CONEXPO ATTENDANCE RECORD DEMONSTRATES VALUE OF THE IN-PERSON EXPERIENCE

The attendance record broken at CONEXPO-CON/AGG 2023 is a strong sign that the industry is back after the turmoil of the three years since the last edition of the show. With over 139,000 attendees at the 2023 show, it was obvious that there is an appetite for industry engagement. Over the week at the show we saw an impressive range of new equipment, and crowds were enthusiastic to experience it and the latest innovations and job site solutions on display.

Getting into the cab to experience the new machine – to have a tactile experience, and ask the experts questions one-on-one – is a vital part of the decision-making process when selecting new equipment, whether at a trade show, such as CONEXPO, or at your local dealer.

Representatives from several manufacturers that I spoke with emphasized that the desire for that personal connection was high and a good sign for the industry as contractors seek solutions that address the range of challenges that the industry faces today – whether it’s finding and keeping good operators, training new recruits, meeting tighter environmental regulations, or seeking machines that will deliver a productivity edge to increase the bottom line as project margins and timelines tighten.

The appetite for education was also evident at CONEXPO-CON/AGG 2023 – over 91,000 formal education sessions were purchased by attendees of the show, in addition to the informal conversations on the show floor and networking opportunities available after hours.

The atmosphere at CONEXPO-CON/AGG 2023 left us feeling a lot of excitement and optimism for the industry this year – and there’s a lot to talk about when a show covers over 3 million square feet of exhibition space.

I was excited to see several manufacturers enter entirely new product categories this year, which if you missed the show, you can discover in our CONEXPO-CON/AGG 2023 show review in this issue. We look at a selection of equipment introductions from the show covering the earthmoving, roadbuilding, and aggregates sectors – but consider it a taster from the CONEXPO buffet.

With so much new equipment to explore, there will be more to come over the next few issues. In May, we’ll dive into new technology that stood out at CONEXPO – including unique machine prototypes and concepts that wowed us on the show floor.

The presence of electric machines also became a norm at this CONEXPO – it was hard to turn a corner without encountering a manufacturer’s first, or latest, entry into that category. Stay tuned for further coverage of those machines this summer.

VOLVO CE DELIVERS ARTICULATED HAULER MADE FROM FOSSIL-FREE STEEL TO CRH

Volvo CE has handed over its second machine made using fossil-free steel.

The A30G articulated hauler was handed over by the President of Volvo CE, Melker Jernberg, to Scott Parson, president of Americas materials at CRH, at Volvo Group’s CONEXPO-CON/AGG 2023 press conference.

“At Volvo CE, we believe partnership is the new leadership,” says Jernberg. “The handover today to Pennsy Supply demonstrates what can be achieved when we work together with like-minded and forward-thinking partners who share our vision and commitment to sustainability and want to lead our industry to change.”

Swedish steel manufacturer SSAB produced the fossil-free steel using a new technology with fossil-free electricity and hydrogen. The result is a significantly lower climate impact in SSAB’s production process – an at least 90 percent reduction in CO2 emissions – and an important step towards a net-zero emissions value chain.

“No business can solve the complex challenges such as climate change alone,” adds Parson. “We need to actively partner with key players throughout our value chain to innovate and create new business solutions. Volvo and SSAB have converted emerging technology in the steel industry into a working model of what the future will look like. We are delighted to be the first recipient of this technology in the U.S.”

Pennsy Supply Inc. is part of the CRH group of companies. Like Volvo CE, the CRH group has Science-Based Target commitments. It aims to be a net-zero business by 2050 and is targeting a 30 percent reduction in absolute group-wide emissions by 2030. Pennsy Supply will use the fossil-free A30G at its East Petersburg quarry in Pennsylvania.

HOLCIM’S LOW-CARBON CONCRETE WINS CONEXPOCON/AGG CONTRACTORS’ CHOICE AWARD

Holcim’s ECOPact low-carbon concrete was awarded the CONEXPO-CON/AGG Next Level Awards Contractors’ Choice honour in the inaugural awards program at CONEXPO-CON/AGG and IFPE 2023.

The Next Level Awards program celebrates exhibiting companies that are pushing the boundaries and developing “next-level” products, technologies, and services.

“We are proud to announce Holcim as the winner of the inaugural Next Level Awards – Contractors’ Choice,” says Dana Wuesthoff, CONEXPO-CON/AGG show director. “Their commitment to excellence and innovation in the construction industry is truly impressive, and it is evident that they are highly regarded by the industry.”

ECOPact provides the construction industry with a concrete solution to the carbon challenge, offering up to 90 percent lower CO2 emissions compared with standard concrete mix designs. Projects using ECOPact low-carbon concrete reduce vast amounts of CO2 emissions.

Attendees at CONEXPO-CON/AGG and IFPE voted for their favourite of 10 finalists on site to determine the Contractors’ Choice Award.

The finalists were selected by a panel of Associated General Contractors of America (AGC) members. They were judged based on the following criteria:

• Addresses a common industry need in a unique and innovative way.

• Benefits the industry across multiple applications for industry-wide adoption.

• Positively impacts the safety, sustainability, and workforce of the industry.

“We are honoured to have ECOPact low-carbon concrete recognized as the Contractors’ Choice for the inaugural Next Level Awards Program,” says Toufic Tabbara, region head of North America at Holcim. “We are committed to changing the way we build a more sustainable future and helping our customers reduce the carbon footprint of their projects.”

139,000 ATTEND CONEXPOCON/AGG 2023

CONEXPO-CON/AGG 2023 has come to a close, but not before drawing more than 139,000 attendees to Las Vegas for five full days of product launches, announcements, education sessions, and networking opportunities.

Attendance outstripped expectations for the event, which organizers said made it the largest trade show in North America. More than 2,400 exhibitors from 36 countries took up more than 3 million square feet of exhibit space.

“The innovations in the construction industry unveiled this week will play a role in helping construction professionals drive meaningful and sustainable economic growth,” said Phil Kelliher, Caterpillar senior vice president and CONEXPO-CON/AGG show chair. “Live events in the construction industry are very important, because you can see, touch, and experience the products. That value was reaffirmed this past week across the show floor.”

This year’s show emphasized how the construction industry is evolving in many ways to adapt to sustainable technologies, products, and practices. Show attendees were treated to sustainability in action, from electric and hydrogen powered construction equipment, to more recyclable materials, and waste reduction opportunities.

The next CONEXPO-CON/AGG & IFPE will be held March 3 to 7, 2026, at the Las Vegas Convention Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.

DOOSAN PORTABLE POWER PRODUCTS, FORKLIFTS, AND INDUSTRIAL COMPRESSORS TRANSITION TO BOBCAT BRAND

Doosan Bobcat will transition the company’s portable power products, forklifts, and industrial compressors to the Bobcat name. Doosan Portable Power – which manufactures air compressors, mobile generators, and light towers – will join Doosan Industrial Air and Doosan Industrial Vehicle, which supplies material handling equipment, under the Bobcat trade dress in North America.

AUSTRALIA’S PATRICK DOHENY WINS CATERPILLAR’S 2022/2023 GLOBAL OPERATOR CHALLENGE

Over 5,500 machine operators competed in the 2022/2023 Caterpillar Global Operator Challenge, and Patrick Doheny was awarded the title of “World Champion” as the best Cat construction machine operator. He competed against eight other finalists operating a wheel loader, backhoe, and an excavator in three skill-testing challenges. American Matt Ferris finished in second while Łukasz Mokrzyński from Poland finished third.

