Provenance: The collection of Samuel Johnston Melvin, Paisley and thence by descent to the present owner. Note: This plate is from one of the most elaborately decorated services produced at Worcester, designed for William Henry, Duke of Gloucester (1743-1805). All known pieces are marked with a large gilt crescent, a mark found only on a few richly decorated services produced in the 1770s. The service passed to the Dukes of Cambridge and, in 1904, Christie’s sold over seventy pieces for the family along with a similarly decorated Chelsea service dating to circa 1762.

46 EZ393/2 CASED MUSICAL GAME BY ANN YOUNG, EARLY 19TH CENTURY in a mahogany cross and chevron banded case, opening to reveal the two parts of the playing board overlaid with paper printed with staves, keyboards, key signatures etc., pierced with numerous holes, the base with central lidded partition containing space for dice shakers, the sides with two small drawers containing ebony and ivory pegs and dice 45cm wide, 11cm high, 45cm deep Note: Ann Young, of St James Square, Edinburgh, was awarded the patent for this games box in 1801. It was the first British patent awarded to an educational game designed for ‘amusement and instruction.’ It contained six games which were designed, not only to be ‘amusing and interesting’ but also to teach ‘the fundamental principles of the science of music’. There is a similar example in the National Museum of Ireland. 62 EZ621/1 GILT ORMOLU INKWELL BY PAUL SORMANI, PARIS, 19TH CENTURY modelled as a rocky river with a cresting of a putto riding the back of a sea-serpent in bronze, the pen trays as stepped rocks with a conch shell as the lid of the inkwell with a small turtle to the front of the stand 35cm wide, 21cm high Note: The firm established in Paris in 1847 by Paul Sormani exhibited consistently at International shows during the second half of the 19th century. In 1867 the firm relocated to 10 rue Charlot. Italian by birth, Paul Sormani was a maker of fine ‘meubles de luxe’, whose work was described in the 1867 Exposition Universelle catalogue as ‘toute sa production revele une qualite d’execution de tout premier ordre’. The firm also made eclectic furniture in contemporary styles. It can be difficult to date Sormani’s work, as the firm produced furniture for nearly ninety years. However, when Paul Sormani died, circa 1877, his wife and son took over the business and from this date onwards pieces are normally signed ‘Veuve Sormani & Fils’.

BROCKWOOD PARK SCHOOL: JIDDU KRISHNAMURTI AND MARY TAYLOR ZIMBALIST

The Brockwood Park collection marked the coming together of two remarkable people, Jiddu Krishnamurti and Mary Taylor Zimbalist, with a creative community of people who, inspired by Krishnamurti's teachings, established a school where students from all over the world could live and learn in an expansive and free from fear environment. When this school at Brockwood was set up in 1969 Mary, a former debutante, successful model and Hollywood actress, was working and travelling with Krishnamurti as his close friend and personal assistant. She was then in her fifties and he in his seventies. Brockwood Park became their European home and base, and its exquisite furnishings were, at Krishnamurti's request, selected by Mary whose tastes were not only impeccable but aesthetically inspiring. It was a joy to visit and feel part of their home at Brockwood, where perfectly chosen furniture, pictures and porcelain enhanced the beauty of the fine eighteenth-century manor house.

When Krishnamurti and Mary met in California in the early 1960s, each had known and relinquished vivid and colourful earlier life-styles, and become deeply involved in spiritual enquiry. Kirshnamurti was then renowned as one of the foremost religious teachers and educators of the twentieth century. Born in India in 1895 he had, in 1909, been “discovered” by the international and influential Theosophical Society, which saw him as a reincarnation of the Lord Maitreya, and proclaimed him “the World Teacher”. He was taken under the wing of Dr Annie Besant, the great force of the Society. Educated in England he subsequently travelled the world, talking to very large audiences and meeting an astounding variety of people. Distinguished artists, writers, musicians, scientists, actors and educators acclaimed him, attracted not only to his teachings but to his personal beauty and charm. George Bernard Shaw, for example, famously wrote that Krishnamurti was the most beautiful being he had ever seen!

