Hot in the city: Bath in Fashion Nicky Hancock from Bath in Fashion 2014 invites you to take your place in the FROW

L

ondon Fashion Week now generates reams of coverage in every glossy magazine and national newspaper with as much attention being given to the celebrities in the FROW and what they are wearing as the fashions on the catwalk. These fast-paced designer shows give buyers and media a flavour of collections for the next season and set the trend for high street fashion six months ahead. At Bath in Fashion the audience does not have to wait another six months to see the clothes in store – you can walk straight out and buy what you see. Shows are staged by top producer John Walford who has created runway shows over the years for Hussein Chalayan, Stella McCartney, Vivienne Westwood and Donna Karen. He has also organised shows for the Britain’s Top Model tours and was one of the founders of Graduate Fashion Week. We talked to John ahead of Bath in Fashion 2014. ’ Catwalks are an opportunity for everyone to see what is available in the shops and how good quality the clothes are when worn and seen in movement. Celebrities have in part been useful to designers as they have helped boost sales, but I hope this is a temporary trend as I’d like to see designers selling clothes because they are good rather than

because of who is sat in the front row. – Basically I have the job of co-ordinating and pulling everything together and to come up with the overall look, I try to make sure that no catwalk is ever the same, so you will always see something different visually. I cope with the pressure by making sure I have a good team of people to back me up. Yes, outside a palace in London, a beach in Italy, in a street in London and of course by the edge of the Roman Baths in Bath! We are very excited about the Designer catwalk show which is being sponsored by Nicholas Wylde. We are going to stage it completely differently to how we would normally so watch this space – go and buy your tickets! – There have been challenges in getting the clothes to fit the models. In the Sixties models were much slimmer and not as toned as they are now. The importance of BIBA and Barbara Hulanicki cannot be underestimated. She revolutionised shopping with quality mail order which ultimately led to internet shopping and was fundamental in bringing fun affordable clothes to the high street.

The quality of the shops in Bath is very high. Bath shoppers should appreciate how good the shops are and I believe people of Bath should do all they can to support them. – Bath is a very special and lovely city. One of the joys about Bath in Fashion is to be able to do interesting catwalk shows and form close relationships with the designers and of course meet lots of great people from Bath!

City’s businesses set to show off their stylish side

T

his year Bath in Fashion will be more interactive than ever before. As well as the usual programme of talks and catwalk shows, this year a Bath in Fashion Style Pavilion will be put up in Stall Street in the city centre giving visitors, and businesses, even more opportunities to get involved in the city’s most stylish event. The Pavilion made its Bath debut last year during the Great Bath Feast (another of the city-wide festivals run by the Bath Business Improvement District), when it hosted demonstrations, workshops and talks, and it will be playing a similar role during Bath in Fashion. It will be in place for the duration of the festival, from May 3 to 10. A number of businesses have already signed up to hosting events including a needle felting workshop from local artisan maker Emma Leith, festival flower head dress making from florist Rachael

The Bath Chronicle Weekend Magazine will also be hosting some events - details will be released very soon. Each “slot” is two hours long, and Bath BID is encouraging businesses to sign up to take one of the remaining slots. Les Redwood, project Manager at Bath BID, said: “The Bath in Fashion Style Pavilion will provide an ideal promotional platform for any business right in the heart of the city centre, in one of the highest footfall areas of the city. “Businesses can book a two hour slot in order to promote themselves. We are looking for high quality and interesting events that will excite and reward key customers or attract new business. “Examples are workshops, talks, styling advice, demonstrations or even a fashionable cocktails and canapés evening – there are eight slots available in the evenings for the city’s fashionable restaurants and bars to take advantage of. “The Style Pavilion will be licensed for alcohol, fully carpeted, lined and decorated with power, AV, tables and 50 chairs provided. It will be possible to do demonstrations and talks with a TV screen and PA system available. “Businesses just need to bring their own branding and equipment as appropriate. All of this is available for a small fee of £150 plus VAT. “There will also be a PR and publicity campaign to support the Style Pavilion and the businesses booked in. Spaces are going fast and this is a first come first served basis.” Businesses interested need to contact Les Redwood at Bath BID by emailing les.redwood@bathbid.co.uk by April 14.

