Relentless about giving back to the community.

Every gift makes a difference. At Ochsner, we’re proud our giving helps to improve the health and wellbeing of the Baton Rouge community. We’ve championed projects like expanding access to care with community health centers. We’ve conducted COVID-19 prevalence studies so the public and our elected leaders have the data needed to make informed decisions. We also support more than 40 funds to help Ochsner patients and programs of Ochsner in the Greater Baton Rouge area. These funds range from providing patients with financial assistance to allowing providers the opportunity to research and create innovations in patient care. To support these funds and help Ochsner advance our mission, visit ochsner.org/philanthropy.

FROM THE PUBLISHER

Connect with a cause that speaks to your heart WORDS LIKE giving, compassion, charity and hope have never carried as much meaning as they did this year. 2020 has been a year like no other … a year that presented us with unending opportunities to show acts of kindness and compassion toward our “frontRolfe McCollister, Jr. line workers,” families, friends and neighbors. We all learned about the importance of philanthropy (literally, the “love of mankind.”) Thank goodness for the incredible organizations featured in our annual Giving Guide. They have always worked hard in our community to make a difference in people’s lives, but they went above and beyond this year—living out their mission, sharing their time and talents, serving as role models, and inspiring the rest of us to be of service to others. We hope this publication will be helpful to you as you plan your own philanthropy for the year-end and 2021. We hope you will make a connection with a cause that speaks to your heart. For your convenience, you can click on our website (inRegister. com/GIVE), browse the nonprofits and click to donate. New this year is a program called 225 GIVES created by the Baton Rouge Area Foundation and Capital Area

United Way. 225 GIVES is a fundraising program and competition to help nonprofits collectively raise money for essential services in our community, and it will take place in conjunction with Giving Tuesday on December 1. (See page 6 for details.) You can also use our site to donate as part of this program. Finally, we want to congratulate those who will be honored by the Greater Baton Rouge chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals when it celebrates its 30th National Philanthropy Day (NPD) Luncheon on Tuesday, Nov. 10. inRegister magazine is proud to again serve as a presenting sponsor for the event, which will take place at City Club of Baton Rouge. And special thanks to our sponsors this year—East Baton Rouge Parish Library, Peyton Murphy Law Firm, Ochsner Health, and Entergy–who have helped make The Giving Guide possible. Sincerely,

225 GIVES: Goal set for $4.225 million NONPROFIT ORGANIZATIONS in the Capital Region are invited to participate in 225 GIVES, a special 24-hour online fundraising competition that will take place on Tuesday, December 1. Launched by Capital Area United Way (CAUW) and the Baton Rouge Area Foundation (BRAF), 225 GIVES is based on similar campaigns that have been successfully conducted in other cities. The goal is to help generate $4.225 million for area nonprofit . “This year has been particularly challenging … as COVID-19 has caused widespread cancellations of major fundraisers at a time when nonprofit services are in higher de6

mand,” said George Bell, president and CEO of CAUW. “We believe this digital fundraising initiative will be an impactful way to build community, connect donors to local nonprofit , encourage organizations to use social media and generate excitement about our community.” Prizes will be given for most dollars raised, most unique do-

nors, and lottery-based awards throughout the day. In addition, foundations, corporations, and philanthropists may contribute to the Challenge Fund that will provide a proportional share of the donations received by every nonprofit that raises a minimum of $225. More than $500,000 in monetary prizes and Challenge awards is ex-

pected to be available to participating nonprofit . “Our region is exceptionally charitable and we ask that you consider making any year-end gifts through 225 GIVES so nonprofits can earn additional incentive from the Challenge Fund,” said John Davies, president and CEO of BRAF. “We believe there is no better time than now to create a giving movement that will be sustainable for years to come.” Donations on Dec. 1 can be made at 225GIVES.org. For more information, contact Ethan Bush of Trility Partners at 225GIVES@CAUW.org.

It came while the world was busy and brought it all to a sudden standstill. But not the people working for nonprofits; they got even busier. Amid the uncertainties of the pandemic, they adapted fast. Just like they did after Katrina and Rita. After Andrew, Gustav and the Great Floods of 2016. When the world stumbled and slowed, they stepped up. The Baton Rouge Area Foundation salutes and thanks our nonprofits for a job well done, last week and next week and for years to come. We are proud to be your partners.

