Our beautiful Northern Michigan never disappoints. When all else fails, the calm of nature prevails with the greenest, lush trees, the spectacular sand dunes of Sleeping Bear towering over blazing blue turquoise hues of Lake Michigan, and our dazzling east and west Grand Traverse Bays. This is our home. How lucky are we? Thousands of Pure Michigan lovers vacation here, dreaming to create this pristine life someday. Inflation and high gas prices begone! The great outdoors and the back-to-basics beckon as we live and revel in our backyard. You originally joined United Way ofin Central Iowa in Des Moines. Tell us your journey to Traverse City. My wife and I are both from small towns. When our daughter was born, we set out to find a spot for us to put down roots while I continued working for a nonprofit. Both of my parents are pastors, so I grew up watching them serve others. I wanted the opportunity to help all those seeking a better life and to make the world a bit better. When the opportunity for us to relocate to northwest Michigan arose, we jumped at it. My wife spent her childhood summers visiting family in the region and we both love the outdoors. Northwest Michigan really is a special place— — the people, the donors, the advocates, the volunteers are all truly incredible and what makes this region so unique. What is the mission of United Way in our community? To mobilize the caring power of the region for good. Each day to LIVE UNITED and to help those in crisis. It takes many partnerships with organizations, countless advocates, volunteers, and donors coming together to solve the toughest issues facing our region. We are here to work UNITED to make this region the best place for everyone and give us all the chance to thrive — especially those who need us most. Are there any words of wisdom you live by? Surround yourself with people smarter than you. What three words best describe you? I hope to live a life that exemplifies compassion, humility, and an adventurous spirit. Tell us something that would surprise us about you? I grew up singing. I competitively sang and went to college on a vocal scholarship. I’ve been in multiple musicals, studied opera, sang in a traveling gospel choir and traveled coast to coast giving performances with different ensembles. What is one thing you have checked off your bucket list? Growing up in Iowa around the caucuses, I loved politics and seeing all the presidential candidates; which made me want to spend time in Washington, DC. Early in my career I was able to work at the White House and on Capitol Hill, which was an incredible and humbling experience.

Passing the Torch A milestone is happening at ReynoldsJonkhoff Funeral Home. Coconut Cauliflower Coconut Cauliflower Ingredients
1 recipe Coconut Lime Broth 1 recipe Sesame Brittle 8 oz cauliflower florets 8 oz brussels sprouts, halved Mae Poi to taste
Instructions
Heat a saucepan of neutral oil to approximately 350 degrees. Flash fry cauliflower and Brussels sprouts until golden, approximately 3-5 minutes. Strain, then season with salt and pepper. To serve: place a ladle of the coconut lime broth in the bottom of the dish. Top with cauliflower and Brussels sprouts. Drizzle with Mae Poi and top with sesame brittle.

8 oz coconut milk 2 oz crème de coconut 2 limes, juiced 1 stalk lemongrass 1 oz ginger ¼ cup shallots, minced
Instructions
Hit lemongrass several times along the length with the back of a chef knife, set aside. Sauté the shallots in a couple tablespoons oil until translucent. Add the rest of the ingredients and cook over medium heat until flavors combine, approximately 25-30 minutes.

Toast sesame seeds in a sauté pan over low heat until lightly browned, set aside. Combine water, sesame oil, and sugar in a saucepan. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat, but do not stir. Wait for the mixture to become golden brown. Fold in the sesame seeds and spread thinly on greased parchment paper. Cool, then break into pieces.

The Tasting Room Last summer, we featured soon-to-be-opening restaurant The Tasting Room. The décor was elegant chic and featured a spectacular bar for cocktails, a wood-fired pizza oven imported from Italy, an indoor/outdoor space with a patio and fireplace overlooking the Boardman River; we had no doubt that this would be the newest hottest spot in Traverse City. We weren’t wrong, but as weeks turned into months for their long-awaited liquor license, they were unable to make their big splash onto the scene. Instead for almost a year they’ve got by on just their food menu paired with their delicious mocktails. Some locals mistakenly think it is a “tasting room” only for wine and liquor that doesn’t serve food—all this time missing out on mouthwatering plates of delectable deliciousness. While you were patiently waiting for tables at busy familiar places, The Tasting Room has been perfecting every recipe on their menu, anticipating your arrival. We guarantee your taste buds will not be disappointed. We dined here for a sampling recently and invited along die-hard local foodies. We ordered almost everything on the menu that Chef Steve Blalock created from scratch. Our impressive array of “shareables” included ahi tuna served with homemade warm wonton strips. The presentation alone is a feast for the eyes. Speaking of, we also dived into a giant, succulent tiger shrimp cocktail. “Best we have ever eaten,” were the takeaway 24

We also partook in nibbling prosciutto-wrapped dates filled with goat cheese, house-made blackened chicken egg rolls, and, not forgetting our veggies, tried a modern take on Brussels sprouts, roasted with butternut squash, bacon, walnuts and covered in a sweet whiskey glaze! How do you follow that? With their one-of-akind plethora of wood-fired oven pizzas: spicy Greek, pesto chicken, or lobster to name a few. You can order traditional pepperoni and cheese but when it’s called The Tasting Room, it begs for you to experience a food adventure. Becky Thatcher Designs are the exquisite hand-crafted jewelry that Becky has been curating for almost four decades. Her stores in Glen Arbor, Leland, and Traverse City showcase spectacular gemstones from all around the world.

