DESIGNERS / SPRING 2016 PREVIEW HAUSACH LOOKBOOK // PHOTOS BY ARMIN MORBACH

HAUSACH Sascha Gaugel, stylist of the stars and designer of the couture label HAUSACH, got his inspiration for his Spring/Summer 2016 collection from Italian flair, the summer colors of the Amalfi coast and its architecture. "The stringently

Highlights include neoprene construction, flower applications and heavy embroidery, with all pieces showing detail to artisanship. The delicate collection shows rich contrast with 34

BASIC INSTINCT WORDS BY ANNA PASHUTA

Instinct by Anna Pashuta

Basic Instinct. Did this phrase bring to mind the famous blockbuster movie? Or do you start looking from under your supraorbital

ridge after some imaginary prey? What is it that you thought about? Wild love games? Well, it is quite skillful that we bring out our atrophied basic instinct only on demand. This is not something we live by every day. Is there a space for your wilderness when you wake up every morning, go to work and plan on having children after the life gets more stable? Is your basic instinct something that is separable from you - and is it only fit for the bedroom?

BASIC INSTINCT WORDS BY ANNA PASHUTA

e buried our traditional basic instinct because there is an abundance of food available, we no longer depend on social ties and we put our short-term responsibilities before our long-term goals, but the instinct has evolved, triggered by a change in the life threat itself. So we need to resurface our instinct again to live a full quality life. There are some preinstalled safety features that are there to help us survive. In fact, if you were to exist without any interest in self-preservation, you could probably get by. It took an average of just nine months to divide you from one merged cell into one hundred thousand billion cells, which is about as many beads on the dresses of an army of 10 million brides wearing Gail Be’s wedding gowns. All this life is not intended to go to ashes just because you are a self-destructive species. However, even such a complex secure system needs some help to keep it all together. Thus, the basic instinct is not quite enough. It also needs you to cooperate.

B

x

asic does not mean primitive here. It means essential. There is no danger to our survival in terms of wild animals and harsh weather conditions, thus, we buried our basic instincts like broccoli under cheese. We have covered up at least so called “traditional instinct” because we simply do not need the type of protection. As a whole, we do not take care of ourselves enough. Is eating a means of going through the day as efficiently as possible, or do we eat when we want something sweet, or simply to get rid of the annoying feeling of hunger itself? Yes, there is an instinct that is telling us to eat, then eat again and do it at least 66

basic-magazine.com

three times a day. During the stone age everything was most likely organic and was healthy for us (technically everything is better than the alternative of not eating and the state of death), thus, anything to grab on the way towards initiating animal domestication or painting in the caves would do well as food. Now, throw the granola bar in, ha! You made it! Survival through the day. We did not get to learn that fast food is bad, because we can still survive on that. But what is that vexing feeling of guilt? Oh, that’s the one – the basic instinct. You do know what the right choice is and when you choose otherwise – the only thing (your basic instinct that is) that actually cares for your wellbeing is sending you an error message. But still, you survive, so you do not learn. The message goes to spam and that particular instinct is on mute. Regular food ration of a modern person includes a rare breakfast, sandwich for lunch and some overcooked pasta for dinner. At the age when we have fruits, vegetables and grains available 24 hours a day, we choose a sandwich. I bet we were more creative with our food when we did not have to pay for it and had to scavenge it fresh from the woods. Unfortunately, we do not see food as a building block of our body. Hunger

is an expression of our instinct wired through our nervous system, the brain running low on glucose and will not be able to take care of the processes that your conscious mind normally would not have to worry remembering, like breathing and your heart beating. We learned to shut the alarm off with the sandwich and the brain is ok with that, however, there are other parts of the body, like kidneys and the heart, for which high salt and high fat supply would not do long-term. This is something your instinct would tell you in the form of feeling bored from your lunch sandwich. But hey, there is no time for that. We have to go to work and earn more money to buy another sandwich for tomorrow. Food is more than just biological oxidation inside you. Someone, a long time ago, brought it up a notch and turned it into a procedure that brings joy. They called some friends and family and had a good time. When you eat food with other members of your community you build something. The social circle. Imagine animals who share food. Animals who live in communities collect food together and don’t share it with the other herds. Members of the clan who eat from the same carcass or pile of fruits will have the social support that will help everyone to survive. German scientist Roman M. Wittig, who has benefits of group living with primates among other special interests, concludes in his article for Proceedings of the Royal Society B that chimpanzees who share meals together tend to have higher levels of oxytocin hormone in their urine compared to chimps that do not share meals. Oxytocin is nicknamed as a “love hormone” - one responsible for

x

bonding between partners as well as a mother and a child. Eating together can enhance bonding among participants. The difference between chimpanzees’ genes versus human is only 4% as investigated by Ajit Varki, a physicianscientist from Glycobiology Research and Training Center, Departments of Medicine and Cellular & Molecular Medicine, thus, there is a good chance that the same principle works for us. So eating with your family and friends is important in making you a tighter clan, which will allow you to have a shoulder to cry on and a buddy to celebrate your success with.

