ABDEL HALEM HAFEZ; THE EGYPTIAN DREAM This month marks the 40th anniversary of the death of legendary Egyptian singer Abdel Halem Hafez. What made Halem a phenomenon not an ordinary singer, apart from his talent and pure voice that made him nicknamed as the nightingale, is the fact that he depicts the Egyptian dream of the revolution. Born in a small village in Al Sharqia Governorate, Abdel Halem was the fourth child of Sheikh Ali Ismail Shabanah. He had two brothers, Ismail and Mohammed, and one sister, Aliah. His mother died from labor complications three days after giving birth to him and his father died five years later, leaving him and his siblings orphaned at a young age. He lived in a poor orphanage for a number of years. He was later raised by his aunt and uncle in Cairo. During these years Abdel Halem was extremely poor. The story of Abdel Halem was like a fairy tale of an Egyptian poor kid who made it to the top and became the most established, loved and hailed Egyptian singer of all time, that people commit suicide on his funeral. He was nicknamed

as “The Voice of The People”, “The singer of 1952 revolution” and many names that reflects the feeling Egyptians felt about him. He was one of the people; a familiar face that looked like any average Egyptian young man you would meet which strengthened the intimacy people felt about him. Despite the fact that 40 years passed on his death at age 47, Abdel Halem songs were never forgotten specially the patriotic ones that were the fuel of 25th of January revolution about 35 years after his death. His songs were full of passion and love that made a young generation, that didn’t get the chance to meet him, sing his songs and try to change their reality and hard living conditions again with the same lyrics and music he used decades before to let the Egyptian dream live, and give those who were unprivileged the chance to have their names written in gold in the pages of history, like Abdel Halem Hafez did. May his soul rest in peace, and long live the Egyptian dream.

Here’s why You Won’t See Natalie Portman In Thor: Ragnarok

Maintaining a healthy relationship while constantly saving the world, and occasionally other worlds, is hard work. It takes a lot of time, patience, and commitment. And at the end of the day, it was all just too much for Thor’s girlfriend, Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), who won’t be making an appearance in this year’s Thor: Ragnarok . In fact, it’s official: Thor and Jane have split. For his part, however, Thor has kept himself particularly busy since the breakup. “He’s off exploring the universe, still trying to police it and control the mayhem,” Hemsworth told EW. “But he’s certainly enjoying being a drifter, being a solo cowboy out there. Kong: Skull Island Roared Its Way to Box Office Victory

‘Avatar 2’ Won’t Hit Theaters in 2018

Audiences will have to wait a little longer for more Avatar, says James Cameron. The sequel to the 2009 sci-fi blockbuster, which grossed $2.7 billion at the global box office, had not officially been dated, but it was expected for Christmas 2018. Cameron has plans to add four Avatar films to the franchise, all of which he has been developing simultaneously. In April of last year, Cameron said that all of the scripts were complete and that the majority of the cast was already in place. Stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana and Sigourney Weaver are all set to make a return trip to Pandora.

It’s been a really, really great couple of weeks at the movies — especially for the smashing, slicing, dicing, bone-crushing kind, as Kong: Skull Island is picking up where Logan left off as far as adrenalinepumping action goes at the box office. As it made off with a solid $10+ million over the projected earnings for the film, this comes as good news for Warner Bros., and better news for fans who are into the idea of classic monsters making a comeback: The end of Skull Island sets us up for another pulse-racing adventure, this time with the most terrifying lizard of them all taking on the great gorilla in Kong vs. Godzilla. We’re not going to be seeing that showdown for quite some time as the release date is set for 2020.

RIMMEL LONDON INTRODUCES NEW SCANDAL ‘EYES RELOADED MASCARA EXTREME VOLUME, EXTREME WEAR, EASY TO REMOVE

ABEILLE ROYALE-NEW EYE CREAM

While the eye contour is the most mobile area of the face, it is also the most delicate. The skin tissue there is thin, and the dermis less dense. As a result, the deep tissue tends to become prematurely damaged. Aware of these issues, Guerlain Research is offering a new Eye Cream boasting an exclusive royal jelly used in an extremely high concentration in this new formula from its laboratories. It takes on the appearance of a truly rich and silky smooth balm, directly inspired by royal jelly, to form an ultra-fine film across the eye contour. It instantly smoothes, sculpts and envelops the whole eye area, offering targeted action for an intense treatment to replenish the youth of the eyes with each application.

