THE D WORD Domestic violence is a chain that doesn’t end especially when it comes to a man beating his wife. Some women believe that if they accept this mistreatment in silence as long as it is behind closed doors no one will be able to see it then life is peaceful and the imaginary image she is drawing of a lovey-dovey marriage couple will last. Actually behind this door is a third being who knows the secret, the emotional pain kids suffer when they see their mom being punched is incurable. The image will be engraved in their memory for a very long time and they will never forget how their father was mistreating their mom. However, the disaster comes when the kids see their mom accepting this as the norm so they grow up knowing that it is ok to beat your wife when you grow older, humiliate her as long as you will apologize later and life will go on. Thanks to Naseeby We Kesmetak TV serial aired on
CBC channel for highlighting a lot of vital issues in our society. This kind of disgusting relationship should never last. I always believe that marriage can’t prevail with the three taboos; beating, cheating and taking drugs as it will eventually lead to the other two. My message to all women out there is that you are precious, don’t ever let anyone convince you with something else, you are worth being treated properly and don’t ever accept a life you don’t deserve because of your kids; they will suffer more when they see the mistreatment you receive by their father. Close the door and open a new one where you can raise your kids in a better environment as how you feel about yourself will be reflected directly on how they feel about themselves when they grow older. Please don’t miss our well said page this month on the biggest 10 fears in life and how to overcome them.

Nicole Kidman on Physical Transformation in ‘Destroyer’: ‘It’s My Job to Push Through’
In the upcoming film “Destroyer,” Nicole Kidman is barely recognizable, donning prosthetics that change her nose and bone structure to play a Los Angeles cop traumatized by an undercover operation gone wrong. But Kidman said she hopes her face doesn’t take the audience’s attention from her performance. “As an actor, I’m so protective of my characters, so it hurts my feelings if the nose is…about that performance,” the actress said. “If it’s brought down to the physical, then I didn’t do my job properly.” “It’s my job to push through all of that,” Kidman said.
Fans are eagerly awaiting any kind of details about Avengers 4, the sure-to-be climactic finish to this iteration of the MCU. Very little is known about the movie at the moment. Gwyneth Paltrow shared a behind-the-scenes photo of herself with Robert Downey Jr. on Instagram, writing “Lunchtime #pepperony.” That’s a pretty clever hashtag, but the real news is that Avengers 4 involves Pepper in some way. As to the specifics of the role, we’ve got a few ideas. There are a few different ways to read Pepper’s involvement. One is that she survived The Snap and is in a couple of scenes in Avengers 4, dealing with the fallout of half the universe being wiped out. Paltrow has previously teased that there’s a time skip between the two Avengers movies, and that Pepper and Tony will have a child.
The Charlie’s Angels Reboot Is Going To Have More Than 3 Angels
Where are the kickass female action stars? On the heels of the MCU and movies like Atomic Blonde, the upcoming Charlie’s Angels reboot starring Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott, Ella Balinska and Elizabeth Banks could be the heroes the genre needs. Freshlynamed Charlie’s Angel Kristen Stewart explained in an interview that the reboot will feature a whole network of angels who work together to get the job done. While the new Charlie’s Angels will certainly center on the team of three women, they will likely have run-ins with more ladies in various locations around the world ready to provide back up. This kind of world in an action film sounds unique and refreshing, especially since it signals that the cast will be even more female than one might have realized.

relationships
Mistakes you should avoid repeating in
your new relationship
o
K, you’re having yet another relationship problem. Does the problem seem familiar? Have you done these things and said these things before, in your prior relationships? Please pay attention to those warning signs. You may be repeating old mistakes that will lead you to the same unhappy place. Or, you may be able to look back on more than one relationship and see patterns that are similar in all of them. In order not to repeat these mistakes and learn from your previous relationship and how you acted back then, Nora Abdallah will mention some of these mistakes that you might have done before and need to be careful about them in your new relationship.
