Make Sure Your Holiday Giving is Wise Giving This is a critical time of year for fundraising charities. Many people make year-end gifts for tax reasons, or to extend the spirit of thanksgiving and generosity to those less fortunate. BBB offers a few DOs and DON’Ts when it comes to charity giving, both at holiday time and year-round. DON’T succumb to high-pressure, emotional pitches. Giving on the spot is never necessary, no matter how hard a telemarketer or door-to-door solicitor pushes it. The charity that needs your money today will welcome it just as much tomorrow…after you’ve had time to do your homework. DO check out the charity carefully. Make sure you feel comfortable with how your money will be spent. Don’t just take the word of someone else; even good friends may not have fully researched the charities they endorse. Go to www.give.org to verify that a charity meets BBB Wise Giving Alliance’s 20 Standards for Charity Accountability. DON’T assume that only “low overhead” matters. How much money a charity spends on the actual cause—as compared to how much goes toward fundraising and administration—is an important factor, but it’s not the whole story. A charity with impressive financial ratios could have other significant problems such as insufficient transparency, inadequate board activity or inaccurate appeals. DO be sure it’s the right charity. With so many charities in existence, their names can blur in a donor’s mind and similar-sounding organizations are common. Many phony charities purposefully choose a name that sounds familiar. Be sure you know which charity you’re supporting and that it’s not a case of mistaken identity. Also remember that not all soliciting groups are charities. Be sure to verify their tax-exempt status with the IRS at www.irs.gov. DON’T assume that the charity wants any item you donate. Worn out, unusable or unwanted donated goods cost charities millions of dollars each year because the organization has to bear the cost of tossing the unacceptable donation. If you have questions about an item’s acceptability, call the charity and ask. DO remember that unordered merchandise is free. If a charity sends you greeting cards, address labels or other merchandise with an appeal for donations, you are not obligated to pay for the items. These “free” items are funded out of the contributions received from donors. DON’T accept vague claims. Statements such as "all proceeds go to charity" or “your purchase will benefit charity” are too vague. Look for a disclosure that indicates the actual or estimated amount of the purchase that the charity will receive to fund its programs. DO consider easy text-to-give options. The BBB Mobile Giving Foundation makes it easy to give smaller donations (usually $10) to charities they have selected and monitor, including those providing relief to victims of natural disasters. Go to www.mobilegiving.org to find out more. Just remember that in times of natural disasters, text-to-give may not be the fastest way to get your donation to the charity of your choice. Donors can check out BBB Wise Giving Alliance evaluations on nationally soliciting charities for free at www.give.org. For more helpful information on this topic, read the articles on pages 31 and 34.

BBB Warns Players to Enjoy Pokemon GO…
with Caution
In just a few days, Pokemon GO became the most downloaded phone app in the U.S. earlier this year. The app, which uses mapping software to create a virtual reality game, is getting children and adults out and about in their neighborhoods to “catch” the game characters as they pop up on phone screens from various locations. Although the game can be a blast, BBB is warning players and parents to be aware of some nuances that go with GO. Expenses: It’s possible to play completely cost-free by winning “PokeCoins” (the app’s currency) through gameplay, but you can also purchase the coins through an inapp purchase. Privacy: In order to play the game, users must allow the app to access other applications, such as maps and camera. Many users sign in with a Google account, and that has caused some concerns about privacy. Malware: So far, the app is only available in the U.S., Australia and New Zealand, which has given cybercriminals an opportunity to capitalize on the demand. A malware version of the game has been found online; although no known infections have been reported. Users should only download the app through official app stores, not third-party sites. Safety: Players should use the same safety precautions while playing the game that they would in any other outdoor setting, including caution in strange locations. Infringement: PokeStops are supposed to all be on public property (or cooperative private sites), but at least one homeowner has reported that his historic house is mistakenly a PokeStop. Players should be respectful of others’ private property. ❋

