These boots were made for walking

W

hatever the season a stylish but comfortable pair of boots is an invaluable part of every woman’s wardrobe. And Somerset boot brand, Seven Boot Lane, may only have had their creations on the market since June, but they are already building up a loyal following. The company, which opened its first store in Milsom Place in Bath in August was launched by husband and wife team Sebastian and Mais Edwards. It is not however Sebastian’s first foray into the world of footwear. For 15 years he worked for well known High Street brand Clarks and now he heads up the design side of the operation, while Mais brings expertise in PR and Marketing, which has helped

4

THE WEEKEND

propel the brand into the limelight. Sebastian said:“I have an absolute passion for women’s boots. I love designing them, making them and seeing how they hold a kind of superior status in a woman’s wardrobe. “We combine this passion with a very clear understanding of our target consumer, and serve up the brand with a faultless personal service that makes people feel special.” All the boots are handmade in a family-run factory in Spain with decades of experience in producing high quality footwear. “I work very closely with the craftsment at the factory to produce the boots,” said Sebastian. “We are constantly exploring and innovating in order to produce beautiful boots that will stand the test of time both in terms of quality and design. We are very hands on

and the collection tends to evolve as we work with the team in Spain. “Seven Boot Lane boots are very wearable. We recognise that people are spending a reasonable amount of money so we want to create something that they can wear day in day out and know that they will be comfortable and stylish. “We are a trend-led brand who pride ourselves on creating boots that we know our customers will love to wear. “When building the collection we ensure that we have key boot profiles covered: bikers, chelseas, cuban ankle boots, riding boots etc. “For Autumn/Winter 13 we explored the fusion of Western and biker styling, creating really feminine shapes that have a little bit of attitude to them. “Annie is currently our most popular boot. It’s unique and encapsulates everything the brand stands for –

timeless and wearable but with a touch of individuality. “We love the fusion of country and rock and roll that the Annie boot has. “We have two seasons a year – Autumn/Winter and Spring/Summer, but we do tend to add the odd style or colour here and there if we have a great idea and can’t wait. “Many of our styles will carry across the collections but we will change the colours, or the studs and buckles or the finish on the leather to create a new look for that season.” The Spring/Summer collection will start being introduced in the next few months and Sebastian has already started working on the designs for Autumn/Winter 2014. Mais said: “We spend a good deal of time planning our collection to ensure it’s commercial for our customers as well as exciting. “Once the initial design briefs and drawings are finished we spend a few weeks each season in Spain, trying out the designs and experimenting with new leathers and finishes. “The factory then produce rounds of samples until we are 100 per cent happy with the boots. Finally we tweak finishes and decide on colour palettes. “The final samples are then made by hand and we use these for sales, photography, PR and marketing. “We sell wholesale to customers five or six months before delivering boots, so we

have to wait a long time before we see them in shops!” As well as their store in Bath, Seven Boot Lane boots are sold in independent shops across the country, and from the website. But despite the growing market and fanbase for the products, at least partly due to recent coverage in big name glossy magazines like Cosmopolitan, Mais and Sebastian are keen to ensure that Seven Boot Lane remains a boutique brand. “It’s a difficult balancing act,” said Sebastian. “But part of what people like about us is that element of exclusivity. When they buy a pair of boots they know that they aren’t going to see thousands of other people wearing the same thing. “There are enough big, over-distributed labels out there and many people prefer to build a relationship with smaller boutique brands like ours. “We only make small quantities of our boots, so people know they are getting something special. “It’s also really important to our customer to be wearing a boot that has been made by hand, with love, in a small factory where things are still made the old way, by craftsmen. “I expect our collection to evolve gradually with long term trends but always be true to our philosophy: beautiful boots that are easy to wear from a brand that is easy to love.”

