Nobody will ever consider giving YOU a mortgage... ...more than we will. Here at Bath Building Society, we always consider every mortgage application. We understand perfectly that everyone has their own story, their own circumstances and they often don’t fit the mould of other big mortgage lenders when it comes to the questions asked on the application form. Quite often, ‘the computer says no’ when in fact the computer could say ‘yes’ if it only asked the right questions. So, if you are slightly different, then we’re here to help. Whether you’re a first time buyer looking for a 95% or 100% Parent Assisted Mortgage (a parental guarantee applies) or you are self employed and can’t get a mortgage, it will be worth getting in touch. Terms and conditions apply. To tell us about you, call us on 01225 475702 or visit www.bathbuildingsociety.co.uk

Bath Investment & Building Society is authorised by the Prudential Regulation Authority and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority and Prudential Regulation Authority, Registration Number 206026. Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on your mortgage. Think carefully before securing other debts against your home.

I’ve been doing a lot of gushing this week – mainly about Raymond Blanc and his fabulous hotel and restaurant in Oxfordshire. Being as fanatical about food as I am, meeting him was always going to be a pleasure, but I can honestly say that this was one of the most surprising and thought-provoking interviews I have ever done. It’s so easy to walk around the supermarket mindlessly filling the trolley without really giving a thought to our selections, but talking to Raymond really made me think about the implications of every choice I make, from the variety of apple I select to checking where the meat is

EDITORIAL Lynne Fernquest reared. It’s clear that he is not just passionate about what he does, but immensely knowledgeable as well, and while he might sometimes come across on television as rather ditzy, behind the French charm and the ‘ooh la las’ there’s a brain even sharper than his kitchen knives. He is a truly remarkable man and I hope that reading the interview inspires you just a fraction of the amount that he inspired me.

Becky Johnson, retail manager at Fabulous, SouthGate, Bath, talks about her tips for making sure your accessories are on trend this autumn

I

n the wake of London Fashion Week, we have had a glimpse of the colours and styles we’ll all be seeing interpreted on the high street next Summer, which will filter through to jewellery also next year. But as far as Autumn/Winter is concerned, I can let you know what’s hot right now, to get your wardrobe into gear this season, as I have just returned from the major jewellery trade show International Jewellery London, to look at new lines for our designer jewellery boutique in the Southgate Centre. Fashion really influences jewellery designers and, although the pace of change is slower than that with clothing, there are definite looks that can help update an outfit for the new season. There are four key trends which came through for autumn on the catwalk, that we are seeing reflected in jewellery: ■ Dreamer: drawing on iconography and symbolism from cultures and religions across the world. You can use chakras, charms, stars and hearts to express your inner Dreamer. This is a huge trend in jewellery with Pandora, ChloBo and Nikki Lissoni leading the way. ■ Screen Goddess: a grown-up, sophisticated look of old-fashioned glamour that takes the current love of pearls and nostalgia one step further. Nikki Lissoni has brought out some beautiful necklaces that typify this look ■ Ice Queen: a ChloBo frosted look that is Lucky13 a more subtle and Bracelets, sophisticated take

from £60

on the glitzy and dazzling sparkle that we saw in jewellery and accessories last year. Our brand new collection ‘Blowing in the Wind’ is a range of real leaves plated in Silver, Brass and Rose Gold which works well for this trend. ■ Rebel: jewellery and fashion with an unexpected, subversive twist, exemplified by Vivienne Westwood’s new watch collection. This strong look requires plenty of attitude and is the perfect way to accessorise any Autumn outfit. I have no doubt that this season will see a continuation of the trend for stacking and combining pieces of jewellery in a unique way, to create an individual look. Women in Bath like to express their personality, values and attitude through their clothes and accessories, and jewellery really allows you to do this. We have also noticed a trend that is really gathering pace, for women to own more than one watch, to have what we call a ‘watch wardrobe’ for different occasions and outfits. There is a desire to treat a watch more like an expression of personality and mood than as a timepiece and I see this as a continuing trend for the next few years, not just seasons. We will be launching even more new collections at our Winter fashion show, ‘Frost & Sparkle’, coming up in November, so pop into our store to find out more. Our Bath customers love finding out what’s new, allowing them to follow one of the trends or demonstrate their individuality. Either way, you can be fashionable and fabulous!

