DOUBLE HEADER SEABL WOMEN – 6:00PM SEABL MEN – 8:00PM TONIGHT’S GAME IS SPONSORED BY
FROM THE FRONT OFFICE The penultimate weekend of the home and away season and while finals are locked in for both teams there is still so much uncertain about where our teams will finish and who they will play in week one of the finals series. Our men need to beat Nunawading tonight and then have them drop another one of their two remaining matches against Melbourne or Canberra to sneak into 2nd and have a crack at Mt Gambier in the first weekend of the finals. If Nunawading don’t lose another game regardless of tonight’s result we will finish 3rd and then it’s anyone’s guess who we will play. Sandringham, Kilsyth and even Albury Wodonga are all still a chance to finish 4th. On the women’s side we have a big weekend ahead of us. A double header against two good sides could determine our chances of finishing first. Again our fate is in the hands of the team above us. We are locked together on loses with Kilsyth, but have an extra game to play. If we maintain our strong performances and win our remaining three games, we need to hope that Kilsyth drop one of their last two against Albury or Sydney Uni. Either way we will play Kilsyth in week one of the finals for the right to host the Conference Grand Final. It’s just a matter of whether it’s home or away. So on to tonight; firstly a big thank you to our game night sponsor Bay FM. As one of our media partners they provide us with an amazing avenue to promote our game nights and players. Tonight is the last chance to see Chantel Horvat at home before she heads to UCLA. While we would love to have Chantel here for the finals, we are so excited for her to begin her college life and we wish her the best of luck for the next four years in the USA.
I hope you have a great night, cheer loud and let’s get the Supercats over the line tonight. The next home game is next Saturday night, 5th of August against Albury, the Luina Geelong Supercats women tip off at 5:00pm followed by the men 7:00pm. Enjoy the night #SeeRed #SupercatsFamily Regards, Dean Anglin CEO
MATCH DAY PREVIEWS MEN Luina Geelong Supercats (3rd East Conference 14-8) vs. Nunawading (2nd East Conference 15-6) Geelong Arena, Friday 8:00pm WITH a SEABL record 20th consecutive playoff appearance locked away, the Luina Geelong Supercats will look to keep alive its hopes of snatching second spot in the East Conference from Nunawading when it hosts the Spectres on Friday night. If Geelong can beat its modern-day rival, it will then need to overcome Albury-Wodonga in the final round. In turn, the Supercats also need one of Melbourne or Canberra to upset Nunawading in Spectres final two games of the season. When the two teams last met in Round 10, Geelong outscored Nunawading 25-18 in the final period to claim a 79-73 victory. Nathan Herbert paced the Supercats’ scoring with 18 points, while DeMarcus Gatlin (14 points and 10 rebounds) and former Spectre Ma’alo Hicks (12 points and 13 rebounds) both posted crucial doubledoubles. Veteran big man Simon Conn did all he could to get Nunawading over the line with a monster line of 18 points and 17 rebounds as well as three assists and three steals. As per usual, star guard Shane McDonald was the catalyst for much of the Spectres’ offence as he finished the contest with eight assists. Hicks and Eric Gaff are both likely to spend time trying to limit the influence of Conn inside at the key at both ends of the floor. Gaff will be full-of-confidence after posting a season-high 18 points in last week’s narrow victory over Sandringham. Kris Blicavs is likely to be given the task of trying to keep the ball out of McDonald’s hands.
WOMEN Luina Geelong Lady Supercats (1st East Conference 15-4) vs. Nunawading (5th East Conference 8-10) Geelong Arena, Friday 6:00pm & Sandringham (7th East Conference 5-13) @ Sandringham Basketball Stadium, Saturday 5:00pm CHANTEL Horvat will make her final appearances for the Luina Geelong Supercats in this weekend’s crucial home-road double. However, the UCLA-bound star won’t have the chance to just cruise into college life. With Sara Blicavs on FIBA Asia Cup duty with the Opals in India for another week, star big Alex Bunton’s season as a good as over following knee surgery, and veteran guard Alex Duck still a week away from returning from holiday, Horvat will be the lynchpin for Geelong. The good news is, if last week’s win over Sandringham is any reflection, is she won’t have to do it alone. The likes of Ebony Rolph, acting captain Isabella Brancatisano, sister Charlotte and guard all stepped up to ensure another victory against the Sabres. Rolph has been particularly impressive in recent weeks. She is averaging 14.6 points per game in her last five outings, including 21 against Sandringham. Isabella Brancatisano has also relished the extra responsibility. Her 17 points against the Sabres followed 15 against Bendigo, well above her season average of 8.9 points per game. While the last meeting with tomorrow night’s opponent Sandringham was just last week, the previous meeting with Nunawading came back in Round 10. On that night, the Lady Supercats used a 19-8 third period as the catalyst for a 60-50 win. With Blicavs absent, Horvat proved to be the difference between the two teams as she poured in 21 points. At the other end, Spectres star Marena Whittle paced the scoring for the home team with 19 points.