Becky’s love for making jewelry began with her exploring the beach during summers at her parents’ cottage in Northern Michigan. Her other love was horses, which led her to horse country: Middleburg, VA. But she continued making jewelry and worked the circuit of craft shows. “At one point in my life, I had to choose horses or jewelry…there was no way I could do both as well as I would need to.” The inception for a store in Glen Arbor was part of a ten-year plan to return to the area. That meant she had to bring a job with her, as there weren’t job prospects at that time. She forged her own way, purchasing a cottage as her flagship store that opened in 1983. Tell us about your horses. “Horses had to wait…finally making the Mongolian trek, 230 miles up to and along the Siberian border was a dream come true. After that trip, life didn’t quite feel complete without a horse in it. My sister and I were still two girls longing for ponies after 50...so my sister got a loan from my dad (which she paid back), and we acquired two of the best Icelandic ponies we could have dreamed of. Endurance riding was our goal, and we have explored much of our neighboring countryside and joined organized rides across the state.” What keeps you inspired? “Incorporating the ideas behind the jewelry, such as the awe and appreciation of our forests and its fauna, with jewelry lines like The Forest Floor Impressions and The Endangered Insects Collections.”

summer breezes into Traverse City, it’stime to spend a day at our “almost” tropical island—Power Island is a rite of passage for boaters. It’s a day where your only worry in life is running low on ice. It’s our playground in the middle of West Grand Traverse Bay, where the aqua blue waters mirror the Caribbean. Except ours is fresh and unsalted and close by with no passport needed. On a blue-skied, sizzling day, it’s home to hundreds of steadfast anchors holding boats of all shapes and sizes firmly on parade, people soaking up the sun, relaxing, lounging, floating, or wading (preferably with an adult beverage), kids running along the beach, swimming, splashing, and playfully screaming, dogs barking hello, grills smoking, and above all, the sound of laughter. There are kayaks, jet skis, and paddleboarders too, all playing nicely and carving out their own little slice of paradise. If you’re a bona fide TC native, you still might call it Marion Island or even before that, Ford Island, as in Henry Ford. And did you also know the island is equipped with a 24-hour live-in park ranger who keeps a watchful eye from his lookout perch?

The island was first settled by Native Americans.

The names Hawk Island and Eagle Island stick because of bald eagles and crows inhabiting the island.

The island also is becoming known Hog Island because of hogs being brought to feast.
1860
The United States Government officially names it Harbor Island.
1872
The Hall family of Ionia purchases the island. Honoring their youngest daughter with the new name Marion Island. At age 38, Marion Hall Fowler becomes owner of the island.
1917
Henry Ford buys the island from Hall and changes the name to Ford Island. Henry Ford supposedly brought famous friends to party, including Harvey S. Firestone, Thomas Edison, Babe Ruth, Woodrow Wilson, Warren G. Harding, and Theodore Roosevelt.
1944
The island is sold to the Rennies of the Rennie Oil Company and was renamed to Rennie Island.
1970s
Developers targeted the island and the Power family put up $250,000 to help the county purchase and protect it.
1987
The island is given to Grand Traverse County and becomes a public park. The island was named to Power Island after Eugene Power, a Traverse City native and frequent visitor to the island.

ISLAND New this year: Power Island now has ten campsites and Basset Island has the original five.
Plan an unforgettable night under the stars. You can pre plan and reserve your campsite adventure online. The camp sites are described as “rustic,” but they do have bathrooms available. Here are a few other things to keep in mind. Drinking water: No drinking water is available on Bassett Island. The closest water location is the picnic area on Power Island, about a mile from your campsite. Many campers take water from the mainland or fill their containers at the picnic area prior to setting up camp. Campsites: These sites are assigned and will be listed on your permit. Please use the fire pit area that is established on the site. Each site has its own picnic table, cooking grill, and campfire circle. There are maintained restrooms servicing the island. Check-In/Check-Out: Check-in/out time is noon. Pets: All pets must be always leashed and under the control of the owners. Litter: There is no trash dump on the islands. ummer is finally here! After so many cold winter days, we all look forward to sunshine, warmth and plenty of outdoor activities; making a new outdoor kitchen the perfect home addition for spring and summer entertaining. Beauty is important, but function should be the first consideration when planning your outdoor entertainment space. Key components are:

