ARE YOU READY? Hurricane Preparedness is
Essential:
H
urricane Season begins June 1 of each year. Whether this is your first storm or your 100th, it is always good to prepare.
ALERTS • Download a hurricane alert app or service such as NOAA, The Weather Channel, KPRC Hurricane Tracker, or National Hurricane Center. • Monitor your local news and weather. • Know your evacuation zone (Coastal, A, B, C) and identify emergency routes. Evacuation Zones are set by zip code. • Discuss an evacuation plan with family and friends, including those who are out of town in case you need to shelter there. Choose a rendezvous point if separated. • Know where your local shelters are located. EMERGENCY SUPPLY KIT Build an emergency supply kit with essential items that you and your family will need during the storm and possibly several days after. Remember that your home might be without running water or electricity for several days or even weeks. • Food – At least three days of unperishable food available per person. • Water – At least one gallon of water per person per day. • Flashlight – At least one with extra batteries. • Cell Phone/Tablet – Charge up all portable chargers in advance so you will have plenty of power to keep cell phones and tablets running. Consider in investing in a solar charger power bank. • Rain Gear – waterproof coats and boats are essential if you have to evacuate during the storm. You may need rainboots to travel through flooded streets or areas. • First Aid Kit • Coolers – prepack them with bags of ice and/or cold packs. • Sleeping bags or blankets for each person. – These can be needed at shelters or when evacuating to another location. • Whistle – to signal for help.

F
ew things in life are more important than peace in the world, Clear Lake architect and former Space Center Rotary President Michael Porterfield will be quick to tell you. So important that he and his son, Houston Porterfield, designed a peace monument that greets those arriving at the entrance to Clear Lake Park on NASA Parkway. The peace monument was designed after the one at the World Trade Center that was erected to replace the twin towers after the 9/11 tragedy but is timely today with war going on in Ukraine. On each side of the monument, in different languages, is the message “Peace through understanding.” At the very top rests the Rotary International symbol, like a Christmas tree ornament.
The tower itself illuminates – symbolically and literally spreading light. Porterfield’s youngest son, Tyler, wrote a song titled, “Peace Song,” and performed it for the Rotarians, veterans, locals and media there for the presentation of the monument at the park. His song can be found under Tyler’s stage name, Pop Cautious, and is available on Spotify, Apple Music and more. “The lyrics explain that peace is not only applicable to global events such as the war in Ukraine but can be attained as an individual,” Michael Porterfield said. “It is a vital concept in transforming political and social issues that humans all over the world face daily. Conflict resolution is a key concept of Rotary, which encourages members and non-members alike to stop and think about what ‘peace’ really means.”

Recently, while we were on vacation in Kent Newman and Rob Jacobs on guitar, Mike McColloch on guitar/keys, Scott Tennessee, we surprised them at Izzy’s in Franklin, near their new home of Madigan on bass, Stacey Steele on drums and they all sing too. Technically, Nashville. They are making their way through the very top-notch music AM/FM played the numbers flawlessly. A note on the vocals - with five singers in the band, each covered a lead song in line with the original singer we remember and when not singing lead, they harmonized equally as well. A AJEAL AT IZZY'S TN strong cast they be - These talented musicians have extensive resumes in the region including stints with Diamond Jack, That 70’s Thing, Escape, Rat Ranch, Madigan, and others. CNB Marine Solutions An EZ Fix
By Patty Eng Photos By GH Andrew
B
rett Barrett knew there had to be a better way. A very noxious smell from the washroom, what mariners call the head, was engulfing his entire beloved boat. Brett knew it was a leaky joker valve in the marine toilet and the task of changing it didn’t thrill him. Plenty of boat owners try to ignore the smell as long as possible because changing the valve can mean getting raw sewage or toilet clogging material all over the floor. So what caused him to create a better way to handle this problem? “I have a mean wife,” Brett drolls with his dry humor. As Brett’s wife, Nina, challenged her mechanical engineer husband to fix this problem quickly, he began to think about what was needed to change the valve without the mess and in less time. After he worked on the design, he fired up the 3D printer he had onboard to create his very first EZ Joker. It took about three to four days for the printer to make the prototype which he was able to install in minutes. Now he would able to change it again in the future without sewage being spilled everywhere or performing the necessary clean-up after a typical replacement. A bright new idea was born. Realizing that other boat owners would need and appreciate an EZ fix to a messy problem, Brett created CNB Marine Solutions to manufacturer the EZ Jokers. “C” is for his mom, Carol, a huge supporter of the company and her brilliant son, Brett. Nina, the “N” in the company name, is actually not mean at all, just a no-nonsense mother and grandmother who doesn’t want their boat to smell bad or be awash in wastewater. Brett, a disabled veteran, is the “B” in the moniker, and wanted to not only have a creative solution but also a different kind of company that gives back to the community. Rounding out CNB is daughter Kodie Stafford who manages the office and sister Kristi Trent who is the website designer and master.

