bayfield With a year-round population of only 487,

Bayfield holds the title of Wisconsin's Smallest City. As you walk along the lakeshore in Memorial Park, you'll find yourself surrounded by islands, vibrant downtown shopping, and a thriving art scene. You'll witness the ferry making its way to Madeline Island, with visitors waving from the top deck alongside the year-round Island residents. Look up Rittenhouse Avenue, where you'll see a bustling rooftop bar with quiet, elegant Victorian B&Bs in the distance. Look back to Lake Superior and see a chartered sailboat on the way to the sea caves, slowly passing a commercial fishing boat bringing in their catch––your dinner later tonight. Welcome to Bayfield; a proud harbor city with much to offer. Away from the lively streets of Bayfield, spend a quiet day in the orchards and fruit farms. With a climate tempered by proximity to the greatest of the great lakes—Lake Superior— and protected by rolling hills, Bayfield is famous for its fruit 6 | bayfield, wisconsin

production—a rare thing in such northern latitudes. Apple orchards abound in the hills outside of town. Local berry growers produce some of the largest crops of blueberries, raspberries, and strawberries in the Midwest, earning Bayfield the title of Official Berry Capital of the State. Find cider, jellies, jams, preserves, pickles, honey, bakery items, and more at the many farm stores on Bayfield's Fruit Loop. Several wineries, hard cideries, a brewery and distillery are also transforming local fruits into libations. Treat yourself to a tasting while you're here. The local food doesn't stop at fruit. Bayfield is also home to one of the few remaining sustainable fisheries on the Great Lakes—whitefish. Local fisherman bring in a daily catch of salmon, trout, burbot, and whitefish during the season, providing restaurants in the area with fresh healthy food from some of the cleanest water in the world. Restaurants offer visitors whitefish in a myriad of styles: baked, boiled, fried, or smoked. Some even offer whitefish livers, a local delicacy (sautéed or fried). The waters around Bayfield also draw sport fisherman in every season seeking the catch of a lifetime from the deep, cold waters of Lake Superior.

Wisconsin's Smallest City, the Berry Capital of the State, and the Gateway to the Apostle Islands. The list goes on from there. Bayfield holds many distinctions, but underneath all the titles and accolades it is also simply and strikingly beautiful. A small city on the shores of the Big Lake. Plan your adventure and see Bayfield and the Apostle Islands for yourself.

The area is steeped in natural beauty. Hike to waterfalls, cross-country ski through hemlock forests, explore miles of lakeshore. And, of course, Bayfield is the Gateway to the Apostle Islands, a chain of twenty-two islands reaching north and east from the Bayfield peninsula into Lake Superior. Bayfield is home to the ferry terminal that connects travelers (and their vehicles) from the mainland to the only currently inhabited island in the archipelago, Madeline Island. The Madeline Island Ferry Line runs several times a day throughout the year whenever the channel is free enough from ice to operate. In years when the ice is thick enough to hold the weight of cars, a road opens across the channel between Bayfield and La Pointe, the small town on Madeline Island, allowing residents and visitors to drive across the lake for a few short weeks at the peak of winter. Visitors love Bayfield summer, but many boast its winter wonders above all. Our heavy lake effect snow makes the area a mecca for the active sportsperson, with wonderfullygroomed nordic ski trails in the quiet backwoods. Cozy lodging facilities make a perfect home base for quiet winter

enthusiasts as you return from your dog sled adventure or showshoe journey. The best part–you'll have ample opportunity to explore Bayfield winter, as our snow often comes earlier than other midwest destinations. (Thank you, Lake Superior!) Bayfield's historic and vibrant downtown has the feel of a different time. While many cities watched their shops and inns lose out to big box stores and chain hotels, Bayfield held strong. Our downtown is very much alive, storefronts filled with locally owned shops and galleries. A stroll through downtown reveals the brilliant work of the many artisans who call Bayfield home. Real restaurants feature menus for every palate from beautifully plated five-course meals to classic pub burgers. Our hotels, inns, and famous bed & breakfasts— many within walking distance of downtown—give visitors the comfort of home with a personal touch you won't find anywhere else. Come explore Bayfield and the Apostle Islands for yourself. Start planning your adventure today. 2021 travel guide | 7

adventure awaits EXPLORE THE

APOSTLE ISLANDS NATIONAL LAKESHORE

See the beauty of the islands formed long ago by wind, waves, and ice. Hear the history of the people who have called this place home, and how they built a unique life for themselves in the Apostles. See lighthouses, sea stacks, rugged sandstone caves, and beautiful beaches. How many have been influenced by this beautiful national park in far-north Wisconsin on Lake Superior? As you look out on the water from Bayfield, you'll see 22 Apostle Islands, 21 of which are protected as part of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. You may have have driven by Meyers Beach Road off State Highway 13, taking you to the trailhead of the Lakeshore Trail winding above the sea caves. These 21 islands and 12 miles of mainland is sacred. Visitors can enjoy singing sand beaches, abandoned quarries, lighthouses, campsites, and scenic overlooks. Nearby communities, the two tribes, and all who have visited feel the pull of Gichigami and the enduring allure of the islands. Along windswept beaches and cliffs, experience where water meets land and sky, culture meets culture, and past meets present. Hike, paddle, sail, or cruise to experience these Jewels of Lake Superior and take it all in... it's where the water meets the soul.

