_lsjvtl We’re getting very excited about the upcoming festive season, but the lead up to Christmas can be stressful, so why not kick back with a few movies from the final weekend of the Bath Film Festival? Or if you prefer the thrill of a live show to break up your gift shopping, check out our guide to all the theatre and panto action coming to Bath throughout December. The party season means being dressed to impress, so we’ve made a foray to vintage fashion boutique, Deadly Is The Female, where we chat to owner Claudia Adrianna. Her eye for style and personal touch will
EDITORIAL Lynne Fernquest ensure you look a million dollars. One woman who enjoys stylish clothes as much as she did flak jackets is former war reporter, Kate Adie, who tells us about her new book about the pivotal role women played on the home front during World War Two. And on a musical note, the Pig and Fiddle hosts an Oxjam charity party this Sunday, raising funds for Syria, and we dive into the some of the great wordsmiths booked to appear at next year’s Literature Festival.

in The Sunday Times’ style magazine and This Morning, not mention the whole Nigella Lawson “red dress sensation” which was caused after the celebrated TV chef appeared on US television in a dress from Deadly’s Billion Dollar Baby range. “That was a once-in-a-life-time experience,” smiles Claudia. “We were getting messages from people all over the world talking about that dress. She looked fantastic in it and she was amazing, tweeting links to the shop.” Specialising in ’40s and ’50s style, pin up and femme fatale fashion, Deadly is run with earnest excitement by Claudia. “I was already buying and importing clothes for myself and thought that others may want something different to the normal high street too,” she recalls. “I’m inspired by American film noir, ’40s and ’50s Hollywood glamour – red carpets and cocktails. It’s a fascination that all started with movies such as Grease and Dirty Dancing. “As a young girl I loved visiting the Bath Museum of Costume – Bath is so lucky to have such an inspirational centre. “My mum, and shop Saturday

girl, Siobhan always encouraged me to be different growing up. “Throughout my education, both at Ralph Allen School and Bath College, teachers and tutors encouraged me to explore my artistic talents and I went on to study fashion and textiles at London College of Fashion. “I stayed in London working as a designer for a small company, but after six years in London I came home. It was my mum who suggested Frome over Bath, after reading an article, and I absolutely love being in Frome. “On my first visit I walked up Catherine Hill and fell in love with the place – it was just so beautiful and different. “It was a real princess ‘I want a pretty shop’ moment and when I saw the vacant shop I just knew. “It looked a bit shabby around the edges but I’d fallen in love. I was super naive, without a real business plan, my only expectation was to pay the rent. At the time the economy was crashing and people warned ‘you’re brave, shops just come and go’. But I had a vision and dream ... It’s been a fascinating experience and I love it.” In the autumn of 2008, Deadly opened its doors to an unsuspecting public but soon developed a strong reputation for celebrating women and womanliness. “Our clothing is all about fantasy, luxury, indulgence and escapism,” says Claudia. “When we first opened I had
so little stock and Deadly has definitely evolved – it needed to if it was to succeed. “So much has changed but the idea has stayed the same ... to provide classic women’s wear that makes women feel fantastic – to accentuate the good bits and hide any flaws. “The range of clothing is vintageinspired, stylish and flattering, designed with women in mind. I find with high street fashion you have to fit into the clothing, but our range aims to reflect who you are and works with your body. “I see customers physically change when they try on clothes. They stand differently, their posture changes and they become more confident – it comes from within and it’s really special. “It’s hard to be feminine, girly and sexy today – sexy as in something you feel, rather than a judgement. “We have such a giggle with our customers who often send or tweet me pictures of themselves looking fantastic in their dresses – so much positivity.” When asked what next for Deadly, Claudia answers with a sparkle that only comes with genuine excitement and passion: “Keep working, keep moving forward and keep shopping. “It’s hard work and I couldn’t possibly thank my support network and my Deadly girls enough. “If I keep getting excited, others will be excited too. I just want to make people smile. Make people feel sexy and happy about themselves ... that what makes me happy.” For further information visit www.deadlyisthefemale.com Lhu Jpnnhul