In early summer, a miracle takes place: the lush grass suddenly disappears beneath a creamy cloud, and a sweet scent fills the pure air, as thousands of Reine des Prés flowers burst into bloom. Then, over the following days, their petals, initially cream in colour, gradually lighten to an immaculate, dazzling white. Organically harvested for L’OCCITANE, Reine des Prés is incorporated in the Reine Blanche Complex, together with white mulberry and vitamin C or salicylic acid, depending on the product, for a brightening action.

NEW BEGINNING HOW TO START OVER

AFTER

A BREAK UP most of us, if not all, have

gone through a break up at least once in their life. Whether this break up was our own decision, our partner’s, or due to circumstances, it still is not easy to just get over it and move forward. We can’t just press a button and forget this person that we’ve been with for a long time or forget all the memories that we shared. But having said all that, it is also not impossible to start over. In fact, sometimes good things come out from break ups. It could be a chance to rediscover ourselves and what we are capable of. This spring Nora Abdallah shares with you some of the tips and advices that could help start over after going through a break up.

LOUNGE 26

ALLOW YOURSELF TO GRIEVE Losing a relationship is one of the hardest things to go through. We feel pain, hurt and betrayed. Allowing yourself to grieve is an important part of the healing process because if you don’t allow yourself to grieve and repress pain it could lead to an explosion later on which will be more painful and destructive. So, have a good cry or you can express your emotions by writing them down. Find healthy ways to grieve and release your pain. It is so normal to feel bad and broken after a break up, but the most important thing is that after grieving and crying you have to pull yourself up and start working on moving on. ACCEPTANCE AND RELEASING THE GUILT The first step you should do after grieving is accepting that you did your best in this relationship. Don’t waste your time and energy in beating yourself up. Stop feeling guilty about the choices you made because no matter what you did or didn’t do the outcome would have been the same, it ended. Learn to forgive yourself and accept what happened. START REDISCOVERING YOURSELF Now you need to work on yourself. Your relationship was only a part of your life not all of it. You have to start thinking of who you are and what you used to do before being in this relation. Ask yourself questions like who do you want to be now? Where do you want your life to go? What do you want to do with your life now? It’s true that this process could be overwhelming, but you have to detach yourself from what you were during this relationship and start regaining your independence to start feeling like your own self again. TRY NEW THINGS Start dong new things. May be there were things that you always wanted to do or try a long time ago but you were just so consumed in this relationship and investing all your time and energy in it. Now is the perfect time to start pursuing them. It could be some hobbies like learning to knit, taking a design class, learning a new language or start practicing a sport that you always liked. If you are not working, then maybe it’s time for you to start looking for a job that fits your abilities and your talents. If you are already working you can start focusing on your career and set new goals and challenges to develop and enhance yourself more. Keeping yourself busy and getting out of the house and your routine to try new things is the best way to feel like you are taking control of your life again.