LOW-CARBON CEMENT SOLUTION MADE FROM RECYCLED GLASS

Progressive Planet and Lafarge Canada will explore a cleantech solution expected to decrease the carbon emissions of cement. The two companies have signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding to facilitate the exploration.

Lafarge will purchase all the PozGlass produced by Progressive Planet’s pilot plant, based in Kamloops, B.C. The pilot plant is expected to begin construction in 2023 and be operational in

2024. Lafarge will test the commercial possibilities of PozGlass 100G, a product made of 100 percent recycled consumer glass which is designed to replace many of the carbon-intensive ingredients used in cement.

In addition, Lafarge will be Progressive Planet’s exclusive cement industry partner in testing and implementing PozGlass into cement products. Both companies will also identify opportunities to expand the PozGlass technology.

CUMMINS’ ACCELERA BRAND TO DEVELOP SUSTAINABLE ZEROEMISSIONS SOLUTIONS

Cummins has launched the Accelera brand. The new brand falls under the New Power business unit and will provide zero-emission solutions for a range of industries so that companies can work to accelerate the transition to sustainable power.

Accelera provides a range of zero-emission power solutions, including hydrogen fuel cells, batteries, e-axles, traction systems, and electrolyzers, to sustainably power a variety of industries from commercial transportation to chemical production. Over the past several years, Cummins has invested over $1.5 billion in research and technology, capital, and acquisitions to build Accelera’s technological capabilities.

CONEXPO-CON/AGG 2023 may have come to a close, but we’re just getting started exploring the equipment, technology, and job site solutions that were introduced at the show. At CONEXPO-CON/AGG 2023, manufacturers focused heavily on the operator experience in the cab, ease of operation, fuel efficiency, electrification, and delivering solutions tailored to the needs of a contractor – whether that contractor wants to leverage the latest technology, or wants a hard-working machine without the extras, the options were there. Here is a first look at some major introductions from the show covering the earthmoving, roadbuilding, and aggregates sectors. We’ll take a deeper dive into technology introduced at CONEXPO in our May issue, and stay tuned for more coverage of electric machines this summer.

CONEXPO-CON/AGG 2023 SHOW REVIEW

LATEST EARTHMOVING INTRODUCTIONS DELIVER HYDRAULIC EFFICIENCY AND SIMPLIFIED OPERATION

At CONEXPO-CON/AGG 2023, manufacturers across the board made it clear that they are focused on producing earthmoving machines that deliver simplified operation and greater efficiency to benefit a contractor’s bottom line. Whether it’s updates to improve cab comfort and provide easier control, or a boost in engine and hydraulic performance, we saw a range of options for every business – from the most technologically advanced machine with all the added features, to a simple-to-operate, reliable piece of equipment without too many extras. Here are just a few of the many notable earthmoving introductions from the show.

100-METRIC-TON EXCAVATOR IS DEVELON’S BIGGEST EVER

The new 100-metric-ton DX1000LC-7 is the largest crawler excavator in DEVELON’s next-generation -7 Series lineup. The conventional tail swing excavator is ideal for aggregate and quarry operations as well as heavy construction and infrastructure work. Operators can choose the swing priority mode for bank cutting and when the swing angle is large to increase the swing speed and maximize productivity. The boom up function is prioritized when the swing priority is turned off.

This excavator’s D-ECOPOWER system helps to improve productivity and save fuel. The hydraulic system precisely controls oil flow and optimizes the engine’s available horsepower. A 360-degree all-around view monitor provides a bird’seye view for maximum visibility.

JOHN DEERE P-TIER EXCAVATORS DELIVER HYDRAULIC, ENGINE, AND UNDERCARRIAGE UPDATES

John Deere focused on new and updated excavators at CONEXPO including the new 85 P-Tier and 510

P-Tier current-generation excavators. Compared to the 85 G-Tier model, the new 85 P-Tier delivers an 18 percent engine horsepower increase and the addition of a turbo for high-altitude performance. Hydraulic performance improvements include increased pump torque and improved dig forces. The larger, redesigned cab features an eight-inch monitor with Bluetooth and a 270-degree camera system integrated into the main monitor. Optional features include an angle blade with float and continuous flow auxiliary hydraulics.

Weighing in at 51 metric tons, the 510 P-Tier is a replacement of the current 470 P-Tier model. It has a variable undercarriage and the ability to handle buckets five yards and above. By using a more efficient powertrain, including the integration of e-fans, John Deere says it has reduced maintenance and fuel costs.

PROTOTYPE NEXTGENERATION VOLVO EXCAVATOR IS A PREVIEW OF THE LINEUP TO COME

Volvo Construction Equipment’s prototype EC500

crawler excavator is a preview of the first model in the company’s next-generation excavator lineup. This 50-ton model is the successor to the Volvo EC480E.

The cab has a new layout and features including a high-definition co-pilot screen, keyless engine start, wired and wireless smartphone charging, and a new work mode switch.

Volvo has added Volvo Smart View with Obstacle Detection, delivering operators a 360-degree view with an improved camera system and a new radar detection system.

Volvo Active Control, an automated grading system, will also be available for the first time on an excavator of this size.

New electric joysticks allow for more control over the hydraulic system which can be operated together as well as virtually disconnected. This allows the operator to control the boom without affecting track speed, delivering safety benefits and a smoother ride. This also increases controllability, shortens cycle times, and improves fuel efficiency.

Comfort Driver Control allows the operator to move forwards, backwards, and

steer with the joysticks. The EC500 has an increased cooling capacity that can handle more extreme weather conditions and delivers longer service intervals.

CASE FEATURES UTILITY PLUS AND CONSTRUCTION KING MODELS FROM UPDATED BACKHOE LINE

CASE is reviving the Construction King name while adding brand-new backhoe loader models to its lineup. The line will include five new models, with two available immediately: the Utility Plus and the CASE 580SV Construction King centre pivot. Three more will follow later in 2023: the 580SV Construction King side shift, and two CASE 695SV Construction King models, one with centre pivot and one with side shift.

According to CASE, the allnew Utility Plus delivers fullsized backhoe performance in an efficient platform. This 74-hp machine features a big cab with excellent sightlines to all work areas, ease of service with a maintenance-free emissions system, and easy controls (including a choice of pilot or mechanical).

The CASE 580SV Construc tion King brings a tool carri er-style front end back to the CASE backhoe line in North America, ideal for operators who use the loader end as a primary material handler.

CATERPILLAR SIMPLIFIES OPERATION OF NEW SMALL WHEEL LOADERS

Caterpillar’s new Next Generation 926, 930, and 938 wheel loaders have been designed with advanced technology to simplify machine operation.

Cat’s adaptive engine rpm feature automatically adjusts engine speed based on operator input, and systems on these loaders are optimized and sized to run at lower engine rpms for better fuel efficiency. Larger pumps run at slower speeds to reduce wear and extend service life.

Four powertrain options are available on these loaders. In-cab pushbutton kickout settings for upper, lower, and tilt allow operators to match bucket position to the task. A new bucket shake feature provides precise metering of materials and cleans the bucket.

KOMATSU 20TON ELECTRIC EXCAVATOR

Coming soon to North America is Komatsu’s 20-ton PC210LCE electric excavator. It features lithium-ion battery technology developed by Proterra, has 451 kWh of battery capacity, and will operate for up to eight hours on a single charge. It delivers low noise levels and zero engine vibrations.