Moving too fast It’s not surprising that new relationships can move at a very fast speed. In fact, you and your partner may be so intensely into each other that you end up skipping certain relationship steps that are actually necessary in order for you to really get to know one another. Specifically, you may start making big decisions about your future together or spend a lot of time with your new partner’s friends and family before really getting to spend quality time with just him. And while your speed approach can often be blamed on the pure thrill and excitement of your new relationship, it’s important to keep in mind that these intense feelings of adoration and devotion can fade over time. So if you don’t put in the needed time it takes to build a strong connection with your partner, you might end up in another failed relation. Being too clingy When it comes to new relationships, it’s also important that you don’t become too needy or clingy with your new partner. And while you may be so excited with your new man that you’re tempted to text or call him nonstop, want to spend every second with him, and always need to know what he’s up to
LOUNGE 20
and if you can join, not giving him his space is only going to create space between the two of you. So in order to avoid having your partner feel as though you’re smothering him, it’s important to continue to be the confident and independent person you are if you really want your relationship to work in the long run. Remember that you probably did that in your previous relationship and it sure played a big part in making it fail. Comparing your new partner to your ex Another major “don’t” in a new relationship is to compare your new partner to your ex. And whether things ended in a good way with your ex or not, always comparing your new partner to your ex is only going to make it that much harder to develop a deep and fulfilling connection with this new man in the future. After all, when you’re constantly comparing your partner to your ex, a part of you is still stuck in the past and will inevitably prevent you from fully investing in a new relationship. And while your ex was important in the way he helped to shape the person you are today and can help you understand what qualities and characteristics you value in another person, it’s crucial that you leave the past in the past, not only for your own personal
health and happiness, but for the health and happiness of your new relationship. Thinking it won’t last Another major faux pas for any new relationship is heading into it with the idea that it won’t last. In fact, there are many different reasons women place this kind of negative expectation on a new relationship, such as they believe the relationship falls into the “rebound” category and couldn’t possibly develop into something serious, or perhaps the man they’re with isn’t their usual type, so there’s no real long-term potential. However, when you enter into a new relationship expecting it to be short-lived, you’re actually laying the groundwork for this type of outcome to manifest itself. So rather than heading into a new relationship already thinking that it’s going to fail, it’s important to keep an open mind, engage in positive thinking, and let the relationship develop on its own, free from any negative energy that can inevitably lead to its demise. You just never know. Overlooking red flags This is the opposite of the previous point. While you may think your new partner is
practically perfect and you want this relation so much to work because you failed in your previous one, it’s important that you don’t let all this prevent you from seeing any possible red flags. For instance, if your partner disrespects you, tries to control you, acts recklessly, or is emotionally or physically abusive in any way, it’s important that you don’t turn a blind eye to these kinds of negative behaviors just because you are afraid of failing again. In fact, these actions are actually key indicators of the type of man he truly is, and in many cases, these detrimental behaviors can often escalate and exacerbate over time. And if you choose to ignore these warning signs or think that you can change and mold him into the partner you want him to be, you’re highly mistaken. Worrying too much
When it comes to new relationships, it’s also important that you avoid turning into an obsessive worrier. In fact, many women become completely stressed and anxious over the state of their new relationship and end up thinking a lot about every single issue that may or may not even be present. It is true that after failing in a relation one tend to worry too much that this new one could also fail. However, constantly worrying is actually going to affect your relationship in many damaging ways. So the next time you find yourself worrying and obsessing over your new relationship, it’s important to keep in mind that this kind of stress can directly contribute to your relationship’s demise. Playing mind games
If you’re in a new relationship, it’s also important that you stop playing mind games. For instance, if you find yourself wanting to make your partner jealous, purposefully not texting him back right away, or choosing to
be vague and inconsistent about your true feelings and intentions — these kinds of mind games will actually cause you to lose your relationship. In fact, sending mixed messages
and engaging in emotional power plays with your partner will likely come across as clear indicators that you’re not yet ready for a serious commitment and that you are not mature enough to be in a real relationship. And since building trust in a new relationship is based upon openness, honesty, and mutual respect, playing these types of mind games is only going to undercut your efforts to create a meaningful and long-lasting connection. Threatening to break up This is a dangerous mistake that places a dark cloud over relationships long after a heated argument has passed, and it’s often done because of feeling insecure and the fear that he will break up with you, so you want to show that you can do it easily and before he does. But the most important part of a mature relationship is remaining committed in the lowest of times. By threatening to break up, even if you’re saying it out of frustration and don’t really mean it, you’re abandoning your partner in a cruel and cowardly way. Threatening to break up is a selfish power play that benefits neither person. Avoid playing that card at all costs. When emotions have cooled, you’ll be so glad you did. Not enjoying your new relationship When looking more closely at new relationships, it’s clear there are many different things that you should try to avoid doing. However, it’s also important that you don’t miss out on the opportunity to have fun with your new partner. The start of a new relationship is full of happy, meaningful, and memorable moments and experiences that you create with your partner while you’re both getting to learn more about each other. In fact, it’s been shown that engaging in different kinds of fun and enjoyable activities with your partner can bring you closer as a couple, helps to improve your conflict resolution skills, and is associated with an increased level of relationship satisfaction. So when you place an emphasis on enjoying these kinds of firsts together, it’s actually a key step toward building a first-rate and longlasting relationship with one another.
