We asked you to pop along on the 19th February if you'd be interested in an evening WI and, despite the nasty weather, there was an amazing turnout. Broadbridge Heath WI President, Wendy Griffin, welcomed everyone and introduced Yvonne Bee, who is a WI adviser. Yvonne explained how WIs work and what needs to be done to set up a new one. She then answered questions before we took a break for refreshments. As we relaxed over a cup of tea or a glass of wine and some home-made nibbles, regular WI members answered some more questions and chatted about some of the activities we enjoy. Last month, for example, we had a lovely time scoffing popcorn and ice cream at our film afternoon. And we’ll soon be off to the theatre to see ‘Lilies on the Land’, a play about four women who join the Women's Land Army – determined to work endless backbreaking hours on farms across the country to do their bit for the war effort.
When the National Federation of WIs was formed in 1917, Lady Denman (pictured wearing her Land Army uniform) was elected the first National Chairman – a role she held until 1946. At the outbreak of the Second World War, she became the Director of the Women's Land Army. For which work she was awarded the Grand Cross of the British Empire in 1951. It was great to see such enthusiasm for another local WI and we’ll be offering our support by following up last month’s meeting, so watch this space..... Letters to the Editor. Email: bbh.mag@gmail.com On the front page of last month’s edition we pictured the new traffic calming measures installed in the village. We asked you to tell us if you thought these would actually slow the traffic down. We received a large number of emails about it, so it seems that many villagers feel very strongly. Some are in favour; others think it's a waste of money. Here’s a selection of some of your comments…. TH says: “….. regarding the new ‘calming’ measures being installed near One-Stop, why on earth make the pavement as wide as it is?! How are buses and cars heading in the opposite direction going to pass each other now? If they wished to slow the traffic a proper roundabout (at Shelley Drive) would have been more suitable, not a painted spot! All they have done is made it harder to manoeuvre out of Shelley drive”. ============ AS says: “The new mini roundabout and cycle lane (Shelley Drive) is a ridiculous creation. It will not reduce traffic flow and it's layout and signage is causing all sorts of confusion”. ============= DW says: “The 20mph speed limit is a waste of time and money. No-one respects or abides by it and we know it will not be policed”. ============= DS says: “The layout (at Shelley Drive) still means that you can simply drive straight over (the roundabout) as we all did before. All it is, is a white circle in the tarmac”. ======== MH says: “..the road works outside the village shop ..will only make the junction even more dangerous as one will not be able to see around the corner when/if there are cars parked there. Now there is less parking available …..It will mean the death of the shop / P.O and we will lose it”. ========= LM says: “If people cannot be relied upon to respect these 20mph signs, they should be physically made to slow down and speed humps and restricted 'give way' calming installed such as in Southwater and Roffey”. But other villagers are more in favour of the new traffic calming measures. Some told us that they had noticed that traffic is much slower through the village. And others say they will “wait and see” how it works after all the roadworks are finished. For instance, PD says: “It is a bit early to know if the work will have any affect on the amount of traffic passing through the village, or the speed of the traffic. The real test will come once the changes in the village are complete and the changes to the old BBH by-pass are complete (the single carriageway section). This is meant to encourage vehicles to use the new by-pass, but it may also encourage more vehicles to try cutting through the village. ….. we shall need to monitor once both pieces of work are complete”. 6
The traffic calming scheme is the responsibility of West Sussex County Council so comments and complaints can be addressed to them. We asked Broadbridge Heath Parish Council what they thought of the traffic calming scheme. They have sent us this statement: “Until all the measures are in place and the bypass downgraded, it is not possible to
say if the traffic calming has been effective although it has already been commented that generally traffic going through the village seems to have slowed down. Traffic calming was discussed at the Parish Council meetings in February and March and councillors identified issues and concerns with some of the work that has already been completed. These have been passed onto West Sussex County Council (who is responsible for the scheme) and our County Councillor, Christian Mitchell.”

