he other day I was in a shop which had a countdown to Christmas behind the till. I must confess that it came as a bit of a shock to realise just how quickly the festive season is barreling towards us. But there’s plenty of fun to be had in Bath before all the Christmas festivities get underway. The Great Bath Feast kicked off earlier this week and for the rest of the month there’s a whole host of gastronomic delights to get stuck into.

EDITORIAL We’re especially excited about our Meet the Chef Supper Club at the Kilted Chef on October 31 which hopefully you read about in last week’s issue. There’s still time to get your tickets, although places are limited so make sure you don’t miss out. Fool for fall fashion

f you’ve become stuck in that awkward summer to autumn style rut, it’s time to turn over a new leaf. Use the fall catwalk collections for inspiration and inject some fresh new looks into your wardrobe for the winter months ahead. The high street has swiftly adopted the designer trends, making them more accessible and affordable than ever. And if you’re not quite ready to let go of summer, try transitional looks like icy pastels, to bridge the gap seamlessly. Time to say hello to the new season hero trends. ■ Winter Pastels: You don’t have to quit your summer sorbet addiction just yet. Pastels have been put on ice for the new season giving the usual wintry palette a shot of fresh colour. Just picture a black dress teamed with a mint green or candy floss pink fuzzy coat. Pastels are the instant tonic for a dark wardrobe and can look incredible contrasted with grey. Create more impact by sticking to plain pastels rather than prints, and keep the tone cool and icy to make them winter appropriate. ■ Check mate: No longer reserved for the Queen’s countryside wardrobe, heritage fabrics have been given a contemporary twist. If it’s square, it’s around – and hot – this season. Anything goes from fine,

subtle tweeds through to bright, bold tartans that resemble picnic blankets. Also on the checklist, there’s girly gingham or ladylike dogstooth. Just about every staple has been decked out in graphic checks. Embrace the trend head-on and snuggle up in a statement winter coat, or try separates, like a skirt or top. For a casual look, pick out a plaid shirt and wear it prim ‘n’ proper buttoned up, or nonchalantly loose and undone. ■ Mono mode: Checks, spots, stripes or colour-blocking; just make sure it’s monochrome. Black and white is back, but this season it’s bolder with an emphasis on clean, flattering lines that pack a punch. Being limited to two colours doesn’t have to mean plain and simple if you prefer a more playful look. Experiment with extreme textures like fur, leather and patent. If you’re conscious about your curves, stick to a mainly black palette with white accents. ■ Grunge glory: Embrace your inner punk for this season’s most rebellious trend. Think lashings of leather and hints of hardware, like studs, zips and buckles. Employ some A-lister rock star attitude – this is about an elegant tough look, not teenage angst. If in doubt, turn to black, black, and more black, injected with punchy red

to stop the look veering into gothic territory. Take an average jumper into punk mode by simply adding spiky jewellery over the top in tarnished metals. ■ Darling buds: Bright florals have wilted to make way for moody blooms in a rich, dark palette. The key to the shift is a black or navy base for the printed or embroidered blooms to be planted on. It immediately gives the florals a grown-up, mysterious elegance. If you want something that’s rich but not necessarily dark, turn to sumptuous berry shades. For added wow factor, look for 3D applique blooms that will transform your body into a beautiful walking flower bed. Feeling adventurous? Cultivate your blooms with a mixed print, like florals on tartan. ■ Mannish moment: The antithesis to the ladylike silhouette, the androgyny trend is the answer for those who shy away from skirts and dresses. This is more Savile Row chic than scruffy tomboy. A tailored trouser suit is the easiest way to access this look – make it a man’s world with a crisp white shirt underneath, or wear a camisole top for a feminine touch. If you don’t want to dramatically change your look, a pair of handsome brogues or chunky loafers will instantly give your silhouette a cool masculine spin.

