bayfield:
where the water meets the soul The “Gateway to the Apostle Islands,” “The Berry Capital of Wisconsin,” and “The Smallest City in Wisconsin” are all accolades Bayfield has earned. With a year round population hovering around 500 people, Bayfield still holds the title as one of the smallest cities in the state.
T
here are at least a dozen more merits this quaint town on Wisconsin’s Northern most tip has to its name, but these titles are not often referenced by the folks who live here. If you ask they will let you in on some local secrets, such as where to get the best whitefish livers or the best spot to see the northern lights. As you drive north to Bayfield along National Scenic Byway, Highway 13, you’ll twist along the Gitchigami shoreline and rolling hills before it plateaus into the city limits. As you slow down, be sure to howl at the giant wolf (Ma’iingan in Ojibwe) at Howl Adventure Center and grab a homemade pie at the Gourmet Garage. When you turn the corner, you’ll be greeted by a panoramic view of Lake Superior and Madeline Island

before making your way down historic Rittenhouse Avenue. You’ll see the Old Rittenhouse Inn, the town’s first country inn and gourmet restaurant. You won’t find any box stores along the main corridor, only locally owned shops and galleries inviting you to take a piece of Bayfield home with you. A stroll through downtown reveals the brilliant work of the many artisans who call this town home and have found inspiration in the natural surroundings. At the end of Rittenhouse Avenue, you’ll find the Apostle Islands Cruises filled with visitors gripping their binoculars in anticipation of getting a closer look at the Apostle Islands. Walk along the path in Memorial Park and take in sailboats coming and going from the marina. Continue one block further north and catch the Madeline Island Ferry to see Bayfield from a new vantage point. The ferry terminal connects travelers and their vehicles from the mainland to the only currently inhabited island in the archipelago, Madeline Island. The ferry runs several times a day throughout the year whenever the channel is free enough from ice to operate. In years when the ice is thick enough to hold the weight of cars a road opens across the channel between Bayfield and La Pointe, the small town on Madeline Island, allowing residents and visitors to drive across the lake for a few short weeks in the peak of winter. Back on the mainland, the heavy lake effect snow makes the area a mecca for the active winter enthusiasts. Mt. Ashwabay’s 40 kilometers of pristine Nordic ski trails make it the perfect winter destination. Cozy lodging facilities make a splendid home base for quiet winter enthusiasts who prefer to curl up next to the fire with a book from Honest Dog Books or the Apostle Islands Booksellers. While some may feel the winters are long, we see it as more opportunities to ski and snowshoe miles of forested trails, or explore via snowmobile across Bayfield County. In spring when the ground starts to thaw, you’ll find Bayfield’s farmers and orchardists tending to their crop. With a climate tempered by its proximity to the greatest of the great lakes and protected by rolling hills, Bayfield is famous for its fruit production; a rarity in such a northern latitude. Just two miles from downtown Bayfield, you’ll discover the “Fruit Loop,” where growers produce some of the largest crops of blueberries, raspberries and strawberries in the Midwest. You can’t find Bayfield fruits in your metropolitan grocery store; it stays local to make your favorite homestyle pie, cider, jelly, jam, or craft drink of choice. In the fall, stop by Erickson’s Orchards and pick up a dozen of the famous apple cider donuts and pick your own apples. Head to Bayfield Wineries and Blue Ox Cider to taste the fermented fruits in your favorite wine or cider. See the view of Lake Superior at Hauser’s Superior View Farm from the top of the historic 1928 SEARS mail-order barn. While you’re there, pick up a bottle of hard cider from Apfelhaus Cidery. Lake Superior’s unmatched beauty is what keeps people coming back to experience all of what Bayfield has to offer. Come often and stay long. Explore Bayfield and the Apostle Islands for yourself. Start planning your adventure today.

