recent poll by George at Asda found that a whopping 83 per cent of women would like to receive lingerie from their partner on Valentine’s Day. But with more than half of men admitting that they don’t know their partner’s size, and the thought of negotiating the pitfalls of buying such an intimate present sending them into a state of panic, they are more likely to opt for safer choices like flowers or chocolates. But buying lingerie doesn’t have to be stressful. Soozie Jenkinson, head of lingerie design at Marks & Spencer, said: “Femininity and romance are at the top of our creative agenda when designing beautiful lingerie for Valentine’s Day. “We understand that every woman has her own unique

R
osé wines come in all colours, styles and flavours… from the palest peach, delicate Riviera Rosé to the bold, Barbie-pink Californian ones. There’s a pink wine there for everyone in some guise or other, and they are truly great food wines too. But it’s on Valentine’s Day that the wine world truly turns rosy. So here are my top choices to impress your date this year, with a few romantic reds thrown in too. ■ ’

Food and passion go hand-in-hand, with certain delicacies said to fan the flames, so what should you look for on your Valentine’s Day menu?
F
or centuries, certain foods have been rumoured to have aphrodisiac properties. Named after the goddess of love, Aphrodite, aphrodisiacs are thought to increase sexual desire. According to The Cambridge World History of Food, aphrodisiacs were first
sought out as a remedy for various anxieties, including fears of inadequate performance, as well as a need to increase fertility. The ancient list of aphrodisiacs included aniseed, basil, carrot, orchid bulbs, pistachio nuts, rocket, sage, turnips and river snails. Of the foods to which aphrodisiac powers are traditionally attributed, fish, vegetables and spices have been the most popular throughout history. Sadly, science has not identified any chemical agents that could cause a direct physiological reaction, but you can still have some fun with folklore – and some aphrodisiac ingredients might surprise you. Here are ten foods which claim to spark the flames of passion.

Young at heart
I
have been thinking about being old lately. Not the winter-of-life sans hair, sans teeth kind – nobody likes to think about that, even though if we’re lucky, it’s coming to us regardless – but ‘retirement’ old. The sort of old that means you may be a bit forgetful, that it’s probably too late to leave your partner and move to Mexico to be a burlesque performer – the kind where people ignore you when you walk into a room, or worse, adopt a special, louder voice and smile more, because they pity you for being older than them, as if you were too slow and stupid to dodge life’s cruellest trick. And let’s not be Californian about this. I’m sure there are old people out there who swear by base-jumping before breakfast, and feel fitter than ever as they hike up mountains and launch community appeals with naked calendars. Good for them. But for most of us, old age is less enthusiastic than that. It may have its rewards – wisdom, free time, grandchildren, happy memories, a sense of perspective – but it also has its painful challenges – bereavement, illness, physical impairment, and simple lack of energy. But talking to older people, increasingly aware that their youthful personalities and brains are not gone, only hidden, by wrinkles and stopping and grey hair, it becomes increasingly ridiculous that so many are ignored and overlooked by the rushing hordes
❝
as ‘sweet’ as though the fact that they’re a bit deaf means they’ve regressed to being three; good for nothing more than gummily charming the grown-ups. It’s as though what they’ve learned, achieved or experienced counts for nothing, because they have passed into a place we don’t recognise. They walk among us but are not of us, the marked people, who remind us of our own fate – bent, ill, failing – and so we walk on by, or congratulate ourselves on our kindness as we help them across the road, or suppress a sigh in the post office because arthritis makes counting change difficult and we have a fast-track parcel to send. But it truth, we’re frightened of them. The elderly are a living portrait of Dorian Grey, showing us our future, and we’d rather stick in the attic and go about our business than confront the reality. Society is set up to treat them as an inconvenience, with their pensions and their fuel bills and their care homes, making us feel guilty. But the fact is, ‘they’ are ‘us’. When I was 18 I couldn’t imagine being 40. I pitied the lumbering, middle-aged dinosaurs who worried about wearing cardigans and got tired before midnight. I thought I’d dodge the bullet, and stay my cool, careless self forever. But years went by, without my permission – and I became middle aged. I can only assume, on that basis, that old age will happen too. I’ll still be the same person – but on the outside, I will be unrecognisable. And while old-age feistiness is to be welcomed, I suspect I may not feel like wearing purple and rattling my stick against railings. I may just want to be treated as a person, and not an embarrassing inconvenience.
Flic Everett is a journalist and author who has written for The Sunday Times, The Guardian, Cosmopolitan, Elle and Red magazine of the young. Loneliness is such a huge problem nowadays – but still, we shrink from offering our friendship – (“companionship” is only ever used in the context of the elderly, and frankly, it’s patronising). Or we refer to the over 70s

