Dream Big
NOTE FROM THE
publisher
I
recently read a wonderful motivational book written by Danica Patrick that speaks to the mind, spirit, body, and soul and has healthy eating and exercise plans thrown in. I have tried to put practices from this book in my every day routine. In the book she also shares “when signing autographs for young fans, I always write Dream Big!” She is living proof of dreaming big – she became a female race car driver. As I put thought into what this issue brings to you, “Dream Big” stood out as a continuous theme. The first example is epic. I hope you were wowed by the magnificent cover. It’s the famous award-winning photograph, “God’s Light” that catapulted Todd Reed’s talent into the stratospheres. He captured it on September 19th, 1997. His wife, unbeknownst to him, entered the slide into a National Nikon Competition and it came in third. While juggling many successful careers, he has become one of the best-known award-winning outdoor photographers in Michigan along the way. He eventually fulfilled his life-long dream of becoming a full-time photographer and owning a gallery. We are excited to share some of his many photos with you from his new book. We also have the story of Matt and Keegan Myers who started a little t-shirt company. You may have heard of it: M22? Their journey began back in 2004. Thousands of other products later, M22 is an epic brand with multiple locations, a wine label, a triathlon challenge, and now M22 micro adventures; an up north card set that is a guidebook on where to go and what to do. The brothers originally were promoting their kiteboard business; wearing a self-made M22 shirt was a happy accident. But once it gained a little traction, they dreamt a lot bigger! The gorgeous house we spotlight is a journey of a dream fulfilled. Starting as a little beloved cottage the family had outgrown. The cottage reborn, is a spectacular palatial home with stunning craftsmanship and designed to meticulous perfection. The final product is tailor made and is the star in these pages as an aspirational dream home. As with every other issue we are sharing the stories of budding entrepreneurs starting a new business with starry eyes, going all in on their dreams too. Traverse City is booming and growing exponentially. Thank goodness we moved here when we did. So, if you are anything like my little family, we feel blessed that dreams become reality every day and that we get to live in this awesome place. It is our home. Where, to us, it’s still a small town, with a wonderful community spirit and great big heart. Teri Gorsline, Publisher BayLife Magazine

NORTHERN
HERO
Hagerty’s Impact Program An interview with Brittany VanderBeek, Impact Manager at Hagerty ‘Northern Hero’ focuses on highlighting inspiring groups, events, and individuals within our community. We seek to find people who give back to the community in selfless ways. Hagerty recently instituted their new Impact program, which furthers the company’s commitment to positively impacting the greater Grand Traverse community.
High School Sailor Andrew Godmer
Hello,
16-year-old Traverse City West Senior High School student Andrew Godmer got the opportunity of a lifetime this summer! A coveted invitation to sail in the renown Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac, as part of the Chicago based USA-Esprit d’Ecosse team. Andrew’s love of sailing can be attributed to being a part of the high school sailing program. He also coaches younger kids on the Boardman River with Traverse Area Community Sailing (TACS). Congratulations Andrew! What an amazing honor. You are wonderful inspiration for a dedicated work ethic.
Sailor
We sat down with Impact Manager at Hagerty, Brittany VanderBeek, to discuss the new Impact program. Hagerty recently rolled out a new Impact program with corporate citizenship and giving initiatives. What were the driving factors behind this program? The program is centered around the company’s mission to save driving for future generations by fostering human connections and supporting local communities. Hagerty Impact program focuses on supporting the following: people in our communities, community stewardship of the environment, and prosperity of local business through economic development. How have Hagerty’s corporate citizenship and giving initiatives impacted our Traverse City community? We take pride in hiring locally and providing meaningful careers in the communities in which we live and work, including more than 900 employees in Traverse City and the surrounding areas. Since 2019, Hagerty has been a Champion Level Investor of Traverse Connect, donating $300,000 to the economic development and prosperity of the Traverse City community.
City News Colleen Paveglio in a new role
Congratulations go to Colleen Paveglio, who has become the new communications specialist for the City of Traverse City. “I am thrilled to serve in this new role and grow the city’s communication landscape to increase civic engagement and identify opportunities to share the city’s message in an open and inclusive manner,” says Paveglio. “As a resident of the city, I have a deep passion for our community and I am honored to have the opportunity to work together to build civic pride.” 10
AUG/SEPT 2021 | BAYLIFE MAGAZINE
In 2020, Hagerty donated $40,000 in 19 relief funds to local hospitals and urgent needs funds. And this year, through our new corporate giving program, we have provided donations to support the Scale Up North Awards, 20 Fathoms Start Up Weekend, TART Trails 27th Annual Smarter Commute Week, and the National Cherry Festival. What types of organizations in the greater Grand Traverse region does Hagerty support, and how can assistance be requested? Hagerty’s new corporate giving program provides donations that support the economic development, prosperity and environmental stewardship of the Traverse City community and other communities near our offices worldwide. We partner with nonprofit organizations that promote economic development and small businesses such as Traverse Connect. Hagerty’s Impact program has a new website and evaluation criteria for its corporate giving program, as well as a streamlined online application process for stakeholders to request donations. For more information, please visit impact.hagerty.com.

