Located on the south shore of Lake Superior, surrounded by the Chequamegon National Forest, and a gateway to the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, Bayfield is the smallest incorporated city in Wisconsin. Although our community, with a year round population of 487 and snuggled within a total area of 1 square mile, is small in size, we are big on hospitality. The combination of natural wonders, year round activities and small town charm have earned us the titles of, “Best Little Town in the Midwest” by the Chicago Tribune, “Best Trail Town in the Midwest” by Backpacker Magazine, “Best Town in Wisconsin” by Midwest Living Magazine, one of “America’s Best Coastal Small Towns” by USA Today 10Best, along with nominations to many other “Best of” lists over the years. We appreciate these accolades, but they just scratch the surface when it comes to describing all of the things that make Bayfield such a special place. The crystal clear waters of Lake Superior and the Apostle Islands call to the adventurous spirit of sailors, fishermen, kayakers, and beachcombers. A network of trails weave through the surrounding hills and verdant forests for hiking, biking, skiing, dog sledding, horseback riding, snowmobiles and ATVs. Area orchards erupt with strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, cherries and apples from spring through fall. Award winning restaurants serve locally grown produce, family farmed meats, artisanal cheese, freshly caught trout and whitefish. Distinctive shops sell locally crafted art, jewelry, clothing and much more. Our inns, cottages and B&Bs provide fluffy pillows to greet weary travelers after a long day of exploration. We work very hard at the city level to protect and preserve the historic, cultural and natural resources that attract people to Bayfield and make this a great place to visit and live. We value clean air, clean water, green space and a high quality of life. Speak with some of our residents and it won’t take long before you find someone who came for a weekend and stayed for a lifetime. We invite you to visit Bayfield and discover why this is where “The water meets the soul”.

Lake Superior, the Great Lake that drew Bayfield’s founders, remains the area’s chief attraction. Spanning the horizon are the 22 Apostle Islands, 21 of which are protected as part of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. Home to the largest collection of historic lighthouses in the nation, the National Lakeshore also boasts miles of pristine shoreline and beaches, rugged sandstone cliffs, spectacular sea caves, old growth forests and historic fishing camps. There are many ways to visit the islands: Apostle Islands Cruises offers narrated tours of the islands, hiker day trips and camper shuttles. www.apostleisland.com

The Wisconsin Lake Superior Byway received its official State of Wisconsin confirmation in fall of 2012. This 70-mile stretch of STH 13 follows the shoreline of Lake Superior from the roundabout intersection of US 2 and STH13 to the intersection of County Road H and STH13 in the Town of Cloverland. It is a snapshot of the geological, historical, cultural, ecological and recreational diversity of the region, featuring breathtaking scenic views of forests, pristine sandy beaches, quaint harbor towns, historic fishing villages and small farms. The beauty of the byway is experienced through the stories and scenery that embrace the majesty of Lake Superior. One billion years in the making, it is the largest freshwater lake in the world by surface area, and the third largest by volume. Sandstone cliffs along the byway showcase millions of years of wave action on this largest of the Great Lakes. National, state, county and local concentrations of natural resource areas are unsurpassed. Becoming a scenic byway is not an easy process. The highway has to be part of the state highway system (a numbered state or federal highway other than an interstate) at

least 30 miles long, offer travelers outstanding scenic views or historic resources combined with recreational and cultural attributes, and be initiated and supported by local groups and governments. Twelve local governments and the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa cooperated to make the byway a reality. Visit the byway’s website at www.lakesuperiorbyway.org. for more information and links to all of the sites mentioned here. There’s also a printable brochure and map available on the website that can be used for a self-guided tour of the byway. bayfield visitor guide 2017 y page 37

Whether you’re looking for great views, a quiet forest hike or an exhilirating single track experience, the Bayfield area has many options for experiencing the great outdoors both on foot or on two wheels. Enjoy an easy hike on the Gil Larsen Trail and explore the Big Ravine, right in downtown Bayfield. Stroll the new Waterfront Walk and learn about the maritime history of the area or tackle a more challenging trail at Meyer’s Beach and view the famous sea caves of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore from above.

The Bayfield area has plenty of opportunities for cyclists as well. The rolling hills of the Fruit Loop are perfumed by apple blossoms in the springtime and are perfect for road biking. The trails of the Chequamegon National Forest and its logging roads afford the chance to explore the region on a fat bike. And the CAMBA cluster at Mt. Ashwabay is a world class single track experience.

The Wisconsin Lake Superior Scenic Byway will take you on a breathtaking side trip to the South Shore of Lake Superior. It is a must for visitors visiting the Chequamegon Bay area for the first time. The beauty of the shoreline and the quaint little fishing villages of Cornucopia, Herbster and Port Wing, are fun and interesting. On your way north from Bayfield on Highway 13, you’ll come upon the first South Shore community, Cornucopia, in approximately 20 miles. Here is the western entrance to the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. This small, friendly village with its picturesque harbor is famous for clean sandy beaches and beautiful sunsets. Some of the distinctive old fishing sheds on the waterfront have been converted to wonderful gift shops and galleries.

page 40 y bayfield.org

Located a few miles further along on Highway 13 and beach, Herbster is the next community and you will see the area’s beauty as you begin your descent into the Cranberry River Valley. Further along on Highway 13 is the village of Port Wing which is reminiscent of a New England fishing village. In the center of the town is the community park with a gazebo made from the bell tower of the old South Shore School.

From the arrival of the Anishanaabe (Ojibwe) on Madeline Island to the boom years of big lumber and commercial fishing, history has left its mark on the Bayfield Peninsula. Bayfield’s rich history can be enjoyed by visiting the Bayfield Heritage and Maritime Museums or by experiencing a walking tour that includes a variety of historical buildings. Many of Bayfield’s historical homes now operate as bed-and-breakfasts or inns, treating guests to the atmosphere of 19th-century life in Bayfield. Commissioned in 1903, and officially opened in 1904, the Bayfield Carnegie Library is one of the oldest free public library in Wisconsin. Featuring a collection of over 19,000 items, a book club, a writer’s group, Movie Nights and other special events throughout the year, this historic building is open year-round. Be sure to stop in for a visit. Through the years, the rise and fall of the fortunes of commercial fishing, quarrying, lumbering, and the comings and goings of a diverse assortment of settlers and visitors, have given Bayfield its unique character. Bayfield Heritage Tours offer several historical walking tours. See ad on page 27 and page 50 for more information.

Just a 20-minute ferry ride away, Madeline Island offers great restaurants and shopping plus a historical museum that chronicles Native American life, the fur trade and arrival of missionaries, 19th century fishing, logging, brownstone mining, and maritime lore. Madeline Island has a rich arts community with art galleries, artist’s studios, a renowned music camp, and one of the top ranked art and craft schools in the country—Madeline Island School of the Arts. The Island also offers some of the area’s most beautiful parks, camping, a world class marina, and an 18-hole Robert Trent Jones golf course.

Rent a bicycle and discover The Island at your own pace. The terrain is relatively flat and paved roads make for an enjoyable cycling experience. Take a kayak tour to Big Bay State Park, where you can explore the large inland lagoon or venture out onto Lake Superior to check out the nearby sea caves and sandstone bluffs. Rentals are available in downtown La Pointe.

Explore our island culture.