Look good feel great

F

orget expensive spas and yoga holidays, sometimes it’s the simple things in life that make all the difference. Abi Jackson suggests ten cheap, cheerful and easy ways to boost your spirits. ■ Crank up the music We don’t need scientific proof to convince us of the inspiring powers of music but, in case you’re wondering, scientific proof does exist – and lots of it. So put on some feel-good music, turn off the TV, forget about everything else, and really absorb it – then feel the tension ease away and your spirits lift. ■ Go for a walk: It’s free, you can do it anywhere, and it can be as strenuous or relaxing as you want it to be – the benefits of a good stroll are certainly endless. As well as the health benefits and feel-good hormones released from being active, being outdoors in the fresh air and surrounded by nature brings an added boost. ■ Catch up with a friend: When it comes to feeling happy, studies have found that people who regularly have a coffee, for instance, with a close friend are happier than those who focus more on ‘bigger’ rewards, like expensive holidays. Interaction with friends enable you to forget about work and chores and being a mum/granny/wife, or dad/husband, for a short, but vital, period, and just be ‘you’. ■ Write a letter: With email and mobile phones, instant communication has become so easy, but it lacks the meaning of an old-fashioned letter. Sitting down to write enables you to focus your thoughts and reflect on what’s going on in your world – and

6

there’s the pleasure of knowing you’ll be making the recipient’s day too. ■ Wear brights: Our moods respond to brightness and colour, and this is something fashion stylists have been using to their advantage for years. So for an instant mood-booster, throw on some colour. If wearing too much sounds daunting, start with just a splash – a bright scarf or sweater, perhaps. ■ Browse old photos: Whether it’s a wedding or a holiday when the children were young, why not dust off those old photo albums and indulge in the memories? A healthy dose of nostalgia can be comforting and reviving. ■ Reach for the trowel: Earlier this year, a survey by Gardeners’ World magazine revealed that 90 per cent of gardeners believe their hobby boosts their mood. People who regularly gardened were less likely to report feeling unhappy or depressed, too. If you don’t have a garden, how about looking into community gardening projects or shared allotments? ■ Do a good deed: Don’t

THE WEEKEND www.bathchronicle.co.uk

worry if you don’t have time to volunteer for a charity or much money to spare – small acts of kindness, like offering to pick up a neighbour’s groceries, donating biscuits to a nearby care home, or picking up the phone to ask a relative how they are doing all make a big difference. ■ Pick up a book: A good book can stay with your for years and in the short term, reading can have happiness-boosting powers too. As one benefit, it requires you to find peace and quiet and switch off from ‘normal’ life, and this in itself is relaxing and stress-relieving. ■ Get baking: Baking has enjoyed a revival in recent years, with the success of shows like The Great British Bake Off, and no wonder – it’s one of life’s real simple pleasures. Keen bakers rave about the therapeutic qualities of retreating to the kitchen for a few hours. Don’t get hung up on whether your brownies or cakes are perfect, that defeats the purpose. Baking’s a skill and requires practice, just make sure you have fun trying.

Seasonal spruce up Interior designer, author and full member of the BIID, Lesley Taylor offers advice on how to revamp your home for autumn

I

t pains me to say it, but autumn is here. It is time to say goodbye to our flip-flops and maxi dresses for another year and replace evenings of alfresco dining with cosy nights curled up in front of the TV. We can’t complain though, after all, the weather has been kind to us this summer. The thing is we’ve been spending so much time outside and so little time inside that our homes could be in need of a little TLC. Whilst I’m sure you’ve been keeping your garden in tip-top condition over the summer (any excuse to catch a few rays!), your home may be looking a little tired in places and the jobs you’ve been meaning to do have been put off whilst you’ve been soaking up the sun! Well, let’s run through a few quick and affordable ways that you can give each room of your home a bit of a revamp. Now that you’re going to be spending more time inside, you want it to be looking its best!

8

Let’s start with the hallway. This can always be a bit of a chaotic part of the home with shoes, bags, umbrella’s and goodness knows what else lying around!

