bayfield: where the water meets the soul
6 | bayfield, wisconsin
The “Gateway to the Apostle Islands,” “The Berry Capital of Wisconsin,” and “The Smallest City in Wisconsin” are all accolades Bayfield has earned. With a year-round population of 584 people, Bayfield is the smallest incorporated city in the state
The unspoiled beauty of Lake Superior and the Apostle Islands make our city the best place for fresh scenery, stays, and experiences. Along the Highway 13 National Scenic Byway you’ll find some of the finest whiskeys, the most innovative retreats and the best fall festival; all features making Bayfield one of the best small Midwestern towns in the United States, according to USA Today readers.
Your adventure begins as you drive north to Bayfield along the Gitchigami shoreline through rolling hills, before it plateaus into the city limits. As you slow down, be sure to stop by Wisconsin’s oldest pottery studio, Eckels Pottery and Fine Craft Gallery, or grab a homemade pie or turnover from the Gourmet Garage.
When you turn the corner, you’ll be welcomed with a panoramic view of Lake Superior and Madeline Island before making your way down historic Rittenhouse Avenue. You’ll find a mix of historic buildings turned into modern lounges, galleries, and accommodations. You won’t find any big box stores along the main corridor; only locally-owned shops and galleries with friendly staff inviting you to take a piece of Bayfield home with you. Stay within walking distance in modernized historic buildings, renovated vacation rentals, or boutique-style motels.
At the end of Rittenhouse Avenue is your chance to get on the water with the Apostle Island Cruise Service. The narrated tour boats are filled with visitors gripping their binoculars in anticipation of getting a closer look at eagles flying overhead and sea caves carved along the shorelines of the 22 Apostle Islands.
Walk along the path in Memorial Park and take in the sailboats and fishing boats coming and going from the marina. Walk another block north and catch the Madeline Island ferry to see Bayfield from a new vantage point.
The ferry terminal connects travelers and their vehicles from the mainland to Madeline Island, the only currently inhabited island in the archipelago. The ferry runs several times a day throughout the year whenever the channel is free enough from ice to operate.
Back on the mainland in the winter, the heavy lakeeffect snow makes the area a mecca for active outdoor enthusiasts. Mt. Ashwabay’s 40 kilometers of pristine
Nordic ski trails make it the perfect winter destination. Cozy lodging facilities are a splendid home base for those who prefer to curl up next to the fire with a book from Honest Dog Books or Apostle Islands Booksellers. Our robust winter season offers plenty of opportunity to ski and snowshoe miles of forested trails or explore the extensive Bayfield County trail system on a snowmobile.
When the ground starts to thaw in spring, you’ll find Bayfield’s farmers and orchardists tending to their crops. With a climate tempered by its proximity to the greatest of the Great Lakes and protected by rolling hills, Bayfield is famous for its fruit production; a rarity in such a northern latitude. Known as the “Berry Capital of Wisconsin,” you’ll find Bayfield cherries, blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, and currants. You can pick up a pint or more or pick your own at farms along the “Fruit Loop,” located just two miles from downtown Bayfield. These fruits can be found in various dishes and drinks around Bayfield, in your favorite homestyle pie, cider, jelly, jam, or craft drink of choice. Also in the “Fruit Loop” are a dozen apple orchards, which are celebrated every fall during Apple Festival. Join us the first full weekend of October to enjoy uniquely Bayfield apple creations and entertainment.
Just north of Bayfield is the tribal hub of the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa in GaaMiskwaabikaang (Red Cliff). The Anishanaabe (Ojibwe) First Nations people have long been stewards of the region. Their native culture is being studied, showcased, and preserved everywhere you turn. Take a hike at Frog Bay, the first Tribal National Park in the United States. After your hike, quench your thirst at Copper Crow Distillery, the first indigenous-owned distillery in the country. There’s always something to do in spring (ziigwan), summer (niibin), fall (dagwaagin), and winter (biboon).
Lake Superior’s unmatched beauty is what keeps people coming back to experience all of what Bayfield has to offer. Come often and stay long. Explore Bayfield and the Apostle Islands for yourself. Start planning your adventure today.

