This month is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The statistics surrounding this disease are shocking. There are an estimated 550,000 people living in the UK today who have had a diagnosis of breast cancer, every year nearly 12,000 people die because of it and 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime. But if these figures weren’t enough to show how important it is to support Breast Cancer Care in their work to help anyone affected by breast cancer, then read our article on pages 4 and 5, about not just the physical, but also emotional affects that the disease can have.

EDITORIAL Lynne Fernquest This is a cause that is very close to my heart. Before I was born, my aunt was diagnosed with breast cancer. Back then treatment was nowhere near as advanced as it is now, but she was one of the lucky ones and is now in her 80s and still going strong. There are many other aunts, sisters, nieces, daughters and mothers that have not fared so well however. And for every one of them I urge you to do your bit to support Breast Cancer Awareness Month this October.

Feeling feminine after cancer fight

B

reast cancer survival rates in the UK are higher than ever. Around 55,000 people are diagnosed each year, but fewer than 12,000 now die from breast cancer annually. Naturally, cancer survivors have a lot to be thankful for, but that doesn’t mean that life after breast cancer is problem-free. For this year’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Breast Cancer Care is aiming to highlight the body confidence problems that are so common for people overcoming the disease, and the help that’s available to them. “The physical and emotional impact of this disease and its treatment cannot be underestimated or trivialised,” stresses Samia Al Qadhi, chief executive of Breast Cancer Care. “Breast cancer can deal a crushing blow to a woman’s self-esteem, body image and relationships when she may be at her lowest ebb, and this can persist for many years.” Ismena Clout has had breast cancer for nine years, and for much of this time she suffered in silence about the huge changes to her body. Diagnosed at the age of 29, she underwent a single mastectomy but didn’t have reconstructive surgery as her cancer was aggressive and she urgently needed chemotherapy, and then “I just wanted to get on and live”. Afterwards, she kept her angst about her altered appearance to herself. “I didn’t make the most of the help that was on offer, and that affected me quite heavily afterwards,” she explains. The treatment had also caused her to gain weight, and she adds: “I went into a

big depression, and I can attribute a lot of that to needing to find who I was again.” Nearly three years ago, after more than six years in remission, Clout, found she had secondary breast cancer. It’s in her bones, liver, and a lymph node in her chest. Although it wasn’t in her remaining breast, she elected to have it removed 18 months ago, because she “wanted to be even”. She urges anyone dealing with the aftermath of breast cancer to use all the help available. “I want my confidence back,” she stresses. “I want to go out and look fabulous, I want to feel like I’m a woman and have my femininity. “It’s so hard because breast cancer affects all the main areas classed as the most feminine – your hair, weight, breasts. Saying ‘Aren’t you just happy to be alive?’ is far too simple.”

Go girly this season with fashion’s lipstick-inspired shades. From pretty to punk, Lisa Haynes reveals how to pull off pink. It’s the surprise colour for autumn that has created a (candyfloss light) style stampede. Pastel pink is ‘the’ must-have hue on every fashion editor’s It List. Put aside Barbie doll connotations and give pink the colour credibility it’s due. Design houses including Lanvin, Dior, Celine and Miu Miu all paraded blush hues on the international catwalks, breaking away from the traditional black, navy and grey winter palette. It’s official, this season, pink is the new black. Brighten up the gloomy days of winter with a pink coat for an instant rosy glow. Pink cover-ups come in every shade imaginable from barely-there blush, that works in the same way as a neutral, through to electrifying neon, to really make a statement. The paler the shade, the less practical the coat, especially if you’re prone to spills and stains. For the coolest silhouette, balance out the prettiness of the pink with an

androgynous oversized shape. Bubblegum pinks are the standout tones for autumn and can look elegant and grown-up for evening or officewear. Look for unexpected fabrics and textures to create interest in your outfit, like sequins and faux fur – this contrast will work especially well if you’re planning a top-to-toe pink look. Think fluffy pink angora jumper teamed with a vinyl pink pencil skirt. Don’t forget you can introduce prints to your pinks too. A traditional tartan check suddenly looks fresh and contemporary for winter set against an icy pastel pink. Pink doesn’t have to mean uber-pretty and girly. If you want a stronger look, steer clear of dusty tones and pick out the punchier pinks like fuchsia, neon and raspberry. These tones are the perfect tag team with black and grey, especially if you can’t get your head around the idea of wearing pastels in winter. If bright pinks can’t persuade you to part company with your dark wardrobe, punctuate your outfit instead. You can still stay on the rebellious side of pink with hardware details, like studs, to add an edge.