Keep young and beautiful

T

here’s no magic way to stop the signs of ageing, but expert dermatologist and pharmacist, Dr Howard Murad has some tips to keep your skin looking youthful. ■ Identify if you’re ageing genetically, environmentally or hormonally and treat your skin with products specific to your concerns. “If your skin is thinner, prone to breakouts, sensitive/dry around the eyes and you’re approaching or going through menopause, you’re probably experiencing Hormonal Ageing. This is when oestrogen levels decline. Look for ingredients in products like phytoestrogens, AHAs and shea butter to hydrate and stimulate cell renewal. Include more soy, wild yam and broccoli into your diet which are natural, plant-based estrogens. Look for products that contain hyaluronic acid to reduce the appearance of fine lines and dried plum extract for a youthful glow. If you’re seeing pigmentation, a rougher, drier texture, dark circles around the eyes and have spent quite a lot of time in the sun you are most likely experiencing Environmental Ageing. This is often caused by excessive sun exposure, pollution, smoking, stress, poor diet and alcohol intake. Look for products with Vitamin C to brighten your complexion and

6

THE WEEKEND

help reduce pigmentation.” ■ Eat your water! Replace one glass of water a day with eating a raw fruit or vegetable for healthier, younger-looking skin “As we age, our cells lose water. When we are babies, approximately 75% of our body is water. And think how plump and smooth a baby’s skin is! By the time we reach middle age, our body’s water content can be as low as 50%. And unfortunately skin ‘withers’ and ages alongside the declining cell water content. “ Eating foods that are rich in structured water, especially raw fruits and vegetables, will not only help your body hold onto water longer, you’ll get the added boost of important antioxidants, fibre and other nutrients.” ■ Always wear sunscreen. “Don’t ruin gorgeous skin by skipping this simple step. Regardless of the time of year, weather, or your skin type, you are exposed everyday to environmental aggressors and need protection. Remember to use a sunscreen that provides broad spectrum UVA/UVB protection.” ■ Exfoliate! “Dull, lacklustre skin can make you look older than you really are. Dullness is usually a result of a build-up of dead skin cells on your face. Exfoliation lifts the dulling film of dead skin from your skin to give you a fresh

and more youthful looking complexion.” ■ Get a good night’s rest! “Getting deep sleep is one of the best things you can do for your skin and your health. Sleep isn’t just about waking well rested, sleep has important therapeutic benefits – it may be one of your body’s most productive times for repairing every system in your body, including skin which is your largest system – and the one that displays the most dramatic signs of sleep deprivation” ■ Eat foods high in nutrients. “Snack on nutritionally dense foods, like walnuts, to get cell-hydrating omega-3 fatty acids for healthy, glowing skin. Keeping these foods on-hand will keep you from grabbing less healthy options.”

Fabulous fabrics

W

hile stitching and knitting might have once been seen as something for the older generations, thanks to the likes of Gok Wan and The Great British Sewing Bee, getting crafty is cool again. And Kate Smith, co-owner of the Makery in Bath, is on a mission to share her love of all things creative. “Sewing isn’t on the curriculum in schools any more and I think it’s so sad,” she said. “People want to learn but they just don’t know how.” From the Walcot Street workroom, the Makery runs all kinds of workshops from beginners’ sewing lessons to upholstery sessions. And Kate is keen to stress that there are classes even for the most novice seamstresses: “The whole point of the Makery is to make these

8

THE WEEKEND

creative skills as accessible to as many people as possible. We make sure there’s always something for people that don’t have a clue. “The workshops can actually be a really powerful experience. People come along and want to make something lovely but not really expecting to be able to make something they are particularly proud of. Then they are amazed by what they produce and the lift in their confidence is amazing. “We make sure that the workshops are quite short, and you make something that is pretty and useful and people walk out feeling like they have made something really special. “People get really worried in case they do something wrong but it doesn’t matter. I always compare it to when you are typing a letter. How many time to do you press delete? But it doesn’t matter – when it’s

finished no one knows. “It’s the same with sewing, it doesn’t matter if you have to go back and unpick something. At the end you will have something lovely and no one can tell how many times it went wrong.” Kate, and her husband Nigel launched the Makery four years ago, quitting their life in London and their high-powered jobs to follow a dream. “We went travelling for a year, and got married,” said Kate. “And we decided we didn’t want to be in London and we wanted to have a family and work for ourselves. We did a year’s worth of research and talked a lot about what makes us happy. “Since I was tiny I have made things and taught other people to make things and when I lived in London I had a stall on Portobello where I sold things I had made and there was a movement starting of people wanting

ovtlz

to make things themselves. ”When we looked at it, it seemed obvious that this was something we should do. All the signs were there.” So the couple opened the Makery on Walcot Street in time for Christmas in 2009 and the business has gone from strength to strength, with the workshops attracting people from up and down the country. Just a year later they opened a shop in Northumberland Place, selling crafty materials to complement the workshops. “The whole craft movement has had a lot of coverage in recent years,” said Kate. “There’s been a boom in the ‘make do and mend’ mentality off the back of the recession and making things yourself really can save you money. “You could make four pairs of curtains for the same price as getting someone else to make one for you. The trend at the moment is for people to want things that aren’t like everyone else’s. They want their possessions to have a story and be individual.” And Kate and Nigel haven’t stopped there. This month the Makery’s first book is released, filled with 30