Did you always dream of being the cherry queen? I did! In the first grade I was chosen as a first grade Cherry Princess for Elk Rapids Elementary School, I was able to meet the National Cherry Queen and I was awestruck. What are you most excited about? Being an ambassador for the National Cherry Festival, an advocate for the cherry industry, and to promote the Queen’s Program. You’ll be able to find me visiting orchards, other festivals, giving back, and visiting with schools/summer camps to teach children about the industry.
Shane Inman, Janice Binkert, Scott Naumes, Ueli Binkert
Who is your role model? It would have to be my mom. She is unbelievably strong, driven, and is always willing to help others. She is standing proud with lip-gloss and bobby pins in hand ready to help me shine in this new role. She is one of the people that really encouraged me to chase this dream of mine! What is your career goal? I am in my senior year at Baker College in Cadillac and by the end of the year I will have my bachelor’s degree in nursing. My goal is to work a few years as a nurse before heading back to school to reach my ultimate career goal which is being a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner!

“Traverse City is a town that’s open to new ideas, people taking chances.” — Doug Stanton
The Stantons were born in Michigan and lived in 7 other states before returning to stay.
Traverse is now recognized as “Michigan’s Book City.”
Doug and Anne Stanton have perfected the art of striving for a dream, working diligently to accomplish it, and stepping up to passionately take on another. Doug is a #1 New York Times best-selling author; Anne, a former journalist and editor. Together, they founded the National Writers Series —which Anne now runs. Nearly ten years later, they continue to inspire the community by bringing national authors and drawing sold-out crowds. While their impact is far-reaching, Anne and Doug’s commitment to Traverse City remains passionate and steadfast. “This town is small enough that you can have an impact, yet large enough, in both cultural and financial capital, to make things happen,” said Doug. Their praise for West Shore Bank is just as enthusiastic. “You get real people, who answer the phone right away, and take care of what you need—right away,” said Anne. “That’s worth something.” West Shore Bank. MOVER & SHAKER LIEUTENANT COMMANDER US COAST GUARD
MEET
C hrist Wright LIEUTENANT COMMANDER US COAST GUARD
Welcome, to Traverse City! You are our new Commanding Officer of the US Coast Guard Air Station. When did you arrive and where were you stationed before? I officially checked into the Coast Guard Air Station Traverse City on July 12. I was previously stationed at U.S Coast Guard Sector in San Diego, CA, where I was the Sector Response Chief and Air Station Operations Officer. What are your first impressions of Traverse City? The city is very family oriented and has tons of amenities to help kids stay active. The natural scenery is amazing and living near multiple lakes provides for unique family experiences. Also, the community truly loves and supports the Coast Guard. It is this support that ensures our service members are mission ready and well-cared for throughout their tour. Where are you from originally and how long have you served in the Coast Guard? I am originally from Ocean City, NJ. I enrolled in the U.S. Coast Guard Academy starting in the summer of 1997, receiving my commission as an Ensign in 2001. 18
AUG/SEPT 2021 | BAYLIFE MAGAZINE
“Semper Paratus” is a Coast Guard pledge for “always ready.” What are goals for your new post in Traverse City? Our unit’s primary objective is to save lives: rescuing those in distress on the water, securing our nation’s borders, and protecting our natural resources from pollution threats. As such, our number one goal will be to maintain the service’s reputation as the world’s best Coast Guard by providing aircraft and competent aircrews who are ready to respond 24/7. We will also continue the great community partnerships enjoyed by previous commands and create new community relationships wherever possible. Tell us about your family that moved here with you. I have been happily married to my beautiful wife, Jamie, for 15 years. We have an energetic 4-year-old girl and a baby boy that is due in early August. What is one thing on your bucket list to enjoy in Traverse City? Go boating on Lake Michigan and explore the islands.
Who is your hero/mentor? My mom. Throughout life’s trials and tribulations, she has always been there to cheer me on and provide me with positive encouragement to ensure that I not only persevere, but also grow as a person. Tell us three words to describe you. Driven, compassionate, Christian. What would your wife tell us about you? That I like to cook and am actually good at it! She’ll also tell you that I enjoy a nice glass of red wine at the end of a long day. Tell us one hidden talent you have that would surprise us. By going to a military academy, I can high speed wax and buff a floor with the best of ‘em. Is there a quote that inspires you? “If I cannot do great things, I can do small things in a great way” – Martin Luther King, Jr. What do you do for fun? Spend time with my family biking, hiking, and exploring new areas.