Bay Area Houston Magazine | JULY 2022
to A Messy Problem From the CNB Marine Solutions website at cnbmarinesolutions.com
How to Change a Joker Valve Before EZ Joker, the only way to change the Joker Valve on your marine toilet, was to remove the waste discharge elbow where it’s housed — and take the gush of raw sewage like a man. With EZ Joker, changing your Joker valve couldn’t be easier. Let’s compare.
HOW TO CHANGE THE JOKER VALVE ON A MARINE TOILET
The Old Way vs. The EZ Way CNB Marine Solutions is an all-American business located in Kemah, Texas. All materials, parts, and equipment are 100% made in the USA. Brett just doesn’t say that, he researches and documents everything to ensure that CNB is producing his home grown EZ Joker with domestic products. Brett also hires veterans to help him build and manufacture the three replacements that can fit most types of marine toilets: EZ Joker I for manual models, EZ Joker II for Raritan PH types, and EZ Joker III for those with vacuum flush. His full-service machine shop also produces other custom items for boats and pools such as railings and ladders. Exactly what is a Joker valve? The Joker is a one direction valve that allows fluid and other material to leave the toilet without it going back the way it came. Joker valves do wear out and may have to be changed as often as three times a year depending on usage. Because they can be prone to leakage as they age, dirty water may seep out, causing the smell and mess. In a typical set-up, the water discharge elbow that holds the Joker has to be disconnected to change the valve, resulting in major spillage of whatever is backing up into the marine toilet or leaking on to the floor. There is nothing in regular pipe designs to prevent this, making the valve change a major headache and tremendous mess. How does the EZ Joker provide the solution? Brett explains, “EZ Joker permanently replaces the discharge elbow where spills occur, so you never have to remove pipes or deal with raw sewage to change a Joker valve again. With a ¼ twist of the drum, EZ Joker’s patented rotating mechanism blocks water while providing easy access to the Joker valve. All you have to do to replace it is drop a new one in.” The EZ Joker is getting attention both domestically and abroad. The United States has given CNB Marine Solutions three patents for this inventive valve system. Korea has awarded one patent and has another one pending. The European Union also has two patents pending. As much of their business is by mail order, CNB can essentially serve customers around the world. CNB Marine Solutions featured the EZ Joker at last year’s IBEX, the International BoatBuilders’ Exhibition & Conference for marine industry professionals. The EZ Joker was selected as one of the top 15 best items at the show. With its reasonable cost of starting around $150 each plus its great advantages for marine plumbing solutions, IBEX predicted it to be a huge game changer for boat owners needing an affordable and easy solution to an unpleasant problem. Each EZ Joker is individually machined, drilled, and tested. With their money back guarantee, boat owners are given extra assurance about the diligence that every Joker gets prior to its being shipped free
• Gather tools and safety gear • Remove the waste discharge elbow • Human water spills on you and floor • Lose your lunch (optional) • Clean up raw sewage with chemicals • Install the new valve • Reattach the elbow pipe • Dispose of the water • Attempt to deodorize the boat
• Grab your valve • Rotate EZ Joker a ¼ turn and pull out the retainer • Toss the old valve and drop in a new one • Put the retainer back and rotate EZ Joker a ¼ turn NO TOOLS. NO SMELL. NO MESS.
to the customer. In fact, Brett likes to hire veterans simply because of their attention to detail as well as their desire to work and ability to follow directions. It is all part of what makes CNB Marine Solutions a special company to work with – they care about their quality of their products and meeting the expectations of their customers. They are looking forward to helping you with your boating needs! To find out more about CNB Marine Solutions, visit their website at cnbmarinesolutions.com or give them a call at 281-339-7494.