wenty years ago fashion designer Ralph Lauren called upon the fashion industry to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer charities across the globe after he lost his close friend to the disease and Fashion Targets Breast Cancer was born. Two years later, in 1996, Fashion Targets Breast Cancer was launched in the UK in 1996 by Breakthrough Breast Cancer and since then it has raised more than £13 million for Breakthrough’s life-saving work. This year’s campaign, which celebrates strong female role models, began this week (on April 7) and women across Britain are being urged to wear their support for the charity by buying products designed for the campaign. Marks & Spencer, River Island, Warehouse, Topshop, Laura Ashley, Debenhams and Superga have all designed exclusive products for the campaign with each carrying a minimum 30 per cent donation. The collection encompasses some of

SS14’s most covetable trends. Colourpopping Pastel Sundae will give a fresh burst to British wardrobes; On Target showcases the campaign’s iconic monochrome style; and Breezy Daze will have laid-back outfits looking effortlessly stylish. A spokesman for the charity said: “We are only as strong as our supporters. The 2014 campaign needs you to commit to the fight against breast cancer, be a role model and Wear Your Support with pride. “Fashion Targets Breast Cancer is the UK's leading charity fashion campaign. Now in its eighteenth year in the UK, the campaign raises vital funds for Breakthrough Breast Cancer. Today there are 550,000 people living with a diagnosis of this disease; taking in to account their £ loved ones, the number of people affected by breast cancer in the UK runs in to the millions. “We need you to take action and Wear Your Support to stop women getting, and dying from, this disease.” The Fashion Targets Breast Cancer items will only be available for six weeks. ■ For more information visit www.fashiontargetsbreastcancer.org.uk or follow @FashionTargets on Twitter.

Save energy, save the world Every year people waste hundreds, if not thousands of pounds worth of energy in their homes. Draughty doors, wonky windows, leaving your TV on standby, could all be costing you more than you think, according to Location, Location, Location’s, Phil Spencer. “Why bother saving energy? It’s simple really,” said Phil. “It saves money. And without being too New Age about it, to save the world. “We are wasting a huge amount of energy and there’s only a certain amount that the planet can create. “But it can be hard for people to identify where they are wasting energy. We know when we are wasting water or food because we can see it, but energy is invisible. “Npower’s research shows that an average household could save themselves around £400 a year, just by taking some quite obvious measures. “Loft insulation costs around £300 for a typical house, but it saves around £180 a year so will pay for itself in less than two years. “Only 31 per cent of houses in the Bristol area have loft insulation “Cavity wall insulation costs £500 and saves around £140 a year so that pays

for itself in four years. “Make sure you turn your appliances off rather than just leaving them on standby, and there’s no need to have

your dishwasher on a really high temperature and the same applies to your washing machine. They are only small things, but the small things add up.” Buildings in Bath might be beautiful, but for those with Listed status, making changes can be difficult. But Phil says that owners of Listed buildings shouldn’t be deterred. “My advice to people living in Listed buildings is to contact npower who can arrange for an assessor to visit. They will be able to see where the energy is being lost and offer advice on what can be done.” And according to Phil, saving energy won’t just save you money. It could help you sell your house in the future. “It’s good to be ahead of the game,” he said. “It’s not out of the realms of possibility that by the time you come to sell your home you will also have to demonstrate how much it costs to run. Equally, when you are looking to buy a house ask how energy efficient it is.”