Bedtime beauty tips
Banish eye bags and tired skin with a restful night. Lisa Haynes reveals how to reap the benefits of beauty sleep. “Sleep is affected by melatonin levels, which in turn is affected by light and darkness, so the seasonal change causes all sorts of disruption to the body,” explains Dick Middleton, technical director for Schwabe herbal remedies. But if you can get your optimum amount of sleep, you’ll set yourself up for a recharged and revived new dawn. With the restorative beauty sleep fairies getting to work overnight, there’s more to pillow time than meets the eye.
Drift off
If you’re a sleep under-achiever, stress and anxiety are often to blame when it comes to disturbed nights. One in five people experience difficulty sleeping, according to Patient.co.uk, and 70 per cent of those are women. “Sleep is not a passive process – you need to respect it and learn how to do it as a skill,” says sleep expert Kathleen McGrath. Besides bulging eye bags, a bad night’s sleep can also start to manifest itself through a tired-out complexion. “A decline in skin quality can be evident if you’re deprived of sleep for more than one or two nights,” explains McGrath. “People who do shift work often tend to have more problems with skin and weight gain due to sporadic sleep. “You may not necessarily need eight hours sleep a night – it’s really what works for you.”

THE WEEKEND
Divine dreamland
Forget internet shopping and playing games on your iPad in bed. Create the ideal sleep environment so that your bedroom is fit for purpose – many experts advise that £ it should be reserved for sex and sleep only. “Start by lighting an aromatherapy candle in your bedroom two hours before you are planning on going to bed to give the essential oils a chance to be released into the air,” advises Nicola Elliott, founder of NEOM Organics and a qualified aromatherapist. A calming routine combined with pure essential oils is a dreamy double act when it comes to promoting deep sleep.

o longer a novelty, the neon and fluoro trend has filtered from the catwalk to contemporary home design. Whether your preferred home style is modern or traditional, a splash of neon or swatch of fluoro can instantly brighten the mood and change the tone of a room. Indeed, designers have discovered they can highlight areas, create shadows and add interest when these contemporary pieces are put in the spotlight. Just one or two flashes of neon can look striking against a muted backdrop. Michelle Alger, head of home at Heal’s, says: “The neon and fluoro trend started in the fashion industry and has really been embraced by the world of interiors. “It’s a fantastic tool for adding accent to a room through a minimalist touch. From the washed-out, watercolour fluoro look of our Amy Sia cushions, to the cool, classic neons of the Waterford crystal range, it’s definitely a key trend for autumn/winter 2013 home collections.” Here’s an up-to-the-minute colour chart to reflect the movement.

Luscious larder Gina Baksa talks to Bath cookery school owner, Laraine Hare, about her new recipe book
R
angemaster full blast, kitchen table laden with food, convivial company and inspiring conversation… my kind of heaven. And teacher and author Laraine Hare’s too, it seems. We’re talking food, recipes, local producers and farmer’s markets, all of which feature in her mouthwatering new book, Bath’s Luscious Larder. Two years’ extensive research has culminated in 48 inspiring and easy-to-make recipes, cleverly divided into seasons, with three courses for each. And on each facing page, the story of the producer whose provenance features in the recipe – all of whom are located within a 50-mile radius of Bath. This was a deliberate decision so Laraine could include Julian Temperley’s Somerset Cider Brandy at Burrow Hill. “Julian’s is the first brandy to use apples, rather than grapes, that has been recognised by the EU,” she tells me. “The quality is amazing. I use it all the time in my cooking.” Bath’s Luscious Larder is clearly a labour of love, with striking photos to match and beautifully illustrated by local water-colourist, Jan Tozer, a long-time friend. Her stunning paintings bring the recipes and provenance alive. “I took Jan to all the producers – we had a fantastic time. But I don’t think she actually realised it would be a proper book!” Laraine laughs.
❝
And what a book. Each season comprises four starters, four main courses (including game and fowl) and four desserts. From autumnal favourite beef wellington, via the wintery delights of venison in port glaze to spring’s smoked salmon tart, and a summery trout en croûte, each meal a feast for the senses, and perfectly balanced. The desserts are sublime: plum clafoutis, apricot and almond cake… “My favourite is diplomat’s pudding,” Laraine reveals. “It’s the perfect winter treat, especially now when my urge for comfort food is on the increase. It’s happiness-inducing in every way!” Laraine envisioned more than just a recipe book. “I’m passionate about buying locally sourced food, so we can make an active contribution to the local