O

x

ur social circle is usually something that builds by chance. We do not get to choose our family, oftentimes our friends passively get around and stick with us and, judging from the fact that about half of all first marriages end up in divorce, according to the National Health Statistics Report, we do not put that much planning into choosing our partner. This is ironic since social support is essential to our survival, yet we do not have any time allocated into our daily agenda for reconsidering our entourage. Social media and life online makes us very considerate of our life in the way it appears. Do I look good with my partner on the picture? Do we look happy with our friends? Does our party seem fun to others? Your social circle will most likely determine what kind of advice you will get on

your break up or your next move after graduation. The instinct is telling you, yes, I should be happy with my friends and yes, my partner needs to look good because the good-looking usually means healthy and can produce a viable offspring even if you do not select them for the reproduction. However, you need more than looks. Surprisingly, we did not develop yet to the point where we only need a picture for comfort. It is much more rewarding to have a real connection with a person that is intellectually and emotionally compatible with you. Our basic instinct is buried under the cushiony hassle of our busy lives. We don’t attend to the instinct because there is no direct daily danger to our lives. However, we still need to survive. Now it is about the long-term survival - not a day-to-day one. Thus, we need to recognize that our basic instinct is willing to evolve and adapt to the new lifestyle that we live today in 2016. The “danger factor” has evolved, as did our instinct. Instead of males fighting for female attention by making adenoidal sounds and doing a little jittery dance, we all agree that we can avoid the hassle by simply putting a ring on a particular finger. The ring indicates that, dance or not, the female is taken. And just because we would not utilize our traditional instinct to try and win our mate, does not mean there is no instinct involved in fighting for your loved one. Instinct is still there, it was just put into a vessel of a different shape. If we do not use the instinct that often, how do we know that it is still there? You know it when there is an unexplained compulsion to do the right thing for yourself. In a lot of cases, doing good even for others is still mainly to please ourselves. Being pleased with what we do strengthens our confidence,

enhances self-esteem and just makes us feel better psychologically. There are triggers around us that will call out this state of universal goodness. You might have previously experienced inspiration, motivation and the energy to learn new things, interacted with strangers and worked on yourself after watching an inspiring film. There is something appealing about living the life to the fullest and it is because you like yourself, other people like you, and it is simply fun. There might be your basic instinct telling you that this is what you want to do to be healthier, have a healthier offspring and live longer. There is also plethora of other viral morals like a video of a police officer buying new shoes for a homeless guy. Add to this videos or blogs about working out and 10 things that “real couples” do. There is just something about those colorful workout pants and sneakers that just does it for people and makes the workout worth pursuing! And of course the now popular lists of things that make things clearer to figure out – 7 things that women do not tell you about sex or 9 signs that you found the one and so on… But the common factor in all this is the appeal to our inner gut feeling that knows what you need to persist. And even for a few moments while you scroll, you can feel in control and have a brief sense of security in the future because you know what you should be doing to feel better. Whoever makes these videos or writes these posts know what they are doing. The way I imagine this is that someone figures out a life lesson and decides to share it with the world. “If other people know what I know, they 67

The killer today is not something that is easy to point a finger at and eliminate with a stone drop on the head. Our killer is our lifestyle.

x

will act differently is the reasoning behind this internet marketing. The sad part is that we get the stimulus for the change from these triggers but the flame disappears when we are hit with the seemingly more important everyday hassles. You get inspired for a couple of hours to live a more saturated, healthier and more interesting life but then you need to start thinking about what to prepare for dinner, how to finish a project from work on time and about your old friend not inviting you to her wedding. We know that the instinct is still there even though it is in a different upgraded style. The reason it is more complex and even elegant now is because the threat to our survival itself has become much more elaborate. The killer today is not something that is easy to point a finger at and eliminate with a stone drop on the head. Our killer is our lifestyle. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention National Health Report, the main cause of death due to our behavior in the United States is heart disease (23.7% of total deaths) followed by cancer (22.9% of total deaths). Although there is still much investigation to be done in regards to cancer prevention, we know that exercise, diet and stress reduction can all positively contribute to a decrease in heart disease rates. No one is denying that our life is saturated with expectations, struggles

68

basic-magazine.com

and consequent lack of time and abundant stress. But not to worry, we already have the built-in mechanism to get through. We have actively shaped our living space, attenuated the death factors like animals and the instinct probably the only truly common thing until this day among us regardless of the income, race or country that we live in - has changed with us. It is there, just waiting to be found. So just let me remind you, you already know what you need to do and why. More than 7 billion people are surviving in this world right now and the average life span in the U.S. is almost 80 years, according to The World Bank. So we got the survival part figured out, now the biggest challenge is to have quality survival. Therefore, if you want to survive and do it with content value, we need to resurface the instincts to survive in the modern world.

L

x

ife is a connected chain of events, starting from how you respond to an offence to how well you sleep. With the information available in proportion to your curiosity, you can find out that your physical health is correlated with your psychological health. And your psychological health is in turn dependent on how you feel every day. Are you happy with the way you look and with what you do every day? If you are, well then maybe you have got it figured out. If you are not, well, change a seat, change your position and slowly

start turning your wheel where you want to go. Let’s break it down and start with the obvious, which is what I see. I see what you look like. Where did you get your style from? What about your individuality? Do you enjoy putting on your clothes every day? Your instinct is telling you that you want to look good, that is why you snap a selfie before leaving the house. Is it necessary for your quality survival though? Sure. Thinking you look good brings up your self-esteem and people with a higher selfesteem are more successful and that is probably a good indication that you will be earning more money and crossing out some factors that contribute to a shorter life span, for example, poverty. In addition, it feels good when there are more people looking in your direction with admiration. We are the only species that are aware of their mortality and our basic instinct is reaching out to us all the time. Everything that is making you doubt your impulsive decision is probably one of the manifestations of selfpreservation. Oftentimes the answer is simple and obvious – love someone worth loving, dress from your heart, do whatever raises your heart beat before you even start, cook and eat well and focus on the state of happy.

