News from police in the village. COMMUNITY
PCSO Michael Gamble
There’s more to the community of Broadbridge Heath than just the location. People in this community have shared values such as democracy, rule of law, respect & tolerance and individual liberty. The feeling of membership, belonging to the community.
The community matters to people and because the community matters people want to conserve the community, protect it and preserve it the way it is. Recently, I’ve heard a number of members of the community say “BROADBRIDGE HEATH ISN’T WHAT IT USED TO BE” and they are right. The fact is the Broadbridge Heath and the community is changing and has changed a lot in the last 10 years. In the years between 2001 and 2011 the population of Broadbridge Heath rose from 3,021 residents to 3,112 residents, a rise of 91 residents. In the years between 2011 and 2020 the population rose from 3,112 residents to 6,187 residents, a rise of 3,075 residents. Broadbridge Heath has doubled in size in the last 10 years. Where there were fields before, there are now streets, houses, car parks, play parks and shops. There are more people walking the streets, more cars on the roads, more children in the play parks and more dogs being walked in the fields. When a community changes it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a bad thing. The community can change for the better and resident’s lives can be enhanced. This might be because there are better facilities available like more shops or a new sports centre. Or because there is a greater variety of people in the community with different outlooks and offering a broader perspective on life. If a community increases in size, you might expect a rise in reports of anti-social behaviour or crime to the police. However, the mindless anti-social behaviour that Broadbridge Heath have experienced in the last few months is something that is not accepted by the community. Activities such as the breaking of windows at the new Parish Council office, the smashing of the bus stop, egging houses, fighting are not the behaviours that are expected from residents of the Broadbridge Heath community and will not be tolerated.
If any undesirable activities are witnessed by members of the community they must be reported to the police so action can be taken to put a stop to the behaviour. If a crime is happening at the time call 999, for non-emergencies call 101 or report online. You are the community, strive on diligence, and don’t give up. 3

1st Broadbridge Heath Rainbows
This month the Rainbows celebrated World Thinking Day by completing activities from around the world. First, we played a participation story to learn why we celebrate World Thinking Day, next we sang the Kookaburra song from Australia before building the Eiffel Tower using jelly tots and cocktail sticks and finally girls learnt to write their name in hieroglyphics. We finished the evening with 4 girls making their promise as Rainbows.
2nd Broadbridge Heath Guides This month we celebrated World Thinking Day by spending an evening completing activities from around the world and why it is important for guides. We spent an evening planning the best route around London to complete the Monopoly Run Live. We had a fantastic day racing around London trying to reach all the properites on the Monopoly Board we even had enough time for a sneaky hot chocolate.
If you can spare an hour or two a week or are willing to help behind the scenes with admin etc. we would love to hear from you. For more information regarding volunteering please contact: Sarah Little Clemsfold District Commissioner ggclemsfold@gmail.com or visit girlguiding.org.uk 6
1st Broadbridge Heath Scout Group It’s been a busy few weeks in Scouting, with all three sections learning new Skills for Life – cooking and ironing for the Scouts and polishing shoes for the Beavers and Cubs. Our Scouts have also managed a night hike and a visit from a snake specialist. The Cubs and Beavers meanwhile made pancakes and enjoyed a science evening which included planting seeds for our vegetable trugs and launching indoor rockets. We are always on the look out for volunteers to join our friendly team on Committee or as Group Leaders – if you would be interested, even in a very small role, please contact our Group Scout Leader James (gsl1bbh@horshamscouts.com).

At our last meeting we were lucky enough to have gardening expert Jean Griffin here to answer all our questions. She handled everything from when and how to plant or move a plant, how to prune, the best way to propagate favourite plants and what to do about common problems like bugs and blight. She was also able to identify the odd plant/weed that that some of our members had brought along for her to look at. Jean showed us specimens of a few striking plants and she also brought some of the plethora of products aimed at gardeners and explained how they work to control pests or feed and care for both outdoor and indoor plants. We discussed damage to the environment and Jean explained why certain products are no longer available and what alternatives could be used. Best of all, she had plenty of money saving tips and environmentally friendly home remedies for dealing with pests, fungus and other gardening nightmares! You can hear Jean answering gardener’s questions every Sunday morning on BBC Radio Kent. Following the success (ahem) of our panto, next month some of us will be murdering performing another play, so there’s a bit of reading lines and sorting out costumes going on now as our ‘director’ finalises the casting. If you’d like to come and watch us being silly, you’ll be made very welcome. Just pop along to St John’s Hall at 2.30 on the second Tuesday in the month or for more information, contact: Broadbridge Heath WI Email: BBHWI@uwclub.net or phone Maureen on 01403 268963

