bayfield: where the water meets the soul

6 | bayfield, wisconsin

The “Gateway to the Apostle Islands,” “The Berry Capital of Wisconsin,” and “The Smallest City in Wisconsin” are all accolades Bayfield has earned. With a year-round population hovering around 500 people, Bayfield is the smallest city in the state.

Conde Nast Traveler named Bayfield as one of the “The Best Places to Go in the U.S in 2023” and we couldn’t agree more. The unspoiled beauty of Lake Superior and the Apostle Islands makes this small fishing city the perfect place for your next outdoor adventure.

The adventure begins as you drive north to Bayfield along National Scenic Byway, Highway 13 twisting along the Gitchigami shoreline and rolling hills before it plateaus into the city limits. As you slow down, be sure to say hi or howl at the giant Wolf (Ma’iingan in Ojibwe) at Howl Adventure Center and grab a beer from Adventure Club Brewing.

When you turn the corner, you’ll be welcomed with a panoramic view of Lake Superior and Madeline Island before making your way down historic Rittenhouse Avenue. You’ll see the Old Rittenhouse Inn, the town’s first country inn and gourmet restaurant. You won’t find any box stores along the main corridor, only locallyowned shops and galleries inviting you to take a piece of Bayfield home with you. A stroll downtown reveals the brilliant work of the many artisans who call this town home and have found inspiration in the natural surroundings.

At the end of Rittenhouse Avenue, you’ll find the Apostle Islands Cruises filled with visitors gripping their binoculars in anticipation of getting a closer look at the 22 Apostle Islands. Walk along the path in Memorial Park and take in the sailboats coming and going from the marina. Walk another block north and catch the Madeline Island Ferry to see Bayfield from a new vantage point.

The ferry terminal connects travelers and their vehicles from the mainland to the only currently inhabited island in the archipelago, Madeline Island. The ferry runs several times a day throughout the year whenever the channel is free enough from ice to operate. In years when the winter ice is thick enough to hold the weight of cars, a road opens across the channel between Bayfield and La Pointe, the small town on Madeline Island, allowing residents and visitors to drive across the lake for a few short weeks in the peak of winter. A thrill in and of itself.

Back on the mainland, the heavy lake-effect snow makes the area a mecca for active winter enthusiasts. Mt. Ashwabay’s 40 kilometers of pristine Nordic ski

trails make it the perfect winter destination. Cozy lodging facilities make a splendid home base for those who prefer to curl up next to the fire with a book from Honest Dog Books or the Apostle Islands Booksellers. Our robust winter season offers plenty of opportunity to ski and snowshoe miles of forested trails, or explore the extensive Bayfield County trail system on a snowmobile.

When the ground starts to thaw in spring, you’ll find Bayfield’s farmers and orchardists tending to their crops. With a climate tempered by its proximity to the greatest of the Great Lakes and protected by rolling hills, Bayfield is famous for its fruit production; a rarity in such a northern latitude. Just two miles from downtown Bayfield, you’ll discover the “Fruit Loop,” where growers produce some of the largest crops of blueberries, raspberries, and strawberries in the Midwest. You can’t find these fruits in your metropolitan grocery store. They stay local to make your favorite homestyle pie, cider, jelly, jam, or craft drink of choice.

Just north of Bayfield is the tribal hub of the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa in GaaMiskwaabikaang (Red Cliff). The Anishanaabe (Ojibwe) first nations people have long been stewards of the region. Their native culture is being studied, showcased, and preserved everywhere you turn. Take a hike at Frog Bay, the first Tribal National Park in the United States. After your hike, quench your thirst at Copper Crow Distillery, the first Native American-owned distillery in the country. There’s always something to do in spring (ziigwan), summer (niibin), fall (dagwaagin), and winter (Biboon).

Lake Superior’s unmatched beauty is what keeps people coming back to experience all of what Bayfield has to offer. Come often and stay long. Explore Bayfield and the Apostle Islands for yourself. Start planning your adventure today.