When worlds collide

F

ashion and Interiors; two of my great loves, which is why I do the job I do as a stylist for both but I often wonder how they come together. Interior trends aren’t as fast moving as fashion, but are clearly influenced by fashion trends albeit at a slower pace, although in recent years the interiors industry has picked up the pace and fashion trends are being pursued and translated in to all sorts of wonderful creations faster than they used to. Having spent a vast amount of my life in the creative industry I’m pleased to be part of an era that is bringing the two closer than I’ve known before. On the flip side of interiors being influenced by fashion, one high street fashion brand that has been influenced by a renowned interior designer in the past is Ted Baker. In 2010 Nina Campbell collaborated with the popular label to create signature yet exclusive prints weaving together a strong presence in apparel with soft fluid dresses in the popular Orchard Blossom print. Such collaborations of which are

18 THE WEEKEND

Fashion and interiors stylist Emmeline Stevens talks about how fashion and interior design are coming closer together

becoming increasingly popular. Take Matthew Williamson’s bold, bright eclectic range in Debenhams for example – an ongoing collection of household accessories that never fail to impress. Although we are seeing more labels on the high street influenced by interiors, there are many jumping on the

www.bathchronicle.co.uk

band wagon and creating their own interior collections; French Connection, Monsoon, Zara to name but a few. Slowly, these worlds are collaborating and influencing each other which is a breath of fresh air and why not? There’s mileage in it for everyone. So in reality, do the two come together? how do we style our homes compared to styling ourselves? In most cases the home is a reflection of our personality, we often dress it in a way that promotes a positive and comfortable vibe, surrounding ourselves with possessions from the past; nostalgic things that make it feel like ‘home’ and things that don’t need to be renewed as often as the contents of our wardrobes. Fashion moves far quicker

ovtlz

so the need to spend in the wardrobe is often greater even though there’s no doubt we don’t utilise our clothes as much as we should. This season, back on the fashion catwalk, Spring Summer 2014 colours bring us a new wave of pastels, yellow is a big hit and only recently many are discovering how fresh grey can be when combined with either of these. Prints are strong and full of abundance which is never overlooked in interiors. Whatever floats your boat, I’m not sure that a large percentage of the population will be rushing to change their curtains and wall coverings to follow the fast pace of fashion, but I’m confident the fresh windows of high street fashion stores will inspire many bringing these creative industries closer together. Either way, both worlds are influenced by who we are and our lifestyle and surroundings. But the question is: how do the two come together for you? How do you dress your home? Are you inspired by fashion/interior trends or simply follow your mood? I’d love to hear your views and comments, email me direct:

Make the most of a roast The Sunday roast is a great British tradition. Sadly though, according to research by Welsh Lamb, it’s a tradition that’s dying out – with only two per cent of Brits sitting down to eat a weekly Sunday roast dinner every week. But despite this, the study of 1,000 people revealed that two-thirds of the nation feel that eating Sunday lunch or having dinner together is their most favourite way to bring the family together. And what better time to bring the family together than Easter? So if you do decide to cook your family a feast this Easter you’ll know what to do!

he people of Bath like a drink – it’s official. Bibendum, which supplies drinks to restaurants, pubs, bars and hotels across the UK has conducted a survey that shows that in Bath we are more willing to part with our cash when it comes to our favourite tipple than anywhere else in the South West, spending on average 16 percent more on wine, 16 percent more on spirits, and 21 per cent more on fizz. Perhaps this explains why, when in other parts of the country pubs are shutting up shop, the city’s food and drink sector is thriving. So when we’re presented with a wine list or standing in front Wul pu of the supermarket shelves lpno{ what drives our decisions iv{{slz vm when we’re ~pul zvsk selecting pu {ol ]S wine? hyl yvzl According to research 70 per cent of people believe

grape variety is an important part of the decision making process when buying wine. Pinot Grigio tops the charts when it comes to most popular grape varietals in Bath with Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet not far behind, with most of the wine consumed coming from Australia, Chile and France. But the experts at Bibendum are encouraging people to try something different with their new app, Plonk, which helps people pick out new grape varieties based on their flavour preferences. A spokeswoman from Bibendum said: “When choosing a wine people tend to just stick with what they know but there is so much out there just waiting to be discovered.