economy. So many of these businesses are family run and need our support. “Food and cooking brings us together. I was lucky growing up in that I had a mother who actively encouraged me to experiment in the kitchen. And I’ve done the same with my own children and my grandchildren. “It’s liberating and gives you confidence. I wanted to spawn a long line of confident cooks!” That’s why Laraine created her own cookery school. “I realised lots of people hadn’t learned how to cook, and I could see how they’d appreciate learning – for themselves and others. You can join for private one-to-one sessions or bring a group of friends. It all takes place here in my Georgian kitchen, and I’ve a garden for outdoor cooking in the summer. “The way schools teach cooking is so scientific, it often takes the fun and love out of it. I also taught special-needs children cooking, and it helped to calm them. They were quite

violent kids, but once they had a focus, and felt like they were succeeding, they changed and became happier people. Cooking grounds us. “Food and teaching is the perfect combination. It gives me the excuse to work on new recipes, so I have new things to offer clients. I’m always looking for new ingredients, new producers.” Cheese features highly in the book – which does she recommend? “I love Tim Homewood’s delicious sheep’s cheeses, especially his highly rated haloumi. His girlfriend Angela makes divine jams, chutneys and cheesecake – the perfect partnership! “I also love Julianna Sledi’s excellent Baronet cheese made from rich Jersey milk from local cows.” Laraine was touched by the dedication to quality and ethics she discovered on her provenance road trip. “Most producers I met have returned to traditional methods to ensure a high level of care for animal welfare and the environment. “The owner at Dartland chicken farm, for instance, even got up before the chickens to despatch the chosen one for the day, so they’d be calm when their time had come. That’s dedication.” Two years of research led her to travel hundreds of miles. From Bush Farm Bison Centre near Warminster, via The Square Garden at Longleat to Bibury Trout Farm,
a total of 56 producers have been visited, their provenance used in each recipe and listed. The book will send any foodie into paroxysms of delight. An ideal gift, or a subtle hint to get a certain someone to cook for you. What would she like readers to take from Bath’s Luscious Larder? “I do hope that it will encourage people to enjoy the very special foods available in this area. The farmers’ markets are an invaluable source, as well as outlets such as Hartley Farm Shop, which has a strong sense of community, as well as helping children to learn about the quality of the food they eat. “Most of all, though, this book is about the pleasure of eating glorious food and supporting our brilliant local producers in these difficult economic times.” Have you plans for a follow-up book? “Yes, I’m currently researching Georgian food and kitchens… it’s fascinating! “Food and food presentation was used to denote wealth. Hopefully it will be out by next summer.” Bath’s Luscious Larder (£14, Balmy Kitchen Publishing) is on sale at the Highgrove shop on Milsom Street, the Moorland Road bookshop, PJ’s Farm stall in Green Park, Paxton and Whitfield on John Street, Chelsea Road Deli and Waterstones. Ingredients for crunchy apple pudding
60g fresh breadcrumbs 60g butter 60g Demerara sugar 6 apples, peeled, cored and roughly chopped 400ml apple juice 1-2 teaspoons grated fresh ginger root 25g plain dark chocolate, grated 150ml double cream A little white sugar
A humble apple crumble In her book Bath’s Luscious Larder, Laraine Hare shares a recipe for a crunchy apple pudding and talks about Keith Goverd, who produces a wonderful range of apple juices, as well as cider and cider vinegar. She writes: “Keith’s lovely old house near Compton Dando is surrounded by sheds and the equipment needed to run his highly efficient business. “He prefers to keep his business small, as expansion would inevitably require new staff and equipment, which may have a negative impact on the product. “Keith has a great deal of experience in both the scientific and the practical aspects of food production. “He has travelled all over the world, working in a range of areas connected to the food industry, and has a broad understanding of practically any related issue that you could question him about. “He has reservations about organic foods, which he sees mainly as a marketing system, and prefers to focus on traditional methods and good manufacturing and management. For example, in an orchard it is important to ensure that there are plants that encourage the range of
14 THE WEEKEND
insects and birds necessary to encourage pollination, as well as aphid control. “As director and chairman of Bath Farmers’ Market, he is very involved in ensuring that good practice is observed, and in particular that foods are correctly labelled to show ingredients and provenance. “Keith has a zero waste policy. His excellent cider vinegar comes from apple juice that is too acetic to drink. Its healthy qualities come from the malic acid, which is not found in other vinegars, and which helps boost the immune system. “All of the pomace, which is the