TRAVEL & MEET NEW PEOPLE Travelling is also a great way to help take your mind of what happened. It could be by visiting and exploring places in your own country that you’ve never been to before, or you could travel to a new country and start getting to know other different cultures and meeting new people. If you decided to travel you can either do it alone as a chance to free your mind and focus on yourself, or you could go with close friends if you need to have someone to talk to, it’s totally up to you. ASKING FOR HELP There is no shame in asking for help, whether from friends, family or even getting professional help. Talk to trusted loved ones who have known you for long and saw you go through different struggles in life and getting out of them. They can also help by telling you their own experiences and how they got over heartbreaks. Remember that there are people out there who love you and care for you but they are just waiting for you to open up and reach out for them. DON’T GIVE UP ON LOVE Some people tend to build walls after getting their heartbroken to stop themselves from falling in love again. But why let a failed relationship define you? You should know that every time you get into a relationship there is a risk. There is no guarantee that it’s going to last forever. It is better to think that this risk is worth it because you never know when you will actually meet the right one for you. Try to think of it as a lesson you’ve learned and experiences that you had to go through in order to deal with different situations. DON’T RUSH Even after doing all these things, you are not just going to forget and feel good in a blink of an eye. You have to give it time and be patient. Know that nothing last forever even pain. Take each day once at a time, enjoy what you do and embrace it and you will find that you are gradually forgetting and healing. Finally, know that regaining your independence and starting over is not a task on a to-do list that can be checked off. It takes time to feel good and move forward. But each day that passes by while you are pushing yourself and trying, is a day that you should be proud of. And then you will wake up one day and you will find that you haven’t thought about that person and this lost relation. You’ll have a whole new life with you in control, a life you created and you actually enjoy living it. It’s a new beginning with all the possibilities that life could offer.

What intrigued you about the film and about your character, Conrad? After I completed shooting Crimson Peak, producer Thomas Tull pitched Kong: Skull Island to me. I’ve loved King Kong since I was a child, and to be in a new and original iteration of the Kong myth is very exciting to me. For Conrad, I wanted him to be someone who begins his journey as a hardened and world-weary warrior. His experiences on the island give him a new humility in the face of the wonder and power of the natural world, which Kong represents. The film was shot on some of the most exotic locations on the planet, including several in Vietnam. What was that like? Vietnam is absolutely breathtaking. I’ve never been to that part of the world before. It is an area of great natural beauty, and it became the central visual template for Skull Island. The Vietnamese people were so kind, hospitable and welcoming. The film is set in 1973. How does the time period play into the story? It’s a really fascinating time in history because of the technological breakthroughs that enabled the mapping of Earth in a new way. There were also big political and social changes sweeping the globe. So the year 1973 is a very exciting time in which to set this story. The Vietnam War was coming to an end that year. What is the impact of the war on some of the characters? This film does raise questions about the nature of war, but also explores the bravery and courage of soldiers. There’s a scene which I play with Brie Larson where she’s asking me about Conrad’s history. He responds that he became a tracker for the SAS because his own father was lost in the Second World War. Conrad has dedicated his life to recovering lost soldiers. He tells her that no man really comes home from war. The soldier characters, led by Samuel L. Jackson’s Lt. Col. Packard, have experienced the unimaginable in Vietnam, yet most of them are humbled by Kong and the other giant creatures of Skull Island. What was it like working opposite Samuel L. Jackson? Sam is a very fine actor and a consummate professional. We had already worked on Avengers, so we had a rapport and a mutual respect. It’s fun to go toe-to-toe with Sam; it’s like playing tennis with Novak Djokovic. Conrad is a very physical character. How did you train for the role? I see it as a condition of my job to be in excellent physical health, especially for a film like this. With Kong: Skull Island, the role required a particular level of stamina because Conrad is ex-SAS. I tried to replicate the fitness level of those elite soldiers, so I trained with two former British Royal Marines and one former US Navy Seal. The physical discipline of training with them helped me a lot with the role.

a

mira Tharwat talks to actor Ahmed El Fishway in an up-close and personal interview about his latest movie ‘El Erd Bytklem’, his tattoos and what they stand for, and his coming acting projects.

How did the idea of ‘El Erd Bytklem’ come about? The idea came from Peter Mimi, the writer and director. He began writing the film and Sief Oraibi, the producer, became enthusiastic about it. That’s how it all began. Who offered you the role? The director offered me the role. The chemistry between you and Amr Waked was obvious on screen, how was the atmosphere behind the camera? Amr is an old friend of mine and we admire each other very much. So everything went great behind the scenes. In our profession, we call it “playing” a role, so that’s what we truly felt. We went in depth with these roles, and not just dealt with them superficially. Each tattoo has a story behind it, what was the first one and what did it stand for? The first tattoo I ever had was of the letter ‘S’ and it stood for Shereen Reda, who was someone I admired greatly and I still do. Which tattoo you regret doing the most? I never regretted a single tattoo.

