This week our desks here at The Weekend have been filled with all things creepy and crawly as we get ready for Halloween. Yes, we know that we’re a week early and Halloween isn’t actually until next Thursday, but we wanted to give you plenty of inspiration for spooky styles and creepy cooking well in advance. I can’t remember when Halloween turned into such a big occasion. Certainly when I was growing up no-one went trick-or-treating. It was something that my friends and I saw on American TV shows, but it definitely hadn’t made its way across the pond.

EDITORIAL Lynne Fernquest And I don’t think the shops had embraced it then as much as they have now either. From food to fashion the shelves are filled with Halloween-themed goodies at the moment. Some people might say it’s just commercialism, and an attempt to extract yet more money from unwitting consumers, but there’s also an argument that at a time when things are all a bit dreary, maybe there’s nothing wrong with an excuse to have a bit of fun.

evermind Christmas, it’s Halloween that we’re getting excited – or maybe scared – about right now. Ghosts and ghouls, witches and wizards,

skeletons and spiders – next Thursday is Halloween, the night of the year when all things that go bump in the night are coming out. But while full-on costumes might be

alright for the kids, not everyone wants to dress up in top-to-toe fancy dress. That doesn’t mean that you have to miss out on the fiendish fun though. There’s plenty of ways that you can give a nod to the spooky season without looking totally terrifying – think black lace, monstrous motifs and sexy skulls. Here’s a few items to make sure you are looking hauntingly stylish this Halloween.

Delightful dining

Q

uite often the dining room is one area of the home that gets forgotten. With so many of us now living such hectic lifestyles, the days of the whole family sitting around the table for dinner is a thing of the past, and it is easy for this space to become a dumping ground for school bags, shoes and toys. A dining room shouldn’t just be used at Christmas and for special occasions; it should be used regularly to help bring families closer together. Sitting around the dining table of an evening, even if it is just for an hour or so, is the perfect time to hear about each other’s days. Having a properly functioning dining room makes your home a more sociable space and if you are one for entertaining and holding dinner parties, then it is important that this space is dressed to impress and clutter-free. Often, homes that do have the luxury

8

of an extra reception room incorporate a computer desk, television or even a sofa, but for me, a dining space should lend itself entirely to this purpose whenever possible. Where space is at a premium, an extending table should definitely be at the top of your shopping list. Not only are they just as stylish as standard designs, but are much more practical. If your kitchen, living or dining room is simply not big enough to lend itself to a full-size table on a permanent basis, an extending design will still enable you to benefit from family meal times and evenings of entertaining friends. In terms of shape, I believe there is still something to be said for circular tables creating a more sociable atmosphere. Of course, the table you choose will depend on the layout and size of the room, along with the dĂŠcor in place. For a period property or if you are

THE WEEKEND www.bathchronicle.co.uk

going for a kitsch, country cottage theme, reclaimed furniture will add plenty of character and charm. For an ultra-modern interior, make a bold impression with the table you choose. Glass tops and geometric metal frames will work to make your table the focal point of the room. You will be surprised at what a difference a fresh set of table linen and a new dinner service can make. Finish it off with a beautiful candelabra placed in the centre of the table. If you enjoy entertaining and your home is often the venue for you and your friends to chat over a bottle of wine, then this is the one room where you need to go all out. Use material to bring the space to life and if your dining set is in perfectly good condition, but you would like to give it a bit of a revamp, purchase a fabric that you love and re-upholster your dining chairs for a fresh new look

’ that’s as individual as you are. Irrespective of the scheme you have opted for, lighting and accessories are a crucial part of any space, especially when it comes to dining. If your dining area is part of an openplan living space, fitting pendant lighting over the dining table will help to provide

this section with definition and a sense of separation from the rest of the room. Whether you choose to make a few minor changes or go all out, the first step should be to de-clutter and organise the space, allowing it to become a functional dining area for meal times and entertaining.