From painters, jewelers, potters, and sculptors to woodworkers and performers, Bayfield’s highquality art scene is worth celebrating. Join us in Bayfield
September 7-15, 2024 for the third annual Art Escape, a nine-day celebration of all things art across Bayfield County and Madeline Island. Experience the arts through demonstrations and open houses or create your own masterpiece by participating in a workshop. Come see why so many are inspired by the natural beauty of Lake Superior and create your own Art Escape during this art extravaganza!
Kicking off the week is the 61st Annual Festival of Arts
September 7-8 in downtown Bayfield’s Memorial Park. The festival is a long-standing tradition, drawing exemplary artists to Bayfield. Peruse the works of local and regional artists, as well as artists from around the country while strolling along the shores of Lake Superior. There are also opportunities for children to create a work of art at the two-day festival.
The Bayfield Peninsula is a hub for artisans near and far, inspired by Lake Superior’s beauty. To that end, the area is filled with galleries
featuring the work of local artists. In Bayfield, stop in at the Bell Street Gallery - Bayfield, an extension of Bell Street Gallery and ArtBar on Madeline Island. The Bayfield gallery features fine art and gifts created by artists in the Midwest who hold Lake Superior close to their hearts. Two blocks up on Rittenhouse Avenue, immerse yourself in a rich cultural journey by visiting Bayfield’s newest gallery, Rabbit, Bird and Bear Fine Art & Gifts. The gallery highlights original art created by indigenous and BIPOC artists.
In Washburn, savor a refreshing beer as you explore the dynamic array of local and regional artworks showcased in the ever-evolving collection at Ghost Ship Gallery. Gallery owners frequently organize special events, providing opportunities to connect with resident artists who utilize studio space within the shop. Likewise, in Washburn, Artists Squared Gallery boasts a distinctive fine art collection catering to a variety of preferences.
Take a drive up to Cornucopia, where you’ll find Hestekin Pottery near the marina. Evan Hestekin’s functional stoneware and porcelain pottery are one-of-a-kind. The small communities of Cornucopia and Herbster celebrate area artists every year during the Cornucopia Art Crawl in September and the Herbster Studio Art Tour every August. (See the calendar in the front of this book for dates).
To find out more about regional artists, pick up an Art Loop brochure at the Bayfield Chamber and Visitor Bureau and take yourself on your own artistic journey. All of the galleries mentioned, as well as a dozen more, are featured in the brochure. You can also call the chamber to request the Art Loop brochure or visit our website, bayfield.org.

cultureGaa-Miskwaabikaang
The Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa welcomes you to Gaa-Miskwaabikaang (Red Cliff). The area is known for its red cliffs along the shores of Gitchigami (Lake Superior) and as a fishing community. A stop at the Red Cliff Fish Company will show you why. Their variety of fresh fish such as whitefish, lake trout, walleye and lake herring all caught in Lake Superior will give you a taste of the area’s rich culture.
Stay right where all the action is at Legendary Waters Resort and Casino where every room has a view of Lake Superior. Be sure to try a locally distilled cocktail at Copper Crow Distillery, the first Indigenous distiller in North America to craft 10 different awardwinning spirits. All liquors are produced in a zero-waste facility and are made from a cheese byproduct called whey.
Take a hike through the Frog Bay Tribal National Park, the first tribal national park in the United States. The rare boreal forest ecotype, coastal wetlands, and underdeveloped sand beach are unequaled wilderness experiences on the Bayfield Peninsula. You can see five of the Apostle Islands from the park’s beach: Oak Island (Mitigominikaani-minis), Hermit Island (Eshkwegwindeg-minis),
Stockton Island (Wiisaakodewan-minis), Bear Island (Makwa-minis), and Michigan Island (Bagidaabii). The 1.7 mile rustic trail system, interpretive signs and bridges will leave you feeling more connected with nature and the Red Cliff community.
The Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa invites you to learn and experience the culture through several events throughout the year. The Red Cliff Annual Pow Wow is the first weekend in July, Red Cliff Boys & Girls Club Youth Pow Wow is held in March and Red Cliff Days over Labor Day weekend. Each of these celebrations is open to the public and features educational and cultural demonstrations and booths, singing and dancing to showcase their rich history to others who come to visit the area.
Be part of preserving the Ojibwe language and learn about Anishinaabe traditions through two different camps. Biboon Gabeshiwin (Winter Camp) features indoor and outdoor activities like storytelling, snow snake, mitten making, and food preparation in February. In the summer months, the public is invited to Anishinaabemowin Gabeshiwin (Language Camp) in July. Many activities are similar to winter camp, but with an emphasis on language learning and immersion with Anishinaabemowin/ Ojibwemowin.

SNOWY TRADITIONS START IN BAYFIELD
Bayfield is a charming town known for its picturesque winter landscapes and outdoor activities.
This small city along the Lake Superior shore receives heavy lake-effect snow, meaning beautifully groomed crosscountry and downhill ski trails. Snow season has become a time for outdoor traditions for more than one family.
“It’s really important for us to get the kids up to Mt. Ashwabay every winter. Our family has been recreating there for five generations, so it’s near and dear to our hearts,” said Kelsey Lindsey, who now resides in Washburn.
Mt. Ashwabay Ski and Recreation Area is a community ski hill and gets its name from the surrounding towns Ash (Ashland) Wa (Washburn) Bay (Bayfield). The trail system covers 40 km of classic and skate skiing trails that are groomed and tracked regularly. The stunning winter beauty of the mature forest ensures these trails are some of the best you’ll find in Wisconsin.
Another uniquely Wisconsin winter adventure is dog sledding. It’s been a mode of transportation in the wintertime for generations and continues as a traditional past time. Start your own dog sledding tradition with Wolfsong Adventures in Mushing where you get to take command of your own dog sled team.
“It was truly one of our favorite vacations, and Wolfsong Adventures in Mushing is the very best,” said LaVonne Bennett Bloem, who traveled from Iowa to try out this exhilarating snowy adventure.
Paul Buelow, from the Milwaukee area, took the gangline on a particularly chilly day in Bayfield. “The experience of driving a dog sled kept us all warm, could not be happier!” he said.
Speaking of dog sledding, did you know an honest dog is a mushing term meant to distinguish those dogs who work hard, dig in, and never give up? Continue your snowy tradition by stopping at Honest Dog Books , one of two

TREASURES OF THE NIGHT SKY
GLITTERING STARS, NORTHERN LIGHTS, THE GIFT OF BEAUTY AND WONDER CAN BE YOURS THIS SUMMER SIMPLY BY LOOKING UP
Written by Jeff Rennicke, Executive Director of Friends of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore
It begins with a faint glimmer, just a hint of brightness on the northern horizon, then builds, rising like an aria. Soon, the night sky is glowing green and red, dancing with light, shimmering like diamonds. The aurora is out. The northern lights are gleaming above the Bayfield Peninsula.
Sometimes, the greatest gifts in life are free. Take a blanket, walk barefoot onto one of Bayfield’s beaches or an Apostle Islands campsite. Lie on your back and look up. “To watch the white sail of a full moon gliding across the stars or see the brushstroke of the Milky Way or the flicker of northern lights painting the night sky is to witness one of true the wonders of the world, a gift of nature,” says Jeff Rennicke, a night sky photographer and Executive Director of Friends of the Apostle Islands.
“Artificial light pollutes the night sky for more than 80% of the world’s population,” Rennicke says. “One third of humanity cannot see the Milky Way at night due to the luminescent glow of artificial light. But here in the Bayfield area, the night sky still shimmers with beauty.”
The Apostle Islands and the Bayfield Peninsula are home to some of the darkest skies in the lower 48 states. Far from the big cities, with clear air, and miles of open horizons, this
how to: explore
the apostle islands
Discover rugged sea caves, clear water, sandy island beaches, and island forest paths.