Time of year to pamper yourself

ust as we stock up on SPF potions before heading out into the sunshine, looking after skin and hair post-exposure is just as important. This week Lisa Haynes takes a look at ways to undo the damage caused by a summer of sun and prescribes some post-sun autumn beauty cures for your skin and hair:

Frazzled hair

■ Symptoms: Frizzy texture, split ends and a dehydrated mane thanks to UV exposure and excessive heat. ■ Solution: “Treat your hair to a nourishing weekly intensive treatment or mask that will feed your tresses,” recommends Norris Ogario, founder and creative director of Ogario salon. “For added therapy, pop on a shower cap after applying the mask to trap in the moisture and encourage the ingredients to absorb faster and penetrate deeper into the shaft to leave locks shiny and manageable.” ■ SOS: There’s only one thing for it if your ends are looking beyond repair – a trim. Split ends will impede healthy growth so just half an inch snipped off will make your hair stronger in the long run.

■ Symptoms: Dark marks on the forehead, cheeks and upper lip from over-exposure to the sun. ■ Solution: “To combat pigmentation and sun spots, use an even skin tone corrector to help fade away summer splotches and give a more even skin tone,” says B. skincare expert Ian Baynes. “It’s also important to protect the skin with a moisturiser containing SPF daily, no matter what the weather outside.” ■ SOS: If your sun spots and pigmentation marks are starting to affect your confidence, look into a professional laser treatment, which can permanently dissolve them using gentle targeted micro-pulse technology.

Burnt-out skin

■ Symptoms: Dull, dry and lacklustre skin due to a build-up of sunscreen over the summer. ■ Solution: “Use a gentle body exfoliator that contains alpha hydroxy acids or fruit enzymes that will help purge

Dehydrated face

■ Symptoms: Tight-feeling skin which may have a crepey appearance, especially if you’ve suffered sunburn. ■ Solution: “Dehydrated skin tends to look worn and lined so you need to restore balance with a routine that includes a serum, mask and moisturiser,” advises make-up artist Jemma Kidd. “Use a night cream that stimulates cell regeneration. Skin repairs itself at night and the temperature of the skin increases during sleep, aiding the absorption of active ingredients.” ■ SOS: The combination of planes, pina coladas and sun-baking can lead to a seriously dehydrated complexion. Book in for a post-holiday facial, for instantly hydrated and radiant skin.

Make the most of fallen fruits

he warm summer months might be over, but the abundant wild berries, plentiful apples, and juicy tomatoes they helped create can make it feel like the sun is still

shining. It’s unlikely keen gardeners can manage to eat all this bumper produce immediately though, which is where the art of storage comes in. Maincrop potatoes and onions will keep well in a cool shed or garage, while garlic should be placed in a cool room in the house. All three should be free of soil and perfectly dry before storing. Onions and garlic can be strung and hung up, while potatoes will be quite happy in paper or a hessian sack, kept in the dark to stop them from sprouting. If you have blackcurrants,

redcurrants and gooseberries, these are perfect for jams, partly because they contain plenty of pectin, the ingredient that makes jam set. With jams or jellies, it is important to sterilise the jars and lids for 10 minutes in boiling water before using them. Most fruits and vegetables will last up to 12 months using this method. Blackberries and other wild berries have been abundant this year, thanks to last year’s wet summer and this year’s dry one, and are easy to freeze (although avoid freezing strawberries as they become mushy). Just select the best fruit, spreading the berries in a single layer on a clean tray and put it in the fast-freeze section of the freezer. Once it’s frozen, transfer it to bags and return it to the freezer. If you have too many ripe tomatoes, try drying them in the

oven, placing them on a tray at the lowest setting for several hours with the oven door just ajar. Alternatively, skin them by placing them in a bowl of just boiled water, leaving them there for a few minutes, then removing the skin and blitzing them into a puree which can be a base for any Italian passata, which can be frozen. Unripe tomatoes can also be transformed into delicious green tomato chutney, there are umpteen recipes to be found on the internet. Cucumbers spring to mind when we think of pickling, but many vegetables and fruits can be preserved in this manner including peppers, cauliflower, apples and pears. Peas and green beans should be blanched (dunked in boiling water for several minutes, then plunged into cold water and dried off) before