mandala is a spiritual symbol, one commonly used in Indian religions, representing the universe. Combining photography and digital art, along with quotes and spiritual meditations, David Action (Blue Globe Thistle) Bookbinder has created the inspiring book, Fifty-Two Flower Mandalas. Serene, beautiful nature is at the heart of each image Bookbinder has manipulated with design programs like Photoshop. He lists modern psychologist, Carl Jung as an influencer of the project. Jung believed mandalas are a pathway to the essential Self, Bookbinder sharing in this belief, being a psychotherapist himself. Using mandalas for his own healing after a near-fatal accident, Bookbinder shares his work with clients in his treatment room. Bookbinder describes his creation Awakening (White Rose) process as “meditation”. And goes on to say, “My choice of the hexagram (the Star my decision to become a psychotherapist.” of David, “beloved” in Hebrew) as the The sheer simplistic, yet intricate organizing shape for these mandalas was beauty of these flower mandalas provide subconscious, but I believe this choice a calming, euphoric effect. with all that you have accomplished, from you roles in entertainment to your philanthropic works with refugees. What is the inspiration behind your drive? And tell us a little more about your involvement with the UNHCR. I'm inspired by many things. Love and empowerment inspires my music. My coach, Ivana Chubbuck, and I find different inspiration in all of the scripts and art we create. Standing in the fire I would say is the greatest 74

inspiration for me. Not being afraid of what makes me uncomfortable but creating within it. I've been a high profile supporter of the UNHCR for years now. The UNHCR is the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. My mission with them is to raise global awareness and help support them through every avenue they might need, be it social media, public relations, fund raising, refugee interviews. The list goes on and the work never ends. I've

dedicated my life to the agency and hope to continue to contribute whatever is in my power to do so. This issue dives into the instincts that lie within each of us. We all have an animal instinct that allows us to be a little wild and adventurous. What is your most adventurous memory to date? Falling in love I would say. The risk of the human heart and the fragility and trust you have to give is unmatched. That's my first thought. I travel a lot and in 2007 I toured a country each day with the Black Eyed Peas. We went everywhere from Macau to Moscow, Nigeria to London. That was the definition of adventurous and wild. Especially hanging with monkeys in a temple in Malaysia. In touching on our instincts of survival, how do you power through difficult situations along your path? Or possibly share a major obstacle you were able to overcome‌ I'm a tough girl, sometimes too tough. It is never the situations but the people behind them that get you caught up. Learn to be honest, come from the heart, and be stern but loving -- that's how I get through every obstacle these days. When it comes to more public obstacles, I would say bullying, mostly racism and ant-Semitism. I get through by speaking up for myself. I don't believe in staying mum about anything I feel is wrong, whether it be me or more global issues. From the demand of attention to the refugee crisis to gay rights to human rights, if people started to allow themselves the honor and responsibility to speak up for themselves and others, especially others, obstacles are a bit easier to get through. Especially when you know you're not alone.

COVER STAR INTERVIEW WITH KAT GRAHAM BY MANDI PIMENTAL

As women, we must trust ourselves first and foremost, embracing our beauty and wearing it with confidence. As a fashion icon that exudes confidence and sexuality, how do you define true beauty in today’s culture for women? I define true beauty by what you do with it. I love a strong woman that is fully confident in herself and exudes that. As long as you are healthy that's what matters. Loving yourself and refusing to follow what everyone else looks like or does is the key. True beauty is selfempowerment. I'm the face of Wet N Wild beauty and their whole campaign is about staying wild and being free. Being able to take risks with your look and having fun with it is key. I'm hoping to inspire a lot of girls with that campaign. Be free. It's the most beautiful thing. Lastly, gut instinct and listening to our inner voice when it comes to our journeys is key. Where do you feel led in 2016? Share your future aspirations and what projects are on the horizon for the new year‌ I have a lot of work coming up! I'm excited about shooting the Tupac biopic movie "All Eyez On Me" in which I play Jada Pinkett. I start shooting in January. I'm also dropping a new single in March that I wrote with Babyface that is more pop than our last single "Secrets". I'm beyond excited about the show that I am executive producing titled "From The Top" which is a scripted drama following LA's backup dancer scene. I also did an animated movie called QQ speed that we are wrapping up and we are also beginning pre-production on my Tammi Terrell biopic soon. Lastly I am campaigning for Wet n Wild, Foster Grant and Caress, so I'm excited to share those with the world. I'm excited about my continued work with the UN and making 2016 an impactful year as well.

RED

PATCHWORK

JACKETS

Red is hands down the standout color this season. There were great red monochrome looks with a touch of silver or gold jewelry, with a specific standout by Hermes. The most popular was red accessorized with black. A red dress with a thick black belt was a popular runway look that is easy to take to the street. It is dressy without being over-the-top. Dress the look up with some sparkly jewelry and heels or dress it down with black boots and a hat.

