To the 61st annual BAYFIELD FESTIVAL OF ARTS AND ART ESCAPE
The Bayfield Festival of Arts is kicking off 9-days of “all things art” across Bayfield County and Madeline Island called Art Escape (Sept. 7-15)! This event is an initiative organized by the Bayfield Chamber and Visitor Bureau to help visitors get in touch with their creative side and experience the area’s vibrant arts community. You can also enter a drawing to win locally made art at any participating gallery or at the Bayfield Chamber and Visitor Bureau September 7-15!
On September 7-8, exceptional local and regional artists will be featured in Memorial
Park in downtown Bayfield. Visitors can anticipate a unique selection of pottery, painting, jewelry, sculpture, glass works, wood carvings, and more.
Three awards will be given out to artists for “Best in Show,” “Best Artwork Inspired by Lake Superior” and “Award of Excellence Judged by Peers.” The results will be posted at the Memorial Park Gazebo on Sunday. They are judged based on creativity, craftsmanship and display.
This year’s awards are birch bark medallions with the Lake Superior design cut out with bark wrapped with sweet grass (wiingashk) and sewed on with sinew. The medallions are handcrafted by Red Cliff Tribal Member, Nathan Gordon.

Lake Superior’s raw and natural beauty—the sound of waves crashing along the shoreline and agates or sea glass found buried just beneath the sand—are an obvious inspiration to many artists featured in this year’s Festival of Arts and Art Escape.
In honor of Lake Superior, the 2024 Bayfield Festival of Arts is highlighting the artists whose work is directly inspired by the Big Lake. Watch for booths with the Lake Superior symbol to find artwork with a tie to the greatest of the Great Lakes.
