LETTER FROM THE
editor
Aaron and Kristy Kurjan, Tom and Teri Gorsline
Greetings from Mt. Holiday
and a toast to you, our readers! We decided to gather at one of our favorite local ski spots, Mt. Holiday, because these slopes are where we spend most of our free time in the winter months. Our kids are on Mt. Holiday’s downhill race team, which requires many hours standing on the slopes cheering. And as any Northern Michigan native would tell you, good footwear is key to a happy winter! That is why a warm pair of boots are my go-to winter necessities (see page 30 for some stylish yet practical suggestions). When we are not on the hill, we are working hard to bring you the best magazine possible. As promised, the BayLife team is stepping it up in 2019. We are striving to be bigger and better, while continuing to put a bright spotlight on the best of Northern Michigan. Look for new voices, stunning photography, and excellent content. As always, we will keep supporting the local people, stores, and organizations whose continued determination make our region thrive. We love our community and are always looking at ways to give back. In this issue, we highlight The Celebrity Dream Room Classic event held at Golden Fowler on February 8th to benefit Child & Family Services of Northwestern Michigan. Our fabulous publisher, Teri Gorsline, is one of the local celebrities who was chosen to create a “dream room” for the event. We can’t wait to see what she comes up with, so get your tickets now to support this great cause… And, vote for Teri’s dream room! I look forward to seeing you there!

I would like to raise a glass to one of our newest writers, Amanda Renkiewicz, who will be writing the CHEERS column going forward. She plans to highlight local libations you will not want to miss. This girl knows her drinks, and is excited to share her favorite watering holes with impressive cocktail lists, starting with Northern Latitudes Distillery in the village of Lake Leelanau. There is immense beauty in the winter landscape, and the breathtaking photography of John McCormick (starting on page 32) captures it perfectly. We chose his stunning Frankfort lighthouse image for our Holiday 2018 issue and couldn’t resist asking him back to be a part of our winter photography feature. It has been an honor to be able to highlight his work: from the majestic Mackinac Island Bridge cover shot, to the ten-page spread with gorgeous images taken throughout Michigan. His beautiful work reminds us all of how lucky we are to spend our winters, and our years, in Northern Michigan surrounded by incredible, unique beauty. No doubt, John McCormick possesses a talent that speaks for itself! I hope you are able to find a moment to snuggle up by the fire and enjoy this issue of BayLife Magazine. May the start of 2019 bring you and your family love, laughter and lots of winter fun! Cheers to a New Year… Now, let’s hit the slopes!

— LIFE’S GRAND ADVENTURE —
AN ABUNDANCE OF OPPORTUNITY Expanding Bryan’s winemaking business
“Every day, we get to deal with a living product. It’s our responsibility to respond to what we are given, keep it safe, make it the best it can be.”
20,000
Cases of wine & cider produced annually.
First fruits: Riesling grapes from Old Mission Peninsula in 2004.
Winemaking is considered a delicate balance of science and art.
When Bryan Ulbrich took a part-time job in a winery during grad school simply to pay his bills, he never imagined that it would lead him to where he is now: a respected winemaker running Left Foot Charley Winery, a thriving business in Traverse City. Bryan’s adventure truly began to unfold in 2004 when he and his wife, Jennifer, secured their first order of Riesling grapes and produced 170 cases of wine. Left Foot Charley now produces more than 20,000 cases of wine and cider. So, West Shore Bank helped them locate and finance a new warehouse, increasing their efficiency and setting them up well for future growth. West Shore Bank. For Life’s Grand Adventure.
“These barrels are my grand adventure.” Bryan Ulbrich
When I visited Bryan in The Barrel Room and saw that this popular tasting room was being taken over by Left Foot Charley’s expanding inventory, I knew how important additional warehouse space would be. As a community bank, West Shore Bank doesn’t rely on measuring sticks and national models. We get to know our clients personally and find creative ways to help them grow and thrive. Enjoying Family Time - Kara and Scott Schulz with their kids from left to right Madelynn, Charlise and Remington
SCOTT SCHULZ ORTHODONTIST, OWNER SCHULZ ORTHODONTICS When did you know you wanted to be an Orthodontist? I had braces in high school, and I had a great experience. I loved science and always wanted to pursue a medical degree. My junior year of college, after shadowing medical doctors, my orthodontist asked me “Why not go into orthodontics?” I shadowed him and realized I loved the energy and fun environment of an ortho office working with kids and young adults. I could combine my love of medical science with working with my hands and really knowing my patients. My mind was set. 20
WINTER 2019 | BAYLIFE MAGAZINE
What was your plan B if it didn’t work-out? I was a biochemist at Kellogg’s during college breaks, and I considered sticking with it. It was fun developing new cereals and working in the food industry.
What is something that we would be surprised to know about you? Kara and I go on a music cruise every year. I love live music and meeting new people. It’s a blast with non-stop entertainment and people from every walk of life.
What do you love most about your profession? I love the transformation adults and children receive through braces or Invisalign that really brings out their personality. Giving someone the confidence to smile with pride is so rewarding. Getting to know my patients during the process makes it all the better.
Where were you born? Cleveland, OH but I grew up in Battle Creek, MI
What are 3 words that best describe you? Energetic, hard-working, loyal Who is your hero? My mother. Raising four kids, working fulltime, always being supportive and loving everyone around her. She fights for social justice and keeps our family closely tied together. She is amazing.
Tell us what your kids would tell us about you? They would probably say I am strict and I make them do chores. But I always find time to dance, play games, snuggle and go camping with them. Is there a quote or words of wisdom you live by? Work hard, play hard If you could have a superpower what would it be? To slow down time. I would love to slow the years and enjoy more family time.