Boho chic is taking on new form for new trends in the form of patchwork. There is a strong 70s feel with a touch of folk, but with a more elegant feel than previous seasons. Etro featured a green patchwork jacket that was tailored with immaculate detail, unlike the loose, free spirited boho styles of past shows. A retro hairstyle will pull the look into a more casual boho style, whereas a nice updo will transform it to a night look.

HIGH WAISTLINES An ode to decades past, high waistlines play a huge role in this season’s fashion. The higher the waist, the better. The look pulls emphasis to long lean legs and gives freedom for a more elaborate top without feeling too busy. Puffed shoulders, heavy necklaces or oversized jackets pair well with the look. Add a pair of heels for drama.

SPY. WINTER 2016 TRENDS BY KELLI KICKHAM

SHORT

OVER THE KNEE

SKIRTS

BOOTS

It’s hard when you’re ready for springtime weather, but you’re still living in a winter wonderland. Short skirts can help bridge that gap. It might feel a bit too chilly, but the F/W collections showed us many short skirts paired with long sleeves, tights and coats. Take a high hemline and play with the rest of your look to get the warmth you need and still show a little sass. To take a few cues from the runway, pair a black skirt with strong patterns or a dark jacket with a solid bright skirt.

You’ve been drooling over your shorter dresses and skirts for months waiting for warmer weather. It’s time to bring them back out! This season’s over-the-knee boot trend pairs perfectly with short skirts and keeps your legs warm. Blacks and beiges were popular on the runway, but a few pops of bright colors make it all about the shoes. Solid bright orange boots or color blocked red and black will turn heads, but if you are looking for a more versatile purchase, it is better to stick to the classic color choices.

RED

PLAID It’s a classic look we all know- red plaid. It’s reminiscent of school uniforms or borrowing your boyfriend’s over shirt. It’s a versatile print that can be dressed any way your little heart desires. This season’s runway saw it all over skirts, coats, boots and accessories. A specifically fantastic look came from Vivienne Westwood in the form of tailored suit jackets. On the runway, patterns stacked on other patterns, but for streetwear consider letting your plaid be your statement piece. A weatherappropriate black dress paired with a plaid jacket and black knee high socks makes for a great dressy casual look.

DANIELLE PANABAKER INTERVIEW BY KRITSLE JONES

Danielle, you started your career immediately after you graduated high school at the age of 14. What drove you to want to act at such a young age? I was involved in community theater first, which I loved, and it inspired me to keep going. I've always loved being on set and collaborating with other artists, and that's what I enjoy most about my job. It sounds like you still have some young fans. Speaking of which, congratulations on your Teen Choice Award nomination! How did it feel to be a nominee this year? I was so flattered to be nominated! I am grateful that people respond to the show and to my character. Many celebrities deal with criticism on a daily basis from all different directions. With such young fans looking up to you, how do you handle it? Is your instinct to retract and hide or do you consider it part of the job? One day at a time. Criticism does come with the job; for me it is about finding my truth and following that, regardless of what other people say. Your career has evolved so much since you first started with Disney. Fans have seen you morph from a young star into a sophisticated actress in series such as Bones and The Flash. Your career seems to be ever changing. Do you find that your personal interests and styles have followed suit? Thank you - I love that I have gotten to play so many diverse roles and been exposed to so much. My interests and styles definitely shift as I learn. I love being able to try new things with different characters. And I love finding the "look" of a character and learning about new designers.

"MY STYLE IS FAIRLY CLASSIC WITH A LITTLE SEX APPEAL." Speaking of style, what would you consider your own personal style to be? My style is fairly classic with a little sex appeal. I also love a good mini skirt. You moved from sunny SoCal to a much colder climate in Vancouver to shoot The Flash. What are your cold weather style staples? Layers! How do you find time to give back? I have heard that you enjoy working with non-profits like Art of Elysium‌ I love working with Art of Elysium volunteering specifically with children has always been a passion of mine. The programs at Art of Elysium are so organized and well-run, and since I have been working with them for so many years, I can pop in and go to a hospital whenever I have time off. And one more, just for fun. If you were stranded on an island what would be your three BASIC beauty items? Moisturizer, lip balm, and sun screen!

INTERVIEW WITH BAI LING BY KELLI KICKHAM

You often play a strong fighter on film. Which

actor has been the most fun to “beat up” on screen? The most fun person to beat up was Jude Law in “Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow.” Our director said to me, “Bai Ling, please be very careful because I know how good and crazy you are, just don’t hit Jude Law’s face no matter what you do because we have a lot of close ups to shoot with him.” So when the fight scene started, the director didn’t want me to hesitate and I ended up hitting him right in the forehead! But it all worked out ok. It was fun working with Law because he is sharp and so good at what he does. One of your most dramatic roles to date was in Red Corner, opposite Richard Gere. In fact, that is the role that really got you noticed by American audiences and critics. Did the role take a lot of mental and emotional preparation? That was my very first leading role in Hollywood. I think in a way, yes. But the most challenging thing for me was not the mental and emotional preparation, but my English ability, as at the time I didn’t speak English at all. To me it is always is things outside of my acting ability that I spend the most time with. Red Corner is also the film that resulted in you losing your Chinese citizenship. Did you have any regrets about making the film? My journey is my journey. It is all a wonderful