The office of Colorado Attorney General Cynthia H. Coffman settled two lawsuits against consumer lenders who targeted the military this year. The lenders are Freedom Stores Inc., d/b/a/ Freedom Furniture & Electronics and affiliated companies Military Credit Services, LLC, and Freedom Acceptance Corporation (“Freedom Furniture”) and USA Discounters, Ltd., d/b/a USA Living and d/b/a Fletcher’s Jewelers (“USA Discounters”). The settlements, which are in the form of consent judgments entered by the Denver District Court, require the lenders to pay over $3.9 million in redress for harmed consumers and contain injunctive relief designed to ensure future compliance with the law. “My office will not tolerate those who seek to take advantage of military service members and other consumers to unjustly profit from illegal lending and collection schemes,” said Attorney General Coffman. “These settlements help ensure that Colorado’s consumer lending laws will continue to provide protection—particularly to our active military service members who may otherwise be exploited while on duty protecting our country.”

FLOORFINDER GUIDE Flooring runs from classic favorites, like hardwood, to technologically inspired products. Here’s a look at what’s underfoot these days.

The classic look of hardwood complements all furniture types, but the price could give you sticker shock. However, hardwood lasts for generations.
options, including classic treatments and new technologies (prices do not include installation costs).
Hip Hardwoods Always popular, solid-wood floors add warmth to any room. Hardwoods include oak, birch, maple, fir, cherry and pine, to name just a few, and different stains and finishes make hardwood a handsome choice for most rooms. The best thing about hardwood is likely its look. Neutral wood tones complement practically every furniture style, from antique credenzas to minimalist couches. Plus, hardwood floors last for generations, are easy to
clean and add great value to a home. Rustic looks in oak and hickory are especially popular and plentiful, as are distressed hardwoods and textured wire-brushed planks. However, this classic style has a few downsides. The first is price, as planks can run around $5-13 per square foot. Hardwood floors also wear in hightraffic areas, and may need waxing and sanding and refinishing over time. They’re also loud and not terribly petfriendly; paws will clack and slip on this floor. Hardwood can dent, too, although some manufacturers infuse woods with substances like acrylic to make them

hen it comes to giving your home a makeover, there’s nothing quite like getting to the bottom of the matter—floors. Though we often overlook the styles underfoot, flooring sets the tone for an entire room and can drastically affect the experience of a space. But the sheer number of flooring materials, styles and options can be overwhelming. “From a practical standpoint, there are several things to consider,” advises Scott Humphrey, CEO of the World Floor Covering Association. He recommends considering how long you plan on living in the home, how often you entertain, and whether you have children and pets. Also consider how much aesthetics, functionality, durability and price matter to you. The answers will direct you toward the best flooring for your home and lifestyle. breathe easy These houseplants can eliminate stale air and toxic pollutants inside your home.
There’s nothing quite like a nice breeze through an open window to freshen up a stuffy room. But unless you’re ready for an arctic blast, you’ll have to come up with another option for clearing the air during blustery winter months. Though it’s often overlooked, cleaning the indoor air is immensely important; the Environmental Protection Agency ranks indoor pollution in the top five environmental risks to public health. In fact, EPA studies found that, on average, indoor pollutant levels may be two to five times higher than outdoor pollutant levels. Pollutants can be toxins, allergens or carcinogens, and often come from household chemical products like solvents and cleansers, as well as carpeting, vinyl flooring, wood finishes, mattresses, secondhand smoke, mold, dust, 24

pests and poorly vented furnaces. Formaldehyde is the most common household pollutant, stemming from its wide commercial use in adhesives. Particle-wood products, new carpeting and new wood furniture can bring formaldehyde and other VOCs (volatile organic compounds) into a home. Fortunately, a variety of widely available houseplants act as filters against these common toxins through a process called phytoremediation. NASA’s Clean Air Study, which was performed in 1989 to find new ways to clean the air in space stations, compiled the first list of effective plants. Although all plants turn carbon dioxide into oxygen, which will help freshen up any room, the plants listed here actually help diffuse chemicals that are harmful to humans. According to their findings, researchers recommend having one plant for every 100 square feet of living space. (continued on page 26)
Go in Peace
Peace lilies (Spathiphyllum) were found to be one of the best cleaners of all, as the plants effectively reduced all six chemicals studied: benzene, formaldehyde, trichloroethylene, ammonia, xylene and toluene. Place the plant near a north- or westfacing window, out of direct sunlight. “Peace lilies are one of the best at cleaning air. They’re really easy to grow, as long as you keep them moist,” says Corinna Bozella, houseplant specialist at Longmont’s The Flower Bin.