Root vegetables such as carrots, parsnips, beetroot and celeriac can generally be left in the ground until required, although try to dig a few up to store in a cool place before winter sets in and the ground becomes too hard to harvest them easily. To store gluts of apples and pears, you’ll need to handle them carefully, placing them in a room with a low, even

temperature, good ventilation and a moist atmosphere such as a cellar. If you are putting apples in your garden shed, wrap them in newspaper (this slows the shrivelling process and isolates rots), put them in boxes, stack them in a cool spot under insulation (such as straw or polystyrene sheets) and cover with polythene. Heat is on

hings will be hotting up in Bath this weekend. The first Bath Chilli Festival will be taking place at the University of Bath on Saturday and Sunday with a programme of fiery

festivities. There will be a chilli market with 35 chilli traders selling everything from chilli plants to chilli cider and even chilli jewellery, a marquee with presentations on subjects like how to grow chillies and the science of chillies and, for the brave, there’s also a chilli eating competition where participants will be challenged to eat 10 chillies ranging from mild to mouth blisteringly hot. Even for those that are not a fan of spice, there will still be plenty to keep them entertained with live music. Bands from the university will be playing, with retro rockers Bite The Buffalo who performed at Glastonbury Festival this year, headlining on Saturday afternoon, and Dorset songstress Jazz Morley bringing an acoustic vibe to the top slot on Sunday. The event will also be raising money for the charity Emergency UK which supports civilian victims of war and poverty. One of the organiser, Richard Law, said: “The event is intended to be gastronomic, educational, entertaining and support charity. It is the first time a chilli festival has been held in Bath and we have got people coming from all over the country to take part, as well as some local chilli growers like the Wiltshire

Chilli Farm and the Upton Cheyney Chilli Farm.” Tickets to the Chilli Festival cost £4 in advance or £6 on the door. The chilli festival isn’t the only event adding some heat to the proceedings. The Vegetarian Cookery School has joined up with the Upton Cheyney Chilli Farm to host the Big Chilli Weekend next weekend (October 12 and 13) which will be two days devoted to picking, learning about and cooking chillies. Participants can join in for both days, or just one. Tickets cost £150 a day, with a 25 per cent discount for booking both days. On Saturday there will be a guided tour of the chilli farm followed by the chance to pick chillies. Participants will then return to the Vegetarian Cookery School for lunch and then spend the afternoon cooking up a spicy feast, with the day culminating in a shared meal. Sunday will be devoted to Mexican cookery with the day’s menu including dishes such as corn tortillas to eat with fresh and roasted salsas, mole poblano flavoured with dark chocolate and chillies, stuffed chillies, corn tamales wrapped in sweetcorn husks, refried pinto beans, guacamole, mesquite bean salad and Mexican tequila chocolate pudding. Chilli expert and owner of Chilli of The Valleys Dan Reed will also be joining in to share his expertise and offer advice on how to recognise different types, understand their use and grow your own at home. Giving Thai a try Rachel Demuth, from Demuths Vegetarian Cookery School, shares her recipe for Pad Thai. She said: “On our Thai courses we make Pad Thai for brunch, very quick to make, all you need is noodles, either dried, which you need to soak in boiling water and drain before use, or buy fresh noodles. “Spice up with fresh chillies and flavour with lemongrass and coriander and then the vegetables are up to you. “I like to add tofu, at our local Bath Thai store ‘Banthon’ in Weston you can buy ready-fried tofu or special Pad Thai tofu, which is very firm and coloured yellow with turmeric. “Traditionally beaten eggs are added at the end of the stir-frying. “Eat at once in large bowls with chopsticks!”

