225 GIVES: Goal set for $4.225 million NONPROFIT ORGANIZATIONS in the Capital Region are invited to participate in 225 GIVES, a special 24-hour online fundraising competition that will take place on Tuesday, December 1. Launched by Capital Area United Way (CAUW) and the Baton Rouge Area Foundation (BRAF), 225 GIVES is based on similar campaigns that have been successfully conducted in other cities. The goal is to help generate $4.225 million for area nonprofit . “This year has been particularly challenging … as COVID-19 has caused widespread cancellations of major fundraisers at a time when nonprofit services are in higher de6
mand,” said George Bell, president and CEO of CAUW. “We believe this digital fundraising initiative will be an impactful way to build community, connect donors to local nonprofit , encourage organizations to use social media and generate excitement about our community.” Prizes will be given for most dollars raised, most unique do-
nors, and lottery-based awards throughout the day. In addition, foundations, corporations, and philanthropists may contribute to the Challenge Fund that will provide a proportional share of the donations received by every nonprofit that raises a minimum of $225. More than $500,000 in monetary prizes and Challenge awards is ex-
pected to be available to participating nonprofit . “Our region is exceptionally charitable and we ask that you consider making any year-end gifts through 225 GIVES so nonprofits can earn additional incentive from the Challenge Fund,” said John Davies, president and CEO of BRAF. “We believe there is no better time than now to create a giving movement that will be sustainable for years to come.” Donations on Dec. 1 can be made at 225GIVES.org. Our Grants Librarian can assist you with your search, whether you are a grant-seeker, grant-maker, or just curious about the grants process. For an appointment, call 225.389.4964. The Library also offers a variety of FREE tools that can help nonprofit organizations assess and strengthen their business model, perform needs assessments, research funding opportunities, locate community partners and provide skills training and workforce development for staff. CHALLE NGE S IN 2020 WHEN THE STAY at Home Order halted normal operations and service delivery, the already valuable free online tools and resources in the Digital Library became invaluable, as families were forced to stay safe at home. We continued to offer a few important services, including drive-through opportunities at two locations, telephone reference assistance, and outdoor access to Wi-Fi. As phased reopening progressed, we adapted in-person events to an online, virtual delivery, including the Summer Reading Program, the Mid City MicroCon, and the Baton Rouge Mini Maker Faire.

CHALLE NGE S IN 2020 CHILDHOOD CANCER PATIENTS and survivors are an especially vulnerable population for COVID-19, so Fishin’ Galore was hosted as a live-stream virtual event this year with videos and messages from multi-year volunteers. To prepare, we mailed our patient population an exclusive event T-shirt, collectible medal and box of supplies
for them and their siblings to participate in the fun. We’ve learned that our Dream Day Family is strong and many of our patient families attend Fishin’ Galore to rejuvenate their mental and emotional well-being for another year of fig ting, recovering and supporting one another.

HOPE’s revenue is diverse and its board of directors are very involved in the process. In the 2019-20 fiscal year, HOPE enjoyed a successful annual fundraising campaign, expanding its donor base. Additionally, revenue from The Way To Work earned income venture (social enterprise) increased as more companies found the value of developing essential employees who have limited resources.
Due to the COVID 19 crises, fundraising events are on hold. As the world pivots, HOPE is in the midst of a sponsorship campaign to convert its highly effective workforce development curriculum into a virtual format. The video series provides HOPE’s clients additional tools to move toward self-sufficiency when face-to-face instruction is limited. When you see someone on a street corner with a sign that says, “Homeless - Need Help,” your first instinct may be to hand them a cash donation, but we do not recommend that approach. Many people are homeless because they have lost a job, become disabled, and have no family or friends to turn to, but some are homeless because of mental illness or problems with addiction. What they all need is a safe place to stay, people who care, and a chance to get back on their feet. That’s the purpose of the St. Vincent de Paul “Hope Card” to tell those who are in a situation of homelessness about the services we provide. LOUISIANA HAS THE highest food insecurity rate for children in the country and is ranked in the top three states with food insecure seniors. In our service area, 1 in 7 of the population are food insecure, which means they do not know where their next meal will come from. This statistic is from before the pandemic, and will likely increase. Our goal is to reduce the number of food insecure individuals in our community by collecting, purchasing and distributing food through our 100-plus agencies, which directly feed those facing hunger.

