2nd Broadbridge Heath Guides
At the beginning of March we took part in the Monopoly Run. We took 2 teams to take part. We travelled all over London using different types of transport; train, bus, underground and our feet trying to find the properties on the Monopoly Board. We were lucky to virtually buy 4 properties each. Along the way there were random challenges for us to earn extra money. These included taking a photo with a street performer and a human pyramid. Over all our teams came 116th and 278th out of 479 teams. Article by Saffron, Dionne and Isabella.

BBH Mag Sport
News from local sports clubs.
If you would like to publish your sports news in this magazine please contact the Editor by email: bbh.mag@gmail.com FOOTBALL Broadbridge Heath Football Club The season is now coming to a close with just a few more weeks to go, the first team are currently on track to finish in their highest ever position which will be some achievement, the U23 team are also hoping for a top three finish in this their first season playing at this level but the Ressies, who now play in the West Sussex League are hoping to retain their place in the Championship North after a bad start to their campaign, the Under 18 team should look at this season as a learning curve, in July they will all be back, a year older, wiser and much stronger and we look forward to the team challenging at the other end of the division next season. No league or cup finals to look forward to this year from the junior section although the Under 14 Sunday side will be representing the Mid-Sussex Youth League in a national Futsal tournament held in Birmingham on the 31st March and we all wish them the best of luck. The Juniors are looking for players for next season’s U7s, U11s and U12s and parent coaches/helpers in those respective age groups. They also require a coach for their new U15 side playing Sundays mornings, if this is you then please do get in contact. They are also after sponsors for new kit and training equipment, with sponsors name on shirts, on the website and other social media. If you have a business or know someone who might be able to help then please get in contact. There's still no news on when our new facilities will be ready for transfer and the situation is now becoming serious for the club because with the old Leisure Centre having now been demolished the ground no longer meets the minimum standard required to allow our senior sides to play and if the situation is not resolved within a matter of weeks that could be the end of the road. I think we could all hear a lot more about this over the new few weeks if action is taken very soon. Our final home matches should prove to be quite exciting with two local derbies, so make sure you don't miss them. Just a reminder that entrance is free for all Broadbridge Heath players and coaches, seniors and juniors, to get entry you just need to wear a top with the clubs logo. Our final first team home fixtures of the season are: 6th April Eastbourne United K.O. 3.00 20th April Horsham YMCA K.O. 3.00 23rd April Loxwood K.O. 7.45 For more information on Broadbridge Heath FC please visit our website at www.bbh-fc.com 6
CRICKET
Broadbridge Heath Cricket Club Byfleets Lane Broadbridge Heath West Sussex RH12 3PB http://broadbridgeheath.play-cricket.com/home/home.asp
What a weather change since last month. There’s been enough rain for local football to be badly affected for at least two Saturdays and the bad news for cricket is that it encourages the moss to grow. Despite it looking like a nice green carpet in your back lawn it is no good for cricket squares. So we need to do some serious remedial work over the coming weeks if we are going to have sufficient grass to start playing cricket at home on the 27th April. The groundstaff team are making their plans to get the machinery started after a winter in store but unfortunately the team are going to be smaller this season because of illness so, if there are any readers, young or old, who can perhaps give a couple of hours one evening a week you will be very welcome. We can offer fresh air, boys’ toys and good company! Meanwhile, indoors, the Crawley League is coming to an end and our team’s performance has wobbled in the new year, Two defeats from three matches has not been our usual standard but there have still been some great individual performances with Dany Xavier again staring with the bat and again Shaji Philip with the ball. These two have had a great season so I hope they have not peaked too early. Doni James also scored 65 not out against Three Bridges but we lost on the penultimate ball, again punching above our weight against a County Premiership club. By the time you read this, our indoor nets at the fabulous County Ground will be over so look-out for cricket practice on the Top Common as you drive passed on a Thursday evening when taking that short-cut through Warnham in the car. Parish Point of View John Bailey, Lay Reader St John’s Church, Broadbridge Heath, Church Road, RH12 3LD office@stjohnsbbh.org.uk www.stjohnsbbh.org.uk Children, families and people of all ages are welcome. If there’s one thing about Christianity that’s obvious to most people inside or outside church, it’s all the divisions. On pretty well anything, from theology to ethics to the basic question of what it means to call oneself Christian, we can hear Christians themselves offering different answers. How are we supposed to know what Christianity really stands for? But there are three ideas that I believe everyone who grasps the heart of the Christian message actually does agree on; three benchmarks for people’s words and actions: God is self-giving Love in its purest form, and requires those who dare to speak in his name to show something of that same love and concern for others. That self-giving love, charity in the original and deepest sense of the word, is the true hallmark of a person’s Faith—not just for Christians or even people of faith generally, but for anyone who has grappled honestly with life’s deepest questions. Christians believe that in the person of Jesus, God himself shared the universal human experience of suffering and death—not just by accident or as an empty gesture, but to reconnect us with God and one another. The implication is startling: that everyone, regardless of what they’ve done with their lives, has the hope of forgiveness and a second chance because of what Jesus has done. Christians understand (even if they quibble over the details) that Jesus tamed death, leaving it no more than the point of departure for a freer and brighter existence. And most would say that the promise of a more hopeful existence here and now, in a renewed relationship with God and one another, is every bit as important as life in the hereafter. Three defining truths, three benchmarks for Christian spirituality. Do someone’s words and actions show reverence for God and other people? Are they willing to forgive and offer second chances? Do they inspire hope and generosity in others? These are impossibly high ideals that even the best of us never quite live up to, but they neatly encapsulate the teaching and example of Jesus. ——————————— Praying for Our Local Streets. At St John’s Church, we are praying every month for a set of roads in the village. If you would like something prayed for, email us: office@stjohnsbbh.org.uk This month we are praying for: Newbridge Close, Shelley Drive, Ellis Road, Thompson Road, Schollars Walk. 9
In 1954 the WI launched their "Keep Britain Tidy" campaign. This photo of WI members clearing litter was taken at that time. What a shame that 65 years later so many people still don't seem to have got the message.
