Proud Sponsors of Education Life Kingswood has an ethos of inclusivity and very much focuses on how to inspire each individual pupil to achieve his or her very best Education should be a life-changing experience, so my philosophy has always been to engage pupils in such a way that they are inspired to learn and, when they leave school, they have the all-round qualities and qualifications to both fulfil their future ambitions as well as make a real difference in their chosen field. This can only be achieved by offering the right breadth of opportunities and ensuring our pupils’ educational experience is effectively managed. A recent comment by the Independent Schools’ Inspectorate stated, ‘Kingswood pupils’ personal development is outstanding and they leave school mature and confident, with strong leadership qualities and a genuine concern for others’. Our Christian foundation and values sit at the very heart of the education we provide. As we plan for the future of the School and seek to secure its continued prosperity, we also endeavour to maintain those values which have made Kingswood a highly successful school over many generations. Striving purposefully for all-round excellence remains our central aim and in doing this we put great emphasis of the quality of relationships, encourage a sense of service and seek to create an atmosphere of tolerance, understanding and inclusion.

SECONDARY EDUCATION
As your child prepares to take the big step into secondary education, the last year of primary school is overshadowed by one big question; how to choose the perfect school for your little one. While exam results and Ofsted reports can offer a clear cut view of a school, it’s important to use a variety of methods to really understand what it has to offer. Ask around and find out about it’s reputation and what other parents think; browse the school’s website and take every opportunity you can to visit and take a look inside. It’ll all be worth it when your child comes home from their first day with a smile on their face.

Writhlington School
...a remarkable school for all children. Writhlington’s philosophy is that every child is unique and that there are no barriers to a child achieving their full potential. Every member of the school community works to develop each child into a confident, successful young person ready to take on the challenges of the 21st Century. As commented in the school’s Ofsted Report, pupils “flourish” at Writhlington. When children join the school it is the beginning of a long term partnership leading to Sixth Form study, university, training and employment.
Mark Everett says: “I believe Writhlington is simply remarkable in the way we nurture every child and I warmly welcome you to come and see for yourself. The school’s facilities and resources are exceptional.
The school has the largest and most successful Sixth Form in the local community and students follow degree courses at prestigious universities across the UK, including: UCL, York, Birmingham, Exeter, LSE, Durham, Bath, Manchester, Warwick, Sheffield, Leeds and Cardiff.
Writhlington looks forward to welcoming children and their parents at the forthcoming Open Evening on Thursday 26 September 2013. Doors will be open at 6pm and there will be an opportunity to tour the site, meet current students and talk to staff and parents.
However, academic achievement is only part of the Writhlington success story. Headteacher,

St Gregory’s Catholic College & St Mark’s School
In September 2013, history will be made in Bath and North East Somerset with the opening of the New Sixth, the joint post-16 provision of St Gregory’s and St Mark’s. This Council-funded project is the most significant educational development in the area for many years and will give to many parents and students what they have consistently asked for: a high-quality school sixth form provision in the state sector with a Christian foundation. The New Sixth, which will open on the site across from St Gregory’s in Odd Down, will provide state of the art study and support facilities for sixth form students. The sixth form will be devoted to academic excellence and will continue the strong traditions of pastoral care which is such a feature of St Gregory’s and St Mark’s. Students from both schools will have equal access to places in the sixth form with places also available for external students who wish to continue their education in this uniquely supportive and stimulating environment. The Open Evening for The New Sixth is on Thursday 17 October. St Gregory’s and St Mark’s have been working closely together in a collaboration or ‘soft’ federation, known as the Bath Christian Federation, since 2010. GCSE students at both schools have benefited from being able to follow specialist courses at the other school and developed joint enrichment activities such as Duke of Edinburgh, residential trips, and links with local churches and charities. St Gregory’s has a long tradition of academic excellence, combined with outstanding pastoral care and a vibrant performing arts and enrichment programme. The most recent Ofsted inspection in July 2013 concluded ‘this is an outstanding

