News from the GALA ASSOCIATION Join the “Santa Sleigh” procession on Sunday 3rd December starting at 4.00pm. Santa is making an unofficial visit to Broadbridge Heath and could be heading down a street near you. Starting at 4pm on Cheesmer Way, the Santa Sleigh Procession will commence a route around the village, bringing fairy lights, tinsel, the best Christmas tunes and the main man himself, all in aid of spreading some Christmas cheer. Take to the streets with your little ones to wave him along and maybe pop a few pennies in the collection buckets to help fund the BBH Gala Association’s events next year - which will, hopefully, include the resurrection of the infamous Village Fete. Due to this being his busiest time of year, Santa won’t be able to make it down every single street, so here is the map of his route. The Santa Sleigh Procession Route Map:

Roads include: Cheesmer Way, Churchill Way, Ellis Road, Palmer Avenue, Heydon Way, Pelling Way, Carter Drive, Cook Way, Sargent Way, Wells Croft, Chantler Lane, Thompson Road, Edwards Close, Charrington Way, Shelley Drive, Singleton Road, Findon Way, Corsletts Avenue, Thelton Avenue, Bearsden Way, Wickhurst Lane, Castle Road, Church Lane, Church Road, Stanford Way, Billingshurst Road (see map), Warnham Road, Old Guildford Road (see map), Hollands Field, St Johns Crescent, Sullington Mead. Next Gala Association meeting: Tuesday 9th January at 7.30pm in the Village Centre. 3

2nd Broadbridge Heath Brownies Wow! What a great half term we have had at Brownies. We have worked on and completed our Farm Pawprint which involved a visit from a local Beekeeper talking about her apiary and showing some bees and honeycomb to the girls. Many asked good questions and the Lady was very impressed. This was followed by a visit to the Knepp Castle Wildlands where we met Ryan from the Sussex Bat Conservation who gave an informative talk on Bats, showed us 4 different types of bats and followed by us going for a walk with our Bat detectors to listen to the Bats coming out at dusk. A fun and informative evening was had by all. We then followed this by the Brownies bringing in items to fill a harvest box. They decorated a shoe box, wrote a message on the box from their six and filled the box up. We then had Major Iain Stewart from the Salvation Army visit us and explain to the Brownies their charity work and that they are currently helping 90 families in Horsham with food parcels. We were thanked as a Unit for providing so many boxes which will go to some of these families especially at Christmas time. Our Unit have certainly learnt about helping others in the wider community. 2nd Broadbridge Heath Guides and Rangers During this term the Guides have enjoyed pumpkin carving and an evening of Guiding traditions. The girls learnt how to use semaphore to spell out their name, light a candle with a match, a relay race on Guiding history and an old fashion type of inspection. Still to come this term is a night hike, mystery cooking evening and a winter residential.

Parish Point Of View Brian New, Assistant Priest at St John’s Church What if the Christmas story is true? It’s nearly here again! For many of us it’s a very busy period as we try to get so much done to prepare for Christmas; presents, decorations, the usual arguments over how big a tree to get, food, parties, arranging family visits. We jump on the treadmill of spending, eating, dashing about and then seem to get dropped off afterwards, exhausted, overfed and wondering what it was all about. For others of us, Christmas can be a very difficult time – reminders of people who are no longer here to share it, loneliness as we watch others celebrating things we cannot share, a sense of isolation because we cannot afford the demands of this most expensive season. However you look at Christmas – whether joyful, excited, fearful or lonely – take a moment to ask yourself, “What if the Christmas story is true?”

What if, 2000 years ago, a baby really was born in Bethlehem? What if that baby really is the son of God? What if God did this because he loves us? What if God is real? What if I can really know Jesus today, right here in Broadbridge Heath in 2017? Because if it is true – isn’t that the best gift of all this Christmas? God was so determined to show that he loves us and wants us to know him, that he gave his own son to us. Read the story for yourself in the bible in Luke’s gospel, chapter 2. You’re also very welcome at any or all of our services at St John’s over Christmas where you’ll hear more about this wonderful story – and get to sing your favourite carols. I do hope you have a lovely Christmas – enjoy the family time, the presents, the excitement and the carols. If you can, look out for your neighbours who may be lonely or struggling. And, this year, make space for the real star of the season – Jesus.

St John’s Church, Broadbridge Heath, Church Road, RH12 3LD 01403 274114 info@stjohnsbbh.org.uk www.stjohnsbbh.org.uk Children, families and people of all ages are welcome. 7

BBH Mag Sport

News from local sports clubs.