Heaths & heather for winter weather

S

maller shrubs provide the essential structure of most gardens and, as we move into autumn and winter, they deliver much of the visual interest too. But the value and uses of garden shrubs are more extensive than you might initially think. Did you know, for example, that oil derived from the Gaultheria shrub (common name checkerberry or mountain tea plant) is used to flavour some toothpastes and chewing gum? Shrubs like this are also important for bringing bio-diversity to the garden. Birds, insects and small mammals love their flowers and berries.

Ready for festive fun?

Gaultheria is a great starting point in our exploration of compact shrubs. The evergreen leaves and striking red

8

berries are the perfect complement for the festive season, so it makes a wonderful ‘Christmas’ plant. They’re ideal in pots as winter decoration for patios or balconies, but are also excellent as ground cover or for growing beneath larger trees and shrubs. Gaultheria really is an all-year round plant, with its pretty white flowers in June and bright red berries, and beautiful purple-colored leaves in autumn and winter. Gaultheria procumbens (an RHS Award of Garden Merit holder) is easy to grow and very hardy, as well as delivering wonderful visual benefits. You may also want to look at Pernettya – a similar compact evergreen. Shrubs love to be planted in the autumn when the soil is still warm but their metabolisms are slowing down. This is also the time when garden centres carry their best

stocks – so timing is perfect!

Scent of spring

Skimmia is a fantastic choice of compact shrub. Plant now in time for Christmas, and enjoy the scent of spring before it arrives. Skimmia is distantly related to the lemon and orange, which explains the characteristic citrus fragrance of the leaves. Another great balcony or patio plant, Skimmia comes in white, cream and pink varieties. It is the female plants that are berry-bearing, but they must have male cultivars nearby to produce a crop. Skimmia japonica ‘Rubella’ is a sure-fire winner.

A magical shrub?

It used to be believed that the way that cold intensifies the colours of Leucothoe had to be an indication of magical qualities. What is for certain

is that this evergreen, hardy shrub occurs in many beautiful colours including green, cream , yellow, pink, red and purple. Low-growing varieties are great as ground cover (e.g. Leucothoe ‘ Zeblid‘). For a taller, border plant look out for Leucothoe ‘Walteri’. Leucothoe is renowned for its beautiful autumn

coloring. Remember that the more sun the plant gets, the more intense are the colours of its leaves. So, plant in moist, well-drained acidic soil, as far as possible in full sun.

Heaths and heathers

Closely related but distinctly different, Calluna vulgaris, or heather, flowers mainly in late summer and autumn, whereas Erica or heath predominantly flowers in winter or spring. Both grow best in moist, well-drained acidic soil. Erica carnea f. alba ‘Springwood White’ flowers in winter through to spring and is an RHS Award of Garden Merit plant. For autumn flowers, go for Calluna vulgaris ‘Beoley Gold’, which is also an AGM plant. Explore and investigate this wonderful plant group at your local garden centre and be sure to find space for some of them in your garden. Remember, even if your soil is not quite right for these acid-lovers, you can work ericaceous compost into your soil or grow in containers. Either way, beautiful little shrubs like these will bring you enjoyment right through the months when many other plants are sleeping. Visit www.colour-your-life.co.uk for more plant stories and practical, as well as information on gardening and plants.

mvvk / kypur How to make it ■ Roast Pork Thigh with a Spicy Chocolate Sauce – serves four ■ Ingredients 2 tbsp of Hotel Chocolat Pure Cocoa Bean Shavings 1kg boneless leg of pork, skin removed, rolled and tied 2 tbsp of soft honey 1 tbsp of tomato puree 1 clove of garlic crushed 2 tsp grated ginger Salt and pepper for seasoning ■ Method: Mix together the chocolate, honey, tomato purée, crushed garlic and grated ginger, as this creates the marinade for the pork. Create a large incision into the pork of about 3 inches and stuff the pork with the marinade and then rub the rest of the marinade all around the pork.

