An understated display of old-fashioned favorites that have been chosen to accentuate the grand architecture of the inn. This garden features many varieties of hostas grouped with lilies, penstemon, primrose, phlox, and other perennials along with accents of colorful annuals. On the west side of the building is a ‘kitchen garden’ where herbs and edible flowers are grown for the chef’s use.
This garden employs a system of dry stream bed drainage and terraced beds for erosion control and planted a beautiful garden with a laundry list of native and other plants that are both beautiful and environmentally sound. The historic building, formerly known as the “Transfer Depot” (circa 1883), stood empty for many years following the default of the railroad until it was purchased by the Booth Fisheries Company. At that time, it was used as a ticket office for the excursion boats they ran out on Lake Superior and the Apostle Islands. Madeline Island Ferry Line purchased the building from them in 2006. The interior houses a four-season border mural, depicting island scenes such as Big Bay Lagoon/Beach, fall foliage and the ice road and windsled used in winter.
This traditional perennial garden has been evolving for the past 24 years. Renovations were begun in 2018 and continue at present. The Isaac Wing House was built in 1872, by Isaac Wing (1832-1907). Wing was ever willing to share his assets and wealth with the community. He donated the land for Bayfield’s cemetery, donated a portion of the Pike’s Creek fish hatchery grounds, purchased firefighting equipment for his namesake (Port Wing), donated the land for the Methodist-Episcopal parsonage, and established a scholarship fund at the Washburn High School.

The Garden Guest House garden is aptly named for its diverse combination of perennials, Knock Out rose bushes, Hosta, and colorful annuals. Landscaper Judy Pagac attends to the garden from May through October assuring an on-going display of seasonal plants, flowers and shrubs. 4

The 23 year garden showcases some of Wisconsin’s native wildflowers. The bees, birds and butterflies, our local pollinators, relish this display of ever-blooming plantings. Three Milkweed varieties are grown for the Monarch butterflies as they follow their flyway from Canada to Mexico and back. The vegetable/herb raised beds keep the family in fresh produce for five months. Nine rain barrels provide much of the water for all these plantings. The rainwater collected in four 65 gallon wine barrels along the garage is sent uphill by a solar powered pump.
THE DOBSON GARDEN
Kenny Dobson
This perennial garden features an array of flowers, retired commercial fishing boats and a pond. Walk along the paved trails and soak-in Bayfield’s rich maritime history in this meticulously kept oasis.
PLANT SALE:BROWNSTONE TRAIL HEAD
L andmark Conservancy
Stop by to enjoy the native plant garden that welcomes visitors to the main entrance of the Brownstone Trail. This garden was established in 2013 and is maintained by Landmark Conservancy staff with the help of volunteers. These native plants are adapted to local environmental conditions and provide seasonal changes in color throughout the year. They also provide habitat and food for a variety of animals including pollinators (like insects and birds). Their root systems hold soil in place and increase the soil’s capacity to hold water, reducing runoff. The popular Brownstone Trail opened in 1996 in partnership with private landowners who granted trail easements to Landmark Conservancy. It travels 2.25 miles alongside Lake Superior, connecting the City of Bayfield to Port Superior Marina near Pikes Creek. Members of Landmark’s staff will be available at this stop to answer questions, including questions about the future of the Brownstone Trail and its restoration.
PLANT SALE :10 a.m. -3 p.m. - Landmark will be partnering with Wildflower Woods, who will be hosting a native plant sale at this stop. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to Landmark. More than 40 species of native perennials will be available for sale. If you’re interested in incorporating native plants into your landscape, be sure to stop by!
This eclectic garden, inspired by European and Asian garden styles, sits on 7 city lots and has been in process for 21 years. Martha formed the outline of the garden by first clearing the land and then laying down stone paths to define the different spaces. With much attention to foliage style and color, plantings were distributed within the framework created by the paths. Visitors are welcome to enjoy the view from the porch.
The gardens surrounding Christ Episcopal Church offer a quiet environment for meditation, prayer, and reflection. We welcome all to enter, explore and experience this small lovely garden. All are welcome to enter the Chapel to see the beauty of our interior worship space.
APOSTLE ISLANDS NATIONAL LAKESHORE HQ