Broadbridge Bombshells WI One of the great things about WI is the opportunities it gives you to learn about subjects that you may never stumble across in every day life. Here at Broadbridge Bombshells WI we are committed to the education of women and to bringing our members interesting and fun meetings which may just change their lives for the better. And our latest meeting was one that fits perfectly into that category…Jenny from Bodyfix Therapies came to tell us all about Chinese Medicine. What a fascinating and fun night! We learned about the wonders of acupuncture, cupping, herbs and Chinese massage. We tasted cinnamon tincture, smelled herbs, sniffed snuff, sampled essential oils, and some of us were very lucky to experience treatments such as ear acupuncture, cupping and the unusual Chinese medicine diagnosis which involves the patient poking out their tongue! So very different from western medicine and we all went away with lots to think about.
Our next meeting on Tuesday 26th April will be our much anticipated Chocolate Evening - where we will have the chance to showcase and sample our favourite chocolate dishes and drinks. There will be also be a chocolate themed raffle! We are always pleased to welcome new members to our friendly group, so if all this sounds like your idea of fun, then please check out our website and Facebook page or email our President Rowena for further information email: bbhwi1951@gmail.comwebsite: https://www.broadbridgebombshellswi.co.uk/

Broadbridge Heath Football Club With the season drawing to a close we can look back on what has been quite a successful year for the club. The first team are on target for a top 8 finish in the Southern Combination League Premier Division which is one of the best seasons we've ever had and seeing so many youth players step up to play senior football is something we're all very proud of. The Under 23s won their league and with just one game remaining they remain unbeaten, unfortunately though they lost their league cup quarterfinal in a penalty shoot-out to Hassocks, so no double this season. The Under 17s finished runners up in their division but are through to the Plate Final which will be played at Dorking Wanderers on the 14th May. At the time of writing the Under 16s are top of their division but still have games to play. The Under 15s won their division and ended unbeaten winning 13 games and drawing one. So with the season drawing to a close we can look forward to our Youth 5-a -side tournament which will take place over the May Bank Holiday weekend and then go straight into the close season where all three pitches will see a lot of refurbishment work going on. The Club are always looking for volunteers to help in some capacity, whether that's coaching/managing or just helping out around the club litter picking, mowing, cleaning dressing rooms, D.I.Y. or anything in between, then please do get in contact because we'd love to hear from you, Forthcoming Home First Team Fixtures Saturday 16th April, AFC Vardenians - Kick Off 3.00 Saturday 23rd April, AFC Uckfield - Kick Off 3.00

Rev. Dr. Mark Lavender, Vicar, St John’s Church, Broadbridge Heath.
Rev. Dr. Mark Lavender Easter Sunday, more than any other day in the Christian calendar, represents good news and hope for all of the world. It is a day where traditionally the church celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead – an event which, if proved to be true, is significant enough to change the way that every person on earth views their own life and death. It brings an extraordinary claim – that a man, alive around 2,000 years ago claimed to be God himself, willingly allowed himself to be tortured and then killed in the most brutal way, and then after his body had been sealed in a tomb for 3 days, he came back from the dead. Furthermore, Christians believe that because of his death and resurrection, which was in a sense a sacrificial death on our behalf (all people are destined to die because we have allowed ourselves to be fooled into thinking we can live without God), but because of his ability to overcome death and his dependence on God - it is possible for us too. For those who believe that Jesus was raised from the dead will also be given the gift of eternal life. And yet the extraordinary thing is that this event is extremely well documented. In terms of historical events, it is incomparable in having written evidence in favour of being a true event. Unlike much of Roman, Greek and other histories that we take for granted (such as the life of Julius Caesar) which have limited physical written records dating much later than the events they describe, there is manuscript evidence for the resurrection as early as AD 130 (only 100 years after Christ) and full manuscripts by AD 350 as well as 5,309 Greek manuscripts, 10,000 Latin and 9,300 others. The apostle Paul gives a list of people (in 1 Corinthians 15:3-8) to whom the risen Jesus appeared. These witnesses to the resurrected Jesus include Peter, James the brother of Jesus, and, most intriguingly, a group of more than 500 people at the same time. The claim of the Christian church – that anyone who believes that Jesus was God himself and was raised to life can receive eternal life – is treated as a myth by many or simply a hoax and yet, if it is true, it is the greatest gift to mankind – the opportunity to know our creator and lives with Him forever. The testimony of the church is that this is true and billions of people since that event have placed their faith in Jesus. The question this Easter is, will you? Why not join us this Easter Sunday at 10:30am and find out for yourself? 15