THE WEEKEND www.bathchronicle.co.uk

It’s easy to just throw your stuff down as soon as you walk through the door, but this doesn’t create a good first impression of your home. Try to get this space as organised as you can. There are some fantastic coat racks and umbrella stands on the market ranging from vintage designs to really contemporary models, which are not only practical, but really add to the décor of your hallway. With so much passing traffic, the hallway is the one area of the home that is likely to tire most quickly. If your walls are looking a little scuffed, give them a new lease of life with a lick of paint. This won’t cost the earth or take up too much of your time to do. You may also want to think about quirky little features that you can include that make a bold impression – how about painting your stairs, or fitting a stair runner to really brighten up the space? Moving onto the kitchen, there are a few updates you can do in here too. If

ovtlz

your cabinets are looking a little dated, think about replacing the handles. You may think that it won’t make much of a difference, but believe me, it will! If you’re looking for a bit of a larger project, dependent on the style of your kitchen, re-painting the doors could be another option. Look to see whether you have any grease marks on the ceiling as removing these can brighten up the room instantly. Try to remove them using sugar soap and then apply a fresh coat of paint if you need to. If your kitchen includes a dining table you could re-upholster the chairs, or if its wooden, you may want to sand it down and repaint it for a fresh new look. The bathroom is similar to the kitchen in the sense that in order to give the room a complete revamp it can be an extremely costly and lengthy process.

But there are still small changes you can do in the meantime. Give your tiles a rigorous clean so that they sparkle as if they were new and ensure the grout lines are free of soap-scum and mould and remove lime scale from taps and shower heads. Try to keep this space as clutter-free as you can, so if you haven’t got adequate storage in place, think about wall-hung modular furniture or a mirrored cabinet over the basin to help keep the room neat and tidy, without taking up valuable floor space. When it comes to your living area and bedrooms, it is easiest to make your changes here. Replacing your cushions and curtains and buying a new rug can make all the difference and can really help to brighten up a space and add texture and depth. If you have a neutral décor in

£

place a few colourful accessories will avoid the space from looking bland and uninspired. To suit the autumn season, greys and burnt oranges are both ideal colour choices. Try to make a focal point in each of these rooms, whether it is in the form of a statement piece of furniture, or a decorative mirror on the fireplace. Think about changing around the layout of these rooms if the space is available. Simply swapping the armchair and the sofa around can completely change the dynamics of a space. Feeling inspired yet? Refreshing our homes doesn’t have to cost a fortune, or take up a lot of time. A few nice little touches here and there can really make an impact. Go on; give your home a little TLC. ■ Visit www.lesleytaylor.co.uk for more style tips

Gin – best bar none

P

rovenance and seasonality are the buzz words of the moment when it comes to food. And Andrew Fisher, mixologist and bar manager at ArtBar at the Abbey Hotel believes that the same principles should also apply to drinks. “We work really closely with local brands,” he said. “Provenance is really important when it comes to food, and it should also be important when it comes to drinks as well. “People come to Bath from all over the world, and they don’t just want something that they can get anywhere. “They want to try something different, and if it’s made just down the road then it’s a bit more special, and it’s a talking point. “The drinks menu will also change to reflect the seasons. “You wouldn’t expect to go to a restaurant and see asparagus on the menu in January, but for some reason people still want drinks with strawberries and raspberries in the winter.

“We won’t be doing that though, we will be working with whatever is in season. “There are certain things that you have to have – I can’t run a bar without lemons for example – but everything else will come and go with the seasons.” Andrew is a bit of a wizard with a cocktail shaker, turning out wonderful creations that not only taste fantastic, but also look the part too, but perhaps surprisingly, his favourite tipple is a humble gin and tonic. He said: “Gin and tonic is the best created drink ever. “There’s so much more to it than Gordons and Schweppes. “At ArtBar we have a whole page of the menu just dedicated to gins and tonics with seven different gins and seven different tonics. “Most people have a favourite gin but not a favourite tonic, we are here to give them a different experience. “You can try different combinations and there are different garnishes. “Garnishes are very important – both visually, and they work with the drink

to really lift it. “The glassware is very important too. It all makes a difference. “You could say ‘it’s just a gin and tonic’ but it’s not. It’s more than that.” Andrew will be holding a special gins and tonics evening at ArtBar on October 22 as part of the Great Bath Feast. There will be the chance to taste nine different gins and nine different tonics and guests will have the opportunity to mix and match to try different combinations to decide on their ultimate gin and tonic. Tickets cost £30. Call 01225 461603 for more details. There’s plenty of other liquid refreshment available during the Great Bath Feast. For details visit www.great bathfeast. _l {hsr {v co.uk. mvvk / kypur How to make it ■ Ingredients: No3 London Dry Gin 37.5ml Campari 12.5ml Aperol 20ml Antica Formula 30ml Home Brewed Chinchona and Cassia Bark Tonic Syrup Topped with a Cryo-Juice Cucumber and Aspall Organic Cyder Foam ■ Method: Stir in a large jug the Gin, Campari, Aperol and Antica Formula with ice and lashings of orange zest. Stir for 50 seconds. Add 2 drops of home brewed Cinchona and Cassia Tonic Syrup. Using a soda Syphon charged with one canister of Co2 layer the Cucumber and Cyder foam on top. Top with a fresh Pea Shoot