Creepy Cupcakes

Halloween is a great time to get creative in the kitchen, especially if you’re looking for ways to keep your little monsters entertained or you’re planning a ghoulish gathering. A quick search of the internet will reveal recipes for all kinds of spooky snacks and devilish desserts, and shop shelves are filled with Halloween- themed decorations and knick knacks to give your home a monstrous makeover. Cupcakes are a great treat at any time of year, and Jelly Belly UK has given us this recipe for Creepy Cupcakes, which not only taste delicious, but look brilliant too. And the best part is that they’re very easy, so kids can join in the fun as well. ■ Cake ingredients 2 eggs 125g softened butter or baking margarine

14 THE WEEKEND

125g self raising flour (or plain flour with 1 tsp of baking powder added) 125g white or golden sugar 1 heaped tbs cocoa powder 1 tsp vanilla extract pinch salt 1–2 tbs milk ■ Buttercream ingredients 75g butter 220g icing sugar 30g cocoa powder 1tsp vanilla extract 1–2 tbs milk

■ Method: Add the eggs, butter, flour, sugar, cocoa and salt to a bowl and beat with a hand whisk until blended. Add the milk and briefly mix again. The batter should be loose enough to dollop off a spoon. Line a bun tin with fairy cake cases. Fill each case 2/3 with batter and bake at 190C / GM 5

for about 12 minutes until risen and when a cocktail stick inserted into the cake comes out clean. The secret to fluffy buttercream is to beat the butter really well before you add any sugar.Beat the butter until it is soft and fluffy, and then slowly add the icing sugar, cocoa, vanilla and milk. You can make butter cream in advance and store in the fridge until needed (remove from the fridge well before you need it). I store mine in the piping bag, with a clip just behind the nozzle and the end of the bag twisted so it is airtight. Decorate your cakes with the Halloween flavours of Jelly Belly of choice. The oranges, blacks, purples and bloodcurdling red are the obvious ones but Halloween is about doing things your way!

kh z v|{ Ghost Walks of Bath There’s no shortage of ghost stories about Bath. Which is perhaps not surprising given the city’s long and varied history. From Romans to Georgians and duels to bombings there’s been no shortage of death and heartache in the city, leaving behind lost souls to wander the parks, streets and houses occasionally revealing themselves to unsuspecting passers-by. Every Thursday, Friday and Saturday night, tour guides from Ghost Walks of Bath, lead groups around the city, telling them tales of ghostly goings on. Emma Dance went along to find out more. I’m not superstitious, I don’t read my horoscope, and to be honest, I don’t really believe in ghosts. I wouldn’t say I’m a complete non-believer – I haven’t completely ruled out the possibility – but let’s just say I’m waiting to be convinced. So when I went to meet my tour guide Fiona, and the rest of the group I was more than a bit sceptical about what I was going to see or hear over the next 90 minutes. The walk begins outside the Garrick’s Head which has several ghost stories attached to it. Fiona regaled us with tales of mischievous poltergeists and the hauntingly beautiful Grey Lady who occasionally floats among the patrons at the bar, filling the room with the scent of jasmine. From outside we were unlikely to see any supernatural activity first hand, but the stories themselves were entertainment enough. From there we went to the Francis Hotel. Telling you the stories will spoil the surprise, but a word of caution – don’t stay in room 18!

The giggles from the group may have put off some of the shyer spirits, but as least one member reported feeling a ghostly presence as he walked towards the spot where the doctor’s tent had stood. There was no doubt that I felt a chill, but I couldn’t help thinking it was more likely to be the cool wind of an October evening than something more sinister. Stable gets a pizza the action

Bath’s newest eatery, The Stable, opened its doors last week. The Bath branch is the fourth restaurant for the small West Country chain, famed for its locally influenced pizzas and ciders. The new Bath Stable is located in the vaulted Georgian cellars previously occupied by the late radical Gerry Perry-Smith for his legendary Bath restaurant, Hole in the Wall.

The Stable was founded by Nikki and Richard Cooper. Richard said: “We are excited to move to such a historic location that suits the unique style of the restaurant. “We pride ourselves on choosing beautiful heritage properties that greatly enhance The Stables’ experience. “Rustic authenticity is a key feature of The Stable brand across all aspects

of the restaurant.” Nikki added: “We take care to choose suppliers who share our values in terms of quality and authenticity. “Bath is home to a wealth of outstanding restaurants and producers and we are confident that The Stable will be a positive addition, appealing to the city’s foodies, chefs, critics, families, couples, and cider-lovers alike.”

