This camp is great for both beginners and experienced young players. All participants will learn cool new strategies at the appropriate level from a renowned Chess Scholars coach. We will travel across the globe to learn about the cuisine and traditions of different countries and master how to cook safely while slicing, dicing, chopping, baking, zesting, mixing, and more!
Manners Matter
Ages 5-10
In this class you will learn proper classroom, table, and even public manners. We will address proper ways to speak to our parents and teachers. Also, we will be working on table etiquette and will be receiving our very own place setting to take home to practice. This is a much-needed skill in our community today. Valen-Slime: A Stretchy-Thinking Slime Lab
Ages 5-12
Have the slime of your life making Valentine’s Day-themed slime! Customize your slime in the concoction center to smell like gourmet chocolates, fresh-cut roses, or chocolate-covered strawberries. Then color it to be vibrant with the colors known for Cupid’s day. Speaking of Cupid, stop his arrow from coming your way by using your batch of slime to capture him in the act when we play a slimy Valentine game! Kids take their slime home. Bonus: Attendees will receive a life coaching lesson on greed, gratitude, love, and removing winter worries. This is a dropyour-child-off class.
Magic Class
Ages 5-12
Children are guaranteed to have fun as they learn a collection of fascinating and mesmerizing tricks! Amaze family and friends with tricks that involve cards, ropes, coins, mind-reading and more. While the tricks may appear difficult, kids will discover they are quick to learn and easy to perform. Note: All materials are provided and each child receives a magic kit to take home. Children are grouped by age and always learn tricks that are age appropriate. New tricks are taught each session, so you can sign up again.
Little Vet School Dogs/Cats
Ages 5-12
After “adopting” their very own plush puppy, students will role play the key responsibilities of a veterinarian, including how to properly perform a nose-to-tail exam. These future veterinarians will learn how to sew stitches, remove ticks, make healthy treats, and vaccinate their dog. Instructor: Little Medical School Staff

Come enjoy games, sports, music, movies, dancing, food and more! This is a great opportunity to hang out with old friends and meet new kids from other schools. Concessions will be available for an additional fee. Drop-ins also are permitted.
Horsemanship for Kids
Ages 9-17
Join in the fun with beginning riding lessons! For more than 50 years, Dunham Woods Farm in Elgin has been a superior equestrian facility dedicated to providing the best lesson and horse care instruction available. You will explore the proper ways to groom, tack and handle horses. In the saddle, you will learn the basics of riding at the walk and trot. Lessons will be held in our indoor arena during inclement weather. Make-up classes are hosted at the end of the six weeks. First day of class is orientation and groundwork. Riders should wear jeans or Jodhpur pants and hard-soled riding or hiking boots with a small, low heel. Must have an approved riding helmet or bicycle helmet to ride. Broadway Programs
Explore the world of musical theatre through developmentally appropriate, age-based instruction in singing, acting and dancing through songs and scenes from a musical! Building ensemble and technique in character work, voice, stylized movement, and storytelling will culminate with a cabaret-style showcase for friends and family. ACT 1: Acting Fundamentals
Grades K-3
For new or beginning acting students who want to participate in the next play or musical, Beginning Acting covers the fundamentals of acting through sensory, observation, and relaxation exercises and games. Learn and practice good basic stage movement, blocking, and bodywork to move and perform with purpose. Actors will gain the groundwork to take the stage confidently.
ACT 2: Acting in Performance
Grades 4-8
This class is for students who are currently in or planning to participate in a play or musical production. Through learning and applying techniques, this program works on setting each actor’s goals and addressing performance gaps through individualized coaching on techniques and methods for performance. The second half-hour will focus on the extension of the craft by digging deeper into character work, objectives, relationships and putting the words into action to develop a scene or monologue that engages the audience in the character’s world.
Grades 3+
We’re all in this together in Disney Channel’s smash hit musical phenomenon featuring the students of East High. It’s the first day after winter break at East High. The Jocks, Brainiacs, Thespians and Skater Dudes all find their cliques. Basketball team captain and resident jock, Troy, discovers that the brainy Gabriella, a girl he met singing karaoke on his ski trip, has just enrolled at East High. The couple cause an upheaval when they decide to audition for the high school musical. Although many students resent the threat posed to the “status quo,” Troy and Gabriella’s alliance might just open the door for others to shine, as well. If double cast, casts will be divided by age. Bookworm Wednesdays
Ages 2-5
Each monthly session will have participants listening to an exciting nature-themed story followed by a simple craft or short hike outside so dress for the weather. Each registered child will receive a plush reading buddy to take home at the end of each session. Adults must attend with their child, but do not need to register.
Cave Hike
All Ages
Join us on a 1-mile round trip hike to see the only cave in the Chicagoland region! Along the way, we will stop to point out areas of interest and signs of the season. Learn what makes our cave so unique and even take a piece of geologic history home with you. Dress for the weather—these hikes go snow or shine!
Animal Feeding Time!
All Ages
Engage with some of our animal ambassadors as an assistant animal caretaker! Participants will learn fun facts about the species we care for and personal background information that makes each one unique. Fee is for a group of up to six people, with one adult in attendance.
Family BINGO Night
Ages 6+
Join us for an evening of games and laughter as we play this classic game for prizes! Each person will receive a BINGO card, snacks, and a drink! All children must be accompanied by a registered adult.
Chill with Me
Ages 2-5, with an Adult
Join us at Red Oak where you and your early learner will discover how “cool” winter can be! Each meeting will have you discovering a special part of winter, from how animals survive to how snow is made and more. Dress to go outside each meeting. Adults do not need to register, but must accompany their child.
Holiday Party with the Animals
All Ages, with an Adult
Come show the animal ambassadors at Red Oak the holiday spirit by decorating, interacting, and having fun right next to them! Self-guided craft stations will be set up for you to create decorations for our Wildlife Room, including a few special enrichment-style treats to be gifted to these incredible animals for all their hard work. Adults do not need to register, but must accompany their participant.
Hidden Holiday Tree
All Ages
Take a hike outside to explore the wonders of winter while you search for our hidden tree decorated for the holidays. When you find it, take a picture, and post it to Red Oak Nature Center’s Facebook page!
Frosty Fest - Ticketed Event
All Ages
Just because the holidays are over does not mean you can’t celebrate winter! Families are welcome to join us at Red Oak for our 1st Frosty Fest where you can go on a snowman scavenger hunt on our snowflake trail, build your own Frosty friend, and enjoy seasonal snacks while warming up by the fire. Everyone attending must purchase a ticket for entry.
