The Big Read

_lsjvtl We may be biased but we know that our city is viewed as a haven, an escape from the rate race, particularly by stressed-out city types and celebrities. In this edition of the Weekend we talk to celebrity comedian of the moment Jack Whitehall on why he chose to come to Bath to write his latest book. We also took the opportunity to talk to him about his return visit in December. Don’t however be fooled into thinking that it is all rest and relaxation here, because far from taking its foot off the gas Bath is

EDITORIAL Lynne Fernquest gearing up for the party season and also looking ahead to 2014 and Bath in Fashion. Now in its fifth year, Bath in Fashion’s mission is to celebrate a city that has both style and substance. Look at our society pages for those who are taking part. In May Bath will be cementing its fashion credentials with fashion shows, exhibitions, lunches and master classes – all perfectly packaged of course.

Checks come in every guise for autumn/winter 13, from loud tartans to subtle tweeds and brand new grid prints. No other print screams winter quite like the check family, and you don't need Scottish blood running through your veins to go all out with the trend - just find your check mate and style it your way. So give circles the boot. This season, it's hip to be square.

Going grey the stylish way No longer something to dread and disguise, silver hair is soaring up in the style stakes. Lisa Haynes investigates a (growing) grey area. Kelly Osbourne kicked off the trend, Rihanna follicly-followed suit, and Nicole Richie went shocking white ... Seems going grey is catching on – no matter what your age. With high profile stars embracing silver tresses, the taboo has been lifted on embracing naturally grey hair. Or has it? The average woman will spend £228.50 a year having their hair coloured, according to a survey by nice‘n easy No Ammonia. That’s almost £10,000 on hitting the dye bottles in an average lifetime. While some spot that first flicker of silver in their mid-twenties, for others, greys don’t appear until your forties. White or grey hair occurs when the follicle stops producing melanin pigments. Though the process can’t be prevented, beauty giants are locked in a science lab race to produce wonder pills and potions to stop grey hair – permanently. More than two thirds of the female population (67%) aged between 26-60 years claim they’d never want to be seen with grey hair, according to a survey by home hair colour brand Live Salon Style. “When hair starts to grey, it’s one of the biggest challenges for women both physically and emotionally,” says Norris Ogario, founder and creative director of Ogario Hair Salon. “Women can experience a lack of

packing, well, at least for four to six confidence but also struggle with weeks. colour and texture changes too. Grey hair is usually thicker and less shiny, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t still have amazing hair and be proud of your silver tresses.” Not everyone wants to spend six weeks religiously sitting in the hair colourist’s chair. With grey being the fashion shade du jour, you can wear your natural colour with confidence and even enhance it. “Be confident in your look and make more of a statement with your cut, so you don’t appear out of date or mumsy,” advises Denise McAdam, celebrity hairdresser and ambassador for Nurture Replenish haircare. “White hair looks brilliant in a short, edgy style, or a fabulous sharp bob.” A subtle or extreme change in texture isn’t uncommon during the grey takeover. If your hair’s feeling wiry, it’s down to the fact that greys are often courser than pigmented hair, which can make it trickier to colour. Forget lines and wrinkles. The majority of women who want to mask their grey hair completely, do so because they believe it to be one of the most obvious signs of ageing. If you can handle the maintenance, an all-over colour will send greys

Here for the beer

oung, blonde and female, Anna Schwäble isn’t your stereotypical beer brewer. But the 26-year-old from Bavaria is in charge of Bath’s newest brewery, the James Street Brewery in the Bath Brewhouse on James Street West and from the microbrewery inside the pub Anna creates the Brewhouse’s three house brews, Emperor, Gladiator and Maximus. It was her grandfather who inspired Anna to pursue a career in brewing. “He was really into beers,” said Anna. “He never brewed, but he was a big fan.

