_lsjvtl The clocks have gone back and winter is well and truly on the way. But while November can be quite a dreary month, there’s plenty going on to brighten your week. Tuesday is Bonfire Night, and on Saturday there will be the annual charity firework display taking place on the Rec. Firework displays are one of those wonderful things that bring generations together. From toddlers, to teenagers, parents and grandparents - whatever your age I don’t think the magic of watching the colourful explosions ever really fades, and there’s always
EDITORIAL Lynne Fernquest such a lovely atmosphere in the city that night too with so many people turning out to enjoy the display. What might be the biggest nights in Bath’s calendar is coming up soon too. On November 12 Mary Berry will be coming to switch on the Christmas lights, and that really will mark the start of the festive season. To mark the occasion we’ll be producing a special bumper edition of The Weekend next week. Make sure you don’t miss it!

uterwear has been given a serious injection of cool this season. Lisa Haynes wraps up the most stylish ways to keep warm. If there’s one wardrobe staple for which impulse buys should be banned, it’s the
winter coat. A cosy cover-up is worth its weight in gold for the sheer amount of style impact it delivers on a day-to-day basis, so it pays to invest wisely. Let’s face it, no matter what you’re wearing underneath, it will always be the first thing that anyone looks at. Take cover with the styles to covet this winter. ■ Minimalist mode: The catwalk coat mood of this season is stripped back and chic with slightly mannish undertones. Good news when it comes to wardrobe endurance because the simpler the coat, the more likely it is to have a shelf life beyond one season. If the minimalist coat approach is for you, choose a timeless, neutral hue like black, navy, grey or camel. ■ Bright beauty: A coloured coat that packs a punch is just the antidote to dark, wintry nights. Pick your favourite hue from jewel tone indigos and emeralds, through to icy pastel pinks and mints. Ensure the shade takes centre stage by cutting down on fussy extra detailing like belts, oversized buttons and multiple pockets. Pink is the hottest hue of the season and your clothes will come up smelling of roses
THE WEEKEND www.bathchronicle.co.uk
if you wear the must-have blush against navy or grey clothing. ■ Statement maker: Animal prints are big news for this season but, for a quirky twist on traditional leopard, go wild and try a snow leopard colourway. Not just for Dalmatian dogs and Cruella de Vil – black on white spots is the go-to print this winter but keep the dots small, subtle and scattered so you don’t look like a cartoon character. For a more geometric look, select tartan-inspired or oversized checks to wow. If you can’t resist an element of costume drama, try embellished or embroidered coats in a straight cut and team with jeans and jumpers by day and LBDs for after-dark. ■ Texture clash: All-over faux furs are fine for the very depths of winter but beyond that they seem a touch OTT. Instead, look to fur accents for a more wearable autumn to spring overcoat. Contrasting textures are just the ticket, with statement panels of shearling or faux fur cosied up against wool or leather. If you prefer something more traditional, look for a covering of faux fur on lapels for the snug factor. ■ Ankle skimmers: Add some fairytale drama to your walk with a maxi coat, or an overcoat that brushes your shins. Not only will it offer extra snugness when temperatures plummet, it’s long-length shape can streamline your figure. The taller you are, the longer your coat can be but petites under 5ft 5in should avoid the risk of looking swamped. All-black can look too severe, so try a variation like dark grey or navy for a softer, more wearable approach.

Beautiful boudoir
C
hilly autumn days make us yearn to be cosy and warm, and the bedroom’s the ideal place to conjure a snug sanctuary in your home, says designer Gabrielle Fagan. After all, this is the space where we retreat not merely to sleep, but to recharge, relax and rest. And to be truly successful, it should reflect our taste in its furniture and pander to our desire for comfort and pampering in its furnishings. Four experts reveal their bedroom secrets so you can create a beautiful boudoir of your own. Touch-me texture “A great bedroom should feel like a sanctuary, which is aesthetically pleasing yet functional, and should contain thoughtfully selected pieces that mirror your personality,” says Julie Paul, head of interior design at OKA. Style tips: Aim for a mix of great textures and colours, and always include stand-out pieces, like a striking lamp or a

