hat a fun ride this issue was. First, I want to give a huge shout out to my fearless husband and co-publisher. After many years of suffering agonizing knee pain from an old high school wrestling injury, just a little over a month ago, he underwent surgery at Munson Medical Center for a new replacement knee. (You rock Dr. Thomas O’Hagan.) He’s down but certainly not out. He still managed, albeit a little slow, to show up, cameras in hand, for every photo shoot all around town. He is very much committed to bring this beautiful magazine to life. He bravely still took on stairs to access our office and sat at a desktop to edit and perfect his raw photographs for hours! All of the smiling faces you see in these vibrant pages are proof of his steadfast resilience. You’re a rock star, honey.

You can see evidence of us hustling in the behind-the-scenes photos we are sharing with you. Right alongside the photos are the stories of people – your friends and neighbors. They are hustling, solidifying their brands, expanding, and putting their money where their mouth and talents lie. They are doubling down and taking big risks to guarantee their success.

With the “Meat Master” - Mark Wilson inside the Maxbauer’s second location.

Here are just a few to mention: Maxbauer’s owner, Mark Wilson “the meat master,” took us on a tour of his new production facility. Located across from the airport, it’s a gutsy move. He’s brazenly banking on quality, convenience, service, and a killer smile. In other bold news, our friend, Chef Eric Nittolo, has found his calling to create a Little Italy experience in Lake Leelanau. Along with his son, they have breathed new life into the closed Bella Fortuna restaurant building. The wood fired pizza is seriously worth the drive, and cheaper than a trip to Italy. A colossal move we are in awe of are newbies Jeff and Melody Collins coming to town. Owners of esteemed Glennwood Custom Builders, they have conquered the north in Petoskey. Their eyes are on the prize and firmly set to torpedo into Traverse City, right on Front Street. I’d say that’s a “go big or go home” move! They are super nice people, and you can see their spectacular home in our feature. Prepare to be wowed. Last but not least is the stunning cover and gallery of photographer Tyler Leipprandt. Also fresh in town, last November he and his wife and four young children chased their family dream of moving up to Traverse City. Tyler is full of energy, and he is launching his unique style with us. The pages ahead contain more personal journeys to discover. I hope you relish every smiling face and connect with them. It takes all of us to support each other. Let’s try hard to shop local, eat local, and to keep our area flourishing. Have you ever heard the saying, “The harder I work, the luckier I get!” We’ve got this! And here comes spring too, what’s not to love? Keep on hustling, TC! Summer is just around the corner.

Now that’s an ‘Italian Pizza,’

— LIFE’S GRAND ADVENTURE —

THE BENEFIT OF BEING NIMBLE An Innovator’s Ability to Rise to the Top During a Pandemic

“Because TentCraft manufactured their products in house, they were able to turn on a dime and try new things. Being able to innovate was the catalyst to TentCraft finding success during this unpredictable year. ‘A requirement of business is that it has to be appropriately capitalized,’ says Matt. ‘Capital is required to execute good ideas. You need capital to continue to invest, to pay people, and have some cushion, even when the world is crazy, and things are rapidly changing.’

The challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic have forced many businesses to adapt and innovate, and TentCraft is no exception. The Traverse City-based company, which specializes in outdoor marketing and advertising, saw its orders slow down in the early stages of the pandemic. With concerts and sporting events being canceled, the demand for high-quality tents and flags dried up. But as people and businesses shifted their way of doing things, so did TentCraft. Matt Bulloch, TentCraft’s owner, saw the needs changing. Schools, care facilities, restaurants – they all needed to be outside and they needed larger tents. And because TentCraft has prioritized manufacturing their own goods, they were one of the few companies able to provide the bigger tents to give the market what it needed: easy to set up tents for testing, screening, and healthcare. And when healthcare systems were overrun and setting up treatment facilities in convention centers and high school gyms, TentCraft’s ability to swiftly customize allowed them to develop indoor partitions to create makeshift rooms.

When larger banks have let Matt down, West Shore Bank has earned Matt’s trust, first by helping TentCraft secure funds through the SBA’s Paycheck Protection Program, and now as a banking partner, sounding board, and financial advisor. The sky is the limit for Matt Bulloch, a trusted businessman with no shortage of good ideas. West Shore Bank proudly delivers personalized service and expertise to its business clients. Our clients are not just numbers to us. Each business owner is an integral piece of the business community that makes Traverse City such a vibrant place to live. We care about local business because we are a local business.” Ryan Popa AVP, Commercial Loan Officer ryanp@westshorebank.com

As a business owner, Bulloch thrives on coming to work each day and focusing on the area of business that most needs his attention. Every day at TentCraft is different and he prefers it that way. And if he can have some fun along the way, even better. By striving to continuously improve, Bulloch has led TentCraft to find success despite the unexpected challenges. This passion for manufacturing and improving systems, technology, and processes is the root of perhaps Matt’s next grand adventure: reviving specialty manufacturing companies with time-tested best practices to continue the legacy those businesses were founded upon.

