_lsjvtl For me, Christmas never really begins until I’ve had my first mulled wine of the season. There’s something about it that always makes me feel Christmassy, just the smell of all those warming spices makes me all warm and fuzzy – it really is a cup of Christmas spirit. Having been on holiday for the past couple of weeks I’m a bit behind on the festive front, but I had my first glass the other day. Usually my first taste is at the Christmas Market, but this year I went to the pop-up Apres Ski bar at the Abbey Hotel. If you haven’t seen it yet then take a look at the pictures

from the opening party on our Society pages (p22-23), and get down there as soon as you can. I guarantee you’ll come out feeling the urge to do something festive like wrap presents, start singing carols or watch your favourite Christmas movie. Next week’s Weekend magazine will be a special bumper issue, covering two weeks and taking you right up until New Year so make sure you don’t put it out with the recycling until 2014!

t doesn’t take a genius to work out that sub-zero temperatures require serious layers. But there’s a cosy shortcut that’s a marvel at keeping out the cold single-handedly – faux fur. Just one plush garment can shield you from the elements and make you look luxuriously snug (and smug).
Forget the real stuff. In the words of designer king Karl Lagerfeld: “You cannot fake chic, but you can be chic and fake fur.” From teddy bear coats to subtle fluffy trims, there’s a winter wonder to suit everyone’s furry fashion limit. Be faux-fur fabulous with our textured edit.

How the hip place to eat became the street
T
he street food revolution has come to Bath. While in the past the words “street food” might have conjured up images of greasy burgers or late-night kebabs, now it is the latest
tasty trend. Countries like India and Vietnam have long been famed for the cheap and tasty snacks sold by street vendors, and the concept has been trickling through to the UK, with street food markets popping up around the country, and topping the lists of some of London’s top destinations for a Friday night out. Now former chef Terri Robinson has brought the craze to Bath, with the Bath Street Feast which runs every Friday night in Green Park Station, as well as Saturday nights during December. Terri, who runs her own street food van – Daisy Rocks – selling Mexican fajitas and tacos, said: “Last year I bought a 21 foot van and started trying

to find places to trade. “I couldn’t find anywhere in Bath and although there were a couple of places in Bristol I decided I would go to London to see what was going on there. “Bath has so much food – there’s so many restaurants and bars and that’s fantastic – but what street food does is take the formality out of dining. “You can meet up with friends and you don’t all have to eat from the same menu and it doesn’t have to be expensive. You can get a plate of restaurant quality food for around the £6 mark. It just appealed to me.” So in October Terri launched Bath Street Feast. “Green Park Station is a great location for a street food market,” she said. “It’s covered, and we put tables out with candles and it creates a really lovely atmosphere. “There’s a real honesty about street food and it’s really good quality. “The food is locally sourced and it gives people a chance to talk to the people who are actually making the

We are really happy to share our experience and help mentor
people. “Street food has come such a long way from burger vans and kebabs and that’s the message we want to get out.” Bath Street Feast runs in Green Park Station every Friday (and Saturdays during December) from 6pm until around 9.30pm. Anyone who would like to get involved should email Terri on bathstreetfeast@outlook.com or tweet @bathstreetfeast.

Delightfully decadent chocolate fondant
We love this deliciously decadent recipe from Carluccio’s. Chocolate fondants have a reputation for being sophisticated, impressive and difficult to make. This recipe for Tortino al cioccolato con cuore fondente will show you that they’re far from complicated, making them a perfect choice to wow friends and family with. Ingredients for four fondants: 100g chocolate 100g butter 2 egg yolks 2 eggs 75g caster sugar 30g rice flour
Method: ■ Pre-heat the oven to 180C. ■ Melt the chocolate and the butter in a bowl over a bain marie. ■ While the chocolate is melting, mix the eggs and sugar.
14 THE WEEKEND
■ Making sure your chocolate mix is not hot, add it to the sugar and egg mix. Stir and fold in the flour. ■ Cook in the oven for 8 mins. Check that the fondants are cooked but still have a soft centre by carefully removing them from the oven and giving them a shake. ■ If the centre wobbles, place it back in the oven for 30 seconds to a minute. You want a soft and oozy middle, so be careful to watch the clock! ■ As a final touch, lightly sprinkle the plate with a hint of cocoa powder. Serve warm with a dollop of good quality Italian vanilla ice cream or cream. For more recipes from Carluccio’s visit www.carluccios.com. ■ Pairing chocolate with wine can be tricky – and contrary to popular belief champagne and chocolates are not natural bedfellows. Instead, dark chocolates suit inky,