Kids’ Orchestra is supported by the community. It is thanks to supporters just like you that we have been able to serve Kindergarten through 5th grade students across East Baton Rouge Parish for 10 years. Students, like brothers, Miguel and Eduardo G., have directly benefited from supporters like you. Both Miguel and Eduardo are now alumni but started young with Kids’ Orchestra. Together, the brothers spent 7 years making music thanks to our supporters. With Kids’ Orchestra, Miguel and Eduardo had the opportunity to learn different instruments. Eduardo fell for the flute, and still plays today in his high school band. Miguel went for the strings, learning to play both the violin and cello. As a new middle schooler this year, he is excited to join his school’s orchestra playing the violin. Without the support of our donors, Miguel and Eduardo would not have had the chance to join a community of students making music, studying an instrument, and practicing the art of performance.

CHALLE NGE S IN 2020 IN RESPONSE TO the COVID-19 pandemic, GSLE’s staff, volunteers, and girls went straight to work sewing masks, collecting canned goods for food banks, and donating cookies to healthcare workers. The staff developed an at-home learning solution hosting live fun patch events on Facebook, and later released Girl Scouts at Home, allowing girls to earn badges and gain important life skills from virtually anywhere.

SINCE THE CANCER CENTER’S inception nearly 50 years ago, generous community volunteers and supporters have been the cornerstone of our advancement. These contributions allow our sole focus to remain on meeting the unique needs of every patient. You can play a key role in propelling cancer care forward by participating in giving programs, signing up for a committee, or providing a personal touch by volunteering at one of our locations.
C HALLENGES I N 2020 AT THE CANCER CENTER, our team adapted to new approaches and rose to new levels of resilience as a result of COVID-19, quickly adjusting on a daily basis to ensure everyone’s safety. We learned from hospital partners and others, created practices in-house, and shared with colleagues around the country. It made us even more agile, offering more solutions such as telemedicine and innovating practices to sanitize and prolong the life of PPE supplies. When faced with COVID-19, we realized the need for greater resources and launched the One Community, One Goal fundraising initiative to support cancer patients and frontline healthcare workers.

THE NATURE CONSERVANCY works around the world to protect important lands and waters so that nature and people can thrive. This includes constructing oyster reefs in Calcasieu Lake, restoring critical wetlands in the Atchafalaya River Basin, and restoring and managing longleaf pine forests across the state. We want to conserve Louisiana’s freshwater, forests, and coasts, not just for their own sake, but for their ability to enrich our lives and fulfill our need .
Our donors and partners are often invited to participate in field tri s and volunteer events at our beautiful preserves throughout the state. There are opportunities to go on guided tours with conservation staff, to explore Louisiana’s natural treasures, and participate in activities like planting trees and bagging oyster shells for reef restoration. Many of our preserves are open to the public to explore.

WE HAVE LEARNED new ways to connect and engage with those we serve. This year, we moved to virtual programming for our metastatic breast cancer conference as well as other events. In addition to Facebook Live and Zoom, we partnered with local public access channels to engage those who may not have reliable internet access which expanded our reach. We used feedback from our pilot treatment assistance program to not only expand this program across our 56-parish service area, but we also added to what is covered.

Komen Louisiana has contributed over $5 million toward the $1 billion that has been awarded in research grants globally. Not only does Komen fund research throughout the breast cancer continuum of care, but Komen also funds researchers at all stages in their careers.

Komen Louisiana has granted over $15 million for screenings, diagnostics, treatment, support, and education. Our Treatment Assistance Program supports those diagnosed with breast cancer to reduce barriers to care.
Komen Louisiana partners with faith-based organizations, community centers, and businesses across the state to provide in-depth breast health education. Komen Louisiana also hosts Louisiana’s only Metastatic Breast Cancer Conference.

Komen Louisiana advocates at all levels of government. In 2019, we worked with state Rep. Julie Stokes on HB 347 and 370, which covers certain diagnostic imaging at the same level as screening mammograms and prohibits step therapy from being used when treating those living with metastatic cancer, respectively.