egendary Queen guitarist Brian May and singer Kerry Ellis have teamed up for a brand new show to be performed in Bath this week. The duo will be performing versions of Queen classics, alongside a number of their personal favourite songs for their Candlelight Concerts tour. Audiences in Bath will be able to catch the duo at the Theatre Royal on Sunday, February 23 for a show that promises to tell a story. Guitarist May is well known for performing with Queen, and frequently wrote songs for the band. He said the show will be very intimate and that anything could happen: “The Candlelight Concerts take us back to the old-style tours; they are very intimate and tell a story. “I am a guitarist, and I just love to make a noise, and in this tour I really do. “I am also very passionate about music

and singing, and working with Kerry is brilliant as she is a singer in a million. “The best thing about this tour is that really anything can happen.” The partnership between May and Ellis began when Ellis created the role of Meat in Queen’s epic musical We Will Rock You. She then went on to star as the Green Witch in the musical Wicked, before releasing her debut album Anthems in 2010, produced by May. Ellis said she enjoys working with May,

However Ellis and May both have a soft spot for their version of Dust in the Wind by the American rock band Kansas. May said: “It is very
hard to pick a favourite, as there are so many and we love all the songs we do. “However I do really enjoy performing Dust in the Wind, and it always goes down very well.” May said he spends a lot of time in Bath and is looking forward to returning. He was named as the new patron of the Herschel Museum of Astronomy last month, stepping into the role left vacant by Sir Patrick Moore. May said: “I seem to spend a big part of my life in Bath, which is wonderful as it is a beautiful city. “I am very honoured to be the new patron of the Herschel Museum of Astronomy, as astrophysics is one of my passions.” ■ Ticket availability is limited.

Diamonds Are Forever Crowds gathered to celebrate the reopening of Nicholas Wylde’s jewellery store in Northumberland Place. Last year the store was devastated by fire, not long after Nicholas had celebrated 25 years in business. But within a week Nicholas was up and running again, trading in a temporary shop in The Corridor. But now he has returned to his old store, which has quite literally risen like a phoenix from the ashes.
Actor Robert Powell did the honours of cutting the ribbon, before the crowds were invited inside to see the refurbished store and to try their luck at unlocking a vault to win a special Valentine’s competition. 32 THE WEEKEND
Joyous Gyles’ engaging show or almost two decades, Gyles Brandreth has been searching for the secrets of happiness. The result of that exploration is Looking For Happiness, a funny, erudite and engaging stage show, which is launching onto a national tour having been lapped up by critics and audiences alike at the 2013 Edinburgh Fringe. “I’m fascinated by happiness,” says Gyles, “what it is, who gets it and how. It’s been a real journey. “My search coincided with having lost my father and my best friend. My sister died and then my brother died: they were going down like flies around me. And I thought, here I am, the professional happy man with the colourful jumpers, turning up on TV grinning away in the jolly knitwear. I was annoyingly happy. “But inside it was a different story, so I started this search. “The last stand-up show I did was about the famous people I’d met and I stood up on stage and told funny stories about that. But this time I wanted to talk about this search for happiness.” After a great deal of research, toil and fun, Brandreth has boiled it all down to the seven secrets of happiness. There’s too much selfishness going around, Brandreth believes, too much focus on the individual. Gyles said: “One of the things I learned was to avoid inward looking and to get away from narcissism; it’s interesting to me that the Brownies and Girl Guides have changed their oath to say something along the lines of discovering what your beliefs are, and discovering the real me. “Well, actually, we don’t want to discover the real me: stop thinking about yourself.
www.bathchronicle.co.uk
There are people going around taking pictures of themselves, a selfie, and sending them everywhere: well, this doesn’t make you happy.” Among the other secrets, Brandreth states ‘live in the moment, ‘don’t resist change’ and, more bluntly, ‘be happy’. But there is one rule that he believes might well over-ride all others and he’s witnessed close at hand what happens if you don’t ‘cultivate a passion’. He may have cultivated many passions in life, but if you had to pick one key fascination it’s surely his love of language. He said: “My father was a lawyer and my mother was a teacher, so words were very important to me as a child. I learned to play Scrabble very young, and used to play it with an older gentleman who was the founder of my school. “This gentleman died aged 102 and I played with him into his 90s. “Incredibly, he had been a friend of Oscar Wilde’s! He would use these words that were arcane and obsolete but he’d say that they were current when he learned them.” Tickets cost £17.