Confessions of a cocktail geek ■ To make the foam: Using Aspall Organic Cyder (300ml) and 50ml Cyro Juiced Cucumber blended with 100ml Xanthane and water ( a derivative of Cellulose which you whisk together pour into a soda siphon, charged with one co2 canister) Molecular enzymes and agents can be bought from http://store.molecularrecipes.com and it even tells you how to use them all) To Cyro-Juice a cucumber place in a freezer bag, chopped roughly and freeze over night. Remove the next day and thaw. Once fully thawed place in freezer again. Repeat this process 4 of 5 times untill a gorgeously fresh juice can be seen. ■ You can try this, and other cocktails like it at The Aspall Cyder Match at Circo Bar and Lounge as part of The Great Bath Feast on October 23. For tickets, costing £25, call 01225444100.

14 THE WEEKEND

Bella Newman, mixologist at Circo on South Parade shares her recipe for Miniature Cyder Negroni: This cocktail sounds rather over complicated, and I am a certified cocktail geek so apologies if it seems I am talking Klingon to you but I revel in the idea of new techniques and discovering actually how simple it can be. Creating this cocktail was something experimental and so new to me but it was by far one of the most enjoyable things I have ever done! My love affair with No3 Gin was the base of this concoction. To me No3 Gin depicts everything great with a gin, it appeals to my hardened taste receptors that like the taste of strong alcohols and bitter savoury twangs, so naturally, to create the ultimate Negroni I had to use it. From the No3 Comp in Bristol a few months back I created a home made Cinchona and Cassia Bark Tonic Syrup, as I had some of this left I thought it only fit to use its unique home brewed bitterness and citrus punch to steady savoury tones of the foam. The foam

was a real triumph for me and I squealed like a fan girl when I watched it appear like a glossy mr whippy from the soda siphon. To make the foam I cryo juiced two cucumbers which involved freezing and thawing at different stages to produce a clear juice. I’m already thinking about creating a cucumber tonic water that would pair nicely with Hendricks, or even a coconutty gin like Hoxton. I then matched this with Aspall Organic Cyder, using 50ml Cyro Juiced Cucumber and 300ml Cyder, Xanthane and a derivative of Cellulose which I then blended and whacked into a soda siphon, and charged with one CO2 canister. Even without the siphon the foam was great just using the hand blender. It was more like an air with larger bubbles, but the siphon created a regulated, consistent texture that produced a sumptuously silky mouth feel. With this floating on top of the drink, as soon as you started to drink you are greeted with a luscious cucumber heavy foam then hit with a cold bitter and citrus of the Negroni.

The walk ‘Sought after village’ and ‘highly desirable location’ are just two of the current phrases being used by local estate agents to describe the village of Wellow. Handsome properties line the main street, where the ever-popular Fox & Badger pub continues to earn fine reviews. In the background is St Julian’s Church, with its Somerset Perpendicular tower, whilst in the valley below is an ancient packhorse bridge and ford that take travellers across the Wellow Brook. All around lie the rolling hills of this corner of Somerset, an area described by one writer as ‘where the Cotswolds meet the Mendips’, and characteristics of both of these limestone regions can be found round-about. There is no finer vantage

point along the way than Stoney Littleton Long Barrow, one of the best accessible examples of a Neolithic chambered tomb, with its multiple burial chambers open to view – so be sure to bring a torch.

kh z v|{ Hecate Theatre: The Madam

Hecate Theatre have dusted off a 1960s sibling drama The Madam which was shown in Bristol earlier this year but which opens at the Mission Theatre in Bath tonight. Focusing on the key themes of family love, revenge and the lies we tell ourselves, Hecate Theatre’s journey into 1960s suburbia is anything but peaceful. Set in the living room of the Davenport family home, The Madam revolves around four sisters and a sinister family secret, which threatens to disrupt their fragile domestic harmony. Originally written by Gwen Cherrell as an antidote to male-dominated dramas, The Madam features a cast of six talented actresses, minimal set and original music. It runs for three nights. Bath Abbey banquet