Bonghy Bo serving Bath for 25 years One of Bath’s longest surviving independent cafés, Bonghy Bo has celebrated 25 years of trading. Proprietor Katharine Tang invited friends, customers, councillors and small business leaders to the event, along with special guest Masterchef Finalist 2013 Larkin Cen who prepared his signature dish Hair Dryered Pork with Peking sauce. Bonghy Bo has hosted many live bands over the years and to celebrate their own anniversary they called upon Clyve and the Soul City Foundation who recently performed at the opening

ceremony of the Special Olympics in Bath. But before the band got started on what proved to be a very lively mix of songs that had the entire café dancing, Ms Tang gave a short speech to thank all of her friends and loyal customers saying, “the best thing about Bonghy Bo is that it has brought so many people together to have a great time, and I hope that it will continue to do so for many more years to come.” ■ Have you hosted an event you would like featured in The Weekend? When Irish eyes are smiling Laura Tremelling talks to Father Ted star Ardal O’Hanlon who brings his acclaimed stand-up comedy show to Bath

B

est known for his role as bumbling Father Dougal in sitcom Father Ted, Irish comedian Ardal O’Hanlon has embarked on a stand-up tour questioning life in general, which he will be performing to audiences in Bath at the Theatre Royal on Sunday at 7.30pm. In the show O’Hanlon said he draws inspiration from his own life, questioning why he does comedy. He said: “I love stand up, I think I have the best job in the world. “You really connect with people, and the world around you, and you start to realise just how ridiculous everything really is. “I love the variety of stand-up, it is not just a job, it is a lifestyle, a way of living. “Every part of the show is based on something real about my life, and the world around me.” O’Hanlon said as a child he didn’t really know

what he wanted to do, but as soon as he started performing he loved it. “I grew up in a Catholic house in Ireland, and I didn’t have any idea what I wanted to do, though I did always look for the funny things in life. “I was a bit of a dreamer, and spent a lot of time in my own company. “I sort of drifted into comedy after university, and as sort as I started performing I knew there was no other career for me.” O’Hanlon, who lives in Dublin with his wife and three children, mostly comes up with new ideas in the attic of his house, but said inspiration can hit at any time. He said: “I work in my attic, which I like as it is close to the stars. “I have a telescope and a skylight so I can look at the moon, which is fantastic. “Ideas hit me at any time though, whether out and about, talking to someone, or watching the news. “I sometimes try things out on my wife, when I can get her to listen to me. “I also try jokes out on my kids, they are a great judge, because if children don’t find

24 THE WEEKEND www.bathchronicle.co.uk

something funny they wont laugh. “If they laugh I usually know I am on to a winner.” O’Hanlon shot to fame in 1995 when he landed the role of Father Dougal in channel 4 sitcom Father Ted. The show won him a British Comedy Award and a BAFTA. Despite the show ending in 1998 people still quote his lines. O’Hanlon said: “Father Ted was a big part of my life, and I enjoyed working with the cast. “People still remember Dougal, and quote various lines at me.” O’Hanlon also played George Sunday in BBC sitcom My Hero, and had appearances in London Irish, Big Bad World, Blessed, Skins and Dr Who. He then focused more on stand-up comedy, appearing on Dave’s One Night Stand, and more recently on Live At The Apollo and Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow. In between all this, O’Hanlan has managed to find time to write a book, his novel Talk of the Town features in the book list ‘1001 books to read before you die.’ O’Hanlon is looking forward to entertaining audiences in Bath. He said: “I love Bath, it is a very picturesque place. “I have visited a few times, the last was about five years ago when I was in a show with Lee Mack and Sarah Millican. “People in Bath are lovely, and I am very much looking forward to entertaining them.” People can catch O’Hanlon at the Theatre Royal on Sunday October 27. Tickets are priced at £19.50 and £21.50, and are available from the theatre box office on 01225 448844.