SIGHTSEEING CRUISE:
See the most in the shortest amount of time! The outer-most islands are over 20 miles away from the mainland. This is a great, easy way to cover that distance. Enjoy an entertaining, narrated tour while you sit back and relax with your camera. (Look for these commercial services on pages 34 & 35.)

area is a mecca for night sky viewing – the Milky Way arching across the sky, the constellations spelling out wonder, falling stars punctuating it all. Summer of 2024 marks the “solar maximum” a time expected to bring some of the best northern light displays in years attracting night sky viewers from across the nation.
“Our dark skies are a gift filled with beauty and wonder,” Rennicke says, “open and available to all by simply stepping out at night and looking up.”
For more information on the night sky and to help protect our dark skies, contact Friends of the Apostle Islands at 71-449-6900 or visit their website www.friendsoftheapostleislands.org.
TIPS FOR NIGHT SKY WATCHING
• Pick a place away from city lights – a beach, a boardwalk, an open field – and scout it out in daylight to be sure it is safe.
• Download one of the many sky-watching apps such as SkySafari, StarWalk, or the NASA app to help keep you informed about the night sky.
• If you are seeking northern lights, plan your trip for a moonless period for the darkest skies.
• Plan to stay out late. The long days of summer mean skies are darkest from midnight until 3 am.
• Give your eyes time to adjust fully.
• Star watching can be done with the naked eye or by using a small telescope, a camera with a zoom lens, even binoculars to enhance the view.
• Join an organization like Friends of the Apostle Islands to help protect and raise awareness of the beauties of the night sky.
GUIDED KAYAK TOUR:
Explore at your own pace with a close-up view of the caves. Paddle through the caves in a tandem sea kayak. Half-day, full-day, or multiday excursions available. We highly recommend joining a guided trip with an experienced & trained outfitter, as Lake Superior can be unsafe. (Look for these commercial services on pages 34 & 35.)
FERRY OR WATER TAXI:
Take a water taxi for a day hiking on one of 22 islands. Madeline Island Ferry Line makes multiple trips each day to Madeline Island. As the official gateway of the Apostle Islands, Bayfield offers chartered island drop-off/pick-up, hiker day trips, and camper shuttles. (Look for these commercial services on pages 34 & 35.)
CAPTAINED SAILING TRIP:
Book an adventure! Discover hidden coves and beaches with one of Bayfield's many sailboat charters. If you're feeling brave, take the helm. You never know... you may want to sign up for sailing classes afterward. (Look for these commercial services on pages 34 & 35.)
OR, STICK TO THE MAINLAND!
The mainland unit of the park features the most popular and photographed sea caves in the Apostle Islands. Try the Lakeshore Trail to take in the sea caves from above! The trail above the caves begins at the Meyers Beach parking lot, 18 miles north of Bayfield and 5 miles east of Cornucopia, on State Hwy 13.

ISLAND TIME
Forget the clock and take off your watch and let your worries melt away as you enjoy the journey to Madeline Island aboard the Madeline Island Ferry. You can take your car, bike, camper, RV or simply walk on the ferry. This Midwest island destination is only a 20-minute ferry ride from Bayfield. Madeline Island is the largest of the Apostle Islands and the only one not included in the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore.
Upon arriving to the Island, visitors step into the historic village of La Pointe. Boasting shops, restaurants, art galleries, lodging, and a marina, the town also features a Wisconsin Historical Society Museum. The Madeline Island Museum chronicles Native American life, the fur trade and the arrival of missionaries. Step back in time with a walk down Colonel Woods Avenue, where you’ll find buildings and memorabilia reflecting life on the island in the late 19th and 20th centuries. The buildings are open Memorial Day – Labor Day.
Big Bay State Park and the adjacent Big Bay Town Park are not to be missed. Each park offers sand beaches, hiking trails, camping, picnicking, and incredible views of rock formations above the crystal-clear Lake Superior water. The Madeline Island Wilderness Preserve holds more than 2,900 acres of land with hiking, skiing, and snowshoe trails. Hike or ski the Capser
Trail in the middle of the island. The trail is approximately 2 miles round trip and an easy flat hike. The North End Trails have several longer loops that stretch between School House Road and North Shore Road. The forest’s well-drained soils are beautifully cloaked with a mixture of northern hardwoods, sugar maple, yellow birch, red oak, paper birch, and aspen.