B

ath Abbey was transformed last week into Bath’s most majestic restaurant as three Michelin-starred chefs cooked a banquet for 106 people to celebrate the start of the month-long Great Bath Feast 2013. The great church doors were wide open, the bells were ringing and everyone knew they were arriving for a very special occasion. The one-night-only event saw the abbey as you have never seen it before – with a huge, beautifully decorated table through the centre of the choir stalls. On arrival guest were served canapés and Champagne Jacquart, followed by a three course menu prepared by Chris Staines (head chef, The Allium Brasserie at the Abbey Hotel), Sam Moody (executive chef, The

Bath Priory Hotel and Restaurant) and Hywel Jones (executive chef, Lucknam Park). Richard Bertinet of The Bertinet Bakery baked gorgeous focaccia, and Great Western Wine selected the wines. Catering and hospitality students from City of Bath College helped with the preparation, and local producers such as Grow Green @ Hartley Farm ensured that the feast was kept local. Nick Brooks-Sykes, chief executive of Bath Tourism Plus, said: “What a fabulous event and a great start to the month-long programme of events.” Les Redwood, of Bath Business Improvement District, added: “What a night! “It really couldn’t have been better and a superb start to the Great Bath Feast programme.” Xpj{|ylzB Xhvsv Nlysh ~~~6mlyshwhvsv6jvt

Soul food from the heart Emma Dance visits Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons to

meet Raymond Blanc before his Great Bath Feast visit

I

’ve been RB’d – apparently. At least that’s what I’m told by a member of staff at Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons, Raymond Blanc’s luxury hotel and two-Michelin starred restaurant, when I tell him about my experience of meeting the acclaimed chef. The knowing smile on his face suggests I’m not the first to have

asked Monsieur Blanc a question, and to get in response a 30-minute torrent of enthusiasm, complete with wild gesticulations, anecdotes and frantically drawn sketches to illustrate his point, that leaves you feeling slightly shell shocked. Because when you hit upon a subject that Raymond feels strongly about, there’s no stopping him. There’s a intensity to him,

24 THE WEEKEND www.bathchronicle.co.uk

something that rarely comes across on television, and in person he is even more captivating than he is on screen. On this occasion it is a question about whether he thinks that it’s important to encourage children to cook and become interested in food, that opens the floodgates. “I could respond with 25 answers, saying yes, yes, yes, yes, and more,”

ipn ylhk

Nvvk pz why{ vm v|y j|s{|yl6 Nvvk pz why{ vm v|y l{opjz

he says, looking me straight in the eye. “It is that important. It really is that important. We are a generation who treats food so badly. We have reduced food to a mere commodity. “Our food became poor from intensive farming, heavy processing, heavy branding. Food lost its soul and lost completely its meaning and was trivialised. “We wanted the cheapest possible food and now look at the problems it has caused. “We are a generation who messed up. We chewed things up, swallowed it, defecated it and never asked a single question, because we didn’t care. “ But although he may think that the past has been bleak, Raymond believes there is still hope for the future. “Today we are living in a world where all is changing and at last we are connecting with our food,” he said. “Food is part of our culture. Food is part of our ethics. We want to know where our food comes from. And, of course, now the kids are the ones who will save the world. “They are the best possible investment so the health service doesn’t explode or implode – or both. We are now living longer and it will cost more and more and more to keep us alive, but if we eat healthier foods, there will be less cavities and less obesity and we will cost less to the state.” For Raymond, the benefits of eating better are not just for your health: “For me, seasonality is the most important word in the world of gastronomy – and I don’t mean gastronomy, just as a Michelin star meal at Le Manoir. “It is so important and so crucial

because no one really understands the benefit of real seasonality. If you eat food that is local, then you help your farmer to keep his business and his farm, and if you buy more, he will grow more, and then you keep your village and the village keeps its post office. There is less global warming and less carbon footprint. It is all an incredible patchwork. “The moment you want your strawberries in the winter, think of the

implication of it. And each time you buy an apple. Every time you buy an apple, you make a choice. You make a political choice, an economical choice, a socio-economic choice, an environmental choice and a health choice. “Kids are the ones who will reconnect with eating well. Each generation will know more about food because we are on a journey of discovery and it is very exciting.” Raymond will be cooking with young people in Bath when he visits the city later this month, on October 23 as part of the Great Bath Feast.