10 THE WEEKEND

“When I finished school I went to Australia for a year and worked in some bars, but I wasn’t really sure what to do next. “My grandfather said: ‘You can never go wrong with beer’ so that’s when I decided that I would become a brewer.” Anna enrolled in brewing college and became an apprentice in a brewery run by a Bavarian monastery where part of her salary was paid in beer. “We got 70 litres of beer every month,” said Anna. “That’s really a lot. I think that before that it used to be 140 though! “I shared it with my grandfather so he was very happy.” She graduated with a degree in brewing – surely a student’s dream qualification –

and came to the UK almost three years ago and has been the brewer at the Brewhouse since it opened in the autumn. Since then she has been working on perfecting the brews which are already proving to be a big hit with customers. “When I started the head brewer from our sister pubs gave me some recipes to start with, but I have changed them already,” she smiled. “Inventing a brew is not really that difficult, you just do some maths with the volume of malt and water. “There are so many hops here to choose from, and the yeast that you choose makes a difference too. “You can never do anything wrong with beer as long as you don’t sour it. “We make three brews here. The Emperor is a pale ale made from hops from the US, and it is a different yeast type from the other two. It is more citric in taste. It is our best seller, it sells double the amount of the others. “Gladiator is an amber colour and more of a traditional British bitter and Maximus is the strongest which is how it got its name. “It’s very dark and has a more malty

note.” Anna’s home country of Germany has a rich heritage in beer, but she says she enjoys the more open minded British approach to brewing. “It is more innovative and experimental here. You can use flavours and things which would not be allowed in Germany,” she said. Although the process of brewing might not cause Anna any difficulties, it’s not always easy being a female in such a male dominated industry. “There were only a couple of other girls on my course. There are not many women in the industry. “Sometimes it can be difficult – if you assert yourself as a woman then the men do not always like it, but if you act like a helpless little girl then they think you can’t do anything. “I’m part of something called Project Venus, which is a group of women brewers from all over the country and we meet and brew together. “In the past it was always women who brewed at home while the men went out hunting. “I don’t really know why there are not many women in the industry now.”

Beer has long been a popular drink, but it can also be a great ingredient to use in cooking. Michel Roux Jnr recently challenged contestants on BBC’s Masterchef: The Professionals to cook a beer soup. While we might not all have the Michelin-starred chef’s cooking skills, this recipe for 6X Onion Soup with Cranberry & Sage Bread from Wadworth’s is easy, a wonderful winter warmer. Method for the 6X Onion Soup: ■ Peel and thinly slice the onions and garlic, then soften them in the butter and olive oil over a low to medium heat. Stir them regularly. They are ready when they are soft, sticky, sweet and deep gold in colour. ■ Stir in a couple of tablespoons of flour, and season. Cook out for 3 or 4 mins, then gradually add beef stock and beer, whisking all the time . ■ Add the rubbed fresh thyme and bay leaves Partially cover with a lid and leave to simmer for a good 45 mins.

kh z v|{ The Walk Despite being England’s smallest city with a population of just 11 343 at the last census, there is much to catch the eye in Wells. Dominating the place is the majestic cathedral, with its stunning west front noted for its intricate stone carvings of various ecclesiastical figures. Alongside stands the moated Bishop’s Palace, where the swans literally do ring a bell as feeding time approaches, as well as Vicars’ Close. Dating from the mid-14th century, this is the oldest surviving residential street in Europe, with a perfect symmetry in all of its dwellings. There is also the thriving market, surrounded by any number of independent shops, the perfect place for some festive shopping. Away from the city, the walk explores Torhill Wood, now a National trust property, with surrounding open fields and meadow providing views towards Glastonbury Tor, another religious monument in this most spiritual corner of the country. This is a walk that is deliberately low on miles so as to allow plenty of time to explore all the other delights of this fine city.