creative projects for people to do at home, and there are also Makeaway craft kit bags in the pipeline. There are also plans to expand into bigger premises in the centre of the city to bring both elements of the business together in one place. “I’m really excited about the book,” said Kate. “It’s even being translated into Spanish! It was like the dream school project for me. It took a really long time but I loved it and it was worth it. Each page has a photo and a little introduction with a story behind the project. “Moving will be really exciting too. We want coming to a workshop to be much more of an experience and for people to feel like they are indulging themselves. “The shop will have a bit of community area with details about other local stuff that is going on, and there will be an area with sewing machines so you can come along and rent a sewing machine for £5 an hour. I’m really looking forward to it!”

Meet and eat at food festival

T

he Great Bath Feast begins next week, with a whole month of delicious delights in store all across the city. The Bath Chronicle is joining in the festivities with a special Meet the Chef Supper Club event to be held at the Kilted Chef in Kingsmead Square on October 31. Not only will diners have the chance to enjoy a fabulous five course meal prepared especially for the occasion by head chef Dougie Bonar, but they will also have the chance to meet the man himself and ask him questions about his food and his culinary career. To create the menu Dougie has drawn influence from his Scottish heritage and combined it with some of the finest produce the South West has to offer. He said: “I really wanted to create a menu to draw Scotland and the South West together and showcase some of the best produce from each region. There are some fantastic things made in this part of the world like cheese. And the pork is wonderful – it is so soft. If you cook it properly it is a lovely meat. “But then the meat from Scotland, like beef and vension is superb. We get most of our fish from Cornwall, but the salmon comes from Scotland.” Dougie describes his food as “classic flavours with a modern twist.” He said: “I am classically trained and I very much believe that if certain combinations of flavours have been being put together for years then that’s probably for a very good reason. You have to watch what you are doing. If you come out of the box too much then you start messing with things that shouldn’t be messed with. “Sometimes I look at a menu and think

that some of the combinations look ridiculous, and then you taste it and they taste ridiculous too. What you put on a plate has to complement each other and not just look good. People have to enjoy eating what we serve.” But Dougie’s food doesn’t just taste good, it looks fabulous too. “Someone said to me the other day that they had never been in a restaurant with so many people taking pictures of their food,” he said. High class cooking has been in Dougie’s family for generations. For many years his Great Grandmother was the pastry cook to the Queen Mother at Glamis Castle near Dundee, and Dougie has achieved many accolades in his own right. He won the Scottish Young Chef of the Year Award in 1984 and went on to start his own very successful restaurant in Edinburgh, Bonars Restaurant, which won Best Restaurant Newcomer in Scotland and gained 2 AA Rosettes and Dougie even cooked for Princess Anne twice whilst at Bonars. His family brought Dougie down south and he worked at the Clifton Club in Bristol before launching the Kilted Chef a year ago. “Coming to Bath was a great move for me,” he said. “I think my style of food suits Bath and I want to just keep building on the Kilted Chef’s great reputation.” Tickets for the Bath Chronicle’s Meet the Chef Supper Club cost £60 per person. A matching wine flight will be available for £25 a person, and dietary requirements can be catered for if notified in advance. Tickets for this event will be strictly limited. To find out more details and how to buy tickets call 01225 322224 or email e.dance@bathchron.co.uk.

The walk There is so much in Nunney to catch the eye that a visit to this Somerset village alone could easily fill half a day. The ruinous castle – the result of a pounding in the Civil War – has an atmosphere all of its own, whilst the church can boast the proud Dalameres, a group of five medieval figures of knights and their ladies tucked away behind the organ. When combined with this delightful walk that takes in the wooded Nunney Combe, watered by the Nunney Brook, a visit to the village could well fill the best part of a day.