Snake Your Way Even easier to grow is the snake plant (Sansevieria), which removes five of the six chemicals studied: benzene, formaldehyde, trichloroethylene, xylene and toluene. Also called motherin-law’s tongue, this succulent is extremely hardy. Place it in a sunny window and water sparingly, every few weeks. Short on sun? Give snake plant a try anyway—it’s known to thrive even in less-than-ideal conditions. “The dark-green one works just as well as the variegated one when it comes to cleansing the air,” Bozella notes. “They’re great because you don’t have to baby them.”
Wild One
Add heightened interest to your home with red-edged dracaena (Dracaena marginata). Dracaena grows slowly, but can eventually reach up to 15 feet if conditions allow. Put dracaena in a taller room with bright filtered light, and water it when the soil is dry. These succulent shrubs tolerate shade and dry air, and they’re equal to snake plant at removing benzene, formaldehyde, trichloroethylene, xylene and toluene. But they’re not for everyone: “They can get a wild growth pattern. They kind of remind me of Dr. Seuss,” Bozella says. “If you want something uniform, you don’t want this one.”

Pots of Power
The cheerful exterior of potted chrysanthemums belies their cleaning power. These flowers remove benzene, formaldehyde, ammonia, trichloroethylene, xylene and toluene, and have the added bonus of making great gifts during the holidays. However, potted mums are a floral variety that’s different than the mums widely available for planting outdoors. Potted mums generally won’t last as indoor plants beyond a few weeks. Plenty of light and water will increase their longevity.
PHOTOS: SHUTTERSTOCK.COM
Ficus (Ficus benjamina) is an elegant, easy-to-grow plant that filters formaldehyde, xylene and toluene from the air. Also known as the weeping fig, this staple of office parks and low-light homes tolerates limited sun and iffy watering, as long as temperatures remain roughly the same. To keep the plant healthy, place your ficus away from the door in as much light as your house allows, and trim off dead leaves. “All ficus plants are good at cleaning the air, especially the rubber plant,” Bozella says, referring to Ficus robusta. “Rubberleaf ficus are especially good, because they put a lot of oxygen back into the air.” The rubber plant thrives in dim rooms and removes formaldehyde at a higher rate than any other plant studied. “They vary in size and can get nice and big. If you keep them pruned, they stay nicely shaped.” The downside? The leaves are toxic if ingested, and can be especially dangerous to house cats and puppies. If you have pets, be sure to place this plant out of reach.
Wandering Wonder
Building on NASA’s findings, a 2009 University of Georgia study identified several additional ornamentals that remove contaminants. One of the prettier ornamentals is purple-heart plant (Tradescantia pallida, also called wandering Jew), which adds splashes of bright purple color. “Purple-heart plant is good indoors and does great outdoors as an annual,” Bozella says. “They propagate really easily; if you stick cuttings in water, they’ll root.” Purple-heart plant does well in hanging containers or pots, and produces small lavender blooms in spring. Give this plant bright filtered light, and water when dry. ❋

Good Air
The most effective way to reduce indoor air pollution is to get rid of the source, so buy a test kit to check indoor air quality, air out new carpeting and mattresses, buy formaldehyde-free furniture, and make sure you have proper air ventilation and an efficient furnace, and that you change the filters regularly. Filling a home with the natural cleaning power of plants will accomplish two things: You’ll beat the winter blues and breathe a little easier through the winter months and beyond.