If you would like to publish your sports news in this magazine please contact the Editor by email: bbh.mag@gmail.com FOOTBALL Broadbridge Heath Football Club The first team had their best ever run in the the FA Vase winning three games against opposition from the Southern Combination League, the Southern Counties East League and the Combined Counties League before losing to a very good Thatcham Town team from the Hellenic League. Some exciting times along the way and despite a heavy 8-2 defeat in the final game it was an enjoyable run and one the many Heath supporters who travelled to Thatcham will remember for a long time. The club are also still in the Sussex Senior Cup and are through to the last 16 with all the big hitters still in the competition, a home draw against Brighton & Hove Albion, Crawley Town or Horsham will help pay the bills but whoever we play it will be a tough game for the Bears. The final cup competition we are still in is the Sussex RUR Cup where we have reached the quarter-final stage and are at home to Littlehampton Town a team we have already beaten twice this season in league and cup. The down side of doing well in cup competitions is that it can effect your league form and that has been the case with the team currently in 13th place out of a division of 20 teams but I'm sure we'll see an improvement on that in the second half of the season. The Reserve team are under new management and we welcome Andy Sargent to the club, Andy has previously managed at Rottingdean Village and Haywards Heath, he will be assisted by former Heath youth team player Matt Canavan making a welcome return to the Bears. The wet weather has meant the Under 18s have been unable to play in recent weeks with pitches cutting up after senior games on a Saturday or being too wet to play. They currently sit 4th in the Southern Combination League Central Division but have games in hand on the teams above them. Continued on next page..

The Juniors teams season is well under way with training mainly on Thursdays and most matches on Saturday mornings. The club have introduced FA recommendations which say substitutes and coaches should be on one side of the pitch with supporters behind the respect barrier on the other side. It should also be pointed out that smoking is strictly prohibited anywhere in view of the players, this is not a club rule it is an FA rule and we would appreciate that all supporters adhere to this. Meanwhile work on the new sports pavilion south of the Leisure Centre should have started by the time you read this, unless of course there are further delays to a facility that should have been in place several years ago. The first stage of the latest schedule, is to establish an access road, drainage and service ducts in November. Foundations and masonry work is set to begin mid-December and completion by June in preparation for the 2018-2019 season. First Team Fixtures: 02 Dec Away v Newhaven , K.O. 3.00 09 Dec Away v Chichester City, K.O. 3.00 12 Dec Home v Littlehampton Town K.O. 7.45 (Cup) 16 Dec Home v Worthing United, K.O. 3.00 27 Dec Away v Horsham YMCA, K.O. 7.30 CRICKET

Broadbridge Heath Cricket Club

Byfleets Lane Broadbridge Heath West Sussex RH12 3PB www. broadbridgeheath.play-cricket.com By the time you read this article, the future of our 100+ year old club will have been decided. After surveying current and recent-past members, the Committee will have put their proposals for our future formally to the members at the AGM on the 24th and the outcome will be covered in the next edition. It promises to be an interesting meeting. Meanwhile, our renovation work on the cricket square (essential whatever happens) is now complete, led by Nathan Booker, and it has been put to bed for the winter. I think Nathan would have liked to hunker down in hibernation with it after all the work he put in. No matter what ultimately happens to our Club, I’m sure there will be cricket on the Top Common for a few more years to come so our ground maintenance continues. In the last edition I mentioned that a couple of people in the village had kindly come forward to offer assistance with the ground maintenance. We are now in active discussion with them to see if arrangements can be agreed. Finally, on a good note after our summer player issues, we can still put a competitive 6-a-side team as our recent appearance the County Finals proved. The winter Indoor League at Crawley is also now up and running and in our first match we beat strong local rivals Barns Green, a club very much on the crest of a wave at the moment. We have also just beaten Crawley ‘B’, another bigger and stronger club, with good team performances, especially from our Chairman, Tim Wells. If only summer league cricket was 6-a-side ! LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Send your views by email to bbh.mag@gmail.com “Dear BBH Mag. I would really like to pass on my concerns about the main road through Wickhurst Green…….it's a relatively new road with several pedestrian crossings to houses and walk ways. Christmas Deer By our reporter, Sophie Thomhave-Lee Christmas is approaching and what better way to get in the festive spirit than by spotting some deer. On the outskirts of Broadbridge Heath, Church Road, you might be able to spot some! You're able to take a walk through the deer reserve and enjoy searching for them. It's a great activity for the whole family to get yourself in the mood for Christmas. It's all completely free and easily accessible. The park supports a winter herd of about 200 (20 - 25 breeding stags, 85 - 90 breeding hinds and 90 young stock) increasing up to 280 animals each summer with calves. This means lots of deer around to be spotted and admired. 12

Remembrance Day in Broadbridge Heath. 11th November.