New ballet production pushing boundaries

D

ance company Rambert brings a spellbinding contemporary programme created by exceptional choreographic talent and performed by world-class dancers to the Theatre Royal next week. The renowned modern dance company makes its annual visit to the Theatre Royal Bath with a spectacular evening’s entertainment featuring The Castaways, a new work by renowned American choreographer Barak Marshall. Named by the LA Times as a “Face to Watch” last December, Barak Marshall choreographs all over the world and is particularly well-known in Israel and the US, fusing traditional and contemporary styles. This is the first time he has created new work for a UK company and a rare opportunity to see a performance created by one of America’s most celebrated choreographers. Punctuated with humour and catchy tunes, Castaways is the story of the trials and triumphs of twelve lost souls who find themselves thrown together. Set and costume design will be by Jon Bausor, who designed the London 2012 Paralympics Opening Ceremony. For the 2013 autumn tour, Ashley Page, former Artistic Director of Scottish Ballet, returns to Rambert to present Subterrain. This striking new work for five couples is set to atmospheric music by Aphex Twin and award-winning composer Mark-Anthony Turnage, whose recent work includes commissions for the Royal Opera House, ENO and BBC Proms. Also performed as part of the evening is Rambert’s version of Nijinsky’s seminal ballet L’Après midi d’un faune – a nod to the Company’s roots – and What Wild Ecstasy, a modern-day response from

Artistic Director, Mark Baldwin. What Wild Ecstasy was choreographed to music commissioned for the London Cultural Olympiad and is inspired by 90s rave culture, with eye-popping costumes and dynamic dance. Renowned for producing some of the finest choreographic and dance talent ever seen in the UK, Rambert’s unrivalled variety of performances and exceptional dancers continue to delight audiences and critics alike. The Castaways Tour 2013 appears at the Theatre Royal Bath from

Thursday, October 31 to Saturday, November 2.

Next Stage Youth Next Stage Youth will be performing Teechers by Jon Godber, at The Mission Theatre, between Tuesday, and Saturday, November 2. Ann Garner, artistic director of Next Stage Youth, said: “It’s a double cast of very talented youngsters, each performing alternate nights and including a matinée performance on Saturday, November 2. Both casts admirably meet the challenge of performing this play in the round.” The play gives us a glimpse into the life of pupils at a run-down, inner-city comprehensive. The main protagonists, Gail, Salty and Hobby, are played in Cast 1 by Tiana James, Lily Clemence and Alice Perkins, and in Cast 2 by Eliza Perry, Amberley Couchman and Flora Stone. These three girls are regarded as academic failures and written off by their teachers as trouble-makers and time-wasters. All this changes when the new drama teacher Mr Nixon played by Ollie Pitts (Cast 1) and James Head (Cast 2) arrives at the school. Following the sell-out Next Stage Youth production of Lord of the Flies three weeks ago, Ann said: “I am very proud that another 30 members of our talented youth company are about to stage equally riveting performances in Teechers. “Indeed, four of the cast who appeared in Golding’s play have moved straight on into final rehearsals for Godber’s witty and entertaining play. “It is a delight to see so much young talent treading the boards this autumn, and I urge as many people as possible to come along and see for themselves the next generation of up-and-coming young actors.”

E

nglish Touring Opera, the country’s leading touring opera company, presents a feast of Venetian opera at the Theatre Royal Bath with performances from the baroque era of Monteverdi’s The Coronation of Poppea on Monday, October 28 and Cavalli’s Jason on Tuesday, October 29. Venice, Queen of the Seas and centre of a vast trading empire, was also the origin of opera as we know it – a mixture of music and drama, nobles and comics, senses and spirit. The Coronation of Poppea and Jason were both written to be performed during Venice’s annual festival, and embody the wit and humour of the 17th-century Carnival season. English Touring Opera (ETO) is joining forces this season with The Old Street Band, a ‘period’ baroque orchestra performing on exact replicas of the musical instruments from Monteverdi and Cavalli’s day, including the dulcian and the theorbo, a forerunner of the modern guitar. Both productions are sung in English. The Coronation of Poppea was the last opera Claudio Monteverdi composed, and is often described as his greatest achievement, depicting both the grandeur of Imperial Rome and the scandal surrounding its leaders in a story of love, power, morality and corruption. Monteverdi’s final masterpiece combines mythic and very human themes, and features some of his most glorious music. Set in a world populated by ruthless characters, the opera tells of the affair between Roman emperor Nero and his young mistress Poppea, who eventually triumphs to be crowned Empress, seeing lust and ambition ultimately triumph over virtue. Francesco Cavalli’s comedy Jason is loosely based on the story of Jason and the Golden Fleece and was a runaway hit when it premiered in Venice in 1649, proving one of the most popular operas of the 17th century. Witty, melodic and entertainingly decadent, Jason embodies the true spirit of Venetian opera as