LOUNGE 36

When shooting how long does it take the makeup team to hide all the tattoos? It depends, if they’re trying to cover my hands alone, it takes from 10 to 15 minutes. If it’s my arms, it takes 30 minutes. If it’s my entire body, it takes about 45 minutes. Who is the actor you still dream of acting with? Johnny Depp and Demi Moore. You’ve been into a lot of relationships, what are the lessons you learned finally about women? That they’re the best thing in the world. What are the traits you love the most about your father actor Farouk El Fishawy and the traits you wish he never had? He’s a very kind and generous man. You always think out of the box, what are the things ‘in the box’ that you hate the most and would love to change in our society? I believe we should stop judging each other based on appearances. Tell us more about the most anticipated movie ‘El Shiekh Jackson’… I consider Sheikh Jackson a truning point in my career as an actor. It will be a very important movie and Amr Salama has written it in such an intelligent and sensitive way. I think it will attract international audiences and not just Egyptians, because Michael Jackson is loved by a lot of people across the world. When is it expected to be out? It will be released in August. What is the movie you enjoyed watching the most? And the book? The last novel I read is related to my upcoming project which is called El Lagna, an adaptation of the novel by the same name. It was the novel that I enjoyed reading the most recently. I also like a little book called The Movie Book. What is your favourite perfume? I don’t think I can answer that since it would be considered an endorsement. What are you working on? I’m working on El Lagna, which is written by Sonallah Ibrahim.

THERE’S SOMETHING ABOUT

Sally Shahine a

mira Tharwat talks to TV personality Sally Shahine who made her big comeback recently to TV through her hit show Dah Kalam aired on DMC channel. The 2002 Miss Egypt reveals all about the media figures she aspires to, her favourite place for relaxation and who she will be with this Easter.

Tell us more about you… Studied Mass Communication Zodiac Sign: Sagittarius Marital Status: Single You were Miss Egypt for 2002. To what extend do you feel it paved the way for your success as a TV presenter? I had already joined Miss Egypt competition in order to make it easier for me to be TV presenter after some trials. So its impact was only at the beginning of my career, and by time the glow surrounding Miss Egypt faded away and what remained is my work. What did you like the most about Dah Kalam programme? Dah Kalam is just the beginning of what I really want to do. But to change from entertaining programs to social ones it has to come step by step. How did the idea of Dah Kalam come about? Since 2003 and I have a picture in mind for what I exactly want to present to the audience. So, Dah kalam is just the first phase for me to discuss social life topics in a light way, then the next one could be more to

the side of social discussions. Who were the guests you enjoyed interviewing the most on the show? Without diplomacy I really enjoyed all my guests who joined our show because each one has a completely different taste. The show is a light one that spreads positive vibes to the audience, was this intended? Yes, TV shouldn’t always be about breaking news. So it’s good that from time to time we get to watch a light show just to draw a smile on the audience faces and I hope we succeeded in doing that. You don’t like making seasons for your TV shows. What is the reason behind it? It’s never the presenter’s choice, it is always related to the TV network you are contracting with, and I am the kind of person who always wants to change. Who are the TV personalities you aspire to? Ellen DeGeneres Dr.Hala Sarhan Sanna Mansour Mahmoud sultan

Who are the public figures you still dream of interviewing? Dr.Magdi Yacoub Ellen DeGeneres Oprah Winfery Queen Rania You are taking acting courses, why didn’t you start your acting career yet? In the past I used to refuse the idea of acting, but now I am open to try something new and take the chance of trial. What inspires you when it comes to fashion? Everything simple! That shows your beauty How do you stay fit? I am not the kind of person who watches her weight at all. But I like to eat healthy and light food by nature and I am not a big fan of desserts. What is your favourite perfume? Mademoiselle by Chanel. What is your favourite hotspot for spring? Gouna Where will you spend Sham El Nesem? Family always come first!