Lock Down Your Login; Passwords Are Not Enough
uckily, there’s a simple and quick way to put you in control of your personal information and keep your key accounts like email, banking and social media safer–it's called strong authentication. Strong authentication–sometimes called multi-factor or two-factor authentication or login approval–goes beyond just a username and password and is a way to lock down your login. Many online services, including apps and websites, offer free options to help you protect your information and ensure it’s actually you trying to access your account–not just someone with your password. Examples of ways you can fortify your online accounts by enabling the strongest authentication tools available include: • Security key. Use a small device, such as one that plugs into your USB port, which you have in your possession when logging in. • Biometric. Use a fingerprint or camera, typically found on your mobile device, tablet or PC, to verify it’s you logging in. • One-time code. Use a unique code that you enter into a website or application sent to you as a text or provided by an app on your mobile device. 30
BBB Community Guide
Most of the popular online accounts and services offer strong authentication technologies for free, and they make it easy, generally only requiring an extra step when logging in from a new/unrecognized device. If it’s not evident at first glance, double check with companies to see if added protections is available, and if it is not, implement a strong password for use only on that site, and let the company know you care about security by requesting stronger authentication options. There are some simple ways to secure your accounts through better password practices, as well. • Make your password a sentence. A strong password is a sentence that is at least 12 characters long. Focus on positive sentences or phrases that you like to think about and are easy to remember (for example, “I love country music.”). On many sites, you can even use spaces in your password. • Unique account, unique password. Having separate passwords for every account helps to thwart cybercriminals. At a minimum, separate your work and personal accounts and make sure that your critical accounts have the strongest passwords. Don’t Get Scammed This Holiday Season
PHOTO BY MONKEY BUSINESS IMAGES; TREE BALL BY TOPSELLER
his holiday season, it’s not just credible businesses and charities hoping you’ll open your wallets; scammers are out to get their hands on your ho-ho-ho dough too. Two prevalent scams we’ll discuss in detail here are gift card and charity scams. First, let’s talk gift card scams. How do they work? Scammers copy the codes off the back of gift cards before they are purchased. The scammer then waits for the card to be activated and begins to drain the funds. If the card has a scratch-off code on the back, the scammers scratch this off and replace it with a sticker that looks very similar to the original scratch-off. In many stores, gift cards are available in an accessible place to consumers; this means they are accessible to scammers as well. Some scammers are able to take pictures of the needed information in the store. Other scammers have been known to take a stack of gift cards home to ensure they have time to copy down all of the needed info or strip it out using a magnetic reader. After they copy down all of the information they need, the scammer then returns to the store with the gift cards and places them in the front to ensure they will soon be purchased. You may wonder how the scammer knows when the gift cards have been activated. Most retailers offer an online feature to check the balance of the cards. Scammers will check these websites repeatedly and once there is activity on the gift card they will go drain it. Consumers can protect themselves in the following ways: • If it is possible, always make sure you purchase the gift card from behind the counter. If you are able to do this, you will know the scammers have not yet gotten their hands on the needed information to drain your gift card. • If you get the card from the shelf, make sure you check for signs of tampering. • Always save your receipt when you purchase a gift card. If the funds are drained, you may be able to recover your losses with the merchant who sold the card or from the store at which the gift card is redeemable.
Another scam to be on the look-out for this holiday season is the charity scam. Scammers take full advantage of consumers’ generosity during the holidays. Scammers may get in contact with you via email, phone, face-to-face, mail, and so on, in or-
der to try to collect funds from you for their “charity”. There are some red flags you can keep a look-out for in order to avoid falling victim to a charity scam. • Scammers won’t be able to provide proof that contributions will be a tax deduction. • Scammers will refuse to give you any details about the charity. • Scammers often use a name that is very similar to a reputable charity. • Scammers will ask for donations in cash or a wire transfer. • Scammers use high-pressure tactics in order to obtain your funds as fast as possible. Here are some simple ways you can prevent yourself from falling victim to these tactics: • Always check with the BBB’s Wise Giving Alliance before making a donation by visiting www.give.org • Ask for detailed information about the charity such as: telephone number, address, mission, and principal’s names. • Do a google search of the charity’s name; if Google provides information alleging a possible scam, this should be a red flag. • Never send cash to a charity. • Never send a wire transfer to someone you do not know. ❋
Armed with knowledge and a few simple strategies, you can make the holidays merrier by protecting yourself. Here’s wishing you a safe, happy and scam-free season.