full-bodied reds, creamy milk chocolate tastes divine with a sweet Moscatel, while white chocolate and fruit and nut selections come into their own with a glass of sherry. Italian wines are renowned for being great with food, and a soft and juicy basic Valpolicella, such as Winemakers’ Selection by Sainsbury’s Valpolicella 2012, Italy (£5.99, Sainsbury’s), with its sweet-sour cherries and red berry flavours will compliment the sweetness of this chocolate fondant.

kh z v|{ The walk This week’s walk starts from Southstoke, where every conceivable space carries posters proclaiming ‘Save Southstoke Plateau’. There can be no doubt as to how the residents feel about the plans to build 300 houses on nearby land. The walk heads downhill through Horsecombe Vale to reach Tucking Mill, a diminutive hamlet where a vast railway viaduct towers about the local reservoir. The former Somerset & Dorset Railway, now a cycle path, is followed through to Midford, with Midford Castle being a landmark along the way. This handsome residence was built to the design of the club symbol used on playing cards, a reference to the original owner’s gambling success that funded its construction. After an almost obligatory stop at the Hope & Anchor in Midford, the bed of the long disused Somerset Coal Canal is followed through to Combe Hay, where we find the decaying remains of a noted flight of locks. A walk with history and intrigue at every turn, as well as some fine viewpoints across this corner of Northeast Somerset.

He might be best known for playing the loveable Minty in EastEnders, but Cliff Parisi is channelling a more sinister side for his latest role in Bath’s Theatre Royal Christmas panto

liff Parisi will warmly receive a barrage of boos and hisses from thousands of eager theatre-goers – young and old – as he takes to Bath Theatre Royal’s stage as Captain Hook in the venue’s annual pantomime, which this year is Peter Pan.
24 THE WEEKEND
“It’s a nice change to play a baddie,” says Cliff. “Minty started off as a henchman – his loveable side just couldn’t be contained. “I think this Hook is going to have an element of fun about him, but he’s also quite sinister. “It’s really good fun and I’m working with a really great team, so I’m enjoying it.
www.bathchronicle.co.uk
The songs and dancers are all good fun and I have a lot of nice jokes, and there’s the chance to torment the audience. “It’s hard work though, and very intense. There’s so much to know. It’s like the Hamlet of pantomimes and the closer it gets, the bigger it seems. “We’ve just done a run-through though, and we are in pretty good shape!”

I love Christmas, I truly love it. “It’s a great time for families to get together and enjoy the fun, and panto is part of that tradition – I love it. “I’m going to really enjoy Christmas!” This year, Cliff and his family will be spending Christmas in Bath, and his young son will be coming to watch his Dad performing on stage. “He’s really excited,” says Cliff. “It’s his birthday soon and he’s having a pirates and princesses party, so I might take my outfit along.” It’s not Cliff’s first time in Bath, although his memories of a previous visit are rather hazy. “I did a film here once,” he says. “Don’t ask me what it was, or when it was though! I didn’t get to see much of Bath though, because it was a night shoot and I was just in and out. “This is my first time working here properly in
the theatre. I’m really looking forward to performing in the Theatre Royal – it’s supposed to be one of the most beautiful theatres in the country.” It’s been a hectic few weeks for Cliff who also stars in the BBC drama Call The Midwife which will be airing its Christmas special in a prime slot on Christmas Day. “I finished filming and then came to Bath the following day to start rehearsing for Peter Pan,” he says. “Working on stage and on TV are completely different disciplines. Of course it’s all acting but they are very different styles and when you change from one to the other there’s a transition period. “Everything’s much bigger on stage, and you have to take it back for TV. “There’s nothing like a live audience though.” Peter Pan runs from today until January 12.