These days we all realise it’s not just about how awful it looks but about the dreadful damage it’s doing, especially to our wildlife.
TV naturalist and ‘Keep Britain tidy’ Ambassador, Chris Packham, says “We now know litter is killing millions of small mammals. It's time for
everyone to take responsibility for their rubbish.” Just look at what happened to this hedgehog because of thoughtless dumping of these six pack rings! You can help to Keep Britain Tidy and save animals by joining the Great British Spring Clean between the 22 March and 23 April. To find out how, go to: www.horsham.gov.uk/bins/great-british-spring-clean-2019 Time to Celebrate Our WI is even older than the 65 year old campaign. Having begun in 1949, Broadbridge Heath WI is celebrating its 70th anniversary this year!
BROADBRIDGE HEATH WI
May Belton Trophy
We have a very special party planned for September when the Broadbridge Bombshells and other local WIs will join us to celebrate - with plenty of cake! It’s going to be lots of fun and I’ll tell you more about what we’ll be doing later but right now, I’d like your help. To commemorate our 50th Anniversary, twenty years ago, a beautiful trophy was donated to our WI with this engraved plate. We know, from information in our scrapbooks, that May Belton was a very active member of our WI but sadly, we don’t have any other information about her. Can you help? If you knew May or her family and can tell us about her, we’d love to hear from you so that her contribution to our WI can be recognised. Please get in touch with me, Jacqui King, on 01403 754718 or BBHWI@uwclub.net If you’d like to know more about our WI, our contact details are on the back cover. 10
The Bombshells Try Belly Dancing… Did you know that there are many different styles of belly dancing? Did you also know that the art of belly dancing arose from the ancient rituals and folk dances of Middle Eastern cultures? It is thought to have originated from Ancient Egypt, but also occurred in Greece, Persia, Hungary and Spain. There are many varied theories as to why people began to belly dance, examples range from blessing and healing people, to mimicking the harvesting and sowing of crops, preparation for childbirth, preparation of the wedding ceremony, to secular entertainment. It is also thought that it may have evolved from the worship of the great mother goddess and developed from the combination of fertility cults, religious rituals, as well as magic and secular dances. The movement in traditional belly dancing is similar to the movement characteristics of a snake. It is based on a firm connection with the ground, and the dancers then begin to layer on the movement of the hips and pelvis, spinning around, moving the upper torso, rib cage, and arms. In an experienced dancer the rib cage can remain still, the abdomen can undulate, the pelvis can tilt, and the hips can take a shimmy type shape. However, this was not generally the case when we all had a go! Muscles that hadn’t been used in a long time were suddenly pulled into action, their protests continued into the next day! What a sight we must have been, thank goodness someone closed the hall blinds to protect the general public from our uncoordinated undulations. I wasn't expecting as many Bombshells to shake off their shoes and socks to join in, but most of us braved showing our hooves (after being hidden away during a long winter) with relatively little embarrassment, or wine consumed. It was very amusing and entertaining, and definitely something that I personally would like to do again. Great for fitness, great for toning, and so much more fun than a session in the gym, what’s not to love? If you fancy giving it a go you can attend Carina’s class in Horsham on a Wednesday evening at Glynde Place Dance Studio. I personally guarantee that you won’t be disappointed. Carina even does parties, so get the girls together for some fun, fitness and lots of giggles… Become a Bombshell! Don’t be shy, come along, meet us, make new friends and create new interests! Last Tuesday of the month, 8pm. Check out our website and Facebook page for details of meetings. Register to vote ahead of 2019 elections Horsham District Council is encouraging as many residents as possible to take part in the district Council elections on Thursday 2 May 2019. In order to vote in the elections residents must make sure that that they are registered to vote by Friday 12 April. Anyone already registered to vote will receive their poll card in early April. If you are not registered, you cannot vote and your credit rating may be affected. If anyone has recently moved to the District or has just turned 18, there is still time to get on to the electoral register in time for the election. Registering is quick and easy and can be done online at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote at any time. If you are unable to register online, a paper form can be requested by contacting the council’s Electoral Services team. Parish council elections will also take place on 2 May. These are the first elections to take place using new ward boundaries following a review last year. This means that some households