As April commences the spring bulbs around the village are in full bloom and our approved Grass Cutting Contractor will have commenced grasscutting for this season. Essential spring maintenance at Top Common is being carried out, and the Triangle wildflower seeding is now complete. Work has continued at the Parish Office on the internal set-up. Unfortunately, several windows have been mindlessly vandalized. These instances have been reported to the Police. The Clerks met recently with Broadbridge Heath’s PCSO Michael Gamble and the windows and anti-social behavior in the area were discussed. PSCO Gamble reiterated the importance of reporting crime and anti-social behaviour. This can be done online or via 101.
Bus gate and HGV restriction TRO WSCC Councillor Mitchell — extract from his March report The HGV restriction TRO notice and information plan was published in mid-January 2022. The HGV ban TRO has now completed consultation with no objections and will now move forward to making the order before sealing once the signs are installed. WSCC’s contractor is Landbuild who will work with WSCC’s electrical supplier and ANPR camera supplier for the bus gate. SSE need to install a new post and power for the camera. Landbuild do not have resources to do the work yet so there will be a slight delay in starting. The work timetable for the ANPR camera is the end of April / early May for the camera. Despite this short delay, matters are a lot closer than before. All the scheme’s works will be done together when Landbuild are on site, including the humps in the car park. 16

MEET YOUR COUNCILLORS Each month during 2022 we will be introducing one of our Parish Councillors. This month we hear from Councillor Kaz Smith who was co-opted onto the Council last month. I moved to Broadbridge Heath with my wife Lisa in 2014 to work for a Multi Academy Trust until I took semi-retirement in September 2020. When we moved into our new build in Ottley Way eight years ago, we began the process of getting to know our new surroundings. Having something in common with our neighbours helped us all to build a strong sense of community and we all supported each other to settle in. It was wonderful to find that the warm welcome extended beyond the road we lived in, with so many community activities, people and organisations working to improve the quality of life in Broadbridge Heath. I feel that this is a community that cares; it has a real sense of place, an identity, and a desire to hold onto that irrespective of how much the village grows. It’s that feeling of community that I have experienced that made me think about becoming a Parish Councillor. Now that I have retired, I’d like to give something back to the community and will do my best to represent the residents. I’m looking forward to learning more about the village, to have the opportunity to meet more of the people who live here and to help in any way I can with the many projects that the Parish Council are working on.

The Financial Fairy Godmother of Broadbridge Heath Lifetime Allowance I’ve written about the Pension Lifetime Allowance before, but as it's something that comes up a lot in advice at this time of the year, I thought it might be good to refresh readers' memories. The Lifetime Allowance was introduced on 6th April 2006, at £1,500,000. Over the first few years this increased and peaked at £1,800,000, then decreased to £1,000,000 by 2016/2017. Since then there have been a few increases, but it has now been fixed at £1,073,100 until 2025/26. At first I remember thinking, as an adviser, that it was unlikely to affect many, but with these reductions more and more people are affected. The Lifetime Allowance is the maximum you can build up within pensions while still enjoying full tax benefits. Pension benefits are tested against this allowance, usually when pension benefits are taken. Any value in excess of the Lifetime Allowance is subject to a tax charge. It is possible for individuals to have a higher Lifetime Allowance by having a form of Protection, which you can still apply for. Are you near or over the current Lifetime Allowance? If you are, get advice. Paying tax is not always a bad thing but there may be things you can do to help your position. Don’t stop paying into a pension just because you are near to this Allowance, as there can be other benefits to keeping the pension, for example if your employer pays into it. Karen MacDonald is an independent financial adviser with Monetary Solutions (www.monsols.co.uk).