If you strive to shop local and planet friendly there is a store you need to discover. It’s called The Refillery, and it’s located in the Grand Traverse Commons Mercato. It’s been lovingly brought to life by owner Sarah Lange. The concept is refilling your own container in products for personal care, household cleaning and even laundry detergent. In personal care Sarah has everything from a dedicated baby line, to unscented skincare, lotions, body washes, all the way to toothpaste powder. All have organic components, no synthetics, no parabens, etc. She sources as much as she can from Michigan. “It was a personal journey first. I was seeking alternatives to plastic waste and as I researched, I realized refill stores are really starting to gain traction.” That’s not all you will find inside. With keeping a sustainability and eco-friendly theme, she has shelves full of hard-to-find earth conscious goods, including pet products. “Traverse City is so aware of this movement, I really think it will do well here,” says Sarah. We do too. The Mercato, 800 Cottageview Dr, Suite 10 refillerytc.com

The phrase “timing is everything” is how the popular downstate chain of The Big Salad is making its way to Front Street. It’s been almost two years bringing this plan to fruition. When Ben Jackson and Nate Blessing began talking with Grosse Pointe based founder John Bornoty, Ben and Nate said, “We knew we had to be on Front Street in Traverse City.” The top spot they snagged is in the old Yen Yoga building. “It’s been worth the wait and the right opportunity came along,” they said. The chain is famous for its build-your-own salads, signature fresh salads, soups and smoothies. Nate was introduced to the chain when he worked in Detroit. Now the business partners he met are betting that their backgrounds in finance, accounting, and operations will make for a winning combination. Hoping The Big Salad will make it big in Traverse city as much as it is downstate. 322 E Front St. mybigsalad.com

You are what you eat! Even though local physician Dr. Satya Pillay studied medicine, he didn’t learn how food affects the body. “I was eating all the wrong things until I adopted my wife’s plant-based diet, and then I lost 55 pounds!” Satya said. This was the catalyst for opening a café with a plant-based kitchen, named Zest! “We really felt like we could give the community something different,” says Saya’s wife, Tarah. Being Traverse City natives, they know the market. Tarah had been a vegetarian and says “the last thing I gave up was fish!” But for the last 3 years she’s been a plant based true vegan. “It opens up your tastebuds, and the true flavor of food comes through. We are very creative with spices and we fine-tuned some of our favorite recipes.” It doesn’t hurt that Satya’s heritage is from India, where some of the most mouthwatering flavors were born! The menu is 100% vegan with smoothies, salads, acai bowls and much more. We can’t wait to try the Bollywood Burrito! 439 East Front St. zesttc.com