Family affair for Jack the lad

Siobhan Stayt talks to Jack Whitehall who is coming to Bath to launch a new book which shows family life through the eyes of two generations

S

howbusiness runs in the Whitehall family, so it is perhaps not surprising that for his latest venture comedian Jack decided to pair up with his acting agent father Michael. The duo have penned a new memoir called Him & Me and are also starring in their own comedy show Backchat. Interestingly, they wrote the book during a five-day stint holed up in the Royal Crescent Hotel, in Bath. Jack said the city was his father’s first choice when he suggested getting away from the distractions of London. “When I was writing (the sit-com) Bad Education I went to stay at a friend’s house in Grenada, so I suggested to dad that maybe I could ask around and see if I could wangle something,” he said. “Of course he started grumbling, saying he didn’t want to go abroad, and said “Let’s go to Bath”. “So we checked into the Royal Crescent for five days, writing intensely and buying lots of drinks

from the minibar, which was very expensive, but amazing.” The result of their efforts is a humorous look at family life, growing up in the

Whitehall household, through the eyes of two generations. The pair have also recently launched their new BBC3 comedy show Backchat and Jack he was really enjoying working with his dad. “It is exactly as stressful as it sounds, exactly as fraught with problems. “But that’s not to say it isn’t fun.” He added: “When we were writing the book, we both wrote bits and edited each other and then brought it all together. “As with all writing, it was really nice to have a sounding board.” Jack admitted there was a worry that the book would contain lots of “in jokes” that only family members would find funny. But, he said he hoped the end result would resonate with people from all walks of life. “Of course, we are ridiculously middle-class, so there are lots of first-world problems, but I think a lot of it is quite relatable. “It has all those generic themes about parents being embarrassing, people losing their temper on holiday, which I think most people have experienced.” Jack is a rising star of the comedy world, having caught the public’s attention back in 2008 when he hosted the E4 show Big Brother’s Big Mouth. Since then he has become a regular on panel shows such as 8 Out of 10 Cats and A League of Their Own, as well as taking starring roles in successful sit-coms Fresh Meat and the self-penned Bad Education. His comedy persona is inextricably linked with his middle class upbringing, and he said at this stage he wasn’t too concerned with being typecast. “Of course I’d love to play something different one day, but it is all about finding new challenges. “No-one wants to be typecast, but you just have to wait for the right job and be careful about what you do.” Michael’s previous life as an acting agent (his clients included Judi Dench and Colin Firth) has meant he has been able to help his son through the

excitements and pitfalls of life in the public eye. Jack said: “He is definitely better placed to guide me, than say if he was a librarian. “But even so, it has changed quite rapidly - I don’t think Nigel Havers has a Twitter account!” The pair are now looking forward to returning to Bath next month, to launch Him & Me at the Pavilion. And Jack said fans could expect something a bit more exciting than the usual style of book readings. He said: “When you think of book readings, you think of them as being quite dry, so I really want to give this more of a

sense of one of my stand-up shows. “So, there will be some stuff from my live shows, obviously some bits from the new tv show. “To be honest our live shows can be a bit like anarchy, there is always the risk it could go wrong because my dad is a very, very bad-tempered person. “It should be a bit more fun than just reading from a book.” Jack and Michael Whitehall will be at Bath Pavilion on Saturday, December 7, at 7.30pm for an 8pm start. Tickets can be bought by phoning 01225 428111 or emailing bath@toppingbooks.co.uk.

Haunting horror returns to the Theatre Royal

A

ghost story in winter is the perfect seasonal treat, and the most chilling of them all returns to Bath next week when The Woman in Black plays at the Theatre Royal. Now in its 24th year in the West End and paying its eighth visit to the Theatre Royal in Bath, this uniquely nerve-jangling play stars Stuart Fox as Arthur Kipps and Gwynfor Jones as The Actor. Proud and solitary, Eel Marsh House surveys the windswept reaches of the salt marshes beyond Nine Lives Causeway. Arthur Kipps, a junior solicitor, is summoned to attend the funeral of Mrs Alice Drablow, the house’s sole inhabitant, unaware of the tragic secrets which lie hidden behind the shuttered windows. It is not until he glimpses a wasted young woman, dressed all in black at the funeral, that a creeping sense of unease begins to take hold. This feeling is deepened by the reluctance of the locals to talk of the woman in black – and her terrible purpose. Years later, as an old man, Kipps recounts his experiences to an actor in a desperate attempt to exorcise the curse that he believes has been cast over him and his family. As the two men act out the solicitor’s experiences on Eel Marsh all those years ago, the border between make believe and reality begins to blur and the flesh begins to creep as the past comes to life. Stephen Mallatratt’s brilliantly effective adaptation of Susan Hill’s best-selling novel combines the power and intensity of live theatre with a cinematic quality inspired by the world of film noir.