At CONEXPO, it was displayed with Smart Construction Retrofit, a guidance kit that gives operators in the field and managers in the office access to both 2D and 3D design and payload data to help drive accuracy, control load volumes, and improve operations. The technology can be installed by a Komatsu distributor and is designed to improve grading performance.

MID-SIZE LIEBHERR WHEEL LOADERS ARE BUILT FOR TOUGH APPLICATIONS

Liebherr says its new midsize wheel loaders are designed to deliver a significant

increase in performance compared to the previous models. Liebherr reinforced the steel construction of the front section to prepare the machines for handling heavy loads. Intelligent assistance systems include active personnel detection with brake assistant and the revised Skyview 360° camera system.

The new generation includes three models with bucket sizes between 2.9 and 3.9 cubic yards (2.2 and 3.0 cubic metres). The L 526 offers 20 percent more engine power and more than 20 percent higher breakout forces than its predecessor. The L 538 and L 546 models also feature performance updates, including optimized travel drive that delivers increased traction.

HITACHI UPDATES EXCAVATOR HYDRAULIC SYSTEM

Hitachi Construction Machinery Americas introduced new excavators including the ZX210LC-7 excavator for earthmoving,

material handling, demolition, and more.

The new machine offers a maximum dig depth of 21 feet 11 inches, and a bucket breakout force of 35,520 pounds. Its next-generation TRIAS III hydraulic system reduces fuel consumption while optimizing performance. A three-pump system, TRIAS III ensures the machine responds quickly to all control inputs, while minimizing hydraulic losses. A new arm roll-in metering control valve allows hydraulic pump power to be reduced when the arm is operated with a low load. When digging, the roll-in metering control valve reduces hydraulic pressure loss to the tank, decreasing the pump power needed for digging and improving fuel efficiency.

LBX COMPANY IMPROVES PERFORMANCE AND ENERGY EFFICIENCY

Link-Belt Excavator Company’s new X4S series of excavators is an update to the

X4 series.

The Link-Belt 170 X4S, 190 X4S, 220 X4S, 260 X4S, and 300 X4S are designed to increase durability, performance, serviceability, and operator comfort, says the company.

With new features on all models, such as custom flow balance, customizable joystick function buttons, new work modes, and Trimble Ready components, LBX says that the new X4S has improved efficiency and up to five percent improved cycle times.

Additional options include HD arms, WAVES +, reversible engine fans, and Precision Grade on select models.

Dynamic stability control; payload, height, and depth alarms; and a digital level are all standard on the 220 X4S.

NEW PLAYERS ENTER WHEELED EXCAVATOR MARKET

Takeuchi and CASE Construction Equipment entered the North American wheeled excavator market at CONEXPO-CON/AGG 2023. DEVELON branched out into the mini wheeled excavator size class, and Wacker Neuson’s latest wheeled excavator update is compatible with forward-looking attachment technology. While still a niche product, all of these manufacturers have expressed that awareness and interest in wheeled excavators is showing significant growth in North America.

CASE RE-ENTERS WHEELED EXCAVATOR MARKET

CASE Construction Equipment previewed its re-entry into the wheeled excavator market in North America by displaying the new WX175E SR. It has a short radius design ideal for working in metro areas and on roadside projects. CASE says its new wheeled excavators feature powerful hydraulic performance, massive attachment

flexibility, and a premium operator experience with a large comfortable cab. The WX175E SR easily self-transports from site-to-site with maximum travel speeds up to 22 mph.

It weighs in at just over 44,000 pounds and operates at a rated 173 hp at 2,200 rpm.

DEVELON PREVIEWS ITS FIRST WHEELED MINI EXCAVATOR

The DX65W-7 will be DEVELON’s first wheeled mini

excavator for North America. The company says it will be ideal for excavating, grading, and backfilling tasks.

This mini wheeled excavator features standard telematics, powerful digging and lifting, attachment versatility, excellent operator comfort, and durability, according to DEVELON. The machine is powered by a DEVELON DM02 diesel engine. A backfill blade comes standard and single or double tire configurations are available.

TAKEUCHI DISPLAYS ITS FIRST WHEELED EXCAVATOR

Takeuchi’s first wheeled excavator for North America will be the TB395W. This model has two four-wheel steering modes – 4WS (allwheel steering) and 4WSC (crab steering). A wide range, longer stick arm allows for greater clearance between the bucket and dozer blade. Operators of the TB395W can pull the bucket all the way to the dozer blade, which is ideal when working in narrow spaces or moving an obstacle out of the way. Auto Cruise enables operators to set and adjust their travel speeds and is ideal for attachments that

require a consistent, repeatable travel speed.

This excavator weighs 10,625 kg (23,425 pounds) when equipped with outriggers and a blade. It’s powered by an 85 kW (113.9 hp) engine.

WACKER NEUSON ADDRESSES FUTURE ATTACHMENT STANDARDS

Wacker Neuson’s newly redesigned 10-ton EW100 is the largest excavator in Wacker Neuson’s lineup and is designed with an intelligent attachment management system, MiC 4.0, which allows for universal communication and compatibility between attachment and equipment manufacturers. Wacker Neuson says that when the new EW100 becomes available in mid-2023, it will be one of the first machines compatible with this standard to come to market and will be ready for future updates.

The EW100 will be available with two fuel-efficient Perkins diesel engine options; standard 74-hp with speeds up to 18.6 mph, or the high-performance model featuring a 136-hp engine and travel speeds up to 24 mph.

CRUSHERS AND SCREENS FOCUS ON MOBILITY AND PRODUCTION

The aggregate industry is always on the lookout for ways to improve efficiency in the quarry, and at CONEXPO this year trends leaned toward productivity increases thanks to updated designs and more throughput. Manufacturers made an impact with crushers and screens of all kinds, which featured greater mobility, electrical operation, and other updates that come together in more efficient and profitable machines.

MOBILE IMPACT CRUSHER FROM ANACONDA

The newest mobile impact crusher from Anaconda is an option for quarries and recycling operations. The I12Rv3 Impact Crusher, a midsized machine, is powered

by a Cummins L9 Performance engine. It features a 43-inch-diameter, 4-bar rotor on a 45-inch-wide Universal Crushers Impact Chamber. A large hopper area and aggressive vibrating pan feeder with a two-tier grizzly section ensure movement of feed

material to the impact chamber while removing fines and smaller dirt. Equally sized 12-foot decks top and bottom make up the 12- by 5-foot double-deck screenbox.

TRACKED CONE CRUSHER FROM FINLAY

Crusher owners and operators want high capacity from their cone crushers, and Finlay says its C-1550+ Tracked Cone Crusher has proven that ability through the development process. Built around the Terex 1300X Cone Crusher, the C-1550+ features an accessible power pack surrounded by large catwalks for quick access, along with mechanical and common upper frame designs for easy maintenance. The hopper folds hydraulically and locks in place from ground level for efficient set-up and teardown.

FULL ELECTRIC PLUG-IN KEESTRACK IMPACTOR

Keestrack’s focus on electric plug-in machines continues with the R5E impact crusher.

The R5e can plug into a mains connection or be run by a genset. It is available with a removable engine that can be used to power the crusher and other equipment as well. The R5e processes up to 440 tph. The crusher has an inlet opening of 31 by 41 inches and is driven by a 200 kW electric motor. It is fitted with a double-deck pre-screen as well as a two-deck precision screen that can be placed in closed circuit.

