elcome to the ninth annual publication of the Baton Rouge Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIABR) Rose Awards. We are excited to share these notable AIABR member projects with you, the public. This awards program recognizes and celebrates design excellence by local architects in the categories of Architecture, Interior Architecture, Renovation/ Addition, Master Planning/Urban Design, Residential and Exquisite Detail. Winning projects fall under four categories of awards: the Rose Award for outstanding design and function, the Silver Rose Award for projects that are further distinguished from the Rose Award winning projects, Gold Rose Awards for exemplary design excellence, highest honor; and the Members’ Choice Award, as voted on by the AIABR membership. In addition, this year the City/Parish Planning Commission presented two Awards of Excellence, and the Louisiana Chapter of the United States Green Building Council recognized three firms and awarded one firm the USGBC Sustainability Award. This year there were 30 projects submitted to the jurors with 10 winning projects from eight different firms, judged by an amazing panel of judges from the Memphis, Tennessee, area. Our 2016 distinguished juror panel included Head Juror Todd Walker, FAIA and founding partner of the architecture firm archimania in Memphis; John Harrison Jones, AIA and principal architect at John Harrison Jones Architect, Memphis; and Louis R. Pounders, FAIA and partner in ANF Architects, Memphis. AIABR thanks the owners of these projects, who invested in our community with the pursuit of design excellence, and the talented local firms who helped get them there. A NIGHT OF DESIGN EXCELLENCE

rchitects, designers, developers, project owners and friends gathered in July at the Main Library on Goodwood Boulevard for the 2016 Rose Awards Gala event … and it was a beautiful evening! Beautiful people, a wonderful venue, fine food and lively conversation, this year’s celebration showcased some of our best. We are pleased to present in the following pages both the award-winning projects and all of the project entries for 2016. The Rose Awards program is an annual design competition hosted by American Institute of Architects Baton Rouge in which members can submit projects of outstanding architectural design in

various categories. The Rose Awards Gala is the culmination of this competition, where the final jury deliberations are announced and newly licensed Architects are honored. Comments on winning projects were presented by the traveling juror, Todd Walker of archimania in Memphis, Tennessee, and the membership casts its vote for the Members’ Choice Award in addition to honoring all of the newly licensed Architects having passed their exam over the last year.

The gala brings together a wide variety of talented individuals from the Baton Rouge area, including architects, contractors, artists, developers, city officials, facility managers and many, many others. It also welcomes collateral professionals like interior designers, landscape architects, urban planners and engineers. We believe this collaboration of professionals, culminating in a “night of design excellence,” not only highlights the abilities and talent of these varied

GAL A individuals, but also the effort that goes into creating a great project. Proceeds from the event allow AIABR to continue other volunteer programs to benefit the community throughout the year, such as “Building Ideas: The Making of Architecture,” “Building Blocks,” “CANstruction” and others. We look forward to sharing a behind the scenes look at these winning projects with the public during an installation to be held at Manship Theater inside the Shaw Center for the Arts during November this year.

The entire solution has been heralded as a significant asset to the university as a whole. It has reinforced community within the campus and provided an indelible image that goes beyond the university and acts as the “living room” of the campus.

WFCW is situated in the historic Old South Baton Rouge neighborhood, once referred to as the “bottoms”—the area strategically located between the LSU campus and downtown Baton Rouge. This modest renovation/addition strikes a balance between cost and aspiration, transforming an uninviting one-story structure into a progressive office space for a dynamic small business.

HOFFPAUIR STUDIO Category: Renovations & Additions

What began as a renovation to St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Crowley evolved into reclamation of the church’s classic character. Researching its history through generations of parishioners’ family photographs revealed its prior grandeur. The team sought to blend the Old World skill of artists and craftsmen with the modern innovation of acoustical, mechanical and lighting engineers to create a design faithful to the past, but with an eye toward the future. Through careful design and collaboration, the goal was to uphold the integrity of the original architecture while enhancing the sacral atmosphere. from the jurors: “The transformation is dramatic and appreciated.”

SILVER St. Thomas More School Administration Building & Media Center

COLEMAN PARTNERS ARCHITECTS Category: Architecture

The new administration building is forward-looking yet appropriately scaled and meshes into the existing 1950s architectural modern movement campus in Baton Rouge. The building is flexible in terms of both the multi-use (religious, educational, athletic) campus and its residential context. The design utilizes spatial relationships to provide a media center/ school community space that addressed the public and yielded much-needed “light-and-airy” gathering space. from the jurors: “A new structure that integrates beautifully within its 1950s school building context.”