However, in 1929, Krishnamurti walked away from the Theosophical teachings and life-style, stating the “truth is a pathless land”, and that his concern was to set men and women free from the religious, political, nationalistic and other forms of conditioning which limited them. He continued to travel and talk to large audiences, but no longer as a guru - rather as a friend. Mary had been born into an affluent and privileged American family who were prominent in New York and European society. She resolutely made her own way, first as a photographic model and later acting in Hollywood. Her delicate beauty and strong but gently expressed personality attracted many admirers. After a long association with the screenwriter, Ben Hecht, she eventually married the MGM producer Sam Zimbalist in the early 1950s and they made their home in Malibu. Sam died suddenly of a heart attack, and in 1960 Mary

attended the Oscars ceremony to accept, on his behalf, the “Best Picture” award for his Ben Hur. Always a free spirit, she embraced many liberal causes and, elegant as ever in Haute Couture clothes, participated in marches with Martin Luther King and other significant figures for social reform. Brockwood Park, now and when Krishnamurti and Mary lived and worked there, is a byword for excellence and beauty. In the borderlands of Scotland, not far from Gretna, lies the elegant mansion of Springkell. Built for the Maxwell family, proprietors of the Barony of Kirconnel and Springkell since 1609, the original Georgian centre of the house was erected in 1734 and later extended with the addition of the wings in 1818. Francis Groome described it in his Ordnance Gazetteer of Scotland (1882-85) as: â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;a fine Grecian edifice ... with beautiful groundsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;. In 1894, Sir John Heron-Maxwell, 6th Bt., sold the property to Sir Jabez Edward JohnsonFerguson (1849-1929). Born in Salford, Manchester, Sir Jabez was chairman of Jabez Johnson, Hodgkinson & Pearson Ltd. and a director of the mining company Bolckow, Vaughan & Co. Ltd. In 1885 he became the Liberal MP for Loughborough and he was created a Baronet in 1906. The house passed down the generations with its contents fairly intact and still remains in the Johnson-Ferguson family today. Following on from our successful sale of selected contents in the March Fine Antiques sale, we are delighted to be offering more items from the house, including a collection of 16th and 17th century Flemish tapestries which adorned the walls of the dining room.

Note: Jean Gordon Welsh (1930-2009) was one of the foremost Scottish architects of her day. After studying at Glasgow School of Art, she was elected ARIBA in 1955 and joined William Nimmo in practice in 1956. William Nimmo & Partners was originally based in Wishaw and moved to Glasgow in 1969. Her output was prodigious and some of her notable projects include: the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow (with Leslie Martin); the Faslane Naval Base; and the restructuring and refurbishment of Britannic House in London for BP’s global headquarters, all in the 1980s. Jean was awarded the status of Freeman of the City of London and retired from practice in the 1990s.

Note: Sir George Harrison (1811-1885) was an Edinburgh merchant and Lord Provost from 1882-1885. He was responsible for the acquisition of Blackford Hill by the Corporation of Edinburgh. In 1885 he was elected MP for Edinburgh South but died a month later. By family repute, this dining table was part of the furniture with which Sir George furnished the city chambers with during his time in office and was used in one of the principal rooms.

FURNITURE AND WORKS OF ART FROM KINNAIRD ESTATE

There has been a house at the estate of Kinnaird near Dunkeld in Perthshire from the early 1600s. The original part of the current main house was built in the late 18th century, and the property changed hands several times during the following period. It eventually sold to John, 4th Duke of Atholl in 1826. In 1840 the house was occupied by as a dower house by Lady Glenlyon, daughter of the 2nd Duke of Northumberland, after the death of her husband, Sir James Murray, 1st Lord Glenlyon, the second son of the 4th Duke of Atholl. The central part of the house was constructed during that period. At the beginning of the 20th century the Atholl Estates were being reduced for the first time in centuries, and in 1927 the 8th Duke of Atholl sold the Kinnaird estate to Major the Hon. Sir John and Lady Ward, who further enlarged the main house. Sir John was the second son of William Ward, Viscount Ednam and 1st Earl of Dudley. His wife, Jean, was the daughter of Whitelaw Reid, the American Ambassador to the Court of St James's from 1905-1912. Their house parties at Kinnaird were renowned for the hospitality and sport, and among their guests were members of the Royal family. In 1960 the estate was inherited by the Wards' second son, Reginald Ward. He married Constance Cluett, from New York, in 1975 and together they continued to run Kinnaird as a sporting and residential estate with guests from here and abroad. Following the death of Mr Ward in 1987 Mrs Ward chose to open Kinnaird as a Country House Hotel in order to preserve the house, its style and atmosphere. It duly opened in 1990 and became known worldwide as a fine hotel and a member of the Relais et Chateau consortium. After 20 years, however, it was decided to manage the Kinnaird estate in another way and the hotel was closed. The current lots formed part of the original furnishings in Kinnaird house and were all inherited from Sir John and Lady Ward.

He completed his apprenticeship in 1736 and went into partnership with William Vile in 1751. Upon Vile’s retirement in 1764 Cobb took over the firm. At this time Cobb took a managerial role and was primarily concerned with design and quality control. A change in direction was required to meet competition from other London firms such as Thomas Chippendale and John Linnell The neo-classical taste gradually took hold from the mid 1760s, first in an increasingly refined vocabulary of marquetry decoration applied to the bombé and serpentine forms of the ‘French manner’ of the 1750s introduced to London by Pierre Langlois and popularised by Chippendale’s Director.