TEREX MPS ADDS NEW PORTABLE CONE PLANT AND SCREEN

The new CRC 1350S portable plant from Terex MPS is mobile and built around the TC1300X cone, a 400-hp crushing unit with high-efficiency roller bearings. It’s paired with a TSV7203P 7-foot-wide three-deck horizontal screen which increases throughput and product shape. Also new is the ESX620 horizontal screen, which has greater clearances between decks for easier access to screen media. It features updates to the drivetrain and suspension.

SUPERIOR’S CLOSED CIRCUIT PLANT PRODUCES UP TO FOUR PRODUCTS

Versatility is key for the new Superior Industries Portable Sentry HSI Closed Circuit Plant, which is designed to crush a variety of materials and produce up to four unique products out of a single feed. Built around a Superior 4250 Sentry horizontal shaft impactor, the plant is fed by a 48- by 18-inch Intrepid Vibrating Grizzly Feeder equipped with interchangeable cassettes. A two-deck Anthem inclined screen sorts up to three material sizes with returning material fed back via a recirculating conveyor.

KLEEMANN SCREEN OPTIMIZES MATERIAL FLOW

Making its first appearance in the U.S. was the Kleemann MOBISCREEN MSS 802i EVO mobile screen for coarse elements. The plant’s design and conversion options provide optimal material flow of natural stone and recycled material. Adapting the MSS 802i EVO to new application conditions can be done with a broad range of screen surfaces and screening parameters. For example, if there’s a need for a fine final product to be screened from coarse feed, a quick conversion from three to two final grain sizes can be done.

DIESEL AND ALTERNATIVE FUELS CENTRAL FOR ENGINE MANUFACTURERS

New power options for off-highway equipment were everywhere at CONEXPO-CON/AGG 2023. One trend was obvious across the board for engine manufacturers: diesel remains at the core of the heavy construction industry.

NEW CATERPILLAR DIESEL PLATFORM

The high-performance C13D is a ground-up engine design from Caterpillar that is intended to provide higher power density, torque, and fuel efficiency in a smaller package size with power ratings from 456 to 690 hp. Cat expects a 20 percent boost in power and up to 25 percent low-speed torque increase. The C13D will be able to run 100 percent HVO (hydrotreated vegetable oil) and biodiesel, and the architecture allows for future development of natural gas and hydrogen fuel capabilities.

KUBOTA EXPLORES HYDROGEN AND HYBRIDS

Kubota debuted a 3.8-litre hydrogen combustion engine at CONEXPO that offers spark ignition and generates 85 kW (114 hp) of power. Kubota is also focusing on hybrid technology including the D1803 P1 Hybrid. It features an integrated motor generator embedded within the flywheel housing. Kubota also displayed the D1105 P2 Hybrid. This engine generates a rated output of 28.4 hp (18.5 kW) and can transition between diesel and electric motor drive while in operation. Kubota has approved the use of HVO in its diesel engines for North America.

FPT INDUSTRIAL ADDS MULTI-FUEL CAPABILITY

The new F28 family of engines from FPT Industrial is designed to provide the performance of a 3.4-litre engine

in a 2-litre package. The F28 is designed with a multi-fuel capability, sharing common base components for diesel, natural gas, and hybrid versions. The F28 PowerPack includes all aftertreatment components and is designed to simplify installation. It features maximum power of 55 kW (75 hp). FPT also showed a hybrid version of the F28, which features a renewable diesel compatible engine paired with an e-flywheel.

JOHN DEERE ENGINE ARCHITECTURE UPDATED

John Deere Power Systems’ Next Generation JD4, JD14, and JD18 engines range from 48 to 908 hp. The JD4 is the latest addition, generating up to 161 hp and is designed with a new rear gear train that is quieter and provides high PTO power. As it builds out the new line of engines, JDPS is also focusing on its existing

offerings, including a new 9.0L JD9 designed to be less complex and reduce installation costs, while maintaining quality and reliability. John Deere states that biodiesel and renewable diesel fuel will be the most promising options for off-highway equipment.

FUEL-AGNOSTIC RANGE EXPANDS FOR CUMMINS

Cummins showed a new 15-litre fuel-agnostic engine platform to help decarbonize heavy-duty off-highway applications. It uses a base engine that is then built upon with cylinder heads and fuel systems tailored for carbon-free hydrogen or biogas, resulting in up to 90 percent carbon reduction. The 15-litre hydrogen engine produces up to 530 hp, compared to 510 from the natural gas variant. An advanced diesel version, meanwhile, can use HVO or biodiesel and is designed for ratings up to 650 hp.

UPDATES HIT THE ROAD FOR PAVERS, ROLLERS, AND MORE

Electrification continued to make inroads among roadbuilding equipment at CONEXPO 2023, especially in the tandem asphalt roller segment. That wasn’t the only innovation on display, however. Many machines have been made easier to operate thanks to new technology and control systems. Manufacturers also offered new sizes of machines that ensure contractor fleets cover all sizes of roadbuilding jobs.

VOLVO OPENS ORDERS FOR ELECTRIC COMPACTOR

The DD25 electric asphalt compactor uses the same architecture and components as Volvo’s electric compact excavator and wheel loaders, and with zero emissions is a good fit for urban or sensitive environments. Volvo says the DD25 is expected to run a full shift on a single charge, depending on intensity of the job, and can charge quickly using its on-board charger or through DC fast charging. It offers 24 kW of available power, 30 percent more than the conventional Volvo DD25B, which makes it more responsive in terms of speed and vibrations.

LEEBOY’S LARGEST ASPHALT PAVER

The newest paver from LeeBoy fills a demand gap between commercial and highway-class machines, and in the process becomes LeeBoy’s largest tracked asphalt machine. The 8680

paver features an updated HD Pro Screed and has the ability to pave up to 300 feet per minute using high-speed smooth rubber tracks. It is powered by a Kubota Tier 4 Final engine producing 210 hp and weighs in at 28,000 pounds.

COMBINATION CONCRETE MACHINE FROM GOMACO

Building on its successful GP360 combination concrete slipform paver placer/ spreader, GOMACO’s new GP460 can take on even wider jobs. Built on the twotrack GP4 slipform paver framework, the GP460 can pave widths up to 40 feet and place/spread at up to 50 feet. The prime mover is equipped with vibrator circuits for paving and auger drive circuits for placing. A high-volume 60-inch conveyor belt has a discharge speed of up to 492.5 feet per minute. The GP460 uses the GOMACO-exclusive G+ digital control system for easy conversion between applications.

HAMM DESIGNS PNEUMATIC TIRE ROLLER FOR CHIPSEAL WORK

Hamm has targeted the chipseal market with its new HP 100i articulated pneumatic-tire roller, based on the internationally successful HD+ series. Five wheels on the front axle and four on the rear provide a working width of 68 inches and overlapping that ensures homogeneous compaction. The roller comes in three different operating weights and with ballast kits designed to allow individual modules to be attached or detached as required. The HP 100i is available with different operator station options – open with ROPS, a protective roof, or a ROPS cab.

DYNAPAC TANDEM ROLLER LINE

Dynapac’s new range of tandem asphalt rollers are available in articulated and pivot steer configurations. These machines in the 8- to 10-ton range have drum widths between 59 and 66 inches. First to be introduced is the CC2200 VI, an 8-ton machine

that takes cues from its larger Dynapac counterparts, like full seat rotation, efficient eccentric system combined with an active ECO mode for lower fuel consumption, and more. A full-colour touchscreen provides control options for the operator, and Dynapac’s SEISMIC technology encourages optimal compaction.