pressed waste from the apples, is used as compost.” The method for making Laraine’s crunchy apple pudding: ■ Melt the butter in a pan, and add the breadcrumbs and Demerara sugar. Cook gently until golden brown and crisp. ■ Cook the apples gently in the apple juice and the ginger until it becomes a purée. This takes about half an hour. ■ Place the apples in a dish, then cover with the breadcrumb mixture. ■ When this is cool, cover with whipped cream and top with the grated chocolate.

kh z v|{ The walk It’s that time of year when time is at a premium, the hours of daylight are minimal and yet there is that nagging desire to just get out and have some fresh air and exercise. Here is the perfect short walk, and with enough of a climb along the way to ensure some decent exercise. From Dundas Wharf, where the finest aqueduct in Southern England stands alongside the junction of the Kennet & Avon Canal with the long defunct Somerset Coal Canal, the walk climbs steeply uphill to the former quarrying settlement of Conkwell. The K&A was the lifeline that carried the local stone far and wide. A quiet lane drops downhill through the ancient Warleigh Wood before the grand finale, a riverside path alongside the Avon deep in the valley bottom. And if there is time at journey’s end, explore a short restored section of the Somerset Coal Canal to find the Angelfish Restaurant and enjoy maybe coffee or a creamed tea or a delicious light lunch.

Bath Rugby Foundation ball Bath Rugby Foundation recently celebrated its 10th anniversary with a birthday party themed fundraising ball at Bath’s Assembly Rooms, raising more than £10,500. Guests enjoying the night included Sir James Dyson, chairman of Bath Rugby Bruce Craig, chief executive of Bath and North East Somerset Council Dr Jo Farrar, council leader Councillor Paul Crossley and many from the local business community, including Thrings, Barclays, Deloitte, The Consortium and Withy King. Bath Rugby players, including Stuart Hooper, George Ford, Gavin Henson, Carl Ferns and Jonathan Joseph also showed their support for the Foundation’s ten-year milestone.
22 THE WEEKEND
While the night was a celebration, there was also the serious business of raising money to ensure Bath Rugby Foundation, which is an independent charity funded entirely by fundraising, sponsorship and donations, is able to continue its work for another decade. Auction lots included a signed England Six Nations Rugby Shirt, F1 Winner’s jeroboam of champagne, a cocktails masterclass for ten at The Porter, a private shopping experience with Amanda Wakely and even the Bath Rugby flag from the top of Farleigh House, signed by the squad. Bath Rugby Foundation head of fundraising, Halena Coury, said: “Our 10th-anniversary ball was all about celebration. It was about celebrating

Bath Rugby Foundation’s work with children and young people in the local community over the past ten years. It was about celebrating the real differences we have been able to make in their lives through the power of sport. “It was also about celebrating all our sponsors, partners, volunteers and fundraisers who have helped make our work possible. “It was a wonderful evening and we are incredibly grateful to everyone for coming along and for being so generous on the night. “With their continued support we will be able to carry on working with children in the community for another ten years to come.”

Home front heroes For a generation the name Kate Adie is synonymous with the coverage of conflicts from far-flung corners of the world. Siobhan Stayt talks to her before her visit to Bath
K
ate Adie, the veteran journalist, is hoping to educate the public about the war experiences of those much closer to home, in her latest book, Fighting on the Home Front: The Legacy of Women in World War One. The book tells the stories of very ordinary women who found themselves at the centre of a new type of war. For the first time, those left behind at home found their lives dramatically altered by events taking place overseas. Adie said it was her experiences as a BBC war correspondent that prompted her to look

again at a war which she, like everybody, had grown up hearing about. “I have always thought that if you are reporting on a conflict, wherever it is taking place, then you need to report on every part of it,” she said. “You not only need to look at the frontline and the military aspect of war, but at how all people are affected. “The First World War was the first time that this happened, where ordinary people in Britain were affected. “All other wars before this were hundreds of miles away, so this was the first time that war actually came into people’s homes.” The book looks at the many different ways the role of women changed during the First World War, their desire to contribute to the war effort and the need for them to fill the jobs left by men who went away to fight. Adie’s research saw her travel all over the country to uncover the human stories behind a topic which is already well-documented. She looked through the archives of local newspapers, visited history centres, and was staggered by the depth of detail