Kevin C. Klein A.A.E. CHERRY CAPITAL AIRPORT DIRECTOR (TVC)

How long have you worked at Cherry Capital Airport? I started December of 2002 as the operations manager and was promoted to assistant airport director in 2004. In 2011, I took the reins of airport director. It’s finally safe to fly, right? Yes. The industry has done an outstanding job following cleaning protocols that have keep travelers safe. From HEPA filters on the aircraft to reducing touch points, air travel a safe mode of transportation. 2021 are exciting times at TVC. Yes, American Airlines recently announced Boston and Philadelphia as new non-stop cities for 2021. American has also enhanced its service to New York’s LaGuardia Airport from only weekends last year to daily this summer. The airline also enhanced its service to Charlotte, North Carolina, offering daily service this year. United Airlines will be using mainline aircraft for its Chicago and Denver flights with larger regional jets being used for its Newark

and Washington Dulles non-stop flights. Additionally, Delta looks to maintain its daily schedule to and from Detroit and Minneapolis. Allegiant will restore its non-stop OrlandoSanford flight in May. This is in addition to the flights traveling to and from Tampa St. Petersburg and Punta Gorda each week. How many airlines do you work with? TVC has four carriers but, the airport reaches out to all carriers within the industry. Currently, we have upcoming meetings with Sun Country, Amazon Air, Spirit, United, American, Delta, Allegiant and Elite Airways. . What do all these new flights mean for Traverse City? Economic growth as we support an impact of over $1 billion to our region. How important is it for Traverse City to be viewed as a destination in the industry? From both the leisure and business perspective, these segments of travel are important. We want passengers to play and do business here,

offering exceptional recreation and hospitality, all growing our region’s economy. It is more affordable to fly out of TVC than some locals think, right? Yes. Our overall air fare has dropped nearly $100 per person over the last two years. With more seats available and airlines like Allegiant coming into our market, this makes our fares some of the best in the state. What is next on the horizon? Return to pre COVID-19 passenger levels by 2023. With those levels returning, comes much needed expansion of the terminal and parking lot. All in an effort to continue the premium airport experience for our guests flying in and out of TVC. Any words of wisdom or a quote that you live by? Planning equals performance. Who’s your hero? My wife Leslie. Without her I am certain I would not be the person I am or want to be.

Planting New Seeds

SCOOP

Two new sprouts are about to bloom at the iconic Garden Goods store on US-31. The spunky sprouts are new owners Cory and Elise Holman. Transplanting their success to a bigger pot. These farmers on are on a mission, from their pumpkin patch farm on Old Mission. In nature spring is a rebirth, so the timing is perfect. The beloved previous owners, Julie and Gordy Sovereign, are handing down their heirloom watering can after 26 years to germinate into retirement. They will have time to stop and smell the roses. “We look forward to Elise and Cory’s ownership as they represent a new generation of plant enthusiasts,” said Julie. The new keepers of the plants Cory and Elise are excited for the challenge. To succeed and grow we suggest full sun, compost and lots of water. But they have great roots! “We have a lot to learn. We aren’t planning any major changes, we want to keep it the way they’ve been running it, at least until we learn the ropes of the business,” said Elise. Alpaca Love All the way from Frankfort, the Nelson family Crystal Lake Alpaca Farm has trotted into Traverse City to The Village at Grand Traverse Commons. They have launched an additional boutique mirroring the same products found onsite at their farm. The family are true animal lovers, Dave Nelson is a veterinarian and Chris Nelson fell in love with Alpaca’s after her kids all grew up. “We have always wanted to have a store here and this location is perfect,” says Stephan Nelson, son of Chris and Dave. They established the farm with a herd of six in 2001. Since then, they have achieved too many awards to count, including Breeder of the Year. One national recognition is the quality of their farm’s fleece. Fun Facts: Alpaca fiber is seven times warmer than wool, softer than cashmere, doesn’t itch, insulates, its hypoallergenic, wicks away body moisture and is the most luxurious fiber known to man! The store is full of treasures, including adorable alpaca teddy bears and lions, perfect for any baby or toddler gifts that are oh so soft. Mark and Stephanie Wilson outside their new second location just across from the airport.