He will be judging a cookery competition for budding chefs from the Royal High School in Bath, where the competitors will be challenged to produce a soufflé to rival Raymond’s own. He said with a smile: “From my British friends I have acquired the notion of fair play so it would be very unfair of me to compete against them. “I would beat them down completely flat, so I have sent Clive Fretwell to give them a masterclass on how to make a soufflé so it will be a better match. Clive has worked for me for 28 years, 14 as head chef at Le Manoir and 14 at Brasserie Blanc. He is a wonderful man. “I am very much looking forward to coming to Bath. We will have a wonderful evening at Brasserie Blanc where we will have a lovely dinner and I will speak as well, and create a lovely evening for the community that we are a part of. “What’s lovely about Brasserie Blanc is that although it is a chain, it is a chain with a big heart and we are part of the fabric of the community in all the towns and cities that we are in. “I think we might add another item to the festivities, too. In Queen Square outside the Francis Hotel there is a wonderful place for playing pétanque. “Whoever wants to play, I will take them on. But I am a very bad loser. I have been here for 40 years and still don’t know how to lose. It’s terrible. “But I can laugh about it. That’s one thing I have learned from you. “Years ago I could not have laughed at myself. The French take themselves very seriously. But now I don’t. It has taken a long time, mind you.”

aturday Night Live … Spinal Tap ... The Simpsons. It reads like the holy trinity of US screen comedy, but it’s actually Harry Shearer’s CV. Which begs the question: how did this 69-year-old legend, best known for voicing the likes of Mr Burns and Smithers in Springfield, end up spending the summer performing in a straight stage drama about three Holocaust survivors, first at a fringe theatre in north London next week at the Theatre Royal, Bath? “Because”, says Shearer simply, “Daytona is a knockout of a piece. “I have never been one of those comedy people who says, ‘God, I won’t be fulfilled in my gift unless I act in a serious dramatic role.’ That’s not me. I could have gone my entire life without doing anything that wasn’t satire or comedy. I occasionally get sent a script and, normally, to be charitable, they are okay. But this play really hit a chord with me.” Written by Oliver Cotton, the gripping and witty triple-header stars Shearer and one of Britain’s favourite actresses Maureen Lipman as Joe and Elli, an

’ ageing Brooklyn couple with an unshakeable love of ballroom dancing – and each other. Unshakeable, that is, until Joe’s estranged brother Billy (John Bowe) comes knocking on their door. “And I had exactly the experience reading it that you probably did,” says Shearer. “Which is: holy crap, here is something worth doing.” In truth, Shearer had been sniffing around for his London stage debut ever since he wrapped filming on his forthcoming TV series Nixon’s the One, last year. “I’d had tentative conversations about a West End thing that didn’t eventuate and one of the reasons I got an agent here was to see if there was a possibility of anything else – my wife is a Brit and she’s been urging me in that direction.” Judith Owen, the Welsh singer-songwriter whom Shearer married in 1993, also introduced him to Maureen Lipman and the pair bonded from the off. “I like smart funny people,” he says, “and while I don’t think Maureen would appreciate me speaking for her, she seems to be afflicted with the same thing as me: a low threshold of boredom. We’re the sort who ‘change it up’ to keep ourselves occupied.” The actors share a Jewish heritage that makes certain themes in Daytona really resonate. He says: “My parents were

both refugees from Europe, the only surviving members of their families. And so I grew up in a family somewhat resembling Joe and Ellie’s. I recognise that brittle New York wisecracking they do with each other.” Maureen is famously outspoken on Jewish politics and is also a great friend of the play’s author Oliver Cotton. She says: “It’s a play about the validity of revenge and of compromise. Two people who compromised love for some stability in their lives after everything that happened to them during the war. “And into their lives comes a figure from the past who’s about to shatter that – who’s done something monumental.” Completing the cast is John Bowe, who plays the role of Billy. “It’s a gift of a part”, he says, “though I knew it was going to be a nightmare with only four weeks rehearsal. For Harry too, it’s been a huge leap – he’s not used to stage performing as much as Maureen and I are, but my god, he has stepped up to the mark.” Of course Shearer has played some of the biggest stages in the world, including Glastonbury and Wembley, as Derek Smalls in the legendary Spinal Tap. So how do these experiences differ to Daytona? “You know,” he says, “the energy is totally different when you’re performing music in a front of a large crowd as opposed to a play in a small theatre. But the adrenalin is all the same.”

