WELCOME
elcome
First and foremost I would like to wish all our readers and advertisers a great Christmas and a very happy new year from everyone here at Mid Somerset News and Media.
The festive season comes on the back of a sometimes tough year for many of us, but now is a time to put the daily struggles to the backs of our minds and reflect on what really matters our loved ones, friends and neighbours. It is a time to remember all that we do have, rather than all that we don’t - and everyone here has always been immensely proud to serve the communities of Mid Somerset. Of course having only started as editor in May, I am relatively new to the area, but the welcome I have received has been second to none and for that I am very grateful – this truly is a unique and wonderful place to live and work. That is why a personal highlight of the past year was the Heart of Somerset Community Awards
in September which recognised just some of those who have helped to make this small corner of the world so special. We are already planning for next year, so get ready to make your nominations for our 2014 awards. One thing is for certain, whatever the future holds for us all next year, we are in the right place to get through it together and come out fighting the other side – this is an area which is clearly on the up.
ideas. If there’s something you would like to see more from us next year, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. But for now, let’s forget all that and look forward to making the most of this special time of year.
Expect further big changes and improvements from us too, both in print and online, as we embrace the future with confidence. So this is a thank you too - for sticking with us, and also a request - for more news, views and

hopping in Mid Somerset
Across Mid Somerset there’s a diverse mix of businesses in which to find your Christmas gifts. Here’s our breakdown of where to find the designer labels, independent traders, shopping outlets and small boutiques.
Shepton Mallet This beautiful rural town is an unlikely fashion mecca with a huge variety of small and exclusive boutiques boasting everything from budget sportswear to high Italian fashion. The fashion quarter at Kilver Court is particularly popular with shoppers, with designer brands such as Jack Wills and Hawick Cashmere. There’s also a major retail park in the centre of town where you can find the likes of Argos and Tesco. Meanwhile the high street is always buzzing and there’s a major department store in Haskins.
Wells Wells has one of the busiest and most prosperous high streets in the south west where you can find ladies’ and men’s fashion, gadgets, sports equipments and all the wild and wacky gifts you’ll need to fill the children’s stockings.
Street
There’s also an abundance of arts of crafts shops selling handmade jewellery, high-quality fabrics, pottery and specialist books. And those in search of stocking up on tasty treats or a quick bite to eat will not be disappointed either, with Queen Street boasting some particularly delicious food and drink.
Glastonbury As well as the traditional mix of brand names and local business, Glastonbury boasts an array of unique and quirky independents for those looking for something a little bit different this Christmas. Wander through the streets and you will find a wonderful mix of shops selling bespoke furniture, books, charms, crystals and clothing, not to mention a range of therapists, clinics and individuals specialising in spirituality.
As well as an intriguing combination of boutiques providing a wide choice of accessories, clothing, toys and crafts, Street has some fantastic health and beauty businesses for those wishing to look and feel at their best this Christmas. With plenty of independent cafes, bars and restaurants dotted around, Street offers a lovely relaxed shopping experience.
Cheddar This charming village is a pleasure to stroll around at any time of the year, but particularly at Christmas. As well as the shops and businesses in the village centre be sure to explore the Lower Gorge and Tweentown. Cheddar should be your first point of call for locally sourced produce, where you’ll find the brilliant Somerset Farmers Markets offering up gorgeous local ales, cheeses, fruit, veg, chocolate and even Cheddar’s own spring water, extracted from within the Mendip cave network.
Clarks Village You can’t talk about shopping in Mid Somerset without mentioning Clarks Village. With 1,400 parking spaces and 12 coach bays, the shopping outlet serves not only Street but much of the surrounding area and beyond, with a multitude of stores offering a fantastic range of designer labels and famous brands, often at discount prices. If you’re looking to find all your presents in one place, then a day at Clarks Village could be just the ticket.