ath’s panto season gets off to a flying start tonight with the opening of the Theatre Royal’s swashbuckling treat Peter Pan. It’s all aboard the pirate ship for TV star Cliff Parisi from EastEnders and Call the Midwife and for local panto favourites Chris Harris as the dame and Jon Monie. The cast also features Jessica Punch in the title role and comedy acrobats The Nitwits as the Pirate Crew, as the story of Peter Pan is staged as a pantomime at the Theatre Royal Bath for the very first time. JM Barrie’s Peter Pan is one of the best-loved stories in childrens’ literature. When Peter Pan flies into the Darling children’s nursery one night and takes them off to Neverland, a thrilling adventure begins in the magical world of Tinker Bell, Tiger Lily and the Lost Boys, where they do battle with Captain Hook and his pirate crew. Packed with comedy, singing, dancing, beautiful costumes and plenty of audience participation, Peter Pan promises to be a swashbuckling and unmissable Christmas treat that’s got everything – with flying,

CGI special effects and all the traditional ingredients that make Bath pantomimes so special. The West’s best-loved dame Chris Harris returns by popular demand to star as Governess Gertie and will also direct the show. An institution in the world of panto, Chris Harris has performed in pantomimes across the South West for more than 30 years and 2013 marks his 13th consecutive year on stage in Bath’s Christmas show. Jon Monie returns to the Theatre Royal to play Smee with the mischievous comedy and hilarious antics, which have made him a huge favourite with Bath’s pantomime audiences. An award-winning stand-up comedian and experienced television presenter, earlier this year Jon performed Back for Good, a sell-out stand-up show at Bath’s Ustinov Studio with his comedy partner Graham Avent, raising funds for local charities. The role of Peter Pan will be played by Jessica Punch, who last performed at the Theatre Royal Bath in Mother Goose in 2005. Joanna Forest plays the role of

The role of Michael will be shared by Oliver Prutton and Haydn May, both from the Dorothy Coleborn School. This year’s pantomime will also feature the delightful young dancers and Lost Boys from Bath’s Dorothy Coleborn School of Dance. Motown hits, at Bath’s Forum on Saturday. Show producer Michael Taylor says: “Five-star performances authentically revive the style and sophistication of all the Detroit legends.” Hits by the Temptations, Supremes, Four Tops, Jackson 5, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Lionel Richie and more feature in the hit concert show. “There’s dazzling dance moves and glittering costumes galore in the ultimate festive party,” says Michael. “Plus the incredible Magic of Motown band, tighter than Motown’s house band the Funk Brothers in their prime.” This year has been very special one as far as Motown is concerned, according to Michael. “It marks 50 years of number one hits from the world’s favourite record label,” he says. To mark the occasion, The Magic of Motown is preparing to sign, seal and deliver its biggest production ever in its

ten-year history. “Sixties classics give way to present-day masterpieces from Lionel Richie and Diana Ross,” says Michael. “Sadly, many of the original Motown legends are either no longer with us or no longer touring. “The Magic of Motown is the nearest you’ll get to authentically capturing their incredible musical legacy in a live show. “Our young cast is able to reflect the exuberance and excitement of these songs as they were originally performed.” Equal care is taken to reproduce the original look of the Motown stars on stage. It was not just the music that set Berry’s signings apart from all other hit singers of the time. For mass market appeal, artistes’ images were carefully controlled from dress and choreography, right down to their manners. Michael says: “We’ve employed the services of top costume designer Claire
Davis to create a fabulous selection of colourful costumes for the cast, while leading man Andre Lejaune is responsible for choreographing the cast to perform the intricate dance moves for which Motown stars were famous.” With the production presenting so many shows this coming year, Michael says there will be “nowhere to run, nowhere to hide” to keep you away from the Magic of Motown. Andre added: “With many new numbers added to our already hit-packed show we needed to ensure the choreography was right on point. “The show is called The Magic of Motown for a reason, it’s our job to ensure theatregoers have a truly magical night to remember. “Don’t miss the show of the year and its I’ll Be There Tour ... just call its name and you’ll be there.” ■ Tickets cost from £21 plus booking fee on 0844 888 9991.

