St Nicolas Church - Thoughts from your Vicar. November is a month of remembering On the 1st November we remember All Saints at our 11am service, then at 5pm we are holding a joint service at St Peter’s, Slinfold for All Souls, a special service when we remember our loved ones who are no longer with us. There is a list in St Nicolas church for names to be entered of those you wish to be remembered at this service and during the service there will also be the opportunity to light a candle to remember your loved ones. The following Sunday is Remembrance Sunday when our main service starts at 10.45am in the Village Hall. Rev. Sandra Hall During this service we will, with churches all around the country, keep two minutes silence at 11am as a sign of respect for those who lost their lives in the two World Wars and also in more recent conflicts along with those who still suffer the effects of war. On this Sunday, also known as "Poppy Day", many people will wear a poppy as a sign of remembrance. Many poppies grew in the fields where much of the fighting in the First World War took place. After the war, in 1921, imitation poppies were first sold in Britain to help children in areas that had suffered from the fighting. Later, poppies were sold by the British Legion, to help disabled ex-servicemen and their families. Nowadays, the poppies are made at the British Legion's Poppy Factory. A team of 60 people, most of them disabled, work all year to make more than 34 million poppies, 5 million remembrance petals, 750,000 remembrance crosses and nearly 100,000 wreaths, including those laid at the Cenotaph in London. In November 1920 the ‘Unknown Warrior’ was buried in Westminster Abbey. The tomb contained the body of an unknown ordinary serviceman picked at random. It was laid in the abbey in the morning, and tens of thousands of people had walked past the grave by the end of the afternoon. Over a million people visited it in its first week. The tomb was designed to honour the ordinary serviceman and to provide emotional or spiritual relief for survivors. Local war memorials were erected throughout the 1920s. At annual ceremonies the names of the dead are read out loud, and so the silence is accompanied by a vocal acknowledgement. Do join us, if you can, to remember our loved ones. Please do contact me if you would like a chat or a visit. Telephone: 01403 790197 or email: sandra.richard@tiscali.co.uk With love in Christ, Revd Sandra Hall 6

Set against the backdrop of a far more successful English world cup campaign in 1991 and whilst on a Barns Green Cricket Club tour to Gloucester; some young non-rugby players convinced some very old and very past it former players that 'one game' would be a great idea-and here we still are! Currently unbeaten this season in Sussex Two West, we are playing a fluid open style of rugby on a temporary rugby pitch courtesy of Peter and Anita Burdfield in a spectacular rural location on Fulfords Hill, on the back lane from Muntham to Itchingfield. On the run up to Christmas we will be at home as follows: November 7th Crawley 2nds November 21st Chichester 4ths December 12th Pulborough 3rds We would welcome you in any capacity so if you would like to join us as a player, a Vice President or a spectator please call our Chairman Andrew Stanbridge on 07860 666614 for more details. Another great day for the village: Report on the Barns Green Half Marathon On Sunday the 27th September the 33rd running of the Barns Green Half Marathon started at the earlier time of 10am. Since the race began in 1982, 11am was the race start time but the new time worked very well and seemed to be welcomed by most of the runners. James Baker of Chichester Runners & AC won the men’s race in a time of 1 Hour 11 minutes and 8 seconds. First lady over the line was Amy Harris of Horsham Amphibians Triathlon Club in 1 hour 22 minutes 9 seconds. This year’s race was started by Kenney Jones, former drummer with the Small Faces and The Who. Kenney was supporting the race charity Prostate Cancer UK. Local fitness instructor, Diane Eggitt led the runners from the stage in 10 minute warm up to music just before the race start. The fancy dress competition was won by Zoe Munday who was dressed as a baby and completed the course by crawling over the line! On the Green there was plenty of additional activity. St John’s Ambulance had a strong presence to help with any runners who suffered illness or injury, there were physiotherapists on hand to massage aching limbs, and drinks and catering stalls. Thank you to everyone who lives on or close to the race route for your great cooperation and understanding with regard to the road closures and to everyone who came along to the Green or lined the race route to support the runners. About £3,500 was raised this year for Prostate Cancer UK and any other surplus funds from the event will find its way to a charity or one of the many facilities, clubs, youth organisations or sports clubs in and around Barns Green. Staging the Barns Green Half Marathon is a major undertaking and a huge thanks goes to everyone who helped (everyone gives their time for free) to make the event such a huge success. It is becoming increasingly hard to attract new runners as there are now so many more races taking place each year around the country. One new initiative for 2016 which is in the advanced planning stages is the introduction of a 10km race to run in parallel with the Half Marathon. More news about this will be announced in the coming months. Next year’s event will take place on Sunday 2nd October. If you would like to support or help The Barns Green Half Marathon contact the race secretary; racesecbghm@btinternet.com

This year’s Panto from the Barns Green Players is;