CAN YOUR DNA TELL YOU ABOUT YOUR DIET, LIFESTYLE, AND FITNESS?

Dr. Ahmed Ihab, M.D., PhD.

Professor of Molecular Pathology and Genetics Head of Genetics Unit, Genetic Diagnostic Center Email: ahmed.ihab@gdc-egypt.com Mobile: 010 999 222 05

w

hy individuals experience different health outcomes even though they eat similar diets and practice comparable lifestyles is an important question that’s been on the minds of nutrition and other healthcare experts in the medical community for decades. If we have two men of the same age who eat a diet low in fruits and vegetables and high in sodium and saturated fat. One develops hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, and eventually atherosclerosis, while the other lives a long life without such chronic disease. We know now for sure that the answer lies in our DNA.

LOUNGE 42

The relationship between what you eat and your genes is given the term Nutrigenomics or Nutrigenetics. The Science of Nutrigenetics is based on the fact that all humans are almost 99.9% genetically identical with genetic variation that occurs in about 0.1% of our genes. These changes in the DNA sequence are called genetic polymorphisms or Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs). This knowledge can be applied to offer people personalized nutrition based on their genetic makeup in order to live a healthy and vital life. How can these SNPs impact greatly our body metabolism? These naturally occurring variations (mutations) makes everyone one of us unique in terms of how we handle nutrients, toxins, respond to exercise and our liability to develop diseases. Our genetic makeup influences different body systems like the cardiovascular system and body muscles; it also affects the fat and sugar metabolism, food allergies and intolerance as well as substance dependences and caffeine metabolism. Some people poorly metabolize certain nutrients (Vitamins, minerals, caffeine, nicotine,…) which implies to take certain measures to prevent the development of some diseases. How can Nutrigenetics help me to live a healthy perfect life? Heart diseases, atherosclerosis, thrombosis as well as stroke may result from elevated levels of homocysteine in the blood. Inadequate nutrition and gene diversity contribute greatly to the elevated homocysteine level in the blood. By using adequate nutrition and dietary food supplements that contain vitamins B12, B6 and folic acid, the level of homocysteine can be reduced. Therefore, genetic analysis is very useful in identifying mutant genes responsible for homocysteine metabolism and in taking the proper nutrients to prevent the consequent complications. On the other hand, hundreds of genes are involved in the regulation of insulin secretion and glucose metabolism. Specific gene variants directly affect those processes, which is the reason why some people are particularly prone to the development of diabetes. Type I Diabetes mellitus, develops when there is a decrease in insulin release with elevation in the blood glucose level, while type II diabetes occurs because the insulin that is produced has a reduced effect (insulin resistance). For example, genetic polymorphisms/variation in TCF7L2 gene renders individuals more prone to type II diabetes, therefore they must pay more attention to their diet and follow healthy lifestyle recommendations.

Many individuals are suffering from food allergies and intolerances. Some people experience abnormal pain and digestion problems after drinking a single glass of milk which is due to their inability to break down milk sugar – lactose. This is called lactose intolerance. Certain racial groups are known not to tolerate milk and the incidence of lactose intolerance in the Mediterranean countries is approximately 15 times higher compared to European countries. Recently, scientists have identified a genetic polymorphism in the MCM6 gene that encodes an enzyme called lactase which predicts whether the person will suffer from lactose intolerance or not. Even our minute daily habits dictate just how close we move towards the outcomes we desire. Take caffeine as an example, while some people are energized and stimulated by a single cup of coffee, others can drink large quantities of coffee at a time and feel no effect. This difference is partly due to a partially developed tolerance of those individuals who regularly consume caffeine drinks, but also due to genes that vary among individuals. Gene variants that encode certain enzymes determine how fast one will metabolize (decompose) caffeine. Research has determined that in people who metabolize caffeine slowly, consumption of 2 to 3 cups of coffee per day can significantly increase the risk of heart attack. On the other hand, according to some research, drinking coffee in fast metabolizers of caffeine can actually reduce the risk of heart attack. Our body’s ability to detoxify substances and its antioxidant capacity Researchers have shown that people have variable response to pesticides, cigarette smoke, exhaust gases and other industrial waste. Normally the body detoxifies itself to prevent the onset of health problems. This could be achieved through a healthy balanced diet and some enzymes like SOD2. SOD2 gene codes for an enzyme which neutralizes free radicals. Mutations in this gene require the person to consume huge amounts of antioxidants to successfully fight