Northern Latitudes Distillery 112 E. Philip Street Lake Leelanau, MI
www.northernlatitudesdistillery.com Like the North Star directing weary travelers to their final destination, Northern Latitudes Distillery is a bright spot for visitors, especially in the chilly months of winter. Owned by Mark and Mandy Moseler, Northern Latitudes first opened in 2012. Boasting an impressive list of bourbons, rums, vodkas, liqueurs and more, the handcrafted small batch distillery uses Michigan’s bountiful agricultural products to stay as local as possible.
Northern Latitudes Distillery owners, Mark and Mandy Moseler, with her parents Ginny and Dave.
The tasting room, located on M‑204 in the village of Lake Leelanau, is as unique as the spirits that are created on-site. From the slab wood beams, to the massive black ash bar tops, the room has that special “where the North begins” feeling. Free tastings, barware and gifts items, a delightfully knowledgeable staff, and a comfortable seating area make it an exceptional experience. With a cocktail list to satisfy everyone’s palate, the distillery also helps those who are weary of winter to spice up their day. Their Mocha Coffee is a reviving mix of Mackinac Island Fudge Chocolate Liqueur, hot chocolate, whipped cream, and cinnamon. The Cafe Saskanilla is a similar variation, with Saskatoon Berry Liqueur and French vanilla creamer. Interested in something more fruit forward? Ginny’s Famous Hot Grog, a fourth-generation family recipe, has your choice of Deer Camp Straight Bourbon Whiskey or Manitou Passage Gin, pineapple and cranberry juice, cloves, cinnamon, and brown sugar. The feeling in your fingers will soon return as you thaw out and relax into the buoyant ambiance of the venue. The term “family run” takes on new meaning with the Moseler bunch. “Both of my parents have worked with us from the beginning to get this distillery up and running. My mom has been our bartender up until this past spring and now she’s in charge of the new room that we call ‘the chamber.’ My dad has always been our lead ‘spirit guide’ at our tasting bar,” Mandy says. Mark’s parents were involved in the production end of the business and bottled and labeled thousands of bottles. Zoe, Mark and Mandy’s daughter, has been a part of everything, from gluing prohibition pictures on their bags to peeling lemons for limoncello. The fantastic staff is made up mostly of retirees: many retired teachers, a retired principal, a retired lawyer, a retired engineer, retired health care workers, a retired fire chief and more. “Great spirits and great employees are what have allowed Northern Latitudes Distillery to be here going into our seventh year!” the Moselers agree.