school’ and judged every aspect of the provision as Outstanding. St Gregory’s therefore becomes one of the very few schools judged as Outstanding in the new Ofsted framework. The Open Evening for St Gregory’s will take place on Thursday 26 September, with the Open Morning on Thursday 3 October. St Mark’s is an, ‘Outstanding Church of England School’ (SIAS) and rated ‘Good’ by Ofsted, June 2013. Their most recent Ofsted inspection recognised the very significant improvement at St Mark’s in recent years, commenting that ‘students are proud of their school and behaviour in and around the site are good,’ and that they feel safe in school, well cared for and part of the ‘school family.’ At capacity, St Mark’s School has around 500 places, well below the national average, making it an attractive option for parents looking for a small, yet distinctive school for their child. The individualism and distinctiveness that is created cannot be replicated in a larger institution. They are a distinctively small school that allows young people to flourish and develop, in an environment that is caring and supportive. The Open Evening for St Mark’s will take place on Thursday 19 September with Open Mornings on Friday 27 September and Friday 11 October. Both schools now have one Executive Headteacher, Raymond Friel, who is a National Leader of Education. The vision for the future comes from the schools’ common Christian values which place the dignity and well-being of each child at the heart of their work.

A level success 2013 Ralph Allen School maintains its excellent record in A-Level success and is in the top 250 schools in The Times top A-level results for 2013. Of the 298 entries 35% of grades were A* or A, bucking the national trend, and 84% of all grades were either A*, A, B or C. The overall pass rate is a very healthy 99%. Again there has been an increase in all areas as the school continues to strive for excellence, and many of our students are leaving us for the top Russell Group Universities. Ralph Allen School continues to excel in academic subjects such as English, Mathematics and Sciences where the proportion of A* and A grades is very high. Our students have once again aimed high and achieved the University places they wanted because of the extremely successful track record of the school in achieving results. Ralph Allen is going from strength to strength and continues to be a very popular choice for Bath parents. Students started using the

It will be the centre for our outstanding sixth form, forming an inspirational environment for study. The school is a Science College, a Dyson Partnership School and winners of the World Lego robotics championships in 2013. Following this summer’s excellent exam results, the school has proved yet again that it achieves excellence by the % of A* and A grades attained both at GCSE and ‘A’ Level. The school is welcoming new Principal Tim Withers, formerly of Stroud Girls High School, in September 2013. Mr Withers said, ‘I am very much looking forward to starting work in Ralph Allen School and building further on some very secure foundations. The building metaphor is in fact quite an appropriate one, since Ralph Allen School’s site is being transformed by existing building projects and those still to come.’

Norton Hill School
Once again in 2012/13 Norton Hill enjoys the prestige of being one of the highest performing schools in the country, where students of all abilities make outstanding progress. Results at Norton Hill have been significantly above the national average over recent years and continue to show an upward trend. At GCSE, the school is regularly in the top 10% of all schools nationally for ‘value-added’ between Years 7 & 11. A-level results are strong across the subject areas and again show an upward trend.
Students are actively involved in lessons at Norton Hill, developing the self-confidence and capacity to work independently that is crucial in later life as well as becoming one of the most important attributes sought after by future employers. A plethora of different teaching styles and approaches are employed to meet the needs of all learners. Norton Hill offers a broad and imaginative curriculum, including the Cambridge Pre-U course at Post 16 level which has been a resounding success in offering some of our highest achieving students the opportunity to attain even higher than the A* standard at A level.
The most recent OFSTED inspection (January 2013) again judged Norton Hill as a school with many outstanding features including ...as a parent I have behaviour, safety and attitudes been so impressed with the to learning of students. ... students learn in the real world through working in teams on projects designed to reflect real situations” What is a Studio School? Studio schools prepare young people aged 14–19 of all abilities with the skills, knowledge and experience they need to succeed in life. They offer a dynamic approach to learning by taking education out of the classroom. Instead students learn in the real world through working in teams on projects designed to reflect real situations, and through weekly work placements with businesses. This helps them to develop the employability skills they need to succeed in life and work. The Bath Studio School will be a member of a growing network of national studio schools, which are grasping the employability agenda in the UK to prepare our young people to take their place in the global, competitive economic environment.