Having a break up or a failed relationship is not the end of the world and you shouldn’t let it ruin a new one. We all go through-not only one-but even more than one failed relationship until we finally meet our life partner. Don’t let something like this make you feel down and at the same time you should be smart to learn from your previous mistakes. All it takes is for you to sit back, remember what you did wrong before and then take your decision not to repeat it again. Enjoy your new relationship and let the past remain in the past.

Do you think well about every step you take in your life? I think that no sane person wouldn’t think deeply about every step in his life. It is his own life, nothing could be more important than that to think about. So yes of course I do think about every step. Do you have friends in the acting field? Yes of course I do have friends from the field. Do you think it’s a logical thing to have a group of your own in any work that you do? And do you have such a group? It’s not a bad thing that you have your own group in a work that you do. But what’s important is that no favoritism would be present. After working in the acting field, what changed in the way you used to think about that field? That like any other working field, the acting field is sadly ruled by nepotism & connections, except may be for 10% of people who are being fair. What is your ambition in the acting field? My ambition is to play roles with a purpose and have value and holds a message that would benefit the audience. Do you think its right that some actors would agree to do any role at the start of their acting career just for the sake to be present & known in the field?
Yes, the way things go in the acting field in Egypt it is a must that you do such roles in the beginning. But once the actor is known, he should stop this & start doing only the roles that he wants and that is beneficial and have value. Do you think that your movie ‘El Bar El Tany’ was successful for both the audience & the critics? It is enough for me that critics said that this movie is among the most important 100 movies in the Egyptian cinema, & since it was that first movie I ever did so I am very proud of that. Do you really believe that the art of acting holds a message? Of course it holds a very important and valuable message, especially for those who appreciate it. Acting & movies could actually change the mindset & thinking of people. Did anything change in Mohamed Ali as a person after working in acting? No nothing changed at all. I am still the same person as I was before I started acting. You worked hard a lot in your life. What did you learn & what was the benefit of that in your personality? What I learned is that there is nothing better than honesty, justice & freedom. What is the percentage of the existence of challenge in your work?
LOUNGE 23
Challenge actually makes 100% of my work. Are you married? Yes I am married & have kids. Do you believe that women should work & have their own career? Of course I believe in that. I also believe that she have a very important role in the community, just as important as the role of men. Do you believe in luck? I could say that I believe in getting chances, but not just being lucky. Did you encounter love in your life? Of course I did. Being a human being it is an inevitable thing that I did encounter love in my life. What is the secret of you always saying that you are a “Sha’abi” person, & a very simple man? Because it’s the truth, it’s not something that I was hiding & then surprised people with. I was living in “El Agouza” & it’s a “Sha’abi” place, not a luxury one, & it’s not something that I am ashamed of at all. I always like that people be proud of their origins. If for example your father is rich it’s not a problem, you should only work harder & build yourself to even make something bigger than what your father have. Do you find the time for both your work as an actor & your construction business? Yes of course I have the time for both things, in addition to a third thing as well. What is the importance of sports for you as an actor? Sports are important to me just because I am an actor. My father was the world champion in Bodybuilding, so I was raised in a house that cares about sports & I became addicted to it. The movie ‘El Bar El Tany’ didn’t make a profit that would cover the cost of its production. Did that make you think in a different way for the future? This didn’t cause me any problem. The only thing it caused is that I didn’t think of production again. But I am very satisfied with the movie as it holds an important message & my aim wasn’t to get a profit out of it. There are rumors that you are thinking of leaving Egypt. How true is that? I don’t see that it is something wrong if I think of that. Leaving or staying in the country is something personal and only concerns me. I don’t think that it is anybody else’s business whether I stay or leave. Why did you sell your villa? I think that when someone sells something it’s because he no longer needs it. So I sold my villa because I don’t want it anymore. Why are you liquidating your construction company? Is this because it is losing? Yes that true, because the floatation of the Egyptian pound caused the company a huge amount of loss. Do you ever think about immigration? Yes I thought about it a lot & considered immigrating. What are the principles that you believe in the most? I believe in God & that as long as you fear & love God then you will find that you are going in the right way & your path will be an easy one. What is your best proverb that you live by? It’s not a proverb, but it’s God’s words which translate to “You will be given according to your intentions, whether good or bad”.

What is the last book you read? Well, I don’t read at all. I know that it’s not a good thing, but unfortunately I don’t like reading. I like to hear stories but I rarely read. Why you are not present in artistic festivals & parties? With all due respect, but I don’t feel that they have a good image here so that’s why I don’t like attending them. What is the role that you dream of portraying? I dream of portraying a character of a pharaoh, but I want it to be made in the American cinematic way. If you are able to go back in time, what is the thing that you would like to do once again? If I go back in time I would repeat my life exactly the same way, no change at all. Do you fear the future? No I don’t at all, & I always plan for the future. It’s all fate & in the hands of God, so there is no need to be afraid of the future.

