Life is sweet

All Is GOOD Eighth St. near Garfield Ave is becoming a foodie haven. First, their world was rocked with Oakwood Proper Burgers, and now, coming soon, a second Common Good Bakery location. “We have outgrown our space at 14th street,” says owner Jason Gollan. So after totally tantalizing tastebuds on the West side since opening in 2017, they are advancing east. With nearly 3,200 square feet, it’s a good move to develop their heavenly goodness. “We’re planning on putting in a bakery and kitchen and expanding what we do in terms of food,” says Jason. The name may be Common Good, but there is nothing common about the deliciousness they serve up—breakfast sandwiches to jump start your day, fresh French peasant bread paninis to die for, soups and salads for the carb conscious, and indulgently sweet goodies too. MAR/APRIL 2022 | BAYLIFE MAGAZINE

Here’s the scoop—homemade ice cream is coming to the west side (formerly Wares Bros) with Buchan’s West Bay. The handcrafted ice cream from Blueberry Hill on Old Mission Peninsula has been a favorite for years. Owners Ben and Lori Buchan are fifth generation farmers, but as Lori explains, “Farming is really hard work, which doesn’t bother me, but there are so many things you can’t control like the weather, so my plan B was ice cream. I didn’t plan on opening ice cream shops; my son thinks they’re a good idea.” A few years ago, she opened Scoops 22 in Suttons Bay. “It was familiar to me; I grew up there. The store used to be my uncle’s. This building is familiar too—after sixth grade we moved to Traverse City and we lived right behind here.” Her first task is new equipment, fresh paint, and a little sweat equity. Lori also makes the point she’s not competing with Moomers. “They are dairy farmers, and we are fruit farmers. Most of the fruit in our ice cream comes right from our farm. It’s Buchan good!” Buchan’s West Bay, 13000 S W Bayshore Dr., Traverse City