30 THE WEEKEND

www.bathchronicle.co.uk

Cavalli’s dazzling score moves fluidly between humour and pathos, intrigue and adventure. Like many operas from this period, the story uses classical myth as its starting point as Jason abandons his wife Isiphile for the sorceress Medea. But Isiphile’s protector, Cupid, intervenes on her behalf, sending Jason and a motley cast of characters on a rocky journey back home to his family in Lemnos. James Conway, ETO’s general director, said: “This autumn English Touring Opera takes you on an armchair – theatre tour of the opera of Venice, with masterpieces by Monteverdi and Cavalli. There is something for everyone, whether an opera lover or an opera novice.”

will perform for the audience while the judges make their decision. On a smaller scale but similar in concept to the BBC’s Young Musician of the Year, this event encourages musical excellence of the very highest order. Competitors must be under 21 and live or study in Bath or within a 15mile radius of the city. The contest is judged by a panel of three experienced adjudicators. Many previous winners have gone

on to enjoy successful careers in music and, in a first for the competition a previous winner returns to judge – 2001 winner Liv Marie Kodurand, is now much in demand as a solo recitalist and concert performer. She is greatly looking forward to returning to Bath to be part of this prestigious contest. 38 THE WEEKEND

here’s frightening filmic feasts galore at The Little Theatre this Halloween. On October 31 the cinema will be showing three terrificly terrifying film. The evening kicks off with Nosferatu (PG) at 6.10pm. Hold on to your neck as that toothy brute Nosferatu slides through the shadows in F.W. Murnau’s classic silent vampire tale. The film, shot in 1921 and released in 1922, was an unauthorised adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, with names and other details changed because the studio could not obtain the rights to the novel – “vampire” became “Nosferatu” and “Count Dracula” became “Count Orlok“). Stoker’s heirs sued over the adaptation, and a court ruling ordered that all copies of the film be destroyed. However, one print of Nosferatu survived, and the film came to be regarded as a masterpiece. National Theatre: Frankenstein – directed by Danny Boyle (15) will be shown at 8.30pm. The production premiered at the National Theatre in February 2011 with a cast including Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller. Then in March the production was

broadcast to cinemas around the world as a part of the National Theatre Live programme. The night of frights concludes with Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead (18) at 11.15pm. Five friends go up to a cabin in the woods, where they find unspeakable evil lurking in the forest. They find a tome called the “Necronomicon”, Book of the Dead, and the taped translation of the text. Once the tape is played, the evil is released. One by one, the teens are possessed. And if the film isn’t scary enough there will also be some in-cinema scares and shocks. The freakish fun continues on November 3 with a screening of Werner Herzog’s 1979 version of Nosferatu at 7.45pm. The Little Theatre is offering money for anyone who books for both versions.

Retirement dreaming? Wake up to the benefits of renting at ‘The Hawthorns’ FINDING a practical solution which matches the quality of your retirement living dream may be easier said than done – and renting may not automatically spring to the top of your list of possible solutions. However, increasing numbers of UK retirees are discovering what their counterparts in America and Australia found out a few years back – that renting your retirement home offers many advantages over continued property ownership. Even more are discovering how you can continue to benefit from both! Hawthorns Retirement has brought its highly successful American formula for retirement living to the UK at Eastbourne, Clevedon and Braintree. These developments, in a nutshell, offer you continued independent living, none of the worries of home ownership and total flexibility to change your lifestyle at a month’s notice should circumstances dictate. And all this is achieved by renting your retirement home at The Hawthorns.

Call 01275 790060

Your monthly rental includes all your many monthly expenses including all your meals and snacks, utility bills, housekeeping, maintenance – even a free mini-bus to take you to the shops and back. If you sit down and calculate what you are spending on all those items living in your own home, the rental fees appears very reasonable indeed. As well as the financial argument, life at The Hawthorns offers the added benefits of security, companionship and the flexibility of handing in just one month’s notice of your decision to leave. Whilst many residents fund this idyllic retirement lifestyle from the proceeds of the sale of their home, many others opt to rent out their own property and fund their new-found lifestyle from the rental income, maintaining their property as part of their estate. Maybe you should wake up to the benefits of renting!
