TONIGHT THE SUPERCATS ARE SUPPORTING THE GEELONG BASKETBALL LEAGUE CLUBS
FROM THE FRONT OFFICE It’s CLUB NIGHT, a new initiative from the Supercats to showcase our domesitc association and our amazing local clubs. Leading into tonight’s game our clubs have been able to sell tickets to the game, with 50% of the money collected being retained by the club as a fundraiser. At the time of printing the clubs had raised more than $2300 for themselves which we hope will help them to continue providing the outstanding service they do to their members. To our domestic club members, If this is your first Supercats game, welcome, we trust you will enjoy the night as much as our other patrons, partners and members do and we look forward to having you at many more games. Our games nights are meant to be fun, so make as much noise as you can, build your own custom poster and get into the spirit of Geelong’s Best Night In. Both teams had strong wins on the road last week in Frankston with the men up 101-77 and the women up 88-56. It was great to see Alex Bunton red hot on the boards, raking in 17 rebounds and proving multiple opportunities for her team mates to score. Her high quality game earned her a spot in the Round 7 SEABL TEAM OF THE WEEK, as did Nathan Herbert’s 34 points in just 28 minutes… for those that were there, and might I say THANK YOU to so many supporters for making the trip… Nathan Herbert’s 28 minutes was effectively 24 minutes straight and 4 minutes at the back end of the 4th quarter, when he handed over the reigns to fellow veteran Jamie Medved late in the 3rd, Herbie had already score 32 points. Meddy in game 350 then went on to score 21 points himself, including 5 from outside the arch. An update for all on the progress of our proposed stadium at 20 Crows Road, Belmont. Our planning application is in and has passed the first hurdle, we are currently in the public feedback phase and hope to have the green light by mid-June so we can get the ball rolling. The stadium will house 6 courts and become the new home of Basketball Geelong Inc. Our goal is to make this stadium the best it can be and we are asking for a little help from our members and supporters to make that happen. You can make a tax deductible donation via the Australian Sports Commission with all of the money donated being directed into the development and sustainability of the Crows Road facility. Our goal is to raise $500,000 before October 1, we have currently raised a little over $7500 so have a long way to go, but we are on our way and every dollar help. If you can afford to donate, we would love that assistance you can do so by following this link. https://asf.org.au/projects/basketball-geelong/awa-alliance-bank-stadium/ On to another night of Supercats basketball. I hope you have a great night and enjoy the fun and games with our club members during the night. Everyone is competitive right? #SeeRed #SupercatsFamily Regards, Dean Anglin CEO
MATCH DAY PREVIEWS MEN Luina Geelong Supercats (3rd East Conference 6-3) vs. Bendigo Braves (4th South Conference 5-6) @ Geelong Arena, Saturday 7:00pm Saturday night’s meeting with Bendigo is the Luina Geelong Supercats first return bout of 2017 – and coach Leon O’Neill will be hoping for a similar result to the Round 3 meeting at Bendigo Stadium. On that night in early April, Geelong claimed a 74-63 victory thanks to an 18-9 final period and on the back of 25 points from superstar veteran Nathan Herbert. The Supercats have again put themselves in the hunt for a top-two finish with consecutive wins over Frankston and Canberra. The win over the Blues last week coming thanks to a stunning 35-22 third quarter, where Geelong shot the ball at an impressive 81.3 per cent. After dropping both games of their Tasmanian road-double in Round 6, the Braves returned to form with a 92-71 hiding of Mt Gambier, thanks to a 64-28 first half. Import pairing Dyami Starks (32 points) and Charles Aiken (23 points, 14 rebounds) were both outstanding. “We will be working hard to come up with a way to reduce the impact their dangerous import pairing of Aiken and Starks as well slowing down their very good local players,” Supercats coach Leon O’Neill said. “Another all-round team game will be needed if we are to extend out winning streak to three.”
WOMEN Luina Geelong Lady Supercats (3rd East Conference 5-3) vs. Bendigo Braves (2nd South Conference 7-2) @ Geelong Arena, Saturday 5:00pm Challenges in SEABL women’s basketball get no greater than Bendigo, which is exactly what the Luina Geelong Lady Supercats are facing on Saturday night. This is the first of two meetings for the season between the two country Victorian rivals and Geelong coach Dave Herbert will be keen to see where his group is really at after three consecutive wins, the last two over Frankston and Canberra coming with talented big Alex Bunton back in the roster. The Lady Braves will be keen to bounce back quickly after falling to Sydney Uni 85-78, their first loss since being pipped by a point by Nunawading in Round 4. As usual they are stacked with plenty of talent, led by Chloe Bibby. A teammate of Lady Supercat Sara Blicavs at WNBL club Dandenong, Bibby is averaging 19.9 points per game. However, she was missing from the loss to the Sparks. As well as being able score the ball, Bibby is also handy on the boards, averaging 7.9 rebounds per game. A win for Geelong will help consolidate its spot inside the East Conference top four.