The walk Were it not for the presence of nearby Castle Combe, Biddestone could have been the tourist honeypot whose picture adorned any number of calendars, biscuit tins or magazine covers of ‘Olde England’. Here we have the village green replete with its pond and ducks, the scene overlooked by a traditional pub and handsome Cotswold stone properties. Below the village lies the By Brook, arguably the Avon’s most scenic tributary and one of the finest local fisheries. The landscape is pretty special, too, with a narrow flat-bottomed valley bounded by wooded slopes that are home to a rich array of wildfowl. The sharp-eyed visitor might spot Little Grebe or Grey Heron, Buzzard or Kestrel, Kingfisher or Barn Owl. At journey’s end, take time to visit the White Hart on the village green.

Celebrating success

ath’s business fraternity dazzled as they celebrated another year of success in the city at the Bath Chronicle’s Business Awards. Management consultancy Nine Feet Tall was crowned Business of the Year and its founder and director Esther McMorris took the top accolade of Business Person of the Year. Mrs McMorris launched the Queen Square company almost ten years ago

as a one-person band but now the operation employs 23 people and last year achieved a turnover of £1.6 million. “We’ve always been quite modest and understated – that’s just how we work we just get on with the job.” More than 400 people from Bath’s eclectic mix of businesses came together for the event, held at Bath Racecourse, from the outrageously risqué Lovehoney to the more sedate legal eagles at Thrings, who were headline sponsors this year.

Emma Dance talks to former Bond-girl Honor Blackman ahead of her visit to Komedia with her latest show, Honor Blackman as Herself

he might be 88 but Honor Blackman still oozes style, sophistication and sex appeal. And while many her age have long since settled into retirement, Honor still loves performing. “Staying power,” she says when I ask her how’s she managed to keep her career going for so many years. “Maybe other people don’t want to keep going for so long but I still enjoy it.” But while she might still love showbiz, there are some things she’s happy to forgo. “I’m doing a TV show tomorrow morning and the car is coming at 6.50am and I am not fond of that,” she laughs. “If I do any filming I don’t want more than two or three days now because I don’t like early mornings so much. “You put up with it when you’re young, but I’m damned if I will now.”

Honor says she’s always been more of a night owl than an early bird, putting her aversion to early starts down to her time in the theatre. “I started on theatre and then you don’t start work until 7,30pm, and then you eat afterwards so you don’t go to bed until very late. “You get used to it and I still eat late now. People tell me I shouldn’t but I’m programmed for it really. It’s not good for you though.” It’s a regime that doesn’t seem to have done Honor any harm however and she still has a figure that looks as if it would fit into her famous leather outfit from The Avengers. “I do Pilates,” she says. “It’s helping me enormously mobility wise. “I have a pretty crooked back after the Avengers – all those stomach throws didn’t do me a power of good!” Although body and stunt doubles are common place these days, that was not the case for Honor – something that almost ended her career when it had barely started. “I was almost killed in one of my first films,” she said. “I was dying by being run through with a sabre by a man on horseback. “I came down, and then the horse came down on my hair. “Of course nobody would allow it now. Health and safety and all that business is fantastic.” While Honor may be best known for her work on screen, as Cathy Gale in The Avengers or Pussy Galore opposite Sean Connery’s James Bond in Goldfinger. “I much prefer the theatre because people are there living and breathing,”

she says. “You can’t really see them but it’s not difficult to sense what is going on and that contact is so much more exciting than looking at a camera – although they can make you look wonderful. “This show is about my life – my childhood, first experiences in the theatre and what it was like to work with Sean and Dean Martin and those kinds of people. “People seem to think it’s kind of fascinating and I hope that Bath does too.” Honor Blackman as Herself will be at Komedia on Sunday, October 13 at 3pm. Sequel to ‘the Scottish play’

majestic sequel to Shakespeare’s Macbeth, written by the multi award-winning Scottish playwright David Greig visits the Theatre Royal Bath next week.

In Dunsinane Siobhan Redmond and Jonny Phillips reprise their starring roles. The play has proved a major hit with audiences in England and Scotland since it was first premiered by the Royal Shakespeare Company at Hampstead Theatre in 2010. The production received its Scottish premiere in 2011 at the Royal Lyceum Theatre in Edinburgh. Dunsinane was also adapted for radio and broadcast on BBC Radio 3. Now, the National Theatre of Scotland makes its first ever visit to the Theatre Royal Bath as it joins forces with the RSC to remount this exhilarating production touring to four theatres across Scotland and three theatres in England in 2013.