“Plonk can help suggest other varieties that you might like so it’s not simply a matter of taking a shot in the dark.” But while Bibendum are encouraging people to spread their wine wings, they are also encouraging people to revisit flavours of the past that they might previously have discounted – like Lambrusco. “In the past there was a lot of bad Lambrusco around,” said a spokesman. “Because the Italians kept all the good grapes for themselves! “But now we are seeing a resurgence and there are some good ones coming on to the market. “We still wouldn’t recommend picking up cheap bottles from the supermarket, but if you see Lambrusco on a wine list, don’t discount it straight away. If you’re not sure then ask the sommelier. A good sommelier will

Soap star to stage star

N

Natalie Imbruglia has had success as a pop singer and star of both the big and little screen. Now she is making her British stage debut in Alan Ayckbourn’s Things We Do For Love which opens in Bath made her name in this country as a teenage star in Neighbours, said: “I was in LA, so I had to do the audition by Skype – very modern! When Laurence Boswell, the director offered me the role, I was like, ‘Really? How amazing! You actually want me to do it – I wasn’t expecting that!’” This is all new to Natalie. All the same, the exceptionally versatile and gifted performer, who had a global hit single with Torn, has been relishing the rehearsal process. “Wow, I’m just loving the rehearsals. It’s been so fulfilling to learn about acting. There’s so much I didn’t know about it. But it’s brought me great joy.” With admirable modesty, Natalie adds that, “I’m definitely the rookie in this company. I’m sure the other actors were wondering how it was going to be to have a singer join them. I’m sure they had certain preconceived ideas about how I could be. So it’s really nice that we

atalie Imbruglia is even more beautiful in person than in photographs. She looks fresh and flawless and it is no surprise to learn that she was ranked number six in a 2004 poll of the 100 most naturally beautiful women ever. Wispy hair frames her gorgeous features, which burst into life when she starts to discuss how thrilled she is to be starring opposite Claire Price, Edward Bennett and Simon Gregor in Things We Do For Love. “I have to keep pinching myself,” Natalie exclaims. “How did I end up here? I can’t tell you how excited I am about it!” In Things We Do For Love, Natalie plays Nikki, a trusting, slightly naive, but unremittingly positive woman who comes with her fiancé Hamish to live in the flat above her old school friend Barbara. Hamish and Barbara are polar opposites and really do not hit it off. But their relationship soon develops in the most unexpected way. The actress landed the role in the play – which opens at the Theatre Royal in Bath on April 16 before touring the country – in a decidedly unconventional manner. Natalie had been intensively studying acting for two and a half years in Los Angeles when she got the call to audition for the role of Nikki. The 39-year-old Australian, who first

are getting on so well. They can see that I’m a team player. They’re all brilliant – they’re such professionals. It’s great to work with very experienced actors who really know what they’re doing. In the rehearsal room, I’m like a sponge.” “I think the other actors are relieved that I haven’t turned up with a massive entourage. I don’t like a fanfare. There’s no need for that, I’ve never needed that kind of craziness.” Natalie has particularly enjoyed working with Laurence, who has been the artistic director of the Theatre Royal Bath’s Ustinov Studio since 2011. “I can’t say enough great things about