bright throw. Trends: Rich colours and metallics will star, she says, and all it takes is a new velvet throw or piece of furniture to update a room. Best buys: Hutton Velvet 2-seater sofa in damson, £1,650; Velvet Cushion Cover, £45, navy Faux Mohair Throw, £39; Antler Metal Table Lamp, £99, with cream Empire Drum Lampshade, £59, OKA. Light and shade “The most important piece of furniture in any bedroom is obviously the bed, and it should take centre stage, so always get the largest one you can accommodate,” says Wayne Clarke, creative director for And So To Bed. Style tips: Luxury and layering are essential, he says, and suggests white linen bedding with a high thread cotton count, silk bedcovers and cashmere or fox fur throws. Trends: Wayne recommends rich berry colours and a combination of interesting textures Best buys: Alpaca Throw, from £120;

Cushion, £55; Handel bed, from £2,200 for a king size, And So To Bed. Industrial chic “Calm, warmth and serenity are essential for a great bedroom,” says Claire Hornby, creative stylist for Barker & Stonehouse. Style tips: If you have a small bedroom, she advises, avoid a feature wall or patterned paper, use a pale colour for the floor, and have a large mirror to reflect light. Trends: Coral, taupe and grey, with accents of teal greens, will feature strongly this season, and in bedrooms there’s a choice of Hotel Luxe or classic English country house featuring tweeds, linens and washed-out woods. Best buys: Vienna High End Bedframe, from £839; Aquilla Sequinned Cushion, £39.95; industrial-style Thenadier Clock, £40, Barker & Stonehouse. Serene sanctuary “A bedroom must be a haven of tranquility and a place to escape at the end of the day, which means that
well-designed storage is vital,” says Wendy Morris Lea, product designer at John Lewis of Hungerford. Style tips: Mixing old pieces with newer ones in varied grey tones has been popular, and if this is used with pink hues, it will give a feminine feel to a room. Trends: Wendy predicts a brighter, fresher colour palette with turquoise and shades of yellow will star next year, creating an inspiring new look. Best buys: The new fitted bedroom furniture collection starts from £5,000, and a free-standing Vanity Unit, from £1,600, John Lewis of Hungerford. :: Bedroom destinations And So To Bed: 0808 144 4343/www.andsotobed.co.uk Barker & Stonehouse: 0333 355 9369/www.barkerandstonehouse.co.uk Bedeck: 0845 6030 861/www.bedeck.com John Lewis of Hungerford: 0870 8888 123/www.john-lewis.co.uk OKA: 0844 815 7380/www.okadirect.com

arco Pierre White is not a chef. At least not any more he tells me. And he doesn’t consider himself a businessman either, despite his increasingly large portfolio of country inns and pubs which are marketed under the Wheeler’s of St James brand – the latest addition to which is the Rudloe Arms at Corsham, which is the ninth in the family. “I’m just Marco,” he says with a shrug. But when you’re talking about Marco Pierre White, the man who has been billed as the first-ever celebrity chef and the youngest to be awarded three Michelin stars, I’m not sure there’s any “just” about it. The walls of the Rudloe Arms confirm my instinct. Almost everywhere you look there’s pictures of Marco; some caricatures, some of him in chef’s whites at various stages of his career and others show him with celebrity friends. It’s not exactly the average collection of family snaps. The display isn’t a mark of arrogance however, almost the opposite in fact. Marco doesn’t hang them on the walls of his home because “it’s too narcissistic.” It’s simply that he has been given them over the years and feels that they deserve a good home. Marco is very much the collector, and the Rudloe Arms is an excuse for him to indulge his passion for the obscure. The bar/games room is filled with vintage pool tables and a table football, signs scream Aloha in lightbulbs that give off almost as much heat as they do light, giant model aeroplanes hang from the ceiling and on the wall there’s a glowing red smiling face surrounded in daisies. A couple of Michelin men are dotted around, “so we have a Michelin inspection every day,” jokes Marco. During our lunch he asks the staff to unpack the most recent delivery, two barber’s shop candy poles that he has bought from America. “They’re bigger than I expected,” he admits. “But I think they’ll look great.” While some names as big as Marco might simply put their name to something and then hand the responsibility to someone else, Marco is quite the opposite, insisting on being involved in
10 THE WEEKEND www.bathchronicle.co.uk
everything and giving everywhere a “Marco Makeover.” The result is a place with real personality. There’s no doubt that Marco is a man who knows exactly what he wants. He has a presence – when he walks in a room, you know it, and he can command a conversation effortlessly, keeping his companions enthralled, occasionally stopping abruptly for a cigarette break. But while on screen he can often come across as arrogant, abrasive even, in person he’s softer, more jovial – although no less intense – and there are occasionally glimpses of vulnerability that don’t come across on television. The food is proper pub food – albeit done exceptionally well – think pork belly, cottage pie, trifle and rice pudding. “I like recognisable puddings,” says Marco. “Not dessert.” Marco recruits the chefs who work for him, but he no longer spends time in the professional kitchen himself and looks horrified when I ask if he ever misses it. ”Never!” he says. “It’s a young man’s game.” And although Marco might be involved in every aspect of the brand, there’s no suggestion that diners will be tasting his handiwork. “I never wanted to be one of those chefs who lives a lie,” he says. “People go to restaurants because they want that chef cooking for them, and if you are going to charge high prices then they should be able to expect that. “Can you imagine if you went to an Elton John concert and his number two came out? It’s the same thing as far as I’m concerned.”