“Meat” & Greet “The people of this town care about quality and want to be treated with kindness,” says Stephanie Wilson. She and her husband Mark have owned Maxbauer Meat Market for over 9 years, taking extreme pride in offering exceptional meats and service. “We feel so fortunate to be a part of the memorable events that happen around food,” Stephanie said. “Mark has spent 40 minutes over the phone with someone who has never cooked a Thanksgiving turkey before. So many people don’t know what an actual butcher is for. That is why we are here, bringing love to the table with easier access.” With more cooking in the kitchen, there’s a real need for protein. Maxbauer is answering the call, bringing its unique brand to the east side of town with a new location and twist. A 4,000 square foot production facility will add

on to its meat empire, with cold storage, an online store and a “modern butcher” retail space they have named The Butcher’s Block by Maxbauer. “We realize not everyone can get downtown to have access to the quality products that we have. All our premium meats will be pre-packaged with attention to detail. In these uncertain times, we can choose fear, or we can choose giving and growing.” This second location is a million-dollar investment, state of the art, and filled with every detail imaginable. “We will have room for 22 palates of meat in the freezer, and a 20-foot by 40-foot meat cooler,” says Mark excitedly, as he took us on a personal tour. The production space is 225 square feet, filled with equipment like a $140,000 packing machine. In the raw room is a sausage machine, a burger machine that can pop out pucks of

over 100 patties a minute, and a mighty meat grinder that can bang out 2,000 pounds of burger in an hour. “We have built for growth,” laughs Mark. “It is impressive, with a smoke room, cooking room and a cooling room. (For all that famous jerky!) “My smoke room will be 10 times the size of what I have now.” The store will be monumental, offering bulk packages for planning ahead to single packs of meats and seafood just for dinner. “We will have the best meat and the best food with bagged quick and easy meal kits between $12-15. It will all be self-serve, one stop and done.” Don’t forget the wine and craft beer, they’ll have that too! “We won’t be selling toilet paper, you can get that across the street,” laughs Mark. 425 W. South Airport Rd, Traverse City maxbauers.com

Eastern Spice When Brent Temple can finally open his new restaurant, Habibi, get ready to wake up your palate to a whole new world of flavor, Middle Eastern style. “I love to cook, and I taught myself,” he said. After a crash-course in conjuring up some authentic butter chicken and chicken tikki masala, he became the head chef at The Taste of India in the Grand Traverse Mall. It’s the Arabic, Lebanese, and Mediterranean aromas that are his passion, and he has created a plethora of recipes. Now he is ready to launch his own space on the east side, right next to an old 7-Eleven space. “It’s about as close to downtown as you can get,” Brent said. Brent is still trying to get his kitchen up and running. When you do see he is open, try the chicken tikka masala. It is a staple, and sells in the United Kingdom over fish and chips. Crazy, right? 124 Cochlin Rd, Traverse City

Smokin’ Hot

For 20 years Steve’s Smokin’ BBQ has been a family business. Steve and Lori Randell and their son Logan have been serving up racks of St. Louis style ribs, heaping portions of smoked pulled pork, beef brisket and brined turkey legs all out of their log sided trailer! Now they are ready to go big, into primetime with a brick-and-mortar casual dining location right on the East side of town in Garfield Centre. This fearless family is used to serving thousands of people every year at the National Cherry Festival, so it’s not their first rodeo but is a welcome challenge. “It feels like the stars aligned and it guided our steps. We have been working on it for several months and we are excited,” says Steve. It’s not just BBQ either, they plan on launching Firebird Pizza. “It’s called fast casual pizza. It’s like a subway, you pick your crust, sauce, toppings it goes in the brick oven and it’s ready in a minute and a half. It will be a one price deal!” These made-to-order fresh pies are huge all over the country and grown in popularity over traditional pizza chains. Who knew? It all sounds mouthwatering delicious and we wish their family much success. Just as we were losing the pandemic pounds! 831 S Garfield Ave, Traverse City stevessmokinbbqtc.com

CHEERS

WELCOME TO

with Darric from Folgarelli’s

SPRING

With the temperatures slowly climbing, the sun shining, and noticeably more people out enjoying the wonders of our area, it is time to start gearing up for warm weather wines. If you are looking for a fantastic white that is both refreshing and incredible with many foods, look at Pinot Blanc. Grown throughout the globe, pinot blanc is most prevalently grown in Italy, France and Hungary as well as right here in Northern Michigan. Believed to be a mutation of Pinot Noir, Pinot Blanc is light to medium bodied, usually dry and crisp embodying flavors from the different terroirs it is grown. One of my personal favorites is the Lagaeder Pinot Bianco from Alto Adige Italy. This beautiful wine is medium bodied with a crisp and fruity flavor. Grown in mostly gravel and sand with a bit of limestone the wine also brings on a flinty flavor. This wine pairs well with cheese such as brie, Bellavitano and Poulder Goat Gouda as well as chicken and seafood dishes.