“MY JOURNEY IS MY JOURNEY. IT IS ALL A WONDERFUL EXPERIENCE IN LIFE TO LIVE AND FEEL THINGS THAT EVEN AT TIMES ARE EXTREMELY DIFFICULT.” experience in life to live and feel things that even at times are extremely difficult. I created a beautiful, emotional, intelligent character that is rarely seen on screen by a Chinese actress in a Hollywood studio movie, and I am proud of that. I want the western people and the world to know and see that there are intelligent, strong, yet feminine Chinese women out there in the contemporary world today kicking butt. Was there ever a specific role you had a certain intuition about, even before filming? Maybe you

went into the audition thinking, simply because the character fit you so well, “This is me. This is mine.” I am so beyond that, I can make any role work. In fact, I’ve played a character that was originally written for a man. I have also played a few characters that were originally written for white female actresses, but through my audition, I got the roles. An example is the film “ The Key”. The leading lady was originally written for a white actress, but I got it. You need to think big in order for things to happen big. I feel if I want to, I can do anything! Often we limit ourselves by being so afraid of failure, only when we are daring then the magic happens.

Outside of film, you’ve worked in television on projects such as Lost and Entourage. Do you have a preference between film and television? To me acting is like living life, there is no bigger or smaller, for me anything makes me happy. I am very lucky to live my life doing things that I love to do, I am grateful for the wonderful projects that come my way, and I am grateful for the many talented directors producers and actors want to work with me. You have done some recent work outside of acting in producing, music and writing. Do you think you will ever turn away from acting to pursue another passion? I love acting, because I am

You work on many action films with heavy stunts. If you could step into one of those character’s lives for a week, which would it be? I already do, as I am “OFTEN WE LIMIT OURSELVES BY BEING SO AFRAID OF FAILURE, all the characters I play. ONLY WHEN WE ARE DARING They are all part of me; they are all real life THEN THE MAGIC HAPPENS.” journeys. Yet there is a secret character that I am creating right naturally so good at it and I can now, and I think I’d like to be that connect to my sexy, feminine side. For me, taking on the role of character for a while. director or producer plays more into You have many projects in the my masculine side. And I would try works including City Limits and those roles if I found a project close Everlasting. Tell us a little about to my heart. I know I have a gift one of your favorite upcoming to give as an actress, so I would be characters and why she is so happy to always be an actress. intriguing. I am interested in them all, because they are all there waiting for me to begin the fun, unique journey with them. I am currently working on my own project, and it can’t be helped that this character intrigues me the most, and excites me the most, because it is so unique and a challenge for me to play. The character is against everything I am.

Your fashion is exciting and eclectic. Favorite piece to date? The ones that I created. One being at the Hollywood Film Festival where I wore the Hollywood sign as my skirt and a red key as my bra. I broke fashion concepts and rules. I wear messages, culture, history. It’s my own art.

Victoria Janashvili is a seasoned photographer, and New York City resident, best known for her extensive work with body image awareness campaigns. Her campaigns and beautiful works highlight dedication to self-love. Humans

are evolved, but still have urges and reflexes. Do you believe that man, at his core, is animalistic in nature? What, no simple warm up questions? [laughs] Well, I suppose that having a background in experimental psychology I’ve developed a degree of insight into human behavior and development; I do believe that at the core, we are all driven and motivated by innate forces that are akin to our animal relatives. I think that what differentiates us as humans is our executive functioning, inhibition and planning. 120

basic-magazine.com

However, having worked with criminal populations, I can certainly appreciate that we are all not as ‘evolved’ as we’d like to think. Do you feel any behavioral restrictions or urges that you have to fight on a day to day basis? Does the insatiable urge for pizza count? Honestly, I think that we all live with behavioral restrictions on a daily basis. Wherever you live, you’re bound by laws, rules, and regulations that are structured upon societal norms. I’m sure we’d all love to act out from time to time, but we’re conditioned to follow those norms. It’s the people that deviate from them that seem to have all the fun and get into the most trouble. [laughs]

JOSH MARIO JOHN INTERVIEW BY JAMES ELIZABETH ARNETT

“MASCULINITY IS CONFIDENCE, AND NOT BEING BOUND BY WHAT OUGHT TO BE ‘MASCULINE’.” something has always been lost on me; I’ll stick to my guns on this one, and leave it to the aesthetics over the meaning. However, that being said, and at risk of sounding hypocritical, I do have a few tiny tattoos that mean the world to me.

Jacket: Belstaff

Your look is associated with the likes of Vikings and pirates. Are the beard and tattoos a way of expressing your inner barbarian? Maybe I just have a really weak jawline. [laughs] Okay, not really. I think that my beard initially developed out of a dislike for shaving. Then add the fact that I’ve always looked younger than I am, I think that having facial hair was a way to combat that perception; when you’re younger you always want to look older. My tattoos are a way of expressing myself to a degree. But mostly I just like the aesthetic of them. For you, are tattoos a cover-up or a reveal? I don’t think that my tattoos are that deep. The perception that tattoos have to carry some special meaning or have to say