Parish Point Of View Brian New, Assistant Priest, St John’s Church, Broadbridge Heath, Church Road, RH12 3LD 01403 274114 info@stjohnsbbh.org.uk www.stjohnsbbh.org.uk Children, families and people of all ages are welcome. One of my favourite groups was the Eurythmics – which I guess dates me a bit – and one of their best songs includes the line “Peace is just a word.” Which made me think – what do we mean when we say things like “just give me a little peace” or “why can’t we have more peace here?” In general, what we’re asking for is that whatever is breaking our peace would be taken away – whether it’s noise, conflict, worry or the general pace of life. For many people peace means an absence – just take away whatever it is and leave me in a space where it is quiet and then everything will be OK. For Christians, peace is not an absence but it is a presence. It is the presence of God living within us. It is the knowledge that we are loved by him without question, accepted without question and that, come what may, nothing can change that. Because that is what Easter is all about – Jesus making all this possible through his dying and rising again to life. True peace comes from being able to trust that this is true. So, “peace” is not just a word – it is the reality which we have through Jesus. And all you have to do is ask. If you would like to know more, just come and see us at St John’s.
Praying for Our Local Streets. During 2018 at St John’s Church, we are praying every month for a set of roads in the village. BBH Mag Sport
News from local sports clubs.
If you would like to publish your sports news in this magazine please contact the Editor by email: bbh.mag@gmail.com FOOTBALL Broadbridge Heath Football Club Why does it always seem to rain on weekends and on the rare occasion when it's not raining it snows, as a result the clubs fixtures have been decimated, just two first team games have been played in the past month a midweek 4-1 win over Littlehampton Town followed a few days later by a disappointing 0-2 defeat at home to East Preston. The Reserve team did manage to get one game played but lost 2-0 at Mile Oak, that was only their 3rd match in 15 weeks and they've only played one home game since the 28th October and now have a major fixture backlog to contend with. The Under 18s are in a similar position having not played a home game since the 3rd December and time for all teams is fast running out with all matches having to be complete by the end of April. It's a similar story for the juniors but the Under 13s did manage to get their league cup semi-final played on the 3G at Lewis FC but despite a valiant effort from the boys they lost narrowly to probably the best Under 13 team in the county, Hove Park Colts. Despite the dreadful weather Sunninghill the developers constructing the new pavilion seem to be making good progress. The steel roof is in place and masonry work on the external and internal walls is coming along nicely. District Council Officers are doing an excellent job keeping us updated on a regular basis and we're still hoping for a completion date of early August, that will allow us to complete some internal work ourselves and hopefully be ready to start using the new ground from September onward. The clubs aim is to make as much use of the pavilion during the day for the local community, so if any groups would like to use the facility during week-days then please give us a call. Alternatively if you're looking for a venue to host a special birthday, anniversary or any other occasion then please do get in touch. You have probably noticed that work is well underway to build the new £12.3 million sports and leisure centre in Broadbridge Heath. Horsham district council approved plans in October 2016 to build a new state-of-theart complex next to the current centre. It will have a 6 court sports hall, gym, studios, changing facilities, clip and climb area, sensory room and a café. About half of the previous centre’s indoor running track (known as The Tube) is to be retained. Construction began in July 2017 and the council say works are progressing well. The structural steel frame has been completed and work on the external cladding to the roof is underway. Underfloor heating has been installed in the main foyer sales area and cafe and internal decoration was begun last month. The new multi-use games areas where completed in January and have been opened. However they will be closed to complete the drainage works, install new netting and finish off the floodlights. 11