On the local scene, the Brys Estate Pinot Blanc is one of my top picks. 100% estate grown on Old Mission Peninsula, this wine shows flavors of passion fruit, pear and tropical with a nice acidity on the finish. This wine pairs well with seafood, sushi and creamy pasta. Happy Sipping,

Darric

wicked GOOD EATS

JUST OPENED — NITTOLO’S PIZZA Lake Leelanau newsflash: Little Italy has returned, and a king has found his castle! Consider the old Bella Fortuna restaurant building conquered, with talented chef Eric Nittolo now taking reign. The wood burning oven is fired up and so is Eric. Rising from the ashes you can once again taste an authentic slice of Italy, in all its glory and deliciousness. “In the first 12 days we have sold over 1,500 pizzas. I think we sold more pizzas in 10 days than Bella Fortuna did in 10 years! We are already thinking of adding another pizza oven.” That’s a big workload, but he is blessed with great help. His son Dominic is quite literally forging their success in fire. Dominic is at the helm of this blazing hot

inferno, whipping up fresh “made to order” hand tossed pizzas in a matter of minutes, the mouthwatering taste is truly Tuscan. He’s charred through five cords of wood so far. With non-stop future deliveries planned. Eric is the chef with the secret sauce. He is larger than life and knows how to hustle, marketing himself and his unique perspective on amazing food. “Just like we rocked Traverse City at Cambria Suites we’ll do the same thing here,” Eric said. Here is the plan! The outside bar area can seat 130 outside. From 3:30 – 5 pm it is a crazy happy hour. Half off food prices and a third off drink prices. They will also have live music.

Next, he hopes that his fine dining “Seafood & Social” will round out the evening. Starting at 5:30 until close is dinner only. Much like a restaurant week format, he wants to offer three courses for $39 per person. Reservations are available on the Open Table app. This is where he hopes his passion for creating spectacular cuisine will triumph. “It’s like three different places rolled into one.” “It will be a fun ride to watch, experience, and taste! We can guarantee that great grandma Nittolo’s age old recipes are “heaven sent” and will rock your world, and your tastebuds,” Eric said.

NORTHERN

HERO Urgent Needs Fund: An interview with David Mengebier, President & CEO of Grand Traverse Regional Community Foundation ‘Northern Hero’ focuses on highlighting inspiring groups, events, and individuals within our community. We seek to find people who give back to the community in selfless ways. Over the past year, Grand Traverse Regional Community Foundation’s Urgent Needs Fund has raised almost a million dollars for nonprofits in northwest Michigan’s five-county area. We sat down with President and CEO of Grand Traverse Regional Community Foundation, David Mengebier, to discuss the Urgent Needs Fund. What is the Urgent Needs Fund, and why was it created? The Urgent Needs fund was created in mid-March of 2020 in response to the pandemic. We saw that nonprofits in our area, particularly those serving basic needs (food pantries, thrift stores, emergency shelter, crisis counseling) were facing high demand for their services but low revenue streams. Almost immediately after the pandemic hit, there was a tremendous need for support.” Where does the Urgent Needs Fund allocate donations, and how are these selections made? The data showed that lower-income demographics were most affected by the pandemic. The Urgent Needs Fund focuses on nonprofit organizations serving vulnerable populations, those that were disproportionately impacted by COVID. Our goal is to find where grant dollars will have the greatest impact. Initially, we received an enormous amount of grant applications - way more than we could ever fund. As the pandemic has evolved over the past year, the demand for basic services has started to decline. We have allowed nonprofits to reapply for grant funding, and many of them have. Nonprofits have also adjusted the way they raise money, whether it’s through digital fundraising, auctions, or events. For example, Traverse City’s Downtown Development Authority used grant money to purchase products from downtown merchants, then proceeded to donate these products to nonprofits and individuals in need.

How has the community helped the Urgent Needs Fund? The Urgent Needs Fund was originally funded by various charitable foundations within the region, but over forty-percent of the gifts given came from first time donors. These were smaller donors pledging $50 or $100 at a time. We had never had a fund like this before. I think the Urgent Needs Fund demonstrates how important it is for the community to have these types of flexible funds, so that we can respond to emergent needs. We’ve been really successful with the Urgent Needs Fund, thanks to the generosity of so many people throughout the community.”