ow full is your cup? Have you ever heard of that expression? The term, “cup,” can figuratively refer to your life, your soul, your circumstances or your cause. A cup that is full can be both positive and negative. David used it positively to describe his life and soul in Psalm 23, when he said about God, “You preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies. You annointest my head with oil. My cup runneth over” (Psalm 23:6 KJV) Jesus used it in reference to His cause and circumstances before he suffered and died on the cross when He prayed, “Take this cup from me, but not my will but Your will be done” (Luke 22:42). So how full is your cup? Could just one drop cause the cup to runneth over - but not in a good way? Over that last two years the pressures of a global pandemic, economic hardships, political battles, injustices, mass shootings, has produced a toxic cocktail that has filled our cups to overflowing. What that means is that everyone around you has a full cup of stress and just one more stressful thing could make it runneth over. When that happens, we have a choice to react negatively or respond positively. For example, just the other day I was driving down Nasa Parkway and a car pulled out in front of me. I must admit that I reacted negatively. Then when they didn’t speed up, I tried to pass them, only to accidentally cut off the big truck next to me. He reacted by slamming on his horn and when he could get next to me cussed me out and told me to pull over. His road rage continued for 5-6 more blocks until I reached the fly over. Now I don’t know what was going on in his life, but I know that His cup must have been full of stress and that one lane change was the drop that runneth over into rage.

CUP?
What happened is what I have coined the “Hurricane Effect.” The hurricane effect is what happens six months after a major storm hits. We see illness, deaths, relationship problems, divorce, mental health issues and more. We have been in a 2-year pandemic hurricane that has affected all facets of life. Our cups are full and not in a good way. We are just now seeing the results and it doesn’t look good. Many people’s cups are full. Your cup maybe full. Your “go-to” person’s cup maybe full. When you pour your stress into another person’s already full cup it will only overflow and usually not in a good way. I am no expert and only know bits and pieces of what is happening but I see it all around me and I see it within me. How about you? So what do we do? I believe we need to first learn how to empty our cup. Secondly, we need to learn who to empty our cup into and who not to empty our cup into. Finally, we need to help others empty their cups. •How to empty your cup: Make time and find activities that get your stress out like meditation, exercise or journaling. •Who to empty your cup: Take time to connect with your highest power through prayer. Give over to God your concerns and claim the promise in Philippians 4. God will give you a peace that surpasses all understanding in Jesus. When you see a friend, ask them open ended questions to find out first if their cup is full before you pour out your stress. •How to help others empty their cups: When you have made room in your cup, you can help others by letting them pour out some of their stress. The next time you are on the road and someone cuts you off or rages, just let off the gas and lay off the horn. Give them space so that their cup doesn’t runneth over in a bad way. And your cup may runneth over in a good way. he "Silver King" is one of the most sought after sport fish in all the world. Franklin Roosevelt once fished for them off the coast of Port Aransas. The Tarpon Motel still has the scale with his signature hanging on their wall. Now you might ask, are tarpon in the waters off Galveston? The answer is a firm yes! Captain Mike Williams has more than likely caught more tarpon than any angler, fishing off Galveston. He's landed tarpon of all sizes. Williams once caught 27 tarpon and 1 speckled trout. The trout weighed 7 pounds, the tarpon were smaller than the trout. His largest fish to date was estimated at 215 pounds. At the time of that catch, it was illegal to retain any tarpon, regardless of their size. The Texas state record has been broken four times. Three out of those four times, the state record fish was caught off the Galveston coastline. The first state record weighed 190 pounds and was landed on August 31,1961. It was caught by the late Dave Huddleston Sr., fishing for bull reds, from a pier in the Galveston Channel. Angler Tom Gibson, broke that record while fishing with Tarpon Guide Junior Wells along the Port Isabell jetties. That fish weighed 210 pounds, and was caught on a live mullet