Be Mindful with Zenvelope Mindfulness is a concept we all strive for in our day to day lives, but sometimes the act of being present is difficult to achieve. Enter Zenvelope, a simple envelope with a big message. Zenvelope’s mission is to improve the daily lives of their customers by providing mindfulness tools and knowledge to help be more present. How is this goal achieved? The envelope is a mindfulness tool, not a cell phone case. It is a purposeful tool to help individuals let go of technology and reconnect with the world around them by placing their phone in the the envelope. Founder Kristy McDonald is passionate about helping people reach their full potential. A businesswoman, yoga instructor, and entrepreneur, she started consulting in mindfulness in 2015. For her, a large part of being “mindful” is disconnecting from her phone and she encourages others to do the same. “Life is amazing – the world is beautiful – and people are missing it by seeing the world through their devices,” says McDonald. “Devices and technology are amazing, but they’re lenses, and they don’t capture life as sweetly and completely as being engaged directly.” Zenvelope’s sleek look is actually a clever design: the red circle in the middle of the logo is symbolic of the power button on devices. The black circles are called an Enso: a sacred symbol in the Zen tradition. The meaning of the two symbols that combine to make the word Enso translate to “circle of togetherness”. www.zenvelope.life 30

“GRAND ISLAND ICE CAVES”
These ice cave photos were taken along the historic and beautiful Grand Island shoreline, part of Lake Superior. When Michigan has a cold winter, Munising Bay can freeze over, making it possible to cross the ice to the island. McCormick and his wife, Shelly (pictured), always check with the locals first for information regarding the ice conditions, and where to cross. "It's an amazing thing to see, ice curtains over 30 feet tall and hidden caves to find and explore. Ice cleats, snowshoes, or ice crampons are a must, along with a warm pair of boots,” says McCormick.

John McCormick has been interested in photography since he was a young boy. “My father had a German-made 35mm camera that he brought home from overseas that I was fascinated with,” he explains. “It was around 1982 when I purchased my first single-lens reflex camera and started shooting Michigan landscapes as a hobby.”

There is beauty in all of Michigan, but McCormick is drawn to Northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula. He especially enjoys shooting at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. To him, this area has everything a nature photographer could ask for: spectacular sunsets, sand dunes, pristine rivers and streams, beautiful waterfalls, rock formations and sandstone cliffs. Another subject he enjoys photographing are stunning lighthouses throughout the state. He expands, “I really enjoy shooting them in late autumn when the storms are blowing in off of the lakes, and in winter when freezing spray encases them with a beautiful coating of ice.” A lifelong Michigan resident, McCormick has been taking stunning photographs of nature and landscape for over 30 years. Married to his wife Shelly, they have three sons, a daughter-in-law, and two granddaughters. To view more of his work, visit www.michigannutphotography.com

THE LUXURY LOOK: VELVET Velvet is everywhere these days in fashion, accessories, and home decor. Why so popular? Because not only does velvet look beautiful, it is one of the softest fabrics available. Find the luxurious fabric as the main event on a bold colored sofa in a library or den. Incorporate the trend on smaller accent pieces throughout the home, on a small stool, a throw, or a pouf. This glamorous fabric isn’t just for high-end homes anymore… it is mainstream, baby! Many stores offer high-tech velvet options that are stain resistant, washable and lowmaintenance. Cozy up with velvet this winter!

PROJECT
HOME WITH ERIN SIMON
NEW
YEAR, N E W LY
ORGANIZED HOME
A
s most of us know, a home is more than just a house. It’s a place we feel warm, safe and comfortable. With our long Northern Michigan winters, it’s important to have a place that is cozy and calm. A cluttered space can prevent serenity and instead feel overwhelming and stressful. With the new year upon us, it’s the perfect time to tackle that clutter and give your home a fresh start. With a busy family, function is always important. One way I stay organized is having an entryway system that collects mail, school work, and bills. I start the clutter-free life before I even walk in the door. After grabbing the mail, I head straight to the recycling bin to quickly discard any junk mail, catalogs and flyers. Keeping only the important items helps clutter from building up, and it immediately eliminates half of the paper coming into the house. Bins, baskets and containers are a great way you can keep a home in order. Start in the mudroom with baskets for hats, gloves, shoes, and ski gear. Bins pepper my pantry holding snacks, baking items, and cooking supplies. When similar items are stored together, it’s easier to find them. The containers continue in the hall closet where medicines and first aid supplies are corralled for easy access.
Erin Simon is a declutter expert and owner of Clutter Funk home organizing service. She lives in Traverse City with her husband and two children. www.clutterfunk.com

TIPS
• Purge first, then organize. • Recycle or donate as much as possible. • Showcase the home décor you love, donate the rest. • When organizing closets, pull everything out and only put back in what you use. • The Women’s Resource Center and Father Fred are two great local donation options. • Don’t feel like you have to tackle everything at once, organizing takes time.