HOME GROWN & LOCAL Tom’s Food Markets

HOME GROWN & with Tom’s Food Markets

Local,

Nancy Deering Sands, President, & Jane Deering, Vice President West Bay – East Bay – 14th street – Interlochen - Northport toms-foodmarkets.com

2021 marks the 75th anniversary of your family’s business, tell us the story how it all started. It was 1945 in Empire, and on our 80-acre farm my grandparents had a huge perfect cherry crop. They made enough money to move into Traverse City and purchase the first market on the corner of 11th and Maple streets. The store was 30x40’ in size. Our grandfather cut his own beef there, our dad skinned chickens and our grandmother kept the books. The first week sales were $400. Our early stores, West Bay, 1961 and 14th street, 1968 were originally Tom’s Food Market and Family Centers, that sold shoes, clothing, albums, fabric and other general merchandise as well as groceries. Expansion continued into the 80s with locations in Acme and at the Cherryland Mall. And in the 90s Northport and East Bay Plaza, with Interlochen built in 2009. Our grandfather passed away in 1967, one year short of seeing the 14th Street location completed. Our dad told us that was the scariest time of his life when he knew he had to go forward alone. Our dad passed away March 15, 2019, and little did we know our sister would pass away just 10 short months later. My dad loved the flag and raised and lowered it everyday at all his markets and home. He was a veteran and he lived and honored greatly the American dream. How involved are you both in the day to day running of the company? Jane: I get up every day at 4.45am and my day never stops from there. The stores all check in around 6 am. I go where my car takes me and where the need is. Day to day I go to all five markets. Everyone knows they can call me for anything. I mainly focus on the deli, bakery and general merchandise. My most favorite day is Tuesday. I do the new hire orientations and I love to get to meet everyone. There is never a day that I hate to go to work and I feel so blessed. I love all of the personalities. It’s been hard this past year I feel like I get to go to work and help lift someone’s spirits. Nancy: On January 20, 2020, our beautiful sister and president Christy Kuhnke passed away. My world took a 180 degree turn when 3 weeks later I relocated to Traverse City to assume her role as president. Not a single day is the same in this business, I love that!

My days are filled with your typical barrage of emails, time spent with attorneys, accountants, contractors for our stores, art designers for marketing materials. But, most importantly I spend as much time as possible with our associates out in the markets. That’s my favorite part of any day. There are some quality items that only Tom’s Food Markets have, can you share that with us? It doesn’t get more local than Tom’s! The history and story of our markets is the true meaning of local. We support local farmers and businesses by selling as many local products as possible. Some of our own signature items are our Tom’s apple fritters, Tom’s sausage, Tom’s baked chicken, Tom’s bagels and of course our chairman’s reserve beef, that is the best! What’s the next big thing for Tom’s Food Markets? We’re super excited to be investing in our Northport market, with a complete remodel and some exciting and beautiful changes to the exterior as well in 2021. And at Tom’s East Bay we have already installed an entirely new set of produce and beverage cases that our customers are really responding to and we’ll remodel the inside as well in 2021. As well as offer Tom’s Xpress services and this fall. We want to give our customers and employees beautiful new places to shop and work. Tell us about your special 75th anniversary. Nancy: I’m happy to be home again in Traverse City and perhaps where I was always meant to be. I’m proud and honored to be carrying on our family legacy in the grocery business at Tom’s. Tom’s Food Markets celebrates 75 years serving the grocery needs of the greater Grand Traverse Area. Please come and shop local with us. We’ll have some super exciting in store specials and events across all five stores to honor our 75th. We have collaborated with Iron Fish Distillery and Short’s Brewing Company on a special single barrel bourbon aged in their stout barrels. Our dad’s favorite beer was Bellaire Brown and this fall we will have a special aged release of this delicious beer as well. Cheers to 75 years!

Nancy and Jane’s Dad, Dan Deering with grandad and founder Tom Deering.

TA K I N G T H E

HIGH GROUND A gallery by Tyler Leipprandt of Michigan Sky Media

ArtPrize award winning photo of high above ‘The Mighty Mac’

“Three of my favorite things are the Mighty Mac, flying, and living on the edge! Make sure you buckle up folks! (This image, and those like it, are not approved by my wife)”

Let us introduce you to Tyler Leipprandt; photographer extraordinaire with a little daredevil thrown in just for good measure. His most spectacular images have been captured hanging out of a helicopter high above the most iconic Michigan landmarks. It’s just another day at the office for Tyler, taking it all in stride perfecting his craft to create one of kind thrilling images. His company, Michigan Sky Media, is most renowned for and was founded on his breathtaking drone still shots, and videography. In showcasing Michigan’s magnificent beauty all around us Tyler can boast an impressive array of clients including Pure Michigan, Detroit Free Press, M-22, Vernors, Michigan State Parks, Michigan DNR, and many more. But Tyler, in true entrepreneur spirit, is venturing into so much more by expanding into 3-D virtual imagery in the real estate and business world. With non-stop energy, and a “can do” attitude, we are thrilled to partner with him to bring just a small amount of his resume to life in these pages. His biggest project to date was last November, spreading his wings moving his young family up to Traverse City.