The Gaylord Nelson Memorial Garden sits at the entrance sign for the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore and the Gaylord Nelson Wilderness. The garden represents many of the flowering plants found in the Apostle Islands and surrounding area. Senator Nelson was the founder of Earth Day and played a key role in the establishment of the National Lakeshore. Volunteers from the lakeshore’s Friends group maintains the garden and have labeled many of the plants.
QUEEN’S VIEW BED AND BREAKFAST
This cottage-style garden includes Lake Superior views and several spectacular water features. This bed and breakfast, built in 1892, sits on the site of Fort Bayfield (constructed in 1861) and boasts towering, ancient white pines. Grass was defeated by “ring worm” 35 years ago, thus leading the home’s long-time owner, Mary Rice, to develop the exquisite gardens with meandering paths, babbling brook, plunge pool now enjoyed by bed and breakfast guests, seasonally changed flowers and plantings, beautiful, colorful vistas from any angle, and a bit of whimsy around many corners. Fun fact: William Knight, who constructed and lived in the original Knight House, also started the first commercial apple orchards in the Bayfield area. His apple trees survive to this day at Hauser’s Superior View Farm.
Please view this garden from the sidewalk only. Perennial gardens flank the walkways leading to the expansive porch of Le Chateau Boutin. Magnolia trees stand on either side of the walk near the street. Closer to the house, one will find a pair of Montauk daisies; ours appear to be sturdy green bushes until well into the fall, then bloom after most of the foliage turns yellow! To the west of the building are the fountain and pergola area, popular for weddings. To the north of the lawn is a terraced perennial garden. In the early spring, this bed is a riot of daffodils, tulips, crocus, and hyacinth. But as the season progresses, a pernicious invader comes to the fore. campanula family.
Against the backdrop of Lake Superior this three-season, 25 year-old secret garden has surprises around every corner. Terraced, with water features, and boasting an extensive collection of early season tulips and daffodils along with Spring wild flowers, the garden and grounds are open daily to the public. You do not need to be a guest of the Lodge to enjoy the beauty here. No wonder it is such a popular spot for special occasions! Feel free to explore the gardens at your leisure.

This is your chance to see a real blueberry orchard. Established 23 years ago, in the heart of Bayfield’s Orchard area. The farmer will be on hand to answer questions. These special plants were developed by the Universities of Wisconsin and Michigan. The field was carved out of second growth woodland, which is typical for this part of Wisconsin. A lot of TLC produces outstanding fruit. Modern growing methods have made this area the Fruit Capital of Wisconsin.
This is a garden that features lots of large sculptures adding an artistic dimension to the grounds. One unique item is a big pot that at one time held ingredients for making dynamite at the DuPont dynamite factory just south of Washburn. It weighs 2,000 pounds! Daffodils fill up the front of Eckels to greet visitors to Bayfield as the arrive into town during Bayfield in Bloom. Pots, sculptures and other art are interwoven with lupine and perennials that have been tended in this spot for over 40 years.
As you stroll the easy walk (1.5 miles RT), enjoy a few poems strolling through the seasons. Trailhead/parking is located 2.5 miles south of Bayfield on the east side of Hwy 13, opposite the Fish Hatchery. Explore the Salmo Trail anytime. Poems will be posted May 30–June 8.
Explore this trail all week.

Oulu Glass has a Teapot Garden which was started in 2014, in memory of Sue’s mom who passed away and collected teapots. The teapots hang and are perched among perennials. None of the teapots are for sale. Visitors are welcome to visit the “Teapot Garden.” For the kids, find all the elephants in the garden.
Gardens of Jan and Grant Wilcox
We began gardening together 50 years ago. We take pride in stock, bulbs and flowers, many given to us by family and friends since our first home. We started our Bayfield garden 16 years ago. Our gardens of annuals, perennials, climbing vegetables and flowers surround our 3.5 lot property. A wise elder once said, “It is not the green thumb that makes the garden grow, it is simply love”.
*You may park in back of our home, in our turn around or on Wilson Avenue. *

Come and see a semi formal garden around the house and the indigenously planted meadow in what was in the 1970s the high schoolers go to place for talking around a camp fire. The gravel path starts by the driveway, goes around the house and meadow and ends on Front St. (near the other side of the driveway). Signs name many of the trees, plants and flowers. The path slopes, winds and includes arched bridges. There are a few landscaping rocks that can serve as an impromptu seat.
*Please park on Lydia St. and walk to the driveway to begin the tour.
Fine Florals and Fine Art. SouthShore Botanicals and Rabbit, Bird and Bear: Fine Art & Gifts fuses native plants and native art. The property at the corner or Rittenhouse Avenue and Broad Street features raised garden beds filled with perennial plants from hydrangeas, lavender, iris, and peony. The gardens provide a pop of color along Bayfield’s historic Rittenhouse Avenue. Inside, you’ll find locally sourced fresh cut floral arrangements, fine arts and a flower bar.
Perennial Plant Talk: 11 a.m. - Join Mel Dunn outside the shop and learn all about perennial care.
The Bayfield School & Community Garden is a 2 acre space on the west hill of the Bayfield School overlooking beautiful Lake Superior. The garden is home to several raised beds, a large high tunnel that extends our northern growing season, a shed with a built-in greenhouse, pollinator gardens, a tri-bin composting system, three outdoor classrooms, and an earth oven that bakes delicious wood-fired pizzas. We grow various traditional foods & medicines that are endemic to place.
You can walk up the rainbow stairs from the main parking lot or drive up to the ball field parking lot and walk down the hill. You will see the high tunnel.