free radicals. Vitamin C is an essential nutrient that’s necessary for the synthesis of collagen and the inhibition of oxidative damage. A recent study investigated whether genetic variations in the gene that codes for the enzyme glutathione S-transferase—which helps maintain the antioxidant capacity of vitamin C—had any effect on serum vitamin C status. Interestingly, individuals with at least one of two specific genetic polymorphisms within the glutathione S-transferase gene had an increased risk of serum vitamin C deficiency if they didn’t meet the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for vitamin C. This study suggests that it’s important for people with these polymorphisms to meet the RDA for vitamin C to maintain blood levels associated with normal physiologic function and prevent scurvy (vitamin C deficiency). Nutrigenetics has raised another important question, “Do weight loss have genetic basis?” A very recent research paper conducted by Stanford University that involved more than 100 women revealed that gene-based diet can increase weight loss 3 times faster than a traditional diet. People who eat according to their genetic code achieve more weight loss. It is extremely important for successful weight loss to know the right amounts and ratios of macronutrients in your daily nutritional intake. Therefore knowing how many carbohydrates, proteins, saturated fats and unsaturated fats you should eat daily plays the most important role in your weight loss management plan. Even with muscular strength and endurance, humans are born with different levels. Nutrigenetics focuses on genes related to metabolism and muscular potential. Your DNA can tell you about your muscular potential and what type of physical exercise best suits your genetic profile. Returning to our initial question at the very beginning of this article; Can your DNA tell you about your diet, lifestyle, and fitness? The Answer is simply…YES for sure!

VITAMIN C

?

PREVENTS COMMON COLD IS THIS A FACT OR A MYTH

Ingy Hashad

PhD of Biochemistry – German University in Cairo Healthcare Nutritionist – American University in Cairo Nutrition Consultant at Inshape Clinics

a

s we witness the weather change from winter to summer season, a lot of us feel cold coming. If you are like many people, you drink a lot of orange juice or take vitamin C supplements to ward it off. Do these tactics really help prevent a cold? This month Dr. Ingy Hashad brings us the truth and the myth about Vitamin C.

LOUNGE 44

It is well known that vitamin C is important for a healthy immune system. A deficiency of vitamin C can seriously weaken the immune cells ability to detect and destroy invading microbes, increasing susceptibility to many diseases and illnesses including the common cold. Many people have taken vitamin C supplements to prevent the common cold, basing their behavior on its actions of enhancing our immune function. Interestingly, scientific studies do not support this action! A recent review of many of the studies of vitamin C and the common cold found that people taking vitamin C regularly in an attempt to ward off the common cold experienced as many colds as people who do not take it .However, the durationof their colds was reduced by 8% in adults and 13.6% in children. Interestingly, taking vitamin C supplements regularly reduced the number of colds experienced in marathon runners, skiers, and soldiers participating in exercises done under extreme environmental conditions.

How Much Vitamin C Should We Consume?

Although popular opinion suggests that our need for vitamin C is quite high, we really

require amounts that are easily obtained when we eat the recommended amounts of fruits and vegetables daily. The RDA for vitamin C is 90 mg per day for men and 75 mg per day for women .The Tolerable Upper Intake Levelis 2,000 mg per day for adults. Smoking increases a person’s need for vitamin C; thus, the RDA for smokers is 35 mg more per day than for nonsmokers. Other situations that may increase the need for vitamin C include healing from a traumatic injury, surgery, or burns

toxic doses. Taking a mega doseof vitamin C is not fatally harmful. However, side effects of doses exceeding 2,000 mg/day for a prolonged period include nausea, diarrhea, nosebleeds, and abdominal cramps. - Vitamin C enhances the absorption of iron. This action is beneficial to people who need to increase iron absorption. It can be harmful, however, to people with a disease called hemochromatosis, whichcauses an excess accumulation of iron in the body