“In the Summer of 2020, comet Neowise made a stunning appearance over an already spectacular Turnip Rock. This long exposure shot captures so much of the beauty but tricks the viewer into thinking the lake was calm, when actually I battled three-foot waves to get it.”

“I love to photograph the nights sky, but sometimes I will go the extra mile and capture star trails. This photo consists of 150 images taken over a 1-hour time span and stacked on top of each other. These streaks are created by the earth’s rotation.”

“Many people think this image may have been taken above Lake Superior as it has a lot of rock formations. It was actually captured in Port Austin over Lake Huron. Port Austin is also home to the famous Turnip Rock!”

“Lake Superior can be brutal and even deadly, but it can also be so majestic. For years, I have been wanting to travel to this cave at Pictured Rocks, and it sure did not disappoint, although I went in with two cameras and only left with one.”

“It was about two years ago when I called my wife and told her about this crazy idea (which I have many). At that moment, I had just gotten off the top of the Mackinac Bridge, dangling 550 feet in the air. She thought I was crazy, but my idea was to dangle Michigan’s most iconic locations.....I had just dangled the Mighty Mac, which is the hardest one to dangle because of the slim chance that people get to go up there. So over the last two years, I have dangled Detroit, U of M, MSU, Pictured Rocks, the Mackinac Bridge, and more all for this “idea” that I have. This idea not only was a way to satisfy my extreme side, but was apart of a larger project I am working on for @artprize. ArtPrize is the world’s largest art competition in Grand Rapids, and it was canceled for the fall 2020. Talk about a huge bummer for me and all the work that had gone into my dangle series. I am hopeful that ArtPrize will return this year so I can share my two year adrenaline rush with you all! As a photographer, these are the types of things that keep me going. I love to think outside the box and live on the edge.” — Tyler Leipprandt

“One of the most amazing sunrises I have ever witnessed was at Lake of the Clouds in the Upper Peninsula. The trees and sky couldn’t have given a more colorful display.”

The Michigan Sky Media Family

What do you get when you give a technology instructor a drone? An emerging Michigan photographer of course! Okay, so maybe that wasn’t what you expected, and honestly, me either, but that is exactly what happened. I was working in education and personalized drones started hitting the market. I asked my wife if I could get one and she approved the purchase on one condition- that I found a way to earn back the expense. So, I did some research and made some contacts with real estate agents. With aerial photography being quite new, I quickly made up for the cost. As I learned to fly the drone, I soon found that I couldn’t help but snap pictures of the amazing view from the sky. Living in the thumb of Michigan at the time, I gravitated towards the shores, the sunsets, Turnip Rock and lighthouses. I spent a couple years improving my skills before deciding that I needed to broaden my horizons and added some handheld cameras to my arsenal.

I spent countless hours researching, learning, and practicing my craft. Friends and family started sharing my pictures and business began picking up. My wife and I often called photography my “other full time job.” So much so that last fall, I decided to quit my 11-year career in education, sell our house, and pursue our dreams full time with Michigan Sky Media. My wife and I, with our four children in tow, knew that in order to pull this off, we needed to be in progressive “year round town.” And, Traverse City has proven to be that very place. It offers unmatched natural beauty and remarkable people with a true appreciation for creativity and adventure in all seasons. Both in business and family life, we are so grateful for the support and encouragement of our new Northern Michigan community. I consider myself a self-taught (YouTube taught) photographer/videographer that has been blessed with some incredible opportunities to both challenge and display my skills. The fact that I love to push the limits and showcase unique perspectives has opened doors to working with organizations such as Pure Michigan,

Vernors, the Detroit Free Press Marathon, Michigan State Parks and DNR, M22 and magazines such as Country Lines, Midwest and Baylife. Looking ahead, we plan to continue traveling the beautiful state of Michigan and capturing all it has to offer. As you make your way around the mitten state, you can find my printed work displayed in the Port Austin Farmers Market (Port Austin, MI), Westbay Handmade (Traverse City, MI), Sleeping Bear Gallery (Empire, MI) and online at michiganskymedia.com. Make sure to follow us on Instagram and Facebook for fresh content. Also, keep your eye out for our work in the Grand Rapids ArtPrize Competition this Fall. In addition to artwork, we offer some of the most customizable virtual 3D tours (for school districts, wineries, hotels, shops, real-estate...etc) commercial and personal videography (engagements, weddings, marketing...etc), and high-quality photography (product and real-estate). Our ability to capture from up close, in the air, and everywhere in between sets us apart. Stay beautiful Michigan—you make our job easy! APRIL/MAY 2021 | BAYLIFE MAGAZINE