Tell us about the sensations you experience when a needle touches your skin. Is it as addictive as we hear? Ugh. I absolutely hate getting tattooed. Honestly, you’ve got to be some sort of masochist to enjoy that awful sensation. For me the addictive part is the end result, the tattoo itself. The sensation is certainly not a pleasant experience for me; and I’ve found that the older I get, the worse the tattooing feels. Granted I can sit for hours like a champ, but I’m dreading each line being laid down. Young men see your images and idealize you as a symbol of masculinity. Does this add any pressure to you to be a role-model? I’ve never really viewed myself as a role model; but I guess what I can’t deny is the inspiration people seem to borrow from my work. The

response I’ve gotten thus far is very humbling. I think that the pressure lies in trying to maintain the standard I’ve set for myself, while at the same time trying to evolve. In terms of masculinity, it’s never been anything I’ve sought to capture or let define me. I think the masculinity comes out strongest in the imagery I choose to share. I think that the imagery itself is highly influenced by the photographers and stylists’ personal takes on the whole beard and tattooed theme. I have a definite soft side but people seem to want to capture the darker rugged side, and I think that by virtue of that I’m more or less defined as such. What does masculinity look like to you? I think that masculinity is confidence, and not being bound by what ought to be ‘masculine’. A truly masculine man can do the most atypical non-masculine thing and still carry that manly vibe. I don’t think that it’s something so easily defined, or something that can be made artificially. Some dudes are just masculine, and there’s no real way to explain it… they just are. 121

JOSH MARIO JOHN INTERVIEW BY JAMES ELIZABETH ARNETT

“WHAT I APPRECIATE MOST IS A DATE WITH MY GIRL, TIME WITH FAMILY, A NIGHT OUT WITH FRIENDS, THAT ISN’T FOR SHOW, HASHTAGGED OR SHARED WITH THE WORLD.”

We live in a world of social media, dominated by the power of likes and shares. How do you contribute or rebel against it? Well, being that a lot of my work comes by virtue of my social media presence, I certainly can’t say that I rebel against it. However, I feel that I’ve carved out my own path, and have steered away from a lot of the pitfalls that people seem to find; whether it be developing an ego, letting numbers define you, or letting social media impact upon relationships. For sure I can appreciate the importance and power of likes and shares, but what I appreciate most is a date with my girl, time with family, a night out with friends....that isn’t for show, hashtagged or shared with the world. You’re an educated man. Do you ever worry that your social media presence will overshadow your academic background? Not at all. My education and career outside of modeling and social media will always be paramount. Social media popularity comes and goes, and that’s just the way it is. My life and my social media persona are on two opposite ends of a spectrum. Most people don’t really care if I have a Master’s degree when they’re looking at a new post, just like my friends and family don’t care how many followers I have. I like having that distinction, and like that those lines don’t blur.

Jacket: Hip & Bone, Pants: Balmain x H&M, Boots: Doc Martens

How does education contribute to your overall happiness? I think having an education is extremely important, and whether you’re using your education directly or not, it comes out and becomes more valuable than most appreciate. I may not discuss statistics and psychological constructs on a daily basis, but I most certainly use and rely upon the experience and tools I picked up throughout my ten years of university. That being said, there are so many other important things and people in my life that contribute to my overall happiness. Education is just another piece of the pie. Do you have any life philosophies that you are willing to share? Any unscientific theories about the world? Laugh more. Oh and never fart in a wetsuit.

INTERVIEW WITH EUGENIO RECUENCO BY SANDY LO

VISUALLY SPEAKING By Sandy Lo

What is your first memory of art and photography? Was there a particular photo or piece of art that captured your attention as a child? The first thing I remember about art were my school trips to the Prado museum. It was a privilege to live so close to it. In terms of photography, the first exposition that I saw left the impression on me that photography was more than capturing a moment. The exposition was of Withkin in the Juan March foundation when I was around 13 years old.

Photography is a proven art form and that fact is driven home in the works of Eugenio Recuenco. Born in Madrid, Recuenco has been published in magazines like Vogue, Twill and Madame Figaro. With a combined classic and Where did you study art and modern flare, Recuenco's photos are bold, photography? cinematic and timeless. I studied Fine Arts in Madrid. 124

I’m titled with a specialization in painting. In photography I’m self-taught. I’ve learned from my errors, adapting them to no longer be errors without forgetting what it taught me. Do you feel that anyone can learn how to capture a good photo or is there a need for natural instinct? It is a question of education and visual experience. Now with internet and the many images that we receive daily, people are

more prepared to see reality from a personal point of view. That to me is photography. Often your photos are described as “CAPTURING A having a cinematographic style. Do QUALITY you agree? PHOTOGRAPH They are what they are and I IS A QUESTION can’t make them be any other way OF EDUCATION and feel them as my own. If they AND VISUAL seem pictorial or cinematographic EXPERIENCE.” it is the same to me. That is simply a perception of the spectator, and each will like something different. Sometimes it is the story, other will enjoy the style or the models. Each

will classify them in one way or another according to their interest. In your field, what photographers or artists do you admire? There are many that surprise me daily on the internet and sadly I don’t remember the names because I have them in my favorites and the industry or art markets haven’t made it a priority to ensure that we know their names.

What or who, inspires most of your work? Life and different perspective towards it. Admitting it but asking it why. Being a creative person, in regards to working with major publications and clients, do your wishes and needs always go along their side or vision? It depends on each case, I always try to work on a project where I have something to say. Sometimes you think that your opinion will be valued and you realize little by little that you have been cornered. 125

We love the bud presented in this edition of BASIC. How was the concept developed? It was an ensemble with the publicity agency. This was an addition that I did with my team to elongate the story and develop our creativity. You have co-directed a music video for the German band, Rammstein. Are there plans to direct other videos or possibly full-length films? I’m always open to doing video clips with artists I have rapport with in regards to joining images. I’m finishing the postproduction of the short "La segunda derrota" (The Second Defeat) that we filmed

earlier this year. We are currently CrowdFunding to make it a reality, and you are all welcome to collaborate with us to help us finish. www.losgirasolesciegos-eugeniorecuenco.com How has your work evolved in recent years? At the same time as me. What is your advice for all aspiring artists around the world? To not let your passion cool with the effort.