34 THE WEEKEND
{olh{yl Win tickets to see Coward comedy Noël Coward’s divinely funny classic Fallen Angels sees Jenny Seagrove and Sara Crowe star as best friends Julia Sterroll and Jane Banbury. With their passionless husbands away playing golf, a mutual long-ago lover announces his intention to pay Julia and Jane an impromptu visit. All in a fluster, there’s clearly only one thing to do: hit the bottle! Or rather, open the bubbly. As each successive glass of champagne loosens their tongues, hidden jealousies surface, the claws come out, and all attempts at demure behaviour go out the window. But it’s not until the unexpected early return of their golfing husbands that the women’s evening really hits its frenzied peak.

36 THE WEEKEND
his month sees the third Bath Bachfest which is now concentrated into one long weekend of glorious music. The festival is masterminded by Amelia Freedman, who is the woman behind the programming of the hugely successful Bath Mozartfest and a one-time director of the Bath International Music Festival. This year’s Bach extravaganza opens on Thursday February 20 with The Cardinall’s Musick directed by Andrew Carwood at St Mary’s Church Bathwick. This is billed as a programme of work by Bach and his French contemporaries, which in this case includes composers like Rameau, Lully and Schutz. Bach’s music is set in the context of his times while there is a sequence of intimate motets by his French contemporaries ending with Charpentier’s dramatic mini oratorio describing St Peter’s denial of Christ. On Friday you can hear cellist Colin Carr play two of the Bach cello suites – numbers four and five – in a lunchtime recital in the Guildhall while the evening concert is at the Assembly Rooms. There will be the Academy of Ancient music with director Richard Tognetti on violin. The theme for the evening is Italianate Bach which means pieces like the Brandenburg Concerto No 3 placed alongside concertos by Vivaldi, Pisendel and of course Vivaldi. On Saturday morning you can hear violinist Christian Tetzlaff playing
www.bathchronicle.co.uk
Bach sonatas as the Assembly Rooms. The concluding concert of the festival will be in Bath Abbey on Saturday night, when the New London Consort conducted by Philip Pickett performs Bach’s Mass in B Minor.

T
he Zen Hussies, create a highly original and characteristic slice of contemporary roots music. They meld a diverse range of genres – swing, rhythm and blues, ska, Dixieland, rockabilly, calypso – culminating in a punked-up swing-ska sound. They are trailblazers for new artists enjoying the resurgence of interest in pre-war music.
Naturally fusing these musical influences into an instantly recognisable and contemporary sound, they avoid the trap of mere nostalgia and simple gimmicks. A memorable name on the live circuit now for a decade, performing over a thousand gigs on stages of all shapes and sizes, the Zen Hussies are very much a live band, long renowned for their high energy and marathon length sets, gregarious showmanship, deft
musicianship and good humour alike. The Zen Hussies prove popular with DJs and fans across Europe and beyond, with recent releases in Japan enjoying much success. The play Bath Chapel Arts Centre, tomorrow. Doors open at 7.30pm and tickets cost £10 on the door.

Return of a King: The Battle for Afghanistan, William Dalrymple
The team from Topping & Co booksellers give their pick of what’s on the shelves this week
An historic account of Britain’s first invasion of Afghanistan in 1839. 20,000 British and East India Company troops poured through the high mountain passes and re-established Shah Shuja ul-Mulk on the throne. After two years of occupation, the country exploded into violent rebellion. The British were routed and suffered their greatest military defeat and humiliation of the nineteenth century. This is an incredibly relevant and timely account from which it is impossible not to draw parallels with today. Well-written, gripping, and thought-provoking, this is the definitive book on the subject.