A WORD FROM OUR SPONSORS

Effective tools to strengthen our community

SPENCER WATTS Library Director

The East Baton Rouge Parish Library offers a variety of resources for nonprofit organizations at the Grants Center. Amazingly, 90% of domestic foundations don’t have a website. Foundation Directory Online and iWave, only available at the new River Center Branch Library, give you access to these hard-to-find funders, plus the most effective tools to organize and manage your foundation fundraising process. Our Grants Librarian can assist you with your search, whether you are a grant-seeker, grant-maker, or just curious about the grants process. For an appointment, call 225.389.4964. We also host free programs periodically for grant seekers. The Library also offers a variety of FREE tools that can help nonprofit organizations assess and strengthen their business model, perform needs assessments, research funding opportunities, locate community partners and provide skills training and workforce development for staff. These resources are available FREE 24/7 in the Digital Library. A consultation via Small Business Services (SmallBusiness@ebrpl.com) will help your group create an effective strategy, whether it’s enhancing your own skills as a grant seeker, writing a business plan, getting reliable and relevant local statistics, or finding out about potential corporate funders. All you need is your Library card!

Taking great strides to make a difference

PEYTON MURPHY Attorney

Murphy Law Firm opened in 1993 with one goal in mind—helping injured victims throughout Louisiana. Since then, our team has succeeded in doing that and much more. Because of our love for people, we have taken great strides to make a difference in our community. When faced with the COVID-19 pandemic, our team tirelessly gave out over 67,000 masks, gloves and more than 100 gallons of hand sanitizer to local residents, hospitals and nursing homes. In addition, we have actively supported a large number of organizations in our community, including the American Cancer Society, Dreams Come True of Louisiana, CASA, Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Battle Against Autism, McMain’s Children’s Developmental Center, United Cajun Navy, HOPE Ministries, Bella Bowman Foundation, Kelli’s Kloset, Emerge Center and many others. Our legal team has helped thousands of injured victims over the last 28 years with over 150 years of combined experience. Our love for south Louisiana and our community extends beyond helping injured victims.

Fighting for the health and safety of our world

MICHELLE DODENHOFF Senior VP & Chief Development Officer

Ochsner Health is committed to giving back to the communities it serves through preventive screenings, health and wellness resources, and partnerships with innovative organizations that share our vision. As we continue to expand our offerings and services throughout the Baton Rouge region, we are hopeful you will consider investing in Louisiana’s largest nonprofit healthcare system—Ochsner Health. Ochsner’s footprint extends beyond the Greater Baton Rouge area, delivering health to the people of Louisiana, Mississippi and the Gulf South with a mission to serve, heal, lead, educate and innovate. This is possible only because our donors’ generosity empowers Ochsner to pursue research, education and innovations in patient care and treatment that set us apart and enables us to advance healthcare for the good of our patients, our community and beyond. As we continue to face this global crisis and fight for the health and safety of the world, the generosity and commitment to the well-being of our patients and communities by our donors is inspiring.

Looking toward a better and brighter 2021

JODY MONTELARO Vice President of Public Affairs

Like many other businesses and community members, we at Entergy Louisiana have addressed our share of challenges during 2020. We have also stood by our commitment to the Greater Baton Rouge community. Each year Entergy shareholders provide millions of dollars in philanthropic contributions to communities across the state, and 2020 was no different. We aligned with other Louisiana businesses, customers and nonprofits to lead an endeavor that ultimately helped sustain restaurants while providing consistent sources of nutrition to area hospitals. In Baton Rouge alone, this effort, which we called Fueling the Fight, assisted over 40 restaurants and provided hundreds of meals to workers in the COVID-19 units of Our Lady of the Lake Medical Center, Ochsner Medical Center, Baton Rouge General, and Woman’s Hospital. Our commitment to area nonprofits and philanthropies focusing on education, poverty solutions and economic development will remain intact as we look toward a better and brighter 2021. This commitment is deeply personal to our Entergy family because we not only serve power to this community, but we make our homes and lives here as well. We thank all of the donors, community partners, philanthropies and nonprofits that are part of the Giving Guide this year. Your efforts make our future brighter and help to power life.

HOPE’s Client Choice Food Pantry serves 1,000 families representing 3,750 individuals each year with dignity. This supplemental food service allows families in our community to use more of their income for other basic necessities such as housing, utilities and medication.

HOPE’s workforce development division, The Way To Work Sustainable Workforce SOLUTIONS©, helps companies build a sustainability plan setting them and their employees up for long-term success. We help companies lower turnover and keep good people.

Through targeted assessments, training, and one-on-one financial, career, and success coaching, The Way To Work helps individuals get and keep sustainable employment, the first step toward self-sufficiency and a new trajectory for future generations.

Funding/Events

Funding Sources

HOPE’s revenue is diverse and its board of directors are very involved in the process. In the 2019-20 fiscal year, HOPE enjoyed a successful annual fundraising campaign, expanding its donor base. Additionally, revenue from The Way To Work earned income venture (social enterprise) increased as more companies found the value of developing essential employees who have limited resources.