AN INTERVIEW WITH LONDON MILLINER VICTORIA GRANT WORDS BY MANDI PIMENTAL

Your designs are cutting edge while still possessing such refinement. Can you tell us a little about your design process? My design process is very instinctive and experimental. As soon as I have an idea, I try to make it - there is no drawing in-between, I am entirely 3D. Sometimes I have absolutely no idea how I will succeed in creating a certain structure but once I have a creation in mind, nothing will stop me! This leads to a lot of experimentation and resourcefulness in searching unlikely places for new materials or components. With all of my designs, be they experimental avant-garde or more timeless and elegant - quality is King - so everything is made meticulously by hand incorporating traditional millinery techniques. Customizing pieces on a private consult basis lends true uniqueness and authenticity to the piece one wears. Do you have a set process that allows the client to collaborate with the creation, or are you more driven by your personal instinct of what would fit them? When doing Bespoke it is important for me to meet the customer and discover a bit about who they are as a person. My objective is to draw out their character, I never just design for style or appearance - it’s about finding and crowning my clients style.

138

basic-magazine.com

Bespoke consultations usually begin with a glass of champagne and chat in my Notting Hill showroom. I love my clients’ reaction when they walk into the showroom - it’s like watching a child discover Narnia. We discuss their personal style and, of course, the event for which they want the hat made. This might be a decadent party or a formal and honorable affair such as collecting an MBE from the Queen at Buckingham Palace. I do a lot of hats for red-carpet events and VIP parties as well, and I have a lot of brides who are looking for something more high-fashion

“I FOLLOW MY INSTINCT RATHER THAN TRENDS AND PREFER TO DISCOVER RATHER THAN EMULATE DONE FASHION.” and nonconformist for their wedding day. Then playtime begins as we move around the room trying on different hats to see which shapes and colors really suit them. My “MY DESIGN objective is to design a piece that PROCESS compliments their bone-structure IS VERY and works to enhance their INSTINCnatural features. One that makes TIVE AND a statement true to them. EXPERIMENTAL.” You have accessorized some of Hollywood’s most elite, such as Madonna and Beyoncé, as well as the modeling world’s own Kate Moss and Cara Delevigne. Is there someone you dream of creating a piece for, either from the past or present? Well, that is a hard one! There are so many fabulous characters out there. I suppose Coco Chanel

would have to be [at the] top of my list. Obviously having begun as a Milliner herself - it would be a great honor to create something that she would find fabulous and fun! I would like to design her one of my Light-Up Neon hats covered in pearls with a feather that almost touches the sky. Can that be arranged? Your pieces range from elegant and sophisticated, to whimsical, to sharply modern. What is the inspiration process that drives you to what you will create next? My process is quite impulsive. I am inspired by everything around me, especially art. I follow my instinct rather than trends and prefer to discover rather than emulate done fashion. I have always had an untamable imagination and my best ideas come through daydreaming. Music is really important in finding this flow. Each hat takes such a long time to create, that it is really important that I enjoy the whole process. I enjoy beauty, humor, elegance and mischief - you will find all these elements amongst my designs. I’m happiest when in my creative bubble! Any insight into the creative trail we can see you blazing in 2016? Are there any new techniques you are excited to try or are currently implementing? I am crazy excited about 2016! We have a smoking hot collaboration and some unusual projects, but I’m afraid that at this moment I’m sworn to secrecy. You will have to watch my website, http://www.victoriagrant.co.uk/.

MOSKSTRAUMEN The Moskstraumen or Moskenstraumen is a system of tidal eddies and whirlpools that forms at the Lofoten archipelago, Norway, in the Norwegian Sea. Mosktraumen represents the unexpected, relentless and violent instinct of creation that haunted me last night giving light to this project.

t

It originates from a combination of several factors, the dominant being the strong semi-diurnal tides and peculiar shape of the seabed, with a shallow ridge between the Moskenesøya and Værøy islands which amplifies and whirls the tidal currents.

LIBRA , is the seventh astrological sign in the Zodiac. It spans the 180–210th degree of the zodiac, between 180 and 207.25 degree of celestial longitude. Under the tropical zodiac, Sun transits this area on average between (northern autumnal equinox) September 23 and October 22, and under the sidereal zodiac, the sun currently transits the constellation of Libra from approximately October 16 to November 17. The symbol of the scales is based on the Scales of Justice held by Themis, the Greek personification of divine law and custom. She became the inspiration for modern depictions of Lady Justice. The ruling planet of Libra is Venus. Libra is one of the three zodiac air signs, the others being Gemini and Aquarius. Libra was known in Babylonian astronomy as MUL Zibanu (the “scales” or “balance”), or alternatively as the Claws of the Scorpion. The scales were held sacred to the sun god Shamash, who was also the patron of truth and justice. It was also seen as the Scorpion’s Claws in ancient Greece. Since these times, Libra has been associated with law, fairness and civility. In Arabic zubānā means “scorpion’s claws”, and