Stop in the Bayfield Artists Guild in the heart of downtown or Eckels Pottery and Fine Craft Gallery, the oldest pottery in Wisconsin. Take a short ferry ride from Bayfield to Madeline Island and browse art collections at Woods Hall, La Pointe Center for the Arts, and Bell Street Gallery and ArtBar. Many may know Karlyn Yellowbird Gallery in Washburn, now under new ownership, with a collection of local and regional artists. The gallery also has a maker's space for area artists to do their work. Similarly, Artists Squared and Artists on the Byway Galleries in Washburn have unique collections for every taste.

Pick up an Art Loop brochure at the Bayfield Chamber and Visitor Bureau and take yourself on your own artistic journey. All of the galleries mentioned as well as a dozen more are featured in the brochure. You can also call the chamber to request the Art Loop Brochure.

CELEBRATING 75 YEARS!

Mt. Ashwabay Outdoor Recreation Area is celebrating its 75th anniversary in 2023 with many opportunities to get outdoors and enjoy the beauty of Lake Superior’s south shore year-round. kilometers of mountain biking trails, Nordic ski trails, snowshoe trails, and downhill skiing options will keep you and your family busy during your visit. Its accessibility to trails and proximity to Bayfield (3 miles south of the city) make it a favorite place for locals and visitors alike.

“I’ve skied at Mt. Ashwabay since I was eight years old; grew up, moved away, had kids, came back and started skiing out there with my kids,” said Jim Bratley. Bratley played an instrumental role in forming the non-profit organization that ensures the ski hill remains a viable community asset. After all, its name is a combination of the surrounding towns: Ash (Ashland) Wa (Washburn) Bay (Bayfield).

“The sense of community there and the fact that my parents could be around or drop us off and know that we would be cared for by anyone that was at the hill was super special,” said Lucia Damberg, who grew up skiing with friends and family at Mt. Ashwabay. Damberg skied competitively throughout high school and now works at Big Sky Resort in Montana.

Bratley said Mt. Ashwabay has been key to many ski-related careers. “We’ve been quite a feed source for the big hills [in other states] for instructors, groomers, you name it,” Bratley said. The Mt. Ashwabay trail system covers 40 km of classic and skate skiing trails that are groomed and tracked regularly. The stunning winter beauty of the mature forest ensure these trails are some of the best you’ll find in Wisconsin.

Day passes and season passes are affordable and available from Mt. Ashwabay. Ski and snowshoe rentals are available on-site or from local businesses. (Check out Howl Adventure Center or Sweet Sailing for rentals.) Mt. Ashwabay is a family-friendly destination with a beginner area, seasonal clinics, food and beverage service, and a cozy chalet.

For the 75th Anniversary, there will be more to see and do all year long. Ski, hike, or bike to the top of the ski hill, take a picture of the view or a selfie with a friend, count the stars on a clear night, or grab a bite to eat at the chalet. These are just a few suggestions for 75 plus things to do at Mt. Ashwabay.

"We're all here for the love of the sport and we're all going to work together to make it a better space," said Lucia.

ACCESS FOR ALL

Tracy Tabaka looks out at Lake Superior. There, just beyond the Meyers Beach parking area, lie the Apostle Islands and the famous sea caves. She smiles, thinking of the freedom of a paddle in her hand, the wind in her face. She has been dreaming of this for years.

But that smile fades as she looks at the barrier before her – 45 steps tumbling down a 23-foot bank to the launching area below – and then at her wheelchair.

National Parks belong to all of us. Yet, for the one in four adults (61 million Americans) who according to the Centers for Disease Control have a disability that impacts their major life activities, obstacles like stairs can spell the difference between the trip of a lifetime and a lifetime of being left out.

“When I pick up a paddle, I am no more disabled than anyone else,” Tracy Tabaka says. “The only real difficulty is all those stairs.”