ZERO-EMISSION COMPACTION FROM BOMAG

BOMAG has stepped into the electric machine sector with its BW 100 AD e-5 electric tandem roller, a 2.5-ton machine which produces zero emissions and low noise. The roller has a 39.4-inch rolling width, and is powered by a 48V system with long-lasting 25 kWh lithium-ion batteries that BOMAG says offer plenty of capacity for a typical day. The e-PERFORMANCE system features two electric motors, one for travel and the other for steering and vibration. Vibration can be controlled individually on both drums. The operator’s platform is isolated to improve comfort on the job.

TECHNOLOGY EXPANDS ON WIRTGEN MILLING MACHINES

Wirtgen’s F-Series line of milling machines is now available with expanded technology options: Mill Assist machine control and Wirtgen Performance Tracker (WPT). Mill Assist can adjust engine and drum speed to deliver precise power while reducing fuel consumption and pick wear. WPT uses a laser scanner to determine the cross-sectional profile to be milled, then GPS and other sensors precisely determine performance and milling volume. Reports can be shown on the machine’s display or sent by email.

PAVERS AND COLD MILLING MACHINES ON DISPLAY FROM ASTEC

Astec RP-175 and RP-195 track pavers have upgrades to maintenance and operator experience, along with styling. New lightweight hoods make daily access easier with no need for hydraulics, and a new cooling system runs more quietly and efficiently.

Redesigns to the track system focused on durability and easier maintenance. On the milling side, the RX-405 is a smaller cold planer that is versatile in different applications. New control stations focus on operator comfort and intuitive use. Design updates make drum changes and maintenance faster and easier.

CATERPILLAR LAUNCHES THREEDIMENSIONAL SCREED PLATES

Cat Paving wants contractors to knead their asphalt surfaces thanks to the unique SDX screed plate. A three-dimensional angular surface on the front of the plates is followed by a tapering smooth surface near the back. The plates manipulate and knead the mix as it passes through the angular grooves, which helps to improve structural integrity of the asphalt, lessen compactor shoving, strengthen unconfined edges, and promote better surface temperature uniformity. The plates are paired with a new fastening design to reduce screed plate changing times.

MANUFACTURERS EXPAND COMPACT EARTHMOVING EQUIPMENT PRODUCT RANGES

Growth in the compact segment has led manufacturers to expand their product ranges into new categories. This year DEVELON, Yanmar, and Hyundai are all introducing their first skid-steer or compact track loaders to North America. CASE is expanding its mini excavator lineup to meet demand, which includes the introduction of its first two electric models. Here are a few highlights from the many compact earthmoving machines introduced at CONEXPO.

WACKER NEUSON REDESIGNS REAR LINKAGE FOR MAXIMUM VISIBILITY ON ITS SMALLEST CTL

Wacker Neuson has introduced its smallest CTL without sacrificing the all-important visibility that operators want. The ST27 weighs in at 7,350 pounds and has a rated operating capacity of 1,890 pounds (at 35 percent of tip).

This low operating weight, combined with a 74-hp Kohler KDI 2504 turbocharged engine, enables the ST27 to deliver an excellent powerto-weight ratio, according to Wacker Neuson.

This machine, which is 60 inches wide and under 80 inches tall, is ideal for working in tight spaces with low overhead clearance.

It has a hinge pin height of 120 inches and dump height of 94.3 inches, and forward reach at dump height is 36.5 inches.

The vertical loader arm linkage is designed to maximize visibility to the rear –the shape of the rear linkage

aligns with the cab posts in the operator’s line of sight to minimize visual obstructions. The dedicated track frame design allows for a lower profile loader arm orientation, improving side visibility.

YANMAR ENTERS COMPACT TRACK LOADER MARKET

Yanmar Compact Equipment expanded into a new category at CONEXPO with the introduction of its first CTLs. The TL65RS, TL75VS, TL80VS, and TL100VS deliver power ranging from 67 to 103.5 hp and complement Yanmar’s line of mini excavators, compact wheel loaders, and tracked carriers.

These machines feature Tier 4 Final Yanmar diesel engines, and Yanmar says it focused on providing the ideal operator experience. Full 360-degree visibility and a standard suspended seat for enhanced comfort are included. A removable roof hatch escape is a safety feature for operators.

Options include a work tool positioner, return-to-position technology, self-levelling,

ride control, and auto 2-speed capability.

DEVELON TEASES FIRST COMPACT TRACK LOADER WITH PROTOTYPE

DEVELON previewed a prototype of its new 116-hp DTL35 CTL, the company’s first ever. This large-frame model is designed for high-performance grading and excavating. It will come standard with a torsion suspension system, providing a smooth ride and additional stability with lifting and carrying loads. Optional high-flow auxiliary hydraulics, up to 40 gpm, will be available.

The machine’s cab is designed to provide operators with excellent visibility, and a rear-view camera is standard. An optional 360-degree allaround-view monitoring camera system will be available.

NEW CASE MINI EXCAVATOR SERIES INCLUDES TWO ELECTRIC MODELS

CASE Construction Equipment is introducing a new

mini excavator series that includes the company’s first two electrified models and a new diesel-powered model. More models will be added in 2024.

By the end of 2023, CASE will offer two all-new electric mini excavators, the CX15EV and the CX25EV. The CX15EV weighs 3,186 pounds powered by a 21-hp (16-kW) electric motor, and the CX25EV weighs 4,828 pounds running with a 27-hp (20-kW) electric motor. The lithium-ion battery is charged either by the 110V/220V on-board charger, or via an external rapid charger that can charge typically within 90 minutes. Depending on the application, these machines will work a full eight-hour day.

A colour LCD monitor delivers battery information, machine settings, and work modes. Both machines have 1-way/2-way hydraulics with an electronic detent hold to reduce operator fatigue, and an optional second auxiliary circuit (2-way only) can be added. A quick coupler is optional.

FIRST HYUNDAI SKIDSTEER AND COMPACT TRACK LOADERS

Hyundai Construction Equipment Americas’ new large-frame SSL and CTL, the HS and HT Series models, feature Tier 4 Final Hyundai HTI4 four-cycle, turbocharged, electronically controlled diesel engines. These new engines deliver 70 net hp (52 kW) at 2,200 rpm. The HS120V SSL has a rated operating capacity of 2,690 pounds (1,220 kg), and its heaped bucket capacity is 0.58 cubic yards (0.44 cubic metres). The HT100V CTL has a rated operating capacity of 2,300 pounds (1,220 kg), and its heaped bucket capacity is 0.58 cubic yards (0.44 cubic metres).

Standard features include a multi-function joystick, a vertical lift path, and twospeed travel. Hyundai says that operators will appreciate the cabin which features excellent visibility, air conditioning, an easy open/close sliding door, and LED working lights. Both models have a hydraulic quick coupler.

Options include a high-flow hydraulic system and ride control.

JOHN DEERE ADDS NEW COMPACT MACHINES TO PERFORMANCE TIERING STRATEGY

John Deere’s new generation of large-frame CTLs and SSLs are the first models under the company’s performance tiering strategy. At CONEXPO, John Deere showed three of the five machines in this new generation, including the 333 P-Tier CTL, the all-new 334 P-Tier SSL, and 335 P-Tier CTL. These machines have redesigned cabs including heated/ vented seats, touchscreen displays, Bluetooth technology, and JDLink telematics. Surround view capability is optional. John Deere says that the brand-new 334 P-Tier and 335 P-Tier are optimized for customers who require more horsepower and hydraulic flow from a compact machine – with 118 gross horsepower in addition to pressure compensated load sensing hydraulics.

