EARLY YEARS INITIAL TEACHER TRAINING WITH PGCE
The Early Years Initial Teacher Training
qualification is the only teacher training programme focused on the 0-5 age range. It enables you to qualify to teach babies and young children while you’re employed in an early years setting.
As an Early Years Teacher you’ll have a positive impact on the lives of young children. You’ll develop leadership qualities, skills and expertise that you can share within nurseries, pre-schools and early years departments.
This is a part-time course. You’ll study while you work and gain a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) in Early Years alongside Early Years Teacher Status (EYTS).
A series of two-week placements (maximum 6 weeks in total) throughout the year allow you to teach across the 0-5 age range and gain experience in a Key Stage 1 class.
The Department for Education is currently providing full funding for trainees starting in 2023*:
• £7,000 to cover your tuition fees
• £7,000 to cover your employer’s costs
The course runs for 10 months on a part-time basis, which equates to one day a week at University. Your employment setting will be your main training location with additional short placements in at least one other school/ setting to develop your skills and expertise . We’ll meet with you regularly to ensure you’re supported to become a creative and caring early years teacher.
The EYITT with PGCE is designed for graduates who are already employed in an early years setting, or those newly recruited to undertake EYITT as part of their role.
To apply, you’ll need to be employed for at least 16 hours per week and working directly with children.
You’ll need an undergraduate degree in any subject and GCSE passes (grade 4+ / C or equivalent) in English, Maths and Science.
Bath Spa Early Years Teachers are ideally placed to fulfil the needs of employers for high-quality education and care for babies and young children.
Graduates can work in all private, voluntary and independent (PVI) early years settings and also free schools, academies and independent schools which can employ teaching staff without Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
They can also go on to gain employment in various fields aside from teaching, including management of early years settings, in lecturing, advisory positions, teacher training, administration and educational outreach.

Early Years Teachers can add real value to your organisation by sharing leadership skills and expertise with the rest of the team. Their understanding of how young children develop, communicate and learn enables them to make a lasting, positive impact on children’s progress and outcomes.
We encourage our trainees to think critically about research, national initiatives and classroom practice, placing them at the forefront of early learning and teaching.
Early Years Teachers forge positive relationships with parents and carers, and can take on more responsibility, as the ratio of children they can monitor increases to 1:13.
On completion of the Early Years Initial Teacher Training (EYITT) with PGCE, they’ll also gain Early Years Teacher Status (EYTS).