Apple crumble comfort food November 5 might be all about fireworks and flames, but don’t forget the food to go with them. “Remember, remember, the fifth of November. Gunpowder, treason and plot.” As the old rhyme goes, there is no reason why Guy Fawkes’s plan to blow up the Houses Of Parliament should ever be forgotten. And we haven’t. It might have happened in 1605 but, year after year, people all over the country go out, whatever the weather, to watch bonfires and firework displays. Judging by the number of food traditions associated with the event, it’s not just rockets, Catherine wheels and sparklers that keep people coming

back for more. By the time November comes around, the clocks have gone back and the nights have drawn in. The weather has normally taken a turn for the worse, too, providing the perfect excuse to wrap up in a scarf, hat and gloves, and warm up with some delicious food. If you’re heading to a display, there’ll no doubt be burger vans and hot dog stalls, the sweet onion smell filling the air across the field, making them extra irresistible. Toffee apples are another traditional bonfire night treat. Try this recipe for Baked Apple and Toffee Crumble, a warm, comforting pudding that will bring back all those familiar flavours.

kh z v|{ The Walk Longbridge Deverill is somewhat spoiled by the passing traffic on the A350 but look around and there is much to catch the eye. Pevsner was taken with Longbridge House – now a nursing home, as well as the Thynne Almshouses and the adjoining church dedicated to St Peter and St Paul. Today’s visitor will no doubt find the George Inn equally appealing, especially if blessed with a bright autumnal day when the garden alongside a tributary stream of the Wylye will prove hard to resist. Away from the village, the walk explores Southleigh Woods, once part of the much larger Selwood Forest. Along with Larch and Grand Fir, Norway Spruce and Western Red Cedar, look out for the rather grand Wellingtonias with their spongy red bark. Mature specimens can reach a height of some 250 feet.