The strategic re-visioning of this building demanded a complete, holistic approach to re-think the building’s organization and celebrate its rejuvenation. An interdisciplinary consolidation of math, sciences, and performing and visual arts was embraced by an academic structure to create a more comprehensive and collaborative learning environment. The complexity of the project scope involved a complete renovation of all existing floors, which was conducted floor-by-floor, in descending order, to include replacement of all mechanical, electrical, plumbing and special systems infrastructure, along with the construction of two additional floors to meet the necessary program requirements.

SILVER Butler Building Renovations

This adaptive reuse of an existing historic building is located in downtown Baton Rouge. The building was built in the 1920s, and had been mostly vacant for years. The original tin ceiling was removed and cleaned to reveal the natural patina of the metal panels. The original plaster and brick surfaces were restored, and the original concrete slab was repaired and polished to reveal the aggregate. Glass-enclosed office spaces were added to maintain transparency of the space. New natural wood screens were added, reminiscent of materials that may have been used in the original retail space. from the jurors: â&#x20AC;&#x153;The successful storefront renovation seems like a very good neighbor by enhancing the street and improving a historic structure.â&#x20AC;?

Cajun Industries Office Expansion

Nestled between two existing buildings on the campus, a new 30,200-square-foot office building provides the much-needed space for Cajun Industries. The building’s contemporary design and openness is aimed at encouraging collaboration and community. The two-story lobby becomes the beacon for the campus, providing visibility from the highway. from the jurors: “A delightful interior lobby space with views appropriately to the exterior landscape.”

RITTER MAHER ARCHITECTS Category: Renovations & Additions

This Mid City Baton Rouge building renovation was developed by business partners Scott Ritter, Steve Maher and Danny McGlynn and designed and constructed by Ritter Maher Architects. Prior to the renovation, the space had been abandoned and blighted for decades and had several fires damaging large sections of the building. Some of the hurdles that had to be cleared throughout the process included structural remediation from water and fire damage that stayed true to the original design of the building, building codes that didn’t address multiple unique situations that were encountered, and a tight budget. Salvaging rugged, existing structural elements against new, expertly crafted architectural features, the project facilitates the office program and often serves as a hub for Mid City cultural events. from the jurors: “A skillful incorporation of new office interiors in the original structure.”

Category: Master Planning/Urban Design

Mid City has a long history of not only a colorful culture but also a wide mix of businesses and developments. In recent decades, however, many areas have succumbed to blight as businesses relocated to suburban areas. This development was conceived by business partners Scott Ritter, Steve Maher and Danny McGlynn and designed and constructed by Ritter Maher Architects as a catalyst for Mid City urban revitalization. Over the course of three years, six lots in the 2900 block of Government Street were acquired and repurposed. The facades of each building across the block were improved, new tenants have replaced empty shells and new green spaces soften the streetscape.

BASF New Utilities Control Building

CRUMP WILSON ARCHITECTS Category: Interior Architecture

BASF is committed to sustainable growth and concerned with social, economic and environmental impacts. One of the project’s sustainable goals was to use as many of the company’s “homegrown” products in the building as possible. Because this project is located within the heart of BASF’s industrial facility in Geismar, many of the specified products used in the design of the building are made from raw materials produced directly on site. USGBC selected this building as a pilot project for LEED V4 due to the unique limiting restrictions of an industrial site, and a Silver level certification is anticipated. This building is a strong representation of the owner’s striving for excellence and is the direction of their future.

Building Blocks: If Kids Ruled the City This nationally recognized, awardwinning project engages youth ages 7-11 to build a small-scale version of their ideal city. They’re in control! This educational event introduces kids and their families to the importance of planning and designing on a level of play that is not only worthwhile, but a great deal of fun for all. Building Blocks is a free event, open to the public, and reaches out to involve kids of all ages with a particular focus on elementary age children to educate them about the possibilities in their future and engage them to participate in the broader environment they live in. CANstruction Each September, we join forces with Louisiana Art & Science Museum, Manship Theater at Shaw Center for the Arts, and the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank to raise hunger awareness in a unique way as we kick off Hunger Action Month with CANstruction. Unfortunately, the Flood of 2016 had others ideas, and we were forced to re-tool the event. All funds generated this year were sent as cash donations to the GBR Food Bank, and we will be hosting a CANstruction Volunteer Day at the Food Bank instead. We hope you’ll consider joining in, and CANstruction will be back next year with its “MusiCAN” theme ready to “rock and roll”!