CLUB NEWS MY RUSSIAN EXPERIENCE SEABL women: College calling for Geelong Supercat Chantel Horvat DAMIEN RACTLIFFE, Geelong Advertiser July 27, 2017 12:00am
CHANTEL Horvat will live her long awaited dream when she flies out to America next week to start her college Lady Supercat Chantel Horvat will play her final two matches this season before stint. heading overseas to college in the US. picture: Glenn Ferguson But it means her Supercats campaign will be cut short, denying her the chance to compete in the SEABL playoffs next month. Horvat will play her final match for the Supercats tomorrow night before flying out to California next Saturday. The 19-year-old admitted she would have loved to finish the SEABL season. “I keep telling that to everyone, how I wish I could push it back a little bit or miss summer school so I could finish out the season with the Supercats, but unfortunately it is what it is,” she said. “The Supercats knew that from day one; it’s just a shame because I’ve created such a great bond with my teammates and we all love playing with each other. It is disappointing I won’t be there but I’ll be cheering them on.” The 185cm power forward agreed to terms with UCLA in September last year, after considering a stack of offers from rival schools. “I was really fortunate to have a lot of great schools chasing me, but UCLA, there was something about it that I always knew I wanted to go there,” she said. “They’re really big on the holistic development of the athlete and they have that family culture and I just loved what they were about. They were all about growing as a person on and off the court. “For a long time I didn’t know what I wanted to do, whether I wanted to stay in Australia or go over there. Some of my really close friends that I lived with went over to college, and I kept in touch with them. “All of a sudden it clicked, I didn’t want anything else, I just wanted to go to college. It’s such a great opportunity, it would be such a shame to let it go. “Ever since then I haven’t regretted the decision, I’m so excited to go over there and I’m really lucky to have a lot of people that have gone through that and can help me.” Horvat is yet to select her subjects, but expects to pursue studies in business. “As well as being able to provide me with a great basketball program, they’re also going to be able to provide me with many other opportunities that not many other schools can,” she said. “I’m super excited about being able to study and play basketball. Really, it’s a two in one for me, being able to be able to get a free degree and do what I love. “I can’t wait to get over there and get stuck into it.”
CLUB NEWS MY RUSSIAN EXPERIENCE A swish new lease on a Belmont warehouse will house Basketball Geelong Navarone Farrell 26 JUL 2017 THE ink is dry on a $250,000-a-year-deal for the new home of Basketball Geelong. The 5000sq m, two-warehouse amenity at 20 Crows Rd, Belmont, will be converted to a basketball centre when the association moves in. Darcy Jarman, Geelong West, agent Tim Darcy said that the lease will run for 10 years initially.
“It’s going to be converted into a basketball centre,” he said. “The property is 20 Crows Rd, Belmont. They’ve taken a 10 year lease on the property where we understand they’ll do a full conversion.” The warehouses were formerly timber stores. “It’s an old timber warehouse, it’s part of the old Belmont timber set up, there was a Home Hardware there,” Mr Darcy said. “The total warehouse size is more than 5000sq m with the two warehouses combined, with about 230sq m of office space.” Despite the large size of the warehouse, the league will still need to use external courts, however believes the new venue will cut down from running between six to seven venues, down to two or three, according to Basketball Geelong CEO Dean Anglin. “From our point of view, we’re trying to consolidate what we do a little bit. The six courts at Crows Rd won’t be big enough for us on their own — we’ll still need external facilities — but instead of using six or seven venues on a weeknight, we can break that down to two or three,” he said.