26 THE WEEKEND

It is a formula that provides audiences with an evening of unremitting drama and sheer theatricality as they are transported into a chilling and ghostly world. Over seven million people have lived to tell the tale of one of the most terrifying theatre events ever staged. The Woman in Black was first performed at the Theatre-By-The-Sea in Scarborough in 1987 to rave reviews. It opened in the West End in 1989 where it has enjoyed continued success ever since. As well as enjoying major national tours, it is now the longest running show ever to be staged at London’s Fortune Theatre. The Woman in Black reached an even wider audience last year with the release of a major motion picture, starring Daniel Radcliffe, which became the highest grossing British horror film in 20 years.

Competition

This week we have two tickets to give away to watch The Woman in Black on Monday, December 2 at 7.30pm to give away. Just answer the following question, put your answer on a postcard with your name and telephone number and send it to The Woman in Black Competition, The Bath Chronicle, Westpoint, James Street West, Bath BA1 2DA. The first correct answer out of the hat first thing on Monday morning will get the tickets for that night’s show. The question is: who wrote The Woman in Black?

Mixing music and motherhood

S

inger and songwriter Thea Gilmore will be showcasing tracks from her acclaimed new album, Regardless, at Bath’s Komedia on Wednesday, December 4. Regardless is Thea’s 14th album and the biggest of her career – a Radio 2 album of the week, it features a Radio 2 Single of the Week and two Radio 2 playlisted singles. Still aged only 33, Gilmore is nothing but prolific, but Regardless grew out of an enforced hiatus. In July 2011 Gilmore gave birth to her second son, literally two days away from completing mixes to her Sandy Denny collaboration Don’t Stop Singing. The timing could hardly have been better, nor could excitement and anticipation have run higher. But after serious complications the birth was a traumatic one, and it heralded an intense and personally devastating few months for the singer-songwriter. Her newborn son’s early months were beset with health issues while Gilmore herself entered a period of physical illness followed by a mental descent as post-natal depression set in. Says Gilmore: “I’ve encountered bouts of depression in the past. But nothing prepared me for the overwhelming nature of this”. Ironically, Gilmore’s stock had seldom been higher – Don’t Stop Singing had received plaudits across the board, the single London was inescapable on the radio. But the reality was an exhausting and often crippling battle back to physical and mental health. After a few months, with a supreme effort and encouragement from family and friends she found the strength to write her first song in well over a year. Taking in the combination of love, wonder and helplessness a mother feels watching her children heading out into the world, it set the tone – and set the bar high – for what would become one the most direct, personal collection of songs yet in Gilmore’s already weighty catalogue. “When you write as much as I do, it would be easy to get stuck in a rut and end up putting out the same album. This experience helped me relearn what I do,” say Gilmore. “I once had a conversation with a friend about a female artist who had had kids ... he thought the album she released subsequently sounded as if she thought she was the only woman ever to go through the birth experience. “I never wanted Regardless to come across like that. For me, these are songs about being the custodian of somebody, but also about the process of letting go.” She tours tirelessly, and now takes the children on the road too. “Like any working parent, it’s a balancing act,” she says. “I feel very lucky that I can do both, but there’s always a lot of guilt involved. I think it’s a good learning experience for them, but they do have a fairly lateral take on normality ... My older son grew up thinking that hanging out with Mike Scott and Bruce Springsteen, and spending weeks on a tour bus going round the US was just routine pre-school experience.” Tickets cost £17.50 in advance.