BBB SEASONAL TiPS
BBB's Tips for
H liday Giving The holiday giving season is in full swing and BBB wants donors to be informed when they make donations of time and money. “The holiday season is a time when most donors are their most generous. It is imperative that donors give to charities that are efficient and provide measurable outcomes,” said Carrie Rossman, director of the BBB Institute for Marketplace Trust. “Donors now have many different ways to help the charities of their choice and we want them to understand what questions they need to ask and what to look out for.”
BBB offers the following tips: Sound-a-Like Scams. Donate to the right charity, not one that just sounds like a reputable charity. High-pressure pitches. A reputable charity will answer questions and inform you about their operations. Don’t feel pressured to donate on the spot. Donate goods. If you donate goods, make sure they are in good condition. Giving unusable items in poor condition creates an undue burden on the charity you are trying to help. Text donations. After you text message a certain number, the donation is added to your cell phone bill. While this is fast and easy, the donation can take months to reach the charity. Don’t give cash. Always give in the form of a check or money order made out to the charity, never an individual (unless, of course, it’s a Salvation Army bell ringer). Cause marketing. Many products claim a portion of proceeds go to a certain cause. Make sure there is a disclosure of the actual or anticipated amount of purchase that will go to charity. Check with state charity officials. In many states, charities are required to register, usually with the office of the attorney general, before soliciting. Go to www.nasconet.org/documents/u-s-charity-offices/ for the relevant office in your state. Embedded giving. Many grocery stores give you the option to donate to a charity by adding that amount to your receipt. Make sure you know exactly which charity will benefit from your donation. Online donations. Make sure you give through a secure website with “https” in the browser. You should also review the charity’s privacy policy to see how your personal information can be used.
Telemarketing. When making a donation over the phone, make sure you are giving directly to the charity and not to a third party. In some cases a for-profit telemarketing company may be keeping a sizable portion of your donation. ❋

Beauty the
of
ugly food
Why imperfect food should find its way to our tables instead of the trash. BY ELI WALLACE
PHOTOS: SHUTTERSTOCK.COM
Imagine you spend enormous quantities of time and resources making something. You do it well—so well that everyone you know eagerly waits for the things you make. You ship your things around the world. Far-flung friends and strangers want your product. Would it surprise you, then, if 40 percent of what you made ended up in the trash? Welcome to the modern agricultural system. “We put an enormous amount of resources into food, which is why minimizing food waste is so important,” says Hana Dansky of Boulder Food Rescue (BFR), a nonprofit devoted to placing perishables in hungry bellies. “Fifty percent of our land use and 80 percent of our freshwater resources go to agriculture. Then we throw 40 percent of it out, sometimes before it even reaches anyone’s home.” BFR is currently working with the city of Boulder to audit food waste in the city, but Dansky sees food waste as a national, systemic problem more than a local one. She says, “A lot of it comes
from the perception of abundance that we have in our country. It’s a perception of perfection. We’ll always have stacks and stacks of apples in every grocery store, no matter what season it is. Each apple not only has to have the perfect shape, but also be perfect: no bruises, no brown spots. Then the produce is expected to last for the longest amount of time once it’s bought.” In the agricultural chain, the biggest wasters are actually farms, which recognize that imperfect produce won’t sell to grocery stores. Farmers compensate for their losses by overproducing food and leaving the unsellable, ugly fruits and vegetables on the ground. Then there are the shipping losses. A truckload of perfect avocados may leave the farm, but by the time it travels across
the country, many of the fruits end up nicked, bruised or overripe. Those will be culled from the group; then buyers will carefully scrutinize the ones that make it to the store shelf. “At grocery stores, they have to overstock. They cull the produce three times per day and throw out good food that isn’t pretty enough,” Dansky explains. “Stores always keep things overstocked, because people are more likely to buy something if there’s more of it on the shelf, rather than if there’s only one or two items left.”
Spoiled Rotten Even if they make it to your fridge, perishables may not make it to your mouth. A 2015 study by the American Chemistry Council reported that the average American dumps $640 worth
Use less-than-perfect vegetables in soups and stews—no one will know how much you had to trim them. If they’re really homely, puree the soup, or throw your carrot nubs, half-onions, parsley stems, withered mushrooms and limp celery stalks into the stockpot. Just don’t use anything moldy. figures that show one out of six adults and one out of five children in America are food insecure. “We're talking families with young kids who have more mouths than they can feed and are living in a cycle of poverty," says Dansky. The flip side is the senior population, which is complicated by mobility issues and a lack of income.”
Ways to Pitch In
Moldy berries taste awful, so pick them over carefully. Trim salvageable berries, discard any leaves, and use them fresh or frozen in smoothies and other foods where perfection doesn’t matter. Citrus fruits that look bad outside can stay juicy inside for weeks; squeeze them and freeze the juice for marinades and other uses.