General manager, David Thornycroft, is heading up the warm and friendly front of house team, while Marco’s head chef, Timothy Brendish, will be delivering the exceptional standard and consistency you’d expect from an MPW establishment. David said: “We have a great team on board and we’ve all worked so hard
with Marco over the past few months to put the heart and soul back into Rudloe and our regular guests and locals have given us such fabulous support throughout the renovation. “This hotel will suit everyone – it’s obviously a great location and a popular wedding venue, but now it’s a busy local restaurant, a vibrant corporate weekday hangout and a perfect weekend retreat for those wanting a bit of simple luxury and relaxation and we look forward to welcoming all!” ■ Have you hosted an event you would like featured in The Weekend? City songbird adjusts to a life in the limelight
A
year ago you probably hadn’t heard of Gabrielle Aplin. But last Christmas the talented songstress from Bath was thrust into the limelight when her version of The Power of Love was used in John Lewis’ Christmas advertising campaign, beaming her delicate tones into homes all over the country. Last December, the song topped the singles charts, but Gabrielle’s success didn’t stop there. Her debut album, English Rain, reached number two on the album charts and she can also count to her credit seven UK sell-out tours, performances at some of the UKs biggest festivals and more than 20 million views on YouTube. An amazing achievement for a relative unknown. “The last year has been pretty mental,” says Gabrielle as she prepares for her English Rain tour, which will see her returning to the South West for a gig at Bristol’s O2 Academy on November 8. “But it has been great. I’m so happy with everything I have achieved.” And so she should be – she’s come a long way from the girl who taught herself to play piano and guitar and started out by recording songs in her bedroom. “Getting the number one was amazing,” she says. “The Power of Love had been out for a few weeks, and it just came out of the blue.” She might be a rising star on the music scene but Gabrielle has kept her feet firmly on the ground and her humility makes her even more charming and likeable. “I don’t think of myself as being famous at all,” she says. “My life is very normal. Nothing has really changed if I’m honest. I still see my friends and my family all the time. “I have the perfect balance of everything.” Gabrielle recently celebrated her 21st birthday, but while other starlets in her shoes might have hit a swanky London club for a night of champagne-fuelled debauchery, she opted for something more low key. “I actually had a day off,” she laughs. “It was really nice.” Gabrielle’s English Rain tour will be a culmination of a year of hard work for the former City of Bath College student. “I’m really looking forward to it,” she says. “I think it’s going to be great. “I love my band, we’re all friends, so it’s going to feel like going on a little holiday. “I love playing in Bath and Bristol, the crowds there are always really good.” There’s a disarming honesty about Gabrielle. Despite the media attention she has gained over the past 12 months when she speaks, nothing feels rehearsed or
24 THE WEEKEND www.bathchronicle.co.uk
contrived. And his honesty is reflected in her songwriting. And while it might have been a cover version that put her in the public eye, she is a talented songwriter and English Rain is almost entirely her own work. “I just write about what I know and people my age can relate to it,” she says. “The older the get, the more I will have to write about. “I think I’m improving all the time. “The John Lewis advert was great though because it enabled me to get out to an audience I wouldn’t have been able to reach otherwise.” Although from the outside it may appear as if Gabrielle has had a meteoric rise to fame, in fact her success is the result of years of writing and gigging and posting her songs on YouTube. At age 17, she quit sixth form, left Bath and moved to London to pursue her dream of getting noticed and continually creating. She started her own record label and continued posting online, gathering fans along the way, until signing to Parlophone last year. “It’s all been very gradual,” she says. “it has never felt like hard work because it has happened over a long period of time. “Now I just feel like I’m doing what I should be doing.”

Nation’s favourites star at city theatre
T
wo of Britain’s best loved actors, Felicity Kendal and Simon Callow join forces to star in the bittersweet classic Chin-Chin, playing two very different people who have one thing in common – the affair that exists between their spouses. Written by François Billetdoux and directed by Michael Rudman, this timeless and touching play about love and loss visits the Theatre Royal Bath next week Monday to Saturday. Set in 1950s Paris, Chin-Chin tells of doctor’s wife Pamela Pusey-Picq and passionate Italian Cesareo Grimaldi who meet in a café to discuss the affair which their respective spouses are conducting. The often comical, and ultimately disastrous, fall-out from the affair results in consequences which the jilted couple cannot begin to imagine when they first rendezvous to set the world to rights and