CONDITIONS OF SALE

5. VALUE ADDED TAX

Lyon & Turnbull carries on business with bidders, buyers and all those present in the auction room prior to, or in connection, with a sale on the following General Conditions and on such other terms, conditions and notices as may be referred to herein.

Value Added Tax on the hammer price is imposed by law on all items affixed with an asterisk or double asterisk. Value Added Tax is charged at the appropriate rate prevailing by law at the date of sale and is payable by buyers of relevant lots.

1. DEFINITIONS

(1) Immediately a lot is sold you will:

In these Conditions: (a) "Auctioneer" means the firm of Lyon & Turnbull or its authorised auctioneer, as appropriate; (b) "deliberate forgery” means an imitation made with the intention of deceiving as to authorship, origin, date, age, period, culture or source but which is unequivocally described in the catalogue as being the work of a particular creator and which, at the date of the sale, had a value materially less than it would have had if it had been in accordance with the description; (c) "hammer price" means the level of bidding reached (at or above any reserve) when the auctioneer brings down the hammer; (d) "terms of consignment" means the stipulated terms and rates of commission on which Lyon & Turnbull accepts instructions from sellers or their agents; (e) "total amount due" means the hammer price in respect of the lot sold together with any premium, Value Added Tax chargeable and any additional charges payable by a defaulting buyer under these Conditions; (f) "sale proceeds" means the net amount due to the seller, being the hammer price of the lot sold less commission at the stated rate, Value Added Tax chargeable and any other amounts due to us by the seller in whatever capacity and however arising; (g) "You", "Your", etc. refer to the buyer as identified in Condition 2. (h) The singular includes the plural and vice versa as appropriate. 2. BIDDING PROCEDURES AND THE BUYER (a) Bidders are required to register their particulars before bidding and to satisfy any security arrangements before entering the auction room to view or bid; (b) the maker of the highest bid accepted by the auctioneer conducting the sale shall be the buyer at the hammer price and any dispute about a bid shall be settled at the auctioneer's absolute discretion. (c) Bidders shall be deemed to act as principals. (d) Once made, no bid may be withdrawn. (e) Our right to bid on behalf of the seller is expressly reserved up to the amount of any reserve and the right to refuse any bid is also reserved. 3. INCREMENTS Bidding increments shall be at the auctioneer’s sole discretion. 4. THE PURCHASE PRICE The buyer shall pay the hammer price together with a premium thereon. Antiques, Jewellery & Silver and Pictures (Not Fine Sales) 17.5%. All other sales (Fine/Special/Collections) 25% up to £25,000 / 20% thereafter. VAT will be charged on the premium at the rate imposed by law.

6. PAYMENT (a) pay to us the total amount due in cash or in such other way as is agreed by us. We accept cash, bank transfer (details on request), Switch or Debit Cards and Visa or MasterCard (please note there is a surcharge of 1.5% (VAT included) when using credit cards). We do not accept American Express. (2) Any payments by you to us may be applied by us towards any sums owing from you to us on any account whatever without regard to any directions of you or your agent, whether express or implied.

THIRD PARTY LIABILITY All members of the public on our premises are there at their own risk and must note the lay-out of the accommodation and security arrangements. Accordingly neither the auctioneer nor our employees or agents shall incur liability for death or personal injury (except as required by law by reason of our negligence) or similarly for the safety of the property of persons visiting prior to or at a sale. 10. COMMISSION BIDS

(2) You shall at your own risk and expense take away any lots that you have purchased and paid for not later than 3 working days following the day of the auction or upon the clearance of any cheque used for payment after which you shall be responsible for any removal, storage and other associated charges.

While prospective buyers are strongly advised to attend the auction and are always responsible for any decision to bid for a particular lot and shall be assumed to have carefully inspected and satisfied themselves as to its condition we shall if so instructed clearly and in writing execute bids on their behalf. Neither the auctioneer or our employees or agents shall be responsible for any failure to do so save where such failure is unreasonable. Where two or more commission bids at the same level are recorded we reserve the right in our absolute discretion to prefer the first bid so made.

(3) No purchase can be claimed or removed until it has been paid for.

11. WARRANTY OF TITLE AND AVAILABILITY

(4) It is the buyer’s responsibility to ascertain collection procedures, particularly if the sale is not being held at our main saleroom.

The seller warrants to the auctioneer and to you that the seller is the true owner of the property consigned or is properly authorised by the true owner to consign it for sale and is able to transfer good and marketable title to the property free from any third party claims.

7. TITLE AND COLLECTION OF PURCHASES (1) The ownership of any lots purchased shall not pass to you until you have made payment in full to us of the total amount due.