Give in to tantalizing tacos, and mouthwatering margaritas. The 40-foot bar is the hippest new bar intown. As they boast on the sign out front, Tacos – Tequila – Whiskey. The laid-back menu highlights its build-your-own tacos. To dip your chips, they have rockin’ guac and ooey gooey cheesy quesos. Not forgetting the staple of Mexican street corn. All are brought to your table in casual fare style. To wash down all this deliciousness is an array of killer cocktails to try that they are just as famous for. It may be new to us, but the buzz from the downstate and Ohio locations is “people love to work here, eat here, drink here and party here.” It’s a ‘wicked good eats’ we all need to discover. De nada! (you’re welcome). Barrio 305 W Front St, Traverse City barrio-tacos.com

HOME GROWN & with M22
Local
125 E. Front St. Traverse City MI, 49684 m22.com
The M22 corporate team
We know it’s not just a road sign. But can you explain to our readers what M22 really signifies? M22 is a symbol that celebrates natural wonders such as lakes, beaches, dunes, forests, and a connection with community. It’s the feeling you’d get when you realize there is no other place you would rather be. When you see someone wearing the M22 logo, share a smile, and know that you have a mutual connection for love for nature, connection, and adventure. How long has M22 been in business now? M22 was founded in 2004. Give us the short version of how it began. Our passion for kiteboarding was getting the attention of locals and businesses in the area. As luck would have it, Traverse Magazine did an interview and photo shoot with the us for a story on kiteboarding. Keegan happened to be wearing one of our short-run M22 shirts that we made for our kiteboarding friends. From there, the interest was sparked. The symbolism that we, and so many of us love, was inspired-by the M22 logo. We slowly, realized it created a connection to our freshwater paradise and all that it represents. You just expanded to a second building on Front Street. What does this mean for you? It means M22 is growing! By permanently securing our building and expanding into the additional retail space, we are able to add more office space for our growing creative and management team, and to provide a more comfortable customer experience. You recently kicked off M22 Microadventures with a book and a card set. How did that come about? We listen to our customers, and they constantly ask us “what should we do up here?” So instead of scribbling a suggestion on paper, we created a well thought out and organized list of various easy adventures anyone can do. Now when someone asks us that question our sales staff can direct them to 40 different options! What do you attribute to your success? We have attracted a passionate team of hard workers that design and sell great products. Matt and Keegan Myers inside the Front St. M22 expanded store space.

We are beyond blessed
that Ludington based photographer Todd Reed, and his son Brad shared a vision to partner with us over 6 years ago. Team Reed have been such an integral part of our success with Baylife Magazine. Each issue we can always guarantee you will be blown away by their ‘Northern Encounter’ visual page. We have been so lucky they trusted us to feature their work in many photo gallery issues. Their breathtaking photo’s capture the raw beauty of our home and why it is called Pure Michigan. Because of this special relationship, our magazine covets coffee tables, just like their many books have for years. Todd’s career just hit a half century milestone. To document his epic life in pictures Team Reed worked on a labor of love to produce a limitededition spectacular book; “Todd Reed 50 years Seeing Michigan Through a Lens.” This monumental 383-page (heavy) book is a journey through Todd’s career that began in 1970. It follows his early years to college, to becoming a journalist, a coast guard graduate and eventually fulling his dream of becoming a full-time photographer and opening his own studio. Todd is one of the kindest and most genuine people you will ever meet. He sent this book as a gift, and personally signed it. When we suggested we do a feature, we had no clue what we signed up for! How do you choose from hundreds of photographs? So, this is just a little teaser. 114 W. Ludington Ave., Ludington 231-843-0777 toddandbradreed.com

A Sunrise Surprise!
by Tyler Leipprandt of Michigan Sky Media The Cherry Festival was full of surprises for the Michigan Sky Media family this year. As recent transplants to Traverse City, we had only experienced the Air Show before. This year, we watched a few bands, watched a few Ultimate Air Dogs jump 28 feet through the air, zipped around at the carnival, and got to see this hot air balloon gracefully float over Traverse City at sunrise. I can guarantee you that I will be taking a photo from the basket of the hot air balloon real quickly in the near future!