n actor who was able in no time to put himself in a distinguished position as one of the most promising talents of his generation, Amira Tharwat talks to actor Mohamed Farrag to tell us more about the reason behind the delay of his most anticipated TV serial Aho Dah Ely Sar, the role of his dreams, football and his big comeback to the cinema along with Ahmed Ezz.
LOUNGE 26
Why was ‘Aho Dah Ely Sar’ series postponed to next Ramadan? The timings of when the series will be aired & on which channel is not something that I control; it’s in the hands of the producers and the channels. Every channel has a certain amount of series. So we as actors don’t interfere in this subject, & as for myself I don’t really know the reason or the details. What is the series you liked the most last Ramadan? I liked ‘Kalabsh’ a lot, I loved this year’s experience, it was even better than last year & this means that people liked it a lot. I also liked ‘El Rehla’ & ‘ABO Omar El Masry’, & I watched Adel Emam’s series after Ramadan & I liked it too. And out of the series that was aired last Ramadan, what is the role that you wish you could have done? The role of Haitham Ahmed Zaki that he did opposite Amir Karara, I loved the character so much and would have loved to do it. The role of Basel Khayat in ‘El Rehla’ series & the role of Khaled Kamal in ‘Layaly Euginie’. You did different kind of roles, like the drug addict & the musician. What is the role that you still wish to do? Well, when I was young I always used to say that I want to do the role of a policeman. I love the historical characters, like ‘Khaled Ebn El Waleed’, ‘Tarek Ebn Zyad’, ‘Mosaab Ebn Omer’ & a lot of other characters in the Islamic history. These are the characters that I would really love to do now, I never did anything like that & I hope I would get the chance to do it. What kind of student you were during the time of school? I was a very naughty student & I didn’t like to do anything that I didn’t like, like I only studied the subjects that I liked. I didn’t attend regularly & miss a lot of classes. I always liked to do activities but I didn’t like to study, I liked art, theatre & music. In an interview with Mona El Shazly you said that when you were given the choice between being the cat or the mouse you chose the mouse, why? The question wasn’t like that. I was telling her that when Tamer Mohsen & Waheed Hamed offered me a role, it was that of ‘Hamada El Far’ & not ‘Abbas El Ott’ which was performed by Mahmoud Hemeda. But in the program she was asking me in general which you would prefer, to be a cat or a mouse. So I told her that I would choose the mouse because I feel it has more freedom than the cat & is smart & always puts the cat in trouble. What are the characteristics of your dream girl? I never had certain characteristics in my mind, the most important thing is to be kind hearted & that both of us would be connected both emotionally & mentally. But as for the details of her appearance like being white, black, short, tall, thin or not, all these things doesn’t really matter that much to me. I just always wanted that someone would be taking this place, & it stayed empty for a very long time in life. But I always search for what’s inside & not the physical appearance, that’s what matters the most to me.
LOUNGE 27
You mentioned before that you are a moody person; did this ever made you lose whether on the personal or practical level? I try not to make it cause any loses, because I am really moody & can’t work in an atmosphere that isn’t so encouraging because this makes me even more moody & not in sync with the character that I am doing. On the personal level it sure happens that I am not in a good mood so I try as much as possible to be away from people or be with people who can understand the state that I am in at that time & usually there aren’t a lot of people who can understand that, so I try to be by myself. How was your radio experience with Nelly Karim in the radio series ‘Eaterafat Khokha’, and what is the difference between doing TV series & a radio series? It was a very good & enjoyable experience but unfortunately I didn’t get to meet her lot, just a couple of times. Both of us were still shooting our TV series so we couldn’t match our times to be together at the same time, & last Ramadan time was too tight. But I enjoyed the whole experience with all the cast & crew. The difference between a TV series & the radio series is that for the TV series you both watch & listen but with the radio you only listen. So the actor has to make the people who are listening able to imagine as if they are watching. The actor of course has to do extra effort in order to achieve this, & I really enjoy doing radio series & standing in front of the microphone. Before the world cup you mentioned that our national team players will be up to the responsibility & will kill themselves in order to make the people happy, is your opinion still the same? No, I have a totally different opinion now. Of course I supported them all the way, & we all did, but I am not going to give any compliments now as it was clear in front of everyone how disappointing it was. Nothing was added to our credit at all, but success is not achieved from the first time & hopefully they will do better next time & learn from their mistakes. But of course I will always support our national football team. Why don’t we see you in any movies? I admit that I don’t do a lot of movies, may be only a movie every two or three years. But that’s out of my hands, as I don’t want to do just anything, even in the series as well. I have to do a character that I am convinced with & is different & unique. I don’t like to do any role that I get offered just for the sake to exist in the cinema so I don’t accept a lot of roles that are offered to me. But recently I was offered good scenarios & soon I will start shooting a movie that I believe will be a very important one for me & for everyone participating in it, it is written & directed by Sherif Arafa. What are you working on? The movie that I just mentioned, that is written & directed by Sherif Arafa & we will start shooting soon. The cast includes Ahmed Ezz, Hend Sabry, Ahmed Rizk, Ahmed Salah Hosny, Mahmoud Hafez, Mohamed El Sharnouby & Ahmed Falawkas.