8. REMEDIES FOR NON-PAYMENT OR FAILURE TO COLLECT PURCHASES (1) If any lot is not paid for in full and taken away in accordance with these Conditions or if there is any other breach of these Conditions, we, as agent for the seller and on their behalf, shall at our absolute discretion and without prejudice to any other rights we may have, be entitled to exercise one or more of the following rights and remedies: (a) to proceed against you for damages for breach of contract; (b) to rescind the sale of that lot and/or any other lots sold by us to you; (c) to resell the lot (by auction or private treaty) in which case you shall be responsible for any resulting deficiency in the total amount due (after crediting any part payment and adding any resale costs). Any surplus so arising shall belong to the seller; (d) to remove, store and insure the lot at your expense and, in the case of storage, either at our premises or elsewhere; (e) to charge interest at a rate not exceeding 1.5% per month on the total amount due to the extent it remains unpaid for more than 3 working days after the sale; (f) to retain that or any other lot sold to you until you pay the total amount due; (g) to reject or ignore bids from you or your agent at future auctions or to impose conditions before any such bids shall be accepted; (h) to apply any proceeds of sale of other lots due or in future becoming due to you towards the settlement of the total amount due and to exercise a lien (that is a right to

12. AGENCY The auctioneer normally acts as agent only and disclaims any responsibility for default by sellers or buyers. 13. TERMS OF SALE The seller acknowledges that lots are sold subject to the stipulations of these Conditions in their entirety and on the Terms of Consignment as notified to the consignor at the time of the entry of the lot. 14. STANDARD VENDOR FEES AND CHARGES (Subject to VAT) (1) Commission: 15% of the first £3000 and 10% thereafter is charged on the selling price of each lot (subject to a minimum charge of £30). Loss and damage warranty: 1.5% on value of lots sold. Photography: max £40 mono per lot, max £250 colour. Internet Service: £10 per lot. (2) If a vendor wishes to withdraw a catalogued lot, a withdrawal fee will apply at the auctioneer’s discretion; this will be charged at 10% mid estimate. 15. DESCRIPTIONS AND CONDITION (1) While we seek to describe lots accurately, it may be impractical for us to carry out exhaustive due diligence on each lot. Prospective buyers are given ample opportunities to view and inspect before any sale and they (and any independent experts on their behalf) must satisfy themselves as to the accuracy of any description applied to a lot. Prospective buyers also bid on the understanding that, inevitably, representations or statements

by us as to authorship, genuineness, origin, date, age, provenance, condition or estimated selling price involve matters of opinion. We undertake that any such opinion shall be honestly and reasonably held and accept liability for opinions given negligently or fraudulently. Subject to the foregoing neither we the auctioneer or our employees or agents or the seller accept liability for the correctness of such opinions and all conditions and warranties, whether relating to description, condition or quality of lots, express, implied or statutory, are hereby excluded. This Condition is subject to the next following Condition concerning deliberate forgeries and applies save as provided for in paragraph 6 “information to buyers”. (2) Private treaty sales made under these Conditions are deemed to be sales by auction for purposes of consumer legislation. 16. FORGERIES Notwithstanding the preceding Condition, any Lot which proves to be a deliberate forgery (as defined) may be returned to us by you within 21 days of the auction provided it is in the same condition as when bought, and is accompanied by particulars identifying it from the relevant catalogue description and a written statement of defects. If we are satisfied from the evidence presented that the lot is a deliberate forgery we shall refund the money paid by you for the lot including any buyer's premium provided that (1) if the catalogue description reflected the accepted view of scholars and experts as at the date of sale or (2) you personally are not able to transfer a good and marketable title to us, you shall have no rights under this condition. The right of return provided by this Condition is additional to any right or remedy provided by law or by these Conditions of Sale. GENERAL 17. We shall have the right at our discretion, to refuse admission to our premises or attendance at our auctions by any person. 18 (1) Any right to compensation for losses liabilities and expenses incurred in respect of and as a result of any breach of these Conditions and any exclusions provided by them shall be available to the seller and/or the auctioneer as appropriate. (2). Such rights and exclusions shall extend to and be deemed to be for the benefit of employees and agents of the seller and/or the auctioneer who may themselves enforce them. 19. Any notice to any buyer, seller, bidder or viewer may be given by first class mail in which case it shall be deemed to have been received by the addressee 48 hours after posting. 20. Special terms may be used in catalogue descriptions of particular classes of items in which case the descriptions must be interpreted in accordance with any glossary appearing at the commencement of the catalogue. 21. Any indulgence extended to bidders buyers or sellers by us notwithstanding the strict terms of these Conditions or of the Terms of Consignment shall affect the position at the relevant time only and in respect of that particular concession only; in all other respects these Conditions shall be construed as having full force and effect. 22. Scottish law applies to the interpretation of these Conditions.
