FROM THE FRONT OFFICE It’s been a huge week for the Luina Geelong Supercats, firstly both the Men and Women walked away with the W against Kilsyth last Sunday. With the women getting up over Kilsyth it brings them one step closer to claiming top spot in the East. Also it was a crucial for the Men’s finals campaign to secure the win, it wasn’t the best offensive game but our defensive efforts to hold Kilsyth to just 62 points made sure we had a comfortable gap. During that game Nathan Herbert brought up his 6000th points in SEABL, this outstanding accomplishment has been achieved with Nathan averaging over 17 points per game over his 350+ games career. Nathan has played his whole SEABL career at the Geelong Supercats and with the calibre of player he is, choosing to play just at one club just cements his loyalty and the type of character Nathan is. Well done Nathan. In other news, Alex Bunton and Sara Blicavs have been named in the Australian Opals team that is due to tour India from July 23-29, the FIBA Asia Cup is the Opals’ first venture into the Asian zone and they will fly out for the tournament on July 17. This is a fantastic achievement from both Alex and Sara and is a true reward for all their hard work and dedication to the game. This weeks game against Melbourne Tigers will see the return of two Supercat legends, Shane Heal and Cal Bruton. Cal arrived in Geelong as a 25 year old in 1980 and lead one of the great teams of the era. The NBL Hall of Famer has only fond memories of his five-year stint in Geelong, in which the Cats — later the Great Shape Cats and now the Supercats — won everything bar an NBL title.
Shane Heal came to Geelong from the Brisbane Bullets in 1989, he won the Most Improved in the NBL in 1990 while at the Geelong Supercats. Shane has had many career highlights including representing the Australian Boomers at the 1992, 1996, 2000 and 2004 Summer Olympic Games, captaining the team in 2004 in Athens. Heal Also represented Australia at numerous FIBA World Championships. Finally, we have the keys to the AWA Alliance Bank Stadium and the building works are now underway, the completion date will be late this year. This is a very exciting next phase for our association and ultimately will see more basketball played in the region making our great game even stronger. The next home game is this Friday night, 21st of July against Sandringham, the Luina Geelong Supercats women tip off at 6:00pm followed by the men 8:00pm. Enjoy the night #SeeRed #SupercatsFamily Regards, Dean Anglin CEO
MATCH DAY PREVIEWS MEN Luina Geelong Supercats (3rd East Conference 12-8) vs. Melbourne (7th South Conference 5-13) Geelong Arena, Saturday 8:00pm WITH an elimination final appearance growing more likely by the week, the Luina Geelong Supercats will use Saturday night’s meeting with Melbourne looking to build some momentum ahead of the playoffs. The Supercats would need to win out and have Nunawading lose three of its remaining five games – including a Friday night clash at the Arena on July 28 – to snatch second spot and a meeting with Mt Gambier in a semi-final. However, more pressing is making a 20th consecutive post-season appearance a formality. Beating the Tigers, who hold the SEABL’s third-worst record, would mean Albury-Wodonga, which has lost five consecutive games, and Sandringham have to go through their last five undefeated to unseat the Supercats. Geelong didn’t have it all their own way when they last meet Melbourne, with the Supercats having to hold off a fast-finishing Tigers to hang on for a three-point win at Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre in Round 4. Usual suspects DeMarcus Gatlin (23 points and 10 rebounds) and Nathan Herbert (18 points and seven rebounds) scored the best part of half of Geelong’s points that afternoon. Melbourne has had a couple of solid weeks, beating Hobart – which was too good for the Supercats just a fortnight ago - and Frankston. Import Ari Stewart (19.7 points and 6.7 rebounds per game) and young gun Tom Wilson, who has signed for European club Partizan Belgrade, will need to have their output limited by Geelong.
WOMEN Luina Geelong Lady Supercats (2nd East Conference 13-4) vs. Bendigo (1st South Conference 125) @ Bendigo Stadium, Saturday, 6:00pm AFTER taking care of one conference leader last week, the Luina Geelong Lady Supercats will look to do the same to the pacesetter in other conference this week. Having cut Kilsyth’s lead in the East to half-a-game, but failing to grab head-to-head against the Cobras, Geelong will now need to go through the remainder of the season undefeated, and have Kilsyth lose at least one more in the run to the playoffs. For the Lady Supercats, their next challenge is Bendigo. The Lady Braves hold a one-game advantage on both Dandenong and Launceston, with each having five matches remaining. When Geelong last met Bendigo, a Sara Blicavs inspired Lady Supercats poured in 38 points on 74 per cent shooting, as well as hauling in 11 rebounds, grabbing six steals and dishing three assists in a stunning all-round performance. Chantel Horvat was also crucial with 19 points and 10 rebounds, while Eve Braslis gave us the first glimpse of her undoubted talent with 11 points in less than seven minutes. Bendigo is reliant on Blicavs’ WNBL teammate Chloe Bibby and import Chante Black for the bulk of their scoring. Bibby is averaging 18.6 points and 7.1 rebounds per game, while Black is contributing 14.2 points and 10.1 rebounds. Black’s fellow import Ashley Rininger is the only other member of the Bendigo roster averaging in double figures. Geelong will again be without veteran guard Alex Duck, who remains overseas, while Blicavs and Alex Bunton will make their final appearance until early August with both part of the Opals squad that is headed to India for the FIBA Asia Cup next week.
CLUB NEWS MY RUSSIAN EXPERIENCE SEABL men: Nathan Herbert cracks the 6000-point mark for Geelong Supercats WES CUSWORTH, SEABL MEN, Geelong Advertiser July 9, 2017
The Geelong Supercats have celebrated a milestone game for evergreen scorer Nathan Herbert, defeating Kilsyth by 17 points, 79-62, on Sunday at the Arena. Herbert scored 14 points, clocking up his 6000th point for the Supercats as the region’s elite outfit reversed the result of Friday’s heavy loss to regional archrival, and cross-conference leader, Ballarat, 10784. “He currently sits on 6010, it’s a tremendous effort for a very hardworking player,” coach Leon O’Neill said post-game. “Night in, night out, he’s one of our best and to score 6000 points is phenomenal.

“I know he’s been at it a long time, but it’s a record that will be very hard to break and hopefully he’s got a few more left in him yet.” Geelong led by two points at quarter-time, and five at the half, but took until the last quarter to break the shackles, leading to the comfortable 17-point margin. “We had a game plan coming in and I thought we did a pretty good job, defensively sticking to that game plan and they’re severely undermanned, losing a quality player last night in Daniel Dillon,” O’Neill said. “But we did a good job of guarding people the way we wanted to guard them and just wore them down a little bit. “They had to play last night (Saturday) and we had that extra day’s rest and that was helpful, it’s a win and we need a win at this stage of the season and we’ll certainly take it.” Herbert’s 14 points followed his 18 against Ballarat, while DeMarcus Gatlin and Ma’alo Hicks enjoyed 36-point and 27-point weekends. Geelong was beaten on the glass by one rebound, 44-43, but clearly held the edge in points-in-thepaint, 40-30. The Cobras turned the ball over 26 times to the Supercats’ 20; a statistic that proved telling in the final result. “That sets us up now for a finals run and makes it really tough for Kilysth to feature in the finals, which is good for us, we need to make it as hard for as many teams as we can and now we’ve got to get ready to focus on Melbourne coming into next week,” O’Neill said. “The Melbourne Tigers are on a run; they’ve won their last couple and we’re going to need to be better than we were today if we’re going to come away with a win.”