Parade of Homes award winning house designed and engineered by EETKO Builders
In a heavily wooded forest in Grand Traverse County, a striking
modern farmhouse sits like a jewel surrounded by endless natural beauty. The Parade of Homes build was completed by EETKO Builders founder Shaun Gober. EETKO, which stands for ‘Energy Efficient Turn Key Originals’, began as the brainchild of Shaun and his wife Crystal. “We wanted to build unique homes that have equally unique traits, from roof lines to floors, where each finish is specific to the design of that home,” Shaun explains. They became interested in the increasing popularity of the rustic style, and decided to try their hand at it for a stunning family home. The sizable build has 2100 square feet on the main level, with 2000 in the finished basement and another 460 in a bonus room above the garage. Containing five bedrooms, three and a half baths, and a two-car garage built with extra space, there is opportunity for entertaining to the maximum. With unique features and delightful details, the home exudes comfort, warmth, and style. The exterior of the home sets the tone immediately, with a long driveway leading to a manicured lawn with classic fieldstone landscaping. Harbor gray siding is accented by black windows and pillars. On top of the roof, a handmade copper flying heron serves as a glamorous weather vane. 54
WINTER 2019 | BAYLIFE MAGAZINE
As you open the front door,
an intricate tiled mosaic of a compass is laid out. The black, blue, white and yellow colors create a show stopping detail for visitors. The first look at the open interior is breathtaking, and designed to perfection. A large dining table with carved circle legs is paired with eclectic, light blue chairs. The room is set between the wide windows looking outside and a wrought iron staircase leading downstairs. At the head of the table is a white sliding barn door leading to the pantry. Inside, a small indoor herb garden is strategically placed at the window, and plenty of shelving and cabinetry allow for all of the necessities to feed a family or throw a dinner party.
Back in the main space, a beautiful kitchen serves as the
heart of the home. With trendy tiles put together in an artistic design for the backsplash, and a massive farmer’s sink, the design is both edgy and comforting. The white custom quartz countertops shine against the dark cabinets. Open wood shelving on both sides of a square window capture a sense of rustic chic. The island was made from two slabs of wood from a walnut tree in Leelanau County, and the result is true craftsmanship. Another unique feature is the handmade barn wood range hood. The material was repurposed from a local barn over a century old. Poised over a large gas range, the hood is an ode to nature with light wood accents against the darker sections.

Each bedroom is designed
with intention. In the master, hand crafted coffered ceilings are a shade of off-white, with navy blue paint in between. The walls have the same blue, while tall wainscotting breaks up the color and adds dimension. Can lights in the ceiling are perfectly placed, while floor to ceiling transom windows let in significant natural light. A 10x10 walk in closet allows for a plethora of organizational systems. Inside the master bath is another masterpiece. A freestanding tub, huge walk in shower with a rain head, and double sinks in the enormous vanity make it yet another show stopper. Distressed wood paneling continues the farmhouse feel, while the floor and ceiling tile are intricately designed with Classic Twenties SomerTile.

While most basements are disregarded or used simply for
storage, this home’s basement is, in a word, cool. Inspired by the 1920’s speakeasy style, Shaun and Crystal stepped back in time to design a fantastic space. A trip down the stairs reveals light blue shiplap with two matching glass windows. As pretty as it is, the real thrill comes from opening one of the windows that is actually a door, and slipping into a hidden billiard room and movie theater. Talk about impressing your guests! Shaun wanted to make this edgy space without increasing expenses, and the end result is a fantastic success. Back in the main basement area, more awaits to delight the visitor. As the pièce de résistance, a mammoth bar over fifteen feet long is ready to provide people with specialty cocktails. The dark mahogany wood sets the stage for a party, and liquor bottles on glass shelves are reflected back in the glass mirrored backing. The reflective, vertical material on the exterior of the bar adds a sleek appeal. Shaun built a speakeasy within an already spectacular home, and the effect is dazzling. For the lucky overnight guest, step just a few feet away to your spare bedroom and a bathroom with a massaging jet steam shower. The only difficulty of staying at this home would be leaving.
Shaun Gober, Owner of EETKO Builders
Shaun and Crystal’s ability to create a vision to help each customer imagine their new home helps spark new and ingenious ideas that are unique and personal to each build. From the compass in the entryway, to a gloriously appointed kitchen, and to the hidden billiard room, originality and creativity resonante in this thrilling family home, proving the EETKO mantra that “your imagination is the limit to what we can do”.