Wrap the pork in cling film to allow the marinade to soak into the pork. Leave to marinade in the fridge for 24 hours. Take pork out of the fridge an hour before cooking to allow the pork to rise to room temperature. Preheat oven to 180/ gas mark 4. Roast in oven for 1 and a half to 2 hours, until golden brown and crisp. Check pork every 25mins and re-baste when desired to stop the pork becoming dry. At the end of the cooking time, pierce the thickest part of the meat with a skewer, if the juices come out clear, remove from the oven, cover in aluminium foil and rest in a warm place for 10 minutes. Carve and serve. Season as Preferred ■ Recipe from Morning to Midnight by Hotel Chocolat. Available from www.hotelchocolat.co.uk or stores nationwide

14 THE WEEKEND

Chocs away for chocolate week This week is National Chocolate Week, but while most people only think of chocolate as a sweet treat, it can also be used as a savoury ingredient, as this recipe for pork with a spicy chocolate sauce, from high street chocolatiers Hotel Chocolat, shows. A look at culinary history reveals that chocolate has long been used in savoury dishes as well, and recent research on taste offers some good reasons to bring back the tradition. In Latin America and Africa chocolate is regularly used in savoury dishes. It was only after chocolate was imported to Europe in the 1500s that it was first combined with sugar, but that doesn’t mean that European chefs didn’t use it in savoury dishes as well. As chocolate migrated from the Iberian Peninsula into Italy and France, it was most often served with game and in braised dishes: hare, venison, and

duck. Indeed, adding small amounts of bittersweet chocolate or cocoa powder to such stews, either at the beginning of the cooking process or at the end, lends complexity and colour. Another early European use for chocolate was in agrodolce (literally “sour and sweet”), an Italian sauce made from reduced wine or vinegar. And to this day, some recipes for coq au vin include an underlying note of chocolate (although the practice has remained somewhat limited to Spain and Italy). Contemporary cooks can beef up their wine reductions and pan sauces with a hit of grated chocolate, where it acts as a liaison or emulsifier, at the same time accentuating other flavours and pulling them forward. The key is to use a small amount of quality chocolate that isn’t too sweet – look for cacao content of 70 per cent or higher.

The walk With its village green overlooked by a pub and a school, a tin chapel and the local shop, Luckington is one of those rare villages that is both functional and attractive. Quiet lanes take the walk onto Sopworth, a handsome enough place that possesses a definite Cotswold feel. The classic oolitic limestone is everywhere, in the walls and cottages, the grand houses and the tower of St Mary the Virgin Church. Beyond Sopworth the walk passes through the Badminton Estate, known colloquially as ‘Beaufortshire’ after the incumbent landed gentry.

Here we find everything expected of a grand estate – manicured parkland and tree-lined avenues, ancient woodland and well-prepared hunting ground. Along the way look out for the Ragged Castle, shown on the OS maps as a folly but at one time a keeper’s lodge. Hidden away in tree cover, this atmospheric ruin would not look out of place in a Hitchcock movie.

P

eople and businesses across the city came together last week to learn about the work of the Bath Rugby Foundation. Halena Coury, head of sponsorship and fundraising at the Foundation, said: “The friends of the foundation evenings are quarterly events sponsored by Thrings and are an evening where many local businesses and individuals come along to hear about the work of the charity, how they can help by taking on a challenge or volunteering for us. “It is also a great networking evening. Last week we launched the Menswalk, the Bath Half places, a ride from the Rec

to Gloucester next April and a bike ride from Geneva to Aix-en-Provence next June.” The Bath Rugby Foundation works with disabled and disadvantaged children in the local community, running Education and Inclusion programmes using sport to engage young people aged two and above. Programmes are designed to enthuse and motivate, helping people to reach their potential in all areas of life. For more information visit wwwbathrugbyfoundation.com. Jamie Jazz

he night before I speak to jazz singer/songwriter Jamie Cullum he was performing to a packed crowd on a beach in San Sebastian in Spain. A couple of days before he

was in the Czech Republic. That morning, Jamie’s woken in yet another country – Portugal – where he’ll be putting on another show the following evening. “We left Spain at midnight last night,” says Jamie, sounding a bit sleepy.