The National Park Service, with the support of Friends of the Apostle Islands is looking to change that through the Access for All initiative. “I am thrilled to be collaborating with Friends on their Access for All initiative,” says park superintendent Lynne Dominy. “The program integrates ways for all park visitors to overcome personal challenges to mobility, to vision or hearing, and to learning with the goal of removing barriers to accessing and experiencing the wonders of Apostle Islands National Lakeshore.”

tactile features on interpretive signs. Friends recently cut the ribbon on a new $60,000 accessible amphitheater for ranger talks on Stockton Island and debuted a website given an AA-rating for accessibility. But barriers remain including those 45 steps at Meyers Beach which Friends and the National Park Service hope to replace with a 520foot accessible ramp and scenic overlook as the keystone project of Access for All making paddling the sea caves more accessible.

“Trips like this kept me from giving up when I learned of my progressive neurological disorder,” says Annie Hickman. “They can be lifechanging, proving that I can still do the things I love and completely restorative even though I am a puddle when I am done.”

Nothing can’t guarantee you won’t be a “puddle” too after an Apostle Islands adventure but through supporting Access for All we can be sure that everyone has the opportunity to try.

For information on how you can support the Access for All initiative, visit friendsoftheapostleislands.org or call 715-449-6900.

For Adventure Seekers

a first-timer s itinerary 

Packed with adventure and activity. This three-day itinerary includes can't-miss stops for your first trip to iconic Bayfield and the Apostle Islands.

Caffeine up! Start your day with a coffee from Wonderstate Coffee Bayfield. You'll need plenty of fuel for the rest of your adventure. Rent a bike and hop on the Madeline Island Ferry Line. Ride to Big Bay State Park or Big Bay Town Park (about 6 miles) for panoramic Lake Superior views and a taste of island life.

Learn about the area you're exploring. Check out the Madeline Island Museum in La Pointe, the Bayfield Heritage Center, or the Bayfield Maritime Museum for an engaging history of this beautiful area.

Find a way to visit the 22 Apostle Islands and explore sea caves. Book a sightseeing tour with Apostle Islands Cruises, a half-day or full-day guided kayak trip, or sailing adventure.

A visit to the orchards and fruit farms is a must-do! Drive the scenic Bayfield Fruit Loop. Pick your own or buy prepicked cherries, berries, or apples. Great shopping and excellent bakery products along the way.

It's been a busy day. Slow down and enjoy some music. Catch a show at Lake Superior Big Top Chautauqua––featuring international headliners or regional talent. Join us for Concerts by the Lake every Tuesday and Thursday in Memorial Park during the summer.

Hike the Lakeshore Trail from Meyers Beach, which offers sweeping views of the mainland sea caves on this moderately difficult hike. If you have children in tow, try Houghton Falls or Lost Creek Falls for beautiful, yet easier hikes.

Find a good spot on the beach to take in the afternoon on the water. Reflect on your trip as you gaze at the horizon over Lake Superior. Try Little Sand Bay, Bayview Park, or Cornucopia for a nice sandy spot.

Make your way to Copper Crow Distillery for an artisanal drink. Adventure Club Brewing is a fun microbrewery with great beer if that's more your thing, or try one of the area wineries or cideries –whatever fits your taste!

INCREDIBLE VIEWS & ISLAND VIBES

Madeline Island is the largest of the Apostle Islands and the only one not included in the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. A 20-minute ride on the Madeline Island ferry will get you, and your mode of transportation safely to the island.

Upon arriving on Madeline Island, visitors are welcomed to the historic town of La Pointe. Boasting shops, restaurants, art galleries, lodging, and a marina, La Pointe also features a Wisconsin Historical Society Museum.

Big Bay State Park and the adjacent Big Bay Town Park are not to be missed. Each park offers sand beaches, hiking trails, camping, picnicking, and incredible views of rock formations above the crystal-clear Lake Superior water. (Ahem... photo opportunities!)

The Anishinaabe name for Madeline Island is Mooningwanekaaning, which means Home of the Golden

Breasted Woodpecker. The island is rich in culture and tradition and is the spiritual center of the Lake Superior Chippewa, the Anishinaabe people. Public signage on Madeline Island is bilingual, with place names written in both English and Anishinaabe.