ndurance cyclist Ben Rockett, 26, described what it feels like to cycle the length of the country and back again. Bath-based Mr Rockett was the guest speaker at the Bath Chronicle’s latest Get Fit For Business Event co-hosted by Withy King and Geometry PR. In 2010 Mr Rockett beat the World Record for cycling from Lands End to John O’Groats and back again, known as LEJOGLE, taking just five days, 21 hours

and eight minutes to cycle the 1,781-mile round trip. The University of Bath graduate, who is now a research psychologist, is now preparing for his next challenge – a 150mile cycle across Baffin Island in the Arctic where he will have to contend with snow, ice and sub-zero temperatures. For his latest challenge, which will raise money for Action for Children, Mr Rockett is receiving arctic training by explorer David Hempleman-Adams and a custom designed titanium bicycle has

been made by Stroud-based Qoroz, with special tyres to cope with the harsh weather conditions. More than 70 people from Bath’s business community attended the third Get Fit For Business event to hear Mr Rockett talk about his achievements. The Baffin Island Challenge is planned for April 2014.

Queen of cakes Mary Berry will be lighting up Bath this Christmas as she switches on the city’s Christmas lights. Flora Thompson finds out more

L

ike other female monarchs of our time Mary Berry, “from the moment she was born, has gracefully and firmly done things her own way.” Hailed as the queen of cakes, the honorary sovereign is undoubtedly one of Britain’s most well-known and successful cooks, teaching us to bake for 60 years. Her new autobiography, Recipe for Life, tells us her links with royalty do

not stop there. Her creations are said to be a favourite of the Duchess of Cambridge. Next month the 78-year-old, who claims the best time of her life is “now”, is set to return to her home county. She will introduce audiences in Bath to her new book, before returning on November 12 for the big switch on which will take place, as usual, on Milsom Street. The book is a touching mixture of anecdotes from her personal and working life, with a large helping of

endearing photos, offering the reader a heart-warming insight into the life behind the culinary icon. She said: “I think Bath is one of the most beautiful cities in the South West and it has always been well looked after. I have very fond memories of my time there. Born in Bath, and daughter to the city’s mayor, she said: “I grew up there and some of my relatives still live there. I had a lovely childhood and enjoyed my time at Bath High School and Bath College.

The household name was renowned for providing workable, straight forward recipes which were both popular and manageable for families. The recipes delighted dinner party guests but also provided cost effective ways of putting a wholesome meal on the table. Now she is best known as the friendly but firm judge on the Great British Bake Off. For those eagerly awaiting culinary inspiration, readers will be treated to a selection of Mary’s favourite recipes dotted throughout Recipe for Life. There is everything from a tasty, alternative tray bake to the perfect family

roast. But don’t panic – there is not a technical challenge in sight. Mary maintains the blind challenges set to Bake Off contestants are a key ingredient as to why the show has gripped a nation of viewers. She said: “It’s popular because contestants are bakers people can relate to. “Audiences feel their passion for baking and sympathise with their frustration if things go wrong. People watch it avidly. But it has got to be fun, and it always is. I thoroughly enjoy the whole process.” She feels the show encourages viewers to have confidence in themselves, realising that they can succeed at baking. She said: “It’s practical and I think it inspires people when they see baking is fairly easy. “If they are unsure the master class episode Paul and I present can help with the method – showing how to make pieces step by step which you can really get a sense of achievement from and delight the family when you put it in front of them.” She says fronting the show with fellow baker Paul Hollywood is a joy, saying they “love to laugh together.” The book’s dedication to the Berry family emulates Mary’s mantra, that cooking is the element which binds such relationships together. She said: “Cooking is, and should be, central to family life. It can bring members together. Children can learn how food is made and where food comes from. Eating sat around the table is very enjoyable and it is chance to get to know each other and hear what everyone has been up to.” She believes traditional cooking methods, and making meals from scratch, is one of the only ways to banish the

country’s growing obesity rates, and the widespread “TV dinner” culture. She said: “Obesity is certainly a problem. Knowing food and its origins is again important and a stable, healthy diet is the only remedy. It is all a matter of cooking the right thing and making sure you don’t eat too much. It is true what they say about a balanced diet – protein, dairy, vegetables, and a little cake will be sufficient.” Mary will return to Bath to take part in the Great Bath Feast, on Tuesday, October 29, where she is also set to talk about her memoir in St Mary’s Church, Bathwick St Mary, the church where she married, from 7.30pm. Tickets available from Topping and Co, www.toppingbooks.co.uk. Recipe for Life is now on sale, published by Penguin, RRP £20. The programme of events for the lights switch on will begin at 5.30pm with Mary throwing the switch at 6.30pm. A full programme of events will be published closer to the event.