Due to the COVID 19 crises, fundraising events are on hold. As the world pivots, HOPE is in the midst of a sponsorship campaign to convert its highly effective workforce development curriculum into a virtual format. The video series provides HOPE’s clients additional tools to move toward self-sufficiency when face-to-face instruction is limited. Individuals and companies are invited to sponsor “Producing a Better Tomorrow.” For more information, contact Cheryl Lott at clott@hopebr.org.

Volunteering/Giving

Volunteers are essential to the success of our programs. Opportunities include unloading food trucks, assisting clients through the food pantry, data entry and file management, and helping with holiday events. Individuals and corporations may give through sponsorships, direct or online donations, legacy gifts, and in-kind donations.

uring the COVID-19 Pandemic, we are working hard to shelter homeless individuals and families. When you see someone on a street corner with a sign that says, “Homeless - Need Help,” your first instinct may be to hand them a cash donation, but we do not recommend that approach. Many people are homeless because they have lost a job, become disabled, and have no family or friends to turn to, but some are homeless because of mental illness or problems with addiction. What they all need is a safe place to stay, people who care, and a chance to get back on their feet. That’s the purpose of the St. Vincent de Paul “Hope Card” to tell those who are in a situation of homelessness about the services we provide. Feel free to cut out our Hope Card above or visit https://svdpbr.org/hope-card to print and keep in your pocket or car. Rather than providing cash, our Hope Card can provide linkages to services to help someone overcome homelessness.

LOUISIANA HAS THE highest food insecurity rate for children in the country and is ranked in the top three states with food insecure seniors. In our service area, 1 in 7 of the population are food insecure, which means they do not know where their next meal will come from. This statistic is from before the pandemic, and will likely increase. Our goal is to reduce the number of food insecure individuals in our community by collecting, purchasing and distributing food through our 100-plus agencies, which directly feed those facing hunger.

HELPING THOSE IN NEED JUST FEELS GOOD. GIVE. DONATE. VOLUNTEER. GET INVOLVED TODAY AND MAKE A DIRECT IMPACT IN THE LIVES OF OTHERS. According to a recent study from Feeding America, Louisiana leads the country with 24.6% of children who are food insecure. In the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank’s 11-parish service area, the study indicates 1 in 5 children are food insecure. Many of these food insecure children live in a household that does not qualify for most federal nutrition programs. Your Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank is committed to the mission of feeding the hungry by providing food and educational outreach through faith-based and other community partners. Food insecure households may not always be food insecure, but it may reflect a household’s need to decide between basic needs - such as housing, paying bills and purchasing nutritionally adequate foods. You can make a difference in their lives by simply giving food, donating funds or volunteering your time in service to others. Join us soon to learn more - Together We’re Fighting Hunger.

Kids’ Orchestra is supported by the community. It is thanks to supporters just like you that we have been able to serve Kindergarten through 5th grade students across East Baton Rouge Parish for 10 years. Students, like brothers, Miguel and Eduardo G., have directly benefited from supporters like you. Both Miguel and Eduardo are now alumni but started young with Kids’ Orchestra. Together, the brothers spent 7 years making music thanks to our supporters. With Kids’ Orchestra, Miguel and Eduardo had the opportunity to learn different instruments. Eduardo fell for the flute, and still plays today in his high school band. Miguel went for the strings, learning to play both the violin and cello. As a new middle schooler this year, he is excited to join his school’s orchestra playing the violin. Without the support of our donors, Miguel and Eduardo would not have had the chance to join a community of students making music, studying an instrument, and practicing the art of performance.

THIS YEAR, WE evolved quickly to keep pace with LSU’s extraordinary success in recruiting, retaining, and graduating students. We re-envisioned our operations to drive immediate-impact dollars with a focus on scholarships, capital projects, and excellence funds. We managed this strategy pivot amidst unanticipated budget pressures by building a leaner operational structure that our refocused budget can support. Throughout this year, we have been reminded that amid times of hard decisions, our most important responsibility is being good stewards of every dollar given in support of LSU.

MISSION STATEMENT To improve survivorship and lessen the burden of cancer through expert treatment, compassionate care, early detection, research and education.

SINCE THE CANCER CENTER’S inception nearly 50 years ago, generous community volunteers and supporters have been the cornerstone of our advancement. These contributions allow our sole focus to remain on meeting the unique needs of every patient. You can play a key role in propelling cancer care forward by participating in giving programs, signing up for a committee, or providing a personal touch by volunteering at one of our locations.