CLUB NEWS MY RUSSIAN EXPERIENCE BIG WIN INSPIRES VARLEY 18 May 2017 | Geelong Advertiser | DAMIEN RACTLIFFE
LEWIS Varley is hoping to relive one of his junior basketball highlights when he represents Country Victoria in the Big V Origin All Star series next month. Varley, 24, last pulled on the Big V as an under-16 as a member of Country Victoria’s historic win over Vic Metro in the national championships in Kalamunda, Perth in 2008. The Big V Division 1 men’s player said his selection came as a surprise. “It kind of came out of the blue. It’s exciting,” Varley said. “I represented Country Vic all through juniors. In under-16s over in Perth we actually won for the second time in 50-odd years, that was pretty good. “This is definitely my first time as a senior.” The former SEABL Geelong Supercat spent a year at the Corio Bay Stingrays before returning to the Supercats to lead the Division 1 team this season. He said playing under different coaches had helped him to better learn his game. “Different coaches is one of the biggest things, getting exposed to different types of coaching, different times of game play,” he said. “When you’re with Geelong the whole time, you don’t get stuck but you’re in one type of program the whole time, but going away to say Corio Bay or a Melbourne club you play a different style. And it’s never going to hurt, knowledge is everything in basketball.” With ambitions to return to the Supercats’ SEABL roster, the guard said areas for improvement were straightforward. “Probably leadership is a big part and I suppose consistency with the jump shot, but probably just being a leader and having a level head,” he said. “When you get to that next level I guess there’s a fair bit more pressure with every play.” Varley said he was looking forward to the exhibition game. “It will be good, I’m definitely going to remember back to what it was like in the junior days, especially to be able to take it to Vic Metro, because that’s who we beat in the final in under-16s,” he said. “A lot of it is exposure, too, being able to play in a game like this you get exposed all at the one time.” Supercats Jackson Bentley and Jack Burnett are also in the Country team along with Stingrays duo Jordan O’Leary and Michael Rebula.

CLUB NEWS MY RUSSIAN EXPERIENCE WATSON ECSTATIC WITH SELECTION 18 May 2017 | Geelong Advertiser written by DAMIEN RACTLIFFE
GEELONG Supercats’ Jess Watson has been honoured with a second straight selection for Country Victoria in the Big V Origin All Star series next month. The Big V Division 1 star has continued her scintillating form to be reselected for the representative match, which heads from Shepparton to Casey this year. Watson said she expected this year’s game to be even greater. “I think it was big for a little country town Shepparton and I think it will be bigger this year in Melbourne,” she said. “I suppose they packed out the stadium they had but the capacity probably wasn’t as big as what it will be at Casey this year. “Last year was a lot of fun; it was the first year they’ve done the Origin series, so it’s great to be able to play in it two years in a row and see it grow.” One thing Watson, 26, is looking forward to is reuniting with teammates from her junior days. “I represented Vic Country in under-16s and under-18s at various events so that’s one of the thrills as well that some of the teammates I’ll be playing with I played with back in under-16s, so it’s a bit of a reunion … as well,” she said. “I think it’s an honour just getting out for Geelong every week, so when you’re recognised and get selected to play in that Big V team, representing all the different divisions, I think it’s a really big honour. “We’ve got some really good players who are usually giving us headaches week in week out, so it’ll be fun getting to suit up with them for once and their talents actually working in our favour instead of trying to shut them down.” But while Watson plays a defensive role for the Supercats, she said she expected a more attacking brand of basketball on June 10. “I don’t think that there’ll be a huge amount of defence played,” she quipped. “I think they’ve chosen some people that can shoot the ball, so I think it’s one of those things where we’ll all have to take the game on and get off our shots when we’re open. “There could have been a lot of people in my shoes, so it’s just really nice to be recognised. I feel really special and it’s something I’ll hold dear for the years to come. “I don’t know how many more years I’ll get to play in something like this for, so it’s taking that opportunity and being pretty happy with it for now.” Others in the 10-woman Country team to face Metro on June 10 include Supercats’ teammate Caitlin Shadbolt and Corio Bay Stingrays’ pair Tamara Knox and Teagan Tatlock.