It is also popularly known as maelstrom – a Nordic word for a strong whirlpool which originates from the Dutch combination of malen (to grind) and stroom (stream). This term was introduced into the English language by Edgar Allan Poe in 1841, through his short story "A Descent into the Maelström".

likely similarly in other Semitic languages: this resemblance of words may be why the Scorpion’s claws became the Scales.[citation needed] It has also been suggested that the scales are an allusion to the fact that when the sun entered this part of the ecliptic at the autumnal equinox, the days and nights are equal.[8] Libra’s status as the location of the equinox earned the equinox the name “First Point of Libra”, though its position ended in 730 because of the precession of the equinoxes. Libra is a constellation not mentioned by Eudoxus or Aratus. In Roman mythology, Libra is considered to depict the scales held by Astraea (identified as Virgo), the goddess of justice. Libra is mentioned by Manetho (3rd century B.C.) and Geminus (1st century B.C.), and included by Ptolemy in his 48 asterisms. Ptolemy catalogued 17 stars, Tycho Brahe 10, and Johannes Hevelius 20. It only became a constellation in ancient Rome, when it began to represent the scales held by Astraea, associated with Virgo. Libra is the only zodiac sign that does not symbolize a living creature.

Under the tropical zodiac, the Sun transits this area on average between June 21 and July 22, and under the sidereal zodiac, the Sun transits this area between approximately July 9 and August 15. The symbol of the crab is based on the Karkinos, a giant crab that harassed Hercules during his fight with the Hydra. Along with Scorpio and Pisces, Cancer forms the Watery Trigon. The Watery Trigon is one of four elemental trigons, fiery, earthy, airy, and watery. When a trigon is influential, it affects changes on earth. Cancer is said to be the house of Neptune and the exaltation of Jupiter, both astronomical bodies having influence over those born under Cancer.

The story of Cancer the Crab is said to be connected to Hercules. Some storytellers say that during Hercules’ fight with Lernaean Hydra, Hera, sent a crab to snap at Hercules’ toes because Hera had sworn to kill Hercules. Hercules was able to kill the crab by smashing its shell with his foot. As a reward for its efforts serving her, Hera placed the crab in the sky and it became Cancer. “Hail Cancer, keeper of Hades, wearing the mask of the deads you carry, making light in the dark and dark in the light, ravens of midnight sing chants of the abyss, Cancer, while thou descend with sails of Jupiter the flow of the Styx at the mountains of madness”

Under the tropical zodiac, the Sun transits this area on average between August 23 and September 22, and under the sidereal zodiac, the sun currently transits the constellation of Virgo from September 17 to October 17. Individuals born during these dates, depending on which system of astrology they subscribe to, may be called Virgos or Virgoans. The symbol of the maiden is based on Astraea. She was the last immortal to abandon Earth at the end of the Silver Age, when the gods fled to Olympus – hence the sign’s association with Earth.

The bright Spica makes it easy to locate Virgo, as it can be found by following the curve of the Big Dipper/Plough to Arcturus in Boötes and continuing from there in the same curve (“follow the arc to Arcturus and speed on to Spica”). Due to the effects of precession, the First Point of Libra, (also known as the autumn equinox point) lies within the boundaries of Virgo very close to β Virginis. This is one of the two points in the sky where the celestial equator crosses the ecliptic (the other being the First Point of Aries, now in the constellation of Pisces.) This point will pass into the neighbouring constellation of Leo around the year 2440.

SCORPIO, is the eighth astrological sign in the Zodiac. It spans the 210-240th degree of the zodiac, between 207.25 and 234.75 degree of celestial longitude. Under the tropical zodiac, the sun transits this area on average between October 23 and November 22, and under the sidereal zodiac, the sun currently transits the constellation of Scorpius from approximately November 16 to December 15. In Ancient Egypt, Scorpio was the equivalent of the serpent. Serpents were worshiped by ancient Egyptians. In Egypt, not only are there serpents of the houses, but each quarter in Cairo had a serpentguardian (Lane). Before the discovery of Pluto in 1930, the planetary ruler of Scorpio was considered to be Mars, but modern astrologers tend to use Pluto as the sole ruler.

n

Ot

Those born under this sign are in ultimate control of their destiny. It is life on the Scorpion’s terms, too, since these folks promote their agenda (they are quite the executives) and see to it that things go forward. Others may find this overbearing and even self-destructive, but that’s the beauty of the Scorpio: they have tremendous regenerative powers, much like the literal Scorpion can lose its tail and promptly grow a new one. Fearless Scorpios rarely lose; they just keep on going, since they are stubborn and determined to succeed. Scorpios work as hard as they do so they can someday sit back and feel satisfied with themselves. These folks are intense, passionate and filled with desire. They’re also complex and secretive, so don’t expect to get much out of them, lest they become suspicious and exit stage left. It’s best not to bet against Scorpios, either, since these folks are surprisingly resourceful.

YOU MAY RECOGNIZE Haley Ramm from such shows as ABC Family’s “Chasing Life” or from “X-Men: The Last Stand”. But what you may or may not know about this actress is that she is now the celebrity ambassador for AARDA (Autoimmune Related Diseases Association). Being someone who personally suffers from an autoimmune disease (lupus), I jumped on the chance to find out more about how this actress is

giving back. Haley first got involved with AARDA after her own mother was diagnosed with four autoimmune disorders. As AARDA celebrity ambassador, Ramm has put 166