Eckels Pottery and Fine Craft Gallery
arts
From painters, jewelers, potters, sculptors to woodworkers and performers, Bayfield’s high quality art scene is worth celebrating. Join us in Bayfield on September 10 and 11, 2022 for the annual Festival of the Arts and Gallery Tour. The event kicks off Art Escape, a nine-day celebration of "all things art" across Bayfield County and Madeline Island. Experience the arts through demonstrations, open houses, and create your own masterpiece through a class. Come see why so many are inspired by the natural beauty of Lake Superior and create your own Art Escape during this week long art extravaganza. The fresh scenery Lake Superior provides has allowed the Bayfield Peninsula to become a hub for artisans near and far. It’s why Bayfield is home to the oldest pottery in Wisconsin, Eckels Pottery and Fine Craft 10 | bayfield, wisconsin
Gallery. It was first known as the ‘Pot Shop’ when Bob Eckels opened the doors in 1960. He took on apprentices, started the art department at Northland College in Ashland, helped start Bayfield Artist Guild and tri-state Art Fair while promoting many local artists. Now, his daughter Dede is carrying on her father’s legacy by making functional and one of a kind handmade pottery with her husband Pete. The studio is open for visitors to watch the pottery process and features at least 30 local and regional artists in the gallery. Lissa Flemming of Silverwaves Jewelry opened her jewelry gallery along historic Rittenhouse Avenue in Downtown Bayfield in 2016. In 2021 she moved to a much bigger location along Bayfield’s Main Corridor, with even bigger plans. Now, she’s hosting jewelry making classes for the community in her new Workshop 46.8° N with the goal of building the arts community by offering classes and connecting with other artists and local businesses near and far. If you are an artist interested in teaching a class, please contact Lissa Flemming at info@silverwaves.net. 40 S 2ND STREET #105 BAYFIELD, WI
culture
Gaa-Miskwaabikaang
Three miles north of Bayfield the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa will welcome you to Miskwaabekong (Red Cliff). It’s known for its red cliffs along the shores of Gitchigami (Lake Superior) and as a fishing community. A stop at the Red Cliff Fish Company will show you why. Their variety of the fresh fish such as whitefish, lake trout, walleye and lake herring all caught in Lake Superior will give you a taste.
Take a hike through the Frog Bay Tribal National Park, the first tribal national park in the United States. The rare boreal forest ecotype, coastal wetlands and underdeveloped sand beach is an unequaled wilderness experience on the Bayfield Peninsula. You can see five of the Apostle Islands from the park, Oak Island, Hermit Island, Stockton Island, Bear Island, and Michigan Island. The 1.7 mile rustic trail system, interpretive signs and bridges will leave you feeling
more connected with nature and the Red Cliff community.
Be immersed in Anishinaabe culture the first weekend of July at the Red Cliff Annual Pow Wow. The celebration is free, and open to the public and features educational cultural demonstrations and booths, singing and dancing, canoe races and dinghy races, and traditional games such as the moccasin game. Stay right where all the action is at Legendary Waters Resort and Casino, and be sure to try a locally distilled cocktail at Copper Crow Distillery, the first Native American owned distillery in the United States. ADVENTURE AT
WINTER PARADISE
Thanks to the close proximity to Lake Superior, Bayfield gets hit heavy with lake effect snow. The silent sports season is long... often starting in November, and it's not uncommon to continue skiing well into April. Great snow pairs nicely with great trails–it's easy to see why many visitors prefer Bayfield's quiet winter wonders. Breathe the fresh, crisp winter air and take it all in. The winter beauty of the mature forests is stunning. For Nordic enthusiasts, the trail systems cover 40 km of classic and skate skiing trails that are groomed and tracked regularly. The combination of spacious hardwood, hemlock and pine forests, and plentiful lake effect snow provided by Lake Superior makes for a premier Nordic ski experience. For those who really want to embrace a northwoods winter experience, try a nighttime ski session. The Classic and skate Nordic trails at Mt. Ashwabay are open 24/7 so you can hit the trails day or night–just bring your skis, headlamp, and a few friends for this incredibly fun adventure. The quiet trails inspire and connect you to nature in a beautifully unique way. The Nordic offerings are impressive, but if skiing isn’t your thing you can also take in the peace and quiet of the trails on snowshoes. The fat tire bike trails are open year-round at Mt. Ashwabay, with the winter mountain biking trails offering a challenging and fun course for getting out in the snow. Day passes and season passes are affordable and available from Mt. Ashwavay. Ski, snowshoe and mountain bike rentals are available onsite, or from local businesses. Mt. Ashwabay is very familyfriendly with a beginner area, rentals and lessons, a terrain park, food and beverage service, and a cozy chalet. A DAY AT THE BEACH Photo Credit: Jeff Rennicke
RESTORING SANDSCAPES Written by Jeff Rennicke, Executive Director of Friends of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore
“Shhhhhhhhhh ….” Next to the drumbeat of the waves, it is the music of the wind dancing in the beach grass that is the quintessential sound along the beaches of the Apostle Islands. Waving and swirling, the grasses of a sandscape are the dance of the lake breezes. And, they are also a delicate, fragile, and all-too-often disturbed ecosystem. Recently, a cadre of volunteers from Friends of the Apostle Islands assisted the National Park Service with restoration work on the sandscapes of Raspberry Island and Little Sand Bay in an effort to protect these beautiful and important places for visitors and wildlife alike.