MID-SIZE EXCAVATOR GETS VOLVO CE ELECTRIC MAKEOVER

If last month’s CONEXPO-CON/AGG is any indication, the in dustry’s transition toward more sustainable power options is about to really take off. More governments and even private companies are establishing emissions reduction goals or regu lations, and OEMs are responding.

For several years, compact equipment has been the front line for electrification. Volvo Construction Equipment, for example, now has six compact electric machines. But as demand grows, the equipment will too.

That’s why Volvo CE took its new EC230 Electric excavator to CONEXPO. As the first medium-size, in-house-designed exca vator in the industry, it’s already available in select European markets with availability to order in North America coming in the second half of 2024.

“We’ve had great customer feedback on the compact electric machines but also a lot of people asking for larger electrified equipment,” says Lars Arnold, product manager – electromobility for Volvo CE. “Compact was the logical place to start because of existing battery size and capacity, and now we’re taking learnings from those to bring higher capacity batteries into the picture.”

This new 23-ton electric crawler excavator is based on the conventional diesel-powered EC220E, and Volvo says it will de liver the same, if not better, performance with the added bene fits of zero emissions and a low total cost of ownership (largely due to eliminating the engine and related maintenance).

The EC230 Electric is expected to achieve a 60 to 70 percent reduction of energy running costs compared to the EC220E. The OEM says operators will love the instant torque from the electric motor compared to the slight delay they get from some diesel-powered machines.

The EC230 Electric is a general-purpose machine designed for extraction, earthmoving, and grading for site prep in the building segment, as well as waste and scrap handling in the recycling and waste segments.

Customers can expect 4 to 5 hours of operating time on one charge, and charging with a DC fast charger over lunch will allow it to run another 4 to 5 hours in the afternoon. Customers can then charge the machine overnight for the next day’s work.

“Some people are skeptical about a larger electric machine’s ability to work all day, but with the right charging solution and an open mind, it is not as difficult as it may seem,” says Arnold.

hus, Denmark – a city with similar ambitions to those of Volvo CE in terms of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040. It was used to excavate the centre of a construction site ready for building, and key learnings from that project helped engineers improve upon battery capacity.

Volvo CE emphasized alternative power solutions throughout its CONEXPO booth with a hydrogen fuel cell hauler prototype, multiple compact battery-electric models available to test drive,

various charging solutions from partner companies, and product managers available to discuss conventional machines’ fuel efficiency and ability to run on renewable diesel.

“Battery electric machines will not be the perfect solution for every application or location, but they work for more situations than you might think,” says Arnold. “We’re excited to continue developing sustainable power options for all kinds of customers to continue building the future we all want to live in.”

WHAT’S THE SCOOP ON SITE DUMPERS?

THESE VERSATILE MACHINES SAVE TIME ON TIGHT JOB SITES

If you visit a construction job site in Europe, chances are pretty good that you will see a site dumper. In fact, over the course of the project, you might see a whole fleet of site dumpers. The crew will probably start by using a 9-ton model as they clear the site, transition to a 6-ton when they’re moving material, then go down to the 3-ton dumper to put the finishing touches on landscaping.

You’re less likely to see a site dumper in North America, much less an entire fleet. However, contractors looking for compact equipment solutions that offer more for their investment are starting to take notice of the factors that make the equipment so popular overseas. With advanced safety features and a compact footprint, site dumpers offer outstanding efficiency and safety on all job sites – especially those where space is at a premium.

MULTIPLE INDUSTRIES INTERESTED IN SITE DUMPERS

While contractors in Europe, accustomed to compact job sites, have long appreciated the benefits of the site dumper in industries ranging from construction to aggregate, landscape and more, North America’s wide-open spaces invited and allowed larger equipment. Now, as urban sprawl continues and job sites become smaller with heightened safety concerns, contractors across multiple industries are reconsidering the site dumper. Site dumpers first gained acceptance in North America in the concrete market. With numerous jobs requiring the delivery of concrete in tight areas that simply won’t accommodate a large mixer truck or pump truck, site dumpers paired with an optional concrete chute accessory offer a viable and efficient solution. The chute provides the added benefit of precisely dumping the

concrete where it’s needed without splashing, effectively minimizing any cleanup.

Landscaping applications are also popular. With the ability to move much more material than a skid steer without tearing up turf, the site dumpers offer an ideal solution for not only hardscaping applications but also mulching and maintenance.

SMALLER EQUIPMENT DRAWING BIG ATTENTION

As job sites continue to get tighter, construction challenges are driving up demand in general construction applications. Contractors seek solutions to efficiently move material to, from and around job sites in rapidly expanding urban developments. With the ability to haul a variety of materials ranging from gravel to sand, dirt, waste and more, site dumpers enhance safety with compact operation, exceptional visibility, and enhanced safety features.

Perhaps at the heart of expanding acceptance is the enhanced efficiency site dumpers offer over traditional equipment solutions. Some manufacturers offer 3-ton site dumper models with capacities of 1.3 cubic yards for liquid material such as concrete, 1.7 cubic yards for struck material such as aggregate and 2.5 cubic yards for heaped material like mulch. Though skid steers were once the standard for moving a variety of materials, contractors are finding that replacing a skid with a site dumper and mini excavator duo often results in three to four times the material handling capacity. In addition, because the material can be loaded directly into the skip – or bucket – and left there until maneuvered wherever needed, then dumped, instead of moving material multiple times with a skid

steer, efficiency is increased.

A more compact design and tighter operating footprint further enhances efficiency. The forward and swivel tipping mechanisms of site dumpers allow contractors to maintain a small job site footprint and improve safety. Unlike skid steers, most site dumpers swivel and tip material out of the bucket without the need to reposition the entire machine. This allows operation in tighter spaces and minimizes additional maneuvering around an already tight job site, further benefitting site safety.

Perhaps the biggest area for growth in general construction applications is found in the growing urbanization of North America. As more people move to cities, single and multi-family developments flourish and homes are consistently getting closer together.

Working space is getting smaller and smaller. Imagine a 9-ton site dumper used in the early stages to hold and move excavated material for basements or water and sewer lines, or to haul fill to build up lots before digging a basement. Then, as basements are dug and curb and gutter put in, the 9-ton unit is replaced by a 6-ton site dumper hauling concrete for basements and driveways or gravel fill for basements and water lines. Finally, as the houses fill in, a 3-ton site dumper appears on site to haul dirt for fine grading and mulch or rock for landscaping.

HOW TO SELECT THE RIGHT SITE DUMPER

To realize the numerous benefits of the site dumper, it is paramount that contractors not just choose any brand or model, but a high-quality one from a trusted manufacturer. While site dumpers may seem like pretty simple and straightforward

equipment solutions, don’t be fooled into thinking the only difference between them is the paint and the price. Many features, though subtle to the eye, greatly affect things like safety, ease of operation, and performance. It’s important to pay attention to some key details.

As sites get smaller and pressures increase to get more done, a keen focus on safety protects not only the operator but the entire job site and the company as a whole. Site dumpers designed with precise attention to detail, ensuring perfectly symmetrical wheels equal distance from the centre articulation post of the machine, maximize safety and stability even while driving through heavily rutted areas in mud or other unstable terrain. This reduces the risk of tipping and provides a smooth ride, as the back wheels follow the same path as the front at all times.