about the challenges women were facing in a fast-changing world. And one of the biggest things that struck her, and one which she hopes will resonate with readers, is how much life has changed over the past 100 years. She said: “It was a very different world back then, the accepted conventions and attitudes of women in work. “And it was a slow process. At the end of the book I do briefly touch on the fact that it was still a long time after the First World War that things began to really change for women. “For example, it wasn’t until the 1980s that a woman was allowed to drive a train.” Adie said the contrast between the attitudes to women in war in the early 20th century and the fact that she, as a

She added: “And it is not just my job, but the everyday jobs that women had not been allowed to do. They weren’t allowed to deliver the post, they weren’t allowed to work in a signal box, it is these jobs that we just take for granted now.” With the upcoming anniversary of the Great War, the timing of Adie’s new book is sure to mean a new group of interested readers are likely to pick it up to find out more about such an iconic chapter in the country’s history. And she said looking back to the past was an important part of understanding the present day, especially when wanting to learn more about conflicts. “It was always hugely important to me as
a journalist,” she said. “You can’t understand why people are fighting, unless you go back decades and look at what happened back then. “You have to know what’s fuelling them.” Adie, who grew up in the North East of England, has many links to the Bath area, having covered the city in her job as a reporter for BBC Radio Bristol in the 1970s. The 68-year-old now lives in Dorset, but said she was a regular visitor to the city and will be here to talk about her new book next week. The book event has been organised by Toppings and Co and will be held at Christ Church, in Julian Road, on Tuesday, December 10. Doors open at 7.30pm for an 8pm start, with tickets costing £7/£8. The Bluebird was a Nobel Prize-winning play for Maurice Maeterlinck, which was premiered in Moscow back in 1908 and then opened in London in time for Christmas 1909. Tonight, Bath City church presents its version of The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe at the Forum, where it runs until Sunday. The cast is drawn from children, students and church community members. Aslan, Mr Tumnus, the Wicked Witch and the Beavers are all making an appearance in a sparkling adaptation of the CS Lewis classic.

Natalie will be making her UK stage debut in Alan Ayckbourn’s Things We Do For Love, a home-grown Theatre Royal Bath production directed by Laurence Bowell. The singer’s smash hit single Torn, and the subsequent album, Left Of The Middle, sold more than six million copies worldwide. Things We Do For Love marks her UK

Making hilarity and ingenuity from the things we do for love, this sharp, insightful and uproariously funny drama about love’s trials and tribulations sees the UK’s greatest-living playwright at the peak of his art. Natalie Imbruglia will play Nikki Wickstead, the victim of a classic Ayckbourn love triangle, in a long-awaited revival of one of the most popular plays of the nineties. An eclectic mix of music for Oxjam

usic lovers can enjoy a host of live bands and acoustic acts this Sunday, as The Pig and Fiddle holds its firstever Oxjam Christmas party to raise money for the Syria crisis. As well as live performances from local bands, there will be a diverse mix of acoustic artists and spoken word acts, with DJ sets in the evening. Charlie Essam, event organiser and promoter for The Pig and Fiddle, has already enjoyed success hosting similar events over the years, notably the three Sunday Pig festivals, but he’s hoping this weekend’s fundraiser will be his best yet. “The Pig is a real asset to Bath, providing a space in which live music can thrive. “As well as supporting local musicians

we attract artists from around the country and I think our Oxjam Christmas party is a great example of the range of music we are bringing to the city,” he said. Among the local musicians performing on the day are Kerensa Mason, a talented solo artist and student at the City of Bath College, singer-songwriter Georgie Vale, and reggae-ska-hop band, The Clunks. Local poet Matt De’Lisser is also on the line up, along with the Bristol based BBC-commissioned, spoken-word artist Steve Duncan. The headline acts come in the form of British singer-songwriter Emmy J Mac and the eight-piece hip-hop collective, Sounds of Harlowe. Emmy J Mac is best known for her impressive performances on BBC’s The Voice UK while Sounds of Harlowe have enjoyed a memorable year supporting