Xpj{|ylB Rvou [~huulss

Laurence,” declares Natalie, whose album, Left of the Middle, sold seven million copies worldwide and won her three Grammy nominations and two Brit Awards. “He’s been brilliant. He’s incredibly thorough. His ability to break down a text and give you so much food for thought to take home is such a blessing. He is a fantastic and generous director.” Natalie, who co-starred in the 2003 film Johnny English with Rowan Atkinson and made her leading actress debut in the 2009 movie, Closed for Winter, has also revelled in the fact that Things We Do For Love is a comedy. “When people laugh in

the rehearsal room, it feels great. Even though people say it’s more difficult to do humour, it’s nice that my first-ever play is a comedy. “Everyone else in the cast is so ridiculously funny that I’m already excited about hearing the audience laugh with them and being part of that. There’s nothing wrong with doing a very serious play, but I’m chuffed that my first play is a comedy. I love that audience interaction.” The actress, who grew up in Australia and remains very close to her parents and three sisters, really understood her character. “I very much identify with Nikki. She’s an optimist and a dreamer – and there is an element of that in me. There are parts of me that have Nikki’s sensibility. It’s always useful to relate a character back to yourself. “Nikki always sees the best in people. At the start of the play, she wants to go back to her roots and to stay with her school friend. She wants to return to a place that is all warm and fuzzy. She is eager to start over and is very excited about introducing her new man to her best friend from school. She’s very sentimental. She believes in love.” Despite being a globally renowned singer, Natalie admits that she still falls prey to butterflies before a show. “Nerves never go away. Part of being a performer is those insecurities. That’s true of even the most incredibly talented people. I’ve read that before every job, Meryl Streep

is terrified. If you don’t feel that, you become arrogant. “The vulnerability of an artist drives them to better themselves and pushes them to work harder. I’ve set myself a big challenge here. But I like to do that. Why not? Dare to fail.” Natalie’s particularly excited about the tour schedule for Things We Do For Love. “When I used to tour as a singer, I did the classic thing of going to my hotel room with a lemon tea and resting my vocal cords while the band went out to look around a new city. I never got to see anywhere. So I’m really excited to have the opportunity to see all these places now. “I love Bath. I worked at Peter Gabriel’s studio nearby and used to drive through the city. I’m very excited to be going back and to have time to really look around.”

Tracking tomorrow’s trends

A

few years ago, I used to run a vintage clothing boutique. Not wishing to boast, but due to its brilliance it won a few awards – and as a result, I became, for a brief period, a ‘fashion expert.’ I was asked to judge design competitions, give talks, and host events in my new guise, where I would give a detailed overview of fashion history, or comment for radio and TV on whichever current catwalk fashion was based on an old one. Ironically, despite attending glittery parties and fashion shows where models with huge heads and tiny thoraxes teetered down the catwalk like unsteady giant ants, I never felt truly fashionable. Probably because I wasn’t. I loved clothes and I loved style, and I was fascinated by the history and psychology of dress, but being in fashion seemed to me to be a somewhat doomed enterprise. Not least because as soon as you’re in fashion, you’re out again, in the time it takes to sketch a different skirt length. The women who invest in haute couture; who actually go to the Paris shows with the intention of owning those astonishing garments, are the only people left who think it’s worth spending the price of a sports car on a coat, or purchasing a skirt encrusted with jewels that means you can’t sit down.

34 THE WEEKEND

Flic Everett talks style over substance and takes a look at the fashion world with one eye on next month’s Bath in Fashion Being at the sharp-edged vanguard of fashion, to them, is so essential that practical considerations go out of the atelier window. But for most of us, we’re content with a watered-down, commercialised take on whatever the great designers have decreed is in.

www.bathchronicle.co.uk

We might venture an M&S cerise coat, because Vogue insisted that thinking pink was key for spring, or perhaps a pair of wedges if Elle says stilettoes are over. Until next season, at any rate. While this half-heated attempt to keep up with trends does no harm, I wonder how much good it does. Because past a certain age (say, 30) I’m wondering who wants to spend a fortune they don’t have, simply to resemble a diluted version of a B list celebrity? And even if you manage to look A list, and are wearing the very latest Paris Modes, there’s already a fashion buyer sending an email arranging to send back the dregs of your current ‘look’ and replace it with next season’s infinitely more fashionable collection. That’s why, while high fashion is a glorious and glittering spectacle, for the average dress-lover, finding what suits you is infinitely more important. Beautifully made vintage clothes, a ten year old dress from a charity shop that fits perfectly, a one-off ’50s handbag you found at a jumble sale; these are the items that make a look memorable. Bath in Fashion will be fun, exciting and inspiring. But in the end, none of us are truly in fashion for long. Far better to embrace the words of legendary designer Yves St Laurent; “Fashions fade – style is eternal.”