Apostle Islands National Lakeshore will recognize 50 YEARS (!) as a designated national lakeshore. All year long, area residents, businesses, and visitors will celebrate this special place on the Lake Superior (Gichigami), and its significance to our culture. @heysherwood

Q: Can I go inside the ice caves?

A: The caves themselves are often inaccessible. It's a 2+ mile hike on frozen Lake Superior to get to the caves so everything has to be just right to create a good ice surface. Cold is super important to make good, solid ice. But wind is a major component as well. The National Park Service provides regular updates on ice thickness.

how to explore the apostle islands Discover rugged sea caves, clear water, sandy island beaches, and island forest paths.

@krissy.marie07

Though Apostle Islands National Lakeshore features several points of interest located on the mainland, most people consider the islands themselves to be the most rewarding destination. Getting to these islands on Lake Superior can be a challenge, but there are several ways to experience the beauty of the Apostle Islands.

SIGHTSEEING CRUISE:

FERRY OR WATER TAXI:

See the most in the shortest amount of time! The outer-most islands are over 20 miles away from the mainland. This is a great, easy way to cover that distance. Enjoy an entertaining, narrated tour while you sit back and relax with your camera. (Look for these commercial services on page 30.)

Take a water taxi for a day hiking on one of 22 islands. Madeline Island Ferry Line makes multiple trips each day to Madeline Island. As the official gateway of the Apostle Islands, Bayfield offers chartered island drop-off/pick-up, hiker day trips, and camper shuttles. (Look for these commercial services on page 30.)

@captivated

GUIDED KAYAK TOUR:

CAPTAINED SAILING TRIP: Book an adventure! Discover hidden coves and beaches with one of Bayfield's many sailboat charters. If you're feeling brave, take the helm. You never know... you may want to sign up for sailing classes afterwords. (Look for these commercial services on page 30.)

st

@timjohnkub

Explore at your own pace with a close-up view of the caves. Paddle through the caves in a tandem sea kayak. Half-day, full-day, or multi-day excursions available. We highly recommend joining a guided trip with an experienced & trained outfitter, as Lake Superior can be unsafe. (Look for these commercial services on page 28.)

OR, STICK TO THE MAINLAND! The mainland unit of the park features the most popular and photographed sea caves in the Apostle Islands. Try the Lakeshore Trail to take in the Sea Caves from above! The trail above the caves begins at the Meyers Beach parking lot, 18 miles north of Bayfield and 5 miles east of Cornucopia, on State Hwy 13.

INCREDIBLE VIEWS & ISLAND VIBES

Madeline Island, the largest of the Apostle Islands and the only one not included in the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, is 2.5 miles across the channel from Bayfield, just a 20 minute ferry ride away. In spring, summer, and fall it is accessible via the Madeline Island Ferry Line or private watercraft. In the wintertime, when the lake is frozen, visitors and locals alike use the Ice Road to drive back and forth. The Ice Road uses a similar route as the ferry, but instead of gliding over open water, travelers navigate their own vehicle over frozen Lake Superior. Upon arriving on Madeline Island, visitors are be welcomed to the historic town of La Pointe, with a year-round population of about 250. Boasting shops, restaurants, lodging, and a marina, La Pointe also features a Wisconsin Historical Society museum. Big Bay State Park and the adjacent Big Bay Town Park are not to be missed. Each park offers sand beaches, hiking trails, camping, picnicking, and incredible views of rock formations above the crystal clear Lake Superior water. (Ahem... photo opportunities!)

ADVENTURE AT

@howlinbayfield

A SUMMER GEM It's an outdoor recreation area fitting for a myriad of adventures. Hikers, runners, dog walkers, and mountain biking enthusiasts all enjoy the quiet and unique trails of Mt. Ashwabay. The groomed trails provide peaceful terrain among mature forests. Accept the challenge of making your way to the top of the hill and be rewarded by a breathtaking vista of Lake Superior and the Apostle Islands. The real hidden gem of Ashwabay is the singletrack mountain bike trail system. Beginners and seasoned riders alike will experience the thrill of riding this amazing system of trails that weave their way around Mt. Ashwabay. Over 20 miles of trail have been masterfully crafted by CAMBA (Chequamegon Area Mountain Bike Association), including plenty of elevation, flowy sections, banked turns, and fun features.