#1 The grill, of course! Weber is still the most popular brand, but there are many others on the market. If your grill is going to be built into cabinetry or a structure you want to ensure that you are selecting a high-quality model that will last for many years. Wolf offers high quality grills in many sizes to accommodate any outdoor kitchen design. Take the time to research some of the additional features that you might like so they can be planned for in your design. For example, if you choose a rotisserie feature, power will be required to run the motor. #2 Outdoor refrigeration. Whether it is for additional beverage storage or to house food supplies, a double drawer unit is a convenience that I highly recommend. It will be much more effective than a standard beverage cooler. #3 Last, but not least, is a sink. Let’s admit it, most grill masters are pretty messy, with BBQ sauce going everywhere. The ability to clean up without having to haul soapy water from the house is a huge convenience. Of course, there are always plenty of extras! Popular items are wood fired pizza ovens, ice makers, and the latest innovations such as the Big Green Egg charcoal grill. Do your homework when designing your outdoor kitchen to make sure that you have everything your need for perfect barbecues. Once you have your design down, material selection is pretty standard, with wood and stone being the most popular. Stainless cabinetry will withstand Northern

ON THE OUTSIDE,
the home looks deceivingly contemporary with statuesque black metal industrial double doors paned with classic clear glass. It hides the façade of the epic historical journey inside. But first is a big furry friendly hello from the home’s official greeter, Zoe the dog. Upon entering, gleaming through a wall of windows, the captivating panorama of east Grand Traverse Bay dazzles. High above are vast wooden ceilings with steadfast strong beams that navigate you to the soaring height of the whitewashed stone brick fireplace in the living room. Wood and metal prevail throughout, like the steel cart from the closed down Michigan Maple Block Company, now fitted with a top and converted to a coffee table. Gazing around, the vintage décor beckons. Peppered in are abstract sustainable art sculptures created by Northport artist Jesse Hickman. “Most have a nautical theme. I have been a collector of his work for over 15 years.”
WITH THE OPEN FLOW CONCEPT,
you glide into the kitchen, framed with windows still maximizing the aqua blue bay view. The new commissioned cabinets fitted with metal and siltstone counters are simple, elegant, and practical. But surrounded by the farmhouse style of 1800s French peasant additions, they masterfully become drenched in character and texture. Old France hangs on the wall from long forgotten storefronts alongside brass jugs and kettles from a past with no running water. They dangle above butcher block chests and abandoned woodshop worktables. Like time stood still, the fluidity of modern-day form and function and old-world Europe mesh to perfection.
From floor to ceiling, an array of European architectural riches adorns the space, primarily from France and Belgium. Every entryway is majestic with dramatic reclaimed doors standing guard, gothic wood laden with embellished metal casting. Many originate from castles, churches, and centuries-old stone buildings. Oh, the stories they could tell, from endless crusades in history, religious rebellions, to generations of wealth and family follies. Other doorways boast audacious heavy black steel and glass, carefully hung with made to order fabricated frames. Previous window shutters now serve as closet doors and cover single doorways in a unique way to dress them up. “I believe doors should be art,” says the homeowner.

OF ALL THE ORNATE DOORWAYS,
the magnificent double carriage doors meticulously placed to be the guardians of the wine cellar are the coup de grâce: monumental in size and breed, they originate from the Dodge Mansion, also known as the Rose Garden in Detroit. Going inward, you are transported to Provence, the wine country of France, by a glorious wine cellar atmosphere. A tall order, considering this room before was a man cave dedicated to the University of Michigan with a huge blue M on the wall.

IN THE MASTER BEDROOM, a palatial antique steel gate from France accentuates the wall. It metamorphosizes a classic headboard and is elaborate next to the simple crisp white linens. “Never buy a headboard when you can make one with gates or shutters.” Once again, the room is flanked by the blue vista of the bay outside.

IN THE WALKOUT LOWER LEVEL, there is a play on design
with one room decked out as a rugged up north cabin. The facing room is all old Americana, with a historic prominent framed American flag on display. Also on this lower level are guest bedrooms molded to harmonize the home’s theme.

ON SUCH AN OPULENT SCALE, inside and outside, this home
solidifies that the devil undeniably is in the details! Fragments of yesteryear have been given new life and a renewed purpose. They are interictally woven into the home between treasured keepsakes, original painted canvases, and cherished reminders of a loved one. I asked the homeowner what they name the overall design. “I’d say eclectic, but I don’t really like to put a label on it or put in in a box. If you really love something, you can always make it work somewhere.” It’s wonderful we have these photographs to linger over as a reference. On one visit alone, it was impossible to take everything in, because it had absolutely stirred our inner amateur designer mode to kick in. Hot Tips: Measure your space before you shop. Don’t try to do it all at once; these were collected over many years. And, as you go forth delving into these solid ancient things, they NEED to be hung by professionals. They didn’t come from homes with 2 by 4s and drywall. Have fun! 60