With current labour shortages, especially a lack of skilled or experienced labour, ease of use and intuitive controls present another key consideration. Contractors gravitate toward models with controls that are easy to learn and use, benefitting safety, and allowing for a lower barrier to entry for operators at any experience level.

Finally, some manufacturers produce site dumpers with engines rated under 75 hp. This helps avoid diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) and diesel particulate filter (DPF) related maintenance.

As the array of site dumper benefits – including capacity, efficiency, safety, and reduced diesel maintenance – become more apparent in North America, the growth of the site dumper market will undoubtedly increase.

The AUSA DR601AG reversible dumper has a 6,000 kg (13,200 pound) payload capacity, and the reversible design means the seat can rotate 180 degrees and all components including the steering wheel, joystick, pedals, and safety cameras adjust to the driver’s new position. The driver can enter and exit from either side of the dumper. An ECO mode controls engine speed automatically to reduce fuel consumption and emissions. A Hill Holder system engages the brake when the accelerator is released at zero speed.

The Mecalac TA3SH features Power Swivel technology which offers forward and swivel tipping mechanisms, allowing the load to rotate 90 degrees on either side before being tipped. This makes the machine more productive with less movement. The TA3SH has a 3,000 kg (6,613 pound) payload. All Mecalac Power Swivel site dumpers feature a heavy-duty locking device that keeps the skip facing forward while on the move. Available operator technologies include Start/Stop Control, Mecalac’s Capture telematics solution, and Hazard Detection.

Wacker Neuson’s newest dumper is designed to work in tight spaces and on rough terrain. A 3-ton payload machine, it is powered by a 45.3-hp Stage V Perkins engine that provides efficient cycle times. The DW30 is easy for operators to use. Hydrostatic all-wheel drive makes the dumper maneuverable and a single joystick control manages all machine functions. The DW30 can travel up to 15.5 mph, and a 180-degree swivel skip adds precision load placement.

The JCB 1TE electric site dumper is built with all-steel body panels for maximum durability. With components identical to its diesel counterpart, the 1TE will be familiar to end users, but now with the ability to operate with zero emissions and near silence. The 9-hp (7 kW) engine, powered by two 48 V (5 kWh) lithium-ion batteries, works well beyond a full day, while matching the power of a diesel 1-ton dumper at 7 kWh continuous and 20 kW peak power. This machine tips into dumpsters and large containers with ease due to the high tip skip.

CDE plant upgrade matches growing demand for Ontario aggregate producer

Rising demand for aggregate products has led to a sand and gravel supplier partnering with CDE for upgrades to its facility in Uxbridge, Ontario, that will improve efficiency and boost the quality of its natural resources.

Vicdom Sand & Gravel has been supplying a wide variety of aggregate products to customers in Southern Ontario since 1976 from its sand and gravel pits and limestone quarry in the Kawartha Lakes, Brock Township, and Uxbridge areas.

With over 1,000 acres of land licensed for aggregate extraction, Vicdom, from its central pit located 30 minutes northeast of Toronto, works to meet the demands of its customers in the construction industry throughout the region.

Demand has increased for aggregate products thanks to customers looking for a fast and reliable local supply of sand and other resources. To keep up, Vicdom has commissioned a replacement CDE dewatering screen and new 400 mm hydrocyclone to maximize output and material retention from their dredge operation.

“Outdated screening technology was adversely impacting our ability to meet the demands of the market,” explains Bruno Giordano, operations manager at Vicdom.

CDE has replaced the worn screen with its Infinity Screen technology, which the company says is known for its durability and

prolonged operational life.

Benefitting from a fully bolted construction, Infinity Screens have no welds in their trilogy sidewalls, making them fundamentally different from other screens, CDE states. It’s a unique construction that helps to ensure maximum performance, minimum downtime, and fast return on investment for customers.

The new screen integrates seamlessly with the existing plant setup and a new CDE hydrocyclone which utilizes centrifugal force to classify feed material rather than gravity.

Due to the design of the cyclone unit, an increased number of parameters are now available to Vicdom, enabling the sand and aggregate supplier to boost the quality of its end products by significantly reducing moisture content and providing control of silt cut points to eliminate the loss of quality fines.

Operational now for a little over a year, Vicdom’s new CDE screen is processing between 70 and 100 tph of sand coming from the 350 tph dredge feed. Producing a consistent medium sand suitable for use in overall concrete mix, the plant is supporting Vicdom to meet the demands of the local construction market for raw materials.

“This is CDE’s first project with Vicdom and one that provides us with an opportunity to demonstrate our ability to work in an agile way, responding to the individual needs of materials producers. The project also showcases the versatility of our innovative solutions and the hugely positive impact CDE technology

can have on an operation, whether existing or greenfield,” says Adrian Convery, CDE business development manager for Canada.

The new PC35 has a working width of 350 mm (13.8 inches) and 120 mm (5 inch) maximum milling depth, and is intended for operation on side-shift backhoe loaders or 5- to 6-ton mini excavators. Heavy-duty gear motors provide high torque and efficiency across the speed range, while a hydraulic relief valve limits pressure to the motor for increased longevity. A standard pressure gauge provides feedback to the operator to allow for ground speed adjustments.

TIRE AND STEERING OPTIONS FOR MEWPS

GET THE BEST PERFORMANCE OUT OF YOUR MACHINE

To get the maximum performance out of a mobile elevating work platform (MEWP), it is important to consider what type of tire or track is best suited for your job site environment and needs, including:

• Where will you use the lift?

• What are the ground conditions?

TIRE AND TRACK OPTIONS

Non-marking tires: tires without the carbon black found in common tires. They leave no black marks on the floor and are standard on most industrial models. They’re most commonly made of hard rubber but are also available in pneumatic styles. Non-marking tires are good to use if marking is a concern in applications such as late-stage slab construction.

Foam-filled tires: pneumatic tires that are injected with a polyurethane-type substance that adds rigidity to the tires and prevents flats. These are required on some models to provide necessary stability. They are also good for environments with nails and other ground debris.

Air-filled tires: designed to

increase a MEWP’s performance in sensitive ground conditions, such as sand and turf. Air-filled tires are engineered to “float” on soft or delicate surfaces to protect softer surfaces during operation that could be damaged by the more aggressive tread on regular rough-terrain tires.

Rough-terrain tires: tires with an aggressive tread design for improved capability. These are standard on rough-terrain models. These tires are best for unimproved sites and muddy, wet ground conditions. Many rough-terrain tire options are available as non-marking versions for jobs that start as dirt and end as slab.

Independent tracks: a 4-point track system that provides extra traction when travelling over mud, sand, gravel and soft-soil conditions while also minimizing damage to grass. Independent tracks provide greater maneuverability when compared to traditional dual track systems.

ROUGH-TERRAIN MEWP OPTIONS

Rough Terrain (RT) models are designed to travel over unimproved construction site

terrain. The “rough terrain” designation often includes the addition of lug tread tires and combinations of other features including active oscillating axles, engines with higher power ratings, and two- or four-wheel drive.

Oscillating axles are designed to pivot in the middle to compensate for uneven terrain and keep all tires on the ground. Genie active oscillating axles feature a patented automatic hydraulic adjustment system that maintains ground contact and a solid four-point stance, continually adjusting as the machine drives.