Ryan Gosling
in First Man o
scar nominee Ryan Gosling has built a successful career for himself, appearing in a variety of genres and winning praise for his work in both comedy and drama. Here, he works again with La La Land’s Damien Chazelle to portray Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the surface of the Moon. He talks playing more sides to a hero who is also a mystery to many, teaming up for a second time with Chazelle…
How was it to play Neil Armstrong? It was truly an honor to portray Neil in this film. As soon as I learned what the moon was I learned that Neil Armstrong walked on it. He has been synonymous with the moon my whole life but, like the moon, I knew very little about him. The more I learned, the more my admiration and respect for him grew. Did you go in depth to find out things that were not widely known? His professionalism and reserved demeanor made him appear to many as unknowable. It also made him easy to cloak in mythologies and project onto. With the help of his sons and late ex-wife Janet Armstrong; along with his sister, June; and many of his friends and colleagues, we attempted to peel back the layers of the man behind the myth. Did you relate to it on a family level, as a father? Of course, but I think the phrase “still waters run deep,” really applies well to Neil. He was an extremely layered person of great depth and there were many levels to him that I admired but did not relate to as easily. This is a great story. Why do you think it’s still relevant to audiences today? When Neil was asked what he thought the future of space exploration would uncover he said, “I think it will uncover our eyes and allow us to see things that maybe we should have seen all along but just haven’t been able to until now.” I imagine that is as relevant now as when he said it. Do you think the world needs it right now? I think there’s always something to be learned from a life well lived. When Damien asked you to do the film, what did you think? There wasn’t a script at that point but Damien’s vision was so clear that when he was finished telling me the story, I felt like I had just seen the movie.
LOUNGE 30
What is it like to work with Damien again? I love working with Damien. He has an extraordinary ability to work on a massive technical scale but still maintain a very small and intimate working atmosphere for his cast and crew. His films are an adventure for his collaborators and the audience. What makes the movie suspenseful, even though we know the mission was a success? What makes it suspenseful is its personal perspective. It’s very hard to understand just how dangerous and harrowing these missions really were and this film puts the audience in the cockpit and allows them to experience it as though they are the ones being launched into space and landing on the moon. There was a political contest between superpowers in the space race. Is that something that is addressed in the movie? Yes, it is addressed but those are the things we already know about the space race. What we don’t know are the personal stories of people who dedicated, and in many cases lost, their lives trying to make the impossible task of putting a human being on the moon possible. Neil was a perfect person to focus on in order to better understand that because he and his wife Janet experienced an extraordinary amount of loss both before and during these missions. Neil was ultimately the first person to see that impossible task become a reality. You are working with almost the same team as La La Land. How strange was it to be part of two different projects with the same people? This film was incredibly challenging and we needed all hands on deck. La La Land was great preparation for all of us. Were you a space fan as a child? Not really. Like anyone else, I was overwhelmed by the mystery of it all. I
also was six when the Challenger disaster happened so even though I don’t have a memory of that specifically, I remember there being a sense of sadness around the idea of human space flight. We’re now talking about going to Mars. Do you think it’s a good idea? Would you go? Oh, no! But it was an interesting time to be at NASA because they seemed to be preparing a Rover that could function on both Mars and the Moon. I’m not the person to ask where we should or shouldn’t go though. I’ll leave that to wiser people then me. Ask Buzz Aldrin, he’s the one you want to talk to about Mars. How was working with Claire Foy as Janet? I was so lucky to work with Claire on this. You can’t really know what happened behind closed doors, but we had to imagine it. Claire was constantly exploring new ways to communicate not only the complex dynamics inherent in any marriage, but also the experience of someone living something so singular that it’s hard to even imagine, let alone relate to. Somehow Claire managed to do that and the film benefited from it tremendously. Was it a challenge to portray a man of a different time? Neil was definitely a man of his time but within that he was a very reserved, deeply introspective and private person. The most challenging thing for me was to honor those qualities which were so inherent to his persona but still find a way to include the audience in what his emotional state may have been over the period of time the film takes place. Did you research the theories that we never went to the moon? Yes I have. They’re not as convincing as the evidence that we did.