and the Quest for Moby Dick
November 13, 1973.The third time the record was broken happened on October 6, 2006, and was caught by Jeremy Ebert. He, too was fishing for bull reds. That fish weighed 210 pounds, 11 ounces, and was caught on the 91st Fishing Pier. The current state record is 229 pounds, caught by Shane LaRue, who was fishing with his late father Captain Mike LaRue. That fish was caught off the beachfront, in an area called Tarpon Alley. The fish ate a soft plastic jig, known as a Coon Pop, and weighed a remarkable 229 pounds. Captain Mike Williams has spent over 50 years of his life studying and searching for a tarpon he's called Moby Dick. In that time

span, Williams has caught hundreds and hundreds of tarpon in the waters just off Galveston, in the corridor of Tarpon Alley. On October 16, 2015, a few hundred miles up the beach from Galveston, a tarpon was hooked and landed weighing a Louisiana state record 246 pounds. It was the largest tarpon ever caught on a rod and reel in the waters off of the United States. Could this be the "Moby Dick" Williams and other tarpon fisherman are searching for? Or, is their a bigger one, running that corridor of water, Williams and other tarpon anglers call Tarpon Alley? This year, conditions are primed for a great tarpon season off Galveston. When does it start? The answer is right now.

rucks are the hottest transportation commodity around the Bay Area and when all-new ones become available, we line-up to get one. This month, we look at an all-new midsize from Ford and a complete redesign from Toyota. FORD MAVERICK Older readers may remember the original Maverick, a long-gone import fighter from the 1970’s. The only thing used from the old Maverick is the name and it is a fitting moniker for Ford’s all-new, smallish pickup. Don’t mistake its lesser capability with bigger brothers Ranger and F-150, the Maverick is based on Ford’s Escape and Bronco Sport, so towing and hauling numbers are notably diminished The exterior is a clean design with minimal embellishments, oversized headlamps, and

proportioned grill. Wheels vary depending on the trim level you choose, XL, XLT and Lariat. Power comes from one of two, 4-cylinder engines – the turbo model delivers 250 horsepower and gets an average of 25 MPG. A hybrid model is on the way. The interior is all Ford and the Maverick’s optional big screen infotainment system that holds the Sync system works great. Seating is comfortable and has a bit of work truck swagger to it. Unloaded, the ride may feel a little stiff, but it handles well and parking it is a snap. Pricing starts at $19,995. TOYOTA TUNDRA In today’s auto industry, building the same vehicle for 14 years without a redesign is unheard of. But that’s what Toyota did with its outgoing Tundra, without guilt. Welcome the all-new Tundra for 2022, making tired eyes brighten after looking so long at the old model. Its exterior is refreshing with an oversized grille and high mounted headlights. Wheel openings give the illusion of having extensions and rear taillights are exclusively Toyota. Big news under the hood; a V-8 is no longer available. Instead, the new Tundra lineup offers two V-6’s, a hybrid and a turbo
model, the later whirrs out a respectable 389-horsepower. Combined, mileage is touted at 20-MPG and towing is up to 8,300-lb’s The interior is also part of this truck’s revamp and includes an optional 14-inch touch screen that is easy to use and includes Apple Car Play and Android Auto. There are six trim levels from which to choose, but you deserve to grab one of the upper trims. Tundra begins at $38,000. The one you want is about 60K.