The collection features perfect desk to dinner dresses, and relaxed separates, every design is made using top quality yarns and fabrics and the attention to fit is equal to the luxury brands. The company is only a year old, but has already attracted a loyal clientele including Harry Potter actress Emma Watson who was spotted leaving the Oscars in a stylish Winser trench coat. The complete Winser London collection will be located in the basement of Rossiters – alongside fashion accessories and a chic edit of homewares. Winserlondon.com is an online offering and is Kim Winser’s first e-commerce venture. Cocktails as cool as ice It was a rather chilly reception at the launch of Coba Cocktails at Bath Cricket Club. Because the instead of being served in a glass, the cocktails created by entrepreneur Crispin Shingler, were instead served on a stick – as ice lollies. Crispin has taken classic cocktails such as Cosmopolitan, White Russian, Margherita, Caipirinha and Moscow Mule and turned them into ice lollies to create a tasty grown-up version of a favourite childhood treat. At the party held to celebrate the launch of the business guests enjoyed sampling all the delicious flavours of ice lolly.

Mission’s sizzling summer season

T

46 THE WEEKEND

o celebrate the 20th birthday of her Next Stage Theatre Company, artistic director Ann Garner is presenting her most ambitious project yet. Next month the company performs Alan Ayckbourn’s diptych or linked pair of plays House and Garden in the Mission Theatre, the company’s home in Bath city centre. The pair of plays is the highlight of the theatre’s new programme which offers a sizzling summer season of theatrical and musical delights. House and Garden are designed to be staged simultaneously, with the same cast in adjacent auditoria – in this case the main theatre and the upstairs theatre at the Mission. House takes place in the drawing room, and Garden in the grounds, of a large country house. Each play is self-contained although each refers more or less obliquely to events in the other and they may be attended in either order. As is typical of his work, Ayckbourn portrays the mostly bittersweet relationships between more or less unhappy, upper-middle-class people. The

www.bathchronicle.co.uk

title is a tongue-in-cheek reference to the magazine House & Garden, in which country houses and gardens are often portrayed as idyllic, peaceful places. Ayckbourn is of course patron of the Next Stage Theatre Company and a long standing friend of Ann and the whole company of players. The Mission’s new season opens this month with JB Priestley’s An Inspector Calls from Tin Shed Theatre. The play begins as a prosperous family enjoy an evening’s celebration. But then a late night caller introducing himself as a police inspector arrives – after which everyone’s secrets are revealed in quick succession. An adaptation of Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew is performed by RumDoxy Theatre in late May while Spanner in the Works perform a work called Notorious. In this Patricia Downey play the company explores those who have left their mark on the world – whether for good or ill. Figures as different as Abraham Lincoln and Charles Manson and Emmeline Pankhurst and Myra Hindley are examined. Novato Dance Company is back with its

annual dance spectacular Pulse while Novato Theatre performs Her Posted Memory. This is another show devised by the company set around a dinner party where the family struggles to remember a night which might alter their entire relationship.

Bunbury is Dead is a brand new comedy drawing on the wit and works of Oscar Wilde and follows the escapades of Algenon’s fictitious invalid from The Importance of Being Earnest. Tobacco Tea Theatre bring the show to Bath in late June. There is a family friendly opera with Englebert Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel in late June while in early July Next Stage Theatre is back on stage again this time with Oh What A Lovely War. The show commemorates the 100 year anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War and continues Next Stage’s own birthday celebrations. Oh What a Lovely War is packed with jaunty songs and fast paced actions which was turned into a hugely successful film. In mid July Zenith Youth Theatre gives a special charity concert while the Mission season comes to a close with Jane Austen’s Persuasion: A New Musical Drama. The new look at one of the famous novels of all time is performed by Chamber Opera Chicago.