W MAKE-UP
inter Beauty
As we enter the Christmas season, thoughts turn to what we’ll be wearing this winter and how our beauty regimes will change. We’ve gathered our top tips for looking great this year. If you’re feeling the need for a new hair style this season why not consider the long bob, one of the hottest looks with celebrities right now. It’s a style that suits all face shapes and can be styled to be straight or wavy, giving you plenty of options. And if you’re thinking about changing your hair colour too, why not consider going red. Warming up all skin tones, it’s a favourite choice in the winter and with A-Listers like Scarlet Johansson and Drew Barrymore.
If you’ve spent the summer with beach ready tousled hair, now is the time for a polished new look. Invest in a good straitening treatment for that perfect sleek finish. This is also the perfect time to invest in a new brush to ensure your hair’s looking its best as we get ready for Christmas. The trend for fuller brows continues into the winter so don’t get tweezer happy. Simply pluck stray hairs when you need to and fill in your browns with a pencil one
shade lighter than your natural colour for a softer, more natural effect. Finally, when it comes to nails this season, you don’t need to look any further than green. From military shades to olive green and apple, it’s the colour that will keep you looking bang on trend and will pop against fashionable colours like plum and navy.

estive Fashion
The time has come to plan your Christmas party outfit, so this year we’ve chosen our three top dresses to ensure you look and feel your best this year. Firstly, the little black dress is always a good choice. This classic staple is flattering and can be worn again and again over the festive season. It’s a timeless must-have guaranteed to add a little extra va-va-voom into your festive proceedings, but if you’re worried about it being a little bit drab, why not inject some colour with your accessories? You can change up your style with a pair of on trend glittery heels or even a cute clutch bag in a bold colour. Oversize necklaces, statement cuffs and dramatic chandelier earrings are other ways to give this piece a completely new look at every occasion you wear it to. It wouldn’t be Christmas without a bit of sparkle, but to ensure you’re oozing glamour
rather than looking like you fell in a pot of glitter, choose pearls, studs, sequins, mirrors, spikes, beads and jewels. If you’re a little worried about looking over the top, add the sparkle with your jewellery, shoes or accessories, while if you’re feeling brave and choose a shimmery dress, make sure to accessorise with something a little less shiny. Finally, for something really dramatic, choose the one-shoulder party dress. This year’s strapless dress, this beautiful style will ensure you’re one of the best dressed at your Christmas party, and always looks elegant. Just be sure to invest in some taupe tape to avoid any bra malfunctions.

DECORATIONS
eck the Halls
Christmas just wouldn’t be the same without a few decorations around the house creating a festive atmosphere. That’s why we’ve come up with a few tips on how to turn your home into the festive retreat.
Sitting down for a delicious turkey dinner is the highlight of most people’s Christmas day, so getting the table settings and decorations just right is key. It may take some planning and creativity, but the meal you’ve spent hours slaving over in the kitchen is worth nothing less.
Firstly, choose the right tablecloth. Whilst Christmas patterns of gold, green and scarlet might seem festive, it can create a cluttered look so instead opt for a cream table cloth with a single bold-coloured runner down the middle. This will give you the perfect
platform to accessorise to your taste. A centrepiece is always a good start to decorating the table. It can match the theme of your Christmas tree and will provide the perfect foundation for other table adornments. Candles are always a favourite, but ensure you don’t buy the scented variety; you don’t want your Christmas dinner smelling of flowers. If you choose plants or foliage, ensure they won’t prohibit your guests from seeing each other or finding the food. Make your guests feel really special with beautiful place settings, handmade napkin rings and name cards. For something rustic, pick holly from the garden or something more homely, ask the kids to get creative with felt, paints and festive ribbons. If you’re planning on inviting a lot of people, a seating plan can ensure the conversation
runs smoothly and everyone has the best time possible. Paper luggage tags are really effective name cards and can be picked up for next to nothing and can be easily customised with festive cheer. Try lacing them with gold ribbon or threading on some mistletoe then flex your calligraphy skills with a gold or silver pen. Old photos of your guests are also a great idea, and one everyone will love. Don’t forget to make an effort choosing the right crackers. Shop-bought versions are fine but homemade crackers give you complete creative control. They’re simple to make and can be customised to suit your gathering so you can make them as kitsch or as elegant as your guests could desire. Finally, you’ve planned the ultimate feast so now’s the perfect time to bring out the best china.
Tree Time The Christmas tree is the focal point of nearly every home at Christmas, and for many decorating the tree is a time-honoured tradition that marks the beginning of the festive period. But how can you ensure that your tree is a stylish addition to your home? Firstly, why not choose a theme. Be creative and find a theme that suits your family’s personality or your interior style. If you’re bored of red and green, try silver and purple for something more modern, or red and white for a Scandinavian feel. Victorian style ornaments, like wooden toy soliders and red bows always looks classic, while oversized baubles or minimal decorations can be more striking. For many people the best thing about the Christmas tree is the twinkling lights that adorn it. Illuminating your Christmas tree from the inside out will give it the most dynamic look so when you put them on, start at the base of the trunk and work your way up, wrapping lights around every major branch, moving from the trunk to the tip and back.
Why not experiment with different lighting schemes until you find one you like, or mix and match colours and styles. Just remember not to skimp on the number of strands you use. When it comes to hanging Christmas tree ornaments, remember to place your favourites in the prime positions first. These will bring individuality and personality to your tree. Next, hang your larger ornaments, spacing them evenly around the tree. Fill in around those ornaments with medium and small size ornaments and be sure to hang some ornaments closer to the trunk to create depth and interest. Of course, not everyone wants or has space for a Christmas tree, so why not choose a modern alternative.
decorations and you’re bound to receive plenty of compliments over this creative alternative. Garlands on the mantlepiece or wound round the banister on the stairs are always beautiful and you can hang pine cones, ribbons or Christmas cards from them for a really festive look.
Christmas decals offer a removable option that brighten up a dark corner and add some festive cheer when space is tight, while branches hung from the ceiling look really effective. Decorate them with a few select

