SEPTEMBER 7-15, 2024

Welcome to ART ESCAPE

A vibrant, growing arts community makes its home on the Bayfield Peninsula. The natural beauty of Lake Superior and the Apostle Islands provide constant inspiration to dozens of artists calling Wisconsin’s northernmost tip home.

The Bayfield Chamber and Visitor Bureau invites you to immerse yourself in Bayfield County and Madeline Island’s rich arts culture from September 7-15, 2024. The third annual Art Escape is a nine-day celebration featuring area artists, workshops, open houses, and demonstrations.

Bayfield’s 61st annual Festival of Arts kicks off the week’s events. Art vendors will line the shores of Lake Superior in Memorial Park, the heart of beautiful Bayfield. The festival showcases regional and national artists. A true family event, there will be hands-on activities for kids at the festival and all week long at galleries and studios across the peninsula and on Madeline Island.

Drive around the Bayfield peninsula and visit the many galleries along Lake Superior’s South Shore and Chequamegon Bay. Be sure to stop at the Cornucopia Art Crawl the opening weekend of Art Escape. Hop on the Madeline Island Ferry to Madeline Island and enjoy open houses and demonstrations at art galleries in the town of La Pointe all week long.

Art Escape is an opportunity to experience the wonderful arts scene in Wisconsin’s premier peninsula. The robust arts community here enriches our communities, and we are delighted to share this extraordinary wealth. Thank you to all the area artists for making the third annual Art Escape a success! You won’t find a better escape in Wisconsin.

FINDING ONE’S WAY IN CLAY

My role as a potter and gallery owner is to connect, inspire, and give moments of wellbeing and nourishment to the user. I saw this happen while growing up. When mom invited friends and artists to our table, I watched her fill a ceramic plate with home cooked food, a pottery cup with wine, and the room filled with conversation and joy and satiation.

During the first twenty years of my career, I worked on building an identity in clay. I watched and read everything I could about making and selling pots. I copied what I saw, and experimented with making, glazing, and firing. My dad taught me that finding one’s way with clay, turns and twists you through many failures and successes. The goal is not the masterpiece, rather, the process becomes the masterpiece. It’s the journey and the multitude of works that reveal your artistic voice.

When I was invited to show my work at NCECA (National Conference on the Education of Ceramic Arts) in 1995 this moment happened to me. I stained porcelain clay plates with rutile and then drew animal images. My print making background influenced the way I etched sgraffito lines into the clay and then glazed. When the pots came out of the kiln, I realized for the first time that here was something of my own! No one was doing this kind of surface design. These pots were sold at NCECA, and I received orders for more.

In the second 25 years, my husband, Pete joined me in my studio. Pete creates the traditional ECKELS POTTERY functional ware. He throws and glazes his pots with the same recipes my dad

created in the 1960’s to keep our heritage alive. Working in stoneware and porcelain, Pete also explores figurative painting with underglazes on the pottery surfaces, and surface carving on his own work. Together, we collaborate on many pieces of work using each other’s skills to fulfill the vision of a piece. We now rely on technology like software and on-line resources and pottery groups, but my roots remain firmly planted in what came before me, my family of artists and potters.

Eckels Pottery and Fine Craft Gallery now supports 30 artists as well as myself and my husband Pete and apprentice, Sara Beadle. We teach classes to couples and small groups. We are 64 years here making pots and the oldest operating studio pottery in Wisconsin.

Our current interests have been learning to fire with “soda” creating an atmosphere effect on our pottery. For the past two winters we have been making pots at the Don Reitz Ceramic Cent Ranch, in Clarkdale, AZ, using the soda kiln available there. The experience has allowed us to explore this glazing technique -stop into ECKELS POTTERY to see our latest work!

For another perspective, visit our home page, eckelspottery.com and see the video link: WDIO “The Lift” Show, “In good hands: Shaping the legacy of Eckels Pottery”.

MICHELE AUGER, TURTLE TRACKS STUDIO

Michele Auger has lived, worked, played and created art on Madeline Island year round for 44 years. The island has offered endless inspiration for her work. Painted paper collage weaves together my passion for texture, color, patterns, and whimsy.

Auger is a professional weaver creating wall hangings, shawls, scarves, pillows, runners, all sizes and types of rugs, both rag and wool. Over the years, Auger longed for another medium so she started to paint. Watercolor was her first introduction, but soon needed more.

After years of instruction and not getting the results she wanted, Auger took a class at the Madeline Island School of the Arts on painted paper collage knew she found her medium. Now, Auger spends her creative time doing both weaving and collaging. They each give her a different kind of joy.

AUSTIN MILLER STUDIO

My loft gallery (established 1988) overlooks Lake Superior near where I was born. Superior’s south shore is a real stunner for beauty throughout all four (unpredictable!) seasons. That’s heady stuff for a painter.

Watercolor is my life long medium because of its fickle nature. It begs to be unleashed, set free to flow at will and inter mingle its jewel-like pigments. A fine watercolor with its sparkling light and serendipity brings great joy to a painter, and hopefully to the viewer as well.

Stop by during Art Escape 10-4 Wednesday thru Saturday, chose a free art card and enter to win a framed giclee’ “Sundown at Memorial Park” pictured above.

Looking forward to hosting two demonstrations at my studio, 33615 Ski Hill Rd, Bayfield, WI (I’m on the hotspot, you can relax!):

Wednesday 9/11, 2PM (watercolor) Thursday 9/12, 2PM (silk)