As the drinks flow and special connections are forged out of their mutually undesirable circumstances, the unlikely pair soon realise that they will leave the ‘city of love’ with more than they had bargained for. 30 THE WEEKEND
his year’s Bath Mozartfest is a stunning showcase of some of the world’s best-loved classical music married to the appearance of many of the world’s greatest classical musicians. The highlight of this year’s festival, which opens on Friday, November 8, is a performance on the Saturday evening of Handel’s rarely performed opera Jephtha with The Sixteen and a cast of front-rank soloists, including counter tenor Robin Blaze all conducted by Harry Christophers. This was Handel’s last oratorio and arguably his finest. This will be the first of just two performances, the second taking place in London in the New Year. Although Mozart’s music plays a central role in the festival there are good things from many other composers too. The festival opens with two performances from the internationally acclaimed Takacs Quartet, newly appointed as associate artists of Wigmore Hall in London. The first notes will be from one of Mozart’s
www.bathchronicle.co.uk
string quartets dedicated to his friend Haydn, after which Haydn proclaimed him “the greatest composer known to me”. Also on the agenda and in total contrast are quartets from Janacek and Dvorak. The Takacs then appears again at the Assembly Rooms on Saturday morning with more Mozart and some Beethoven and Smetana. On Saturday afternoon pianist Alfred Brendel, who is now retired from the concert platform, is in conversation with Professor Jonathan Cross. Sunday’s concert features violinist Anthony Marwood and pianist Aleksandar Madzar playing Schumann, Mozart and Beethoven. Lunchtime concerts are a big feature of the Mozartfest, where it is possible to see and hear some of the world’s finest up-and-coming young musicians, those that will become the big names of tomorrow. The season opens with rising stars and previous visitors to Bath cellist Leonard Elschenbroich and pianist Wu Qian on Monday

At lunchtime on Monday soprano Elizabeth Watts teams up with pianist Roger Vignoles to sing a wide arrangement of songs, from not only Mozart but also Salieri, Liszt and Schubert. Tuesday night sees the Trio Wanderer at the Assembly Rooms. Here are three outstanding French musicians playing works by Mozart, Ravel and Schubert. Wednesday’s rising star is guitarist Xuefei Yang, a sensation at a recent Edinburgh International Festival with works by Bach, Sor, Schugert, Paganini and others. In the evening are the Schubert Ensemble with works by Mahler, Dvorak and Schubert and on Thursday lunchtime there is the Heath Quartet with works by Mozart and Mendelssohn. The big concert on Thursday is the
Cardinall’s Musick playing by candlight at St Mary’s Bathwick with an all-English programme of music by Tallis, Byrd and Britten. Andras Schiff is at the Assembly Rooms on Friday night with piano works by Beethoven, while the Pavel Haas Quartet, which was to have performed at the mid-morning concert on Saturday, has pulled out. The Kertavo Quartet has been booked in its place but Matthew Hunt, clarinettist is still appearing and will still be performing the Brahms Clarinet Quintet in B minor. The festival comes to a close on Saturday with a performance by The Hallé with conductors Sir Mark Elder and Jamie Phillips at the Forum. The star soloist at the Forum concert is violinist Alina Ibragimova who will be performing the Mendelssohn Violin concerto in E Minor. Book traces the hertiage of tiles Bronwyn Williams-Ellis, from Walcot Street in Bath, has had her work selected for a new guide to the history of art on tiles, 5,000 Years of Tiles published by the British Museum. The book chronicles tile design and Bronwyn has been recognised as one of the leading contemporary designers in this field. “It is very exciting to get this kind of recognition for my work and particularly to be in such good company – the likes of Eduardo Nery and Paul Scott,” says Bronwyn. “It’s fantastic to be able to add in some small way to such a history.” Bronwyn is an artist who works independently making clay panels – as in the example illustrated – but also designing and making tiles to Fashion Museum Exhibition, 50 Fabulous Frocks, 10.30am-5pm daily, to Sun Jan 5, 2014. Her lively and fluid art work which covers a wide range of content is in public and private collections and her tiles have been especially commissioned for all sorts of places, from hospitals and hotels. Tiles have always been and still are an important, exciting and affordable way to bring unique and interesting design into the home and public spaces. This substantial book is the first comprehensive guide to this unique art form by the British Museum in 40 years and traces the heritage of tile design forward from Ancient Mesopotamia and Egypt right through to contemporary tile makers and designers. ecorated war hero, million-selling author, weapons consultant, motivational speaker, company director … former SAS commander Andy McNab, 53, hasn’t wasted a second since he escaped from imprisonment and torture in Iraq back in 1991. His account of the mission formed his first book Bravo Two Zero, later made into a TV series starring Sean Bean, and the biggest-selling war book of all time. Since then he has written three other novels on life in the SAS, 14 novels featuring his alter ego Nick Stone, teenage fiction and sold a staggering 32 million books worldwide. He’s appearing at Toppings bookshop on Tuesday to talk about his new book entitled Silent Zone “It’s part of the Nick Stone series and set in Colombia and Moscow,” says Andy. “I think readers identify with the character of Nick. Once people emotionally invest in the character they want to know what goes on next. “Obviously the character is me to an extent but as the books continue the character starts to get a life of his own.” McNab was a commander of the infamous Bravo Two Zero patrol during the Gulf War. Their mission was to destroy underground communication links between Baghdad and north-west Iraq, and find and destroy mobile Scud missile launchers. But somehow the plan went wrong. So did Andy have backlash from other SAS boys when the book came out? “In the early days there was a bit of noise, but every book I write goes via