24 THE WEEKEND www.bathchronicle.co.uk

“We’ve got this big double decker tour bus with a kitchen and everything and we travel through the night. “Today we’re in Lisbon. It’s like a boys’ camping holiday.” I have an image of a group of teenage boys spending chaotic nights under

ipn ylhk canvas, Inbetweeners-style, and suggest that Jamie’s situation might be a bit more luxurious, if not glamorous. “You haven’t seen inside,” laughs Jamie. I can’t imagi ne it’s that bad. After all, although most of his publicity pictures show him looking moodily down the camera lens Jamie seems like the type of boy you could take home to meet your parents, the sort who would change his socks every day without being reminded. For the past few months Jamie has been touring around Europe, playing numerous gigs and festivals, but now he is back in the UK for his Momentum tour – his first UK tour in three years. And on Wednesday he will be coming to Bath to perform at the Forum. It was a late addition to the schedule but, having grown up close to the city in Hullavington, Jamie was keen to come back and perform to a home crowd. “I approached the idea of playing in Bath a while ago,” he said. “But we weren’t sure that we were going to be able to do it. “I really wanted to make it work , so I could play for my friends and family. “It’s such good fun playing in an area I know so well and that’s completely the reason why I’m doing it. “I have played in the Forum before so I know it pretty well. “It is going to be really great.” Jamie, whose father John, a former High Sheriff of Somerset, is Chairman of the Forever Friends Appeal at Bath’s

Royal United Hospital, last played at the Bath Forum in April 2011 when he made a special guest appearance at a concert held in celebration of the Silver Ring Choir of Bath’s 60th anniversary. He joined the choir on stage to perform the finale, the premiere of a piece entitled Silver which he had written with his brother Ben and donated to the choir. Jamie is very much the family man. In 2010 he married food writer and former model Sophie Dahl, and earlier this year the couple had their second daughter. “When I’m away it’s tough,” he says. “It’s hard for the ones left at home, and it’s hard for me because I miss them. “But I’m never away for long. It’s

usually only three or four days at a time. “And when I am not touring I’m at home all the time, so on average I’m probably at home more than most people. “Getting the work life balance is that elusive thing for everyone, no matter what they do.” Much of Momentum, Jamie’s latest album was actually written at the family home in Buckinghamshire. “I have a little music room at home,” says Jamie. “So I could go in there and work on the album. “I did tons of stuff on opportunistic instruments. “I wrote two songs making a beat on my phone. I wrote a song on the ukelele. It was the things that were at hand, rather than painstakingly tracking down the right kit and players that I needed to do that

particular jazz song. “It was very much finding that hour that I had spare, and just getting on with it. “In a way it has helped to shape the album into something more adventurous.” Jamie’s brother Ben, is also musically talented and has worked with Jamie on Momentum, and on previous projects. “Ben has written songs for me,” says Jamie. “He is a very accomplished songwriter and producer and is always my sounding board. “We are very, very close – not just as brothers but as friends, which is great. “We are a very close family. I lucked out there.” Tickets for Jamie’s show at the Bath Forum are available from www.bathforum.co.uk or by calling 0844 888 9991.

imon Reade’s adaptation of the thrilling children’s story Toro! Toro! written by War Horse author Michael Morpurgo, visits the egg theatre Bath on Monday and Tuesday. Due to popular demand, an additional evening performance has been scheduled to take place at 7pm on the Monday. Young Antonito lives an idyllic life on his parents’ cattle farm in southern Spain. But the peace is shattered when he realises that his favourite bull-calf, brave Paco, is destined to fight in the bullring. Taking both their destinies into his own hands, and risking the lives and love of his family, Antonito hatches a daring plan. But it will take enormous courage – because this is 1936, and the drums of civil war are echoing across the Spanish plains. Originally produced by Salisbury Playhouse and nominated for the TMA Award for Best Show for Young People,

Lizzie, Darcy and Jane To celebrate the 200th anniversary year of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, MadCap Theatre Productions are bringing Joanna Norland’s play Lizzie, Darcy and Jane to the Mission Theatre in Bath from Thursday, October 24. In the play Jane Austen herself must pit her wits and will against the intrepid heroine of Pride and Prejudice, Elizabeth Bennet.