PROJECT

HOME WITH ANGELA GOODALL

LET COLOR RETURN! As the gray days of winter subside, so does the trend of the gray with white, or sometimes all white for our homes. Nothing could make me happier! Although I appreciate the clean uncluttered aspects to the latest design craze (thank you Chip and Joanna), I am a color girl. We can greatly underestimate how a color can make us feel. Yellow is like the sunshine and evokes happiness, blue reminds us of the sky and water and the lazy summer days in northern Michigan. Varying shades of green are the trees and plants growing around us. With the latest group of clients, we are underway designing for, there has very much been a call for more color. Shades of coral, emerald, buttercream and warm wood tones, back up the white surrounding. Brass is still holding strong due to its warmth with the introduction of the colors. Navy is also still very popular and fitting to homes in our area.

Angela Goodall is the lead designer and co-owner of Kitchen Choreography with her husband Mike.

MODERN EXCELLENCE

within nature

Written by Brittany Darga Kat Alves Photography

NATURE

has a lot of color hues to offer. From trees, flowers, and plants alive with greens, reds, oranges, and yellows, to the vibrant blue of the sky, and even the darker earth tones. That is why this modern dream home has wall-to-wall windows and has only natural and textured tones throughout. “The color is outside,” said Melody Collins who with her husband, Jeff Collins, own Glennwood Custom Builders and built and own this home. The home in the photos featured here was built in Lake Tahoe, Calif. and the couple are currently replicating the home in Northern Michigan on Lake Charlevoix. “We looked at our Lake Tahoe house, which fits into the mountain setting very well, and realized it would also fit into the woods and lake scene of Northern Michigan,” Jeff said. “This house lets the beauty of nature surround you indoors and Northern Michigan certainly is beautiful enough to allow for that.” Jeff and Melody take pride in the fact that this house is modern. “It’s modern but not stuffy,” Jeff said. “It still has a very cozy, inviting feel. It will fit into Northern Michigan well.” Architect Ryan Marsden, who is also licensed in Michigan, designed the home, and Mike Branan, president of Glennwood Custom Builders, was a key player as well. Drive up to this house, and it is instantly noticeable that the house lacks something – drywall. Every single outside wall is comprised of mostly all windows. In the western home, one side looks out into the woods, the other to the mountains. In the Lake Charlevoix house, the mountains will be replaced by the lake. “Some people walk into our house and say they don’t feel as if they’re in a house at all – they feel like they are outside,” Melody says. “That is exactly the intent.”

THE FIRST STEP guests take in the house is in the foyer, where two

unique pieces of “artwork” can be seen. These pieces are actually huge slabs of granite placed ever so carefully on the walls. “It was a project,” laughs Jeff. “We had to reinforce the walls to get these hung up.” Turn a corner, and guests are in a gorgeous living area with a gigantic striking view of outside through 12-foot-tall by 25-foot-wide lift and slide doors. The distinctive, substantial fireplace is made of black rolled steel, which can also be found on the ceiling. On the left side of the fireplace is a gas fire; on the other is a television.

“While sitting in the living area, we wanted the fireplace, TV, and the view all at the same level,” Jeff said. “That way, we can see all at the same time.”

FOLLOW WALNUT FLOORS to the open concept kitchen and one will notice double islands – a butcher block island for prepping food, and a quartz counter top island with waterfall sides for sitting and dining. There is room for seating at both sides of this island, and also room for more at the dining table. “We set it up for entertaining,” Melody said.

DETAILS certainly do not get missed in

this house and that is evident in the textured, impeccable tile work in the kitchen, drawing attention to the wine and cocktail shelf. The smooth, glossy cabinets in the kitchen are black acrylic, made by Stillwater Custom Cabinetry in Petoskey.

“So many things in this house were made in Michigan and shipped to Lake Tahoe,” Jeff said. “We plan to do the same in the replicated house on Lake Charlevoix.”

OPEN THE MASSIVE lift and slide doors and guests are taken to a gorgeous patio with an even more

stunning view. Cozy patio furniture is plentiful next to the massive linear fire pit and built-in grilling station. The porch also will have the option to drop down screens to make it a screened in. When overlooking stunning Lake Charlevoix from the patio, guests will be able to see a pool before a retaining wall meets the lake.