Somervale School
2012/13 has been a remarkable year for Somervale. Examination results have hit record levels and the school was judged as ‘good’ in every category by OFSTED in January of this year.
As a small school, Somervale offers greater opportunities for pupils to be more involved and to lead activities. Its size allows all pupils to be recognised and valued. Visitors remark on how quiet and purposeful the school is: ‘Inspectors were very impressed with the behaviour of all students at all times during the inspection. They are courteous and polite to each other and to adults.’ OFSTED 2013. Pupils have the chance to work in the school’s media facilities, TV and radio, which are unrivalled in the area. They can work with the “Beautiful Futures Team” on a range of horticulture projects which have won regional acclaim.
In 2012 the Secretary of State for Schools, sent a letter to congratulate the school on its progress, placing Somervale as one of the top 100 most improved schools in the country. The school’s excellence in Arts education has been recognised with the award of the prestigious Artsmark Gold standard. The school’s attendance is now outstanding and the behaviour in and around school is exceptionally good: ‘students behave ...The Headteacher provides very well in lessons and The Midsomer Norton around the school. Badminton School
...at the forefront of girls’ education for well over 150 years
Badminton is a thriving day and boarding school for girls aged 3-18, which has remained at the forefront of girls’ education for well over 150 years. We are enormously proud of our heritage and traditions, but are certainly not constrained by them. The size of the campus and community gives a homely and vibrant feel to the School. This, coupled with our excellent pastoral care, leaves no scope for anonymity, but rather lends itself to strong mutually supportive relationships between girls as well as between girls and staff. Whilst the school retains a nationally outstanding academic record, its focus continues to be on nurturing the girls’ natural curiosity and fuelling their passion for learning. Therefore, we select girls on their personal strengths and all round ability, as well as their academic potential. It is a characteristic of Badminton girls that they are thoughtful
individuals, able to evaluate information and decide for themselves. This approach extends beyond their studies and into the day to day life of the School, where girls are given a wide range of opportunities to grow, develop and express themselves in an enormous range of activities. The Badminton community gives girls a chance to develop an understanding of the viewpoints of others and to think about contributing to the world around them. Girls leave Badminton ready to face the changing and challenging wider world and, when they do, they take with them a strong network of lifelong friends developed through a wealth of shared experiences. The best way to understand the School and to enjoy its atmosphere is to come and visit. Please do get in touch and we will look forward to welcoming you and your daughter.

St Brendan’s College
“
...a stepping stone to University
St Brendan’s has been providing education for the young people of Bristol and Bath since the 1970s. It is a state run Sixth Form College that specialises in A-levels and BTECs as well as GCSEs and the International Baccalaureate. It offers a massive choice of over 70 courses which because of its size (over 1600 students), can be taken in any combination, which is not always the case in smaller sixth forms. The teaching staff are experts in their fields and all facilities are specific for 16-18 education. The College nestles behind a wall on the A4 between Bristol and Bath and many people do not
even realise it is there, yet once through the gates you see that it is a modern, purpose built campus on huge grounds with fantastic facilities inside and out. Its location, right opposite the Brislington Park & Ride, makes it easy to get to from a large geographical area. St Brendan’s is holding Open Events in October for those who are interested in studying there in 2014: an Open Day on Saturday 12th October (10.30am-2pm) and Open Evenings on the 23rd and 24th (5-8pm). BATH ACADEMY
Offering you outstanding, bespoke academic education We believe that the success of our students in progressing to high ranking universities is due to the special level of personal attention and support that they receive during their studies at this independent tutorial college. Students are taught in small, supportive groups and given frequent examination practice. Normal, ordinary young people can achieve more than they believe, given encouragement and personalised support. As university entrance becomes increasingly competitive, students should not settle for second best – we support each individual in becoming the best they can be.
We are particularly proud of our high standards : • Small classes (Max. A Level class size = 6) • Personal attention and care throughout your course • Practice exams in every subject every week • Individual personal tutorials to give students feedback and guidance on their progress • Psychometric profiling for careers advice