beautiful on the inside as their ingredients were ugly on the outside. The result? Sold-out stores, a rush of media attention, and according to the retailer, an average of 1.2 tons of ugly produce sold per store in the first two days. Some U.S. grocers have followed suit, including the new nonprofit discount retailer The Daily Table in Dorchester, Mass., founded by Doug Rauch. The former president of Trader Joe’s, Rauch cited the food waste he saw at that chain and the country’s incredible amount of food insecurity—meaning you’re not sure when or where your next meal will come—as motivators for creating the store. BFR’s Dansky cites

of food per year (the U.S. government estimates the cost per household per year to be around $900). And sell-by dates encourage people to toss what’s often still perfectly good—especially when it comes to eggs, dairy products and meats. If the waste of resources and money isn’t enough, there’s also pollution. As food decomposes in landfills (35 million tons in 2012, according to the Environmental Protection Agency), it creates methane, a greenhouse gas. And that adds up to trouble. So what can we do to ameliorate a system that leaves people hungry, food uneaten, resources wasted, money lost, and global climate change accelerating? Enter “Inglorious Foods.” In 2014, the European Year Against Food Waste was in full swing. Intermarché, France’s third-largest grocery chain, launched a campaign called “les fruits et légumes moches,” or in English, inglorious fruits and vegetables. The grocery bought lumpy lemons, bruised apples, deformed carrots and gnarly potatoes, and sold them in stores for 30 percent of the price of their picture-perfect counterparts. In addition to the produce, stores sold fruit juices and vegetable soups made from inglorious produce to show consumers that these products tasted as
Unless you’re the owner of a national grocery store, it’s hard to know how individuals can reduce food waste in meaningful ways. “The first step is awareness,” Dansky says. “Awareness had to grow in Europe before the grocery stores responded.” That can mean posting on social media or asking grocery stores that don’t work with food redistributors about their food waste. Individuals can donate extra food, including excess garden produce, to food pantries. Dansky also recommends visiting www.lovefoodhatewaste.com for storage tips, last-minute recipes and planning ideas to reduce personal food waste. Finally, volunteering with food pantries and redistribution organizations like BFR, EFAA and CFS is a hands-on way to tackle food waste. Assisting them financially is also a huge boon to getting nutrients into hungry mouths. So perhaps it’s time to get over our perception of perfection and start welcoming ugly food to the table. Our wallets, climate and communities will be fuller and better for it. ❋
Collect “inglorious” apples for a batch of delicious, ridiculously easy homemade applesauce. Dried-out as it looks, the apple on the left might still work fine for that purpose, while the spotted one only needs a little trimming. If you like pink applesauce, use as much of the red peel as possible.