Cymbeline at the egg On Tuesday and Wednesday Cymbeline, a thrilling drama for both teenage and adult audiences, tours to the egg theatre in Bath. Based on the play by William Shakespeare, the improbable becomes probable in this epic, adventurous romance filled with heroic strangers, sinister villains, ghosts, gods and long-lost brothers. Re-imagined as a rich, grandiose and vibrant tale of love, deception and warfare, Cymbeline is inspired by historical events from the subcontinent as it tells of a princess who is torn between the love for her father, a king, and her husband, a man below her status. Power, love and treachery are at the fore when the rebellious Princess Imogen risks her reputation and family honour by marrying without her father’s permission. When her husband falls prey to the manipulations of a rakish and smooth-talking womaniser, her loyalty is tarnished. Imogen is forced to swap her sari for breeches and flee from court with the kingdom in turmoil and the fate of a country at stake. Cymbeline is directed by Sâmir Bhamra, who has also adapted this production. The cast includes Nicholas Gauci, Tony Hasnath, Liz Jadav, Robby Khela, Sophie Levy and Adam Youssefbeygi. Recommended for anyone over the age of 13.

Heart-warming concert from children’s choir

A

fter stealing the hearts of the world during their uplifting performance of the number one single Sing with Gary Barlow at the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations last summer, the famous African Children’s choir has been invited back to tour Britain and will be singing at Bath Forum on Friday, October 25. The choir will be appearing with Connie Talbot from TV’s Britain’s Got Talent. The African Children’s Choir melts the hearts of audiences with their charming smiles, beautiful voices and lively African songs and dances. The programme features well-loved children’s songs, traditional spirituals and rhythmic gospel favourites. Nearly every performance is concluded with a thunderous standing ovation. In spite of the tragedy that has marred their young lives, the children are radiant with hope, musically gifted and always wonderfully entertaining.

Proceeds from choir performances allow the African Children’s Choir to raise global awareness of the plight of the millions of orphaned and abandoned children in Africa. Donations directly support the expansion of sponsorship and education programmes for both the current choir children and the thousands of other students they represent. Music for Life’s (the parent body of the African Children’s Choir) purpose is to help create new leadership for tomorrow’s Africa. The African Children’s Choir has been working with the most vulnerable children in Africa. The choir members have the additional benefit of international travel with the choir; this exposes them to a wide variety of people, places and perspectives. Their life’s experiences combined with a structured formal education give the children the necessary tools to change their lives and the lives of others. Visit www.bathforum.co.uk for more.

t|zpj Adam Kay at Komedia

Direct from a hugely successful total sell-out Edinburgh Festival Fringe, Adam Kay brings his brand new solo show to Komedia tonight. With a grand piano, a colourful vocabulary and a determination to score a number one hit single, his brand new collection is a wonderful combination of off-kilter smut, comedy and music. Amateur Transplants frontman Adam has built up a fan base the size of which most comedians would happily sell their kidneys for. With sell-out tours and Edinburgh Festival seasons, his cutting-edge, darkly humorous re-imaginings of modern day pop and rock classics have gained him a cult following across the UK. Former doctor Adam first appeared at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2005, and has since sold out Edinburgh runs every year since 2006. He has recorded four studio albums, and his recordings have consistently held Top Ten positions in the iTunes comedy charts since 2008. A proportion of album sales are donated to Macmillan Cancer Support, and he is proud to have donated in excess of £30,000 to date.

Lynette Yiadom-Boakye, as well as many of the other leading figurative artists of the last half-century. The exhibition considers the twin traditions of observation and invention in the painting of people. Arranged in two contrasting halves the exhibition compares artists and works rooted in the observable world with those who have invented characters or distorted actual subjects to create grotesques and monsters, from Peter Blake’s portrait of the fictional boxer Baron Kaiser and Francis Bacon’s imaginary portrait of Van Gogh to Hew Locke’s fantastical Medusa, based on the Queen. Kay’s killer debut novel

K

ay Leitch, a member of the Bath Writers Group, has written her debut novel Treasure This, a rip-roaring whodunit for kids aged 10 plus set in a rambling local mansion and involving more than a few dead bodies buried in the garden. Kay, former production editor of Cosmopolitan and The Sunday Times Magazine, is also a co-founder of Electrik Inc, an independent publishing collective based in Bath and founded by four professionals who met while taking an MA in Writing for Young People at Bath Spa University. Electrik Inc ensures that every book with their logo is professionally edited and proofread, so that readers can be assured of quality. At the centre of Kay’s first book is 12-year-old Addison, a sharp-witted, funny and hugely loveable heroine, who goes out one morning and finds a dead body in her aunt and uncle’s garden shed. From this explosive opening, a roller-coaster of action takes us into the heart of family secrets and lies, with more than a hint of dark farce along the way. Addy feels sure her lovely aunt and uncle couldn’t have done such an awful thing … could they? But when the body disappears and no-one believes a word Addy says, this modern-day Miss Marple is determined to find out what’s going on