A remembrance service at St John’s Church was followed by the laying of wreaths at the war memorial. Many of the streets on the Wickhurst Green development are named after servicemen who are listed on the war memorial. The service was attended by the vicar of St John’s, Rev Paddy Beresford, the Guides, Rainbows and Scouts and members of the public.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them. 13

News from Shelley Primary School December 2017 As we move through the Autumn term and towards Christmas the children at Shelley School show no signs of slowing down! Year 3 and 4 enjoyed a wonderful visit to the Science Museum in London, while Year 5 and 6 had a fantastic day at Brooklands Transport Museum. We are looking forward to welcoming as many of the local community as possible to our FOSS Christmas Bazaar which will this year be held on Friday 1st December between 5pm and 7pm. Please do come along and support your local school. December will also see the last of our sessions for parents of children who will be due to start school in September 2018. If your child was born between 1 September 2013 and 31 August 2014 then please contact us if you would like to look around. You will also need to complete your application for your child’s place by visiting www.westussex.gov.uk/admissions. If you would like any help with this process, we are happy to offer support. Telephone: 01403 265343 Email: office@shelleyprimary.school ——————————————————————-

Friends of Shelley School (FOSS) At our Annual General Meeting in October, our board of trustees increased from five members to nine, bringing us an influx of new initiatives and more pairs of enthusiastic hands! So far this term, FOSS have organized two very successful Discos for the children in November; final figures have yet to be calculated, but the end profit should be above £700, all of which will be used for improvements and enhancements to the school. We have contributed financially to drama workshops at Shelley School during Anti-Bullying Week (13th – 17th November). Our next large endeavour is the FOSS Christmas Bazaar on 1st December. The theme is “Santa’s Workshop”. It is rumoured that the big man in red himself will be present to distribute good cheer and gifts galore! Shortly after the Christmas Bazaar will be the first of hopefully many FOSS Film Nights; an evening of film, snacks, games and a showing of “The Muppet’s Christmas Carol”, timed to coincide with latenight shopping in Horsham town and allow parents to sneak away and do some special present-buying. Or, of course, stay at home and enjoy the peace for a while! Towards the end of term there will be another visit from Father Christmas, to spend time with every class and dispense even more cheer and yet more gifts! After Christmas, we will be putting our efforts into making our lovely school even lovelier, but until then we wish everyone a happy Christmas and New Year. FOSS is a registered charity. Email: fosspta17@gmail.com . We always welcome suggestions, comments and feedback. And donations! Rodena Howes-Yarlett (Chair) 14

I was chatting about the WI to some friends at an aerobics class recently and one said “I’m not interested in baking or jam making....” Another added “....and I can’t sew or knit.” It always surprises me that so many people still have an old fashioned view of the WI. With nearly 220,000 members in over 7,000 WIs, it’s the largest voluntary women’s organisation in the UK, catering for all ages and interests. There’s no typical WI member - apart from being someone who wants to meet like-minded women in a relaxed environment, hear interesting talks and learn new skills. For instance, a couple of weeks ago, our local Federation enjoyed a fascinating talk by former Director General of MI5, Dame Stella Rimington! We don’t just sit around sipping tea (actually, many of the growing number of younger WIs would rather share a bottle of wine than a pot of tea) and we don't sing Jerusalem - but that doesn’t mean we’ve rejected our traditional values. For over 100 years, the WI has been at the heart of many important campaigns, leading to positive change. It was the WI that started the ‘Keep Britain Tidy’ campaign in 1954 and the Fairtrade Foundation in 2002. Every year WIs raise and confront important issues and petition for change. Issues like human trafficking, a national minimum wage, more midwives and less ocean polluting plastic. We called for an end to inappropriate detention of people with mental health problems and argued against cuts to legal aid, highlighting the impact on victims of domestic violence. Our campaigns have also helped raise £10m for research on bee diseases, and secured government commitment to action on protecting bees. So whilst we have fun and provide women with a sense of community and friendship, it’s not all cake and crafts, we also make a real difference. Come to a meeting and see what you’re missing. Regular readers will know that Broadbridge Heath WI meets every second Tuesday afternoon but if you’re working, have child care or other responsibilities, you probably won’t be free at 2.30. So how would you feel about an evening WI? If that would suit you better and you’d like us to arrange a meeting to talk about setting one up, please get in touch. You can email: wi.broadbridgeheath@talktalk.net or call: Gill Axby on 01403 266525 or Jacqui King 01403 754718 15

The Financial Fairy Godmother of Broadbridge Heath

The Season to be Jolly I love Christmas! However, it is easy to get caught up with the madness of Christmas spending. I know if I leave my Christmas shopping until the last minute, I risk spending far too much. Here’s some useful advice to prevent this happening to you. Set your budget - Work out how much you can afford before you spend it. The best time to sit quietly and work out your budget is before the mad festive rush begins. Good planning also means there is less waste, otherwise, it is all too easy to overstock the fridge and throw away unused food later. Be creative - I’m sure you’ve heard the saying “It’s the thought that counts.” This is so true! It’s not the most expensive presents which are the best ones. Spread your spending - If you are paid early in December, it is tempting to use this income to fund your Christmas spending. But if your next pay cheque is not until the end of January, you’ll find you’ve run out of money in the New Year. Plan for 2018 - The festive period is a good time to look back over the past year and set resolutions for the coming year. Let's have a chat to see how I may be able to help you achieve your goals by putting a financial plan together. For a free initial consultation, please call me on 01403 288078. Meanwhile, I wish you a merry Christmas and prosperous New Year.