Dunsinane is the setting for David Greig’s play, the Scottish garrison town where the English occupying army is ready to commence battle and historically believed to be the site of a battle where Malcolm defeated Macbeth in 1054. Greig has taken Scotland’s real landscape and history and dramatically mixed it with the setting of

Shakespeare’s play, one of the most famous landscapes in literature, even though Shakespeare himself never set foot on Scottish soil. Macbeth is dead. Under cover of night, an English army has swept through Scotland, killed the tyrant and taken the seat of power. Tasty theatre for tots Offering a fabulous introduction to dance for young children, Yummm! visits the egg theatre, Bath from Saturday to Monday during The Great Bath Feast Festival. There are five performances for audiences aged four years and over, and one performance for ages two to four years. Presented by Tell Tale Hearts Theatre Company, Yummm! celebrates food as seen through children’s eyes in a vibrant and imaginative stage show using dance, delightful live music, comedy, quirky design and some

amusing eating utensils. The performance explores different taste sensations through physical theatre, the rhythms and musicality in onomatopoeia, and the funny eating habits of young children. he audience at Bath Phil’s concert on Saturday, October 12, in the magnificent setting of Bath Abbey, will be making their own contribution to the Young Apollo Festival – a celebration of the work of Benjamin Britten – by voting for the winner of a unique new composition competition. From more than 70 international applicants of all ages and backgrounds, eminent composers Oliver Knussen, Colin Matthews and Joe Duddell have selected three finalists. The winning composition, voted for in a secret ballot, will be published by Schott as part of the prize. The event forms the centerpiece of the Young Apollo Festival in conjunction with Bath Spa University in honour of the Britten Centenary, curated by Bath Phil music director Jason Thornton. Bath Philharmonia, or ‘Bath Phil’ as it is affectionately known, is a professional orchestra in existence for about 12 years. Bath Phil are delighted to have been awarded their first ever Arts Council England/National Lottery grant for the competition and the Festival. The Young Apollo Festival opens on Friday, October 11 with a masterclass given by LSO solo cellist Tim Hugh

(pictured), who performs in recital later that evening, prefaced by a pre-concert talk with renowned cellist Bruno Schrecker on the subject of working with Benjamin Britten. The theme runs throughout the festival, with further talks from George Odam – one of the first Hesse students at the Aldeburgh festival in 1961 – and a masterclass and Q & A event with baritone John Shirley-Quirk, who created roles in all Britten’s last five operas, including Death in Venice. Jason Thornton, music director Bath Phil, said: “We are delighted to host this festival in the Britten Centenary year, drawing together performers with such a rich experience of the composer and his music. “Britten said that ‘a musical experience needs three human beings ... It requires a composer, a performer and a listener’. Our composition competition is designed to deepen those connections – we are very proud to have the opportunity to do so.” Bath Phil will launch their 2013/14 season with the concert on Saturday, October 12, featuring the new works and also pianist Leon McCawley. Children’s laureate visits city literature festival

aterstone’s new Children’s Laureate Malorie Blackman will be making her first official visit in that role when she comes to Bath tomorrow for the city’s children’s Literature Festival. The author of the award winning novel Noughts & Crosses series which uses the setting of a fictional dystopia to explore racism will be discussing her latest gripping story The Noble Conflict at the Guildhall at 6pm. In the book Kaspar lives in a peaceful society created after years of violent war. Now a group of rebels threatens the peace and asks questions that challenge everything in which Kaspar believes. The evening is being sponsored by St Mary’s Calne which will also be giving out special bookmarks on the night launching a literary-themed competition. The winner of the competition will receive a Kindle. If you can’t get to the event you can also take part in the competition by

visiting the Girl Talk section of the school’s website at www.stmaryscalne.org. Malorie has written more than 50 books and is acknowledged as one of today’s most imaginative and convincing writers for young readers.