Heady with her first taste of love, Jane Austen creates Elizabeth Bennet in a moment of inspiration, but as her romance sours, she sentences Elizabeth to marry the odious Mr Collins, and herself to an equally disastrous marriage. Jane’s very real characters must take action – the fates of the author, the novel and its heroine are at stake. The play finds its dramatic roots in

Featuring the greatest hits from the mighty Madness back catalogue including Our House, Baggy Trousers, My Girl, Driving in My Car, The Wings of a Dove, Night Boat to Cairo and the all-time classic It Must Be Love, this raucous musical comedy is an uplifting tale of life and love, heartbreak and hilarity set in London’s famous Camden Town in the mid-80s. It’s Joe Casey’s 16th birthday and he’s treating his girlfriend Sarah to an evening in a brand new luxury apartment – the only problem is they have to break in. When the police turn up Joe has to decide – run away, or face the music – a choice that will set the course of his life, and his love, for ever. The actor-musician cast performing in Our House is led by Alexis Gerred as Joe Casey. His West End credits include the lead role in Dreamboats and Petticoats and the title role in Dirty White Boy: Tales of Soho. Daniella Bowen plays the role of Sarah. 2D meets 3D in joint exhibition

A

ward-winning artists Kitty Hillier and Fiona Campbell are exhibiting a series of new work in a show entitled Blurred Edges at Walcot Chapel Gallery, which runs until

October 27. Blurred Edges exploits undefined boundaries between line and form, distinct contrasts and interesting crossovers between the two artists’ work. Their different use of media (Fiona constructs organic 3D forms in metal and found materials, Kitty creates abstract 2D paint and wood pieces) adds to the dynamic interaction. Tactile and open-ended, threads

weave through the work, making connections, suggesting conflicts, revealing hidden layers, textures and emerging forms. Echoed shapes allude from one to the other and shared interests become apparent. In 2010, Kitty won the Reveal Emerging Artist Award via Somerset Art Works, resulting in a Solo Exhibition at Black Swan Arts, Frome. She also won the Bruton Arts Society Award (’03). Graduating in 2007 with a first class honours degree in Fine Art (painting) at Bath Spa University, she has since developed her contemporary pieces on wood. Her work is a subtle play of muted colours, interacting marks and amorphous painted shapes, often re-worked, chisels obliterating

Motifs are filtered from a constant documentation of everyday details, found images and curious objects, which leave the viewer to draw their own narratives. Kenyan, Fiona graduated from the Byam Shaw School of Art, London with distinction in Fine art (sculpture). Often approached as ‘drawings in space’, Fiona’s mixed media sculptural pieces include steel, copper, wire, found and recycled materials, built up in layers that are woven, wrapped and welded. Prized authors to visit city store

ext Wednesday best selling novelist Joanna Trollope comes to Bath to launch the new and already much talked about Jane Austen Project. For the project six of today’s top writers – including Joanna – have been paired with Jane Austen’s six finished novels, to launch them into the age of social media, while respecting the original plots. Joanna Trollope has writen a contemporary reworking of Sense and Sensibility. When she comes to Bath next week as part of the continuing Topping and Co autumn festival the writer will explain how her Dashwood sisters are just as dissimilar as in the original – only Elinor is now a patient and hardworking architecture student, while the impulsive Marianne fills the house with her dramas and guitar playing. Joanna chronicles the sisters’ lives as, beset by heartbreak and money worries, they struggle to stay true to their values. Joanna already has 17 best-selling novels to her name. Michael Caines from The Bath Priory has just written his first book which contains nearly 100 exciting and delicious recipes for cooking at home, distilled from a life time