@howlinbayfield

Spencer Hardy, cyclist and avid outdoorsman, reviews Mt. Ashwabay bike trails after his ride. “I found the Mt. Ashwabay system to be some of the most fun trails I have ever ridden in the Midwest. You get a wide-open view of the Apostle Islands and Chequamegon Bay from the top. Then things get really fun, with big bermed turns, rock bridge drop-ins, and rock gardens galore. Plenty here to keep you grinning from ear-to-ear the whole way down. From there it is a short and flowy pedal to the start of Tsuga Daddy, my personal favorite trail in the system. This trail rolls on and on and seemingly forever, each climb is rewarded with a fast and snappy downhill with fun little jumps and bumps.” Mt. Ashwabay is a mountain with lots of opportunity to get outdoors and enjoy the beauty of Lake Superior’s South Shore. It's located just 3 miles south of Bayfield and overlooks Lake Superior and the Apostle Islands. Mt. Ashwabay Ski and Recreation Area has something for everyone during every season. It is a favorite place for locals and visitors alike, and the heart of outdoor recreation for the region.

A WINTER PARADISE Thanks the close proximity to Lake Superior, Bayfield gets hit heavy with lake effect snow. The silent sports season is long... often starting in November, and it's not uncommon to continue skiing well into April. Great snow pairs nicely with great trails–it's easy to see why many visitors prefer Bayfield's quiet winter wonders.

Our 'Little Hill' overlooking the 'Big Lake' has a great and storied history. With roots dating to the 1940s (or earlier, depending on whom you ask), we're proud of the fun and activity he hill has brought to the local community. 18 | bayfield, wisconsin

Breathe the fresh, crisp winter air and take it all in. The winter beauty of the mature forests is stunning. For Nordic enthusiasts, the trail systems cover 40 km of classic and skate skiing trails that are groomed and tracked regularly. The combination of spacious hardwood, hemlock and pine forests, and plentiful lake effect snow provided by Lake Superior makes for a premier Nordic ski experience. For those who really want to embrace a northwoods winter experience, try a nighttime ski session. The Classic and skate Nordic trails at Mt. Ashwabay are open 24/7 so you can hit the trails day or night–just bring your skis, headlamp, and a few friends for this incredibly fun adventure. The quiet trails inspire and connect you to nature in a beautifully unique way. The Nordic offerings are impressive, but if skiing isn’t your thing you can also take in the peace and quiet of the trails on snowshoes. The fat tire bike trails are open year-round at Mt. Ashwabay, with the winter mountain biking trails offering a challenging and fun course for getting out in the snow.

Day passes and season passes are affordable and available from Mt. Ashwavay. Ski, snowshoe and mountain bike rentals are available onsite, or from local businesses. Mt. Ashwabay is very family-friendly with a beginner area, rentals and lessons, a terrain park, food and beverage service, and a cozy chalet. Explore and enjoy great vertical drops and breathtaking views of Lake Superior from Mt. Ashwabay.

A special place where people connect with nature. The natural beauty of Bayfield is yours to explore! Discover the sea caves. Do some boutique-style shopping. Relax on the deck and take in the Lake Superior views. Just like Bayfield has something beautiful to see in every season, there's also plenty to do in every season. There's something special about this city––the Bayfield experience stays with you. And when you return, it'll feel like the welcoming home of an old friend. Experience the natural beauty with adventure. Paddle the Apostle Islands, ride fat bikes in the fresh lake effect snow, sail Lake Superior, or mush a team of dog sleds. Or, just take a deep breath and relax on a cruise around the islands. Stroll down historic Rittenhouse Avenue in downtown Bayfield. You'll soon notice that every shop is truly unique. No chain stores, just real businesses in a thriving downtown. Pick up gear for your next kayaking trip, or make a dent in your holiday shopping list. Pick up smoked Lake Superior whitefish to pair with your local wine as you sip and watch the sunset. Hop in the car for an afternoon visiting the orchards and fruit farms along the Bayfield Fruit Loop. Find out what's in season and pick your own or buy pre-picked. If you're lucky enough to visit in the fall, you'll experience the changing leaves overlooking Lake Superior as you pick apples. Bayfield has a long history with the arts. The inspiring beauty of Lake Superior and the picturesque city of Bayfield have drawn artists from across the country. Visit the many studios and galleries in and around Bayfield; many invite visitors to watch them at work. Build your Bayfield experience and become part of life here next to the water.

From Ashland, go south on State Highway 112/Sanborn Avenue, follow for about 9 miles. Go straight onto County Highway E, about 1.5 miles past the town of Sanborn. Turn left onto Ashland-Bayfield Road, and go south 4 miles. The parking area and trailhead will be on the left. The falls itself is an elegant cascade, diagonally traversing a 70 foot granite face. In the winter only a trickle of a stream flows through the frozen falls. For a quick scenic snowshoe jaunt, Morgan Falls is a good choice.