There you can meet Sheherazade, the greatest storyteller of them all. She has a feast of adventures and fantasies to tell involving genies, villains, heroes and princesses. But she must keep her husband the king entertained with her stories to save her own life and the lives of all the maidens of the land. Will Ali Baba’s encounter with the 40 thieves do the trick? Can the story of Aladdin and his lamp help her live to tell more tales such as the Little Beggar

or the Fisherman and the Genie? Story Pocket Theatre was set up in 2013 from a passion to produce beautiful, wonderful and magical theatre for families. Third Children’s Laureate and patron of this exciting new theatre company, Michael Morpurgo explains why he has chosen to pledge his support: “I am delighted to be the Patron of Story Pocket Theatre Company. Keeping the Faith

ickets for Paloma Faith's 21-date autumn, which includes a return visit to Bath, went on sale last Friday. Following the captivating chanteuse's V Festival warm-up show at the Pavilion last summer, Paloma will play the Forum on Thursday, November 20. The Hackney-born singer draws on diverse influences from her colourful past, including working as a magician’s assistant, actress, burlesque performer

and trained contemporary dancer, and uses unconventional theatricals and props to make her stage shows original, engaging and magical. Released in 2009, debut album, Do You Want the Truth, or Something Beautiful? introduced Paloma and a glossy ensemble of retro-referencing soul and sassy pop songs. From the brass-blasted stomp of Stone Cold Sober to the quirky Upside Down and the epic sweep of New York, the record went on to sell over half a million copies. Paloma’s 2012 sophomore album, Fall To Grace, continued to build upon the success of her debut release - scoring hits with singles Picking Up the Pieces, 30 Minute Love Affair, Just Be and her enchanting cover of Never Tear Us Apart. The new single, Only Love Can Hurt Like This (released on May 12), is taken from Paloma’s third album A Perfect Contradiction, which shot straight to number two when it was released in March, and hasn’t shown any sign of moving from the top ten since. A Perfect Contradiction marks a change in sound for Paloma. She said: “Its tone is the very opposite of what the last album was. There are a couple of melancholy moments, sure, but it’s much more a ‘if it’s all gone wrong, never mind, let’s have a dance’ kind of record.” Paloma wrote a lot of the album whilst living in New York last year, and completed the recording process between there, Miami, LA and London. As well as the older sounds she has always adored, Paloma channelled Eryka Badu and Jill Scott, The Fugees

and N.E.R.D. One of the benchmarks for the album was Candi Staton’s classic Young Hearts Run Free: a song in which the lyrics speak of sadness, but the delivery leaves you feeling absolutely empowered: “I’ve been reflecting on things that have been tough, but I’m almost celebrating that. If you haven’t been to the bottom, you wouldn’t be able to recognise how it feels to feel really amazing, after all.” For more information visit www.palomafaith.com, To book tickets visit www.bathforum.co.uk

f you’re looking for a family fun during the Easter holidays you can’t go far wrong with a trip to the cinema but with the family release schedule equalling two notable new releases, Divergent and Spiderman 2, it’s slim pickings. Luckily the DVD release schedule is a little more enticing and has many advantages over the cinema when it comes to watching with the whole family. You can talk as loud as you want, eat whatever you like and even pause the movie if you need to use the bathroom or let the dog out. First up we have The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. This is the second instalment of The Hobbit trilogy from director Peter Jackson and while it is a little on the long side, there’s enough action to keep the younger ones ticking along. It also boasts an all star cast including Sherlock stars Martin Freeman and Benedict Cumberbatch. Continuing almost right where the first film left off, it follows the adventures of Bilbo, Gandalf and the Dwarves as the journey towards the lonely mountain to reclaim