CHIC
Shiplap. Rustic. Decor. Deep, wide kitchen sinks. Reclaimed
wood. Sliding barn doors. Large cozy furniture. These all describe farmhouse chic design elements, which are seemingly everywhere you look these days. Thank you to Chip and Joanna Gaines with their HGTV’s “Fixer Upper” and Magnolia Brand. Also dozens of pages of farmhouse home design on Houzz, Pinterest, it’s truly a design style that has taken the world by storm. How to incorporate in your home? One of the most popular ways to showcase farmhouse decor in a kitchen is with a deep farmhouse sink, open-storage shelving, wood plank floors, and other elements like burlap and large glass jars are reminiscent of the farmhouse home.

A farmhouse living room is meant to evoke a feeling of coziness and comfort. It’s typical to find exposed wooden beams, reclaimed barn doors, natural wood and stone, and comforting colors including greys, pinks, and neutrals. You have no shortage of ways to make your home farmhouse chic. If you combine elements of vintage decor (including old-school kitchen appliances and metallic lighting fixtures throughout your home) with comfortable, cozy, natural colors and rustic decor, your home updates to a sophisticated and charming mecca.

a Cottage
REBORN WRITTEN BY BRITTANY DARGA PHOTOGRAPHY BY JAQUELINE SOUTHBY
ONE STEP INSIDE this North Lake
Leelanau house and it is so easy to feel right at home. It embodies everything Northern Michigan has to offer – swimming, boating, tubing, paddle boarding, lying in a hammock by day; bonfires, grilling, and good company by night. “We wanted a new home that feels like a cottage. We wanted it to be cozy and welcoming… not pristine and stuffy,” the home owner said. “It’s made for family.”
The home owners bought the property north of Leland about 20 years ago. At the time a 1970s era cottage was on the beautiful property, and about three years ago the couple enlisted MAC Custom Homes of Traverse City to design and build a new home. “We loved that cottage,” they said. “It holds a lot of memories. But it was time to build something new.”
BECAUSE THE FAMILY loved the
cottage so much, a lot of the same layout was kept the same. From the main entrance, guests can immediately see a view of the blue-green lake that runs 21 miles through the middle of the Leelanau Peninsula. The living area is in the same location as the original cottage and boasts a tall, stone wood-burning fireplace with a cement mantle. A cozy couch, soft chairs, and a stool big enough for board games surround the fireplace and the TV. A built-in book shelf is on the right side of the fireplace, which makes the home feel all the more welcoming. White shiplap walls border the space, with white oak floors at guest’s feet. The same shiplap is found on the ceiling with wooden exposed beams leading all the way to the kitchen. Places to snuggle up and read a book or take a nap are plentiful in this home. The first, a reading nook and small charming door underneath the stairs, can be noticed in the entry way. “There are lots of things in mind in this home for little people who aren’t here yet,” laughs the home owner, who hints at the possibility of future grandchildren. To the right of the entry way is one of the family’s “puzzle tables” with photos of family around it and a wet bar on one side. “Our family loves puzzles,” the home owner said, and any person can tell from the halffinished puzzles, as well as framed puzzles throughout the home. A built-in table that will fold out is here too, and it is primarily used for puzzles.