The outstanding Cardinall’s Musick and Andrew Carwood contrast sacred music from the French Baroque tradition with motets by Bach and his German predecessor Heinrich Schutz. “The Academy of Ancient Music and Richard Tognetti present concertos by Bach alongside brilliant concertos by Vivaldi and some more rarely heard works written for the famous Dresden court orchestra.” The other events are devoted entirely to Bach. Bath book for Christmas

N

ovelist Veronica Henry loves Bath – and particularly at Christmas time. So, when she started to write a new romantic novel she decided to sprinkle a bit of Christmas magic across the Georgian Streets of Bath. Although Veronica now lives in North Devon she went to school at the Royal High in Bath. Her novel Christmas at the Crescent has just been published by Orion as an ebook at £1.99. Veronica says: “Bath has got it all at Christmas: the city looks spectacular all lit up, and as well as a wonderful atmosphere, it has a fabulous selection of shops, enticing bars and restaurants, and of course the infamous Christmas market. Everyone goes all out to

capture the Yuletide spirit, and it's impossible not to get swept away by the magic.”

www.bathchronicle.co.uk

In her book behind the Georgian sweep of Pelham Crescent in Bath everyone is getting ready for Christmas. At Number 14 Josie Ballard is up to her ears in brandy, raisens and cherries as she battles to make 40 Christmas puddings to see at Bath Christmas Market. Ever since Giles walked out the day their baby was born Josie has had to work twice as hard to make ends meet. Sacrificing a career as a chef, her famous steamed puddings keep her and her baby boy titus afloat. Almost. So when in the middle of Stir Up Sunday a new neighbour in the crescent compalins about the noise Titus is making, Josie gives him a basinful. Giles, meanwhile, is finding life in the fast lane with his uber-glamorous new girlfreined Rebecca a bit draining. With one party blurring into another he is now wondering if he hasn’t made a terrible mistake abandoning Josie and his child. Isn’t it time he grew up his mother asks and Giles is starting to agree. So when he discovers Josie has a handsome new neighbour Giles decides it’s time to step up his parental dueties. Christmas has just got very complicated. Film fest in full swing This week the programming team at the Bath Film Festival have chosen their Super 8, the must-see titles at this year’s festival which opened earlier this week and which runs until December 8. Pussy Riot – A Punk Prayer: An eye opening doc looking at the lives of the young women who rose to fame for punk stunts and then for the punitive two year sentence Putin’s Russia imposed on them. A considerate film which includes both sides of the story. Made all the more fascinating by the presence of Mike Lerner, the film’s Director. At the Chapel Arts. Channeling: High octane thriller/ sci fi set in the future, where people broadcast their lives live online via contact lens cameras – the more dangerous your life, the higher your ratings. Harking back to film noir, it beautifully portrays a world of exhibition and voyeurism. At the Masonic Hall. Kauwboy: Little Theatre This Dutch entry for Best Foreign Film at the 2014 Oscars will become a family favourite. “Fast-paced, impulsive

and immersive” says Jennie Kermode. Young & Beautiful/Jeune et Jolie: “François Ozon's new film is a luxurious fantasy of a young girl's flowering” says Peter Bradshaw. Nominated for the Palme D;Or, this mesmerizing film spends a year in the life of a beautiful 17-year old girl who sells her body to rich older men. At the Little Theatre. Sixteen: We are thrilled to be screening this film from local director, Rob Brown. Jumah was a child soldier in the Congo, now living in London he is turning 16 and wrestling with his past and his present. Rob Brown will be joining us for Q&As at the end of the screening. At the Chapel Arts For Those In Peril: “A striking film form a valuable new talent” says The Guardian. “A beautiful, affecting film, part fable, part poem: A full week after first viewing, I find myself still sifting through montage images that linger in the mind like a half-remembered

dream” says Mark Kermode. Set on a remote Scottish the film follows the story of a boy who as sole survivor of a ship wreck, becomes the Jonah of his villiage. At the Little Theatre. Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom: The wonderful Idris Elba (The Wire) stars as Nelson Mandela in this epic film about his life, from activist to national leader and international inspiration. At the Little Theatre. We Are The Best/ Vi är bäst!: Winner of the Audience Award at the Reykjavik International Film Festival, this is a film for everyone who has ever been 13, and is already being widely hailed as a future classic. “Punk may well be dead, but in the insubordination of adolescence it will remain alive forever, as Moodysson's delightful crowdpleaser so enjoyably proves” said Cinevue. At the Little Theatre. Visit www.bathfilmfestival.org.uk for further information.