Making a wreath
1. Bend a coat hanger into a rough circular shape and either leave the hook attached for easy hanging or snip it off.
2. Get an old newspaper and crumple a couple of double pages into sausage shapes, then wrap them around your circle. Secure with sticky tape.
3. Start adorning your wreath base with your chosen materials and if you’ve left the hook on, glue some ribbon around it for a decorative finish.
Glitter ‘n’ Glitz
Traditional
For a traditional looking wreath stick to a green, red and gold colour scheme. Using lightweight floral wire or hot glue attach pinecones, baubles and greenery to the wreath base and finish off with a big red bow.
If you’re having a swanky get together this Christmas then a classy gold wreath will fit the bill. Lines of decorative beads and shimmering ribbons are easy to wrap around your wreath base and will look neater than if stuck on individually.
Floral and Frosty
Berry Christmas
Thread a piece of cotton or cloth covered floral stem wire through an assortment of plastic fruit and wrap around your wreath base. Try colour co-ordinating your fruits and build up a collection of vibrant wreaths to be hung on the bedroom doors.
Take apart a fake festive flower arrangement and attach to your wreath base. Leaves with a shimmery frost effect, mistletoe and pinecones will look great when offset by plastic fruit painted silver, and wiry branches.
Create your own Christmas cards & tags Making your own Christmas cards has become more and more popular over the last few years, and not just for those with young children. So this Christmas why not have some fun, get creative and present your friends and family with unique cards they will cherish and place on the mantle piece with pride.
is the money-saving aspect. Buy a pack of white or festive coloured card and get folding. Then your cards are ready to decorate. Raid the ribbon draw, dig out old Christmas cards and gather any pretty buttons you have lying around. Find the hole punch, a pretty gold pen and some white paper; the most essential buy will be a good, strong craft glue.
Firstly, if this is your first step into handmade cards, keep it simple. Choose a material you love and work out two or three designs you like. If you’re planning on making lots of cards, it’s also worth choosing a design that won’t take too long, or you could still be making cards come the new year.
And don’t forget to use the same techniques to create pretty gift tags too. Brown parcel tags are particularly effective and would work well with any of our festive designs.
Next, don’t think you have to hit the craft shops to create really beautiful cards. One of the great things about making your own
from green hand prints, decorated with sparkly stickers will impress everyone, while finger and thumb prints turned into reindeer or snowmen with felt tip pens are cute and festive.
Buttons are the per fect Christm material for as cards .C in pretty designs, oming sizes an colours, d you can create differen t design s everyon that ew stocking ill love. From s to stars , jingle bells to Christm as pudding s.
If you’re looking for the perfect Christmas craft to start with the kids, look no further than creating extra special cards and tags. Christmas trees

1kg cooking apples, peeled and chopped into small chunks 500g eating apples, peeled and chopped into large chunks 450g onions, sliced 50g fresh root ginger, finely chopped 1 tsp peppercorns 500g granulated sugar 250ml cider vinegar 500g cranberries
METHOD
Place all ingredients except cranberries in a large heavy-based saucepan, then gently heat, stirring, until the sugar dissolves. Bring to the boil, then reduce heat and simmer, uncovered, for about 50 mins, stirring regularly until the apples and onions are tender, the mixture has thickened and no watery juice remains. Add the cranberries, then cook for a further 10 mins or so until just softened but not burst. Spoon the hot chutney into sterilised jars and seal. Store unopened in a cool, dark place. The chutney will keep for up to 6 months. Chill on opening.