“The Apostle Islands National Lakeshore has the highest quality and most diverse collection of sandscapes in the Great Lakes,” says Julie Van Stappen of the National Park Service. “These sandscapes are dynamic, vital for several species of wildlife and breeding birds, and very popular with visitors.” Sometimes, too popular. Beach grasses have very shallow roots and often grow in easily disturbed soil. Compaction

from too much foot traffic can kill the plants. To combat the resulting erosion, the park has been doing sandscape restoration using a combination of floating boardwalks to direct visitor traffic and volunteer efforts to restore and replenish the fragile beach grasses in eroded areas. In late summer, seeds and plant materials were gathered from healthy park sandscapes and grown over the winter by a greenhouse that specializes in native plants. In spring, trays and trays of the healthy plants were transported back to the park where a team of NPS staff and Friends volunteers replanted 4,000 plugs of beach grass (Ammophila breviligulata) and hairgrass (Deschampsia flexuosa) on damaged
“We all enjoy the beaches and sandscapes of the Apostles,” says Jill Rennicke, Co-Director of Friends of the Apostle Islands and the Volunteer Coordinator for this event. “By working with the National Park Service, our volunteers can help ensure that they will be healthy and beautiful for all of us, and the wildlife of the park for years to come.” The Friends of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore is a non-profit dedicated to the support and protection of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. INCREDIBLE VIEWS & ISLAND VIBES Madeline Island, the largest of the Apostle Islands and the only one not included in the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, is 2.5 miles across the channel from Bayfield, just a 20 minute ferry ride away. In spring, summer, and fall it is accessible via the Madeline Island Ferry Line or private watercraft. In the wintertime, when the lake is frozen, visitors and locals alike use the Ice Road to drive back and forth. The Ice Road uses a similar route as the ferry, but instead of gliding over open water, travelers navigate their own vehicle over frozen Lake Superior. Upon arriving on Madeline Island, visitors are welcomed to the historic town of La Pointe, with a year-round population of about 250. Boasting shops, restaurants, lodging, and
a marina, La Pointe also features a Wisconsin Historical Society museum. Big Bay State Park and the adjacent Big Bay Town Park are not to be missed. Each park offers sand beaches, hiking trails, camping, picnicking, and incredible views of rock formations above the crystal clear Lake Superior water. (Ahem... photo opportunities!) The Anishinaabe name for Madeline Island is Mooningwanekaaning, which means Home of the Golden Breasted Woodpecker. The island is rich in culture and tradition and is the spiritual center of the Lake Superior Chippewa, the Anishinaabe people. Public signage on Madeline Island is bilingual, with place names written in both English and Anishinaabe. 2022 travel guide | 21

CELEBRATE Join us for the 60th Anniversary of Bayfield Apple Festival on October 7–9, 2022!
Coined as one of “Wisconsin’s Best Festivals” by Wisconsin Trails Magazine, this three day event is a celebration of Bayfield’s rich agricultural heritage. Visit more than a dozen apple orchards and berry farms just two miles from downtown Bayfield. Pick your own apples, grab a gallon of freshly pressed apple cider, or pick up a warm apple pie made with local ingredients. Downtown Bayfield offers a number of food and craft vendors, two live music venues, an apple peeling contest, and the Grand Parade on Sunday to round out the weekend's activities. Visit bayfield.org for more information about the festival.