My funny Valentine

C

omedy at the Theatre Royal Bath is big news this autumn with sold out notices going up on two of the biggest names in the business. Last Sunday Nina Conti’s show Dolly Mixtures sold out almost as soon as it was announced. Now it is the same with everyone’s favourite Valentine Sandi Toksvig with her show on Sunday, October 6. But the good news is that for those in the know a special selection of extra tickets are made available on the day. A limited number of standing places priced at just £4 each will go on sale at 6pm on the Sunday but they must be purchased in person at the Theatre Royal box office for cash only. Sandi, comedian, novelist, actor, broadcaster, show-off and international treasure brings her new show My Valentine to Bath after a huge success at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in August. Long-standing host of Radio Four’s News Quiz and Excess Baggage and regular QI panellist, Sandi will be performing her uniquely witty evening of stand-up, stories and fascinating facts. The show is directed by

award-winning theatre and television director and producer Pip Broughton. Born in Copenhagen, Sandi Toksvig began her comedy career at Girton College, Cambridge University, where she wrote and performed in the first all-woman show at the Footlights. Sandi performed at the first night of The Comedy Store in London and was part of the famous improvisational comedy team, The Comedy Store Players. She has appeared on a variety of TV programmes including Mock the Week, QI and Have I Got News For You. Sandi is a familiar voice for BBC Radio 4 listeners, as the chair of The News Quiz, and was the main presenter of its travel programme, Excess Baggage. Sandi’s playwriting credits include Bully Boy, which focused on PTSD among British servicemen and premiered at the newly built St James’ Theatre in London in September last year and a musical Big Night Out and Pocket Dream which transferred to the West End. Sandi became the chancellor of Portsmouth University in January 2012. Sandi is also a highly successful novelist and she is also is currently writing several commissions, both drama and comedy.

It’s a family affair for Bath band

F 30 THE WEEKEND

resh from a run of festival appearances, that included Ibiza’s Mallorca Rocks, Montreux Jazz Festival, Belgium’s Pukkelpop, and both the Reading Leeds Festivals, Bath rock-band-of-brothers The Family Rain will hit the road in support of Jake Bugg and Miles Kane this Autumn before their own extensive headline run throughout November. Having spent their youth gauging themselves on only the finest, most instantaneously undeniable rock ’n’ roll and hip hop records, Tim, Will and Ollie Walter started making music that made them feel the same things AC/DC or Dr Dre did, usually at the same time. Last year, after a decade of grafting, they made a video for their swaggering single Trust Me, I’m A Genius and labels came calling. They signed with Mercury, finding a home there within indie offshoot Bigger Splash. The single version of Trust Me… that came out at the start of January this year was the result of session at the legendary Rockfield Studios in Wales. “The main issue,” says Will Walter (who plays bass and sings and is the twin brother of drummer Tim), “was that while

it sounded amazing, it’s not 1972. Rockfield is an old studio and the recordings sound retro probably as a result.” Enter Jim Abbiss – he of Arctic Monkeys, Kasabian and Peace fame. “We just totally got each other instantly – he loved the same things that we did,” says Tim. “We had respect for things he’d done in the past, and he said he heard Massive Attack and Portishead and wanted to get that out of us. And we were more than happy to go along with it because the last thing we wanted to be was conventional.” Will said: “We’re not trying to sound remotely like anyone else but ourselves. With a lot of the songs, we were like, ‘what does that sound like? Nothing sounds like it’.” Buoyed by the excitement of the sessions, one such song that manifested itself in this way was next single Pushing It. From there, rather than patting each other on the back, The Family Rain went straight back into gigging. Tim said: “We just wanna get to the stage where we’re selling out Brixton Academy.” Until they reach that stage, be sure to catch the Family Rain’s hometown show at Bath Komedia on Friday, November 22. Visit www.thefamilyrain.com for details.