the MOD. They either say it’s okay or ask me to change it. Nothing happened until Bravo became successful. Then all the armchair generals, who have no idea what’s been going on, said it was an outrage and secrets divulged. Not true. But the publicity it got was incredible! It was even on the news. Looking back it helped. I’m now about the 37th most successful English-speaking writer of all time. “I’ve had two credible death threats over the years, so I’m just protecting myself but also protecting others. “Years ago I went to an event and there was an incendiary device. It’s about being sensible.” Andy has since used his knowledge of weapons in Hollywood as consultant on movies such as Heat and Black Hawk Down. “Robert De Niro had read Bravo Two Zero and told the director Michael Mann, who got in touch with me. I was seven months in LA for pre-production planning all the robberies. We shot it at weekends in the financial district. It was brilliant.” Through his literature Andy seeks to help the Reading Agency
36 THE WEEKEND www.bathchronicle.co.uk
He said: “When I joined the army I had the numeracy level of an 11-year-old, which is the same for many infantry recruits. They’re not thick, they just uneducated. So for years I’ve been going into military training camps and telling stories, talking about the films. Inspiring the lads and telling them to take advantage of the education the army offers. “I go out to schools, prisons, factories, juvenile detention centres. If they can improve their reading and writing skills these kids stand a better chance of getting a job. Employers want their staff to be literate.” ■ Silent Zone is out now (RRP £18.99) through Transworld Books. Andy McNab will be at Toppings bookshop on Tuesday at 7.45pm. Cost £6 entrance (£7 on the day) can be redeemed against book purchase.

The art of art revealed in film Jake Auerbach is a filmmaker of documentaries including a series on contemporary artists such as Paula Rego, Allen Jones and Lucian Freud. Jake will be at the Holburne Muesuem on Wednesday, November 20, to present a screening of The Last Art Film, a film about art – not the history of art or the academic study of art or the fluctuations in the art market or the latest exhibition but it is about what starts artists off and what keeps them going. With Michael Landy, Tracey Emin, Gary Hume, Grayson Perry, Celia Paul, Jake Tilson, Michael Craig-Martin, Allen Jones, Tom Phillips, Paula Rego, Frank Auerbach, Joe Tilson, and scores more from the last 2,000 years voiced by Jim Broadbent, Ian Holm, Lizzy McInnerny
and Tim McInnerny. Jake’s first introduction to the film industry was when he joined the Henson Organisation working on The Muppet Show and Dark Crystal. He then worked on the film Haunted, an independent feature, in the USA before returning to the UK and the editing department of the BBC. After a year in the cutting rooms working on strands such as Arena, Omnibus and Horizon he began to direct items on the arts magazine programme Review. There followed films on rock music, photography, voodoo, football and major documentaries about London, the art market and filmed portraits of artists. In 1992 he left the BBC to become an
independent producer/director, he now runs his own company Jake Auerbach Films Ltd. He is regarded as a maverick in the world of arts documentary, backing his own judgment rather than constructing films to suit broadcasters – he works, where possible, with the artists themselves, without the intervention of interpreters. Other films include Sickert’s London, Frank Auerbach: To The Studio, John Virtue: London, Rodin: The Sculptors’ View, Allen Jones: Women & Men, Paula Rego: Telling Tales and Lucian Freud: Portraits The event starts at 7.30pm and tickets cost £8. To book call 01225 388569 or visit www.holburne.org.