AS IF THERE weren’t already enough

places to enjoy a beautiful view, the cozy master suit offers more. Enclosed in yet again mostly windows, there are panoramic outdoor views. At the foot of the bed is some stone work that lifts up to showcase a television. “We didn’t want the TV there all the time,” Jeff said. “We wanted a way so that if you don’t want to look at it, you don’t have to.” The master bathroom has more windows and more views to offer, even in the shower and neighboring bathtub.

“It’s all scenery beyond the windows, so there’s no need for extra privacy,” Jeff said.

With an office already in Petoskey, the couple recently bought space in downtown Traverse City for a second office. In the spot Georgina’s was, they are excited to make a former restaurant into an office space of their own during the next few months!

WALK DOWN the free-standing steel staircase, which you can see from the outside where guests first drive up, and there is another living area, game room, gym, bar, and wine cellar with colored LED lights that change colors. “You can see the LED lights from the outside, which is a pretty neat feature,” Jeff says. There are also three en-suite bedrooms, each decorated impeccably; no detail is forgotten.

CAMP CARVELA

Camp Carvela is a partner of the renowned Camp Lookout and Crystalaire Adventures THE EXTERIOR of the house is certainly notable. Where there

isn’t a window, there is corrugated metal with gray stained sealer. There is also a three-bay garage, with one bay for motorcycles, snowmobiles, four-wheelers, and bikes. The low pitch of the roof of the house comes into question a lot, Jeff mentioned. “One year in Lake Tahoe we got 60 feet of snow in a season. Not 60 inches; 60 feet,” Jeff said. “This roof is made to withstand at least 200 pounds of weight per square inch. And it is made so snow doesn’t slide off when it melts.” Jeff says there’s maybe some misconceptions about what a modern home really is.

They are where perfectionism is at the uttermost importance. Everything from the architecture, to the strategic placement of things one might not think of such as vents,” Jeff says. “Everyone on our team ‘gets it’ and everyone worked together so well to make this home absolutely perfect.”

“Because the Camp is in Traverse City right on Bass Lake, our daughter still got to have all the confidence building benefits of sleepover camp, meeting new friends and creating memories, without any of the far away anxiety. She didn’t want to come home!” Tom & Teri Gorsline

And now this style of home is coming to Northern Michigan. “We’ve always loved the water and we are excited to see this type of home take ahold here.”

Why Consistency Always Wins Over Intensity

PHOTOGRAPH BY JAQUELINE SOUTHBY

SEVERAL YEARS AGO, I read an inspirational blog post from local entrepreneur and leadership author Angie Morgan about a documentary she viewed at the Traverse City Film Festival. The film, After So Many Days, chronicled one year in the life of a twoperson band—Jim and Sam—and their decision after innumerable setbacks promoting their music, to do something drastic. They set out on a year-long tour with one mission: to perform every single day for the entire year—even if it meant playing for patrons in a neighborhood coffee shop or customers at a random liquor store. Or serenading to a food delivery guy: for one whole year, they were going to be relentless in pursuing their dream. (You can check out the film trailer on YouTube—it’s inspiring!) To me, their story is another reminder of the under-appreciated importance of consistency in a world that loves intensity. Let’s face it. We are a society that loves quick wins and flashy paint jobs over slow, steady, consistent, and often-mundane change. In Aesop’s famous fable, we tend to identify more with the dashing hare than the plodding tortoise. But just as the faster hare ended up losing the race, so intensity is never enough if you’re committed to winning. Author Simon Sinek puts it this way:

“Intensity is like going to the dentist. We know when we’re going, how long we will be there, and when we’re done. Our teeth will be smooth and look pearly. But if that’s all we do, eventually, our teeth will fall out. Intensity is not enough, so we need to brush our teeth twice a day. What does brushing your teeth for 2 minutes do for you? Nothing…unless you do it every single day.”

You can apply Sinek’s observations in so many areas of work and life: • Every day try to eat a salad and save a burger and fries for once in a while. • Go to the gym for 30 minutes every day versus for four hours occasionally. • Reading for 20 minutes a day from a content-rich leadership book versus attending a three day leadership conference once a year. • Schedule a weekly date night with your spouse versus only a romantic getaway weekend at an expensive resort for your 20th anniversary. In every case, choosing consistency over intensity will, in the beginning, produce no measurable impact on your physical health, leadership capacity, or relational intimacy. But over six months, two years, or 10 years, it will transform your life… like it transformed Jim and Sam’s lives in the film. For the record, intensity is awesome! I love attending conferences, pushing myself at the gym, and planning vacations with my wife. But if you’re committed to lasting, meaningful transformation, it’s the accumulation of little things that, over time, lead you to become the best version of yourself. Here’s a question to consider: What’s one area of your life where swapping intensity for consistency would have the greatest impact?