FOOD & DRINK
SWEET CHILLI JAM
This delicious recipe has a bit of a kick, and goes well with any selection of meats and cheeses this Christmas. 8 garlic cloves, peeled 400g can cherry tomatoes 750g golden caster sugar 250ml red wine vinegar
CINNAMON SHORTBREAD
METHOD
Tip the peppers, chillies (with seeds), ginger and garlic into a food processor, then whizz until very finely chopped. Scrape into a heavy-bottomed pan with the tomatoes, sugar and vinegar, then bring everything to the boil. Skim off any scum that comes to the surface, then turn the heat down to simmer and cook for about 50 mins, stirring occasionally. Once the jam is becoming sticky, continue cooking for 10-15 mins more, stirring frequently so that it doesn’t catch and burn. It should now look like thick, bubbling lava. Cool slightly, transfer to sterilised jars, then leave to cool completely.

INGREDIENTS
280g good-quality dark chocolate, 70% cocoa solids 284ml pot double cream 50g unsalted butter

Remove from heat and pour over the chocolate. Stir together until you have a smooth mixture. Cool and chill for at least four hours. Using a small melon baller, scoop mixture into balls and roll in cocoa powder. Store in the fridge in an airtight container.

appropriate and suitable venue. Send out an all staff email beforehand to guarantee everyone agrees on the setting, theme and dress code to avoid any embarrassing wardrobe confusion. Other activities to spice up your work party are arranging a secret Santa or having a fancy dress theme.
Christmas parties are an age old tradition and can prove a pivotal event in bringing an office together whilst boosting morale when working through the Christmas period.
In the build-up to the party you could arrange a fun Christmas pudding competition where staff make their own creative desserts and the winner is announced with a prize on the eve of the party.
Give your staff an event to really look forward to by ensuring you book your meal early at a fun yet
Of course it’s not just about loud Christmas parties. If you’re looking to spoil your other
half this Christmas, there are plenty of relaxing restaurants with the atmosphere you’re looking for. If you’re planning a pre-Christmas catch-up with your best friend one lunchtime, why not choose something other than turkey and roast potatoes? From Indian and Thai to Italian, Mexican and Chinese, the list is endless of places to try in the area that offer a slightly different menu. Finally, if it’s just a coffee break, and a place to rest your feet after a day of Christmas shopping, you can head to one of the area’s many independent cafes for a Christmas themed drink and sweet treat.

ew home? Make this year extra special by transforming your home into a cosy winter wonderland for you and the family.
Mood lighting is perfect for this time of year so fire up the fireplace and dot some scented candles around the home; cinnamon and cloves is a popular choice for the season. When it comes to the decorations, sort through them and get rid of anything that’s looking a little outdated or has suffered a lot of wear and tear over the years. If you decide there’s nothing salvageable then start from scratch, choose three or four colour schemes to use in your home and get shopping. If you have a bannister leading to the
upper floors then weave tinsel in and out of the vertical newel posts and place a personalised wreath on each of the bedroom doors. The main reception rooms in your home, can either be colour co-ordinated or given separate colour schemes depending on the layout of your home. If your house is open place, then keeping your decorations consistent throughout will work best but otherwise have fun mixing and matching colours in each room. For instance, try out a frosty theme in one room, with light blues and shimmering
silver and snowy white, and accent your decorations with fairy lights. As well as the traditional wreaths, beads and tinsel decorations, you can also invest in some festive cushions and throws which will make your new lounge more homey and comfortable when you nestle up with your favourite Christmas film. Once you’re happy with the interior, move outside and tidy up the garden. Place a small potted Christmas tree at the front door and adorn with twinkling lights. Your new home will be inviting from the outside and comfortable and relaxing on the inside.