(not quite) The Three Musketeers Tickets on sale from 1st November One for All…….And All for One…….Set in Paris, this year’s Pantomime has everything…A dashing Hero, a Princess, a Dame, a Baron and his henchmen and Three Musketeers who seem to prefer food to fighting. The Kingdom of Malodeurs is under threat from the Baron who has also been capturing the children. The Queen turns to her old and trusted friend D’Artagnan for help. He arrives and with a little help from a Magic Pigeon called Basil concocts a plan to save the day. Will the plan work? Will the children be rescued? Will the Queen keep her Kingdom, Will D’Artagnan get the Princess? And who will win Masterchef? Yes, it’s Panto time again and cast members from the Barns Green Players have just started rehearsing in preparation for another great show. This year’s Pantomime is “(not quite) The Three Musketeers” and as always the cast and backstage crew are preparing yet another great production to entertain you. There will be a total of 6 shows performed over two weekends in the Barns Green Village Hall this coming January. The shows will be on Friday 15th (evening), Saturday 16th (afternoon and evening), Friday 22nd (evening), and Saturday 23rd (afternoon and evening). The afternoon performances begin at 2pm and evening performances at 7.30pm. Neale Francis is Directing the production and is extremely excited about this year’s production. “We had over 40 people at the auditions in September which meant that many people missed out this year which is a shame, but it did mean we had a very large pool of talented actors, dancers and singers to choose from. We have some new tricks and special effects to make this year’s show the best ever”. The shows are aimed at all ages although the afternoon performances are particularly suitable for the very youngest children. There are singalongs and sweets for the kids and opportunities for the audience to join in with the fun. For the evening performances there is a licensed bar serving a variety of alcoholic and soft drinks as well as sweets.

Tickets cost just £11 for adults and £8 for children. There is a special price of just £7 for all tickets on Friday 15th January. Tickets are available from the box office – 01403 731566 or through the website – www.barnsgreenplayers.co.uk We look forward to welcoming you in January for some great fun and entertainment. 13

1ST BARNS GREEN AND ITCHINGFIELD RAINBOWS AND BROWNIES MACMILLAN BIG COFFEE MORNING. On the 23rd September 2015, Barns Green Brownies arranged a MacMillan Coffee event, which involved making invitations and posters to ask people to come and raise money. We sold tea and cakes, and arranged a raffle, which raised a fantastic ÂŁ418, plus a little in gift aid. By Paige Age 8 We had our event in the evening, and I am delighted to say, we had a fantastic turn out. A few village members joined in the event and helped us raise an amazing ÂŁ418 for Macmillan. A huge thank you to all who attended, baked, bought ate and supported. THANK YOU! The Brownies were able to earn their Hostess badge and the Rainbows a fundraisers badge. BARNS GREEN HALF MARATHON We then turned our efforts towards the Half Marathon, another good cause where the girls get involved with the local community. We help at the water station by the village hall where the girls are lucky enough to see the runners start and again as they come back to the green. They must have done a brilliant job, as some runners even complimented them on the Half Marathon Facebook page! We also have the role of handing out goodie bags to the finishers, which the girls did with smiles on their faces. They worked so hard, adding water bottles to the bags, carrying them from the village hall to the finish line and then handing them out. Many of the girls were there from 9.30 until 2.30pm. CHIP SHOP HIKE FROM BAX CASTLE TO SOUTHWATER COUNTRY PARK The Brownies (and Rainbows) went on a trip and we got some chips. It was fun because we went to dinosaur island (Southwater) at the end. We played with our friends, at the start we had a mini beast hunt. It was called the Downslink. By Emily Age 7 ROAD SAFETY WITH THE POLICE On Wednesday 7th October Barnes Green Brownies and Rainbows had a visit from Sussex police. They taught us through a fun evening of games, colouring and different activities about road safety, the dangers and signs to look out for when walking or going out on our bikes during the day and at night. The best most exciting part was being able to sit in a police car with flashing blue lights. The policeman put the siren on for us to hear. It was very noisy and very LOUD! Thank you Sussex Police. Merve Goddard 01403 734408 merve.goddard@btinternet.com Mary Hallett ww1@barnsgreen.com November 1915 The Great War has ground remorselessly on through the trench warfare of Flanders and the abortive rear door offensive of Gallipoli. The Battle of Loos has claimed over 60,000 British casualties and almost 8,000 British lives. Eleven brave men of the parish have already given their lives for King and Country…with no end in sight. November 2015 Our HLF sponsored project continues to research and document the stories of the men of Barns Green, Itchingfield and Christ’s Hospital who served and of life for those left behind and I am delighted to announce the publication of two books and a website to share our findings with all those who want to learn more. Our Website can be found at www.barnsgreenswar.uk or via the “Barns Green Remembers” link on www. barnsgreen.com, and gives a summary of the information in the books as well as a means for us to continue to update findings when new information comes to light. The two books are titled… “Service and Sacrifice” which records the surviving details of the service of the men who served, and in some cases fell in WW1, together with some background to conflict and how to research it. (265pp) and “Life On The Home Front” which provides a narrative of life in Barns Green and Itchingfield for those who waited at home - endeavouring to “do their bit” for the war effort whilst at the same time attempting to maintain some semblance of normality in far from normal circumstances. (330pp)

In the coming months we will be offering a range of opportunities to purchase these either singly or as a set of two for a discount. The first planned “public” sale will be at the Playgroup Christmas Fair on Saturday December 7th but it is also possible to purchase on-line by using the links at www.barnsgreenswar.uk/shop Prices are £8 for Service and Sacrifice, £9 for Life On The Home Front and £14 for the set of two. (p&p will be added at cost for those who need books posted). Those of you who expressed an interest and gave us your details at our first exhibition however will be contacted shortly with a discount offer. 17