CLAIRE FOY IS JANET ARMSTRONG IN FIRST MAN Claire Foy stars as Janet, the wife of astronaut Neil Armstrong in Damien Chazelle’s First Man, which opened the 2018 Venice Film Festival to glowing critical acclaim. Having your film open the Venice Film Festival has to be a special moment… It’s been amazing. It’s the most beautiful festival I could ever have imagined. It’s such an amazing place and it felt really special. It’s a once in a lifetime thing and I don’t expect to come back. Did you watch the film for the first time in Venice? No, I’d seen an earlier cut so when I watched it in Venice I was surprised and it was like ‘oh that’s it!’ I’m glad that I’d seen it before because it was incredibly emotional watching it and I’m glad I managed to hold it together. What was it like watching it with that huge audience at Venice? I thought it might be more exposing and that I would be aware of people watching us while I was watching us on screen and it would be quite a weird out of body kind of thing (laughs). But actually it’s a testament to the power of Damien’s film that I was engrossed – I never even thought about going to the
LOUNGE 32
toilet, which obviously is a big deal (laughs). I sat there and I was engrossed. I marvel at the film – and I marvel at his talent and I’m just so surprised that I’m in it. I think it’s such a unique thing that he has done and he is so clever. How did you approach playing Janet Armstrong? Janet was Neil’s wife and her story isn’t particularly known but she is obviously integral to his story and his domestic life. The usual story we get told is the astronaut’s story – the story of the hero, the story of manned space exploration. So, like most people, I’d never really thought about the family I suppose. And so I saw Janet as the leader of that family and I think it’s very easy in that set up, in a 1960s American house, to think that a man would be leading the household – he is the breadwinner, the one who goes to work - but it’s Janet who is the one who is keeping it together. So I did lots of research but unfortunately I never got to meet her and sadly she passed away quite recently. I would have loved to have met her – not to probe her or anything but just to sit in a room with her because I really think she was very interesting and an amazing woman. She experienced something so singular, something that so few people experience, and I have
a huge amount of admiration for her and the incredible job she has done bringing up her boys because they are incredible people. Did you meet Janet and Neil’s sons? Yes, Eric and Mark. There was a certain amount of trepidation before I met them. You sort of feel that they might think ‘who are you coming in and telling the story of my mother? You are not my mother.’ But they were just so lovely with me. I think it helped that I’m a mother myself and I wasn’t there to say ‘how did this feel’ and ‘how did that feel?’ I didn’t want to do any of that. I just wanted to know some of their memories of their Mum and Dad. And they just have such positive, lovely things to say about them. So they are amazing and they were very, very nice to me. We had chats and they were able to give me an insight into what daily life was like. And they speak so fondly of their Mum and Dad it’s really beautiful. And did you enjoy working with Ryan Gosling? I hated it! (laughs). No, I loved it. He is a genius – a very, very talented man. He is incredibly bright, incredibly open to the process of filmmaking and he loves collaborating and he loves to know what people are thinking. And it’s so interesting watching him and Damien together and how
they would really excite each other with an idea and just do it – like there was no kind of second-guessing it was ‘that’s great, let’s do that!’ I loved it. I was given so much freedom. And I felt very, very safe with Ryan. He is such a lovely person and so funny. He is what he seems which is a really nice man. It’s very much a story about loss isn’t it? And in your film Neil carries the grief of losing his daughter all the way to the moon. Yes. Janet and Neil lost their daughter when she was very young. And people have said to me ‘do you think that’s why Neil went to the moon? Is that what really happened? Do you think that is true?’ But nobody knows and Neil never spoke about anything but his silence after Karen’s death is a sign itself that obviously it was something that was too painful to deal with. And people who have been into space say that it is the most spiritual experience because you look down at the Earth and you think ‘my God, we’re so small but we are so beautiful.’ And how can that not make you think about the person that you loved most? So it’s about loss and it’s about how he experiences loss and you can see how it ricochets through the whole family and you can see how some people are dealing with it and some people aren’t. And the Armstrongs are also losing friends from NASA – like Ed White (Jason Clarke) - who died in the Apollo 1 accident. When Janet married Neil he was a pilot and he had already been to war and when you live in that world, I think he had to deal with losing friends, with life going just like that (clicks fingers). And he had to live with the fact when you worked in that job with NASA you could get in an airplane and one malfunction and that’s it for you. And that was the fascinating thing about Neil that somehow he steered a very odd course through all that death and disaster and pain. I think at some point Neil had to cut himself off from it and see just the science, the engineering and the things he was doing whereas Janet had to deal with this genuine fear that the man she loved, the father of her children, the man who paid for everything around her, at any moment could be gone. I think very early on she was so afraid of the knock on the door that she made sure that she would be OK. She knew she had to take care of herself and especially after their daughter Karen died, she knew that if Neil went she would have to bring those two boys up and support them. I think she is very admirable because living like that is very unusual to say the least.