Full-time positive traction drive ensures that power reaches all drive wheels, even if one wheel loses traction in mud, snow, or sand, helping machines to overcome uneven terrain.

STEERING OPTIONS FOR MEWPS

Two-wheel steering: A standard type of steering on most models in which the two front tires steer the machine.

Four-wheel steering: A feature on some models in which all four wheels can be utilized to steer the machine, making

it much more maneuverable in compact environments. On Genie equipment, the operator can often select from four steer options, including two-wheel front steer, twowheel rear steer, crab steer, or coordinated steer.

Coordinated or oblique steering: A four-wheel steering option on all Genie GTH telehandlers and many Genie booms in which the front wheels turn in one direction and the rear wheels are coordinated to turn in the opposite direction, allowing the machine to turn around a sharp corner within a minimum amount of space.

Crab Steering: A fourwheel steering feature on all telehandlers and many Genie booms in which all four wheels turn in the same direction, allowing the machine to be driven diagonally for greater maneuverability.

Different worksite conditions require different tire and steering options. When considering what tire is the best fit, it is important to consider where the lift will be used and what the ground conditions will be. Understanding these important features will allow you to get the most out of your MEWP.

Skyjack’s full-size rough-terrain scissor range makes work at six stories with 11.5-foot floorto-floor possible with a work height of 70 feet and an overall capacity of 1,130 pounds. The SJ9664 RT features an axle-based four-wheel drive, has commonality with parts throughout the Skyjack range, and attention has been given to accessibility for service. Solid rubber tires provide a damage-resistant alternative for enhanced protection, while auto-levelling outriggers allow for use in rough conditions.

In addition, control system upgrades provide feedback to improve drive control proportionality. Left and right steer functions now receive renewed digital inputs to ensure a higher level of functionality and improved response. Levelling jack performance has been improved to deliver more accuracy and quicker levelling speeds. Features include a 60-degree swing-out engine tray for enhanced access and fold-down ladder and swing-out tray for easier access to the engine and hydraulics. Operation and control layouts are the same across the line for ease of training and operation.

Optional oscillating axles automatically sense the terrain and adjust the axle position based on ground conditions to maintain stability. For added workspace, a multi-position slide-out extension deck on the front of the platform is standard on all Genie RT models. A rear slide-out extension deck can be added to the GS-4390 for an extra 9 feet (2.74 m). Power to the platform allows workers to use electrically powered tools.

4 S6926RTE, S6933RTE, S6940RTE, and S6947RTE rough-terrain scissors offer working heights ranging from 32 to 53 feet. They feature Snorkel’s lithium-ion battery technology for zero-emission operation that reduces noise levels by up to 60 percent, and an optional on-board generator provides on-the-job battery charging. Platform capacities range from 800 to 1,500 pounds. Two-wheel drive is standard with four-wheel drive available as an option. LIFTWISE HANGING TIRE HANDLER

The new HTH-1400 Hanging Tire Handler from LiftWise is a high-capacity machine for handling, controlling, and maneuvering tires for reliable installation, remov al, or maintenance. With a capacity to lift tires weighing up to 1,400 pounds, the HTH-1400 is fully adjustable to handle tires between 30 and 53 inches and diameter and up to 19 inches in width.

The unique design of the HTH-1400 allows a tire to be easily and precisely positioned by a single operator, maximizing pro ductivity and efficiency for any application. The unit securely clamps to the tire and can rotate it 90 degrees from a horizontal position to a vertical position and back again, allowing tire assemblies to be delivered to the machine flat on a pallet. Also, a 25-degree bi-directional tire rotation ability makes for easier alignment of studs with the tire bolt pattern. Adjustable pins further ensure correct tire orientation.

Battery powered and operated by a tethered controller, the unit is factory set for deliberate, controlled operational speeds. Given the unique equipment design, installation and removal times are expedited compared with alternative methods, but movement speeds can be adjusted to meet more demanding application requirements.

To help ensure safe operation and stability, the HTH-1400 includes a tilt feature that naturally adjusts to any shifts in the load’s centre of gravity. Lights illuminate on the machine when sufficient clamping pressure has been applied to the tire.

EXPANDED BKT PLANT WILL PRODUCE 600,000 METRIC TONS OF OFF-HIGHWAY TIRES PER YEAR BY 2026

KT’s latest plant expansion in Bhuj, India, is targeting a turnover of $2 billion and total annual production of 600,000 metric tons of off-highway tires by the end of 2026.

The Bhuj plant first produced tires in 2012. At that time, the plant was on a 123-acre property. By the end of 2023 it is expected to have a total area of 323 hectares. That additional space allows BKT to add new machines, accommodate more test areas, increase volumes, and continue growth, the company states.

The Bhuj facility also has its own Carbon Black plant.

Sustainability has been incorporated into the facility, including an internal power plant, solar panels, and a cogeneration plant to self-produce energy. In addition, BKT’s Zero Liquid Discharge principle means no liquid waste is released outside the plant – all water is treated, purified, and reused.

The carbon black production process has also become more sustainable; for example, BKT says it has substituted bulk bags with mobile silos, and the whole transportation system has been redesigned to reduce energy usage, consumption, and quality.

ENHANCE WHEEL LOADER SAFETY WITH VOLVO CE’S COLLISION MITIGATION SYSTEM

THE AUTOMATIC BRAKING FEATURE REDUCES THE RISK OF COLLISION WHEN WORKING IN REVERSE

As part of its vision for zero accidents, Volvo CE has developed its collision mitigation system for Volvo wheel loaders – an automatic braking feature that supports operator response and helps reduce the risk or consequences of collision when working in reverse.

According to the company, this marks the first system of its kind from any original equipment manufacturer. The system assists operators while working in reverse and automatically applies service brakes when the wheel loader

approaches any obstacle, alerting the operator to take further action. With wheel loaders spending an average of 40–50 percent of their time driven in reverse, the collision mitigation system is a valuable solution for operators and site managers.

Lars Eriksson, global product manager for wheel loaders at Volvo CE, says “We at Volvo CE continue to proactively develop intelligent solutions which not only mitigate the consequences of accidents but strive to avoid them altogether. This new colli-

sion mitigation system is one important part of our work to reduce the risk of accidents and help fulfill our commitment toward zero accidents.”

HOW IT WORKS

With this new system, operators are moving a step closer to not only eliminating accidents – and therefore improving job site safety for everyone – but also reducing any unplanned interruptions that can be incurred during avoidable knocks and bumps.

It works by identifying when there is a risk of collision, and responds by automatically activating the brakes for two to three seconds to slow the machine down or bring it to a stop prior to impact. This initiation of the braking alerts the operator to intervene. For seamless stockpiling operations, the system will remember the last slope the machine climbed, allowing operators to reverse down a pile without activating it. It can also be temporarily

deactivated for specific site conditions.

Functioning only when the wheel loader is in reverse and driving at speeds of between 3 and 15 km/h (1.86 – 9.32 mph), no matter what gear it is in, it serves as a facilitator to job site safety.

Developed in-house by Volvo CE, the collision mitigation system for Volvo wheel loaders is a factory-fit option currently available on the L110H/L120H equipped with OptiShift, L150H, L180H, L220H, L260H, and L200H High Lift wheel loaders.

Requiring a Radar Detect System to be fitted, it works as an additional system to the existing range of features, options, and site services provided by Volvo CE for its line of wheel loaders, all of which have been designed to promote job site safety and minimize unplanned interruptions. The collision mitigation system is available in all markets around the world.