We’re expecting a really good turn-out; the last time Sounds of Harlowe played here they managed to pull in the most substantial crowd ever witnessed at the Pig and Fiddle. “On a personal level it’s great to be in the position to use Bath’s local talent and raise money for such a worthy cause, while putting on a great party at the same time.” As well as live music throughout the day, there will also be a fundraiser raffle, hosted by local funny man James Timothy, better known as JT. Blissful festival of books
I
f you have always thought that two weeks of seeing some of the best writers in the world descend on Bath for the annual Literature Festival was pure bliss – well, now it’s official. The theme of next year’s event, which opens on February 28 is ‘bliss’ – so prepare to be inspired, cheered, challenged, moved and uplifted with people like Germaine Greer, former Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams, Great British Menu star Mark Hix and Mock the Week regular Mark Watson. In her first programme as artistic director for Bath, award-winning writer, comedian and BBC Radio 4 broadcaster Viv Groskop presents more than 150 events across ten days and a host of international literary names. For the first time in the festival’s 19-year history a selection of programme highlights is on sale before Christmas, ahead of the full line-up in January. Tickets are now on sale for a selection of top

events , before the full programme is announced in January. In the early bird line up just announced you can join sporting legend Henry Blofeld at the Forum, or listen to a lively debate about the changing role of news in our lives with Alain de Botton, Jon Snow and Jonathan Dimbleby. At the Guildhall the festival welcomes the unmissable, always-controversial feminist Germaine Greer, former Archbishop of Canterbury and Tolstoy devotee Rowan Williams, best selling authors Joanna Trollope and Hanif Kureshi, culinary legends Claudia Roden and Great British menu star Mark Hix, comedy headliner and Mock the Week regular Mark Watson. As if all those weren’t enough you can also see Edinburgh Fringe sell-out show Austentatious, who will create an entirely new Jane Austen novel before your very eyes. You can now book for any of these events at the Bath box office on

Family feel to festival finale
T
he Bath Film Festival comes to a close this weekend and the final offerings include a family treat from Japan and a Swedish film just right for anyone who has ever been 13 years old. On Saturday they are showing Mamoru Hosoda’s Wolf Children a beautiful fantasy film about a wolf man’s family. When Hanna falls in love with a handsome stranger in her class she little expects to find out he is a wolf man. After the birth of her two children, a tragedy forces Hanna into the role of a singe mother in the big city, with daughter Yuki and son Ame, who are both part-wolf. Her only option is to move to the country and try and start a new life. Japanese filmmaker Hosoda follows in the footsteps of the maker of My Neighbour Totoro with a beautifully animated and enchanting family film. Far from the Western world’s perceptions of the horrors of wolves Wolf Children embraces very different Eastern ideas and traditions. We are the Best is about 13year-old-punks in 1980’s Stockholm, directed by Lukas Moodysson. The film was winner of the audience award at the Reykjavik International Film Festival and is being hailed as a future classic of the genre. Set in Stockholm at the start of the eighties and based on the graphic novel Never Goodnight by Lukas’s wife it follows three 12-and 13-year-old girls who are determined to start a punk band, motivated both by the spirit of punk and by a strong dislike of their PE
teacher’s authoritarian teaching methods. Sharply observed, never condescending and sometimes very funny, this is an intimate, engaging story full of feminism and rebellion. It is being shown at the Little Theatre on Sunday afternoon.
’
Nurturing new talent In a special event at Bath Film Festival tomorrow , five films are being shown as part of the IMDb New Filmmaker Awards. The showings take place at the Little Theatre in Bath, with movie getting the £1,000 prize. Film enthusiasts will also be able to see the results of the £5,000 awarded to the winner of the IMDb Scripts Award, which has now been made into a film. The question is will any match the
excellence of previous year’s Pussy Cat or Head Over Heels? The five films on show include a mature and brilliantly designed animated short, a story about a man whose obsession with time leads him into a new adventure, and an hilarious film about a man who can’t walk in a straight line. There is a delightful minidocumentary about working in Savile Row and a piece about a boy’s love for the forest. Tickets cost £12 or £9.