Bath writer and retired teacher Colin Maggs has written dozens and dozens of books about British railways, particularly those here in the South West. In his latest book Colin gives detailed attention to the most iconic railway company of the age of steam – the Great Western Railway. The book’s publication is neatly timed to coincide with an important new exhibition at Bath’s Victoria Art Gallery, called Great Western Railway in Art: Bath and the Great Western Railway, which runs until the beginning of February. Brunel’s Great Western Railway opened in sections from 1838, transforming the whole of southern England and making travel quicker and easier for everyone. The Great Western Railway was a British railway company that linked London with the South West and West of England, and most of Wales. It was founded in 1833, received its enabling Act of Parliament in 1835 and ran its first trains in 1838. It was engineered by Isambard Kingdom Brunel. The GWR was the only company to keep its identity through the Railways Act 1921, which amalgamated it with

the remaining independent railways within its territory, and it was finally merged at the end of 1947, when it was nationalised and became the Western Region of British Railways. The GWR was called by some God’s Wonderful Railway and by others the Great Way Round, but it was famed as the Holiday Line, taking many people to resorts in South West England. The company’s locomotives, many of which were built in the firm’s workshops at Swindon, were painted a Brunswick-green colour while, for most of its existence, it used a two-tone chocolate and cream livery for its passenger coaches. Goods wagons were painted red, but this was later changed to mid grey. Great Western trains included long-distance express services, such as the Flying Dutchman, the Cornish Riviera Express and the Cheltenham Spa Express. It also operated many suburban and rural services, some operated by steam railmotors or autotrains. In his new comprehensive history of the GWR, Colin writes of less wellknown aspects of the company’s history, its construction and expansion and the publicity it used. We learn how it was a cradle-to-the-

grave employer and at Swindon provided a hospital, school, baths and recreational facilities. The book is packed with more than 100 photographs and period posters, most from Colin’s own collection. The History of The Great Western Railway by Colin Maggs is published by Amberley at £20.

Festive feel-good films A Christmas treat at the Pound arts centre at Corsham includes a double screening of two festive films. On Friday December 20 at 4pm you can see both The Christmas Candle which was shot locally and When Santa Fell to Earth. The Christmas Candle, from best-selling author Max Lucado, was shot on location in Biddestone earlier in the year, and the Pound has been granted special permission for an early screening just in time for Christmas. In Gladbury, legend has it that every 25 years an angel visits the candle maker and touches a single candle. Whoever lights this candle receives a miracle on Christmas Eve. But in 1890, at the dawn of the electric age, this old legend may come to an end. The movie marks the feature film debut for two-time Grammy Award-nominee singer Susan Boyle, who dazzled the world when she sang I Dreamed a Dream onBritain’s Got Talent. The Christmas Candle also stars Samantha Barks, who wowed audiences with her performance of Eponine in the recent Academy Award-nominated film, Les Misérables, as well as Hans Matheson (Clash of the Titans, Sherlock Holmes), Lesley Manville (Disney’s A Christmas Carol), Sylvester McCoy (The Hobbit Trilogy, Doctor Who), John Hannah (The Mummy, Four Weddings and a Funeral), Barbara Flynn (Miss Potter), and James
Cosmo (Game of Thrones, Braveheart). When Santa Fell to Earth, a film based on the book by best-selling author Cornelia Funke tells the story of two children whose Christmas is miraculously turned around, following the crash landing of Santa Niklas Goodfellow. Gerold Geronimus Goblynch, the ruthless new leader of the Great Christmas Council, is determined to turn the holiday season into his personal moneymaking scheme. He wants to end children’s joyous wishes by outlawing all of the old magical ways. Under his leadership, snowmobiles
are to replace reindeer; elves and angels are banned, and Santas who go against these policies are turned into chocolate. Niklas Goodfellow, a spirited, humorous young Santa, emerges as the last, and thus real Santa. He and two angels named Matilda and Emmanuel, an invisible reindeer, and a bunch of elves go into hiding from the Council. Two children named Ben and Charlotte, and Charlotte’s dog, Mutt, join forces to save Niklas from being turned into chocolate. To book tickets, visit www.poundarts.org.uk, or call the box office on 01249 701628.