You were joining Damien and Ryan after they had worked together so successfully on La La Land. They clearly have a bond so what was it like for you working with them? They really do have a bond. They decided to do First Man together before they decided to do La La Land. Ryan is also a director and he is brimming with ideas and so much of it is so relevant and informs the story and makes the film more, in a way, and Damien loves it – he wants those ideas because he is so collaborative. So they are a really good fit with each other; they encourage each other and understand each other and always want what is best for the film. Their egos don’t come into it, which is pretty amazing. I felt very, very lucky to be working with them. I loved it. Do you think that people have taken the moon landing for granted and that this film will change people’s perceptions of it? I don’t think Damien wanted to change people’s view of it. But in the film when Neil steps on to the moon it’s not ‘hurray!’ it’s a deeply sad thing in a way. It’s survivors’ guilt because it is weighted with the deaths of so many people and it’s very difficult to not be awed by it. I was watching it and I watched the moon landing and I just saw the layers and layers of what it means to be human and what it meant to be in that place looking back at our planet. Had you seen all of Damien’s earlier films? Yes, I’d seen them all. I remember when Whiplash came out and everyone saying ‘this is completely different’ and then La La Land was such a brave and bold thing to do. No one would ever think of making a movie like that and now he has changed the landscape of cinema in a way because people know that there is an appetite for musicals with a story. I think he’s a star because everyone is so fascinated by this young man who has this ability to be an incredibly mature filmmaker. What’s he like on set? He’s two different people (laughs) but he’s always so personable. When he’s person to person he is so gracious and interested in everybody and makes everyone feel at ease. He’s not arrogant or over confident, he’s just a lovely person. He doesn’t think he is the main event even though a lot of the time he is (laughs). But then on set – and he is incredibly personable on set as well – he is completely in control, completely in charge and he has authority over all of it. He is one of the most assured filmmakers I’ve ever worked with. He is incredible and knows exactly what he wants and he won’t stop until he gets it.

Mixed chemicals in beauty products may harm women’s hormones
As we go about our daily lives, we are exposed to many different chemicals that could have negative effects on our hormones. These hormonal changes have been linked to several adverse health outcomes such as breast cancer and cardiovascular disease. Therefore, understanding chemicals that influence hormone levels is important for public health -- and particularly for women’s health -- since their exposure to these chemicals is often higher due to their presence in beauty and personal care products.
Witnessing violence in high school as bad as being bullied
Students who witness violence in school at age 13 are at later risk of psycho-social and academic impairment at age 15, according to a new longitudinal study. In their study, the researchers examined different forms of violence. Witnessing major violence was associated with later drug use and delinquency. The effect was the same for hidden or veiled violence.
Stress over fussy eating prompts parents to pressure or reward at mealtime
Although fussy eating is developmentally normal and transient phase for most children, the behavior can be stressful for parents. These practices can reinforce fussy eating, increase preferences for unhealthy foods, and lead to excessive weight gain. The researchers suggests that health professionals tasked with advising parents of fussy eaters might consider providing reassurance, education, and alternative behavioral strategies to support children’s exposure to a wide variety of healthy foods.

Safety First Tetra Pak is committed to protecting what’s good in food, but how much do people really know about food protection and what can be done to ensure we protect ourselves against foodborne diseases?
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), the majority of us will experience foodborne disease at some point in our lives . Most of us have experienced food poisoning because of poor food standards at least once, but did you know 1 in 10 people fall ill every year from contaminated food with 420,000 fatalities each year? You may be also shocked to learn, children under five are particularly susceptible to illnesses triggered as a result of ingesting food with harmful bacteria, toxins and chemicals. The elderly is also at high risk of getting seriously ill from bacteria and parasites in food. How does food contamination happen? In a globalised world, food is susceptible to contamination at any point during production, distribution and preparation. The food supply chain is complicated and the food we consume is taken through many stages known as the food production chain. Food safety is a combined effort. Everyone has a part to play in keeping foods safe; governments, food manufactures and yes, even you! The good news? Foodborne diseases are easily preventable. The clue is in the packaging Food packaging is a vital part of keeping our food in good condition. Every day, across the world, food is being transported across countries and even continents to your shopping trolley. That is a long way, so how is food – especially fresh produce – kept safe in transit? Whether it is a carton, bottle, or jar; outer packaging protects food from outside contaminants while also protecting the shape and texture of the food and beverage in addition to the nutritional value of what is inside. It has developed a range of packages using innovative technology to protect the nutritional value and taste while the cartons are in transit, in your fridge or in your child’s lunchbox. The cartons, made from multiple layers for maximum protection and seal in the goodness helping to preserve the vitamins inside eliminating the need for preservatives or additives. While the quality and safety of food must be secured by everyone involved in the complex ecosystem, from food production to consumption, packaging is an essential medium for preserving food quality, minimising food wastage and reducing preservatives used in food. The packaging serves the important function of containing the food, protecting against chemical and physical damage whilst providing information essential to consumers and marketers via food labels. So, what can I do? Packaging can protect your food throughout the chain, but you have a duty of care once food reaches your kitchen. Food storage and preparation, the last step in the food production chain, is the part where you must step and protect your food. Here is a fool-proof guide to food safety in the home.