– even if it leads her to more buried bodies. And it does. Treasure This is a gritty story which doesn’t shy away from tough issues. It’s much more than a whodunit. It throws up questions we all meet on our journey through life, about families, love, actions and consequences, secrets – good and bad – and that grey No Man’s Land in between. Poor Addy has to deal with all that, and worry about her maths exams too.

Find out exactly what went on in that garden shed – Treasure This is now available from Mr B’s Emporium of Reading Delights in Bath, Amazon print-on-demand and ebook at £6.75. After her high flying jobs in London Kay, who grew up in Glasgow before heading south, took voluntary redundancy about six years ago and decided to do an MA in Writing for Young People at Bath Spa University. Says Kay, 57: “This was the best year of my life! I loved it. Can't recommend it highly enough. Great tutors, great students, great setting. I took creative writing classes in The Castle. Can you imagine? “Since then, I've definitely been much poorer, but my life is much richer for living in Bath. I live in Lower Weston with my husband Malcolm.” As well as writing and working her new collective Kay also lovse dogs and do some dog walking when there’s a lull in the editing side of her life.

THE WEEKEND

Kingsmead Square is located in the heart of Bath and has become a popular destination for those hungry for good food. With plenty of independent cafes and restaurants, you’ll find something for every craving and budget. There are also some of the city’s favourite interior stores and the square is set to become even more pedestrian and cyclist friendly with new cycling routes thanks to Government cash, which has been secured as part of a regional bid. The Kingsmead area is also facing a facelift with plans for a new casino on Saw Close going on display soon. The casino development will include two restaurants and a hotel and will come quick on the heels of the £16-million Gainsborough Hotel tipped to become Bath’s most luxurious hotel and spa on Lower Borough Walls and the £11-million Premier Inn hotel at James Street West. The aim of the proposals is to make Kingsmead Square more of an attraction in its own right, increasing the number of people who visit and the length of their stays. Formal plans to turn the Square into an outdoor eating and drinking zone with performing arts space have also been submitted. The proposals to develop what the Bath Business Improvement District BID officials call a Continental-style cafe culture in the square have been submitted following months of talks with local businesses. Kingsmead Square is certainly an area set to become more popular.

JAZZ CAFE

The Jazz Cafe is a friendly independent family-run licensed cafe overlooking Kingsmead Square. They serve a wide variety of homemade dishes, fantastic English breakfasts, including the famous Jazz Café Big Breakfast, lunches from the Specials board, filled ciabattas and toasted sandwiches. Traditional tea fans could opt for toasted teacakes or scones. The menu is available all day, every day. They serve just drinks too! They don’t take bookings and they can get very busy.

Reworking of romance

T

he classic Shakespeare tale of the star-crossed lovers, Romeo & Juliet is back and this time its the turn of Julian Fellowes, (creator of Downton Abbey), to bring the tragic love story into the 21st century for modern audiences to enjoy. The story is set to follow the traditional Italian backdrop in which it was written but this version has gone where no others have. Fellowes made the questionable decision not to follow other adaptations and get rid of

Shakespeare’s traditional dialogue, which has set critics tongues wagging and caused controversy prior to the films release. Despite this, the plot mirrors Shakespeare’s original, starting with Romeo (Douglas Booth) meeting Juliet (Hailee Steinfeld) at a ball and the pair instantly falling deeply in love. On the discovery of their relationship, the feuding families of the couple try to come between the lovers which results in many violent face offs between the Montagues and Capulets and ends in death and destruction on the broken streets of Verona.

But what they don’t know is that their actions are just the start to the unravelling of tragic events that will impact the lives of everyone caught up in the whirlwind romance. Judging by the trailer Fellwoes reworking of the tale is a million miles away from Baz Luhrmann’s flamboyant version released 16 years ago. With a £15million budget and all-star cast, which also includes Paul Giamatti, Stellan Skarsgard and Ed Westwick, this new variation is set to be a box office smash, adding to the ever growing list of successful adaptations of the romantic legend.
