here at the Barrington Park District for over 15 years. If you need help finding the right program for your child or have any other questions about our athletic programs, please feel free to contact me at khengels@barringtonparkdistrict org or (847) 304-5273.
Pickle Spears - Up/Down Split Pickleball League
AGES: 16 YEARS AND UP
DO I HAVE TO BE ANY GOOD? – 2 skill levels of play will be offered: The Gherkin Group for advanced level players and The Bread-N-Butter Bunch for the intermediate level players (players must know how to keep score). A promotion/relegation system may be used at the midway point of the season to move players to the more appropriate level. Levels may be combined due to enrollment.
ROLLIN’ SOLO – Players sign up as individuals, and will be paired with different teammates throughout the night. One of the best parts of Pickleball is the community of players. What better way to meet new Pickleballers, than by playing with new partners and opponents every game?
LET’S PLAY (PICKLE)BALL! – There will be 8 total weeks of regular season play. All players will play, at least, 6 games per night.
RUN UP THE SCORE - Games will last for a total of 12 minutes. There will be no sets, it’s all points. Try and score as many as you can before time runs out! Scores will be recorded for your first 6 games played each night.
THE UP / DOWN - The team with the most points when the time is up will go up a court and split partners. The losing team will go down a court and split partners.
THE SPLIT - When you go up or down and split, the player from each team who finished on the serving side (right side on your respective court) will swap sides.
BUZZER BEATER - When time is called, the point in progress will not count (as play stops immediately). If the score is tied when the buzzer goes off, the team who currently has the serve will be declared the winner.
ADD ‘EM UP - Scores will be tallied up after each night, and accumulate throughout the 8-week season.
CAN’T COMMIT? – If you are unable to commit to the full season, but would be interested in being a sub, please sign up for the Dill Directory. If we are short on players for any night of play, we will reach out to the Dill Directory to find a sub. All subs who are asked to play, will play for free!

The Salem Witch Trials and the Power of Fear
WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 30
The Salem Witch Trials and the Power of Fear is presented by history instructor and continuing education professor Joyce Haworth. Come and hear the spooky history of one of the famous Salem Witch Trials. In 1692, a group of teenage girls began having bizarre and disturbing fits. They claimed that witches in the community were persecuting them and began naming names, accusing first the poor and vulnerable and then the wealthy and respectable. In the following months fear gained the upper hand and legal safeguards went out of the window. In the course of things, twenty people were executed. This lecture lays out the true story of one of the strangest and most painful episodes in American history. Refreshments, coffee and water will be served. Frozen
WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 6
Enjoy a little slice of “Broadway” right in our own backyard. We will be traveling to Paramount Theaters in Aurora, IL to see Frozen. Nominated for a Tony Award for Best Musical, this sparkling Disney fairytale has been reimagined for the stage. The theatrical production of Frozen brings Disney’s beloved animated film to life and fills the stage with winter magic. Set in the magical kingdom of Arendelle, the story follows two royal sisters, Elsa and Anna, as they navigate love, loyalty and Elsa’s uncontrollable powers. In her struggle to understand her identity, Elsa questions her talents, confusing them for character flaws. Like every young woman’s coming-of-age story, she must find strength in her identity and gifts, looking both inward and to those she loves and trusts for support. The stage adaptation maintains the film’s enchanting music, including the iconic and award-winning song “Let It Go.” Frozen is a powerful fable that captures the essence of sisterhood, self-discovery and the enduring power of love, making it a magical and heartwarming experience for audiences of all ages. Park District
The Barrington Park District offers a variety of Challenge Programs designed to meet the needs of a wide diversity of groups. All of our programs are designed to bring together or strengthen your group, and are tailored to meet your specific needs and goals. We believe that participants absorb more when they are physically, socially, intellectually and emotionally involved in the learning process. Our trained facilitators engage groups in activities that allow the participants to take ownership of their learning. Each program allows time for the participants to discuss the experience and relate the learning outcomes back to “real world” situations.
Teams Challenge Course: A variety of problem-based initiatives awaits the team as they are given challenges that might use ropes, cables, platforms, boards or a 12-foot wall. All challenges require teamwork from every member in order to accomplish the goal. Individual strengths are highlighted and the small group size allows for participation by everyone. These challenges take place on or near the ground and require focus, cooperation and trust. Over 20 stations are spread throughout the wooded trails.
Cooperative Games: Learn team-building skills while playing fun, active games. Cooperation, communication, strategy and good sportsmanship are stressed. Great for younger-aged groups!