1. Pick proper packages As packaging solution experts, we can tell you that packaging is vital to ensuring the freshness of your food. While hunting for items at the grocery store, check that the packaging has not been damaged in any way or is bent out of shape as this could mean that the safety of your food has been compromised. The best packaging is durable, prevents light and other outside factors to reach your food and most importantly, preserves your food and all its wholesome goodness. 2. Check the label Always check the label to find out whether your product should be refrigerated or kept in a cupboard at room temperature. Experts suggest you keep your refrigerator below 40°F and refrigerate perishable food within 2 hours to avoid contamination. 3. Defrost wisely Never thaw food on your kitchen counter, always thaw frozen food in your fridge. Bacteria will begin to grow and multiply in food left out to thaw once it reaches room temperature. 4. Keep it clean! This sounds like an obvious one, but make sure you wash your hands, your tools and your surfaces repeatedly during food preparation and cooking. Your food has not made thousands of miles only to pick up a few nasty germs on your kitchen counter. 5. Keep it separate Raw meat, poultry and fish should always be separated from each other and other food. This includes in the shopping trolley, in your fridge and when you are cooking. 6. Cook it thorough It is advisable to use a thermometer when cooking, to ensure your food is ready to eat. Another tip is to check if food is properly cooked is to make sure it is steaming hot all the way through. You should be looking for steam. A large dish may need to be checked in more than one place to ensure all parts are fully cooked.

The Biggest Fears
& How to Overcome Them
w
hen we were kids the biggest things that could possibly make us afraid were horror movies or the Boogeyman. When we grew older we started to have bigger fears but now they are not as concrete as they were. It became the fear of losing your loved ones, the fear of change or the fear of illness. This month as we celebrate Halloween Amira Tharwat brought you our biggest 10 fears as adults and how to deal with them.
1 2
The fear of being judged Make sure to have self esteem and believe in yourself, know your worth, make your own standards and be your own judge.
The fear of losing your loved ones Befriend yourself more and know that you are an entity on its own, we all have our loved ones that we can’t imagine carrying on without them but it is a fact that eventually you are able to function on your own and no body is immortal in this life so don’t make your happiness based on someone else’s existence.
3 4 5
The fear of rejection Have self confidence and keep reminding yourself of the good traits you possess and the number of praise you received from people. Even if someone rejected you there are still billions out there who deserve a chance. The fear of failure If you are afraid of failure know that you are about to do something great. People who fear failure are those who are active and taking vital decisions in their life to make it better, not standing still. Even if you failed this time, you will gain experience for the next try. The fear of sickness As we are all mortal then we know for a fact that no matter how healthy we are, we will be subject to illness sooner or later. All you can do is eat healthy, don’t smoke and get the best out of your journey in life don’t make this fear hold you from enjoying it to the max.

The fear of leaving your comfort zone Well you need to talk to the one who fears failure then! The place you are in is the best because you haven’t seen anything yet, get out of your shell and be vulnerable. It is ok to get outside, see the world and return back to your shell anytime it is not going anywhere, you are missing a lot. The fear of loneliness Who doesn’t fear it but if you are in good terms with yourself, you will see your relationship with others from a totally different perspective. Learn how to love yourself, know how to make your mood better on your own, how to chill, how to reward yourself and most importantly how to forgive yourself and make peace with it. The fear of death Since it is the only truth we know, accept it as a fact instead of running from it, but don’t make it hold you back from living. Live with every breath you have and get the best out of life and leave a mark before leaving it. The fear of regret What is done is done and you can never really do anything about it except learning from it. So instead of focusing on regression focus on the lessons learnt from your previous mistakes.
10
The fear of aging Aging is merely a sign of being alive for too long. That should be scary only if you haven’t lived the life you’ve wanted. It would be scary only if you lived it imprisoning yourself in your comfort zone. So in order not to fear aging make sure to live the life you wanted without the fear of failure, rejection, loneliness or even death.