are now in a different ward from previous years. We are also using new polling stations this year, and voters are encouraged to check their poll cards carefully or visit our visit our find your polling station webpage to make sure you know which polling station you can vote in. Electors who are unable to vote at the polling station can apply for a postal vote or appoint a proxy to vote on their behalf. The deadline for applying for a postal vote is 5pm on Monday 15 April. Postal votes will be sent out from Tuesday 16 April. The deadline for appointing a proxy is 5pm on Monday 24 April. Both forms are available on the Horsham District Council website or can be requested from Electoral Services. Major highway improvement work starts soon in Broadbridge Heath. West Sussex County Council say the project, costing about £2million, will provide new facilities for both pedestrians and cyclists, and manage through-traffic on (from theC622) the A264, A281 and A24, which currently uses the old bypass. It will also help reduce traffic through Broadbridge Heath village and includes:
•
Alterations to the Newbridge roundabout to restrict access into Broadbridge Heath village from the A281; 12
• • • • • •
Re-routing the Billingshurst Road along a new connector road to link it with a narrowed C622; New shared footways/cycleways and improved crossing facilities at Newbridge roundabout; A new off-road shared route linking Newbridge roundabout along the wide grass verge to the Tesco roundabout; A new off-road shared route linking Tesco roundabout to A24 Farthings Hill, which will convert lane one of the existing dual carriageway to a raised footway/ cycleway; Changes to lane markings on the dual carriageway link between the A24 Farthings Hill junction and the Tesco roundabout; Cycle and footway improvements to the A24 Farthings Hill roundabout, including the introduction of traffic signal 'toucan' crossings and raised south bridge parapet for a cycle route upgrade.
Preparations started in March ahead of the main construction phase. The main construction works are due to start in early April and last until the autumn. The contractor for the scheme is Jackson Civil Engineering. At the same time, there will continue to be construction works at the Abbey Developments housing site on the corner of the C622 Broadbridge Way and A281 Five Oaks Road and at Countryside Properties’ new Neighbourhood Centre. The C622 will be closed from early April so the highway works can go ahead and to prepare for the downgrading of the C622 Broadbridge Way at the Neighbourhood Centre. The closure will also include the section of Billingshurst Road between Shelley Drive and Newbridge Roundabout to control through traffic entering the village, although bus access will be maintained through the works. Details of the main closure, traffic management layouts (including any night-time closures) and works schedule will be made available through the West Sussex County Council website at: www.westsussex.gov.uk/broadbridgeheath The scheme is being funded through developer contributions from the West of Horsham housing area.

The Financial Fairy Godmother
of Broadbridge Heath
Can I have my cake and eat it? Equity Release allows you to access capital and keep your home. This may seem a good option, if you’ve exhausted interest-only mortgage deals, or wish to help with family weddings, house deposits or school fees. Funding home improvements or special holidays can be difficult on a fixed income, and it’s tempting to borrow on the house. However, Equity Release can be costly, with upfront fees for financial and legal advice, and it will reduce your equity in the house. This means that if the house is someone’s inheritance, they will receive less. The money raised could also affect tax or any means-tested benefits. Is there an alternative? Could you could raise the money elsewhere, from savings, through a standard mortgage or loan, by downsizing, or borrow from family? There are local authority grants for some home improvements.
Could you avoid borrowing? Budget strictly, or increase your income: can you still work, or take in a lodger? Check www.entitledto.co.uk for any benefits due to you. Not all benefits are means-tested. Equity Release may involve a lifetime mortgage or home reversion plan, which will involve either a loan secured on the main residence or the sale of all or part of a property. As a result, the value of your assets and/or estate may be reduced. It should not be entered into lightly and professional advice should be sought to understand the features and risks involved. Call Karen MacDonald for advice from a qualified independent financial adviser with Monetary Solutions Limited. (www.monetarysolutions.co.uk) For a free initial consultation about this or any other financial matter please call 01403 288078 or email karen@monetarysolutions.co.uk The information in this article is for information only and must not be considered as financial advice. We always recommend that you seek independent financial advice before making any financial decisions. The value of your investment can go down as well as up and you may get back less than you have put in.