- Fruits and vegetables are the best sources of vitamin C. Because heat and oxygen destroy vitamin C, fresh sources of these foods have the highest content. - Also potatoes, strawberries, tomatoes, kiwi fruit, broccoli, spinach and other leafy greens, cabbage, green and red peppers, and cauliflower are excellent sources of vitamin C But please bear in mind that cooking foods, especially boiling them, leaches their vitamin C, which is then lost when we strain them.

- Scurvy is the most common vitamin C deficiency disease. The symptoms of scurvy appear after about 1 month of a vitamin C deficient diet and include bleedinggums loose teeth, wounds that fail to heal, swollen ankles and wrists, bone pain and fractures, diarrhea, weakness, and depression. In summary, it appears that, for most people, taking vitamin C supplements regularly will not prevent colds but may reduce their duration. Consuming a healthful diet that includes excellent sources of vitamin C will also help you maintain a strong immune system. Taking vitamin C after the onset of cold symptoms does not appear to help, so always remember that prevention is better than cure.

Sources of Vitamin C:

What Happens If We Consume Too Much Vitamin C?

- Because vitamin C is water soluble, we usually excrete any excess. Consuming excess amounts in food sources does not lead to toxicity, and only supplements can lead to

Head of Marketing and Communications Department at Conrad Cairo Hotel Tell us more about you I graduated from Ramses College, this school built my character. Then I graduated from Hotels and Tourism, Helwan University Guide section. I worked in many Hotel chains, first at Le Meridien Heliopolis, then Concorde El Salam. I also was among the opening team of Radisson Blue Hotel, I have joined the Dusit Thani Hotel opening team. Finally, I worked at Conrad, the luxury brand of Hilton. I gradually advanced till I became Marketing Manager at Conrad. My zodiac sign is Scorpio & I like this sign so much. The best trait of Scorpio is that they are very kind people, but you have to be very honest with them and don’t play games. They are very straight to the point and if they have something in their mind, they will do it whatever it will cost from time or money.

What were the biggest challenges you encountered in order to reach such distinguished position? Actually there weren’t many challenges, but it’s very hard work. I am always very keen about what I am working on. It must be 100% or nothing at all. I don’t accept less than that. This is actually my character and I am the same way both at home and work. What distinguished Conrad Cairo Hotel from any other 5 stars Hotel in the capital? Conrad Cairo Hotel is the luxury brand of Hilton, and as you know, Hilton is the biggest Hotel chains in the world and there is only one Conrad branch in Egypt. Also its location overlooking the Nile is an amazing one. Besides being one of the top Marketing directors in Egypt, what are your hobbies? I love travelling so much. communicate very well and he understands the nature of my work and he is open-minded. How do you see the future of business in Egypt in 2017? I’m very optimistic about business in Egypt, whether Tourism or Economy. Tourism is starting to get back like it used to, but we just need a lot of effort from the Ministry of Tourism. We need big publicity in other countries as well as opening new markets there. We need the Ministry of Tourism to open markets in countries like Eastern Europe other than only the German and English ones. What are your tips for the upcoming entrepreneurs who want to succeed in the business world? They should always be attentive to details. They must always be on time, I respect punctual people so much. Also it is important to love what they are doing. Any special offers for this Easter? Yes, there is room package and brunch package. It costs 357 LE and includes a belly dancer show, D.J, and activities for children and egg hunting. The Easter Brunch at Jayda is not including taxes.

