The Murray and Murray Collection In many ways the collection of antiques and works of art we are offering for sale is the product of two collectors: Gordon Murray, who opened his first shop selling antiques in 1973, and his friend and mentor Harvey Murray, whose collection Gordon inherited in 2004. Gordon Murray has been fascinated by antiques since he was a boy growing up in Aberdeen in the 1950s and his interest was fuelled by his frequent trips to the many castles and country houses that were open to the public in Deeside at the time. Every Saturday he would head off to the antique shops in the town, including Young’s in Belmont Street and Alec ‘Cocky’ Hunter’s in Castlegait where he would buy the best that his meagre pocket money would afford. As soon as he was able he opened his first shop in Granton Place in Aberdeen where his first customer was the man who was to become his friend and mentor, Harvey Murray. When Gordon was invited to view Harvey’s collection at his home in Cults, just outside Aberdeen, he knew he had met a kindred spirit and he also realised what he wanted to collect himself. Harvey Murray was the wealthy heir to an Aberdeen potato and grain merchants, Gavin & Gill. His older brother Peter, along with his wife Linda, became renowned Renaissance art scholars, however Harvey’s fate was to inherit and run the family business. He took every opportunity, however, to indulge in his real interest which was the collecting and appreciation of antiques. He built up a sizeable collection of fine 18th and early 19th century furniture, porcelain and glass and an enviable collection of silver which was sold by Lyon & Turnbull in 2003. When Harvey died in 2004 Gordon inherited his apartment in the West End of Aberdeen, where he had moved in 2001, along with its contents. “It was a wonderful inheritance”, remarks Gordon, “and although I will be keeping many of the works of art that Harvey cherished, my wife and I are moving away from Aberdeen and we just can’t take it all with us. In my working life as a dealer I had to keep more of a commercial eye on what I bought whereas Harvey really only bought what he loved and the price wasn’t so important. What our friendship instilled in me was a real appreciation of the quality and design of works of art, whatever the monetary value. As a result I can only really sell what I like myself! The group of antiques for sale are an amalgam of our collecting lives, however, I don’t feel sentimental about selling them – I have enjoyed having them in my home and I always know that something else will turn up. I can’t say I will stop dealing and collecting – only that I am keeping my options open!”

Imagine you were left a fortune and overnight became a multi-millionaire. What would you do? Quit your job and live a life of self-indulgence? Most of us would be sorely tempted, but William Gill of the Royal Engineers did neither. He stayed in the army and used the fortune he inherited to finance the journeys of exploration that he loved, at the same time gathering intelligence for the British government. Consequently he died prematurely, murdered in the Sinai desert at the age of 39, whilst on his way to cut the telegraph lines between Constantinople and Alexandria. But by that time his missions had taken him to Persia, China, Tibet, India, the Balkans, Turkey and North Africa, and he had been awarded the gold medal of the Royal Geographical Society.
Spellings of place names where quoted by William Gill have been left in their original Victorian form but elsewhere have been modernised. Where there is a risk of confusion, an alternative spelling has been given in parenthesis.
All through his travels, in addition to his meticulous scientific observations and geographical surveys, William Gill kept travel diaries, which he posted home to his mother in instalments. These are fascinating accounts covering not only the exotic places he explored and the interesting people he met, but also the minutiae of public transport, hotels and catering, architecture, military uniform and even the behaviour of his fellow Brits. Much of the present book is taken from these travel diaries, which are kept in the archives of the Royal Geographical Society to whom they were bequeathed in 1932 by a Mrs Rea. In most cases, I have transcribed directly from William Gill’s handwritten copies. Occasionally, I have used transcriptions that appeared in either the Royal Engineers Journal in the early 1880s or in Gill’s book, The River of Golden Sand.
I became interested in William Gill because he was my great-great-uncle. Our family knew that he wrote a book about China, that he died a heroic death at the hands of the Bedouin, was buried in St Paul’s cathedral and commemorated in Rochester cathedral. But we did not know much more than that. Following my research for this book, we know a lot more. So join me, if you will, for some glimpses of this extraordinary Victorian hero: glimpses of him through your eyes, and glimpses of his fascinating world through his own.
The city views are from Round the World, published in 1895 by George Newnes Limited, London. They show the places much as William Gill would have seen them, having been taken not long after his death and before the impact of the internal combustion engine. These images have been digitally enhanced for greater clarity. Most other illustrations are from the condensed version of William Gill’s own book, The River of Golden Sand, published by John Murray in 1883.

The Anthony Welling Collection Anthony Welling was widely known in the 'trade' when he was employed by the largest shipper of antiques in the '60s. However, Nicole, Dutchess of Bedford, approached him to assist in opening what was one of the first antique centres in the UK at Woburn Abbey (now known as Stately Antiques) and he became its first Administrator. In 1971 Anthony bought and converted an 18th century barn in Ripley, Surrey, and opened his own business, Anthony Welling Antiques, specialising in period oak and country furniture.