C HALLENGES I N 2020 AT THE CANCER CENTER, our team adapted to new approaches and rose to new levels of resilience as a result of COVID-19, quickly adjusting on a daily basis to ensure everyone’s safety. We learned from hospital partners and others, created practices in-house, and shared with colleagues around the country. It made us even more agile, offering more solutions such as telemedicine and innovating practices to sanitize and prolong the life of PPE supplies. When faced with COVID-19, we realized the need for greater resources and launched the One Community, One Goal fundraising initiative to support cancer patients and frontline healthcare workers.

YOUR SUPPORT IN HELPING PATIENTS TRIUMPH OVER CANCER IS NEEDED NOW MORE THAN EVER.

COVID-19 brought many challenges to the Cancer Center, but we have emerged as a stronger, more agile organization, continuing to care for patients. However, since many screening programs across the country—including our own—were paused for a time, and some individuals are still apprehensive about visiting medical facilities, we believe we will diagnosis more late stage cancers in the near future. You can help propel cancer care forward for today and tomorrow by making a gift that will impact patients locally whenever the need arises. We thank you for your continued support!

INFORMATION 721 Government St., Suite 200

THE NATURE CONSERVANCY works around the world to protect important lands and waters so that nature and people can thrive. This includes constructing oyster reefs in Calcasieu Lake, restoring critical wetlands in the Atchafalaya River Basin, and restoring and managing longleaf pine forests across the state. We want to conserve Louisiana’s freshwater, forests, and coasts, not just for their own sake, but for their ability to enrich our lives and fulfill our need .

Our donors and partners are often invited to participate in field tri s and volunteer events at our beautiful preserves throughout the state. There are opportunities to go on guided tours with conservation staff, to explore Louisiana’s natural treasures, and participate in activities like planting trees and bagging oyster shells for reef restoration. Many of our preserves are open to the public to explore.

FOU N DATION FOR WOMAN’S  COMMUNITY PRO GR AMS

INFORMATION 100 Woman’s Way Baton Rouge, LA 70817 225.924.8720 womans.org/giving

SINCE OPENING IN 1968, Woman’s has evolved to become so much more than a place focused only on delivering babies. The organization has made it a priority to address profound problems in the community that affect women and babies, including infant prematurity, opioid use resulting in adverse health effects for both mom and baby, access to cancer screenings and therapy, and research to prevent chronic disease throughout a woman’s life. Woman’s community programs, many of which are funded by philanthropy, address healthcare challenges.

CHALLE NGE S IN 2020 THE PANDEMIC HAS presented many challenges for Woman’s. The safety of our patients, physicians, staff, and visitors has been our primary concern. We are extremely grateful for the overwhelming support of our community by providing meals, encouragement, homemade masks, and financial ontributions to our team.

Our biggest challenge has been to maintain funding for existing programs when so many healthcare donors directed money to support COVID needs. We have re-imagined events, written hundreds of personal letters, and used technology to connect with donors and maintain awareness of our mission.

MISSION STATEMENT To save lives by meeting the most critical needs in our community and investing in breakthrough research to prevent and cure breast cancer.

WE HAVE LEARNED new ways to connect and engage with those we serve. This year, we moved to virtual programming for our metastatic breast cancer conference as well as other events. In addition to Facebook Live and Zoom, we partnered with local public access channels to engage those who may not have reliable internet access which expanded our reach. We used feedback from our pilot treatment assistance program to not only expand this program across our 56-parish service area, but we also added to what is covered.

SERVICE AREA Susan G. Komen Louisiana serves 56 of Louisiana’s 64 parishes, which covers the entire state except the New Orleans metropolitan area.

ACTION

Komen Louisiana advocates at all levels of government. In 2019, we worked with state Rep. Julie Stokes on HB 347 and 370, which covers certain diagnostic imaging at the same level as screening mammograms and prohibits step therapy from being used when treating those living with metastatic cancer, respectively.

THE CHALLENGE

OUR APPROACH

10 YEAR GOAL By 2030, TWICE AS MANY children in communities where we work will reach key educational milestones indicating they are on a path to economic mobility and a future filled with possibility.

1 2 3 4

FIND PROMISING LEADERS We find promising leaders who commit to teach for two years in a low-income community.

IMPACT STUDENTS AND SCHOOLS We support our educators to advance the academic and personal growth of students, and help strengthen schools.

DEVELOP SYSTEMS-CHANGE LEADERS We cultivate and develop their long-term leadership through classroom teaching.

FOSTER COLLECTIVE LEADERSHIP We support and foster community among them throughout their lifetime, as their careers take shape.

Celebrating 30 years of educational impact in South Louisiana Since 1990, Teach For America South Louisiana has recruited, developed, and supported a diverse network of leaders who continue to expand opportunity for children. Over its 30 years working in Louisiana, TFA has recruited and placed over 1,700 teachers in our community. Our network of corps members and alumni work in classrooms, schools, and every sector and field that shape the broader systems in which schools operate.