Boyce Avenue live at Komedia

Boyce Avenue, a Florida-based band popular for its strong acoustic roots and melodic rock sound, consists of the three brothers Alejandro, Fabian, and Daniel Manzano. The brothers first came together as a band in 2004 when Alejandro (lead vocals, guitar, piano), Fabian (guitar, vocals), and their older brother Daniel (bass, percussion, vocals) reconnected after pursuing their respective educational goals. In 2007, in an effort to share their music and ideas with the world, the band decided to start filming and posting videos on YouTube of their own songs and some of their favorite songs by other artists. Some of the first few videos they posted included acoustic versions of songs such as Justin Timberlake’s LoveStoned, Rihanna’s Umbrella and Coldplay’s Viva la Vida, among many others. The videos resonated instantly with YouTube viewers. The success of the videos was followed by a full-length debut album, All We Have Left, which will be re-released independently by the band this autumn, through its own label, 3 Peace Records. The lead out singles from the album include Every Breath, On My Way and Broken Angel. Catch the band at Komedia tonight.

n exhibition by three local landscape painters takes place at the West Barn, Barton Farm in Bradford on Avon From Friday October 4 to Sunday October 6. The exhibition features the work of Valérie Pirlot, Andrew Taylor and Bob Child. The show will feature a large selection of original oil and watercolour paintings around the theme of the changing seasons in nature and cityscapes. Valérie Pirlot is a Belgian oil painter who moved to Bath eight years ago. She is inspired by light, nature and architecture. She has found in the city of Bath and the surrounding countryside a constant source of inspiration. Inspired by the work of the french impressionists, she works predominately in the great outdoors, in all weathers, and gets much joy from Fashion Museum Exhibition, 50 Fabulous Frocks, 10.30am-5pm daily, to Sun Jan 5, 2014. capturing the beauty of her surroundings with freshness and passion. Andrew Taylor is passionate about painting and particularly working ‘En plein air’ in the landscape, using mainly oils on wood-panels or canvas. Working in this manner, he says there is hardly time to consider things in a conscious way – it is an instinctive and spontaneous way of painting, reacting to the changing weather and light which often produces unforeseen results.Andrew enjoys teaching and gives lessons in vitreous glass painting and oil painting. Bob Child’s watercolours follow very much the English tradition using delicate tone and subtle chromatic harmonies. Working ‘En plein air’ encourages spontaneity and keeps the work fresh, avoiding the mistake of overworking and adding unnecessary details. Influences of David Cox and Cotman can be seen behind the scenes.

And on September 28 Cressida will be coming to Bath as part of The Telegraph Bath Children’s Festival of Literature to talk all about the magical fantasy world of the hero, Hiccup, and all the characters and creatures he meets along the way. She said: “I am very much looking forward to coming to Bath. I have talked at the Bath Children’s Literature Festival quite a few times before and I always have lovely audiences. “It’s such a beautiful city too which makes it very, very special.” And while some authors might shy away from the limelight, choosing instead to hide behind the pages of their books Cressida says she enjoys nothing more than getting out and about and meeting the young fans. “Sometimes authors can be quite shy I think,” said Cressida. “But that’s certainly not me.

36 THE WEEKEND

“I love meeting the fans and meeting the children who are excited about reading the books, and who ask wonderful questions which show they have been really paying attention to what I have been writing. “Children can really make you think, because they don’t miss a thing.” Creating a fantasy world is no easy task and Cressida says she has to take a very disciplined approach to her writing. She said: “I sit down at 9am every day. I have a studio at the bottom of the garden – it’s like a shed really and that’s where I do all my writing. “It’s very good. It gives me thinking time and I’m not interrupted by outside. “I am inventing a whole world so I need to have the peace and quiet. “I am that generation before people used computers every day and I wrote the first two books by hand. “After the second book I moved to doing it on the computer though. It’s much easier for moving text around and editing and saving different drafts. “But I find that if I get to a tricky bit, an emotional bit, or a poetic bit I often

go back to handwriting. “Somehow I find it helps. I think it’s because I’m an illustrator as well so I think in quite a visual way.” In fact, not only does Cressida write the How to Train Your Dragon books, but she also illustrates them herself too. Something which she says can help her to inspire her writing. “The illustrations help me visualise the characters,” she explains. “Sometimes when I have a new character I will draw him or her so I know what they look like and that can be very helpful.” Cressida began writing the How to Train Your Dragon books more than 10 years ago. The 11th book in the series, How To Betray A Dragon’s Hero, is released just two days before Cressida comes to Bath, and she has already started work on the 12th and final adventure. “I will be sad to say goodbye to the characters,” she said. “But it is that kind of story. They are all about growing up, and one of the things about growing up is that one day it has to happen. But I do feel like these characters are part of the family. And actually I’ve known some of them longer than my youngest child. That’s a very odd thought!” Cressida Cowell will be talking at The Forum at 2.30pm on Saturday, September 28. How to Betray A Dragon’s Hero (Hachette Children’s Books, £6.99) publishes on September 26.