their homeland. It’s well paced, well directed and probably the best of Lord of the Rings movies so far. The Secret Life of Walter Mitty is another star studded film that will leave you with a warm glow. An adaptation of James Thurber’s classic novel, this is one of Ben Stiller’s best dramatic movies. Walter Mitty will hit a chord with everyone in the family, telling the story of an anonymous office worker that uses his daydreams to escape his boring life. When his job, and the job of his love interest, are threatened he has to embark on a journey in the real world that rivals that of his day dreams. As well as being an enjoyable ride it’s also really well shot, offering wonderful visuals the whole family can enjoy. Another family favourite to watch with slightly older children is Philomena. Written by Steve Coogan, it picked up Best Adapted Screenplay at this year’s BAFTA awards. The movie tells the story of journalist Martin Sixsmith who decides to write a story of Philomena, who had her son taken away when she was a teenage inmate of a Catholic

convent. The assignment eventually leads to America and along the way, Martin and Philomena discover as much about each other as about her son’s fate. While the subject matter is a bit heavy, the movie is well worth a watch. The final film you simply have to pick up this Easter is Gravity. I know, this has been out on DVD for a couple of weeks now but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t absolutely go out now and watch it. The movie won a string of awards here and across the Atlantic and rightfully so. Directed by Alfonso Cuarón, Gravity is a harrowing ride of a lone astronaut trying to get back to earth. There’s enough all round action to keep everyone happy so it’s a firm favourite to please the crowd come family movie night. [ht Jyhksl

Big flicks at The Little

s I’ve said, the new release schedule for the Easter holidays is more than a little sparse if you’re thinking about a trip to the local multiplex. But this doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be heading out to enjoy a day at the movies. Ever the champion of proper cinemas, with projectionists and comfy seats, here’s my guide to the hidden gems that’ll be popping up at Bath’s very own Little Cinema. First up is the darkly hilarious and gripping Calvary starring Brendan Gleeson as Father James Lavelle, a small town priest whose life is threatened during a routine confessional. As events unfold we see the Father’s compassion and intent on making the world a better place tested by the actions behaviour of the inhabitants his small community. Calvary is the third offering from John Michael McDonough, writer and director of The Guard which also starred Gleeson and is the most financially successful Irish film of all time. Aside from Brendan Gleeson, Calvary has a great cast including Moon Boy funnyman Chris O’Dowd who really shows off what a great range he has beyond comic relief. Calvary will run from Friday, April 11. I don’t care what people think, Pierce

Brosnan was a much better James Bond than everyone remembers. But going from any kind of acting to playing the hardman is easy, anyone can do it, going the other way is much harder. Brosnan is just about managing it with Mama Mia being at least enjoyable if nothing else.

His latest offering The Love Punch looks about the same fare, enjoyable with a few laughs along the way. I’d be nervous but Brosnan is starring alongside Emma Thompson who is just about the best person to steady any kind of comedy. The pair play a divorced couple who set out to steal back their retirement money but find they’re much more compatible than they remember. The Love Punch will run from Friday, April 18. If documentaries are more your thing then The Little has just thing for you in 20 Feet from Stardom, one of those documentaries you can’t help but sit down and watch. It focuses on the careers of the backing singers to some of the biggest musical acts of our time. The film has interviews with the backing singers as well as megastars like Mick Jagger, Stevie Wonder and Bruce Springsteen. While I don’t think it should’ve beat The Act of Killing to Best Documentary at the Oscars, 20 Feet… is an astonishing piece of work, highlighting a whole world that lingers just out of sight but not out of earshot. 20 Feet from Stardom will run from Friday, April 11. Last but not least there is a special showing of children’s classic Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory which will run on April 14, 17 and 18. [ht Jyhksl