Toasties Youth Club is looking for 4 more volunteers Due to the large number of young people attending each week, we have increased the number of volunteers for each session which is why we're desperate for more volunteers. Our team meet at 6pm on Fridays to set up, ready to open our doors to our young people at 6.30pm, during the evenings our volunteers supervise ensuring that there's no bullying, play board games, do Arts & Crafts, chat to our young people or play group games. The choice is yours throughout the session. Once the young people leave at 8pm, our volunteers clear away and then evaluate the sessions for any issues that have occurred during the session, also see if any improvement can be made for next time. We finish at 8.30pm. Toasties Youth Club is open term time only and is for Y6 to Y8 (10yrs to 13yrs). An application form and DBS check needs to be completed, followed by a meeting with our Community Youth Work Team Leader to complete the process. We operate a rota for volunteering at Toasties which is completed before each term. This is emailed around to everyone and then I do my utmost to give everyone the dates they prefer. Friends of Shelley School (FOSS): the school's Parent Teacher Association. Thank you to all the parents who supported our recent Shelley School Discos; an amazing sum of £645 was raised, every single penny of which will benefit the school, and a good, if very noisy and active time was had by all!. Our current pushes include a) raffle prizes and sponsorship for our Summer Fete (Friday, 6th July; PLEASE contact us if you can help!), and b) encouraging available and potentially very profitable methods of support from those who wish to help, through both Payroll Giving, and Match Funding. Payroll Giving requires just two minutes of your time speaking to employers (and has tax benefits too!), Match Funding requires those who volunteer for FOSS at any time to check if their employer offers it, and if so, to apply. Currently very underutilised free money for our lovely local school! If you wish to know more about anything we do, including the ways you can help, please drop us a line at fosspta17@gmail.com. We also accept straightforward donations; our children deserve everything we can do to counteract the shameful lack of education funding in West Sussex. Contact: Email fosspta17@gmail.com 13
2nd Broadbridge Heath Guides At the beginning of March we took three teams of guides to take part in Monopoly Run Live in London. We left the snowy landscape in Broadbridge Heath very early on Saturday morning to travel to London for the start at Waterloo Station. The aim was to visit as many of the sites on the Monopoly Board as possible and completing challenges like having our photo taken with a police officer whilst competing against the other seven teams in our game. There were 33 games competing all at the same time. If we were the first team in our game to reach a property we could buy it via the app or if we were not the first we paid rent. It was very exciting to buy our first property! We used public transport to get around London as quickly as possible and try to find all the properties by 5pm. We are already looking forward to attending again next year.
To join Girlguiding please visit girlguiding.org.uk or contact: Sharon Newman District Commissioner ggclemsfold@gmail.com First Broadbridge Heath Beavers, Cubs and Scouts have had another busy month, celebrating those young members who have achieved their awards at the District Scout Awards on 25 February. At the awards, Beavers received their Bronze Awards, Cubs received their Silver Awards and Scouts received their Gold Awards. Each set of awards represents a set of achievements for each age group. To gain an award, each individual must complete a set of challenge awards during their time at Beavers, Cubs or Scouts. These include skills challenges, creative challenges, adventure challenges and teamwork challenges appropriate for each age group. Of course our wonderful young people couldn't achieve their awards without the varied and engaging curriculum provided by the group leaders, who arrange activities that support their members in working towards various badges and awards. The Cubs and Scouts also enjoyed a joint evening at the Colgate camp grounds earlier this month, joining in with games, challenges and the all-important camp fire. If you could spare the time to support this valuable local group, please contact Chairman, Paula Flack by emailing cub1bbh@horshamscouts.com 14

The Financial Fairy Godmother of Broadbridge Heath
Pension contributions You might be wondering whether you should top up your pension before the end of this tax year. Here are some of the benefits. While interest rates on savings are still very low, the tax relief a Pension can attract adds to its growth. Example If you earn £55,000 and want to add £10,000 to your pension fund, you would only need to pay £8,000 yourself, with the other £2,000 being added in the form of tax relief. (This example assumes you are making no other pension contributions.) You could then claim a further £2,000 tax relief via your tax assessment, meaning it costs you only £6,000 to put £10,000 into your Pension. Pensions can be valuable for inheritance tax planning, and are also attractive to businesses, as they can claim tax relief on employer pension contributions. However, there are restrictions on how much you can pay in each year as well as the total you can accumulate over the lifetime of a pension. There are penalties if you exceed these limits so, as always, it's wise to seek professional advice. For a free initial consultation, please call me on 01403 288078. Karen MacDonald. Monetary Solutions Ltd A Pension is a long term investment. The fund value may fluctuate and can go down which would have an impact on the level of pension benefits available. Levels, bases and relief from taxation may be subject to change and the value depends on the individual circumstances of the investor.