Tell us more about you I’m a typical versatile, enthusiastic, witty and humorous Gemini; at least I think I am. I am a mom for two ten-year old twins, and I believe I have stopped aging since my 25th birthday. I am the Senior Director of Public Relations and marketing Communications Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts Egypt. What were the biggest challenges you encountered in order to reach such position? I wouldn’t actually call them challenges, challenges are usually accompanied with a negative connotation, but I believe otherwise; they are often learning experiences and steppingstones. Among the experiences I faced was learning to make as much time for my family as I do for my work, and you never stop learning how to do that, but I think I’m doing a good job so far. Four Seasons Hotel Cairo at Nile Plaza is one of the most sophisticated hotels in Egypt and worldwide, how do you manage to keep its distinguished position among other hotels in Cairo? Four Seasons is a brand that has always been synonymous with world-class-luxury, and one-ofa-kind experiences; we strive to make sure that above all, the promises we make to our guests are always fulfilled, even when it comes to the tiniest of details. Four Seasons Hotel Cairo at Nile Plaza sets the bar in the region for luxury hospitality, and many wonder about the secret behind our success; it is being a family. We honor the Golden Rule every day, ensuring that every single employee feels like they belong, through that extra step we take, that small yet significant kind gesture we make, and the genuine belief that we are family. We have a wonderful family who is passionate about the brand – together we make sure that Four Seasons Egypt is always, and will always be, the best choice to make. Besides being one of the top Marketing directors in Egypt what are your hobbies? Every mother will be able to relate when I say that spending time with my kids is my favourite pastime – we don’t just spend time sitting though, you’ll probably find us jumping around on trampolines, going on a shopping sprees, or pranking one of our friends. I also love travelling and swimming. If you were not working in the hotels industry, what would you like to be? A ballerina! I have always wanted to wear a tutu to work.

Behind every successful woman a man or herself? A husband, family, friends, a community, and everything in between; I am thankful for everything and everyone who has helped me get to where I am today, and I can never deny their roles in my life and the best of all is my mom. How do you see the future of business in Egypt in 2017? As I previously mentioned, I am an absolute optimist – and Egypt is one of the greatest countries in the world –a destination that is on the bucket-list of all travellers, it would be unfair to be anything but hopeful towards a more accomplished business level in Egypt for 2017. We have started sensing more demand from various markets and we anticipate a stronger

return of business this year as Egypt continues to stabilize both its economy and security situation. What are your tips for the upcoming entrepreneurs who want to succeed in the business world? Do the job with all your heart and learn from everything – most importantly the mistakes. Make them as much as you can, but definitely learn from them, and you will never stop developing. Any special offers for this Easter? We have an exciting Easter coming up, with exclusive rates and wonderful events lined up to welcome the warm spring breeze! The interior designer Beatriz Silveira, responsible for the redesign of Vincci Centrum, was inspired by the glamour of the 50’s and the Scandinavian design. The white and neutral colors invaded the walls, floors and lounge ceiling as well as all of the public areas of the hotel, bringing a greater sense of space. Beatriz used noble materials, such as Aristea marble evoking luxury and sophistication and natural oak to contrast with the bronze. The interior designer wanted to give its own personality to this 4-star property of the VincciHoteles, by using materials and brands that combined design, quality and originality. For this project Beatriz was looking for an equilibrated contrast and harmony between colors, materials and patterns. The choice fell over those that enhance the light of the space, create warmth and a sense of coziness.

LOUNGE 64

1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7.

You are very competitive especially around men. You are a feminist at heart and believe there is nothing men can do and women can’t. You believe the only cancer of this planet is men, and you day dream of a life without beards around you. You never consider marriage except for having kids. You believe you are a smart-ass and are always right and know best.

You are not open to the idea of being married, wearing a wedding gown and having a hotel reservation for a big wedding party. You don’t see or focus on anything in your life rather than your career; it’s all what you live for.

8. 9. 10. 11. 12. 13.

When it comes to practising sports, you never go for Zumba or belly dancing or even walking on the treadmill, you go for a more masculine sport as kick boxing. It’s always your way or the high way.

You are very good with calculations and very bad when it comes to music, poetry, emotions or anything right brained. A man to you is nothing but a sperm donor. The idea of wearing Lingerie makes you feel sick. You hate to show your tears in front of people no matter how close they are to you.