In the wintertime, the island is a frozen oasis and offers an unforgettable winter experience. When the lake is frozen, visitors and locals alike use the ice road to drive back and forth. The ice road uses a similar route as the ferry, but instead of gliding over open water, travelers navigate their own vehicle over frozen Lake Superior. Walk along the frozen shoreline to view ice formations and listen to the chimes of ice as it moves with the waves.

Pick up a Madeline Island Visitor Guide at the Bayfield Chamber and Visitor Bureau before you head out on your island adventure.

TRADITIONS AS DEEP AS LAKE SUPERIOR

Eat at any restaurant in the Bayfield area and you’ll find a fish dish on the menu. From award-winning fish frys and spreads to pickled herring, and whitefish livers, Bayfield knows how to catch and prepare the day’s catch.

The port of Bayfield has a long-standing history of commercial fishing and by 1885 had more fishermen than any other Lake Superior Port. The shallow waters of the Apostle Islands in Lake Superior provide the perfect breeding ground for whitefish, trout, and herring. Nearly all the islands have been home to fish camps at some point in history.

“The Apostle Islands and the Wisconsin waters of Lake Superior have more breeding ground than the rest of Lake Superior combined,” said Bill Bodin of Bodin Fisheries. The fishing business has been in his family for four generations. Bodin Fisheries operates out of the old Otto L. Kuehn Company building on the south commercial fishing docks. Otto L. Kuehn was one of the two largest fish companies in Bayfield in the 1940s.

“Fishing in this area is a traditional way of life for Native Americans…for most of these fishermen it’s generation, to generation, to generation who fish and have been supplying the community here,” said Daniel Grooms of the Red Cliff Fish Company. The Red Cliff Fish Company, established in 2020, is the newest commercial wholesale fish house in the area. You’ll find fresh Lake Superior fish in most regional restaurants and grocery stores. The tribal fishery supplies whitefish to 11 reservations across Wisconsin and the Bayfield School District. You can also find Lake Superior whitefish in bigger cities like New York, Chicago and parts of Canada at wholesale markets.

If you prefer to get out on the lake and catch your own, book a fishing tour with an experienced fishing guide such as Willigans Adventures or Beyond the Catch Guide Service. For a uniquely Bayfield experience, watch the sunrise and catch a glimpse of the fishing boats heading towards the Apostle Islands. In the afternoon, you’ll see the boats come back to port to unload the day's catch. Learn more about the area’s rich fishing history by visiting the Bayfield Maritime Museum and the Bayfield Heritage Association. You can find more information about the museums on page 38.

EXPERIENCE

There’s something to do in every season

Discover the sea caves. Do some boutique-style shopping. Relax on the deck and take in the Lake Superior views. Just like Bayfield has something beautiful to see in every season, there's also plenty to do in every season. The Bayfield experience stays with you, and when you return, it'll feel like the welcoming home of an old friend.

Experience the natural beauty with adventure. Paddle the Apostle Islands, ski in the fresh lake effect snow, sail Lake Superior and visit the orchards and fruit farms along the Bayfield Fruit Loop. Or, just take a deep breath and relax on a cruise around the islands.

Stroll down historic Rittenhouse Avenue in downtown Bayfield. You'll soon notice that every shop is truly unique. No chain stores, just real businesses in a thriving downtown. Pick up gear for your next kayaking trip, or make a dent in your holiday shopping list. Pick up smoked Lake Superior whitefish to pair with your local wine as you sip and watch the sunset.

Bayfield has a long history with the arts. The inspiring beauty of Lake Superior and the picturesque city of Bayfield has drawn artists from across the country. Visit the many studios and galleries in and around Bayfield; many invite visitors to watch them at work.

The .75 mile trail traverses some beautiful natural features before ending at the edge of Lake Superior–far above the water. The waterfall flow is seasonal. Please note that the gate in the parking area will lock automatically at the posted closing time.