As you explore the island, you’ll notice the Ojibwe culture all around you. The public signage on Madeline Island is bilingual, with place names written in both English and Ojibwe.
The Anishinaabe name for Madeline Island is Mooninwanekaaning-minis, which translates to Home of the Yellow Breasted Woodpecker. The island is a spiritual center of the Lake Superior Chippewa, the Anishinaabe people. According to Anishanaabe tradition, they were led to this region from the east by Gichi-Manidoo, the Great Spirit. This journey brought them to the place where food grows on water. The destination, Chequamegon Bay, was plentiful with manoomin, the good berry, or wild rice.
Pick up a Madeline Island Visitor Guide at the Bayfield Chamber and Visitor Bureau before you head out on your island adventure.

SPORT FISHING IN BAYFIELD AND THE
“Grab it! Set it! Got him!?” yells Tommy Hicks across the ice.
“The current is so strong that my bait is moving 15 feet from the hole,” said Hicks, a fishing guide and owner of Beyond the Catch Guide Service . He has four clients fishing on a balmy 35-degree late January day on the Chequamegon Bay along the south shore of Lake Superior.
It’s mid-morning and the fish are biting, but the challenge is landing the catch.
“I just caught a splake!” exclaims Hicks, “It’s a cross between a brook trout and a lake trout…they’re real good eating.”
For 11 years, Beyond the Catch has assisted visitors in achieving the catch of a lifetime on Lake Superior, specifically around the Bayfield Peninsula and the Apostle Islands. Lake trout, coho salmon, and brown trout are typically what sport anglers are after. Enthusiastic guides
like Hicks are looking forward to providing visitors with an exhilarating experience, anticipating excellent fishing opportunities in the coming years thanks to a flourishing lake herring (cisco) population.
“Baitfish numbers are really high right now, so fishing is going to be outstanding,” said Hicks, as another fish took a swipe at his line.
Fisheries experts with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources expect to see great fishing in the Apostle Islands and Lake Superior in 2024 and 2025 due to a large Lake Herring hatch in 2022. The hatch means bigger and better catches for those fishing recreationally.
“We’re in a great situation right now for commercial fishing and sport fishing because sometimes those two interests are competing, “ said Brad Ray, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Lake Superior Fisheries team supervisor. “Both sport and commercial fishermen are going to see an 18 percent increase in the lake trout quota.” This means

APOSTLE ISLANDS
there is less chance of an early lake trout harvest season closure.” Ray says the DNR closed the lake trout harvest season early in 2021.
Charter fishing around the Apostle Islands has been on the rise year over year since 2017, and 2022 had the most recorded charter fishermen since 2000 in the Apostle Islands area. The DNR reports catches among charter services are also breaking records on the number fish harvested.
“I love seeing a kid bring in a big fish or teaching them the art of sport fishing,” said Will Pennings of Willigans Adventures . Charter a boat with Willigans and you can curate your own experience fit for everyone in your group.
Pennings says they will take people to see all the Apostle Islands, drop a line in hopes of landing a trout or salmon, or drop you off on an island to go hiking or camping. “We always keep kayaks on board so people can see the sea caves up close and personal,” Pennings said.
Visitors are often awestruck by the vastness of the Apostle Islands. The Gaylord Nelson Wilderness Area encompasses eighty percent of the land area in the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore’s roughly 39,000 acres. The natural beauty is what draws people from near and far to see and explore the 22 islands year-round.
In the winter, Hicks will take people out as far as Outer Island, about 30 miles from the Bayfield Harbor. He has a Sherp to protect people from the harsh winter weather. This aquatic vehicle will keep everyone safe if there’s a run-in with thin ice.
“It’s to help keep everyone afloat out here where the currents are changing all the time,” Hicks said.
Whether in a boat, a Sherp, or casting a line off the dock, the evolving ecosystem of Lake Superior provides opportunities for adventure in one of the most beautiful places on earth.