Rvhuuh \yvssvwl ~pss il hwwlhypun h{ \vwwpunz pu Jh{o of passionate cooking. He will be giving a demonstration and talk in the city tomorrow. On Saturday Jess Renison writer of the Starlight Academy series for children comes to Bath to talk about her books. And on Monday we learn more about the final volume of Patrick Leigh Fermor’s unfinished trilogy. Hailed as the greatest travel writer of his generation, The Broken Road charts the great walk he undertook aged 18, from the Hook of Holland to Constantinople. On Tuesday Justin Cartwright talks about his book Lion Heart while on Wednesday Philip Kerr talks about his latest novel, Prayer in which we meet special Agent Gil Martins, an investigator of domestic terrorism for the FBI. There is more delicious food next Thursday when Sally Butcher presents An evening of Middle

Eastern Food. Sally Butcher runs Persepolis, a Persian deli in London. Hot on the heels of her award-winning books, Persia in Peckham and Veggiestan, she brings us Snackistan: Street Food, Comfort Food, Meze. Badgers are much in the news now and on Monday, October 28 Patrick Barkham talks about the animals. In Badgerlands, Patrick unearths the lives of these distinctive creatures which we more often see dead at the side. From the Wind in the Willows to the cull and to the eating of road kill, Patrick delves into the lives of our most iconic and controversial wild animal. Then on Tuesday, October 29, Mary Berry who is turning on Bath’s Christmas lights this year, but who has also been the queen of cakes for more than half a century, returns to Bath to charm her audience with tales from her new heartwarming memoir, Recipe for Life. There is still more food on Thursday, October 31 when Van Tran and Anh Vu come to Bath to talk about Vietnamese Cookery and their new book The Vietnamese Market Cookbook is full of appetising ideas. Retirement dreaming? Wake up to the benefits of renting at ‘The Hawthorns’ FINDING a practical solution which matches the quality of your retirement living dream may be easier said than done – and renting may not automatically spring to the top of your list of possible solutions. However, increasing numbers of UK retirees are discovering what their counterparts in America and Australia found out a few years back – that renting your retirement home offers many advantages over continued property ownership. Even more are discovering how you can continue to benefit from both! Hawthorns Retirement has brought its highly successful American formula for retirement living to the UK at Eastbourne, Clevedon and Braintree. These developments, in a nutshell, offer you continued independent living, none of the worries of home ownership and total flexibility to change your lifestyle at a month’s notice should circumstances dictate. And all this is achieved by renting your retirement home at The Hawthorns.

Call 01275 790060

Your monthly rental includes all your many monthly expenses including all your meals and snacks, utility bills, housekeeping, maintenance – even a free mini-bus to take you to the shops and back. If you sit down and calculate what you are spending on all those items living in your own home, the rental fees appears very reasonable indeed. As well as the financial argument, life at The Hawthorns offers the added benefits of security, companionship and the flexibility of handing in just one month’s notice of your decision to leave. Whilst many residents fund this idyllic retirement lifestyle from the proceeds of the sale of their home, many others opt to rent out their own property and fund their new-found lifestyle from the rental income, maintaining their property as part of their estate. Maybe you should wake up to the benefits of renting!

:H DOO ORYH 46 THE WEEKEND

Nobody will ever consider giving YOU a mortgage... ...more than we will. Here at Bath Building Society, we always consider every mortgage application. We understand perfectly that everyone has their own story, their own circumstances and they often don’t fit the mould of other big mortgage lenders when it comes to the questions asked on the application form. Quite often, ‘the computer says no’ when in fact the computer could say ‘yes’ if it only asked the right questions. So, if you are slightly different, then we’re here to help. Whether you’re a first time buyer looking for a 95% or 100% Parent Assisted Mortgage (a parental guarantee applies) or you are self employed and can’t get a mortgage, it will be worth getting in touch. Terms and conditions apply. To tell us about you, call us on 01225 475702 or visit www.bathbuildingsociety.co.uk

Bath Investment & Building Society is authorised by the Prudential Regulation Authority and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority and Prudential Regulation Authority, Registration Number 206026. Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on your mortgage. Think carefully before securing other debts against your home.