THE IMPRESSIVE KITCHEN is made for lots
of family guests. Its walnut island contrasts perfectly with the white metro quartz countertops. The white cabinets and drawers, coordinate with the white shiplap walls. The six-burner stove top and the white basin sink give the kitchen a smooth, classy look. Perhaps the most notable part of the kitchen is the giant window that opens up to the screened in porch. From here, you can not only see the lake, but hear the waves swooshing to the shore. “This window is one of my favorite parts of the house,” the home owner said. “You not only get to see the lake, you get to hear it too.” Wooden doors that were original to the cottage lead to the porches. The screened in porch that is through the giant window off the kitchen is used primarily for the dining space. On the other side, off the living area, is what the family calls a “reading porch.” This is screened in as well, and has plenty of comfortable places to sit while staying warm next to a fireplace if necessary. Both of these porches have storm windows that can be put down during the colder months. Nestled in between these two porches, is a completely outdoor porch space, with Adirondack chairs to enjoy the sun during the day, or a drink in the evening. Off the kitchen is a large walk-in pantry with not only plenty of shelves, but also counterspace for meal preparation. On the other side of the pantry is a laundry room with two sets of washers and dryers. “When people stay here, I want them to feel like they can do their own laundry,” the home owner said.
OUTSIDE OF THESE ROOMS is a hallway with the first guest
bedroom with ensuite bathroom. Each guest room has its own unique style and this one has white and teal colors, contrasted with white board and batten walls, wood floors and recovered furniture to give it a lake and cabin feel. Across from this bedroom is a half bathroom with colorful hand painted pinecones lining the border. The homeowner painted these, and also made many items in the home including a lot of the curtains. One the other end of the lower level is the master suite, which has a nice view of the lake but also curtains for privacy. A blue and white striped rug lays that over the wood floor, along with a white comforter and blue-gray shiplap walls to give the room a nautical feel. Small rectangle windows close to the ceiling make the room feel nice and bright. The bathroom has a double vanity, and a sizeable white tile shower and free-standing bathtub, with checkered painted fur wood floors. Walk upstairs from the main stairway and there is a living area that can be closed off with a pocket door. “We wanted guests to feel like they have their own space,” the home owners said. Windows that open are on one wall so the room can feel airy.
CLIMB UP THREE MORE STEPS and guests enter a
hallway that is reminiscent of time spent in Northern Michigan, with canvas and tile artwork (tiles made by Sporck Tileart in Leland) of different places in Leelanau County, as well as artwork from various local shops. Also, in the hallway and throughout the home are framed puzzles. “We are proud of them,” the home owner said. “Plus, when you look at them you recall the memories of when you worked on it together.” Each of the four guest rooms here have its own flair. All rooms have their own sink and built-in shelf for toiletries, which definitely gives guests a feeling of being at camp. Each bedroom also has a numbered towel. “Towels always get mixed up and they create so much laundry,” the home owner said. “With numbered towels that go to each room, there’s less confusion and less laundry.” The first guest room guests will come to is referred to as the bunk room because of its three twin sized bunks. Each bed in this room as its own reading light above it. Next is the “red, white, and blue” room, complete with American flag, matching bedding, and a framed puzzle of all the United States presidents.
ACROSS from these two rooms is the “boys” bathroom with a
noticeable blue theme throughout, a double basin sink, and a single stall shower and unique yellow light fixtures. Down the hall is the “girls” bathroom, complete with three separate dark pink wash stands, yellow flooring, a shower stall, and a tub. The third upstairs guest room has a pink theme, and the fourth has colors of the rainbow throughout the bedding, rugs, and wall décor. Each of these rooms and its own sink as well. The fifth bedroom upstairs has three twin beds – perfect for kids. Above the garage is a wide-open space, used for a sewing and exercise room right now.
AUG/SEPT 2021 | BAYLIFE MAGAZINE

ONE OF THE MOST notable
rooms upstairs is the “sleeping” porch. The porch is screened in and has custom made windows that fold up. The sounds and breeze from the lake can easily lull a person to sleep here. “This is the absolute perfect place to nap,” the home owner said. The porch has a small bed and porch swing. On top of this porch is one of the home owner’s favorite details – a copper flying pig weathervane. The flying pig is an icon of Cincinnati, which was once called “Porkopolis” because of the pork packing industry that was once there. Many pig statues can now be seen throughout the city. The home owners wanted to create a home that feels comfortable. “I almost feel like I should walk in a spill a drink just so people know it was created to truly be a home that’s meant to be lived in,” the home owner laughs. “I don’t want it to feel too fancy.” And the home was created for family. “This home is where all of our family comes together,” the home owner said. “We wanted something old fashioned, yet new. Something fun, relaxing, and enjoyable.”
